General Thread / Recruiting

Time for a new thread.

We can stay general and open discussion, but with recruiting heating up that seems like a good topic, too. QB situation seems to be on peoples’ mind, and for good reason. None of the players in the mix are P5 players. The fact we can’t hand a highly rated guy the starting job as a freshman is concerning.

I still laugh when Tim Euhus and others on Twitter wrote “Is this really a big deal?” when Petras committed to Iowa. Um, yes. Could be the difference between a 4 year run and 4 years in the basement.

  1. I’ll go away from recruiting on this one and ask, why isn’t Luke Heimlich on any of the college baseball pre-season all american lists? Aside from the obvious reason, wouldn’t his body of work from last year immediately qualify him as one of the top pitchers in the game this year?
I see Nick Madrigal is a 1st team guy, but I would argue Heimlich was the more valuable player last year.

      • If we thought that story was a distraction in the playoffs last year, I would guess it will be much more under the microscope this year after fans/media have had a year to process it. You know it’s going to be mentioned by the media as frequently as possible because it will draw site traffic. Opposing fanbases are going to make things ugly. If OSU has any amount of success this year, thay will always be the “*” attached to the upcoming season.

        • I think the story has mostly blown over. The team will have to address it at the start of the season. If they do that right, they can move on without the media hounding them all year.

I don’t think opposing fans outside of the one asshole will bring it up. I recall talking to a duck alum friend of mine. Huge duck fan, I can’t be in the room with him during any civil war events. He thought Heimlich was treated very unfairly. His reasoning being that Luke was convicted, completed a diversion program and had to registered as a sex offender. Did the things that he was ordered to do. He had not gotten into any trouble since so it seemed very unfair that it was brought up right before the postseason. So I don’t see many opposing fans treating him badly. People have shorter memories now days.

It’ll be interesting to see how the home crowd reacts to him. I can’t cheer for him. If I knew his status when he was recruited, there’s no way he’s coming to Corvallis.

Heimlich is also off all draft boards. Teams just don’t know what to do with him.

          • If Heimlich was one of the nations best at Math, nobody cares including Canzano or the family member (ex-family member) that contacted the media.

Meanwhile ESPN gives the LaVar Ball 10x more airtime than the disgrace happening at Michigan State.

          • First, good to hear about your uck friend; his reasoning seems logical to me given what we know. Sadly, I really doubt many fans and for sure many writers, will be so generous/logical.
I believe there has never (and likely will never) been a public detailed account of the actual “crime”.

Certainly “The team will have to address it at the start of the season. “ Ignoring it isn’t really an option because then it comes up repeatedly and at unpredictable times. Seems to me the question then is just what is the best way to address it? I’d like to know what others think is the right way

“If they do that right, they can move on without the media hounding them all year.” Well, yes, “all year” and “hounding” are good terms. No matter what, it’s hard for me to expect that it will not be mentioned, at least occasionally (salaciousness sells).

The statement I remember Luke making allows me to cheer for him……I think.

          • Heimlich was not convicted of anything; he was adjudicated as a juvenile offender. Only those who can’t discern the difference between juvenile law and adult jurisprudence fail to to see the distinction

      • Again: Heimlich was never convicted of a crime; he is not an ex-felon; when he applied for school and saw the question “have you ever been convicted of a felony?” then current federal department of education guidance would have been to answer NO. The whole point of juvenile adjudication is to give juveniles a second chance. OSU was weak, and caved to the mob mentality that the Oregonian whipped up around this issue. I happen to know that if this “Heimlich is a criminal” stuff breaks out again there will be a more forceful response contradicting it.

        • OSU wasn’t weak or caving to anything. Luke stepping away from the team was the right thing to do given the circumstances. The legal ramifications could have been horrible had Casey and the team all had to speak publicly about this in such a short and emotionally charged time frame.

Now that they have had time to confer and move forward, OSU should write a definitive statement that everyone can point to when asked about it. I think it’s proper for nobody to comment on a juvenile adjudication without a judge allowing it first.

          • Jack: at the risk of precipitating a torrent of scorn from you, I disagree. The University had to have had several days to formulate a response once they knew the Oregonian was on Heimlich’s case. There was ample to time to study federal guidelines and relevant social science in order to develop, at a minimum, an answer to why Heimlich had been admitted when he had this history. They were un-prepared. They went into hunker down mode, and left all the burden of coping with the public relations of this to Heimlich. For better or worse, in the modern era it is well established convention that colleges have a duty to protect their students and in this case they failed.

          • How was Luke not protected? What can OSU say about his adjudication that they didn’t say? What can Luke say about it while still abiding by his probation or conditions of his status? What if everyone was caught up in the moment and it came out that he told people he didn’t do anything, but the lousy judicial system extorted a plea out of him?

And that’s not even addressing how they’re supposed to protect the rest of the team from the situation, given the timing.

    • I don’t know what Casey needs to say that he hasn’t already? He and the university clearly stated that Heimlich would be allowed back for his senior season months ago, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to the media. That being said, I’m sure some outlets will try to rehash what they think they know and sensationalize it again and Canzano will come up with another “moral compass” editorial. As many have said, Heimlich is serving another sentence by being blacklisted by baseball, this season may be his last hurrah and one chance to win a national championship. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

      • Dolphin boy can go pimp a teenage girl again for all I care… or at least continue to enable it for years while screeching about rape here and there.

But you’re right. Casey and the school already made their peace with it. If others can’t do that for themselves, they can be introduced to the blank stare.

        • The university has a second bite of the apple at this question after their miserable failure last June. Casey needs to be allowed to follow his natural instincts to defend a player, which my instincts tell me was vitiated last year by higher ups. The HR department needs to study applicable federal law and social science guidance and offer a vigorous defense of not only Heimlich’s right to be a college baseball player, but ultimately to have a professional career in baseball or any other field without a juvenile offense dogging him the rest of his life.

          • The timing in the spring mandated Luke step away from the team in order to not be a distraction. Making it all about him would have erased a great year for that team. Getting in fights with people willfully ignorant of the situation also takes a lot more energy and unnecessarily burns bridges.

Now that they and the public have had time to digest it, they can move forward with a unified voice, and that will be more of a defense of the kid’s present character than anything. This will be a case of actions speaking louder than words. If the team responds with a chip on their shoulder and OSU’s official statement on the matter is all anyone refers to as an answer, those actions will tell people that there’s something more behind their quiet loyalty to Luke.

          • Frankly, I’ve become more disturbed over time that the Groanian outed a 12 year-old survivor then had Dolphin boy come out with his morally bankrupt slanders and conflation of this with campus rape.

I don’t know how anyone, let alone OSU personnel, talks to that turd without knowing that he’ll lie about them or their organization with his bald face. He can’t even be honest with himself. Who gives that kind of person the time of day?

          • Well said.

That second bite takes on amplified importance when one stops to realize that “… those who can’t discern the difference between juvenile law and adult jurisprudence …” includes, I believe, a majority of those who follow or participate in NCAA baseball.
I hope the “more forceful response” you mention is polished and ready, it will be needed!

      • I’m not a lawyer but I understand there’s a difference between a ‘conviction’ and what happened to Heimlich. I imagine his lawyer has sent out cease and desist orders to the Oregonian, Oregon Live and maybe even other media companies that would make them think twice about how they ‘report’ on it.

It’s shameful how he was treated by the media. And in support of Angry’s point in another thread, I can’t tolerate Brenda Tracy anymore due to her response on the matter. She said it was “painful and hurtful” when she found out and the article said she had a meeting with Ed Ray to discuss the issue. I would call her a narcissist for believing she’s entitled to be briefed on the situation, but I was more upset that OSU entertains her opinion.

        • Tracy is now making Luke about her? Yeah that’s why I’ve changed completely in my view of her. She wants to remain a lifelong victim to get attention on social media.

  2. And for the recruiting people, Shurod Thompson won’t be a Beaver this year. Apparantly he has only has 1 year of college under his belt and would be available next summer, and Oregon State plans to see how he plays this coming season before deciding to if they will offer him as a 3 to play 3 guy.

  3. I think that Johnathan Smith wants to go with a duel threat Quarterback. While I don’t think they ran Petras off, I don’t think they oversold their desire to keep him either. I just remember that Smith went and talked with Jake Dukart before he went to talk to Petras. I thought that was interesting. Hopefully this does not end up like the Andersen experiment where they discard strong Pro Style guys to settle for a bunch of 2nd string run option QB’s. I seem to remember an interview with Lindgren where he also emphasized that point. Hopefully, Smith has a plan and the right Quarterback in line to get OSU back on track sooner than later. Go Beavs!

  4. New dam podcast tonight. Shorter than usual, which I actually liked better. Wasn’t super informative but gave a quick 30’000′ ft level overview of where we stand with recruiting, for those who dont follow that stuff closely.
They talk about the new staff and it’s mostly just an overly optimistic view of the program with some hope selling sprinkled in. I feel like they really should have covered the giant 3 headed elephant in the room and talked about how we keep getting passed up by every QB prospect we identify, despite having 3 QB coaches on the team. The only guy giving us a look right now is Colletto, a JC guy who had no idea OSU was interested in him until I told him back on Jan 11th he might want to reach out to them. Amd he still has a high probability of going to Vanderbilt instead of OSU.
Next year will be painful to watch with our current QB situation, especially if we don’t come out of Ohio State unscathed.

