Comparing Oregon State and Oregon, which do you think is the better sport to be dominant in: baseball or track and field? Which sport do you think is more relevant nationally?

I don’t think either is a “revenue sport” but both, I would imagine, earn more than the respective average. I wonder how much Oregon benefits/earns from hosting the Olympic trials and other professional/non-NCAA meets?

That said, baseball is one of the 3 core sports (sorry, hockey) in the USA and is the damn national past time for Christ sakes.

Trying to be objective as possible, and it seems pretty even to me… I think it’s a really tough call!

Track by a lot. Baseball is my favorite sport but it doesn’t produce Olympians the way track does. Dominant in track and field means you get to see your college alumni on the world’s biggest stage.

National pride and university pride at the same time! and if they win the gold, they (and you by association!) are the best in the world. Fosbury won the gold while still a student!

Does the f’ing SEC totally run the baseball and softball tourney selections? Beav baseball gets hosed last year and the Gopher softball team got royally screwed this year.

Not one of the sixteen hosts despite….
Best record in the nation at 52-3
#2 ranking in the coaches poll
    #11RPI
Won regular season and conf. tournament.
    25 game win streak

The bias of these NCAA selection committees truly has become ridiculous. This year, thirteen SEC schools fielded softball teams. The selection committee awards tournament berths to every one of those thirteen SEC schools. The selection committee then awards eight of those SEC schools with top-16 seeds — and first-round hosting privileges. Meanwhile, Minnesota — the #1 team in the coaches’ poll — is denied a spot in the top-16 and is being sent to Alabama for first-round/regional play. Would love to hear the head of the selection committee try to justify these obviously biased and unfair decisions. Would probably sound a lot like the specious explanations offered up last year by the head of the NCAA baseball selection committee (Joel Erdmann of South Alabama) for screwing Oregon State out of a berth in the 2016 tournament. http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2016/05/oregon_state_baseball_coach_pa_2.html

FWIW – Moore ranked as #2 backup QB in NFL:

“When Ryan Tannehill went down with a torn ACL in Week 14 of the 2017 NFL season, Moore was forced to take the reins of the playoff-bound Dolphins (a position both McCarron and Stanton have been dealt in the past two years). His performance for the rest of that season—a career-best 63.2%, eight touchdowns and three picks—was impressive enough to make him the biggest year-over-year riser in these rankings….”

I thought it was interesting – and positive – that Andersen, Rueck and Tinkle attended last night’s game. Perhaps with the crowd sizes the baseball team is getting, the attendance by Portland/I-5 corridor metro area fans, they figure its a good time to be seen and to talk to fans (donors?)? Or is it less strategic than that and more just about following a great team:

“In a game that that Oregon State football coach Gary Andersen, men’s basketball coach Wayne Tinkle and women’s basketball coach Scott Rueck each attended, Andersen reserved special praise for the baseball team as he stopped near the press box while circling the concourse.

“I love these dudes,” he said.”

The pregame event at the nearby Beavs Store was to be attended by all the coaches you mentioned as well as Barnes. A strategic move to tag on to the popularity of the baseball team right now and to visit with fans/donors.
Some of these guys do show up at home baseball without the fanfare, that’s more about following a great team.
      It’s all good, IMHO.

So is anyone else giggling a little as we head into this weekend?

I’m thinking the season worked out such that we get the equivalent of an SEC type 1AA set-up headed for the playoffs. The team can play its depth and maybe juice a couple stat lines to finish the season. Fine tuning and rest.

I was wondering at the beginning of the year why this series was where it was. Now it doesn’t matter.

    • Bill says:
      VA:F [1.9.22_1171]

Here’s how I’d plan it out the rest of the way

WSU – Same rotation. Luke, Drew, Jake. Drew limited to 75 pitches, others at 90. Go with the A lineup for the first two games. If they win those first two, sit Adley and others and mix in some bench guys in the 3rd game.

ACU – Same rotation. Fehmel start on Thurs if his arm is good to go, otherwise Britton. Max pitch count for any guy is 80 -85. Mix in bench guys in the lineup for the first two games. Go with the A lineup for the last two to have them sharp into the regionals.

Going to need 4 solid starters for the regionals.

This is a tough part of coaching. The team is doing too good but you can’t pull them back because they will lose all the momentum.

