Have at it.

What’s on my mind:

1. The coaching search.

2. I’m wonderer how much digital currencies like Bitcoin are helping the Ducks launder to recruits without any paper trail. Nobody covering sports has mentioned, to my knowledge, how these could be used in recruiting without a paper trail.

Go Beavs.

  1. According to a source close to the situation, Oregon State assistants were not relieved of their duties today in their meeting with Scott Barnes, who told them OSU is looking to secure a head coach by early next week.— Danny Moran (@DannyJMoran) November 26, 2017

    • I guess Barnes is waiting to get told no by Kevin Sumlin? At least he has to try. Not sure why everyone needs to stay on for another week, Hall is already the interim. Moos sent everyone packing except Bray.

    • Welcome to Oregon State. Where the culture is that it’s ok to lose as long as you tried your best (pats head).

It’s ok that you just got grunge fucked by your rival who could’ve hung 90 on you. You tried. And this is why it continues to be a second rate football program. No one from the top of the food chain is committed to building a winning program, changing the culture to become one or even has a clue of the direction needed.

      Bunch of fucking candy asses.

Dear Ed Ray and Scott Barnes,

      Fuck you!

      Signed,

Every donor in Beaver nation you continue to attempt to steal money from by lying through your teeth.

  2. Kevin Sumlin officially fired. Opportunity for OSU to shift the culture with another name that would do it. We’ll they even reach out? Doubt it. Oregon State administration is total bush.

  3. Now this from Oregon State: Assistant contracts will be honored through the end of their terms. They will be working from home and have been asked to leave their offices by Tuesday night. Cory Hall has the option to stay in his office in his role as interim head coach.— Danny Moran (@DannyJMoran) November 26, 2017

So everyone except Hall is essentially gone? Not sure how long their contracts are though.

      • I assume that “clean out your office and work from home” basically means you’re not fired yet, but we don’t think you should be back and we’ll let the new head coach make the decision.

Hall not having to move out though makes it seem like keeping Hall is going to be pushed pretty heavily.

      • Are you shitting me? The Kevin’s and staff get to remotely logon each morning for another year and keep getting the same money playing Candycrush???

        This administration is seriously F’ed!

    • Is that kind of saying, we’re paying you, but you’re not welcomed in person around the program? Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

  4. I’m no phil knight fan, but i’m thankful i get to see both UNC/Mich. State and Duke/Florida tonight in person for cheaper than a Beaver football ticket

  5. Maybe someone can teach me, but why exactly would we want Sumiln at Oregon State? He has been worsening each year at Texas A&M with good recruits, and why would he suddenly do any better at Oregon State? I’m just thinking someone like Baldwin who has a history of winning can do what it takes to win.

  6. Per Canzano:

Source: Oregon State AD Scott Barnes hopped on a plane today and is off to meet with a football coach candidate today.

Feels to me like OSU is still interviewing despite the report on Friday night about it being a done deal.

If you’re reading the tea leaves on timing of OSU AD being on that plane today… likely talking to a coach or two who wanted to wait until after the season ended. That = sitting head coach.

    https://twitter.com/johncanzanobft/status/934902736906108928

  7. I’m calling it now, we will hire someone that’s not on anybody’s list. Kind of like the GA hire. They may have been mentioned in passing here, but no one is considering them.

      • No, it’s going to be a current coach in good standing. Weather that’s a head coach or coordinator I’m not sure. I’m leaning towards head coach. And of course this is all just my personal feeling.

        • If you want a good conspiracy theory, GA was the leak on Friday. That leak made the OSU AD and program look like a dysfunctional shit show that he was completely right to abandon. The only question anyone could ask after Friday night is, “How did you put up with them for so long?”

          • It seems like you are the only one who thinks this ‘leak’ is a big deal. I fail to see why it matters at all. It certainly doesnt matter as much as you seem to think it does.

          • It is a big deal if you believe in things like professionalism and trust.

If it’s not a prank, then you’re talking about how people and/or organizations don’t change. And this kind of disrespect leads to things like 69-10, because it shows an immense amount of disrespect.

I don’t expect many of you here to understand the subtleties of being an adult. But I’m pretty sure there’s a large group here who do understand all this but don’t feel like giving the effort required to teach people who seem not to understand it intuitively.

It’s also funny how Tennessee fan thinks that scuttling the Schiano hire by literally bearing false witness against him is a valid approach to life. They’re still proud of what they did. It’s bunker mentality stupidity in Knoxville right now.

    • That’s ok as long as it’s not a sitting coach in good standing who already has a better job. That didn’t work out too well last time.

  8. I can’t find it now, but i swear there was something a few days ago about an experienced sitting head coach who was going to be or had been interviewed.

  9. Why is Ken Norton Jr seen as a good candidate? He’s been a linebackers coach in college and the NFL and then NFL defensive coordinator for 2.5 seasons. What am I missing?

    • He’s a superb recruiter. He’s also a superb leader.

And… he’s also a sacrificial lamb for Jack Del Rio. He has been hamstrung every year at Oakland, especially this year. You can complain all you want about facilities at OSU, but ours are better than the Davis family has provided for their team ever.

And our facilities are named after the last owner of that team to actually care about the players themselves.

It would be a fitting “fuck you” for Wayne Valley’s alma mater to hire someone who can make the team relevant again… despite the Raiders’ continued failures in management.

  10. we’re presuming Barnes left from CVO. Two jets from EUG were destined for Scottsdale and Van Nuys. That would suggest Graham and Mora, maybe Fisch.

  11. Lol this guy

UPDATE: Oregon State says it has parted ways with its football coaching staff. Cory Hall remains the interim coach. https://t.co/SJ4n547PXq https://t.co/lq5ailzt2U— Danny Moran (@DannyJMoran) November 26, 2017

“Assistants have been told their contracts will be honored through completion, but to leave their offices at the Valley Football Center by Tuesday night. Oregon State initially said the coaches would be working from home, before clarifying that their ‘services are not being retained.'”

If this is true it seems like another snafu. Initially they weren’t fired then a few hours later they said they were fired?

  12. Would Barnes fly to the Bay Area to simply finalize details with Baldwin or is that something where Baldwin should be coming to Corvallis? I don’t know the protocol.

    • I think Barnes flying out of town is a dodge to throw the press off. In the last hour plans from San Bernadino and Fresno have landed at CVO. Barnes probably had GA get on the plane as a decoy while he got down to work.

        • Maybe Marcus McM is coming back and we are wooing him by flying him up to Corvallis? For such a 2nd rate QB (sarc), he only had 332 yards against Boise State for the win. I am so glad this season is over – but the off season isn’t looking any better.

    • The Oaktown flight was at the same time last week.

      Think… HP.

The only times I’ve ever flown out of or into CVO was on an HP jet.

The SBD flight is a regular occurrence as well.

  13. The way the message is being handled I have even less faith in SB and ER. How hard is it to put out an accurate statement to the press?

  14. Barnes emptied the cash registers from the Reser concession stands, hijacked a grass farmers private plane, filed a bogus flight plan and is heading to Mexico to live a life of luxury. Will meet up with GA there as in Shawshank Redemption.

  15. “i wish i could speak my mind…” Yvenson Bernard.

“Mike Riley finishes 19-19 in three seasons at Nebraska. He went 29-33 in his final five years at OSU. Sometimes the game just passes you by.” Bob Lundeberg of the GT.

Bob better watch his step, truth not popular in some Corvallis precincts! Seems Yve already got that message, too bad. Drops my respect/opinion of YB.

        • Not the way I read it; YB acts like he knows something but hesitates to share. He is part of the AD and may have knowledge of: 1) coaches drinking etc, and/or 2)counterproductive infighting within the AD.

And, to orangejulius, also not how I read it. Lundeberg’s “…sometimes the game just passes you by.” hardly sounds like a fan club line.

  16. From the Scoop, re Bielema being fired as he walked off the field, “You fire a guy walking off the field who disgraced your program.
You don’t do that to a man who did things the right way and for whatever reason it didn’t work out ”

And yet OSU gives the staff till Tuesday to get out, another indicator of the Athletic Depts gum chewer approach.

