Not much to criticize at this point. A few topics to stir conversation:

  • How far do you think the lady beavs will go in the Tourney?
  • Is the baseball team legit, the competition weak, or a combination? Is Jake Thompson for real (no) or is this another head fake (yes).
  • What are you looking for in the spring game? I’m looking for improve WR play, would like to hear the OL looks serviceable, and of course which QB performs best.
  • Any word on this new AD and what, if anything, he’s doing? For those of you on campus, is it a smooth transition?
  • Etc, anything you wish.

Go Beavs.

  1. Wooohooo first comment umm so lady beavs should make final 4. The baseball team is very good I honestly think they can make it to the end this year. I’m looking for improved overall passing play consistent quarterbacks, and great secondary play and good blocking. Seems to be a smooth transition most people really respect him.

      • I’ll say sweet 16 also, as gopher pointed out though, this team has been one poor shooting game by Syd away from defeat all year. Be nice to see Marie and Kolbie take just a bit of the attention off of Her.
Wonder if Rueck is more likely than before to leave Pivec in even with two fouls early, she and the returning McWilliams could also lighten the load for Syd.
Anything could happen in a “one and done” scenario.

  2. I think the Lady Beavs got a favorable road to the final 4. Still hard to make it, but I don’t see any games where we should not be favored.

  3. The Sweet 16 seems a given, but getting to the final 4 looks like steeper climb than last year.

I can attest that there is a strong outreach to donors going on; finishing the Valley Center and the Goss expansion are the top priorities. A more assertive “ask” than heretofore, which is probably Barnes’s doing.

Rescheduling the Colorado State game was a mistake in my view. The kind of thing DeCarolis would have done. Yes, it might be more visible on TV, and the team can lengthen the practice season by a week, and the extra bye is good too, but the ultimate goals is wins and now they will be starting out against higher caliber competition in the first game, and in a sold-out new stadium besides, and probably thereby doubled the degree of difficulty of coming out of Fort Collins with a W.

      • Last year they were a mediocre MWC team. If we really see ourselves as a mediocre Pac-12 team, we shouldn’t be worried about them.

        • My Gophers played them last year. The kid listed as the starter at QB last year had actually been beaten out and replaced with a freshman who looked pretty good against the Golden Rodents. I believe the freshman got hurt later in the year. First year coach last year. The Rams were not as good as the previous year, when they had a formidable team. They will be be a legitimate challenge out of the gate.

        • We SHOULD beat them, but you never know in a game 1.
Senior QB. Team opening their brand new stadium on national tv. High altitude. All stuff we should expect our team to be able to overcome, but game 1 seems to always be a crap shoot.

          • I agree OSU should beat them but this is one of those trap games against a decent mid major opponent. As for the altitude most of the team and coaching staff should be aware as they played in Boulder last season (and poorly, worst performance of the season). Maybe leave a day early to get acclimated? Might be a good question for someone to ask GA on a call in radio show.

          • Since school wouldn’t be starting that week, is it possible for the Beavs to fly to CSU a week early to start practicing that Monday at a local university or high school or something to get acclimated to the altitude since it was clearly an issue last year?

    • I agree….I hope the Beavs don’t come out in typical fashion by coming out slow in early season Non-Conference road games. This could be a potential nightmare.
Looks very similar to how the Beavs played common opponents — the Rams played Colorado (44-7 loss), Boise State (28-24 loss), and Minnesota (31-24 loss).
Hope our guys don’t get too overwhelmed by the media attention of it being the first game, and new stadium.

    • OSU should win that game. I think the D will win it for us. We have a strong rotation now and will need it at elevation. Think we’ll sack their QB a lot and win it that way.

  4. I wonder if Dustin Stanton will be drafted? Was he ever honorable mention pac12? Wonder if his training camp in Bend is being paid for? Is Gavin Andrews training some where?

