  1. I hope that one of the many “Jack impostors” will stop by and say a few words or maybe as a poster once speculated, it was actually Jack arguing with himself!

According to Jack, I was part of a far reaching racist conspiracy that led back to the Obama White House because I maintained that Craig Robinson was awful with the X’s and O’s.

    • You were a racist because you recognized Robinson was a bad coach. I’m a bircher because I recognize the government is inflating the currency rapidly and so I want gold. More stories, please!

      • I remember him being pissed because someone in here kept suggesting CR was coach because of some ‘deal’ Obama worked out with the school.

  2. He told me to “fuck off” once because I told him he just liked being a contrarian.

Also, his record of 125,281 down votes will not be surpassed in our lifetime.

  3. Wish Jack would have taken me up on my sparing invite…. Ha ha. Now I’m bored that I don’t have anyone to banter WITH.
    Rest easy, JAX! GO BEAVS!

  4. Question about online obituaries: are they always printed online?
I know Jack’s name, and he hasn’t died according to the Google machine. But I don’t know if every death gets put online. I’d imagine Google crawls printed newspapers for these and archives everything, but maybe I’m wrong.

At this point, since he hasn’t replied to my email, I am assume he did in fact die. He’d usually respond fairly quickly.

  5. He may be unable to read and/or respond. My mom has Parkinsons. 4th stage to date. If she was an angrybeav, she would need someone to read and type a response if they could understand her critical whispers. He may well be alive thus no obit. Mind willing body unable.

      • Jack seemed to have plenty of piss and vinegar as fuel for the muse, so odd to up and disappear. If he has passed, regards to the family unless it is a situation like the above obituaries. In which case…congratulations and best of futures.

    • Its weird he just disappeared all of sudden. One minute its shitty music and diatribes about everything, to silence. I could personally do without it, but he did have some gems. It’s gotten slow around here because of it, not that it’s good or bad but I’m use to seeing 20-30 new posts when I check in in the morning knowing full well Jack has found the keys to his liquor cabinet again. It’s just odd.

  6. Jack’s last post 4/6 in response to WFO

    “What people in charge?

Are you saying McMahon will have zero to do with this league? If that’s the case, then it has a chance to survive.”

Kind of weird his last words…

    WFO killed him.

          • Mueller had his chance and wrote his own report and knew what Barr’s summary would say before it was released. The report has been released. No collusion.

          • If you read the report, you’ll see:

            1. Russia definitely interfered with the election (pretty hilarious that the United States is getting indignant that a foreign power meddled in our election, given our history LMAO). But in any case, still not cool.

            2. Insufficient evidence of conspiracy (legal term) basically aka “collusion” as the popularized media term:
“…while the investigation identified numerous links between individuals with ties to the Russian government and individuals associated with the Trump Campaign, the evidence was not sufficient to support criminal charges… Further, the evidence was not sufficient to to charge that any member of the Trump Campaign conspired with representatives of the Russian government to interfere in the 2016 election.” – Mueller Report page 9

That little tidbit will go unmentioned in most popular media, for obvious reasons.

The report shows very shady things occurred in 2016, but also insufficient evidence of conspiracy/collusion. Plenty of slime, plenty of meddling, but insufficient evidence of conspiracy/collusion by its own admission. This is why people are moving the goalpost and banging the obstruction drum now. I can’t help but be reminded somewhat of the Clinton years and the political mess that was.

Can we get rid of all the D.C. politicians, like when someone has crap in their intestines and the doctor gives you an enema to flush it all out and start over? I’m starting to think we could elect via lottery and get results at least as good as we get now from Congress and the White House.

          • Mueller did write his own report. It’s called the Mueller report, informally. He said he couldn’t rule out collusion, yet couldn’t prove it in the legal framework of that charge. It’s kind of like in baseball when a call stands rather than a call is overturned.

          • First part: Huh, interesting, angry.
Second part: “He said he couldn’t rule out collusion, yet couldn’t prove it in the legal framework of that charge.” That sounds like guilty until proven innocent. “Well, I mean, I can’t PROVE it, but I can’t DISPROVE it either…. so guilty!”

          • BTW, I just looked it up, and the “Mueller Report” and “Report on the Investigation into Russian Interference in the 2016 Presidential Election” are one and the same. If there’s another “Mueller Report”, I don’t believe we’ve seen it. But I could be wrong.

          • That sounds like guilty until proven innocent

I think my baseball analogy was good. An ump will say “call stands” rather than “call overturned” if he sees an iffy call but doesn’t have enough to overrule it. Mueller saw something, but didn’t have enough to prove it legally. The legal burden is high. He didn’t have it. It’s not saying Trump is guilty, just that he isn’t innocent. Again, that’s the same as a “call stands” in sports.

          • On one hand, I suspect if we had multi-year investigations into every presidential administration, we’d find a lot of “not guilty” but “not innocent”.

On the other hand, a major part of the legal system is that you are innocent until you are proven guilty. So I guess everyone is legally innocent.

How much people care about the law vs. their own suspicions is entirely colored by self-interest. We all know that if Russia had helped Hillary Clinton get elected instead of Donald Trump, Democrats and Republicans would be making the same arguments, just in reverse. It’s all a hypocritical farce.

          • A small point I think is heavily overlooked:

There’s a distinct difference between the presumption of innocence granted to you in court vs. the catchall, “innocent until proven guilty.”

Too much CSI, NCIS, Law & Order has conflated the two popularly, so when people hear a defendant isn’t charged or isn’t subsequently convicted successfully — “No Collusion!” — said defendant is therefore innocent of any wrongdoing.

This Administration likes it when this distinction isn’t kept in mind.

          • Anyone that reads the report and thinks Trump didn’t collide with Russia is too stupid to vote.

Collusion absolutely happened and is all over the report, Mueller couldn’t prove conspiracy (a crime) but absolutely proved collusion (not a crime but also unethical and treacherous from a Presidential nominee IMO)

Claiming otherwise is denying facts which is what Trump’s cult does.

          • And it is NOT a hypocritical farce, if Hillary (or any candidate) colluded with Russia (or any foreign power) I’d want them impeached.

The claim of hypocrisy from Trump supporters is bullshit.

          • So you’re saying we have an unethical politician in office who was not proven to have committed a crime. In related news, water is still wet.

“Every nation gets the government it deserves.” – Joseph de Maistre

Looking at the corruption, dysfunction, division, and dying civility in this country, having culminated in the nomination of the least-liked major candidates in US history, that quote pops into my head. When I saw Clinton and Trump were the best leaders we could come up with, I knew we were screwed. And I don’t expect the next election to be any better.

“And it is NOT a hypocritical farce, if Hillary (or any candidate) colluded with Russia (or any foreign power) I’d want them impeached.”
Most people who claim that are full of bullshit. Everything ends up for the political tribe because, after all, the other side is EVIL and WAY WORSE!!!! The ends justify the means – isn’t that where activism has gone these days? What’s a little hypocrisy if it’s to fight injustice (as defined by oneself, of course? And people would always spin what they do to be a more righteous term than “hypocrisy.”) Maybe you’re different, I don’t know. Not counting on it, because these moral claims are easy to say in hypotheticals.

          • Bullshit

You do understand Mike Pence would be far more effective at getting stuff done right? If it was political every democrat would want Trump in office. When it comes to governing he is beyond incompetent which is good for democrats, it’s about him being an anti-American wannabe dictator piece of shit.

