General Thread/Midweek Game

82

Feel free to use this for whatever, including the midweek game vs Gonzaga.

On a side note, I got rid of the video player. After the two week trial where I got to work with the company first hand, I didn’t like their business practices. Goodbye. In the future I will be open to similar ideas if they make sense. I’m also open to working with local companies in Corvallis/Portland that I respect, etc. Just email me if you ever want to work together in some capacity. I don’t have anything in mind, but I’m always open to ideas (and like Scotty, I like long walks on the beach and beautiful sunsets).

  1. I would have really liked the video player had it not primarily been devoted to teams rocketing bombs over the outfield fence against our softball team!

    • Tweedt will start. Probably Britton, Gambrell, Hickey and Englebreckt in the pen.

Pitchers who have not made an appearance this year,
Church – He had decent numbers last year so not sure why he’s on the outs.
Donovan – Eggers said he was in contention for the #3 starter in the fall so what happened?
Martinek – Is he still injured?
Rasmussen – I think he’ll be back in May. Predicting he’ll make his first appearance in the 5/16 game vs Portland.

      • Yeah, Tweedt is the obvious choice to start. I’ll be surprised if Casey tries anyone else this week, maybe down the line but, not this week.

Even though Parker was bloviating about how much Englebreckt threw in the pen over the weekend, I think he could go an inning or two, however it would be nice to have him fresh for the leg humpers.

Hickey is the one to watch, the team could really use a righty out of the pen and he seems the most likely, long term.

How about the “Pitcher of the Week” award, this week Mulholland gets it; following all three regular starters. Yes, even Thompson and Fehmel have been named POW already this season!

As for the video player, most of the time I just x’d out the screen at the side and didn’t bother going down to the bottom one. With the sound off as default, I had no problem with it. Feelin’ lonely on this one.

  2. The previous thread on basketball woes has me thinking about the current status of Tinkle. We seem to be faced with the idea that either the 2015-2016 season (NCAA tourney w/ GPII) or the 2016-2017 season (one Pac-12 win) is the reality and the other was a function of either good or bad luck, depending on your perspective.

I’m increasingly coming to the conclusion that we’re going to be stuck in the bottom tier of the conference until Tinkle and staff create and commit to an identity of what they want the program to look like (no tartan floor designs, though …)

It feels like they’ve started each of the previous three seasons with a clean slate and constructed the offensive and defensive philosophies based on the available personnel. That’s a fool’s game, though, because we’re never going to attract the high-caliber recruits to beat Arizona, UCLA (and yes, Oregon) at their own methods.

    * Year one: no talent, grind out the clock and play teeth-rattling defense (it worked!)
    * Year two: give the ball to Gary, he’ll figure something out (it kinda worked!)
    * Year three: hope freshmen become better as sophomores and no one gets injured (did not work)

At this point, I would be on board with a reversion to the first year where we know we don’t have the most talented roster but they’ll bust their ass to keep the other team from scoring and have smart possessions on offense. Recruit players who fit the system rather than keep re-designing the system to fit the roster.

Unfortunately it feels like we’re at the point where desperation can creep in and well-laid plans get thrown out the window in search of short term wins (see: Jerry Pettibone converting to “flex-bone” offense to stave off critics). Hope that’s not the case here.

  3. Good riddance to the video player. Not that I’m against you trying others but that one I didn’t find to be user friendly. Jmo

    • I agree. It was somewhat useful but a bit unfriendly. They needed new content every day and the content needed to rotate on its own. They also needed varying ads.

  4. I don’t really comment here, but I’m glad to see the video player gone. On my laptop it wasn’t an issue, but I have a desktop with a squarer screen, and it covered up a significant portion of the comments.

  5. I thought the video player was a good idea but should have been located on the bottom or side of the page. It kept reappearing in the middle which blocked the written content.

  6. Nemec’s “big surprises” or however the hell he categorized it were kind of a let down, so I will have to take solace in more bad news for the Quacks. Dorsey has declared AND is hiring an agent and their softball team now has more losses than the Beaver baseball team. Here’s hoping Dylan Brooks is outta here too and that 5 star freshmen can go win the natty on his own.

  7. Moran article on Grad Transfer Berger:

“But as a redshirt junior last season, Berger was surprised as his minutes ebbed and flowed. He would play more than 30 minutes one night and less than five another. Younger players earned greater minutes and by the middle of the season, Berger said he made an internal call on his future.

“The minutes those guys were getting were very much earned,” Berger said. “Credit to them. At the same time, as years went on, I felt like it was time for me to move on. I have no regrets whatsoever.”

No offense (or pun intended) but maybe he should have went DII instead of returning west to a DI school?

  8. Well, how about this from the GT:

“Contrary to previous reports, the Beavers are still one victory shy of matching the conference’s all-time record for consecutive wins (the Pac-12’s official record book was incorrect).