      • I should have mentioned, Angie seems to think we only have about 8 spots remaining in this class given how many scholarships we currently have. I was thinking it was closer to 11, but it could mean there are a couple/few guys who I thought were walkon that are going on scholarship, or it could possibly mean we will meet some other threshold based on how many guys can be signed over a specific period. Either way, we’re looking at 8-11 more commits at a max for the 2nd signing period

  5. “a JC guy who had no idea OSU was interested in him until I told him back on Jan 11th”

I’m sure in your mind you believe this to be true but it’s not. Also if they do land him, it will be because of the staff (Cookus, Smith, Lindgren and Riley). If they don’t, it won’t be because of the staff failing. Dog the staff all you want, but in this instance you are uninformed.

    • That’s not dogging the staff. How did you come to that conclusion?
And I stand by what I said. I’m informed because it was a conversation I had.

      • Painting the picture that the staff is not competent enough to notify a recruit of their interest and that you had to inform him via Twitter (conversation you had).

        • Or pointing out the guy had no idea he was on OSU’s radar as of 9:37PM on January 11th. And as of 9:38PM he did.
You’re reading too much between the lines.

The whole point is we have close to zero depth/experience at QB and we have struck out with every QB we’ve attempted to sign, and the guy we have the best shot at landing barely knows anything about us aside from what he’s learned since Jan 11th. And I would have like to hear them cover that topic on the podcast.

Do you feel good about our QB situation?

Not sure why you think I’m uninformed. If you have more to add to the conversation, just add it.

          • Does anyone have an ideas as to why the staff has had such a hard time finding a QB who can play right away? On the surface it would seem like Smith has a lot in his favor, he was actually a successful college QB and there are three Beav QB’s in the NFL currently who came out of a pro style system. Is that lost on today’s recruit? Do recruits look at the team’s dismal recent performance and say “no way in hell”? It would be interesting to know what the staff are telling recruits about Luton also. His status is unknown currently, right?

          • Don’t forget Tanner Lee. He’s a future NFL QB too.

So that’s three NFL QBs, one more on the way and an actually successful college QB as a coach.

            What gives?

Maybe Mike Riley isn’t mentoring hard enough.

          • The inability to land a QB is odd. Besides Smith’s time as a QB, there’s his success with UW’s offense and Browning’s production. Even with Nall gone, there’s RB talent, some receiving talent in Hodgins, Allen, Taylor, and Bradford, with potential too in Togiai and Smalls. There is no clear QB starter and playing time awaits.

            What gives?

          • Grandpappy Simple Jack and little Jonny Training Wheels can’t sell the program. They’re a couple of dopey nerds in a profession full of alpha males. Golly gee, why won’t anyone commit?

          • In response to Nice above, I can add to the conversation that the staff didn’t fail to notify him of their interest. Once they zero’d in on him as ‘next QB in line’ they initiated contact and met with him the evening of the 12th as I shared in a previous thread. They pushed to have him enrolled and on campus after his offer on the 14th. While Lindgren was visiting him in Yuma last week Cookus was at Camas HS doing homework on the kid and speaking with coaches and former teammates. This research paid off and they were on point during his visit last weekend. He could still end up at Vandy but the staff did good work here.

          • Again, I never said they failed to do amything. I said he wasn’t aware he was on our radar until Jan 11th. Meaning he is relatively new to the entire Oregon State QB recruiting conversation. Nothing more, nothing less.
Thanks for sharing the other info, but try to avoid putting words in my mouth and just take my syatement at face value.

          • Reverend has a vested interest in Colletto for whatever reason. Must know the family or something.
Colletto is clearly not P5 (if even D1) and he loves him so something is up.

          • My comments were mostly in defense of the staff. I don’t think I’ve gushed over the kid that much. I don’t know whether he’s a P5 QB or not. I do know he’s Moevao like tough, intelligent, has a strong arm and a chip on his shoulder the size of Husky stadium. I hope he can put that all together and be a legitimate P5 QB at some point. Because if not, I’m not sure who on the roster can.

    • This one does look good; I do hate to totally write a guy off however, simply because he throws like a pitcher. It appears the ball ends up in the right place.

      • I don’t care about the leg so much as I do care about his follow through. He made a lot of high% passes in HS without ever really getting footwork and mechanics down. He didn’t make many (if any) next level throws. And his pocket presence is shot after one count.

There’s something there to work with, but I don’t see much more than a utility guy who will end up playing S.

  6. “We’re in a hole! We just have to dig ourselves out!” I don’t see us getting any new commits in the next 2 weeks. I think we’ll have more walk-ons earn a scholarship than acquiring new recruits. Just my gut feeling. JS may be wanting to start a new walk-on program where he holds 2-3 scholarships to give to walk-ons who see the field during the season or will have an impact. Just my gut, no source, but he was a walk-on himself.

  7. At this point it seems the coaches are looking for the QB of the future in the 2019 class. Anyone they sign for this class is just to fill out the roster

    • I’ll say this….Lindgren gets a chance immediately to show us his quality as an OC because he’ll have nothing to work with as far as QB’s go.

      This is getting pathetic.

  8. I’m expecting OSU to set up an official visit for Wagner transfer QB Alex Thomson. You may remember him from a Yahoo article recently. Calibeav brought him up again last week in another thread. He would be eligible immediately with 2 years to play 2.
Has received interest from NFL scouts and appears to have a few other schools very interested in him. Tennesse is one school thought to be the favorite.

  9. OT: To make us feel better. At least we are not Illinois. The Football team, MBB, and WBB have not won a B1G game this year. O-fur the conference. That is amazing.

  10. Somebody asked me to put together a list of top targets remaining by position. This list is just who I think are the main guys remaining for OSU to hopefully fill out this class, in order of priority. It’s just my opinion and should in mo way be interpreted as the coaching staff’s wish list. Also, the DLine JC guys are probably higher priority than the HS guys, so they’re not totally in order. One more thing, this list is very fluid…

    Remaining top targets:
    QB: Jack Colletto(JC), Alex Thomson(NAIA)
WR: Isaah Crocker, Nikko Hall, Andre Hunt, Nikia Jones
    RB: Tazhawn Henry, Jemar Jefferson
OL: Joshua Gray, Xavier Delgado, Brandon Kipper(transfer)
    DE: John McCarten, Josh Smith
DT: Ronnie Audette, Kemon Smith, Jeromy Riechner(JC),Xavier Wade(JC)
LB: Matthew Tago, Luke Brockermeyer, Semisi Saluni

  11. Negative scotty prediction: Vigilante umpires and intrateam tensions will kill the baseball season. Said it before, and I still believe it: they’ll struggle to win 30 games.

    • Tough to disagree about vigilante umps. We see that constantly against anything OSU.

As far as the clubhouse vibe and team chemistry, that remains to be seen. The guys inside may have a lot more understanding of what actually happened than the Oregonian will ever know or print. This may be Casey’s last best true us vs. the world team.

These guys are so talented they could win 30 games without trying, its the last 30 that will be the challenge. How can they expect to navigate the ESPN/SEC Omaha ringers without a repeat of last year’s debacle that was completely out of their control.

If it is even possible to be more feuled than they were throughout last year, this team has the motivation and talent to go perhaps undefeated and beat up everybody on the schedule.

      • No big insider info or anything, just a prediction. I suspect there will be umps who will take it upon themselves to decide LH needs to be punished again for his past, and OSU for having him on the team. Especially with recent societal focus and narratives. Greg Street left a bad taste in my mouth, too. All this, mixed with the pressure of high expectations, may lead to internal problems.

I hope I’m wrong, and I will absolutely eat prediction crow later if I am.

    • True, they project him as POY, and yet, Kendall Rogers of D1 says this about why Luke wasn’t included on either the first, second, or third team Preseason All American Teams (which total 15 starting pitchers): “Heimlich is not on the team because we do factor in character to an extent. It’s also the reason why Deacon Liput of Florida was not considered after he was suspended earlier this year.”

But, here is how D1 set up the exercise of naming Preseason All Americans:

D1Baseball’s editors selected the Preseason All-America teams with one guiding principle in mind: To identify the best and most valuable college baseball players for the 2018 season. Past performance and future upside factored into the deliberations…. The objective was to select the players who would provide the most value for a team that wanted to win the College World Series in 2018—the players who are best equipped to perform at an elite level if they were matched up against elite college competition this spring.

This won’t be the last time we see convoluted logic applied to Luke’s situation. I hope that forceful response mentioned by wannabeav is both well put together and widely publicized.

      https://d1baseball.com/awards/2018-d1baseball-preseason-all-americans/

      • I get it, they want to avoid controversy with their selections, but it’s not like Heimlich has done anything wrong between last year and this year. Again, being punished for something he had already been punished for. Based on their stated criteria, the returning NCAA ERA leader on the #2 team in the country should most definitely make one of the 3 All American lists.

          • Looking ahead to Omaha, as well we might, I hope the team has where-to-stay options other than a standard hotel where LSU fans can get in and pull the fire alarm. Perhaps a large airbnb house or two, well-guarded.