Him being a republican is irrelevant. But keep telling yourself it’s just tribalism if it helps you justify your defense of a criminal conman in the White House.

Oh and the Mueller report does prove he is a criminal. Maybe try reading it before claiming otherwise.

Trump is different, normalizing him is the end of America

          • Aaaand here we go. Getting upset, stating your personal conclusions as obvious undeniable fact as you try painting yourself as morally superior, and me inferior. I dub thee Jack Jr.

It might surprise you I did not vote for Trump, nor do I expect to next election, although I suppose that depends on who the Democrats put up. Politicians are always full of surprises.

But who really cares, internet arguments are stupid :)

          • Call me whatever name you want.
Deny Trump is who Trump is all you want.

You do so at your own peril

My opinion on Trump existed before he came down that stupid escalator and nothing he has done has been even remotely surprising to me. I also know where it is going if people keep normalizing him.

Call me crazy, call me Jack, I don’t give a shit. I’m right.

If you decide to vote for him (or just continue to think he’s just another politician) you get what you deserve.

          • Even asking that question (plus the TDS bullshit) demonstrates how clueless you are.

Believe whatever nonsense you want. Maybe you want to line in an autocratic dictatorship. If you do, Trump’s your guy.

Unlike you, I won’t throw childish insults at you. The facts support my position. You won’t be able to claim you weren’t worked when Trump refuses to leave office in 2021 or 2025.

          • Haven’t lost a single friendship

Do have a friendly bet with a Republican friend who agreed with me about Trump right up to Trump winning the election and suddenly decided Trump was the greatest though.

My opinion on Trump is unchanged so claiming I’m the one with TDS when the majority of Republicans even hated Trump and saw him as dangerous less than 3 years ago is the height of hypocrisy.

Just look at the evolution of Lyndsey Graham if you actually want to see a “syndrome” of some kind.

          • Honestly curious as to what Kate Brown did to get the Trump comparison. I don’t follow state politics as close as I should but have heard folks saying she is a liar and whatnot. Honestly curious as to what that is about or if it is just typical partisan insults and based on policy you disagree with.

        • She did nothing to get the comparison, Trump supporters only defense of Trump is “look what the other people do” which FYI is NOT a defense.

But yes, I voted for Brown. Knute was my repress (live in Bend) and I’ve had many conversations with him. He isn’t a bad guy (unlike Trump); I actually like him and think he believes in what he says but his policy positions suck for me and most Oregonians.

          • Trump supporters only defense of Trump is “look what the other people do” which FYI is NOT a defense.

What-about-isms. What about Obama! What about Clinton!
They are obsessed with both of those people.

  7. I learned of this site from a friend back in October of 2011. After a pitiful loss to ASU I assumed the character of “pettibonehead”, which is what my friends and I used to call good old coach Pettibone during his tenure. “pettibonehead” made the pitch that he was rested and ready to come back and return the Beavs to the “glory days” of winning two games a year.

Jack, of course, took the bait and we off and running for about a month long exchange. Jack, in his real persona simply did not have enough material to duel with a fictional material. He claimed he “.pwnd” pettiibonehead. Most of the subsequent comments pointed out that just the opposite was true and that he was getting embarrassed on a daily basis.

After awhile we settled into the usual relationship that he had with the rest of us.. and I pretty much ignored or skimmed his voluminous postings.

  8. As a long time lurker and rare contributor, I will say that I mostly tuned Jack out over the last few years because I was sick of politics mixing with my OSU updates, but it would be a bummer if something bad happened to him. He was passionate about the Beavs and had some decent insight to the teams….and occasionally music.

  9. I often checked the timestamp on Jack’s posts, for me those posted between midnight and 3 am were usually better ignored.

He once called me to task over a news item about a (proven justified) police shooting. I’d made a “walk a mile in the cops shoes” type comment and Jack equated his weekend assignment to Shore Patrol duty as evidence of his authority on all things cop related.

He also mentioned that his wife wouldn’t allow him to smoke dope as long as the kids were living in the house.

I appreciated many of his basketball comments, his music vids?…just a few.

Given his views on spiritual matters, I’m not sure R.I.P. is in order. I do though, hope his family has good memories.

    • Are we sure he isn’t in Gitmo after making one too many “Idiot Boy” and “Dumbshit Donald“comments? The Secret Service does take that shit seriously .

  10. In the St.Paul paper. Significant baseball news if true…..
Look for former Stillwater pitcher-outfielder Drew Gilbert, who last week was named Minnesota Mr. Baseball, to de-commit from Oregon State due to a coaching staff change within the Beavers. The Gophers could be among considerations.

Meanwhile, teammate pitcher Will Frisch remains committed to Oregon State and already is in Corvallis preparing for his freshman year.

  11. Just had a terrible thought. What if the reason we haven’t seen an obit is because Jack hasn’t been found and he’s still in his house, which is full of hungry housecats with nobody to feed them?

I think I’ll just keep telling myself Jack is sitting out from AB for the offseason instead.

  12. In 2017, Ryan Nall scored 10 TD’s for 60 points, WSU had 60 total rushing yards, (just for you BeavGopher), Minnesota averaged 60 yards per kickoff against the Beavs, Beavers had 60 punts total for the season, AP had 12 carries for 60 yards and 1 TD against USC, Jordan Villamin had 5 receptions for 60 yards against ASU, Thomas Tyner had 60 All-Purpose yards against Washington, Jordan Villamin had 60 All-Purpose yards against ASU….

It’s 60 days until kickoff against Okie State!

  13. I haven’t posted for months either. Just letting you know I’m OK.

    ~GWH

PS: Thank you Jack for helping Make Angrybeavs Great Again!

      • People love to fight about the Mueller report. Almost as entertaining as the debate over what the definition of “sexual relations” is (or the word “is” for that matter) from the 90’s.

Partisan-fueled hatred is quite a spectacle.

        • Clinton lies under oath, he committed a crime. He was impeached for it.

Trump obstructed justice (and is a rapist, money launderer, and collider with enemies of America). Why shouldn’t Trump be impeached for his crimes?

          • And despite people’s refusal to accept reality, hating Trump isn’t partisan. Anyone that loves America, democracy, and the checks and balances this country was built on will hate Trump if they just pay attention but I get it, it’s easier to just normalize him and stick your head in the sand.

          • So MSNBC is still going with the collusion/traitor to America shtick? I guess when you are so invested in a narrative, it’s hard to let go of it. Thanks for the update, I was wondering about this.

          • Obstruction of justice is = to resisting arrest when police have nothing. Drumpf obstructed our bullshit investigation. There was a dossier full of lies but we can try and impeach him because of those lies we made up fully know they were lies.

          • Just adorable in your voice to remain ignorant.

I’m done with this. Not worth my time. Keep cheering for dear leader. Love how he is legitimizing North Korea as a nuclear power, brilliant move. Can’t wait to see how this “deal” works out.

Trump cult members would be hilarious is they weren’t so dangerously ignorant.

          • I am guessing you were one of the antifa thugs in a ski mask beating on innocent civilians with tire a iron. Might be a good idea for you to head back to your uncles basement before you are identified.

          • Trump is mean. I don’t like Trump. Waaaaaaaaa! Waaaaaaaa! Waaaaaaa!