  17. scares me for wayne tinkles job that ronnie stacy is who he brings in from JUCO and that he’s actually getting minutes…

    2 drives, 2 travels..

  18. Greg Schiano to Tennessee maybe. Didnt someone here want him as our coach? Seems like a complete psycho.
    deadspin.com/report-tennessee-football-gives-up-completely-hauls-g-1820749179/amp

  19. Without saying too much, i can verify that danny’s reports of the staff being fired already are false.
Maybe it will still happen, but it hasnt happened to this point.

    • Why? they’ve been right on a lot of stuff.

They said Sumlin would be fired weeks ago. They said Graham would be fired too. Reported Mullen to Florida before anyone else.

  20. Not sure I can handle two dumpster fires in one weekend. Beavs hoops blows a 13 point first half led and now has powerhouse Marist within two points. When the announcers said that Marist had never defeated a P-12 team, I knew it was the kiss of death.

  21. Cav’s vindication:: A report in this weekend’s WSJ says “Crawling . . . is growing in popularity as an exercise activity. Some fitness types claim that the act of crawling like a baby allows the mind and body to return to healthier exercise patterns learned at an early change. Everyone knows that before children learn to walk, their bodies are lean, mean and supple. . . . . Crawling enthusiasts say that by dropping down onto all fours and prowling around the room like jungle cats, people are hitting the reset button in their central nervous systems, returning to. . . a[n] Eden-like state before pedestrianism went and ruined everything.”

    • What a bunch of hippie-yoga-bullshit…FUCK Cav..he couldn’t even DO a bear crawl. I can imagine him “peeling” out of the parking lot in a mid-90’s Camaro….He and Banker are so far removed from reality as to be delusional…..go enjoy your over-compensated salaries, stay fat, and be quiet.

  22. Ronnie Stacy has been running the point effectively for the last five minutes and now the Beavs are up 13 with six minutes left. I am apparently either dead or asleep.

  23. I’m hearing Kiffin (Monte, not Lane) to the Vols. Looking at a possible Bilema/Pelini duo as co-HC to Oregon State. Ink is dry.

Found this nugget on Twitter… interesting anyway

    • it’s clear that the OSU pattern of late is to get someone on a rebound: Erickson; Riley II, Andersen. One could almost put Riley I in that category since he was rebounding from his career in Canada just prior to taking the SC job. I always liked Bielima at Wisconsin. I remember when they lost here in 2012 he fired an assistant or two. To some that may come across as hard-ass but to me it shows a superiority loyalty to his employer to put the best possible product on the field.

  24. Interesting that Baldwin hasn’t made any public statements about staying with Cal the past two days. Makes me think he’s the choice despite all the recent reports.

  25. Nemec reporting that Beavs commits have not been contacted by anyone from OSU yet. If true, another example of a laid-back, gum chewer approach by this AD.
I don’t care how busy Barnes is, I don’t care that he may have no substantial news; he needs to see that we don’t lose out because of lack of showing concern for the situation these kids are now in.

      • Agreed. However, even Barnes could make a phone call (from a plane if necessary) to counter the sharks which will attempt to poach. If nothing else, Barnes could assure them that they aren’t forgotten and will be getting a call from Hall tomorrow.

    • Wish Barnes and OSU would just finalize on Baldwin and put an end to this. He is a good coach used to working in a smaller market and producing. With a good DC hire really think he is the right guy to take on this challenge.

    • Most of these recruits we’d want to leave. Petras is a keeper…not much else there.
I’m hoping the new coach brings in better recruits.

    • Nemec would love nothing more than to see the beavs do a steeper nose dive. His brief article was intended to turn recruits away from osu..

He’s a duck honk.why else would he overstate the already obvious situation.

I called him out on Twitter for his undying loyalty as a duck honk and he threatened to block me. His agenda is obvious after posting a comment recently after the beavs “making progress” moving from 12 to 11 in recruiting. He’s a slobbering duck fan that probably messed his panties during the civil war.

      • I’m sure he’s a fan of the Ducks and probably biased. But, I’m guessing he’s a bigger fan of himself, and would prefer to have two teams with active recruiting news/gossip to report and tweet.

  26. Adam Jude at Seattle Times says Smith has interviewed. No surprise I suppose by confirmation of the inevitable. By the way, the Twitter responses to Feldman’s note on Tedford are just brutal. someone should send them to Ed Ray

  27. Is Todd Graham someone Barnes should check in with? Graham doesn’t seem to have any geographical preferences. The ASU situation seems weird, the AD came out and said he would like to retain the OC and DC? Does that mean for next season? And Graham will coach the bowl game? Maybe Graham would like to stay in the P-12 and build the Beavs up.

  28. Can you two morons shut up with the “snowflake” and “show me the email” horseshit? It contributes nothing. Bans are on the table moving forward. I can use ignore, but unfortunately as the admin I get an email in my inbox each time you make those moronic and useless comments, and they’re flooding it with nonsense. I want to read good comments, not horseshit.

Get a grip on your teenage emotions and start contributing, or at least be quiet.

        • I think most would agree jax is the true instigator/agitator on this forum. I merely created my profile just due to the fact that over the years I grew tired of his sexist, racist and insulting tone he has displayed for YEARS… pleas ban us both so nobody needs to read pages of TRUMP whining and crappy music video links. If jax and I are banned I feel I have done a service to this board IMO, Bring the ban hammer! Just mind you I’ve been annoying for a few months, where you (Angry) have allowed jax to terrorize your board for YEARS an YEARS with no ban despite multiple requests for him to be banned.

          • This has been your temperament from day one. If you don’t like what you get, stop trying to give it. Because I will stand up to you every damn time.

        • Feelings hurt? I mean you literally call people “pussies, quitters and morons/stupid” on a daily basis over sports, politics or any other topic YOU don’t agree about. Why upset when it is directed at you for a change? Honest question

          • Jack is fine. Saying “terrorize” is a bit dramatic. Just scroll by if you don’t like his posts. I find the screen names created in opposition to Jack to be the most annoying thing in here. Quit whining to angry about it.

          • My feelings are inconsequential.

If you have been called something by me, you deserve it. I will walk it back sometimes, but you deserve no quarter.

          • Your honest question, btw, has nothing to do with anything.

People who quit… stay with me here… are called quitters. Someone who doesn’t understand that would be not smart. There are many common terms for not smart people.

You would have the world believe otherwise for whatever reason. You have yet to direct anything at me. You have been a disgusting person, so I act toward you as you act toward me on a 24/7 basis.

I let you go for how long? Four or five months? Two days of me gving you what you gave me for almost half a year, and your fingers were typing threats you can’t follow through on.

            You’re a not smart person.

          • It’s also interesting that you’re willing to split the baby, but you think you’re standing on high ground. This is what you have been always.

  29. There was a lot of talk about Les Miles a couple of weeks ago and I realize it may have been fantasy. I don’t hear his name in conjunction with any job. Is he left out of the cycle again and if so why?

      • One year? LSU fired him in 2016, right? I guess he doesn’t fall under the “sitting head coach” category. I’m curious as to who the sitting head coaches are that Barnes is speaking with. I really hope he’s not counting Tedford. The more I think about this, the more I think the program needs a proven name, but I’m not confident there is one to be had.

        • What proven name would want this job?
It would have to be someone really damaged, like Briles…
Or someone really old like Erickson.
          Or someone nuts like GA.

          • i guess it boils down to how bad someone wants to coach in 2018, right? At least there’s some decent money that can be spent thanks to GA and his madness. I’m fine with Baldwin if he’s the man, but this is a big undertaking. I’m thinking there will be at least a couple of proven winners left out of the cycle again. It worked once for OSU with DE and I know this is a shittier job now.