  12. D1 not following their own criteria got me to thinking about Greg Street not following the RULES when calling balls and strikes.
Wonder whatever happened to him?……..for one thing, he was an INSTRUCTOR on the SEC staff of the Myrtle Beach Umpire Camp last November.
You cannot make this stuff up!!

  13. Speaking of officials who aren’t ready for prime time,

Following the defeat (vs USC), Wayne Tinkle was critical of foul calls that limited late minutes by Tres Tinkle and Drew Eubanks. The coach said Tuesday he reached out to the Pac-12 head of officiating and that there was agreement on “some things that probably should have gone the other way.”

    as reported by Moran.

  14. In lieu of a quarterback, could the Beavs just hike the ball to Pierce every play and see if he can get 10 yards in three or four carries? One could save program costs, no need for an OC or QB coach either.

  15. If Scott Frost is recruiting Tago as QB, then the Beavs should recruit him with the option of playing qb. I like the idea of a poly guy who is a tough alpha leader at qb. It would set the course for the rest of the team. Give Lindgren his next version of Lofau, Moevao, Tuiasosopo etc

  16. My opinion is the hand ringing over the ” QB situation ” is not based on fact

    Currently on roster

    # 3 rated JC QB – 2016 ( senior)
    # 18 rated DT QB – 2016 ( RS sophomore)
    # 35 rated Pro QB – 2017 ( RS Freshman)
    # 31 rated Pro Qb – 2018 ( Freshman)
    Proven former Walkon – Blount

the idea that the position lacks talent is not based on fact but emotion IMHO and I am not sure any of the late offer / JC / transfers are better options

    • That list is awful. You really think because some random scouting site that probably didn’t even watch film matters more than seeing the guys play in person? Did you see Luton and Blount play? The other 3 remain a mystery for now. Is Moran back at QB? Not sure I heard that’s official. Dukart won’t play for several years. He’s the best of the bunch but needs a RS at the least.

Luton might retire. Blount looked okay at times in a very small sample, but also looked awful at times. Where do you get “proven” from?

    • The only thing “Proven former Walkon – Blount” proved to me is that he acted like a prima-donna in lobbying to keep his redshirt unstained when the team was short enough on backups that the playbook was even more limited.
That, and his quote about liking the lack of pressure involved in running the scout team have me doubting he has any degree of leadership.

        • I can see what you are saying about him being a me fist guy but I wouldn’t blame him too much. Why would anyone want to come in during the middle of a season that is already lost with a coach that quit on you and had already ran off another QB already.

          • “Why would anyone want to come in during the middle of a season that is already lost with a coach that quit on you and had already ran off another QB already.”

That sounds reasonable, UNTIL you remember the enthusiasm surrounding the first weeks of the Cory Hall regime. The effort and performance of the team as a whole would have caused a real leader to step up, to seize an opportunity, to want to be in the fight.

Those with inside sources may know a different story, but I haven’t heard enough to be convinced that Blount is a leader.

          • In this circumstance I don’t blame the kid one bit or consider him “me first.” I seem to recall reading that he met with the coaches and his teammates and everyone seemed to agree and support the decision not to burn it.

I mean, if the coaching staff was the shit show Tyner makes it sound like (real shocker accept the exact opposite) I completely understand. You only get to live this life and play college football once. Regardless of what everyone thinks his talent it I imagine he wants to be a starting D! qb and has NFL aspirations.

So put yourself in the kids shoes: His walk-on freshman year he wanted to redshirt. Starter goes down. Coach decides to throw you in over the other upperclassmen who should be starting on the team to play 1.5 games.

Sophomore year there are 3 qb’s ahead of you to start the fall. You decided this year will be the redshirt year. 1 QB Transfers. 1 Gets injured. You’re head coach (who you followed from Wisconsin) quits mid-year. Now with a couple games left your asked if you’d like to potentially burn it to be the backup. With no head coach? No idea what will happen and if you’ll even be on the team next year?

He made the right decision. I’m sure any good teammate would have supported it. This isn’t just some game to most these kids, it’s their life.

          • “why would anyone want to come in during the middle of a season . . . .?”–because he’s got a scholarship to play football? Because he’s on a team?

      • That’s one way to look at it… Another is… he’s the 1 QB paying $ to play, and I would guess that almost every team has a kid who realizes they could benefit from a Redshirt year and asks to utilize it.

  17. Ok so 247 / ESPN / Rivals rankings don’t matter – I am not a big fan of them it was just to illustrate a point

Luton was only 3 1/2 games into season and getting better when he got hurt / not sure the ” he is garbage” narrative is justified

As far as a blount is concerned, the composure he showed as true freshman walkon getting thrown to fire tells a lot – people I know in the program speak highly of him – Willard also and he was recruited by Smith @UW

Moran is working with QBs currently and I have heard nothing other than message board chatter to indicate Luton ” may retire” –

    • I have a friend who is a big shoe collector. He has a heated closet, plexiglass protective cases…the whole 9 yards. He said there is a store in the Seattle area that one can buy and sell new and used Jordans at that he frequents on occasion, and it’s been known that this store has acquired team-issued Oregon Ducks shoes numerous times. He asked the store employee where they get these shoes, since they are obviously team issued, and the employee said they buy them for cash. My friend said that there’s a store in L.A that is similar, and they were buying USC football player’s team issued shoes a few years ago…one of whom was a player that Riley recruited for OSU but later chose USC, his name escapes me, but he was later kicked off USC. My friend is pretty confident in his belief that Ducks basketball players have sold shoes to this store in Washington based on his knowledge of these particular shoes and how these resale stores acquire them.

  18. I hear what Steve is saying about the QBs but, while we may have a bunch of solid guys, I think it’s pretty clear that none of them have the ceiling of an above-average Pac-12 starter. It may seem like everyone is freaking out like these guys can’t even throw a spiral, but really everyone is more concerned with the fact that we have 5 2nd-3rd string caliber guys which is really tough in a conference that shits out multiple NFL QBs every year. With this recruiting period pretty much out of options, securing one to two promising QB prospects is priority number one for 2019

  19. Why is everyone so down on football? All we need is a quarterback. And a runningback. And halfway-competent recruiting. And no gum chewer… And yeah we’re screwed :(

  20. Saw that Seth Collins was granted his transfer by the NCAA and they approved him to play immediately anywhere, with 2 years to play 2.
Anybody know why he was granted exemption from the 1 year transfer sitting period?
Seems like I could think of a ton more players more deserving than a guy who recently assaulted a female.

    • Can’t answer your question, but the announcement I heard referred to him as a wide receiver; gotta wonder if his dad will show up again touting his abilities as a QB/hurdler.
Didn’t he have a sister at OSU? Track athlete?

      • Yup, time missed. From Brandon Dros of am750: “Collins only appeared in three games during the 2017 season which won’t count against him for eligibility. He’ll have two seasons of eligibility left…”

Ooops, still doesn’t answer the reason he doesn’t have to sit out a
        year.

        • I thought part of the reason he missed so many games last year was because of the assault. Started the season injured for a few games, played in 3 games, then punched a girl at a party and got sat. Something isn’t right here

          • That grad transfer running back from Cal would make for a nice piece if we don’t get Henry, and he was injured almost all of last year so it would seem he would qualify for an extra year, if he were to apply for it.

  21. WBB Reminder: Gals go for their first conference road win at 5pm vs Utah on PAC12.

Important trip for them, a loss in either game this weekend would seriously impact the RPI.

  22. I remember when I was excited to Anderpants coming to OSU. Poor JS has to work through the wake left behind. I was really hoping to see Tyner again this year.

  23. Angry

Recently you posted a message about your friend who’d been told that they have an advanced stage of cancer. I thought of your post as I’ve been watching a video series about the success people have been having with various illnesses, including cancer, by ingesting small doses of cannabis. When I say various illnesses I’m referring to the fact that they state on their website that the plant can be used to prevent, treat & even beat 32+ chronic diseases. They go on to say “…We interviewed 29 world-renowned doctors & health experts + 18 survivors to share with you…”

Here’s a link to episode 1 of the 7 part “The Sacred Plant” series. It’s 1:20 hours in length and I was very impressed with what they have to say and found it to be very informative.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqcDfyTnYA8

It’s not necessary to mention this but I want to add that I’m sure there will be times where this won’t work but I don’t know of anything, including side effects, cost, etc. which would make it not to be worth giving it a try.

Here’s hoping your friend is still alive and is willing to try this very interesting and appealing approach.

    M&S

    • Vitamin B-17, derivative of the apricot seed, is an effective treatment against cancer. A former colleague of mine, actually her mother, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer over two years ago. They wanted to treat her with chemo and radiation and she declined and decided to start taking B-17. Two years later, she is cancer free and healthy. BTW, you can’t buy B-17 in this country, no shock there, but can actually buy over the I-net in UK. I think it’s about $40 for a 30-day supply.

You’ll probably read information on the I-net that debunks the effectiveness of B-17 and for good reason. It’s about $15,960 cheaper than one treatment of chemo….go figure….I’d certainly give that a shot before I’d let them pump me full of poison.

      • Would seem to suggest that food high in B17 might be a wise addition to a diet that is lacking it then? As a preventative measure?