Trump said something mean. I need to go to my safe space.

          • Hypothetical, maybe some people aren’t Trump supporters as you suggest. They’re just tired of the daily cry fest from the left? Nah. Couldn’t be that.

            It’s been over 2-1/2 years.

Come down from your cross, use the wood to build a bridge and get over it.

It must really suck to be you

          • Okay, whatever you say good buddy. Just hilarious.

And no, it does not suck to be me.

Since you throw out a “hypothetical”

It’s also “hypothetically” possible that Trump is an incompetent anti-American conman who has no business in the White House and it doesn’t matter if it’s been 2.5 years or not.

And I know, I’m just another wacky leftist.

I mean I voted for Greg Walden in 2000, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2014 (he didn’t get my vote in 2016 because he supports Trump), and I voted for Dudley in 2010. Hell, I’m a prime Republican voter, born and raised in rural Oregon, 40 years old, white, male, upper middle class….I should be a lay up for a quality Republican candidate. But yeah, I’m just another wacky leftist.

Keep the comedy coming. The cognitive dissonance of Trump’s cult is so impressive it is entertaining.

          • “Trump cult”?

Newsflash crybaby. I didn’t vote for him either. As many others you erroneously label.

Nothing but hyperbole and straw man arguments from your pie hole.

            Whine on loser.

          • Ah, more ad hominem attacks. So cute.

Honestly couldn’t care less who you voted for, you clearly defend him now. Which is far worse than voting for him in 2016, at least then you could have claimed you didn’t know how incompetent and anti-American he was.

Oh well, at least he’s getting his cool show on the 4th, wannabe dictators love those. Happy 4th

          • Okay, I’m not the one that created a username just to continue to discuss the topic

But sure, you’re simply tired of me crying about it. Sure, you are.

I can back up every claim I make about Trump with Trump’s own words and Trump’s own actions.

All you got is “I’m gonna create a user name and call this guy a snowflake after he already said he was done discussing the topic, it will be great. I’ll own that lib so good and then I’ll blame him for continuing the conversation. It’s gonna be great, so excited to be that guy. Everyone is gonna love me for my brilliance”

Good for you, you owned the lib. You must be so proud of yourself

          • Cool story bro. Your opinions aren’t facts. And no one here cares.

Im sorry your dad didn’t love you enough

          • My dad died when I was 5, what’s your excuse?

And no, all my opinions about Trump are backed up by facts.

            Facts about Trump

Trump believes Putin over American intelligence
Trump has said Jeffrey Epstein (convicted sex traffickers) is a “great guy” and hung out at his parties (but I’m sure he never had sex with any of the girls right?)
Trump gave North Korea a propaganda win and has footed NOTHING from North Korea
Trump left the Iran deal against the advice of General Mattis (among others) and now Iran is building bombs and we are in the brink of war
Trump left the TPP (a multilateral deal that would hurt China) and is instead hurting American farmers with his trade war
Trump just this week missed the deadline to begin printing papers for a Constitutionally mandated Census in 2020 because he is mad SCOTUS ruled against him

I could keep listing examples all day but I know, all of it is fake news.

Again, congrats on owning the lib. It’s a proud day for you I am sure.

          • Sorry Trump called Epstein a “terrific guy”

I’m sure you were gonna call me out for getting the quote wrong thereby discrediting the whole point so I’ll correct it now.

And yes Bill Clinton also hung with him just to avoid they talking point too

Still obviously fake news of course

  14. A few months ago we were talking about ways to make Reser more useful as a facility and I recommended finding ways to attract concerts to the venue, to add a little extra revenue for the school. People scoffed and said Corvallis wouldn’t be able to attract enough of an audience to make it worthwhile.

This past weekend, Autzen hosted Garth Brooks, and look at the size of the crowd. Seemed to work out ok in the thriving metropolis of Eugene. OSU should be able to pull off something like this too, especially being 2 hours closer to portland, where much of the Autzen audience came from.

  15. The upcoming long holiday weekend feels like a good candidate for teams/entities to self report bad news in hope that it gets lost in the news cycle by the time weekend is over.
Any guesses as to what/who the big story will involve?
Will it be Trump related? Will it be NCAA related? Both? It’s bound to happen in some way, shape or form.

It was a similar 4 day weekend when the Will Lyles news first broke, I believe.

  16. I figured with Jack no longer posting, the conversation would trend towards less politics and more OSU athletics. Seems to have had the opposite effect.
    Miss you Jack!

    • I’ll NEVER bring up politics (I’d prefer to push angry’s buttons on OSU related topics) but if others decide to bring it up I will respond.

        • I know this but sometimes the absurdity is just too much and I have to respond.

The absurd belief that hatred of Trump is simply partisan politics is where I really lose it. Pretty much every respected Republican know how dangerous Trump is and have decided to lie and cover for him in order to not get primaries from the right. It’s pathetic.

This country needs more Justin Amash’s.

      • There is no law that says you have to respond. All it takes is one person to decide they don’t have to get the last word in and it ends.

        • I’m well aware of this. Everyone choosing to not respond is exactly what Trump wants, he wants to be normalized and not responding to bullshit claims he and his supporters make does just that. You cNt normalize Trump. But thank you for your input.

          • Also I wouldn’t have responded if the guy wasn’t a coward who chose to create a new account name just to call me a snowflake.

If you’re gonna insult someone at least have the balls to do it under your standard name.

          • Only if Trump supporters choose to post their propaganda on this site first.

            Question for you

Why are you so bothered by the “whacky liberal” responding but don’t seem to mind the “Trump cult” member choosing to spread propaganda here in the first place?

I’m not the one that brought Trump or politics up. Maybe you should hold Trump’s cult to the same standard you plan to hold the whacky liberal too.

            Just a thought.

          • Cool….

Texasbeav-“no collusion” nonsense-Straight from Trump’s twitter not based in reality.

gobeavs92- “you must be an antifa thug comment-Straight from Trump’s twitter strategy not based in reality

blackbeavs- “Obstruction of justice is = to resisting arrest when police have nothing. Drumpf obstructed our bullshit investigation. There was a dossier full of lies but we can try and impeach him because of those lies we made up fully know they were lies.”-Straight from Trump’s twitter account not based in reality

Trumpisameani-“Trump said something mean. I need to go to my safe space.” I made no comment even reflective of rather Trump is mean or not, straight from the Trump twitter playbook of attacking the person not the message.

That is 4 Trump cult comments right there. But I know, I know, I’ve just a snowflake. No need to repeat more of that ridiculous narrative.

Here is one thing I have not seen anywhere in this thread, who has defended Trump on the merits of something he has actually done? No one, just ad hominem attacks directed at me and repeating Trump’s twitter greatest hits.

To each their own, either way, Trump is in incompetent trash President who has no business still having the job and the entire GOP is now made up of cowards so unwilling to even stand by the things they’ve personally said about Donald Trump (see: Lyndsey Graham and Ted Cruz) with the exception of the last principled elected Republican on the planet (apparently) in Justin Amash.

          • Right. I went back through and re-read all these posts again.

You’re really turning this into something it wasn’t/isn’t. Your hatred for one person clouds your ability to think rationally. But that’s just my opinion.

            Take a chill pill already.

            Happy Independence Day angrybeavs degenerates!

