  1. I saw that UO was ranked at 111, but I didn’t notice that Wazzu was there as well. These rankings are absolute crap, but I understand that the lazy need to find their future college destinations in a magazine.

I can’t express enough disgust with this rag’s ‘rankings’. A look at the top ten every year tells us how flawed their methodology really is. If the schools at the top weren’t in such flux every year I might take a second look.

Note: USC tied with Cal just ahead of UCLA. ‘Nuff said.

    • I’d rank those: Cal, UCLA, USC

They are crap, but they’re also important since guys like Weasel, Sark, and Kelly employ negative recruiting tactics (i.e. used the tier 3 ranking against the university).

      • The rankings should have these Cali schools represented…
Top 10: Cal, Cal Tech and Stanford
        Low teens: UC San Diego
        Low twenties: UC Davis
About 50: A very much improved USC which was somewhere around 110 a decade ago.

    • Check that… USC is right behind Cal and tied with *cough* Carnegie Mellon… just ahead of UCLA.

Amazingly, USNews remembered that UC’s San Diego and Davis exist. They put them at 35 and 39, which is just a slap in the face of anything remotely resembling a valid ranking of US universities.

I don’t know why I read this thing every year. It just gets me steamed every time.

      • I don’t think #139 and first tier are necessarily unfair ratings on their own, but 9th in the Pac-10…that’s the flaw. Have to bump the Beavs up to #111 if you’re putting Oregon and WSU there.

        • Just for a general reference, I would say a consensus of rankings (sans USNews) pans out a little like this:
          Cal/Stanford – about #5
          UCLA – about #20
          UW – about #25
          UA – about #55
          USC – about #75
          ASU/OSU – about #90
          UO/WSU – about 200-220

          CU – about #40
          Utah – about #90

          Just for fun:
          UT – about #40
          aTm – about #80
          TTech – about #180
          OU/OSU – 300+

  2. Definitely have to put us above UO, especially when you look at our sciences. You can pick a bone about our universities liberal arts (which are largely ignored on the high administrative levels, they push science) but our sciences are amazing. I.E. OSU is helping in a massive way in the recovery of the gulf by introducing bacteria that metabolize the oil in the water while simultaneously serving as a valuable food source for the oceans food web, ultimately leading to a potential mass recovery of the fish population.

    • Preaching to the choir, my friend. My degree is ecology and my minor wildlife biology.

I’m curious to see if this curbs negative recruiting. When the PAC-16 merger was all the rage, many sites pointed out that OSU was the only 3rd tier school in the conference. Point being: people pay attention, and it’s embarrassing when they do. Even if we know it’s wrong, they don’t.

Again, the only reason this matters is recruiting and perception. Both, sadly but understandably, are important.