          • Jim, wouldn’t this be a buyers market? It doesn’t appear to have more names for jobs than coaches looking/wanting jobs. Universities seem to fire coaches because they have someone else in mind. Oregon state didn’t fire GA midseason, he up and quit even though he knew he was going to get fired at seasons end. It would have been better for GA to have stuck it out and mutually leave after the CW. that didn’t happen, so now we’re in a bigger mess because the job is undesirable it would seem. I wonder if Barnes is forcing the hand of the next coach to take on Hall as part of his staff and build that into the contract?

  30. Anderson’s D had one really good year in 2014. Aside from that it’s been above average, but not great.

Not sure what his reptuation as a recruiter is, but his bio says he’s the team’s liason to the admissions office, which probably means he makes sure they can get the guys they want into school. That has to count for something. Stanford does have a totally different recruiting strategy from OSU, so there isn’t an obvious carry over of connections and skills there. He may be a better fit at Rice in that regard.

He’s a big dude. In all honesty, how many successful coaches are severely overweight? Seems to show a lack of personal discipline to me, which doesn’t send a good message to the organization.

I want to like him based on the Stanford mindset, but I’m leaning towards no.

    • The stats suggest he is best when the offense is doing well at clock control…Which is more faint praise. But I’m sure he’d be an instant upgrade from the current staff.

  31. I think I have fewer reservations about Harsin than just about any of the names that have been floated out there. There’s been little drop off at BSU since he took over, he knows the recruiting region, and he’s a proven winner.

He’s 4-1 against the Pac-12 and 2-0 in bowl games as OC at UT (including embarrassing Banker in the Alamo Bowl).

My only concern is that he doesn’t have experience building up a program from nothing because he’s been a part of winning programs everywhere he’s been. Changing a culture is a specific skill.

Would he leave his alma mater and a position where he’s solidly entrenched?

  32. For those who watched Saturday, how was the overall talent discrepancy between UO and OSU? Granted, OSU’s DBs are in short supply, but in terms of overall D performance, that never seemed to matter this season anyway.

QB and O-line seem like the biggest differences(?).

There’s the obvious coaching distraction for OSU, which I suspect was important factor, even if Hall or others try to downplay it.

The reason I ask about the talent discrepancy is that Taggert in his first season gets 7 wins and a bowl. Curious if he looked like a good/good+ coach or is a salesman some suspect he is and is getting by on existing roster talent. Overall their play looked pretty uneven on the season without the starting QB.

OSU in Andersen’s third season by contrast gets one 3-point win over PSU who finished winless.

Also, does OSU’s current O-Line roster shape up better next year? Isn’t it still lacking a viable center at this point?

    • 1-it’s hard to underplay the contribution of Leavitt
2-for OSU, center is certainly a “position of need”
3-slick willie?….in some ways he’s Cory Hall with a coherent staff (and a huge bag of swoosh goodies).

      • The Leavitt contribution can’t be overstated. The defense looks much more disciplined, evidenced by how they bottled up Kahlil Tate. They’ve always had athletes. Now they know what they’re doing. I’m really hoping the KSU job opens up and the politics resolve to give Leavitt his dream job.

Taggart has said that he’d never been to a situation where he didn’t have a budget. An often overlooked benefit of having infinite resources is that you know you can fix a mistake if you make one. That let’s you go out on more limbs; swing for more fences. Go for bigger risk/bigger reward.

        • Yeah, that’s the thing about UO’s coaching staff. They look great on paper, now. But, unless they fall on their face, then guys like Leavitt, Cristobal, and perhaps even Taggart will be gone in a couple of seasons..

          • Well, we disagree. Given what the D looked like last year compared to this year the improvement to me is obvious. We tend to go easier on the D when the offense is so bad, right? Burmeister was a dumpster fire and the UO defense was mostly in bad straights. What I see is that they have NFL potential at QB and an improving defense.

          • The two points aren’t exclusive. Nikegon’s run D was as bad last year as UCLA’s was this year. Both of them could improve toward the mean and still be well below it. They also had a couple players step up. It wasn’t just Troy Dye against the world this year.

  33. OSU’s defense was impressively balanced in its approach this season, yielding 237.3 YPG passing and 235.8 YPG rushing. Their 43 PPG is 128/130 in the nation.

    https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/oregon-state/2017.html#all_defense_and_fumbles

Where is Andersen hiding out? Wittingham’s spare bedroom? Somebody should call out this epically bad season and publicly lay it at that quitter’s feet. Seems like he’s getting off too easy.

    • Pretty sure angry has called out the paid scribes on twitter.

I’m not too concerned with Andersen getting off easy; it’s the culture of the Athletic Dept which needs to be exposed. IMHO

      • Good point, the AD shouldn’t be absolved from all of this either. It has been, what 2+ months since GA walked away and I get the distinct impression that Barnes is just now trying to rustle up someone to coach this team – we’ve had a tremendous head start on a coaching search and I can’t help but feel like we have squandered a great opportunity.

        • Concerns about the “culture of the athletic dept” go far beyond any slow start to the search for a new FB HC.
If coaches were drinking and chasing co-eds that would be a major fail by the AD; if not, there are still plenty of examples we’ve seen of an operation which appears sloppy and slipshod (or maybe just woefully out of touch).

    • Yeah, where is he?? You just have to know that at some point in the next 3-4 months, maybe even sooner, the whole sordid tale of what was/is this mess will come out. Was it the bottle that got him, the pressure of trying to keep up the appearance of being a Power 5 Conf. HC? Who really knows, but we are going to find out at some point for sure, and it’s going to be good, too. Maybe it will come out by the time Athalon’s publishes their PAC12 annual or SI will run a feature?

      • Not sure of why the negative rating, but the fans and alum of OSU deserve no less then the truth on this whole debacle. We’ve had to survive with plenty of coaching adversity over the years and this, by far, is the worst that I have seen in my 38 years associated with the university. From Avezzano, Kragthorpe, to Pettibone, DE and Riley were the only ones that had brought some semblance of continuity to the program and an attitude that we could compete in the conference. This last 3 years with GA were a nightmare that sank the program lower than I have seen it – the product on the field stank and was unwatchable for much of the season. I feel for the kids, but a lack of coaching had to be responsible for much of it.

    • He’s not worth getting your big boy pants in a wad.

Breathe deeply. Count to ten. Compartmentalize him. Recall him as funny… but funny shake-your-head, not funny ha-ha.

He saw what he did. He left the money. We don’t need to chase him anymore.

  34. Anybody else go to the duke/florida game last night? It was crazy how much better those teams are than our Beavs, and Duke plays mostly freshman this year.
Really entertaining game too. Florida has a pretty well rounded team but needs more size down low.

Alao, QB commit Jake Dukart was shown on the jumbo screen at one point. They were flashing shots of various fans in different team gear amd he had a Beaver shirt/hat on. He stood up proudly with his OSU gear while he was showered with boos from the crowd. Was nice to see he didn’t back down to the booing.

    • How? Nothing has really happened. It’s all rumors. No one on this board has any real insight as to who the coach is going to be and who Barnes is interviewing.

Is it a disaster bc of how they fired the coaches? Who cares, they were gone anyways. Did they need a going away party?

As for the recruits, so they’re in limbo for a week. Other than Petras, other schools don’t seem to be pursuing them. I think there’s only been one decommit? That says a lot about how much interest other schools gave them.

      • He’s just depressed and venting, as always.

I do that sometimes to get out frustration. It feels good, briefly, until you realize you wrote something that doesn’t make sense.

    • Not really. You could say we had a jump on other teams because of GA leaving early but the fact is coaches in good standing arnt going to interview or even speculate about job opening while they are currently coaching other teams. #1 that’s really dumb, #2 some schools don’t allow it via current contracts. #3 it’s OSU, it’s not like were a top 25 school with an opening. So far nothing is really known as fact other then we a searching for a coach.

  35. Maybe it is time for Barnes to walk and for Casey to replace him, with Yeskie taking the reins of the baseball team. I just think Barnes is in over his head, with all that has happened with OSU athletics in the last year. I think Casey would be a stellar AD and will hold people more accountable.