          • You are entitled to that opinion. I think the average American’s desire to live their life and desire to believe everything is fine has led Americans to massively under react to what is happening right now.

I am okay if you think I am irrational. That doesn’t make me wrong.

Look, I hope I am wrong but when Trump refuses to accept the result in 2020 if he loses and declares a national emergency based on voter fraud don’t say you weren’t warned. And if he wins in 2020, that will simply delay the inevitable until 2024. Trump ain’t leaving voluntarily, he can’t. He will be indicted as soon as he does.

All the people that want to believe Barr, Trump, and Foxnews are free to do so but you are being lied to by all 3 of them. That does not mean I think the Democrats, MSNBC, and CNN are telling you the truth either. People need to become active researchers to find the truth or our little experiment in Liberalism (big L for a reason that Trump is so dumb he doesn’t even realize is different than liberalism) is going to end.

Democrats are cowards who won’t do the right thing.
MSNBC and CNN (despite what Trump tells you) want nothing more than Trump to remain in office (profits baby) and yeah many Americans are idiots who pay no attention.

Take the Democratic debate, Kamala Harris is now the favorite because she attacked Biden for a position he held in the 1970’s that was held by 91% of African Americans at the time and history has proven was the correct position but the attack still worked because American’s don’t want to do their own research.

It sucks and maybe I have blown it out of proportion in this thread but I am not blowing the danger that Trumpism presents out of proportion. This is a guy that sides with autocratic dictators (Iran excluded for reasons I haven’t quite figured out yet) over leaders of the free world. He isn’t doing that for the benefit of Americans.

Agree on the Happy 4th comment. And I truly hope you are right and I am just irrational. So far I’ve basically predicted every move he’s made so I yeah I am worried because what he has done so far is disastrous for this country in the long term.

          • Yep, it’s called paying attention, having basic critical thinking skills, and actually loving America.

And I’m proud to have it. But keep your head in the sand, it’s your right as an American to be ignorant and unpatriotic so go for it.

          • Trump’s America where a credible rape charge against the sitting President (which makes nearly 2 dozen sexual assault claims) doesn’t even make front page news because ‘that’s just Trump, we already know he is a rapist’. What a time to be an American.

  17. UW Huskies unveiled their new uniforms today: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D-fHPT5WwAAXTUT.jpg:large

They look so much better than the garbage Nike produces. They have gotten back to the darker purple and more classic look with a modern twist. I really like the look they came up with for them. Well done Adidas. When does the Nike contract end again?

EDIT: According to this site, the contract expires in 2026. 7 more years until it expires. https://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Closing-Bell/2016/11/11/Oregon-State.aspx

Here’s an article from 2018 saying this summer is the start of their 10 year $119 Million contract. they will get $11.9 Million a year compared to the 2.7 or so we get from Nike…hmmmm…..
    https://www.forbes.com/sites/demetriusbell/2018/04/10/university-of-washington-huskies-adidas-119-million-2019/#3b49ca2345dd

      • I don’t really care who makes the uniforms but OSU should be picking the design not Nike, Adidas, it Under Armor.

I’m willing to bet that the reason the UW uniforms look good and traditional is the school told Adidas what they wanted and Adidas delivered. OSU seems to let Nike make all the design decisions (or the people at OSU are incompetent) until that changes it won’t matter who the manufacturer is.

    • So what about my post do you not like:

the fact that it’s me, beavers4life?

      I brought up UW’s uniforms?

Brought up how they are making more than us?

Or the fact that I’m wishing we had Adidas over Nike?

Please let me know so I can keep annoying you guys with material others have had opinions on, including Angry.

    • I am a terrorist according to you so I assume you think I belong in prison?

At least you don’t hide your name. I respect that. Calling someone you disagree with a terrorist, don’t respect that as much.

Enjoy your 4th, your dear leader is getting his military parade. That must be exciting news to you. So patriotic.

        • Yeah, you call me a terrorist and then try to play the victim. Solid technique. You may not have voted for him but you sure do seem intent on defending the guy against any criticism.

You are right about 1 thing, I am intolerant of Trump and anyone that still supports/defends despite 2.5 years of evidence of how incompetent he is at the job. Proudly intolerant of both.

Enjoy your dear leaders (whom you did not vote for) patriotic (nationalistic?) parade. Happy 4th

          • We have officially found another dolt we can windup just like Jack.

angrybeavs now returns to its regularly scheduled programming.

          • Hey, if you wanna believe I’m stupid feel free. Insults are all you got because the facts don’t support your decision to defend Trump. So let the insults fly if it makes you feel better about yourself.

          • Vocabulary lesson for you:

Inference: a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning.

The evidence you have present leads to a reasonable conclusion that you support Trump. Especially when you called me an “antifa thug”

That is something I’m sure pops up on Trump’s twitter feed at least once a week. If you don’t want to be accused of supporting Trump; maybe you shouldn’t sound like you are writing Sean Hannity’s opening segment.

          • Dude. You’re doing it again.

Anti-Antifa = Pro Trump is an illogical conclusion.

Trust me on this one. There’s plenty of folks that dislike both. Even in Portland.

          • It’s not being against Antifa that led to the inference, it’s the use of Antifa as an attack on me.

            Context is key.

And I don’t really give two shits if you actively support Trump or just passively accept Trump. Both are equally damaging to the country.

          • Long past time to move on so I’m gonna leave this with 2 last thoughts that anyone who is honest with themselves knows is true.

The electoral college was designed to prevent an unqualified incompetent conman from becoming President

But if it failed in their time

The founding fathers would have impeached Trump minutes after he took the oath of office (emoluments clause amongst other reasons).

And good night and good bye to this thread

          • Not as damaging as you (and others) irrationally labeling people.

You’re free to think and feel as you wish. But once you insult a person, they’ve already tuned you out and will never see your side of an argument.

            Advice is always free.

  18. Who remembers jack’s “I’m more Corvallis than you, whippersnapper” diatribe? Member of the coop since 1972? He accused me of having multiple handles, before that was even true. Prophetic really. “Energized” for 72 straight hours after the election: “say hello to my lil friend!” I think I’ll try to look up some old material before I came across angrybeavs; be like watching Seinfeld reruns.

  19. My favorite quote in this thread so far: “If you’re going to insult someone at least have the balls to do it under your standard name”. LOL. That takes huge balls.

    • “I can’t come to bed right now honey. Someone is wrong on the internet”

Jesus tits Helen. Some people take shit waaaaaaaay too seriously.

  20. Luke Heimlich got the start on the mound Tuesday. He aimed to break his .500 record as he looked for his second straight win. However, he struggled against the Diablos Rojos as he lasted five innings allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out four on his way to suffering his sixth loss of the season. Heimlich is now 5-6 on the year with a 5.62 ERA…

    From LMTonline.

  21. Trump is absolute shit, but what I fear (as a moderate) is the direction of the Democratic party.
It leaves me in a tough position. Not sure what I’m going to do yet. I voted Trump last time and regret it. I can’t see myself voting for any of the radicals the Dems are talking up.

    • Single payer healthcare seems pretty moderate to me. Probably the end result will be lowering the Medicare eligibility age.

