  1. Predicting Drew gets the starts tonight. Would be fun if they turned on the radar gun too. I think the only time it was on was at ASU.

  2. Oregon’s pitching staff has been pretty unreluable this year outside of their Friday/Saturday starters. Since neither of those guys will be playing tonight and given our pen’s depth, I would guess this one goes in our favor.

    • Register Guard article indicates the ucks will use several arms tonight, but not their expected mid-week guy who went 4.1 innings Sunday. Obviously, not any of the regular starters either.

What about the Beavs? If Bill’s prediction holds and Drew gets the start, I’m thinking Max E. also sees the mound tonight. Other than 5 pitches last Sunday, he hasn’t been around much. There were reports of a back problem and also of a sore arm; he must now be available and would benefit from work tonight.

There you have it, 25-30 pitches each from Drew and Max. Who else? Hickey?
Are any bullpen arms off limits, given a couple days before the spoiled children arrive?

Here is the RegGuard piece, includes some quotes from their ss on how big this game is for them (quotes which Parker tried to make bulletin board material today)

  3. I think win or lose does not help either team

Beavers lose it is just what the 4th on the season so does not matter and a win does do much either
If the Ducks lose there season is in trouble so the game is not worth the risk

  4. Make of it what you will, but I notice the twitter posts by the two baseball teams announcing the rain out have one (significant?) difference: the ucks state that the game will be rescheduled, no mention of resched by Beavs Baseball Twitter.

Only a couple possibilities for resched; right before the conference series vs zeros, and just before the final reg season series vs Abilene Christian.

Anyone see an upside for OSU to resched this one?

  5. jack-o, is it true that you’re dating Bruce, oops I mean Caitlyn Jenner? You could honeymoon in Moscow. Now, that’s building a bridge, like in Greco Roman style. Remember, ask but don’t tell is long past. Like chung said, it’s just between us two, I wont tell a soul. Hey, think we could add 3 or 4 more Supreme Court justices, like FDR wanted? Don’t stay up to late, see you in a couple of days. Angry, be warned, don’t drop your soap around jack-o

    • Why would I date Caitlyn Jenner? When I look at her, all I see is a typical Trump supporter.

Besides, my wife wouldn’t like it.

Question: Why would anyone want to honeymoon in Moscow? I can see maybe playing around in the Bitterroots or getting a cabin on Pend Oreille. But a college town? That’s pretty lame.

Chung? Like… Patrick or Wang? Sounds like Merle Haggard, regardless.

And FDR wanted six more justices, as well as about 40 more on the lower court. He did this because at that time you couldn’t just add justices that would rule in favor of your programs. So he concocted some pretend discussion about how the current roster was maybe too old, and maybe they didn’t realize that ruling women and children could be subject to wages that would make an indentured servant laugh was maybe a part of the old ideas that made America go bankrupt.

But the SCOTUS outfoxed FDR. They started ruling in favor of all his policies, and he lost support for his, “crony fogeys can be real dicks” argument. They sure showed him.

      • Jack is a perfect example of retirement gone wrong. Too much free time on his hands and so few hobbies outside of Angrybeavs.

        • Close, but not close.

I will say it’s a lot healthier than going out to the bars (or casinos… so many casinos) when travelling. But you’ll find as you get older that people will do things for you just because you’re old and you ask them to do it.

Paying them money doesn’t hurt the process either.

Anyone know what goes on in Cleveland? I’ve only ever driven through.

          • I live two hours from there. It is not a great city, but there are a few cool things to do. The Jake is a beautiful ballpark. There is a cool bar scene by lake erie, but I don’t know how hopping it is in the non summer months.

          • That’s about the sense I get from people. How does it compare to Detroit? I’ve spent a lot of time there in the last three years (relatively), and there’s a sense of community, energy and sustainable growth on the local level despite the state doing everything they can to just be miserable to people.

So I take reports of “that city is just a horrible stain on the armpit of humanity” with a grain of salt.

          • I lived in Detroit in the early 2000s, so my info is dated. I don’t have much nice to say about Detroit, so I would prefer Cleveland by far, unless you hate snow in the winter.