I understand Angry’s position of cleaning house in the football program, but with each passing day I am becoming more concerned we will not be able to find a quality coach. It may come down to retaining Hall as HC until next year which is not exactly the end of the world, so long as we spend good money on quality coordinators. Two that come to mind are Ben McAdoo and Bo Pelini.

    • I would take Baldwin ten times out of ten over Hall.

I think I’d like Harsin most of the names I’m hearing. I bet he’s a real possibility which is why the day after the Mountain West Championship game is the latest we’ll have an official announcement.

      • My original assumption is that these guys would not take the OSU job. I would take Baldwin or Harsin, but I think life is pretty good already for those guys right now.

      • College football is unique because a non-Power 5 coach can be a superstar and still have zero chance to compete for the playoffs, so that is always a motivating factor in these guys taking Power 5 jobs. I just have a hard time imagining Harsin would think the OSU job has that potential. But they all have to take a P-5 job at some point to even get in the game.

      • Didn’t realize how good Harsin’s HC winning percentage is, or that he’d already won a Fiesta Bowl (over Az).

If he’s an actual interview, or candidate after Saturday’s game is complete, I think that would be very positive.

  36. Reading between the lines, is it possible Bloomgren is the guy that’s a “viable candidate?”

We already heard he was under consideration. Then someone else hears about a Stanford coordinator, but one detail gets changed. Then we get told almost immediately that Anderson ISN’T a candidate.

  37. The entire athletic department is suffering from the very, very bad leadership of Barnes. Let me just tell you straight up that since he came on, he has caused more harm than people will ever know. There is absolutely no way that the football program is going to find success while he is in charge. He is the reason why several coaches have been fired unjustly since he arrived, and because of this, the department is having to pay out a lot of unnecessary money and battle civil suits. These coaches, Kevin Roberts, Emily Ford, and Vita Scaglione, were all fired without due process and their rights were violated. Roberts is suing the school on a civil rights case. We have spoken to people who dealt with Barnes when he was AD at Utah State and it was the same story – unprofessional, closed off, etc. This is the same thing that’s went down on our campus since he took over and you wouldn’t believe the black cloud that has come over this place. The best thing we can hope for is that he moves on….seriously.

    • That’s what I sensed and feared, though I have heard there are problem employees in the A.D. as well.
I’m not sure why schools keep hiring Barnes. He’s unlikable and seems incompetent.

      • The bad thing is that the problem employees were people that Andersen brought – Guinta and Yray are the worst of the worst but they are gone – ….Lassiter and Nyborg need to go but they are Barnes’ good ol boys so who knows. Jihad Ali (yes that’s his real name) is Barnes’ whipping boy and puts him up to all kinds of stuff. Some employees have no real reason for being in the positions they are in except they are damn lucky.
Mark Massari’s loss was a big hit. The fact is, he would have made a great AD. Ray botched that one up big time. Things started changing when he left.

        • Curious what makes Yray and Guinta the worst?
Neither really has the authority required to be too problematic, right?
Always pictured them as yes men for GA

        • I thought Barnes was hired to give Andersen somebody he liked: tail, wag dog. Men’s football and basketball are a school’s biggest revenue generating sports, so I think there’s a tendency to be deferential to those coaches. Ed Ray really thought he lucked into a great thing w/Andersen, thought Andersen would get OSU to a Rose bowl, and likely wanted an AD with whom Andersen was comfortable.

      • I’m skeptical of this insider knowledge. It could all be true I suppose, but this could also be a standard case of the old rank and file in the AD not being open to change / different way of doing things. In any organization, when new management is brought in there are always people who think they know better and have a hard time getting on board with the new way. Could be that Barnes needs to do a better job at finding who these people are and getting rid of them.

        • Good question, mckalk.

I’ve always assumed that any troublemakers in the AD office would be hesitant to mess with either of those two because of the performance of their teams and the strong vision they have for their programs. Add to that the way they have connected directly to fans.

Casey, particularly, has done a lot in the fund raising area, and projects a “no BS” image. Seriously, who would want to mess with him?

  38. Is it me or was Dave Aranda, Sitake, and Brent Brennan the only Andersen Asst Coach that came out ahead of not coaching very long under Andersen since he left Wisconsin and quit on OSU? I bet Arranda feels the most relieved by not coming along, although, we may of had a way better defense if he had come along.

  39. We have had 7 weeks to get our shit together an be ready to hire a competent / qualified coach as soon as the season is over. It’s now Monday 11/27 and we are sitting on our thumb while other schools are on the move and getting things done. UCLA fired Mora and had Chip hired within 3 days. This whole process smells on complete incompetency.

  40. The only logical reason to wait is that they know someone playing this weekend will take the job and that could only be Harsin IMO since Tedford is out.

So I am gonna assume its Harsin for my own sanity, welcome to Corvallis

    • Or it could be the db coach at USC for all we know…. I realize there was a lot of tongue and cheek in your comment but I have come to terms that we have to wait for Barnes to mess this up on his own time table….until then I will just stress a little and drink a little more….

    • Norvell is playing this weekend, so there’s still hope there. I’ve read he may have some background baggage though. I hope the search committee has contacted Charlie Strong. He may have a better job at USF in his opinion but I think he could do wonders at OSU (7-5). Or like you said, it could be Harsin. A safe hire on paper but he hasn’t maintained what he inherited at Boise.

      • Harsin has won the MWC 3 out of 4 years. I think he’s maintained things pretty well. If you thought he was going to keep going to BCS bowls every year, you have unrealistic expectations.

He also has more wins over Pac-12 teams than GA did.

        • I guess that depends on how we define maintained. Petersen lost 1 game or less in 5 of his 8 years their. Harsin’s lost 3 games or more in 3 of his 4 seasons.

          • Also just for arguments same….BSU played WSU….. lost although away game and close in OT but their other meaniful out of conference game this year was a blow out at home against Virginia…. worst loss in a long time on the blue turf…. I think he holds some similarities to Baldwin when he was at EWU in that he can grab guys that aren’t quite PAC 12 guys at least a few and run a train on the mtn west although FSU beat them last week we will see how this weekend goes at BSU. Also against our chances go down due to the fact that he is a native of Boise played there plus they are decently well off as far as finances because the Mtn West lets them have a different TV contract than the rest of their conference. All that said he for sure is an upgrade from Anderpants….one last thing rumor here in Idaho was that the Ucks were looking at him last year before going with slick Willie…

    • I don’t know that I’d trust any reports of someone turning down the job, ie. Tedford or accepting the job until it’s reported by OSU. I’d giv Jim Tressell a shout out to see if he’s interested…national champ at tOSU and I think Youngstown State.

    • Could only be Harsin? Did you forget about assistants too? Eggers tweet earlier stated coach. It didn’t say head coach. So it could be anyone coaching on any staff this weekend.

Harsin, Bloomgren (if he hasn’t already interviewed or this is a 2nd interview), Lance Anderson, Norvell, Kiffin or Schiano. I can’t see OSU even touching Kiffin or Schiano. Norvell is rumored to be being courted by Arkansas. IMO, that leaves Harsin, Bloomgren and Lance Anderson. I’d be perfectly happy with Harsin or Bloomgren.

      Edit:

On 2nd thought, I can’t see Harsin leaving his Alma Mater for this dumpster fire. I know Oregon was kicking the tires on him after their very public break up with Helfrich. Idk what level of interest their was from either side. Harsin could very well just be using this as a ruse to get more money out of Boise CC.

  41. TEDFORD , FOR ME, WAS THE ONLY CHIOCE. BUT, NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. COULD DEAL WITH THE ATHLETIC BUDGETS, FACILITIES, AND AN OFFENSIVE MIND–WHICH WINS IN THE PAC-12. DEFENSE NEEDS TO BE FAST AND DECENT, BUT O WINS IN THE PAC-12 NOW..TOO BAD..

    • I like tedford too…he could bring mcmaryion back with him…Jim tressell former Ohio State coach that is currently at Youngstown State (I think).