    • I would vote Independent party if people were smart enough to realize you DON’T have to vote Republican or Democrat, or even vote for your own party. Just because you fall into one party, doesn’t mean you HAVE to vote that party. I’ve voted Independent before, but it gets so little votes, it’s like wasting a vote if you don’t vote for Republican; since none of the Democratic nominees fall into my beliefs(nor do All Republicans either). I’m a Moderately conservative Republican. Less Taxes, but more I am democrat when it comes to the education system.

      • “Democrat when it comes to education system”

Oregon’s Democrat education system is an abject failure in every measurable way.

          • The fact that democrats have controlled state government for so long.

When school districts were much, much smaller, the locally elected school board had a better chance of influencing what was taught/emphasized and who taught it; not anymore. Thus, school administrators are virtually unaccountable to parents and are now influenced/controlled by policies put in place by the (democrat) state government.

    • I’m socially liberal/indifferent and fiscally conservative. One reason I absolutely hate Trump is he has blown up the deficit (on pace for all time record spending) even more, despite correctly calling the US economy a huge bubble on the campaign trail. He’s also begging for lower rates despite correctly calling out Obama’s job “success” on the FED’s low rates. Now he’s begging for the same things. Which, of course, are awful for society. Candidate Trump knew we needed higher rates; President Trump is pleading for lower rates. Pathetic.

      • I remember when Bill Clinton + Congress had us at a budget SURPLUS. Mind-blowing to even think about these days. Think of the hundreds of billions of dollars we squander every year paying interest to countries that hate us instead of spending it to improve the lives of Americans. Some debt can be necessary for investment/growth, but it’s gotten waaaaay out of hand. I blame Reagan and “deficits don’t matter” for opening the floodgates.

        • Yeah Reagan fucked up everything. He’s Republican’s wet dream, too.

With Clinton that was just the budget not the national debt. National Debt went up under him, too.

          • Reagan did some good things, too, but I fear opening the deficit floodgates will end up ruining the country. It’s like that first hit of an addictive drug that leads to eventual self-destruction. I suppose later politicians also deserve blame, as do we voters, since we didn’t exactly go to rehab… but yeah.

Btw I still can’t figure out what a “bircher” is. Googled it and keep getting recipes.

          • What good did Reagan do?

He also started the consumer debt cycle…look at the spike in individual debt starting with him.

          • The USSR was collapsing under its own weight, Reagan was there though so I guess he gets the credit.

As for something “good” he did.

I’d argue the immigration deal was good policy. They failed to properly implement the most important part of the deal which was punishing businesses for hiring undocumented immigrants. Until you punish businesses for illegal hiring (real punishments) no other immigration policy will ever work.

          • I agree. Was just typing that. Socialist, oil driven economies (Russia, Venezuela) always collapse under their own lack of diversity. By 1990 Russia had completely collapsed simply to being too oil dependent. That process started decades earlier.

Reagan duped Gorbachev a bit. And he was there.

    • Genuine curious it’s what do you find so “radical” about the Democrats?

Affordable higher education? Even conservatives supported that till Reagan
Universal health care? Again, conservatives supported that until Obama and even the founding fathers believed in it (see: English poor laws, it’s not in the Constitution because our founders lived in a society where taking care of the poor was already a cultural expectation)
Climate change regulations? Republicans ran on these policies right up through John McCain

Forget the Trump conversation, What is do radical about those positions? Or what other positions are so radical?

Warren and Sanders are in the fringes for sure but Biden, Buttigieg, and Harris (and all the guys with no chance) are political moderates

      • What I find radical is the amount of debt (inflation) needed to fund their ideas.
UBI, Student loan forgiveness, etc. All huge debt/inflationary. A broke Country can’t do these things. If we had a surplus, sure, do all that. The opportunity for America to do those things passed long ago. Instead we decided to bail out banks, Wall St, etc. Those decisions limit what we can do now (without going into hyperinflation). Dems put more risk on a hyperinflation. Though, that is happening no matter the party. (R) it will just happen slightly slower.

        • Those ideas are not supported by Biden, Buttigieg, Harris, or about 18 of the other 20 candidates.

You’re letting the spin stereotype all Democrats based on what Warren and Sanders say.

          • But the radical democrats pundits (David Pakman crowd) are lambasting and cannibalizing the mainstream candidates as “not the voice of the modern Democratic Party”. I’d vote for Biden. He’s super boring, but that’s what I want right now. I have Trump exhaustion. Boring sounds refreshing. No way I vote for AOC, Bernie, etc. Trump would kill Biden, though, in a debate.

          • About the only costly item all Democrats agree on is universal health insurance but most have no interest in banning private insurance, they simply want to offer a public option in the exchanges. And honestly I’d done correctly (bi-partisan which won’t happen until McConnell is gone) that can be done in a fiscally sane manner.

Some support cost free tuition to community college and trade schools which you can make a strong argument that such a program will pay for itself by getting more people into the skilled workforce where we badly need more workers.

Infrastructure is another example where spending could explode but that is both needed and even Trump (says he) supports it so it’ll happen or won’t happen regardless of who is President in 2020.

          • AOC is not a candidate, Sanders isn’t gonna be the nominee.

Warren has a shot but that is very doubtful especially if she can’t knock Sanders out early.

The moderate wing of the party is winning. Most Democrats don’t vote for twitter likes. It’s gonna be Biden or Harris.

Harris would have would wipe the floor with in a debate (but likely still lose). I doubt Trump beats Biden in a debate but even if he did Biden still beats Trump in a landslide in my opinion.

It’s probably gonna be Harris though and while she’ll be painted as a radical the only thing truly radical about her is being a woman and a minority. Sadly I think both allow Trump to beat her which is why I am praying for Biden.

Truly wish Michael Bennet could get some traction, if he could break out he’d win in a landslide too. I honestly think he’ll be Harris’s VP candidate when she gets the nomination.

          • Instead of trying to overhaul health care, why don’t we look for cheaper options?

For instance, passing regulations that ban high fructose corn syrup, and limiting the amount of sugar and sodium in our fast food?

Our insurance premiums would drop like a rock.

          • Fixing healthcare is easy. Get rid of all insurance except catastrophe insurance (rare, thus super cheap).
Doctors would have to lower costs for all routine procedures. It’s also important to make the consumer care about price — right now they don’t shop for the best price because workplace insurance pays. This naturally results in rising prices.

          • While I understand the economic argument you are trying to make about making health care cheaper where is the evidence any of that will work?

On the other hand like it or not (believe everyone in Canada and Europe hates their health care and waits months for services or not) at the end of the day the health outcomes in countries with universal insurance are better for citizens and the costs to society are dramatically lower.

I’d rather take what we already have (Medicaid, Medicare, VA, employer based, Obamacare exchanges) and build on it. Let people 50 and older (or their employers) buy into Medicare which would help make that program more solvent by adding healthier people to the program, allow people to keep employer based care if they is what they and their employer want, expand Medicaid to cover more of the bottom (use a small tax on large businesses that don’t pay living wages or health care which will encourage them to do both), and offer a public option (I’d set up as a non-profit corporation built only on “seed” money from taxpayers) and let them sell plans on the Obamacare exchanges with the same deal private insurance companies get and without a profit motive.

This can be done in a fiscally responsible way if both republicans and democrats would actually sit down and try to solve problems instead of bowing to their corporate donors and trying to win a news cycle.