“Vitamin B17 (Amygdalin) (from the Greek word for ‘almond’) is a substance found in the seeds of many kinds of fruits, such as plums, cherries, oranges, nectarines, apples and peaches, as well as in raw nuts, including bitter almonds. Apricots contain a particularly large amount of Vitamin B17 (amygdalin), and it’s also abundant in plants such as clover, lima beans, millet, mung bean sprouts and sorghum.”

    • My dad has had rheumatoid arthritis for 30 years. He has been taking prescription dosage nsaids for all of those 30 years along with a buffer pill to keep it from destroying his guts.

A couple months ago he decided to try some high CBD oil. The one he’s using is about 90% CBD/10% THC. He is completely off of his nsaids and he says he hasn’t felt this good since he was 30. He’ll be 75 this year.

  24. Good Gals win over Utah, 69:58.
Ragged game for the most part, 18 TO’s but points off of TO’s was only +3 for the Utes.
Rebounds and 100% FT shooting made up for a sub-par night as far as assists.

    • Good win which helps RPI. I was somewhat surprised as I was half expecting a close Utah win. Happy to be mistaken. Now they need to take care of business against CO.

  25. Is anybody on here close with the members of the baseball team? Can we find out, is Heimlich actually playing this year?
They had the diamon dinner recently. Was he there?
Why isn’t he anywhere to be seen in this 2017 season reflection/2018 season preview video they played at the diamond dinner?
He was the most valuable player on last years team and he can’t even get a highlight?
That doesn’t give me the impression that this program has his back and has me concerned for the upcoming season now.

    https://mobile.twitter.com/BeaverBaseball/status/957116219550674944/video/1

      • Good catch, it looks like he received a split second of screen time throwing a pitch just after the 1 minute mark. So in a 7 minute video, the ace on the team gets less than a full second of screen time.

Do you know for a fact he’s playing this year or is that just an assumption?

        • Last I was told, he’ll be playing. Pretty sure he will. I don’t agree with how he was treated last year, and believe he should be able to play. But I can also understand not putting him in promotional material…

          • Look I want him to pitch and hope he does well, and maybe become a better man.

What I don’t get is why was he not able to pitch the CWS if he is able to pitch this season? Burns my craw a little bit at the whole situation. Like its okay if he pitches in obscurity, but once it comes we got a shot at the CWS then media comes out with stuff to force him out. That’s ridiculous.

  26. If any of you degenerates get a chance to see stand up Bert Kreischer, I highly recommend doing so. Ive seen quite a few high profile guys live, and The Machine is right up there with them.

Had me in tears for about the first 40 mins of his set tonight. Awesome

  27. @Nicebeaver. Has JS setup a junior day? This class appears to be somewhat of a loss, so hopefully they are getting after the 2019 kids, particularly some QB’s.

    • Only thing Ive seen regarding spring gamr/ junior day is that it will be in April(actually in Spring rather than winter this year)
Last year, spring game was way too early and was a cold and rainy day. Just a bad idea all around. Maybe 1000 people there at best, and that is being generous.

As far as offers, we have offered several 2019 players already, which appears to be pretty normal for every team. Thing is, we’re not likely to sign any of these early offer guys because every other team is offering too, but you at least have to try with the cant miss prospects in case you get lucky

    • Yes, to cover hosting. We’re $200 short but also have until June.
I’d also like to be able to give NiceBeaver some $ for his efforts. During recruiting season (starting Feb 1) I’m going to donate half of all donations to him.

What’s been a downer is the donations have been either overly generous or non-existent. The idea was really low ($1 here and there) from many people, but instead a few have carried the whole to this point. The “buy a cup of coffee thing” was meant to be “if you like the post donate fifty cents or something” and hope it added up through the year. It hasn’t worked out that way.

        • The donate button is paypal, though.

It’s fancy, too, where people can setup a recurring payment (like $1 per month or whatever) or a one time (neat) deal.

          • Oh good. I guess I should’ve figured it out but I thought you posted something about being done with paypal so the button didn’t register with me.

          • Yeah originally that was true and somewhat experimental seeing how many people use or were willing to convert to crypto (the answer was zero), but ultimately decided on Paypal for convenience.

Bitcoin or Etherium are still fine — you’d just have to email me for the wallet addy.

A few donations came in today, so thanks, guys, for the generosity. We have hundreds of readers, so if each donated .50 cents per month as recurring it would fund the site, make me work harder/improve it, and allow me to give some to the pinch hitters and NiceBeav something for their work. Something to keep in mind.

      • That’s very generous of you, but I want to see the site hosting costs covered more than anything so we can keep this pirate ship afloat.

        Go generous Beavs!

  28. What would you guys consider a good recruiting recycle for Smith? I think if he can nab Crocker, hall, Henry, and some quality to would be a success. Obviously it will depend on if they can get a quality qb this cycle.

    • Crocker, Hall, Henry and a viable QB would be legit good given the circumstances he came in under.

Have a good feeling about Crocker and Henry. Nicebeaver, your thoguhts?

      • How about 0 for 4? Lol…

I think Hall was our at the first signing day, but now he and his dad seem to be enamoured with the attention the late signing period has brought them. Henry lives the attention too, and Crocker plays everything very close to the vest.
If I had to guess, we get Jermar Jefferson after this weekend, and Henry moves on. I dont think this is necessarily a bad thing though. I think I like Jefferson better for his size and body of work.

        http://www.hudl.com/v/27yH30

With Crocket, I think it’s down to the Oregon schools, but I dont like that he tweeted out his announcement date while in the middle of his Oregon official visit. Advantage Oregon(although they have several other WR targets who could take their spots)

Hall, I have no idea anymore. I thought he was a Beavs up till this week, but now I’m pretty unsure what he wants to do. I still think Beavs are the favorite, but he has several options.

We all know where we stand with QB. No program changers coming in this class, so we look to next year.

Still, I think we end up with some decent DT, OL and DE/OLB options with most of our remaining spots. Feeling pretty good about Kemon Smith and his teammate Josh Smith from Lousiana. Audette I think will be a Beav too. And we’ll get at least one stop gap JC D tackle.

    • A QB who can survive the next season or two while Smith gets some better talent at QB. A game manager basically. Doesn’t turn the ball over. This is the biggest need. The ceiling on the current guys is pretty low.

The big wish is Eason from Georgia who Smith does have some connection to but it’s basically a .000001% chance of him transferring here.

  29. Don’t worry so much about the whole quarterback thing. JS can pretty easily poach a good high school running quarterback that is being recruited by other schools as a defensive back to join the Beavs. Convince him that running the option will be his ticket to starting as a freshman and winning the Heisman.

When the season arrives you; run to the right..pitch, run to the left… keep the ball, run up the middle.. punt from the 27 yard line on 4th and 3.

Worked wonders for me. Plus it’s very exciting for the fans. We were putting 15-18,000 in Parker almost every Saturday.

  30. So turn the basketball game on, and every ticky tack foul called against Beavs, and none against the Ducks. Just atrocious….so unenjoyable to watch!!!

  31. Regarding the MBB game last night, unfortunately I thought the result was predictable. This team is mentally soft and it showed in the first half and it has shown in all of the blown second half leads this season. I think WT is getting a pass because they are so much better than last season, but I’m not impressed. Three top 100 players, a top 20 recruiting class a couple of years ago. gets you 11-9?

At some point I think some heat needs to be turned up on Tinkle. This has become an underachieving group of players. With the talent, they should easily be in the upper half of the league. They are now 10th in the standings.

    • Eubanks has really regressed this season, for whatever reason. He made a big jump from his freshman to sophomore year, but he’s down this year in almost every statistical category. His conference scoring was over 15 ppg last year, and under 9 ppg this season. Likewise, rebounding is down. He’s only averaging 2 free throw/game and missing those. Idk…its like subtraction by addition with Tres coming back being offset by Eubanks going into a funk. Seems like a coaching issues, but it’s getting worse not better.

      • Wayne Tinkle made a comment about the team “not doing what he’s asked them on offense”, but of course there was no follow up question, which would be….why don’t they execute what you’ve coached them to do? Thompson Jr. made a comment in the Oregonian regarding lack of mental toughness in regards to the game yesterday. Not a good look when the players admit they are lacking on the mental side of the game.. At this point, all I have to go on with WT during his tenure is that he was successful when he had GP2 (CR recruit), otherwise I have nothing.

      • I think Rupp is a problem. He is supposed to be a ‘big man’ coach but as noted, Eubanks has regressed. Eubanks expressed his frustration last year but had nowhere to go – certainly not the NBA. And Big G? Reichle and the player from LCC – really tall- I don’t want to wait to see if they are coachable. I wonder if, once again, it’s a case of not wanting to get rid an old buddy.

        • There were also some comments from WT about Eubanks not staying in the paint last night. He took three shots for the entire game. Eubanks is also a disaster when he’e double-teamed. The team is inept on offense, their spacing in terrible. Some of that may be that they know Eubanks can’t get them the ball for a spot up three so they don’t move around.

          • I wonder if the whole team dynamics are kind of screwed up with three sons of coaches on the team, including two who are the “leaders.” That being said, the first half looked like the WBB against UCLA. Totally over matched from a quickness and ball handling standpoint. Not getting a ball handler in this year is coaching malpractice by Tinkle.