  42. Are you guys excited if it’s not Baldwin and these other names have legs?

I think I like Harsin more. Not sure. Tressell would be great, but I just don’t see him wanting to deal with this. Doesn’t seem like a west coast guy. Tedford would be fine to get us good QBs and to 7 wins, but he’d then have to be replaced. He’s basically Riley from 2006-2009.

It’s starting to look like it really isn’t Baldwin. Pretty surprising given the sources that reported that. I wonder if something went wrong with the deal at the last minute.

    • Tressel is the president of YSU. Probably not coming back to coach football.

Harsin would be a good hire. Much more proven than Baldwin.

    • I agree that it doesn’t look like Baldwin is the guy. It almost feels like that was floated out there so the actual hire sounds more impressive. I think Harsins résumé is better, with his FBS HC experience, but not sure he can clean up this mess.

    • concur. the longer this takes the less likely it’s Baldwin. If they hire him, I’m fine with it. I’m still holding out hope that in the end there’s some Dennis Erickson like earthquake that says, “wow, look who Oregon State hired.” At this point in OSU’s trajectory the only realistic prospects are up and coming assistants (in the Prothro, Riley I model, yielding Baldwin, Smith) or guys needing to rehab their careers: Erickson and Riley II mode, yielding Les Miles, Rick Neuheisel, Bilema, Graham. What we know has NOT worked, is taking a sitting coach from another program who in effect volunteers to come here because of some mysterious reason.

    • Think Bloomgren or Anderson. Tedford can certainly say he’s not interested. However they do play Boise again this weekend. Tedford and/or Harsin could be trying to leverage more $ out of their current schools.

How do you think Central Florida recruits and players feel after Scott Frost said he’d be heartbroken if Nebraska didn’t want him? That’s not a distraction????

  43. Still want Baldwin. Best fit for OSU and I think his personality is a huge upgrade from Andersen. Could deal with Harsin but just think he is a more expensive Baldwin that gets you the same amount of wins and wouldn’t be as unique of a fit for OSU. Harsin isn’t as likeable from a 1st impression to me. Would rather spend the pricw difference between Baldwin and Harsin on good coordinators. Harsin finished real low in who fans have wantwd through this 7 week process so not sure why Oregon State and Barnes would wany to risk alienating the highest percenrahe of Beaver fans who have been voicing and supporting Baldwin as HC. Do think we will know more in a couple of days.

  44. If your final choice is between Harsin and Baldwin, you take Harsin and you take him without hesitation. More tested at the Power 5 level, and he’s kept Boise State competitive.

  45. Where is the Harsin rumor coming from? An Eggers tweet earlier said OSU could take up to 10 more days to hire a coach. Also saw some beat writer outside of Oregon say Troy Calhoun would be our next coach.

    • That beat writer has zero knowledge and was his best guess. He lost any credibility when he wrote that Jimbo Fisher would leave FSU for Texas A&M and that Nebby would hire Navy’s coach.

I wouldn’t mind Calhoun though. He’s done alright at AFA and seems like a more experienced candidate than some of the other names I’ve heard being thrown out.

      • And, for those who like me know nothing about him,,, his mother lives in Roseberg.

        http://www.nrtoday.com/sports/air-force-football-coach-troy-calhoun-visits-roseburg-the-town/article_9adbdafb-aba1-51a2-910b-c8491c5e6961.html

The 50-year-old Air Force Academy head football coach, accompanied by his daughter, Amelia, is relishing time with family and friends. Calhoun grew up in Roseburg and graduated from Roseburg High School in 1985.

His mother, Joan Leslie, still resides in Roseburg.

“I believe this is the first time in seven years we’ve been back here,” Calhoun said Sunday night. “Just splendid. We’ll see how much we can pack in when it comes to fishing and golf, and seeing friends. It’s unbelievable here (weather-wise), especially in the month of July.”

Calhoun — who was a quarterback at RHS and Air Force — is entering his 11th season with the Falcons. He’s compiled a 77-53 record at Air Force, including nine bowl game appearances.

  46. Let’s face it – no coach in their right mind would come here…

Baldwin said no because he wants the Wazzu job and Barnes is crapping his big boy pants because he can’t find anyone to take the job…

Barnes is running around trying to find someone that is willing to take the job (work for him and Ed) and they are saying no because they know there are going to better offers out there…

Right now, J Smith is our best hope…

  47. I like how Egger’s says he won’t tweet rumors and then another tweet talks about how Barnes is not making a hiring decision until one potential candidate finishes coaching. Just because you won’t name names doesn’t mean it’s not a rumor.

  48. FWIW: Troy Calhoun’s salary is $850K

    My kinda guy!!! :-)

The new deal increases the football coach’s annual salary by $25,000 over his previous deal to $850,000 each year.

    • Pat Casey is actually a strong Roman Catholic. He attends Mass/Church in Omaha every time they make it to the College World Series.

        • No I get that, but had to inform when I could. Makes you think a little differently about the story Moron(Moran) ran during the wake of the college World Series. When I went to the first OSU vs LSU game, the LSU fans afterwards were cussing at me and calling me names in regards to that article as if one person defines the university and its fans.

      • Yup, apparently that school is run by one family of donors. And they are the ones that gave the green light for Schiano. Dont remember there names from the articles i read yesterday, but some of their local media has distain for them. It’s almost a uncle Phil scenario, except they don’t have a sports back ground and seem to fuck shit up more often than not.

          • That’s it. On one hand it would be nice to have one super rich guy giving money to the school just because. On the other hand it ends up with some narcissist holding donations over the head of the school and dictating things they have no business dictating.

          • Why do you think hole had to settle for fortune cookie?

No successful coach wants a team owner breathing down his neck trying to make team decisions. Hence the reason CK isn’t back at hole right now.

Also on cue, was perusing the idiot fest that is the O-live comment section and like clockwork hole fan suddenly doesn’t think Chip Is a good coach any more and they couldn’t be happier to have their seventh choice as their coach.

  49. Why did Gary Andersen really quit? Let’s avoid the scandal theory for a minute. What did he notice within the athletic department and OSU administration that made him abandon ship mid season? How does a “no quit” attitude, strong minded coach quit suddenly? Who honestly walks away from $12 million? What if he finally saw what many Beaver fans have been questioning for years? A lack of total commitment to winning football games.

    • Something was building up very early in the season and he must have realized there was no fix for it. Otherwise, I though it was odd that he quit after losing games they were going to lose anyway.

    • I think GA was highly confident this team was good, to the point he cracked a joke like why the hell he’d be an underdog vs Colorado state. He couldn’t comprehend why it wasn’t working “it’s worked everywhere else I’ve been” and it drove him off the deep end.

    • Because he realized he couldn’t get it don and probably has a bi-polar disorder?

He’s left everywhere he’s been before honoring his contracts hasn’t he? I read that after year one at Wisconsin he interviewed for the Cleveland Browns job. He didn’t take that obviously, just turned the Beavers into the Browns…

I actually don’t think the guy can help himself with his drastic decision changes. .

      • I think a mild form of some disorder causes him to be impulsive. Frankly most of these coaches are probably on the edge. He just crossed over.

The big question is does OSU make these coaches bat shit crazy, or does it draw bat shit crazy coaches? Look at Riley, he is completely delusional at this point. And if you believe columnists, Erickson wants to shuffle out on his walker to lead the team. WTF?

        • I think OSU is like the child molested girl who is so mentally defeated and broken that anyone can get with her by just showing the faintest attention. No offense to child molested girls.

  50. The 3 coaches I see that it could be that are coaching this weekend are: Harsin, Lame kiffin, and Mike Norvell.

    According to this article: https://247sports.com/college/memphis/Bolt/University-of-Memphis-and-Mike-Norvell-working-on-contract-extension-111078851

Norvell was rumored for the SEC openings, but his name hasn’t come up yet for them as a candidate, nor has he signed a contract extension with pay increase from 1.86 million to 2021(a 5.58 million $ buyout?) plus his assistants staff get over $2 million combined. This would move him to similar pay and in a power 5 conference and is a really good coach. Sounds plausible after reading this article too: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.commercialappeal.com/amp/315615001

      • Why?