          • To Atomos,

While I agree in theory I can’t get behind government telling people what they can and cannot consume. And while I could see an argument for a “sin” tax on such items such a tax would target the poorest of society which I can’t support.

But that is why health education and healthy eating programs are so important. Even more important though is getting people jobs that pay them enough to afford to eat healthy.

          • where is the evidence any of that will work?

That was the US’ model before WW2 when government put wage restrictions in order to recruit soldiers. Companies got around that by offering fringe benefits. That’s how insurance got tied to work. Healthcare was extremely cheap before that, and it was negotiated between the patient and doctor. That’s the winning model. Though, I do think adding catastrophe insurance as a safeguard is probably wise. The good thing about that insurance is it’s extremely cheap since it’s very rare to get major disease.

          • That is an oversimplification or the system prior to WW2.

Consider why health insurance became something people wanted from their job, the system was far from perfect pre-WW2.

I’m out for the day but this is the political conversation and like and we as a nation need more of.

          • It would work like a charm because every person I’ve talked to who has come to the US from a different country remarks how sweet and salty our food is. You’d think that people would “smuggle” foods in from elsewhere, but if such regulations existed, there would be no “elsewhere”, as was the case when the city of Philadelphia tried to enforce a soda tax.

In theory, government shouldn’t interfere with our lives unless it is an overwhelming positive benefit for everyone; for instance, the banning of lead paint and tetraethyllead. This is almost the exact same thing, particularly when it comes to health insurance. Excessive sugar and salt do not contribute any positive effects for human health.

        • Bailing out the banks was the right, though nauseating, thing to do. Failing to impose meaningful regulations in the wake of the ordeal was the problem.

          • No way.
Once you do that you’re not operating within Capitalism. You’re also spending limited resources on dead entities (they are still insolvent), which is exactly why we can’t afford to invest in things that actually help society. When resources are limited, you can’t waste them. This is why we’re resorting to a printing press and homes, stocks, food, tuition, etc etc have all doubled. A printing press is an exponentially doubling machine. It’s about to get a lot worse. All because bad banks weren’t allowed to fail. You let them all fail, new banks sprout up, and mark assets to market and you have an entirely different (healthy) economy. Now we’re left with bubble economics.

          • Explain how bailing out failure works within a framework of Capitalism.
That is the exact opposite of how Capitalism works. It eliminates bad businesses. That’s what it tried to do in 2008.

          • The bailouts are complicated. The reality is that had they not been bailed out we probably would have lived through or still be living through the 2nd Great Depression so I do think it was a necessary evil.

The real problem is how we allowed banks to get so big that we couldn’t allow them to fail when they defraud citizens by giving them loans they knew couldn’t be paid back. No business should ever be too big to fail which is a larger issue. And one that definitely isn’t gonna be solved as long as Citizen’s United remains the law of the land.

And I do agree with angry about bubble economies but honestly think bubble economies are likely the price you pay for living in a society with elections (and without term limits for most offices which for the record I am not sure is a solution either because experience matters too) because no one is looking past the next election cycle. Bubble economics might just be the price we pay to live in a representative democracy.

          • We’ve only delayed the 2nd Great Depression.
We printed money to bail out banks. That doesn’t solve what was trying to correct in ’08. Those forces are still under the surface being glossed over by nominal gains (zero real gains, when inflation adjusted) in assets. There are 13 trillion dollars in negative yielding bonds outstanding. Think about that. Any gain is nominal only. Your house didn’t double, your dollar (more than) halved.

The biggest winner in this environment is the smallest loser. That’s what inflation does.

The depressionary forces are still lurking under the surface. We will fight them with hyperinflation, unfortunately. Depression is better than hyperinflation. Both are defaults, so it’s pick your poison. Deflation/depression is a better one. It’s just more visible than inflation (the hidden tax) so citizens tend to choose it, and therefore politicians go that route.

          • All that may be true but delaying a depression at least gives us a chance to find a real solution (not saying we will but it gives us a chance).

          • The solution, though, is wiping out the malinvestment. The very thing ’08 and any depression tries to do (’29 wiped out the malinvestment and speculation). That’s the job of recession and depression. It’s a lot like trying to prevent forest fires. Humans like to prevent them to avoid short-term pain, but preventing them just makes them much larger when they inevitably go off.

But yeah, you can argue it gives us a chance to solve an unbalanced math equation. That equation became mathematically insolvent in the mid 2000s under Bush 2, though. And the equation becomes more unbalanced every day. So I don’t find the argument compelling. Trump just sped it up with tax cuts. That lost revenue will be made up with the printing press.

    • Angry, keep in mind whatever may be left of the Republican Party will still exist in Congress. This round of judge nominations will have lasting effects as well.

Both would check, should a radical Democrat in your view, be the nominee.

        • The only direct Trump comment I will make today.

Why are you more okay with a radical right wing candidate (which Trump undoubtedly is) then a radical left wing candidate?

Even just sticking to economic policies of each.

They will both bankrupt the nation, at least with a radical left wing candidate we go bankrupt trying to help people instead of further enriching those that are already wealthy.

          • Well we are already insolvent, so IMO that is technically bankrupt. The math sealed that fate under Bush II.

At this point it’s who creates hyperinflation slower. I think (R) will, but I’m not sure. Trump is begging for rate cuts and is quoted as saying he doesn’t care about the debt since he won’t be here. He’s also on pace for the most spending of any President in history. So, I already said I’m not voting Trump again for that reason alone. I’d vote for Biden. He’s boring. I need that (Trump fatigue). I doubt he’d be fiscally responsible, though. But, that’s why I just decided to ignore all that and buy gold. Jack called me a Bircher for this. I view it as common sense.

          • One last comment (and this is meant more as a joke at my own expense not to start another debate) I guess that is the bright side to my position on Trump, he absolutely plans to still be there. The only real debate (that I have no interest in actually debating) is who will stop him from staying….

          • I’d go for a boring candidate with a sane plan to give us a shot at fixing the economy. Boring is good. I like boring for myself. Drama is only entertaining from a distance.

          • Politics should be boring. Getting things done should involve compromise. Both are broken right now. Sadly the Senate majority leader proudly calls himself the “grim reaper of legislation” and as long as that remains the position of the guy that decides what the Senate votes on I see nothing changing regardless of who the President is.

  22. In other news, I note that the Chronicle of Higher Education has posted the position of President at OSU. The announcement contains the usual stuff, but I thought the readers of this blog would appreciate these sections.

“OSU is distinguished by several very highly ranked programs and colleges, such as its programs in forestry, oceanography and robotics. As a member of the Pac-12 Conference, OSU offers seven men’s and 10 women’s NCAA Division I sports.”

    and later . . .

“The president should be skilled at managing a highly complex, multi-site institution; possess a deep knowledge and understanding of a mission-focused, distinctive land-grant university; and demonstrate capability in overseeing an operating budget in excess of $1.3 billion. These skills must include the ability to oversee the opportunities and complexities involved in managing a successful NCAA Division I athletics program.”

Deadline for application is September 12th. Interestingly, the search firm, Witt/Kieffer, does not exclusively focus on higher ed recruitment, but executive search more generally.

  23. Mike Parker tweets:
“As of July 1, I am now an OSU employee with full benefits. I’m thankful to Scott Barnes and to Learfield/IMG for finding a creative way to bring it about, for my daughter’s love, and to many in Beaver Nation for your kindness and support. I can never thank you all enough.”