          • I can see that. Kilpatrick was worse than Trump by far. I can’t imagine what the city must have been like a decade ago. Hip hop mayor, indeed.

It’s not so bad now. I would much rather spend my time there than other recent visits like Baltimore, Nashville, KC or Indianapolis. The last two are just horrible towns. And I used to go to the Indy 500 every other year or so. When did the world decide to take a shit on them? Anywhere in Missouri is just a miserable experience, and you can’t drink in half the state, it seems. How do you have dry counties in the land of Budweiser?

I will say that driving around the urban sprawl to the northwest of Detroit is just sad. It’s a bunch of puddles with strip malls between them. Northeast of the city is where the posh digs are. I think that’s the only part of the state that doesn’t have the worst roads I’ve ever driven on, including Idaho’s roads, circa 1980.

  6. Just in case you wondered, The recently proposed El Chapo Act is actually an acronym, meaning ” Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order”.

    • It’s for drug trafficking, which is good, but the problem is they will expand that power to seize assets from citizens for no reason. They already do this with civil forfeiture, even if the person didn’t commit a crime. This government is going to get overrun if they keep meddling with citizens.

        • Yes, True. And easily fixed.
Stop being cute with acronyms and make it a true El Chapo Law; apply specifically to the drug kingpin and his (reported) $14 billion.
Then, take the next step and define how those funds will be used.

          • Do we get all the black bag assets associated with his enterprise?

It will be fun to see how we get that money from Mexico, since they were the ones who caught him and seized all his assets. We’ve been negotiating with them for almost a year now how to divvy it up. Now we get this wrench thrown in. They didn’t have to negotiate according to international law. They were just acting in good faith.

Btw, this idea isn’t Lyin’ Ted’s idea. If you’ve read about his assets being seized, you would have seen this idea floated by trolls in the comment sections of numerous articles.

Who says the people in charge don’t read blogs and comments?

          • Pretty easy for those pointy headed lawyers to craft a bill which, without naming him, criminalizes activity narrow enough that few if any others fit.
How to recover the $ from a foreign government, now that’s a problem.

    • Regardless of whether or not you think building a wall is a less productive equivalent to moving holes from here to there, is anyone disturbed that this is the kind of person who earns 11 digit numbers when we make our war on drugs?

      • It’s more than just drugs, these guys are like the Mexican sopranos. Human trafficking, drugs, prostitution, gambling, gun trafficking, just about anything illegal they do it. But yes drugs are probably their largest revenue builder. And they are only really known because of the war on drugs.

  7. ESPN letting go of quite a few people today. Couple PAC12 blog writers are among the 100 or so leaving.

Looks like they may be shifting toward more of a commentary based format like cable news vs straight reporting of the news.

  8. Timbers unveiled 50 million 4K additional seating for east side of their stadium. Will soon have multiple levels. If I was Scott Barnes I would be getting detailed blueprints and speaking with Merritt Paulson for easy knowledge transfer that woild be useful for future West Side of Reser Stadium. The design requires no major towers so it would seem could be done in a year. Seeing how the west side will need complete replacement and they are looking for options that add only modestly to capacity but are effective at adding alot to the gameday atmosohere, these designs seem about as good as Beaver Nation could hope for. Won’t be the true mirror some want, but woth design lile thia we could still get a different multi level option that looks great and ia more affordable.

Since we will also be replacing our lowest area on the west side, unlike the Timbers, the cost for OSU would be more like 65 million. Within budget for what OSU is likely to spend. All in all it would probably add only 3000 seats for OSU to the current 42,000 and change. That would be a very functional and modern setup for Oregon State that should put them between 45-46K seats with plenty of amenities and a solid atmosphere for football success. As far as a gameplan for the next 30 years this seems a very good option for the Beavers. Hopefully Andersen and Barnes get a detailed look soon at what the Timbers are building, as most Oregonians would agree they are the best at creating world class gameday atmosphere. Beavs would be well served to follow suit.