I myself thought Benton did a 180 on slavery. So I’d like to know what research was cited that suggested Ray write that he never did redeem himself. Still, I think he’s right to honor the county and not have that honor muddled.

The point about the Benton Annex is also correct. It’s an opportunity to name it, period.

Sorry, but Avery was scum, even for the times in which he lived.

I now want to know when we can rename Snell a pile of rubble.

        • I could back Ray on Benton if he made an economic argument against him. Benton was like a dull stick at a gunfight when it came to monetary policy.

          • Dr. Rays explanation of the Benton thing emphasizes that Benton supported kicking Native Americans off of the land they occupied as settlers moved west.

          • It was a shitty thing to do in that regard. But that was more a product of the time. It’s not like he did to them what Columbus did to the Arawak. You might as well not name anything after any POTUS ever for all the broken treaties littering our history.

  51. Heard we’ve been talking to one sitting major conference head coach, and thought that might be Matt Campbell at Iowa state. But he signed a new 6 year $22.5 mil contract yesterday.

  52. Uck fan told me that willie taggarts dream job is Florida State. Says if Jimbo fisher goes to Tex a&m then Willie will go begging for the FSU job

    • I almost didn’t read it because of the site itself, but it’s a decent premise.

But I think he cherry picks. There are as many middling programs that right themselves as there are who fail. And it’s as BG said, there were valid reasons for many of these people to be fired. So he seems to be directing his bias to suggest fan discontent is the only factor in the dismissals he cherry picks.

He fails to understand that college football has become a high dollar business. And this is how those businesses work. The perception of them trends this way and that, and that dictates how successfully they can raise revenues enough to pay increasing wage demands from coaches who sell their wares. If these schools don’t break through to the highest level at least once in a blue moon, quibbling between being mediocre or average to worse just doesn’t do them any good.

I do agree with the last part in that going out to find someone with “energy” is the wrong thing to do. If a program needs an outside influence to help them make changes within said program, that program is dysfunctional. What needs to be done is to find a steady stream of coaches who, win or lose, agree with and properly implement a unified identity as directed by the school.

      • So I would rewrite the article to concentrate on how many programs found success by implementing sound infrastructures, while others didn’t. I would actually think his premise for firing good to great coaches is an outlier that does, in fact, backfire. I would also use Dick Tomey, not Glen Mason.

        • And this from Chip Kelly; the three things FB is about.

“I believe football is about three things: it’s about relationships, friendships and championships,” Kelly said. “You have good relationships by being honest and open in your communication, you have to be confident in what you can do, because education is about the transportation of knowledge. Through that relationship, trust is built, and high-trusting teams are the teams that win. When your team trusts each other and they go out there and lay it on the line for each other because they know everybody to the right and to the left of them gets what it’s all about, and I have great faith in that personally.”

And…….how does “we call him Will around here” fit in to all this talk about honesty?

Seriously though, that part about trust in the final sentence is on the mark.

      • “…a unified identity as directed by the school”

Yes. So the bottom line question is, what is the identity of the Beavs FB team? Who is setting it?

It’s a bit more complex than statements about opponents needing to bring their “A game”.

EDIT: BTW, isn’t the identity of Baseball and WBB easier to, well, identify? Coincidence that they are winners?

        • I would argue that those programs recognize the identity of the school and adopt it. What Ray says about sports should be listened to, embarrassing or not. That’s the identity we want.

The AD is the one who needs t implement it on a daily basis. And s/he will hire coaches like those you mention in order to implement it within each respective sport on a daily basis.

I thought the earlier discussion about just hiring people from GF seems to do the job. I think this idea speaks directly to that.

I find it interesting that college football coaches will seek out advice from their peers in the Xs and Os, but ADs don’t seem to do the same. Maybe they do? If I were an AD, I would visit places like George Fox and Linfield or fly to places like NDSU or Mount Union to see what these schools do to implement consistent quality almost seamlessly over generations.

  53. Is George Fox anywhere near Salem?

I’m asking because I see that charter is returning to Oregon on Wednesday but instead of landing in Corvallis it’s destination is Salem.

  54. The A.D. is a mess right now and it shows – Barnes has screwed up his first opportunity to make an impact at OR State and has fallen flat on his face…

    • Wait… if it shows, why are all your posts trying to convince us of something we don’t know by suggesting cryptic things, never following up and then saying it shows?

  55. What I like about Erickson is he always regretted leaving this job, so he’d have some incentive to get that albatross of regret off his neck. He’d get us to 7 or 8 wins faster than most of the guys mentioned. So for those reasons, I’m in, even though he’s not a long-term answer. Get us to 7 wins, make the job respectable, then hire a guy with more upside. He actually wants the job unlike most of these candidates who just want a pay check.

I’m terrified of Hoke, Banker, Riley all getting involved. That terror makes Erickson look like Urban Meyer.

    • Bring in DC Trent Bray, with special defensive advisor Craig Bray?
Not sure what Nebraska plans to do with Trent after their new staff is assembled, but seems like a good time to poach him back.

    • The fact that he actually wants to be here has to be a selling point. Seems like most candidates would prefer anywhere else, unless this is the last job available.
And to the people who say he’s only been a .500 coach since he left OSU……..so? I’d gladly take a .500 record at this point. Would be a step in the right direction, to build on.

    • He has consistently said he regrets leaving over a long period. So I suppose we should think he’s sincere.

The academic support for all students has wildly increased since his tenure. So maybe my perceived knock on him would also be mitigated.

But I would want Heyward and Breckterfield on the D staff.

        • Obviously.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t over a long period. Nor was it consistent.

DE says it all the time. It’s almost a byline for him, anymore. It doesn’t matter if we’re looking for a coach or not. They’ll interview him for some HS game, and he’ll just casually drop his regret into the conversation.

        • I’ll throw this out there.

I was severely disappointed when we re-hired Riley.

I thought we would go with Hawkins… you know… the coach from Willamette.

  56. Erickson’s first tenure was the reason we were able to start the raising Reser project. Maybe he can come help us finish it, 20 years later……….

Ugh…..has it already almost been 20 years?

  57. Absolutely not on hiring Erickson. If he’s hired, it’s a package deal with a head coach in waiting. Erickson gets what 3 years and then the new guy gets 4? 7 years total? That’s too long of a commitment.

Other reasons, can he even still coach? Is he even lucid?

If you’re going to bring in a figurehead, it might as well be miles. He’d still get out and recruit.

Time to stop with bringing alums back home. Could use someone who wants to use osu as a stepping stone. At least it’ll get the program back into the winning side.

    • I agree. Recognize that any coach that sticks around OSU is going to be mediocre. So, accept that it is a stepping stone job and hope for the waves of excitement that will come about once a decade with a climbing coach who will be gone after a few seasons. DE wasn’t in the climber mode, but that one season was more exciting than all the Sun Bowls and 4+ loss seasons combined afterwards.

    • What? You wouldn’t give Smith a 4 year deal beyond Erickson, that isn’t how coach in waiting things work, it’s be a handshake agreement that might involve giving him 1 year beyond Erickson with a buyout if you change your mind. It’d maybe be a 4 year commitment

  58. Anybody remember the coaching search shitshow that Oregon did after firing Ernesto? Pat Kilkenny jetting about the country for 39 days getting turned down by one coach after another.
    How did that turn out?
    So you say there’s hope?

  59. I’m not sure why people are saying no coach would want this job. Barnes has a bucket of money to offer, fantastic location in a real college town, low expectations from the fan base (6 wins is a major improvement), competing on the national level, and if you fail here, the media blamed jt on the lack of an airport which we sctuslly have! You can leave OSU with a mediocre record and other schools will think you overachieved!

    • If DE likes Luton then no DE.
I am positive he can make Luton better, but better won’t cut it when the starting point is low IQ and awful passer.