          • This team does not have any fire. I’ll take GP-2 and his dunks in opponents faces, Morris-Walker and his air guitar after a made three or Gomis’ get that shit out of here blocks.

          • Whenever I am at Beaver games, it seems like WT is always exasperated by Eubanks at some point in the game. WT will be trying to direct Eubanks to a specific position or play and Eubanks will just do his own thing. I think Eubanks is a problem and tries to do much himself, rather than play within the team. If he keeps it up, he could become a locker room cancer…

  32. 3 commits so far this weekend.
Later yesterday we landed LB Josh McCarten and this morning was the RB I mentioned above, Jermar Jefferson. I think we actually lucked out getting him so late. Probably also means no Henry.

Wouldn’t be surprised if we also get Saluni this weekend and that Hawaii transfer OL, Brandon Kipper(who would sit for a year)

  33. In the last week or 2, both recruiting sites have moved Nikko down from a 4* to 3*.
So maybe that means we are landing him still?
If he were going to Oregon, USC or UCLA you know that he’d still be a 4*. Gotta keep those class ranking projecting out they they are supposed to. Nikko must have had a bad weight training session.
The Beaver bump works in mysterious ways.

    • I think they only give out like 250 4-star ratings (or something like this, a fix number basically), so if other guys got bumped he might fall for that reason.

  34. You may have seen a rivals tweet about former UCLA DT ommit Niti Liu coming for a visit. It’s a little misleading. He doesn’t have an OSU offer right now and won’t be visiting unless they decide to offer her. With only 1 weekend left before signing day, I think he ends up visiting Boise St instead. We already have Hodgins plus the JC guy from yesterday, plus potentially Audette and another JC guy. Not sure if they would take another freshman at that position, but it’s still possible. Will have to wait and see.

    • First thing I noticed, after just a cursory glance at the film, was how slow he looks.
He has some decent offers. I’ll have to watch the entire tape and see what they like…maybe he has power or elusiveness.

    • Well, Quizz Rodgers wasn’t a speed burner either, but he turned out to be okay….I have a hard time believing he runs only a 4.7 40.

      • So the guy looks extremely slow on film and posts on his own recruiting page that he runs a 4.7 40 (at a Nike combine event no les) yet you just don’t think so. Ok man, make your own truths

  35. Jefferson looks like a solid 3 star RB. It would appear his 40 time is accurate based on his highlight film. Probably would increase to 4.5-4.6 in college.

Very productive senior year. 1,848 yards and 34 touchdowns. 9.1 ypc. Won a CIF title. In each playoff game he was over 100 yards. Decent hands.

Obviously the 40 time is a immediate concern. But when watching his film, his football speed is fast. I noticed, in a lot of his breakaway runs, he is still accelerating when reaching the secondary. He doesn’t slow down, which is why he doesn’t get caught from behind. Good vision, follows his blocks.

Guy is a solid pickup. Has a lot of potential. A redshirt year would be extremely beneficial to his development.

      • I don’t know that I agree with “he looks slow”…..what I look for is separation when the guy breaks into the open and from what I saw, he either maintained his separation from defenders chasing him or increased. As I recall, Quizz wasn’t the fastest RB but sure was a beast of a RB. I think JJ will be just fine as long as we have an O-line to create some holes for our RBs.

      • I think the “looks slow” observation is based partially on his running mechanics. He’s not a smooth runner, by any means.

That said, I watched about half his film and didn’t see anyone catch him from behind. If I had any criticism of the highlights, I would actually say it’s mostly just him running past people, without showing much of an ability to run between the tackles. He has good balance and doesn’t go down easily.

  36. Thought it was interesting that James Rogers and Crocker started following each other this weekend. Hunt and Rogers too. Now I’m seeing rumors that Rogers might be announced as part of our staff soon. I know he was a grad assistant under Riley at Nebraska for a period of time, so makes sense that Smith and Co would try to bring him on board. Don’t know what the role would be yet, but assuming it would be something similar to Kerry Taylor’s role last year at OSU(since he is no longer with the team)

  37. Now this tweet from the TMP coach earlier in the month makes a little more sense. But now I’m womdering James is working with TMP, or with OSU? Suddenly this makes the probability of Crocker swing in OSUs favor, in my opinion. Could also be why one of the tmp players mentioned a week or 2 ago that OSU has some big moves planned. Interesting…..

    https://twitter.com/CoachTTMP/status/951911498015637504

    • Heard back from somone who saw him this weekend. Wasn’t sure what his role is at this point, but that it was Rodgers first day back on campus this weekend.

    • He could be playing mind games with the fanbase of the team he plans to not choose. You know?
Let’s just see what he does. He has a much better opportunity to start game 1 for the Beavs, and the Ducks coaching situation is more uncertain. I still feel slight Beav lean on him but we’ll see in a few hours.

      • He could start at OSU, but who’s throwing the ball and how well would be a fair and obvious question for him. He could have to wait for the ’19 cycle to get a QB, who may not play until ’20. Conversely, the Ducks have a known and well regarded QB for likely the next two years. Absent some surprise signing in the next several days, OSU’s QBs could be a concern for him.

Also, even if UO coaching is less certain, they’ll continue to throw money at it.

  38. This is fantastic news. James Rodgers had a tremendous work ethic. Could be a phenomenal coach, and deep down dwells an extreme expectation of effort, discipline and capability.

  39. I don’t have much optimism that Crocker will choose the beavs. He’s got a lot of good options and the beavs look like the worst one.

    • I’m not sure where we stand. He knows several guys with ties to our team, which helps. I think it comes down to what position he wanta to play. Nebraska is apparantly selling him as a QB, but we like him on defense. I dont know which he prefers. Also don’t know Utah’s chances, so it’s really just a wait and see

I think he genuinely is considering OSU, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we land him. (Why can’t we give him the option of QB or defense?)

He would be a really big pickup considering how late we were on recruiting him. Bray and Nebraska did much of the legwork there.

      • “Why can’t we give him the option of QB or defense?”

No doubt. 6’3″, 228 lb. “4*” according to 24/7 at least. Let him RS as a QB if he wants, see how his passing develops, and if need be, could probably talk him into playing D.

Is OSU looking at him as a LB?

      • Everyone seems to think Nebraska, but that we’re slightly in it.

Makes sense. Bray can’t sell him on Nebraska, then change schools and sell him on the coach (himself) or a new school. Doesn’t make sense if you’re the recruit.

Unless he really likes Bray that much.

  40. Any chance Willard is a solid under the radar qb who’s already on our roster?

Trying to remember, but didn’t he come from a Veer (or some other stupid High School offense) and spent a lot of his high school career recovering from a big injury?

Didn’t he 7 on 7 with some of the TMP dudes, and several of them hyped him as the QB of the future? And he won some passing camps? Grasping at straws I guess, but hopefully theres potential there if coached up properly.

  41. Posted this a few days back. Updating with any changes.

    Remaining top targets:
    QB: Jack Colletto(JC), Alex Thomson(transfer)
WR: Isaah Crocker, Nikko Hall, Andre Hunt, Nikia Jones
    RB: Tazhawn Henry(likely Texas Tech)
OL: Joshua Gray, Xavier Delgado, Brandon Kipper(transfer)
DE: Josh Smith(visiting this weekend, likely commit)
DT: Ronnie Audette(could be OL too), Kemon Smith(visiting this weekend, likely commit)
LB: Matthew Tago(Top3), Luke Brockermeyer, Semisi Saluni

So, looking at our remaining spots(I’ve seen talk that we have 5 spots left, although my count shows 8. we could be anywhere in that range)

If we land both of the Lousiana Smith guys, which I think will happen, then we have around 3-6 spots left for everybody else.

If I had to guess, I would say the final few spots are filled by Hunt, Jones, Audette, Smith, Smith, Tago/Saluni(one or the other, depending on Tago’s decision)
Then, I’m not sure, but I think we somehow make room for Kipper if somebody else transfers our or retires.

Of course, this will all change day to day, but that’s my guess right now. Crocker could prove me wrong later today, but I think he’s a duck unfortunately.

      • Or both considering the uncertainty of Luton. Plus opening at Ohio State may not be good for the health our QB. Could really see the starter of game 1 being dinged up and out for week 2. Isn’t there the loophole that would count Colletto against last year’s class since he was a full qualifier before going the JUCO route?

      • Haven’t heard yet if Thomson is coming, but i do know of a next QB who is waiting to hear the futures of Colletto and Thomson because he would be next in line and likely to commit on the spot.
Sorry I can’t name drop right now.

        • Thanks for the info. I understand not name dropping, but would you be more/less excited about this other prospective recruit compared to Colletto and Thomson?

          • Most people would probably say less. I mean, he’s not the #1 option for a reason. But, I think he is capable of at least filling the spot as a backup option.

          • Fair enough, thank you! I am really hoping for Thomson, but I trust niner and Lindgren. If us dummy fans know we need a QB, I’m sure they are losing sleep over it!

          • Of the top 2, I like Thomson too. Bit the more I see of him on film, the more he looks like Luton 2.0. They actually look very similar in build, style of play, and they kindof just look alike.