    • See in details of article they will complete in two phases over two off seasons but differrence with this and a true mirror plan with brick towers that also takes two off seasons is that with the plan Timbers are using, if OSU did similar, Reser should be useable each season. Maybe Phase one does not add seats but loses little or none and then the second phase with a higher level or two stacked directly above could then add the additional seats to take us above 45K again.

If Andersen gets the program in the thick of Pac-12 title mix a couple times over next 5 years and we had this kinda atmosphere, Reser is going to finally look great to recruits and the program will be well suited to be a contender with some staying power. Andersen just needs a bowl or two and if the momentum is there I think they will firm up westside plans. With something like this they could start in Spring 2021 for first phase and complete the 2nd over the summer of 2022 to be ready by that fall’s home opener.

  9. Jack-O what’s your take on J FK getting USA into a war in Viet Nam? Bet some stinking Republican is at fault? Spin honey, spin. Then try Bay of Pigs. Next spin the Cuban missile crises into a dem victory. Anyone care to know about Uncle Walter and Kennedy whores? Spin it baby. Dems and the KKK. Yep, bet you can find a Republican in the woodshed there as well.

    • got to stop the extreme left just like you have to stop the extreme right and hey who does not like a little war here and there

    • There is no objective viewpoint that can say JFK for “getting USA into a war in Viet Nam.”

US involvement in French Indochina began in 1954 when France smartly left that hornet’s nest… to stupidly put all their resources into another hornet’s nest in North Africa. US involvement was limited to John Wayne and a bunch of grunts who wore berets to make the Commies think they were French. We went there because Joe McCarthy and his drinking buddies had a hard-on for the slant-eyed Commies ever since reds and queers in Truman’s administration lost China. And America was still feeling the sting of losing half the Korean peninsula and wanted to show them what’s what.

At least that worked out in the end.

Actual combat troops didn’t enter Nam until 1965. And LBJ was beholden to the same contractors that idiot boy and Cheney were when they gifted them Iraq. I really don’t know why you didn’t go after him instead of LBJ, other than stupid is just how you roll.

I can go on for days about the Texas royalty of that time. But I will spare you this once. Just go look at a list of the names on the residence halls at Rice, and you get the idea. Well, a functioning idiot would get the idea. You? Maybe not.

I also don’t know why you want me to defend the Dems when they’re wrong. I’m not going to do that. I’ll correct the prevailing echo chamber crap I endlessly hear parroted by unthinking pretend patriots. But correcting stupid is not the same as defending wrong.

Go look up the Cuban missile crisis on the google. What got us there was crony capitalism and the remnants of the previously mentioned drunk Commie hunter and his ilk. And don’t think J. Edgar Jenner wasn’t complicit… between setting up peep shows on everyone who wasn’t him. There are just too many names to name for that whole period. Again, google is your friend. I will say that it was a cautionary tale. The reason we didn’t give air support or invade was the same reason we shouldn’t do anything to North Korea now. It’s also the reason JFK and Kruschev agreed that “offensive” tactical weapons would be removed in the end. The Rooskies carried nukes amongst the fleet during the blockade. And Castro threatened to blow up beaches if they were tread upon by Americans.

Kaboom! Dead Murikans. Remember the Maine… and shit.

Not all whites who advocated against slavery back in the day did so because they thought it was wrong. Many did so because they wanted to keep their new states lily white… after they killed all the injuns. Slavery was outlawed in Oregon for this very reason, which is why we have some really stupid remnants of those losers, the Confederate States of Losers, rooted deeply in parts of our state.

Fly the battle flag of a seditious bunch of turds if you like. It just makes you a seditious turd.

      • You should go into comedy writing. You didn’t touch on the Dem’s love affair with the kkk, or Turkey and Cuban Missiles, you know kind of like Iran nuclear deal. Oh and what about Uncle Walter and the Kennedy whores. Papa joe being all Nazi kind of stuff. Chi-town dead people voting. LBJ and the democrats killing machine. Who gave the USSR the blueprints to the bomb? Were the R’s innocent? Clean, like with a cloth!