Arizona State won 24 straight to open the 2010 season before falling at Oregon. The Sun Devils went on to win the Pac-10 and reach the College World Series.”

  9. I thought the video player was a good concept though it had it’s issues as others have noted. I find that the twitter video feeds are nice when they are available. Some videos appear on facebook. I wonder about putting up a separate page on Angrybeavs with video links, or something like the twitter feed with videos only. It’s also very helpful to find game stream links, so those could be on the same page. I know it’s a lot of work to keep that going, but maybe there is a way to automate the process.

  10. My understanding is that Spring ball was moved up this year so that the Football staff could be more active in recruiting prior to Fall ball. Have I missed the posts or has it been silent? Anyone have any insight into what/who the Football coaches are working on?

    • As a side note, I see that Slick Willie says he plans to move the toilet seat spring practice up next year as well. Claims a Feb or Mar practice will let his recruiters hit the road at a good time.

In truth, word is the annual release of new fortune cookie verse’s happens in Feb.

    • This will likely be a trend across the nation. Apr 15th to the end of May is the spring evaluation period. Beavs normally practiced after spring break so it didn’t help.

Coaches now have the entire period to travel and have much more time to plan beforehand where they are going to go.

    • I know some of the coaches were on the road, visiting the east coast last week. Saw some tweets about coach Hall, coach Chad and Rushing were in Louisiana and Georgia. DB Eddie Smith, Treston Decoud’s god brother lives near New Orleans, so i would guess he got a visit. I have a feeling he will be a beav, but he’s getting looks from some pretty good teams.

Other than that assumotion, I dont know who else got visits, but we did see a couple if new offers over the last week.

Agree though, all i see online is players visiting other campuses for spring games and junior days, but it’s mostly quiet on the OSU front right now.

    • Darn, and the Mighty Kwan was slated to start in CF!

Seriously, how do ya think this effects the preparation/mentality for the series with Meggs this weekend?

      • Gonzaga spp.

They will have rested arms and legs. Psychologically though it’s much harder because they will want to sweep, but will have to maintain the streak to do it.

        • The streak won’t matter until next week.

We want two TD wins in all of them. Anything less, and it will be Scott Barnes’ head!!!

        • When I asked the question it was the psychology part that worried me. Sometimes it is better to stay busy and not have too much time to think about the upcoming challenge. Casey is gonna have to mask his intense side and keep these guys loose; popsicles and slip ‘n slide??

      • It’s a nice break for the team after a couple walk offs and the long saturday game. Mulholland should be given some extra time to rest since he’s a freshman. Maybe only available on Sat and Sun.

          • Weather not looking so hot here in Seattle. Steady rain today with showers being forecasted for tomorrow and Friday. Thinking they will have to play 2 on Saturday. Hopefully they can squeeze in a game tomorrow or Friday.

  11. Duvivier has transferred to Georgetown.

Also, Joah Robinett has moved from OLB to TE. Too bad, cause I really like that guy on defense, based on the small amount of time he played last year. I suppose we’re a little thin at TE, so the move makes sense given how many guys played OLB last year.

  12. As I recall (not necessarily a reliable indicator), he was interested in finance and government, so that would be a good choice for him.

  13. Baseball America sees Oregon State’s best prospect as Jake Thompson!

Ranked #61 of the top 100 prospects for the 2017 draft. Includes HS players too.

Heimlich is #84 and Harrison is #98.

No signees were listed. Kyler Mahan is listed as the #100 best HS prospect though.

  14. Hollins signed today finalizing the recruiting class for the fall.

    I think it’s a good class.
    Thompson
    Reichle
    Hollins
    Transfer guy

    Starting lineup
    PF – Eubanks
    F – Tinkle
    G – E. Thompson
    G – STJ
    G – McLoughlin

    Bench
    F -Kone
    F – Big G
    G – Manuel
    G – Reichle
    F – Hollins
    F – Transfer guy

Stacy, Sanders, Dahlen won’t see any time other than blowouts.

On paper, this looks like a decent team.

      • Could sign one more depending on whether N’Diaye comes back after a medical redshirt and any other possibilities that I am not aware of to open a spot.

        • N’Diaye has been hurt forever and seemed to play less than that even when he was injury-free.
Neither Robinson nor Tinkle gave N’Diaye many minutes and pulled him quickly when he made a mistake. Hard to know if Rupp could’ve coached up N’Diaye. So far, I’m not convinced Rupp deserves his reputation as a good, big man coach.

And, Tinkle had previously recruited the UMass player when T coached at Montana. I fear he has a recruiting comfort zone and not sure it bodes well for the Beavs.

          • Having recruited some transfer previously is everyone’s comfort zone. You have to remember that the kids being recruited are independent people themselves. And they value relationships more than a coach would, because theirs is the only one on which they’re focused. It’s the only reason we hear anything about the possibility of Vance Jackson looking at us.