  5. FOOTBALL: Is Villamin being diplomatic or brutally honest when he says about last years receiving corps, “We weren’t paying attention to the coverages. And then when that happened, the quarterback didn’t know where to throw it, so then the balls weren’t getting completed.
“It’s mostly our fault (over) the quarterbacks, so I put the blame on me.”

He also says of working with Jason Phillips, ” the volume or types of concepts have not changed for the receivers, but that there is “more emphasis on making sure the details are right.”

    • I don’t think he’s being diplomatic, IMO a lot of it was on the receivers. You go back to the transition they went through: Riley ran an extremely pass heavy offense, so they were used to getting the ball. Major 180 when GA takes over. Select a running QB who can’t pass, and when he does connect you get decapitated. Midway through the year we almost completely abandoned the pass and they go from the stars of the team to running ghost routes.

Year 2: Garretson is the starting qb and he can’t hit the broad side of a barn. Again, receivers are just running ghost routes. I could tell from body language everyone but Bolden kind of disengaged for a few games. Then once Marcus started completing passes it almost looked like the receivers needed the rust knocked off like they were just going into fall practice.

      • Yeah….some of these dropped passes attributed to being surprised by the ball — that shouldn’t happen. Receivers need to be expecting the every down no matter the offense style.

    • Wide reciever youth movement Effect…Exhibit A

Why was he on the field if he couldn’t figure out the coverages? Stuff like this sounds like he is taking responsibility but I think it sounds more like he threw away his Junior year pouting or goofing off. What a waste.
His focus/ability was questioned throughout lastseason. He is facing the reality of more talent/competition around him, and draft hopes for next year so now he acts like he is going to be the man. Not buying it, but hopefully he becomes a leader of good things rather than taking plays off or whatever he was doing last year.

      • Yeah, I thought it was actually a very odd explanation from Villamin and self-incriminating. I think he either has a big season or ends up riding the bench and it I was betting I would choose the latter.

        • I wouldn’t put it past him to have a big year. Athletically he’s kind of a freak when considering unique blend of size, speed and jumping ability. Also has great hands, and is very hard to bring down for a receiver once he has the ball.

Someone here who’s a current student said Villy had some big off the field problems going on during last season: vague recollection is a law suit with a slimy landlord? So his head wasn’t all in.

Villamin seems like a good kid. I’m rooting for him

    • Yeah they looked like absolute ass. Shot 17% from the field in the first half and trailed by as many as 25 at home to Cal-Bakersfield before losing 73-66. Utah also lost at home to Boise St. Another bad year for the Pac in postseason tournaments coming?

    • Good find, Bill. Jake has been solid so far, looking forward to seeing him in conference.
Let’s hope he gets to showcase his talent this year in Omaha.

  6. Buffs lose at UCF, PAC goes 0-3 in the NIT. Trojans with the 2nd largest comeback in tournament history to beat Providence to advance

  7. VOTE FOR SCOTT: From the Werner Ladder Naismith C.O.Y. folks:

This year, fans have a say in the overall voting process. Between March 20-31 fans can visit http://www.naismithtrophy.com/vote to cast their ballot for one of these four Naismith Award finalists. Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. EDT on March 31 and fans are limited to one vote per day. The fan vote will account for 5% of the total vote

Well, OK, fans votes only count for 5% but, why not vote? Help see that the guy from UCONN doesn’t get it for an EIGHTH time!

  8. BASEBALL: Is Casey already setting up the dawgs when he mentions them as one of the stronger teams in the conference? (note that the ucks weren’t included).
“Our league is better this year,” OSU coach Pat Casey said. “We’ve got three teams in the top 12. Then you start talking about teams like Arizona State, teams like UCLA, teams like Washington that were preseason-ranked. And Utah, we saw them play down in (Arizona), so I know we’ve got a lot of strength throughout the league.”
Good to also read some “one at a time” talk from the players in the piece from the GT.