        • We removed missiles from Turkey in exchange for Russia removing offensive missiles from Cuba. Do you think there’s something sinister about that? Do you think we can’t dive into any foreign relations and find out the CIA has done some dirty shit regardless of who is POTUS?

Are you so fucking naive that you think the US is always innocent? Or do you always just go sockpuppet and trot out tired memes which make you look dumb? Should we start talking about the United Fruit Company?

What do you want to know about the KKK and the Dems? They were synonymous in Southern politics until LBJ signed the civil rights act. Then they became Republicans. Strom Thurmond, anyone?

Sort of shows you how policy positions among the two parties are so similar, and why I think you’re immensely stupid for believing otherwise.

A couple remained Dems and squared that with doing penance for the rest of their lives. What I addressed is that the KKK wasn’t the only way people were racist. They remain the largest and most violent terrorist organization in the history of the US. And people like to associate with them by flying the battle flag of the seditious bunch of losers, the Confederate States of Losers. But I’m not sure what you want to say about political affiliation having to do with any of it. Scum is scum no matter their party affiliation.

        • Chicago voting improprieties… Mississippi did the same for the other side the same year… interstate crosscheck removed over two million eligible and legal voters from the rolls last year (and that’s without doing any sort of deep dive on the almost 4 million who were affected).

Klaus Fuchs was a Soviet spy.

It’s funny that you think R’s are clean. You seem to be the cloth.

    • If you want to know what the dumbest thing Deferment Donald, the dopy dastard, has done or said this week, it was yesterday when he said that human trafficking was at an all time high.

Think about that one for a second. This is the same guy who said a couple months ago that Frederick Douglass was doing so well.

      • You have to pass the bill, so you can find out what’s in it. Hill’s incoming sniper fire. Mc Bama’s Peace medal. $400,000 from his wallstreet boys. Hill’s cook book. Slick willie’s cigar shop.

        • Any bill passed is known. The trope you parrot is about one created by Bob Dole and known to all. Most of these bills are written by lobbyists and known by everyone. But none of them will tell you this because you’re dumb enough to think they’re not dividing and conquering, laughing all the way to the bank while you unthink yourself into the same catatonic trance that MUST be someone else’s fault.

You seem to have a problem compartmentalizing social agendas and governmental structure. There’s an old story about Stalin wanting to find someone to have his back within his party. He chose a half dozen or so loyalists and lined them up one day. And he asked them what they thought Communism meant. They started repeating the rote propaganda designed to make them loyal party zombies, stuff like, “It’s the people having power in a shared struggle against the forces of evil,” or some shit. When he got to Kruschev, Nikita said, “Communism is a warm bowl of borscht and a good pair of boots.”

Guess who became Stalin’s right hand man.

The point is that sating the people gives tyrants the cover necessary to be tyrants. As long as they aren’t the “others,” they remain compliant. There’s nothing inherently evil about feeding and clothing your constituents. But when you segment them and pit them against each other, you are no liberal.

I’ll give Dipshit Donald credit for blowing up the TPP. But that’s because it ceded more power to corporations. Being the moron he is, he doesn’t understand that an actual treaty which gives us trading blocks which speak to the wishes of labor and how said labor can act to use comparative advantages to put themselves to work. I’m not going to get into game theory, because I think this discussion is so far over your head as it is. Suffice it to say that treaties which demand we have an advantage in every sector are not, in fact, treaties. They’re just extortion. They engender ill will and cause more problems than the short term advantages gained.

And you’re buying into the con. You are a sucker. And since one is born every minute, you’re not alone. I’d like a time machine so we can go back and give you an education which would allow you to think for yourself. I’d like for you to recognize that your continued reliance on this ignorance only makes you look like a fool with no capacity for thought… or even a capacity to use the google.

Until they completely take net neutrality away (a process you support) you have this wonderful resource at your disposal which could teach you to save your children from the unproductive slavery of thought which has become your fate. Do you not care about your own children? Do you want them to grow into unthinking zombies who spew dumb group think as you are doing now? Or do you want them to be fully armed with the power of knowledge?