  24. Is youngorst Jack, post stroke? A stroke really affected my grandpa’s cognitive ability, so maybe…

    Queue onslaught of defensive comments…

  25. Occasional mention is made here regarding the writers covering sports in our area. There are some good ones; Eggers, Lundeberg and, less connected to the Beavs, Austin Meek.

I’ve suggested you check him out before. Meek is now leaving Jacks old territory and penned a nice farewell article. Maybe worth your time as we wait for the big story Nicebeaver predicted would come over the holiday.

    https://www.registerguard.com/sports/20190704/austin-meek-thanks-for-stories-we-shared

    • I’m in Bend also-home of touristas! I have a subscription to the Athletic-great writers, good fantasy sports articles, long form writing. SI and ESPN websites have really diminished in the last year or so.

  26. I don’t want to give the Orelive too much time but they actually pay hacks to masquerade as ducks and beavers fans to stir the pot to get more clicks on their articles. Pretty desperate and pathetic but when you have the likes of crapzano and Nemec as employees, there’s nothing those guys won’t stoop to in order to get traffic and clicks. What a sleezy bunch at OLive.

  27. Regarding the economy, this is exactly what is going on:
    https://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/crackup-boom.asp

What is unfortunate is people view credit expansion as real growth. By traditional metrics, we’re in the late stages of this crack up boom. We might be able to squeeze another five years with ever more radical monetary policy (i.e. more credit/debt), but I’m skeptical that will work since average wages do not support any major asset or commodity prices. More credit/debt will only make that price issue worse, thus accelerating a decline.

    Wildcards: technology, wage growth.

Short of those two things saving the economy, we’re looking at something much worse than ’29 or ’08. The math went insolvent under Bush II. It’s amazing we got this far. But it highlights that confidence/psychology play a huge part, too. To some degree the “share economy” (people willing to accept a lower quality of life) has also contributed to delaying the inevitable. Again, it’s just pick your poison of a hyperinflation or a massive deflation. Both are defaults. A bond haircut/deflation is the more honorable default. They’re trying for the former but might get the latter via asset prices/cost of living that are simply too high.

    • It is a shell game. I graduated in 2005 and started following patrick.net skipped buying a house and scored. The next democrat promise will be erase all credit. Hell maybe you the businesses that unleashed horrible credit to people should be forgiven and they lose?

    • Costs that are increasing at an unsustainable rate and are major centers of inefficiency in our economy: college and healthcare.

We need to somehow accelerate the social acceptance of non-traditional undergraduate level studies so graduating students have less/no debt and society stops having to bear the cost of unpayable student loans. We’ve taken multiple generations’ wealth and dumped it into worthless, largely unproductive money pits. The technology is there to deliver this level of education at a fraction of the cost of a traditional university experience. The status quo is an incredibly inefficient way of training workers, and completely out of alignment with the needs of the labor market. The sooner we come up with better credentialing for hiring, the better.

More remote work will be a boon for society, as well. It’s more efficient than commuting and can lead to greater productivity and/or improved mental health. Can you imagine if everyone took the time they spent commuting to and from work and took a walk instead?

      • You forgot housing as one of the major cost increases. I believe over 60% of income is now being used on housing as homelessness explodes and multiple people cram into 1br apartments (lower quality of life that is not factored into any govt stat). Again, due to the Federal Reserve having interest rates too low.

        • This is another cost increase that could be partially addressed with more remote work and technology. Figure out how to sell your house without the ridiculous costs currently attached and move somewhere “less desirable” where prices aren’t as inflated. Find remote work and an apartment in a “less desirable” place that you can more easily afford.

Don’t forget that the housing stock is aging, as well, meaning people already in houses face mounting costs to maintain them.

Of course “housing affordability” was only ever an illusion in the first place. It’s always been a game of kick the can as the goverment helped GI’s buy houses, then mortgage terms were extended, then interest rates went near zero. It’s just catching up with us now.

  28. At some point the horrid business decision should cost people their businesses. The government should not bail out by devaluing the dollar. Would be a great in person talk . At some point the house of cards falls. But I think it will happen in every other country before here

  29. Luke got back up to .500 today, with the win he is now 6-6.
    Went 6.1 innings, 107 pitches, 10 hits, 3 ER, 5 K’s and zero bb.
Gave up a 3 run HR in the first, appeared to settle down after that.
    ERA now 5.51

  30. Angry,
Did anyone consider that Jack might have been arrested? Perhaps you could check his name against recent penal records? I always assumed his late Friday and Saturday night rantings were symptoms of alcohol abuse (JACK Daniels?). Perhaps he was a drunk who parked his car in his neighbor’s living room one too many times? Since the Death investigation was unsuccessful I’m wondering if other explanations for his absence should be explored.

  31. Eggers up with a “summer reading list”.

Starts off with a brief look at “University of Nike: How Corporate Cash Bought American Higher Education” By Joshua Hunt.
I had to look up the publishing date (Oct. 2018), all the significant stuff has probably already been said about Hunt’s findings.

In reviewing another book, he calls it a “great half book” and says, “Much like Corvallis’ Reser Stadium — a great half stadium…”
Is that a swipe at OSU, or an honest compliment?

  32. Disparate comments:

    1) Jack could’ve been messing with angrybeavs all along. Perhaps he didn’t live in Eugene at all or do any of the things he posted about – family, doing all the cooking, service record; some of his so-called insights could’ve come from anywhere. He did, however, mention going to Beavs home games from time-to-time. I think I recall (and I’ve been reading this blog for far too long) his having a sister in Montana.

    2) I don’t get RIP. How is it you are ‘resting’ when you’re stone-cold dead in a pile of ashes or locked up in a box, under six-feet (or so) of sod? And if you are a heaven-believer, you’re supposed to be
wafting about in the atmosphere, so that doesn’t seem like resting either. As for peace – what are the options?

    • As I’ve previously mentioned on a couple of occasions, jack was off quite a bit, therefore, I think jack died from auto erotic asphyxiation. It’s probably too embarrassing to post in the local newspaper in Eugene although most duck fans are often into extreme self indulgence and gratification. I’m not suggesting Jack was a Duck fan, but by the tone of his comments it was clear he was into the self indulgence and gratification thing. Hang in there Jack…..

    • I think(and hope) Jack is still alive, and he is just sitting out the offseason to see what everybody says about him when they think he’s deceased.

      • I’m glad I’m not the only “insensitive asshole” who has noticed this phenomenon. The Oregonian has run articles ad naseum on the team. I could understand it more if they came out of nowhere as an underdog and won their first title, but they’ve been strong and sometimes dominant for almost 30 years now. This hype feels manufactured and forced.

        • Maybe because we’re just not used to a lot of hype about women’s sports? I played full court basketball for about 40 years (yeah, OK, I wasn’t out on the fast break in the last few, perhaps several, years). I learned to enjoy women’s basketball when we lived in Knoxville and could walk over to the Lady Vols games under Pat Summit. Is it men’s basketball? Hell no. Is it good and entertaining basketball? Hell yes. I suspect the same holds for soccer and other women’s sports.