          • Yeah I don’t love Thompson but I just think Colletto looks so bad it makes Thompson look good.
Colletto had an Ivy offer right? So maybe he’s brainy and makes up for his poor motion and arm with that. Smith might see a lot of himself in Colletto and be biased for that reason.

          • Colletto has a Vandy offer. He didnt go the JC route out of highschool because of grades. It was because he lacked D1 offers and needed some exposure. By all accounts, he’s a pretty smart kid

        • Question is…..is he any good?

As a side note, I’d sure like to see the Beavs have a QB already committed to provide some assurance to Crocker that the Beavs have their QB for the future. I gotta think that Crocker’s decision hinges on at least having someone capable of throwing him the ball.

          .

  42. Shocking absolutely no one, PAC getting zero respect and currently only 3 teams projected in the tourney field (Arizona, USC and ASSU). Personally I think ASSU is a stretch but they’re getting the benefit of the doubt due to going undefeated in non conference and beating Kansas. If they get in they’ll get bounced early.

NIT has 5 in and OSU is among those “being considered” but on the outside looking in. Beavs have too many flaws to be considered for anything other than the Craig Robinson invitational. Which is either pathetic or we’ve over estimated the talent that signed 3 years ago.

“Others Seriously Considered (Strong CBI/CIT candidates): Oakland, Indiana, Wright St., UNCG, William & Mary, Northwestern, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Oregon St.”

    http://www.nycbuckets.com/current-nit-bracketology/

  43. Would someone please reach out to Crocker and let him know if he comes to Oregon State he’ll help break records!!!

Just don’t tell him the record isn’t for games won, or touchdowns, but for the amount of a Isiah’s on 1 college football at the same time. We cannot do it without him.

  44. Hey guys, so I’m going to be moving to Colorado. This won’t be for several weeks (end of Feb) so I’ll be here to cover recruiting, but the packing and driving might result in some down time. Just a head’s up.

  45. He has to push his commitment back to 6pm, after his in house with UO… He wanted to make sure the check from Uncle Phil cleared the bank.

  46. No surprise to see another highly rated recruit dismiss OSU. Must be the lack of airport and diversity, maybe even the poor climate, too small of a town, no party spots, whatever other excuses come to mind other than the lack of a winning culture and mentality from the President to AD to head coach and staff, and ultimately the roster of players. Most recruits want to be part of winning and can sniff out loser programs to avoid. This is why it will be tough to dig out of the bottom. It will take a special group of guys who are willing to take the long hard route to success by working for it over 3-4 years rather than joining into something that is already established and paid for by others.

  47. From Benny’s House:

“With that said, happy trails Seth, it is for the best. You are a walking embodiment of the CGA era… a promise of greatness with no results.”

    Ouch. (And true….)

    • I still think Seth could have been good as a QB has he been brought along slowly. Had he sat for the first two years, I think he could have developed into a decent pac 12 qb.

But of course, GA gave him the starting job when he was clearly not ready. And obviously SC got a huge ego when given the starting job as a true frosh which was a problem.

I really don’t fault SC for much of his play. GA never figured out what he wanted on offense and really set him up to fail much like the other QBs.

    • Not to mention a bunch of secret off the field issues. Really was a perfect embodiment of the “era”. He had potential (big arm, electric running ability) but combine his attitude with that woefully incompetent staff and there was no shot

  48. Not new, buy RE: this recruiting class, I think it’s productive to keep recent context in perspective. GA fucked up substantially and created a level of instability that’s dangerous for recruiting.

I was a supporter of J. Smith being in the applicant pool given his coaching experiences (Erickson/Riley as a player, Peterson as a coach, Browning’s development and performance). He nailed the opening presser, and except for the Riley hire, is doing mostly good things. Maybe more coaches than recruiters on staff(?), but in the long run that may pan out.

Missing on Petras was a major disappointment, but Petras went to Iowa City (which I’ve heard is great) and got his head turned. Also, OSU has no well established center, and needs an upgrade there. If Smith can land some more O lineman, a solid 3* QB who is a good decision maker, or a 4* who is that plus extra physical talent, the recruiting landscape starts to change.

I think the new DC’s emphasis on pursuit and tackling will change the game for OSU including field position and number of possessions, and start to make things easier for the offense. If OSU has that WITH a solid QB pick up, things start to change.

The program has to be more important than a player. And while it sucked to lose a potential program changer like Petras, Smith should not be judged just on this class.

I know this may sound like typical OSU, apology-based acceptance of a lower standard, but what a mess Andersen left. For anybody competing with OSU for QBs or WRs, they would be so easy to recruit against. “Who’s going to throw you the ball? Who’s going to snap it to you? What kind of situations is the D going to leave you in?!?” Maybe they don’t get that specific, but it wouldn’t be difficult.

Several PAC schools landed “4*” QB recruits, OSU being a rare exception. If Smith can’t get a solid, PAC level QB recruit in the next cycle, I’d be concerned. This is a transition class coming off a one win season; Smith and staff are going to have to win some games on coaching, not just talent, to impress future recruits.

Also, lets see what they do differently with the existing roster. The difference in play will be telling; both with the players and the staff.

  49. Ronnie Audette is a better lineman recruit than GA ever got. All the skill players are great and all but you win games on the lines. Good to see Smith getting solid talent in those spots on short notice

  50. We hit the hosting fee goal, by the way. Thanks all.

You can still donate, but if you plan to do so maybe wait until Feb 1st, recruiting week, when NiceBeav gets half the donations.

    Go Beavlettes.

  51. Audette looks like a good pickup. Plays with a mean streak. Tibesar commit.

Was a late bloomer in the recruiting. Was committed to North Dakota State before being offered by p5 schools. Could fit at NT or either guard spot on offense. To me, his upside is on defense.

Will need a redshirt year to reshape his body for college football. If he can gain more athleticism, his potential is very high.

  52. My thoughts on Crocker:

Main reason we needed him was just to have a legit 4 star in this class. Also sucks he seemed to genuinely be into us, and may have been a silent at one time just to flip to the fucking ducks. Sucks that the big fish who are on to us always seem to take their official to another school right before signing day, and have a change of heart for whoever they visit last.

All that said, not really a position of need. Receivers are a somewhat dime a dozen, and we do have some solid young guys on the squad. I think people forget how silky smooth Kolby Taylor is. Probably would’ve been a solid 4* if not injured for senior season.

Bottom line is you need a line who can block, a dl that can penetrate, and a qb who can throw the ball before the receiving core matters.

Will be fun to watch cotton or manning try to lock their boy down for the next few years.

In other words: we didn’t want him anyway (unless of course he flips on signing day just to fuck with the shmucks. In that case we want him)

    • Didn’t the Ducks screw him over a bit once already in recruiting, and yet he came back to them?
That’s the most disturbing part, and why I don’t care too much. Good luck to him and condolences about his mom, but time to move on to guys with the right mindset.

      • Mindset is something i’ve been thinking about. I can see Smith and staff getting away from the types of guys who play fanbases against each other to drum up attention. Doesnt seem to be their style, but they got stuck with a few this cycle just because they were GA holdovers. Wouldnt be suprised to see the tmp mafia hype die down. Its overdone anyways.

        • Yeah, I think we’re going to be like Boise State. A lot of these recent guys look like that type. It would be cool if it works. Not sure that can work with a full P-12 schedule vs a Mountain West schedule. Colletto even fits a bit in that mold. I don’t like him, but I see why they might.

    • You need guys like Crocker to show that higher rated recruits are willing to go to Corvallis. It can start a domino effect. Doesn’t matter what position he plays. If he’s better than the current guys, you take him.

It took Rueck two years to score the big recruiting class that changed the program. After that class, he’s been rolling.

  53. It will be interesting to compare the likes of hunt and hall to him over the future years. Could turn out they become better even though at this point maybe they’re not.

    • One thing to keep in mind with Crocker, he’s a 19 year old already as a highschool senior in January.
Most guys in his class arent even 18 yet. That extra year of maturity has to have been helpful to him staying ahead of his peers physically. You would think some could catch up a bit in college.

  54. Nice to see some commits coming our way even if they are not the flashy higher profile players. Can’t blame Crocker for not coming as we really don’t have a decent qb. If JS can turn this ship around, we will start landing some of the bigger star recruits, but never in great quantity. The comparison to Boise State and to a lesser extent Washington State, is a great blueprint on how this program is going to succeed. The nice thing about success at Oregon State. as fleeting as it has been in the past, is that it is done with without mega money and on a more grassroots level. I wasn’t crazy about the JS hire, but I am cautiously optimistic that he can pull it off. Wouldn’t it be nice to see a stable successful period of OS football, something I have not seen in my lifetime?

  55. Nall gets invited to combine, will test as RB…

WBB move up to #16. Hope they can beat Stanford Friday night then Stanford take down UO on Sunday….

  56. S-I with a recruiting story on Tom Brady, Prodigal Gramps featured a few times, with references to his returns…

“At this point, Cal, UCLA and USC and Illinois were Michigan’s main competition. Mike Riley, who would go on to become the head coach of Oregon State, the San Diego Chargers, Oregon State (again) and Nebraska, had come to USC in 1993 as the offensive coordinator when John Robinson returned for a second head coaching stint with the Trojans. That fall, Riley spotted Brady playing for Serra and immediately made him a recruiting priority. Riley recruited Brady throughout the 1993 and 1994 seasons. “I really very simply liked the way he threw the football,” Riley said. “I always look for guys that are just kind of natural passers, that can get rid of the ball and have a good, quick release.” Riley also loved the fact that Brady played catcher, because the best catchers have a very quick release to throw out would-be base-stealers.”