  9. “It was a continuation of a trend that hounded Romar’s tenure at Washington. He was able to recruit star players, but was never able to fully capitalize on the talent he amassed.”

    http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/18916641/washington-huskies-fire-lorenzo-romar-9-22-season

Ya think?!?!? It’s something some of us have KNOWN for years. Great recruiter, terrible X’s and O’s guy. Yet it took UW 15 years to figure this out.

I’m hearing Dan Majerle and Cameron Dollar as names being thrown out there. I can’t see either of those moving the meter on Mutt Lake. But, much like Chris Petersen is this the job that entices Mark Few to make the move to P5?

Sorry douche trolls but OSU isn’t the destination that was going to move his meter.

      • Roger that. However Few has yet to get Gonzaga to a final four. If he can’t do it this year when will he? Football may be a different animal but it’s really difficult to draw in the talent to get a mid major to make that deep run in hoops. From time to time you see the Butler’s, VCU’s and Wichitard State’s in there but the blue bloods always seem to attract the talent to make it happen. The question is will his competitiveness drive him to achieve something he has yet to accomplish? Or is he truly content in Spokane and not getting enough talent to make it happen? Everything I’ve read says the latter. But, imso if there is one job that could potentially make him think about making it happen it’s the one in Seattle.

FYI, your Gophers are going down. Whiskey’s upset LOCK for the first round. Another imso

        • Few would never leave Gonzaga. Schools are less regarded as stepping stones in basketball vs football. Resource difference isn’t as great as football.

UW will go after an established coach vs an up and comer. This doesn’t mean the coach will come from a big school, but one that has been coaching for a while.

They definitely lose Porter jr who is going to be a monster at whatever school he lands at.

        • F you buddy LOL. You may be right. Starting guard and the lone senior blew out his achilles in the victory in the B1G tournament against Sparty. Big loss for them as they don’t have a real fourth guard. I’m hoping that the much tougher schedule pulls them through. This has been a mentally tough team. If our center does not foul out, we have a shot. In any regard, this has been an awesome season. Last year 8-23, the worst season in the history of the program. Pitino would have been fired if not for a high buyout. Finished fourth in the B1G and another excellent recruiting class is coming in to join a young team.

  10. Today the Pac-12 asked me if I’d be interested in putting up a video player on the site and gaining some revenue in return. Anyone have issue with that?

I’m not sure what numbers we’re talking. If low I won’t do it. If the video player is huge I won’t do it. And if we can’t talk shit about the Pac-12 I won’t do it.

Angry@angry is going to be so angry(!) that another legit source has approached me. Poor li’l guy. Still believes I wanted a media pass when I just wanted free tickets to games here in CA. Lolol.

    • I’m assuming it would be one of those video embeds at the top right. They show with ab. If it’s a manual embed, I’m more likely to open it and watch if it’s content which interests me. If it’s auto, then it screws with any sound I have going on a background tab, and I get annoyed with it.

There’s an opportunity on this site to allow a manual link to scroll without it affecting page load or scrolling capabilities.

But the most annoying of all of them are the embeds that are auto and scroll, so you have to manually turn it off instead of on. I’ve stopped going to sites that started employing those.

    • I’d probably ask you guys to disable it for this site in exchange for free content yet where I can get some revenue. Keep it enabled elsewhere. We have no ads here so it’s not necessary here anyway. I’m not sure if I will do it. It’s through a 3rd party who sources Pac content, and I’m not sure their agenda, etc. I’m talking with the guy so we’ll see. He said it could go in the lower right corner and be 400px wide. The sound would be muted by default. Maybe what I will do is test it once WBB slows down. If it sucks I can ditch it. I think it might be the auto/scroll type. Maybe I can negotiate that out.

      • It can scroll as long as it’s not auto. Auto screws with the page load, and if I have radio going on another page it screws with that. If I can see it but only listen/watch when I have the time for it (shut off all other sounds… or just give me time to actually go turn sound on then stand/sit still long enough to watch something), the more I’m likely to use it… and actually pay attention to it.

Bottom right would be less disruptive than top right on the laptop. But how would it work for mobile screens?