      • Jack Jack says:
        VA:F [1.9.22_1171]
        Rating: 0 (from 0 votes)

You just have to give enough to stretch your legs. And you also want the bench guys to come in and give some enthusiasm, some new energy headed into the post season.

It’s hard to see any tough part about coaching this team. Putting them together was the hard part. But they just have this edge to them that if they play their best, you can’t beat them.

Decisions about who to rest and how that effects their mental and physical performance seem to me to be among the most difficult for a head coach.
But, I think Casey has a pretty good handle on it, he said this regarding allowing Adley to play vs ucks and holding him out vs Portland:

“Maybe he can push me around one time, but the next time, maybe not quite,”

One trick vs WSU and ACU will be to get just the right amount of exposure for arms like: Tweedt, Englebrekt, Gambrell, and Mulholland, guys who need to be sharp coming out of the pen.

BTW, Danny up with a piece where he quotes Casey as saying he may move Jake Thompson to Saturday and have Drew go on Sunday this weekend.

They beat my Gophs 3-2, but were helped by a couple DP’s in the last two innings with men on. Gophs killed them in game two and they killed the Goph’s in game three. I hate saying it, but BYU will be tough. They’ve played a lot of close games, and can really hit the ball. They’ve split games with Utah, lost to Oregon close, and lead the West Coast conference with a 20-4 conference record over the likes of San Diego, San Francisco, Gonzaga, and Pepperdine. Their pitching sucks, so not a bad match-up overall, but anything can happen in baseball.

It is interesting that the NCAA considers this type of case beyond it’s scope, however they’ll punish a kid for having a dirty piss test?
I understand the importance of due process here, but I also feel the NCAA can and should punish the staff/admin at Baylor for their attempt to cover up these incidents (allegedly), which shows a lack of institutional control. That should be within their scope, even if the rape charges stay on the state/federal jurisdiction.

And Ed Ray, wtf? The biggest and most disgusting institutional cover up the NCAA has faced, and you can’t even read the report? Maybe he already considered it beyond his scope and didnt think it was the NCAA responsibility? But just spend a few hours on the plane and read the damn thing.

Very disappointing about robinette not sure why he would transfer he saw time as a freshman. He probably wouldn’t play this year but could see substantial time next year. Its kind of weird maybe his heart is in defense.

Couple of guesses, he was pushed down the depth chart at OLB and doesn’t see himself as a TE.

Didn’t put on enough weight to play at DE, which seemed like his natural position out of high school, but his play there was contingent on carrying a higher weight.

Maybe homesick? He’s from San Diego, so that part of the move makes sense.

Suck to see him go, because what little we saw of him was at least promising

That is a bummer. Loved his potential with that length on D. It did seem like a cause for concern when he was moved to TE though.

Is Keith Pankey one of the instructors? It’s never to early to perfect the “fall down and reach out an arm method” of tackling.

Funny, your post made me google “keith pankey injury”, because I seemed to remember him coming back too soon from an acl injury, but my memory is fuzzy.
Came across this old post from Angrybeavs on the topic….good reading. This was before my time on this site, so it was fun to see some of these posts for the first time. Also contains a post about Brandin Cooks flipping from UCLA to OSU, although the link was broken.

Nice. I love that post. The downside of GA is that he doesn’t recruit any Pankey’s, so there’s not going to be any more posts like that most likely. The closest I can think of was the (obvious) error of playing Seth at QB.

The new FCC chief, Ajit Pai, is such a shill for the telecoms industry. The former one, Wheeler, came directly from that industry as well, but actually made some pretty neutral decisions.

Unrelated, but I saw this morning that UW has a 4* and a 5* QB commit in the 2018 class. Oregon State has none.
Seems crazy to me that a guy would pass up being the #1 guy at Oregon State to be the 2nd guy at UW. (Both have Oregon State offers) I suppose coach Peterson has a slightly better track record when it comes to QBs and overall offensive gameplay, but….c’mon….

Coming out of a College Football Playoff year probably helps with the draw to UW. But I agree, it’s a bit concerning that GA can’t attract an upper level QB, especially since we don’t even have an established starter.

    WSU Preview –

A decent hitting team, not much pop but scores runs. Pitching and fielding is their weakness. Little pitching depth.

They are a scrappy team, and with Lees and Spencer there, we know they have good coaches. If they start landing some good talent, this will be a team to watch out for.