      • It’s perfect, if Luton comes back he plays next year while Petras and Dukart red shirt getting ready for a run at year 2. We really cant get any worst then we are now, portland state doesnt count as a win. Lutons gone Petras and Dukart battle for the starting position after a year of tutelage, we’re off to the races.

        • Luton had difficulty throwing to RBs on swing patterns….I’m not convinced he’s even a FBS QB, but then again, I’m not convinced OSU is an FBS football program at this point.

          • Luton didn’t have any problems hitting RBs. His problems were indecision on his reads and throwing late over the middle, relying too much on his arm to correct the timing.

He also had TEs and slots who couldn’t hold the ball.

He also had an OC who called plays that percentages tell us would put any O behind the chains a majority of most games.

      • Hard to imagine DE picking anyone else but the best guy. I remember when he put Smith in the game vs Washington in the 3rd quarter. JS threw for 400 yards or so and almost won the game. We never looked back.

I realize I thought the same thing about GA so there you go.

      • I’m right there with you. Luton didn’t do shit before he was injured and to think the staff thought he was better than McMaryion…..I’m no expert on QBs, but the eyeball test certainly doesn’t lie. And, MM steps into the FSU situation two weeks before the season starts and as a starter is 8-1 with nearly 2,200 yards passing, completion % of 63.8 and 14 TDs and only 3 picks….that decision was on GA and whomever else on the staff thought JL was better. They pissed a season away and MM still has one more year of eligibility. I’d love to see Tedford change his mind and bring MM back to OSU (pipe dream but…)

        • Luton did fine. He was just asked to do more than he was capable by an OC who sucks sweaty balls. It would not have been different with another mediocre QB. He also would have been asked to do way too much and failed.

  60. Not really all that newsworthy, but McGiven and coach Chad are the only coaches so far to update their twitter bios ti show they are not current OSU staffers.
Just sharing in case there was any doubt the McG might be returning.

  61. Perhaps the private jet is going to Salem because it’s bringing the new HC and “they” don’t want prying eyes to get a scoop on who it is?

    • I’m hoping that’s the case because I’m not real wild about DE getting the job. Back in 1999 those 2 championship rings were still like new and they opened doors. OSU received consideration from kids who would normally not even think about giving OSU a shot. Those rings are now about 25 years old, older than the kids he’d be recruiting, and the glamor of the name Erickson has faded.

He’s 70 years old and, imo, that’s too old to be a head coach, especially of a program that is going to require a lot of energy. This is the kind of a situation that could end up killing somebody his age.

      jmo

      • C’mon….He’s 70, not 105. And as far as I know he’s never had serious health issues. Plenty of 70 year old’s have plenty of energy.

        • Trump is 71 and has plenty, and that’s a more important job than football coach. Oh god, what did I do…cue jack with nonsense about “idiot boy 2.0”

        • Bill Snyder is 78. We’re only talking about DE in the short term anyway.
The main reason I like him is if this whole thing comes down to Baldwin vs Smith, I’d much rather take Smith with DE and the backing of several OSU greats vs taking a chance on Baldwin and several EWU assistants. It’s no offense to Baldwin, but I just think Smith/Erickson is the safer bet from pretty much every angle.

This doesnt mean I’m 100% opposed to everybody else, as we dont even really know any of the other true candidates besides Hall(whose ship has sailed)

Yvenson Bernard had several good arguments for the DE/Smith/OSU Allstars option on one of the dam podcast episodes. I really think it would help create more buzz for the program than anybody else we’re currently hearing about.

  62. I think the real story is that they are waiting until after the games this weekend to try to make a deal with a sitting head coach. That is why we’re waiting so long to make a hire. There’s no reason not to already have hired Smith (w/ Erickson) or Baldwin if that was the direction they wanted to go.

It has to be a head coach they’re waiting to speak to. They wouldn’t be waiting to speak to coordinators. They would have already contacted all the coordinators they wanted to speak to like they contacted Smith/Baldwin during the season since there’s no prohibition on speaking with coordinators during the season.

Since Tedford has come out and said he’s not interested I think it has got to be Harsin. There’s an increasing amount of smoke there.

I’m not sure that the Smith/Erickson thing is a trial balloon from the AD. The AD has been a tight ship so far. The leaks have almost all seemingly come from the candidate side unless they were leaks in response to those outside leaks. So I bet it’s more that Canzano wants to be involved and is doing his old friends a solid.

Remember, the Harsin smoke started with a local guy in Boise, which fits with the leaks seeming to mostly be from candidates, not from the AD.

Also, Eggers seems to think that Smith would be the head coach, not Erickson. I don’t think the Canzano situation is really viable. Erickson might be on the staff and an assistant head coach though.

I think there must be strong mutual interst with OSU and Harsin… I’m actually at the point where I think that is their #1 choice and it’s likely to happen.

Might be time for a new thread… If there is one I’ll repost this there :P

    • I was told that Barnes was in TN today and I don’t know if that was to interview Hoke or maybe talk with Norvell at Memphis. I think there’s a surprise in the waiting that nobody will see coming….and I don’t think it’s Harsin or DE/JS……

      • Probably just consoling with UT. “Where the fuck are we going to be find a coach??”

Tennessee’s coaching search issues are significantly more surprising than OSU’s.

        • The rumor part of it.

It’s interesting when lurking on other blogs, there are always certain voices that say the exact same things that are said here… almost verbatim.

Everything will be cruising along, and then some dude out of nowhere starts to complain that this coaching search is a shit show, and why would any coach want to come here and blah blah blah.

And then the moods of regular contributors start going dim and complaining about how the AD needs to be fired or something on the road to that end.

          Fascinating stuff.

      • Norvell is one of only other candidates I am comfortable with besides Baldwin. Like Miles also but still consider him unlikely. Norvell is a popular name but hasn’t been the #1 target of many schools at this point. Seems sub 20% but I don’t rule out the chance and he would be a ‘get’ and offers favorable risk/reward. Oregon Stae would be set up well recruit wise with him and would be a relevant program in the Pac-12.

Baldwin supposedly has known Jimmy Lake for years and that would also be a very capable pairing on both sides of the ball that could recruit well to today’s generation. Like a upswing Norvell staff this one filled out under Baldwin/Lake would positon Oregon State well for quite a few years.

  63. No way let’s keep this thread till it breaks or we get a head coach! I think they are going after Harsin and Erickson/Smith is the backup plan. I’m the point where they just need to make a descent hire soon.

  64. Again, no one here knows where Barnes is and who he’s interviewed. Just chasing rabbits deep down into their holes. Very deep if people think hoke is a viable candidate.

    • We don’t think he’s viable, but we fear Barnes might be dumb enough to hire him. At least that’s what I fear; I don’t want to speak for all. I just really don’t like Barnes, and Ed Ray is quickly moving up my list.

      • There’s just something about the way Barnes showed up and spoke of GA during the Hall transition, and then hearing all of the rumors, only rumors they may be, just really creeps me out. Then the Baldwin snafu. Then the weird zero-dark-thirty approach to how they portrayed firing all the assistants and the secrecy around the coaching search and how they are managing the message (or not) in the media. Just the fact that it’s possible that they wasted anytime interviewing Brady Hoke.

I looked him up and it says he did a lot with fundraising/finances at Pitt, but mostly shitty personnel decision. Great. Perfect.

So I don’t get a great vibe, although the sample size is still small. I don’t like that he’s so closely associated to GA. Yuck. Want as much of that dudes energy scrubbed from the place asap (literally).

        • Live by the scuttlebutt, die by the scuttlebutt.

Get all angsty about said scuttlebutt, and paste it all over a blog… not exactly priceless.

        • I don’t think it can be mentioned enough that Barnes originally said he was going to be consulting with GA about his replacement. Let that sink in for a minute. Interestingly and probably rightly so (unless Barnes is completely tone deaf) that has not been brought up by Barnes again. Maybe this guy has a small sliver of common sense.

          • I don’t remember him being the one who said he would do it.

I just took it for granted that what was stated here was what occurred.