“Later, Riley would have a chance to correct his mistake. He was hired in January 1999 to coach the San Diego Chargers. Brady finished at Michigan in 1999 and was available in the 2000 draft. Riley’s Chargers passed on Brady five times before the Patriots chose him with the 199th overall pick. “So I lost out on a couple of great opportunities to coach a guy that I really, really admire,” said Riley, who returned to Oregon State as an assistant last month after he was fired at Nebraska in November.”

    https://www.si.com/college-football/2018/01/30/tom-brady-recruitment-michigan-national-signing-day

    • Yah….golly gee wally, the guy was right under my nose seven times, but heck, gotta love the fact that I had an opportunity…..Go away and Fuck You!! Riles

      • The Riley apologists actually make up excuses for this, too, and say SD made him draft all these other guys ahead of Brady. Doesn’t sound at all like that was the case.

In the article, Riley admits it was his mistake. So much for another false narrative.

        • Surprisingly, Riley apparently told the parents in person that USC would not be offering him.

Unsurprisingly, Riley DOESN”T say something like “What I learned from this is…..and that’s why I do things differently now……” it is just the “Aw schucks, I missed out…”

Probably more interesting to me than the Riley angle is just the differences in recruiting and over the long term, just show many factors go into a player’s success. Some of the QBs that USC chose over Brady I don’t remember at all, either for their college play or NFL….Cade McNown – who I didn’t realize was from West Linn Oregon – is mentioned in the article, and he went on to play poorly and briefly for the Bears.

        • Riley was NOT in charge of picking players when he coached the Chargers so even if Riley admits it was a mistake, it was not his mistake.

Bobby Beathard was the GM of those teams and he had final say over who got drafted. If anyone actually thinks Rilay as an unproven rookie head coach was making the decisions for the 2000 Chargers over Bobby Beathard who had 6 Super Bowl appearances on his resume has either GM or head of player personnel they are letting their hatred for Riley blind them.

Riley may regret not getting Brady but it was not Riley’s call to make. It just wasn’t. No false narrative, just reality. Bobby Beathard picked the players in 2000, not Riley.

  57. Not judging anyone else, but I just can’t get into recruiting news. Why get all worked up over people who probably won’t even be here?

    • The groanian has been running a series of slideshow type ‘articles’ on in-state recruits and how they fared after high school. Surprisingly terrible as it turns out. Many that went to big name schools, a lot of duck players, a few beavos, and very few had success despite the hoopla.

Just scrolling through it’s amazing the number of wash outs, transfers, never signed, never played.

Isaac Seumalo and Lyerla the only players to see the NFL.

Oregon is not a football hotbed but definitely shows how few kids actually make it big in sports.

    • I ask myself that question almost daily. I’ve learned to not really get worked up about it, but instead follow it as a hobby. I like being informed about the landscape of the team and roster movement. A few years ago, I never looked at that stuff and mostly avoided it.

  58. Probably a good time to revisit this:

    Remaining top targets:
    QB: Jack Colletto(JC-Top 2-OSU likely), Alex Thomson(transfer), Unnamed (JC)-PWO
WR: Nikko Hall, Andre Hunt, Nikia Jones
RB: Tazhawn Henry(Texas Tech-likely), Kenyon Sims
OL: Joshua Gray, Xavier Delgado, Brandon Kipper(transfer)
DE: Josh Smith(visiting this weekend, Top 2-OSU likely)
DT: Kemon Smith(visiting this weekend, Top 2-OSU likely)
    LB: Matthew Tago(Top3), Luke Brockermeyer
    CB: Jaden Robinson(PWO)

By my count, we have about 7 spots left(Saluni doesn’t count as a mission guy), Some say less spots are available, so 7 is our cap but we may be operating with less.

If we land both of the Lousiana Smith guys and Colletto, which I think will happen, then we have around 1-4 spots left for everybody else.

If I had to guess, I would say the final few spots are filled(in order of liklihood) by Hunt, Brockermeyer, Gray, Jones, Tago, Sims, Delgado, Hall, Henry.
Obviously too many guys to fill a small number of spots.

Then, I’m not sure, but I think we somehow make room for Kipper if somebody else transfers our or retires.
I think they make at least one guy wait while they wait to hear about Tago’s decision, and then the rest of the dominoes will fall.

I also think the unnamed JC QB I mentioned yesterday has a good shot of coming in as a PWO with a chance to earn a scholarship.

Jaden Robinson is another PWO candidate at this point, and he is visiting this weekend, but he also has a couple of offers to smaller schools which I think he would take over a PWO spot at an out of state school.

      • I don’t think that’s allowed, but I could be wrong.
I know a guy like Jaelen Bush is from Washington and paying full out of state tuition to attend OSU

        • and he came in with nearly a 4.0 GPA, while also completing his associates degree during high school. If anybody were eligible for academic aid, it would be him.

          • Grant would imply giving aid based on financial need. If anyone qualifies for this then there is certainly no limitation whether you are playing football or not. Academic aid is another situation altogether.

          • Financial need won’t come close to covering out of state tuition. I know you used to be able to get in state even if you weren’t from Oregon as part of an agreement between a bunch of western universities (I went to Arizona for 1 year this way); not sure if that agreement is still a thing though.

  59. One thing I’m not sure about, is the status of Isaiah Tufaga. His profile says he’s LDS, but I’ve never heard anybody mention if he’s mission bound or not. If he is, that obviously opens up another spot. Not sure why this topic hasn’t been covered anywhere.

  60. You may see conflicting reports about the Smith kids’ visit status. I can say that as of 5 minutes ago, their trip is still happening although they dont have their flights arranged yet.

    • I’ve read that they did actually have their visits cancelled and we are finished recruiting DL guys. Guess we’ll know when they either do or do not show up in Corvallis this weekend. I was kindof meh on them anyway and if the class is almost full like you say, I’d rather have Tago, Hall, Henry, Sims or other guys with multiple offers take the remaining spots

      • Bummer if true. Those guys were both ready to commit this week. Must have bigger fish in the pipeline if they got told to stay home.

If it means anything, my spidey senses are tingling for Tago. He seems to be pretty interested in what OSU has to offer. Coud be our class headliner if he comes here too.

  61. https://twitter.com/The_Real_Bob/status/958457887801724928

Pat Casey on Luke Heimlich: I haven’t had a discussion with anybody about whether I think it’s good for the team to bring him back … We just play baseball. He’s here to play baseball, just like every other guy that’s out here. #GoBeavs”

“Pitchers Luke Heimlich, Bryce Fehmel, Jordan Britton, Sam Tweedt and Kevin Abel are all competing for starting jobs, Casey said.”

    • Good to get confirmation that he’s back. Pitching rotation will be fairly inexperienced for our Sat/Sun guys it appears. Anybody know who the likely favorites are for those spots?

Abel seems to be pretty highly regarded as a freshman. Is Fehmel the other most likely starter?

  62. I’m rewatching Colletto to figure out why I don’t like him. Mostly it’s the bizarre throwing motion. He’s actually quite accurate and can run a bit. But that throwing motion is so bizarre…looks like he has such a bad arm that he has to wind up and get behind each throw. I’ve never see anything like it. Guess time will tell. My preliminary ranking: high 2 star. The accuracy is intriguing. I’m always a sucker for accuracy. Still not a fan and find it unfortunate we went from Petras to this guy, but at least there is a little something there.

    Film: http://www.hudl.com/profile/3921383/Jack-Colletto

      • Yeah, hopefully he’s the great under the radar QB that other teams always seem to get and we always miss on. I have no idea how he projects given that arm strength and throwing motion. My first reaction was he doesn’t project at all. After rewatching, I see a little something there. If he becomes great it will have to be through intelligence, accuracy, and mobility.

        • Accuracy and pretty decent touch. Seems like he knows how to take some off it or give some extra loft when a receiver needs it.

That leg! That shit is crazy. He even does it when he’s scrambling.

    • He kind of reminds me of Jeff Garcia.

Only NFL qb I can think of that did a ton of Jump throws and had a bit of a post throw leg kick as well

    • Didn’t realize Camas plays in the largest division in the state of Washington, which is 4A. I always figured when I saw 4A that Washington was similar to Oregon and went clear up to 6A.
Colletto’s Camas team went undefeated in 2016 including wins over Oregon’s Central Catholic and Sherwood that season. How the F does the state Gatorade player of the year on the state’s championship team fall through the cracks?

I guess part of that can be explained by him only starting for 1 year, 2016. And also the closest D1 team geographically to him was Oregon State with Andersen and McGiven (easy to understand why he could be overlooked for that reason too.
I posted this a couple of weeks back but re-posting here in case anybody wants to read up a little on him.

      http://www.clarkcountytoday.com/sports/camas-qb-jack-colletto-opts-to-go-the-jc-route/

      • I think the reason is his unorthodox throwing motion/leg kick and his arm doesn’t look great. Looks like he’s winding up a bit for some of those deeper throws.