          • 4-5 years ago, you couldn’t have paid me to watch WBB. Since that time, I’ve gone to several OSU WBB games at Gill and the P12 Tourney in Seattle. Gill for WBB is such a great environment. I’ve gotten to the point where I rarely watch men’s CBB now but look forward to WBB every year now. It’s weird, but the WBB play a cleaner game in my opinion. Sure, it’s played below the rim but I think the fundamentals are better and the women shoot better from the perimeter IMO. The women are highly skilled and you really appreciate their skill level sitting down on the floor and watching the games at Gill.

        • Those chicks got smoked by an U15 boys soccer team from Dallas a few weeks before the world cup started. Same thing happend to the Australian team, they lost by double digits to an u18 boys national team. Fully grown women cant even beat children in the same sport.

          • re: wbb Great Swammi – Does “playing below the rim” mean their feet rarely leave the floor? I pay sports attention only to the Beavs and appreciate the turn-around story with Rueck and wbb (may it be repeated w Jonathan Smith). However, there is the stickum-on-the-shoe-bottoms syndrome in wbb. Destiny Slocum and Mikayla elevate more than most and I assume that’s why Mikayala rebounds so well.

          • Neat, the same thing would happen if the OSU women played a top traveling basketball team full of boys.

Yeah, men (and even teenagers) are faster and stronger than most adult woman. That doesn’t mean when women play other women it can’t be entertaining.

I’ve seen these losses you speak of as evidence as to why the women shouldn’t get equal pay and when it comes to the NWSL (is that correct?) vs MLS or the WNBA vs the NBA the men should clearly be earning more but when it comes to the national teams (in soccer at least) at the end of the day USA soccer sells the men and women as 1 package and the women were getting the ratings and attention (the men’s team was playing in the Gold Cup at the same time, how many even noticed?) so since that is the case I do think the pay for being on either national team should be equal.

And hype or not, the local sports bar in Bend had to open before 7 am for the final that started at 8 am and every seat was full plus standing room only prior to 7:15 am whereas the bar was empty for the Gold Cup final/Timbers games that were on the same day in the evening when more people would normally be at the bar. Like it or not, lots of Americans found the Women’s World Cup far more interesting/compelling than the other sports going on at the same time.

And that is all that really matters.

          • When I was in high school our girls basketball team was pretty good, ranked in the top 10 all season in 3A (now 4A). They played a practice game against the 8th grade boys basketball team and the boys won 80-something to 30-something.

          • I didnt say people didnt find it entertaining. The fact still remains if its played by women it’s a lesser sport, financially and skill level wise. It doesnt mean I dont enjoy watching beaver Wbb, but I really have no interest in watching if I dont have some sort of connection.
And as for equal pay, the women signed a contract to play for US soccer same as the men. The women make 8% of overall revenue from that contract, the men make 6%. The top 5 players from both men and womens make the same amount of money. Its everyone after those top 5 that dont get as much money. BUT the mens team over the last 2 world cups has made 1.2 billion, were as the women have only made 400+ million over their last 2 world cups. If the women want more money they need to get more or better sponsors and actually fill stadiums in the early rounds. But in the end for most people womens sports are not compelling.

          • I’d like to see those numbers, how did the USA men make 1.2 billion in the last 2 World Cups when they didn’t even qualify in 2018?

I do get the revenue argument but it isn’t the only factor for me. Performance should matter too.

Since 1991 when the Women’s World Cup came into existence the USA women’s team has made all 8, won 4, has appeared in all 6 Olympics winning 4, and has won 8 out of 9 Gold Cups.

The men since that time has never finished better than 8th in a World Cup, failed to even qualify in 2018 but has won 6 of the 9 Gold Cups so within CONCACAF they had a similar level of dominance but on the world stage it falls apart.

Now, I freely admit the men’s game is deeper (by a ton) but results still matter to me. It is not an issue I will be championing nor will it effect my vote if Congress does or does not require equal pay but I do think that given their success on the world stage should be rewarded with equal pay.

Let’s be honest the USA men aren’t driving World Cup revenue in the same way the USA women are. Basically the USA men benefit from men’s soccer being more popular worldwide and not because the USA men are great. The USA women can’t force people in other countries to invest in their women’s teams. A lot of what you argue leads to their lower pay is out of their control. All they can do is go out and win games and they have so I say pay them.

Just my opinion and I understand the arguments to the contrary.

          • And just as a side note, I am not talking prize money that should be tournament specific and definitely based on revenue earned but just the base pay each team gets from USA soccer. .

Since 2015 (according to Forbes) both teams have similar revenue from the games controlled by USA soccer so that should be considered.

          • I know the men failed to make the last one, maybe I should have said in world cup years. One distinction you missing from the Forbes article is that they start in 2015….the men played in the 2014 world cup. If you add that one year it’s more then the women made in 2 full world cup cycles. Basically forbes is giving number for 2 womens world cup cycles vs one that the men didnt even play in, and they’re still almost the same amount of money.
The fact is the women signed a contract, contracts matter. This isn’t the first time they have complained about their pay either, so why are they continuing to sign these contracts know full well what they are going to make? It’s not like the US has to field a team.
The prize money is really shit, the money is in sponsorships. So I reality both teams are working on commission and they sign contracts knowing that. And the womens contract is better then the mens.

    • People pretend to care about gymnastics, too.
I mean it’s cool if we do well in those sports and win titles just to boost our title total, but honestly who cares. It’s like all of Oregons track titles. Who cares about those? 3 sports matter. And baseball is debatable. It does carry more prestige as it gets more coverage.

  33. The nurses and doctors at Jack’s facility prolly took away his inter web privileges after
Jack tried to harm himself after Mueller let him down. The good news is there should be some great water colors coming out in a few years. The art critics will praise the rage in his work. Hope he doesn’t make a shiv of a #2 brush.

  34. Maybe this news about Jack’s favorite three (or was it four?) time quitter will cause him to break his silence:

Mike Riley will not return to Oregon State as an in-house consultant to head coach Jonathan Smith and his staff for the 2019 season.
… He decided that his role as consultant at OSU — which meant primarily scouting opposing offenses for D-coordinator Tim Tibesar each week and then sitting in on O-coordinator Brian Lindgren’s meetings during game week — were too extensive when combined with his XFL duties.

Hmmmm…… “He decided”.….gotta hope JS is the decider, and that he is just giving his ol’ coach a chance to save face.

More in the piece, confirming baseball moves already posted here by beavergopher (who should henceforth be referred to as “rodentia duplicita”)

    • I watched LH pitch in a game in Corvallis only once and in a few televised games. Was his pitching motion always that contorted? As good as he was/is, his pitching motion always seemed to me to be relaxed and easy. In the photos I’ve seen for Los Tecolotes, it looks over-contorted and painful.

    • Nice work, indeed!
“Entering with a stretch where he allowed five-plus earned runs in four of his previous seven outings to up his ERA to 5.51, Heimlich responded with one of the best performances of his young professional career Saturday. Heimlich tied career bests in innings pitched (7.0) as well as hits (4) and earned runs allowed (0) to toss his second shutout in 16 starts. His seven strikeouts gave him 88 in 2019, which ranks fourth in the Mexican Baseball League.”

    • this is from last week:
“Rutschman is currently working out at the Orioles’ spring training complex in Sarasota, Fla., and will soon make his professional debut with the Gulf Coast League Orioles. He is scheduled to make the next leap to Short Season-A Aberdeen sometime this season.”