I also wonder about Rupp. He seems to be hanging his “big man” hat on Andrew Bogut. But I don’t see much in that direction. Looking back at Tinkle’s Montana teams, he always had great development from the guards.

So maybe you have a point with “comfort” where Rupp is involved. In the world of what you have shown lately, he’s falling behind.

          • I should amend that with the thought that Drew has learned a lot in the last year. And that doesn’t happen in a vacuum. You all rag on G. But I love the kid. And I see him being a major producer as an uppercassman.

Oh yeah… he’s not yet an upperclassman.

So Rupp is doing something. And I love that the baby hook is a part of something. It is the most destructive force in hoops… when it works.

The miss on N’Diaye is troubling on both CR and WT fronts. It’s a language and culture thing that neither could crack. The university as a whole will learn from this and cover that contingency. So it is what it is. Cheikh also gets a great education. So that is what that is. He was an immense blank slate who was lost in a coaching transition. So Rupp did fail in trying to make him a whole big instead of a controlled one… like a Ben Wallace type.

            That’s a forgivable miss.

          • Yeah I don’t think people realize
            A) how young Big G is and
            B) just how much of a project he was to begin with

We need Eubanks to come back for this season but next year with a young Jack Wilson and a veteran Big G the frontcourt will be very solid

          • Kone reflects redundantly upon any coach. He’s going to shine on his own accord. So we can only derive a system which is open to independence from his development. But a great part of his discipline and problem solving in the future will be guided by his elders.

If he keeps up with the development on his right hand within ten feet, he could be deadly on this level and beyond. He just looked like someone who wasn’t comfortable with his rehab, so he played stiff for a majority of the season. He will lose that and return to his norm.

Little Tinks suffers from his style. He has wrist problems because he tried to take an up-and-under game to the Pac level. You’re gonna get hacked. You’re gonna take free throws.

Let’s go back to the former. Those are really big people hacking you on your up-and-under. Yeah… you’re going to have wrist problems. Post up with bttb moves. Play the short corner and elbows, and step out when the D collapses on what you created. Stop diddling with the in-betweens.

          • My take on Big G.

I sit, essentially on the court (season tickets), and you can’t get much closer to the action.

IMHO, Big G is listed at 6’11” but plays like he’s 6’8″ or 6′ 9″.

        • I’m too lazy to look up the numbers, but I thought with Dew no longer being enrolled and Duvivier gone that we would still have 1 more spot. Figured the UMass transfer took Duvivier’s spot.

  15. WTF??………………..damn that Meggs!
If you need a refresher on why THE SNUB is aptly named, this piece from the GT lays out much of the argument.

BUT, and here is the mind blower, didja know that Meggs is still the only PAC12 representative on the (too powerful) West Regional Advisory Committee ?

The piece also includes insight into the approach Casey is taking (publicly) to the series with the dawgs. He says, “every weekend gets bigger if you win,… “I just think that’s dictated by if you win or lose. Every weekend in the Pac-12, as you start to accumulate games, is big. We don’t look at any weekend as any bigger than any other one.” ………Wanna bet?

    • I never really understood how you can have active head coaches on the “advisory committee” and if so why wouldn’t you have Pat Casey on it? I still get pissed off about the snub, so I really shouldn’t read about it any more. It should have been investigated if that was even possible. I know Casey was pissed when they didn’t make it in 2009 with a 28-24 record, but sub 30 wins is a more difficult argument despite the strong SOS. It was a travesty, I hope it fuels a fire and beat down of the Fuskies.

    • Why would you hate them? Dorsey’s a good kid. I wish him success, and I think he’s the only real NBA talent on the team. Brooks loves himself, but he’s still a good kid. Bell can’t box out on FTs… which could be why he knows how to react when he’s not boxed out on FTs.

They made a final four run, and you can never take that away from them. Worse yet, it was the first such run for the school in history, and they had that taken away from them by everyone conflating a failed second-rate tourney that had to be bailed out by the NCAA (yes… the NCAA) with the actual NCAA Tourney. So we got this constant campy lie instead of the actual excitement and history-making those players deserved. This is what happens when you go all tartan. Your fans are ignorant as all hell, and you disrespect the actual effort put forth by your current roster because you’re stuck on a lie related to some pretend tradition.

I wish them the best of luck in their future careers. I think about six of them can earn a really nice grub stake at hoops. And I think one will make a career of it. Congrats to them.

    • Players don’t seem to be the difference. Altman leaving would make the difference but he’ll be there until he retires. Too old to move someplace else. He’s a teflon coach, using transfers to fill his teams and still have success, surviving a player’s scandal that almost any other coach would not have.

  16. Weather looking pretty decent today. Should be able to get in the game later this afternoon. There may be some stoppages due to rain but nothing that prevents it from being completed.

    Go Beavs!