Oooh! Let’s talk climate change. Can you break away from the propaganda created by Big Oil after their own internal studies showed it to be true? I’d love for you to opine on what you think of evolution. How about speaking up on 4D5 signing his Teapot Dome EO yesterday? Do you even know what Teapot Dome is?

Maybe we can talk about the Kentucky Coal Museum and what they’re doing to power their facility and why they’re doing so?

You don’t have to hold on to the dumb that was fed you in the echo chambers you seem to inhabit. Step out into the light, and take a look around for once. You might shed a tear at the wasted time you’ve lost, sort of like that Italian guy who played an American Indian on those old anti-pollution/littering commercials.

        • I’m pretty sure masturbation is masturbation. Alliteration isn’t as fun. It just provides an opportunity to vary 4D5’s condition from day to day.

Here’s a thought exercise for you. Imagine your father left you $400m in the early 70’s. Now imagine you took that money and put it all into an index fund tracking the Dow. Take $10k per year, and hire the best tax attorney in New York.

How much do you think you would be worth now?

That is the bar for what determines success in Dipshit Donald’s dealings. Anything less is failure.

          • Sorry… that’s $400m that the Trump family was worth at that time. That money was shifted to Dumbshit over time, unbeknownst to his siblings, apparently. And that’s after Fred had to bail Dipstick out a couple times to avoid bankruptcy, an embarrassment he would eventually get used to.

And I should say that a fiduciary would tell you to buy one of each of the 30 stocks in the Dow, because I don’t know of any index funds. But it’s the same thing… without any fees. You can buy some etf’s which track it. But the point is to just take your money and do nothing with it over the years to give yourself a control set. So the simple math would be (~21,000/~800)$400m.

          • That number comes from the second lawsuit against Dastardly Don and his father in which they were guilty of racism according to the FHEO.

To be fair, it was a fairly new law. So maybe they didn’t know that the business practices they performed before the law was enacted were unlawful after the fact.

Or maybe they were just scum then, as he is now.

    • I’m not annoyed. I think your cute. Stupid and ignorant, but cute. You work very hard at ignoring fact and using fiction as a basis for your opinions. $400,000 for a McBama speech and its all about President Trump in your drug scrambled brain. Nancy was the one that had to pass McBama Care before she could know what’s in it, but lets talk about climate change, inoculations, the moon shot for cancer cure. Pathetic little Pocahontas and you still believe in dims.

      • Presidents should cash in once they are out of office… beats them cashing in while in office. Got to be some incentive to do the job because someone with that much influence could be making way more in the private sector.

        • “Presidents should cash in once they are out of office.” Is it an entitlement? The Obamas have a rather nice lifetime retirement, multi- millions of dollars in book advances, can work as lawyers commanding the highest of salaries. Perhaps he will donate the $400,000 to a low income health clinic, but I doubt it. No reason to think ex-presidents have lofty ideals – In the long-ago shadow of this one’s ascendency, it was thought possible.

      • What does Obama have to do with any of the dumb groupthink you spewed above?

You can go back to my opinions on the ACA when it was passed on this very site. I literally said it was an insurance giveaway, and that Obama was a Wall Street lackey. It looks like he’s getting paid for his work now, although Bob Dole and Mitt Romney should get their cuts.

        Oh wait… they do.

      • Wait… inoculations?

Please, please, please talk about those. Forget everything else. I want to talk about those now.

Go ahead and give me the lowdown on those.

  10. http://portlandtribune.com/pt/256-sports/kerry-eggers/356370-236328-beavers-staff-makes-pitch-to-be-oregon-states-best-ever

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2017/04/anticipation_builds_as_oregon.html#incart_river_index

Couple nice articles about the pitching staff.

Drew expected to pitch this weekend but I still think it’s going to be under a couple scenarios.

    1. Starts Saturday and goes 1 inning.
    2. Relieves when the game’s outcome is decided.

Should be on a strict pitch count in any scenario.

    • Good links, thanks.
I was ready to agree with your scenario #1, but with the thought that he’d go 2 innings or 25-30 pitches. Eggers, OTOH, seems positive that a relief stint will be the way Drew is seen.