My guess is nobody knows what to make of that, and they had more prototypical options. I don’t know what to make of him, and I’m pretty good with QBs. My first reaction was a big no, and only after re-watching did I see some positives.

        • just read your comments about his leg kick after I posted the same thing down below…..looks really weird as I’ve never seen any QB do that.

      • I watched his highlight film and looks like he has a decent arm but his back leg when he pushes off during his release…..he just kind of whips it out behind him instead of pushing off and forward. That needs to be fixed quickly because someone’s going to hit that leg or knee and his season will be done….it just looks weird as I’ve never seen any QB do that before.

    • The dude hates on your site for being critical of OSU athletics yet on his Twitter feed he brags about being blocked by @BeaverMBB.

    • I just tweet in response to the dumb ass who tweeted. If you think about it logically in that LH was not legally required to disclose any prior convictions and the school didn’t have a policy requiring him to do so….why would he have disclosed this to OSU who was recruiting him? He didn’t disclose this information because it would have ended his recruitment with OSU. Furthermore, if he didn’t have to disclose, then how would have anyone at OSU known of his past history unless they did the “routine” background check? As usual, some Duck fans lack the capacity for logic…..

    • People who don’t like OSU will not let this go. But we here on the blog can. So let’s stop obsessing over it. Like Casey says, he’s here, he’s playing, that’s it. Move forward

    • Simeon is one of the best high school hoops programs in Illinois that’d be a nice get. I still think we’ll push hard to bring in a grad transfer for next year. We can be a tourney team next year with solid PG play but without it the ceiling is probably NIT

        • Man among boys. That’s what you want to see in lineman.

The nice thing about him, is that he isn’t just overpowering them with strength and size. He gets his pads low and uses his leverage to gain an advantage.

          • He holds on just about every play. It’s easy to overpower a football opponent when he’s the only one playing football. There are some straight up tackles in there, so I hesitate to call those holds, though, technically they are.

You guys have some orange colored glasses on for these PSAs. I see we’re ignoring the fact that Colletto is just a short-arming pumpkin lobber too.

I guess we just have to wait until they’re on the team before we stop pretending we see things we don’t?

          • “…Colletto is just a short-arming pumpkin lobber…” too funny.

Maybe he’ll return OSU to former heights of glory and be referred to OSU annals as “The Great Pumpkin Lobber.”

          • I actually enjoy that type of throw in context. Kellen Moore made a living on that throw when on the move. Instead of launching a BB at the short side, he would lob over the first line of D and hit his receiver in stride after he turned upfield.

What I don’t like about Colletto is those are his only throws. Granted, it’s a highlight tape. So I’m sure boundary throws are on some tape somewhere. I’m not worried about his motion other than he short-arms his follow through a lot. That normally says to me he’s aiming. And he had a tendency to pull it down too fast in HS.

He has skills. But they’re never going to be optimized due to these things. Either we spend a couple years correcting it all to get to his potential ceiling, or we leave the ceiling where it is and patch a game together around him to at least meet that ceiling.

  63. Don’t know for sure yet, but I think there’s a chance Texas 3* OLB Jermarcus White could be visiting this week.
I’m also looking at about 4 JC DTs and a 2018 WR from the midwest (besides Nikia Jones)as potential visitors.

Then there were those 5 Florida guys I mentioned last weekend. I’ll find out if that is real or not(guessing not, but you never know)

It’s the last weekend before signing day, so anything could happen

    • Loving the emphasis on the recruiting linemen. Any word on Niti Lou? Would he be a mission kid like his cousin? If so, why not throw out an offer?

      Predictions on Delgado or Gray?

        • Got confirmation that the Smiths are not visiting. Looking at the current commits, we have 2 Freshman and 1 JC DT coming in with this class. Plus 2 on the roster. Not sure how many it would make sense to take beyond that(especially since we have 2 true freshman already in this class), since we are going to have a 3-4 front.
Kemon Jones was probably a backup plan in case Audette didn’t work out, but since Audette committed, and we told Smith we can’t take him, wouldn’t make sense to then extend an offer to Niti Liu. I don’t know if he is a mission kid either, but I do know he hasn’t been offered up to this point, and probably won’t be.

  64. I think Colletto will end up impressing everyone. He seems really smart and tough and while he may not have a big arm, he’s big, mobile, makes good decisions and throws an accurate, catchable ball (you may notice in the film his receivers are constantly catching the ball in stride). Strange that Angry doesn’t like him since these are many things he constantly looks for in a QB. To me, he looks like a real gamer and leader judging by the fact that he started one season at Washington’s highest level and absolutely dominated while rolling to the state title. Everyone is so hung up on the leg kick but to me that’s the only weakness in his game amongst a lot of strengths

    • The kid does have a big arm though. His first highlight on his JUCO huddle video is a ball in the air for 50 yards that hits the receiver in stride. I’m more concerned that he relies on arm strength too much and throws into coverage and tight spaces instead of going through his progressions.

      • And he has 4 years to play 3, which lends more time for development. Lindgren and niner have done good jobs with quarterbacks, I tend to trust their judgment.

That said, he hasn’t signed paperwork yet so I’m not getting too excited. I like that Thomson kid too, but if doesn’t visit I doubt it’ll happen.

    • Seems to me that when a player has had a degree of success with an unorthodox style there is a danger in trying to make significant changes.

I trust JS and Lindgren to be good coaches and evaluators, it will be worth watching how they approach any changes to the kids mechanics. 4 to play 3 would normally mean a likely redshirt year for development, don’t think that is a sure thing in this case.

If he is signed, I’d bet he plays, leg-kick and all.

  65. Colletto’s posted stats show a completion % under 60% in high school and the limited action at AZ Western. 54% his senior year. Tells me he won’t be accurate in college. And the fact that he wasn’t even the starter at the JC is troubling. Why take a backup JC qb?

There’s nothing in his film or stats that say he has an upside.

        • Lol that’s funny.. We have to dig that up I was the one saying he will run in the 4.4’s tho. I had the comment below cued up much earlier but forgot to post #toldyall

          • Pretty sure I said that as well…or I at least noted how fast he is and NFL teams will be intrigued with the size/speed combo.

If he runs a 4.4 at the combine he might go in the 3rd round.

        • Nigel Burton was on TV talking about Nall the other night.

Said he’s one of Nalls biggest fans. Can’t believe how many people still continue to doubt him. Says Nall is just one of those guys who dominates at every level, and each time he moves he starts from the bottom with no one believing he can do it. He expects Nall to be a very good RB for whoever has the foresight to draft him.

The underdog you love to see succeed.

          • That’s exactly right. Every level they doubt him, and every year he has to prove himself again. It’s almost every game. People are just waiting for him to one day show he’s the big slow white dude so they can stereotype him, and he never does. He’s a freak.

          • Fumble problem was overstated and injuries primarily due to stupid coaches fucking with his body asking him to play a terrible position for his height.

          • Leach thought he was the best back in the Pac-12. I don’t know why Nall would have any loyalty to OSU. Still, I guess we’ll always have “Nall in the squall.”

          • Sounds a lot like a certain QB who is soon to don the orange and black. Love seeing these overachievers prove the doubters wrong.

          • Since when has Nall been an underdog at anything? Sure, Riley wanted to make him a LB and put bad weight on him. But that was changed quickly, and he’s been playing RB ever since. He is very good at anything involving him touching the ball. But he really sucks at the intangibles that are necessary for being a whole RB, not just a ball carrier.

The fumble issue isn’t overstated. It’s precisely what it is. And nobody has brought up longevity.

And his two second mesh point early in the season was the eighth wonder of the world.

          • That’s what I was thinking….the 6’2″ 235 lb underdog with the speed?!?

Under appreciated maybe, receiving only one PAC offer(?), but not an underdog.

  66. Here is Lindgren saying he wants a strong leader at QB, and making the point that being a talented runner is “a bonus”:

“I think the mental makeup, just being somebody that has a moxie about the way they carry themselves, is a good leader, doing the right things off the field and can kind of set the standard for the offense, I think that’s a huge thing,” Lindgren said.
“But I want a guy who can throw the football accurately, has good touch and if you can find someone who can run the ball and can do some things when things break down with their legs, then that’s a bonus.”

  67. men’s hoops team to play at the paradise jam next winter

The Oregon State men’s basketball team will compete at the 2018 U.S Virgin Islands Paradise Jam, tournament directors announced Wednesday.

The 19th annual event begins Friday, Nov. 16 and continues through Monday, Nov. 19 and will be held at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas.

The tournament field includes Eastern Kentucky, Kansas State, Kennesaw State, Missouri, Northern Iowa, Old Dominion, Oregon State and Penn.

    • He’s a guy I mentioned as getting a school visit around the time they also started talking with Colletto. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was visiting soon along with some other PWO candidates.
Don’t know exactly what the tweet indicates, but it’s a sign of something….his lips are sealed according to the tweet.

I actually dont know why people didnt like his film. I like him better than Moran back when they were both supposed to be part of the 2016 class. Good size, not great at any 1 thing but a solid all around player who can use his legs when needed but doesn’t rely on running.