I’ve since learned you all are easy and act like you’re giving birth to brambles when someone on the twitter rumors some dumb idea.

          • I’m pretty sure it was in a quote in the paper, so not sure why you feel the need to take a pot shot. I suppose you’re perfect and above the fray. Almost 100% of the folks here are good people, just go with it.

          • Yup.

Good people besmirch strangers’ character and/or intelligence based on rumors by some third or fourth party. That’s what makes them good.

I’d be willing to bet the Hoke rumor started with that fuckstick, Canzano.

And then I have to read miserable, insulting bitch and whines about something so ridiculous started by someone so ridiculous that it’s ridiculous.

          • Meanwhile, my preferred narrative follows FlightAware and just lazily suggests this or that here and there.

Calling our school crap and stupid and dishonorable just isn’t my thing.

            Sue me.

  65. I think Brady Hoke would be a terrible decision. Truly baffling. I think that it won’t happen however and it’s just latent pessimism exerting itself.

    Trust the process? :P

  66. Forgive me if this has already been mentioned but Mississippi State hired Joe Moorehead, a name discussed on here, within 48 hours of Mullens leaving for Florida. No search firm needed. Barnes knew 2 weeks in advance that GA may be quitting but still needed a search firm and still doesn’t have a guy 7 weeks later?

    • Moorehead is a coordinator with only a bowl game left and we’re supposedly waiting on a guy coaching in a championship game. If he really is the top target (and that could only be Harsin or Norvell), then those are better options than the realistic ones that would be ready to go now.

I’d say Moorhead is a huge gamble for MSU. He has a solid football track record, but he has no southern ties at all and he has to recruit against the rest of the SEC in SEC country (and Starkville isn’t somewhere he’s going to be luring Midwest/NE kids to).

      • Nick Saban. At LSU. See above. Yankees do fine if they are good coaches. He is a very good coach and can put on tapes of Barkley. Home run hire.

        • I can’t think of any examples outside of Saban and Miles, both at LSU. Recruiting at LSU isn’t really like recruiting to Starkville. Not sure where you’re getting it from, but Moorhead was never at Vandy. He was HC at Fordham while Franklin was at Vandy.

But props to MSU for knowing what they want and jumping on it quickly. I don’t get the sense Barnes is acting with the same decisiveness.

          • Why would he?

We have large swaths of boosters who think Niner or Beauner would be decent hires.

Why would we start off looking at someone who has actually done something?

        • I lived on the MS gulf coast for three years. There are so many good players in that area that recruiting will not be an issue. That damn yankee Urban did OK.

  67. The other aspect about the hiring process is how coaches perceive and view our AD.
It might influence who would even consider the job. We ran into that here at Minn. when our idiot AD.
fired Glen Mason, who had been president of the CFB association. He rightfully badmouthed him.
It was no secret that coaches steered clear of the job because Maturi. I wonder how Barnes is thought of among the coaching profession?

  68. You gotta admit, this is fun shit to speculate about head coaches. Gives a splash of “juice” to the board. I sort of think we are going to be doing it again in about two plus years with MBB.

  69. Fun stuff at football scoop. The silly season could get really silly after Saturday.

I expect Fisher to take the A&M job. FSU is reportedly prepping for it by looking into coaches like Taggert. And Oregon is prepping in case Taggert leaves.

Just silly that the opening at A&M would cause the Oregon job to open up too.

  70. I’m pretty impressed that so much time has passed with so much speculation and there is no real information coming out of the AD. That’s a pretty tight ship. Of course it could be that they’re all running around over there, generating entropy and producing nothing useful. Or maybe they’ve gotten passed plans A, B and C and are somewhere like Q. We’ll soon find out.

    • It might be a case where they don’t want to admit how many times they’ve been turned down. It’s easy to not say much when you’ve got egg on your face.

I won’t be surprised if we hear about an overnight shipment of knee pads being sent to the athletic department, necessitated by Barnes being down on his knees begging coaches to take the job and thus having worn out the pair he had.

      • Nobody wants to tell the incoming guy that he was the fifth choice. They know the game, and negotiations are fluid. Some of these guys are getting hits from multiple programs. So to get one within reach is all that’s necessary to make a deal.

Sometimes that guy isn’t really the fifth try. He’s just the first within an acceptable final pool to make the deal.

  71. There is speculation out there that Erickson approached OSU with a plan and I’ve read here that a Smith / Erickson dual could be in play. I’d be happy with that although why wouldn’t that have already been announced? Smith is approachable at this point correct? Maybe asking Erickson to be sober for a couple days? Maybe Barnes & company are just hiding out at a private ranch in Nevada and already have a deal with someone? Maybe I’m sick and tired of waiting while wondering if we will have more then a day to lock in new recruits? Maybe…

  72. Another reason I’m not wild about an Erickson/Smith combo is that in the business world it seems all too often the heir apparent falls flat on their face when they actually get control of the company. Being in the co-pilot seat is not the same as flying the plane.

Personally, I’d like to see Smith get a few years experience as a HC before even being considered for the OSU job.

    jmo

  73. I was thinking about the Smith/Erickson idea. If they went that route and Erickson was the head coach I am not so sure I’d want Smith to be OC. I think it would make more sense for Smith to be AHC and coach QBs so he has more time to focus on the AHC role and doing the things he’d be doing as a HC instead of game planning every week.

If course he’d still be involved in game planning but making the AHC is primary role just seems like a better way to prep him for the HC job.

My guess is he would be OC if this deal happened but just thinking out loud.

    Thoughts?

  74. Maybe I missed it with all the going this way and that but can someone shed light why the Toledo coach isn’t getting interest from OSU or anyone else?….. his old coach is doing pretty well at I SU I believe is where he went and from what I have read he is a solid recruiter….and has carried on and has his team in conference championship…. worst loss this year was to Miami but heck lots of teams can say that. What am I missing that is holding this guy back from being the next up and comer?

  75. Kinda fun to see that all of the torture that Beaver fans have been going through waiting for a new coach might also spread to our friends at the Hole.

    http://footballscoop.com/news/willie-taggart-now-centerpiece-entire-coaching-carousel/

Any thoughts who might want to coach at UO if Willie leaves?

I think they should interview these stellar candidates:

Gary Andersen (knows the state and is a great recruiter – looks good in Nike brand big boy pants)
Brady Hoke (knows the program, looks good in green)
Mike Riley (knows the Pac-12 and state of Oregon, likes to ride his bike to work)

    • That would be okay/interesting if DE came on as AHC/OC in a mentor role. Then the rest of the staff is great recruiters. I’d be a bit worried about a power struggle, but DE seems to willing to embrace mentoring someone.

      • Yeah, DE as a steadying force would be helpful.

I thought Smith should be in the candidate pool, but think that Harsin or Norvell would be preferred if one or both were indeed options.

Will be interesting to see what kind of staff Smith puts together and how his personality type plays out with all of the HC responsibilities.

    • Hmmm. P5 job is usually not a starter HC job. If true, this could be a spectacular failure for the school and him. At least he really knows what he is getting into. Better hit some HR’s with the staff hires.

    • Very happy. We have one of our “own” coming back….this is what I hated about GA and his band of cronies is that they were outsiders and couldn’t have given a sh*t about our school or our town because they had no emotional investment into it. I’d be willing to give Smith much more leeway into righting the ship than GA….after what Riley and GA have done to this team it’s going to take awhile to get things in order. I’m hoping JS brings back some former players into position roles.

I’ve been thinking about Cory Hall and his future as well. Do we need to clean house and rid the dept. of anything tied to GA?

I learned today that Guinta is still on staff. This is an incredibly bad move by Barnes.

      • Doubt Guinta will be here much longer with new staff coming in. At least we won’t have to hear any more about “big boy pants” with Smith.

  76. I’m actually worried if hole has to choose a new coach. I thought we lucked out with them taking Taggart because he’s not that great. The good news is that he was tearing it up with recruiting….he might steal many of those kids if he leaves.