Once again, mention of a sports psychologist; has anyone heard of another coach at OSU addressing the mental side of things with a pro? Seems every year there are indications that Casey goes that way.

    • Just Do It becomes Do Something?

Now that’s a shitty ‘logo.’ And who decided “do something” was logo making worthy?

Do something. You know, anything, just don’t stand around. Is that the message they are trying to send?

It does fit their recent stand on athletics, do something like raping or stealing, no worries, duck high will look the other way.

    • That can’t be real. They wouldn’t allow something that bad to represent them. Hold on.

okay… followed the link through, and it leads to their verified twitter account

I’m going to say it’s maybe unauthorized, and the real marketing peeps haven’t yet seen it?

    • Wow, they’re really going grassroots. First they start talking nonsense about only using their school colors on the uniforms, and now they come out with a logo that encourages free thinking. I must say, their owner must be thrilled with his investment.

    • “Do Something”? What? That’s usually what I tell a shitty employee who can’t do anything…….at least “do something”. Wow, inspirational log…………this has to be a joke.

    • May be appropriate. I think the Fortune Cookie Coach should have low expectations.

      Chip Kelly? Win the day.
      Fortune Cookie? Do something.

It’s likely he’ll meet that standard.

    • It’s business jargon for nfl scouts
      Synergy……shift a paradigm……core competency….bleeding edge.
I have heard these used in my office by junior management in the last month. It almost makes you want to run a killdozer through the front doors.

    • Chicago apparently gave up a lot to move up one spot and take some QB named Trubisky at #2, likely got played by trading partner SF…..

Fournette at #4 to Jacksonville and McCAffrey at #8 to Carolina are pretty high picks for RBs these days….

But no, no real shockers….just the usual with some teams with bad front offices making bad decisions…

      • The thought for the Bears must have been that the browns had an offer in for the #2 pick and didn’t want to let their guy get away so they upped their offer.

  11. Just went and looked at the picks. I’d say the four teams who nailed it were the Jets, the Racial Slurs, the Niners (because of their second pick), and the Pats.

Second tier would be Cleveland. They didn’t screw up, but all their players have ifs attached. They’ll be good IF they grow. It’s Cleveland. If all three are still there in five years, or if they trade out for value, it will have been a good day. I think Denver, Zony and Miami got steals as well.

Anyone who picked DEs come next. I see a lot of talent, but there are a bunch of projects. I think Tampa is the only TE pick with any first round value. Dallas’ and New Orleans’ picks are about right for what they need. But NO could have had more.

WR and QB picks are not exactly impressive this year. And what the fuck is Oakland thinking?

  12. Since this is a general thread, here’s a question for this site’s rock guitar experts and aficionados: what’s your evaluation of the guitar-playing skills of Carrie Brownstein, lead guitarist for Sleater-Kinney? Just curious…..

    • Hey Silver! Long time.
Regarding the question: sloppy, bad timing, but uses the sour notes to good effect to create drone/noise collages. Hides flaws behind a wall of fuzz most of the time. This is pretty typical in the genre, and I personally like the rawness of it, but she’s pretty bad on a technical basis.

      • A good assesment of her technical skills. I love the riffs, though. I really dig the drummer, although I don’t have any ability to assess drummer technique.

        • Thanks. I love a player like Mascis, even though he is considered technically deficient. Great phrasing and melody. Sleater Kinney isn’t on that level of playing, but they’re a poor (wo)man’s version of that style. I’d assess a drummer by how well they keep time and their “feel”, which is a bit intangible (but basically where on the beat they play, swing, or tempo changes to match the mood). Usually the great ones play slightly behind the beat with a lilt. A great example of this is House of the Rising Sun by the Animals. Great feel and lilt. You’ll notice a pattern if you research drummers that most of the ones who have great feel have a jazz background. Even Bonham was trained as a jazz drummer. People don’t realize that. But if you listen to something like Moby Dick (especially live) you can hear it clearly. Listen to the ride cymbal when it comes in.
