General Complaints

171

While we wait and hope for (a) a new DB coach, (b) reaffirmation from commits, (c) any good news, there's a lot to complain about. This is an area to do that.

Hoops struggles, recruiting collapse, coach/recruit poaching, etc. All fair game. Biggest issue I have right now: Riley not hiring someone ASAP. Dude has had over a week now to address the issue and save his best class. Meanwhile, not a peep.

Tough times. Let it out.

  1. Read a quote from Riley last week that he was going to hold off on the DB hiring until after the signing period, so not surprising we don’t have a replacement yet. Not a dirext quote, but he said something along the lines of “we’ll sortof take a look at that I guess….there’s probably not a good time to lose a coach, but I usually have some sort of replacements in mind..maybe I guess possibly we’ll take a look at that after the signing period perhaps.”

    Again, not a direct quote.

  2. Sheeeeit….

Its an effed up Beaver world. Next the baseball team will lose…

On Riley, I guess the loss of Heyward was unforseen? That’s really bad timing, but it exactly fits the way the Riley world is functioning these days.

Craig Robinson is giving some hope, but his inability to coach close games into wins, is disturbing. But he is not a coach with a great deal of experience, so maybe he can grow into the job.

    Sheeeeit…..

    • My thought is he should have $950K worth of experience cuz that’s what that frigging Bobby D is paying him. Let me take that back, Bobby D arranged for him to be paid that much and SOMEBODY ELSE IS PAYING IT.

    • The only redemption we get this year is when we go to the store and return our beer bottles. At least I have a pickup load of them.

  3. I’m stuck with this cold that won’t go away, while my 4-month old has the cold too and will not sleep a wink. Since I’m at home TRYING to feel better, I’m scouring the Internet getting my fill of OSU recruiting news. I’ll be most disappointed if Caleb Smith chooses another school, especially since he originally gave his word to come to Corvallis, along with his dad being an Alum. I’m also jealous/bummed at UW’s ability to shake up coaching with exiciting, young talent. Riley always insists that continuity within a system is the key, but the more I see programs immediately win with new coaches, the more I think that is a cop-out.

  4. So you believe that MR should rush a hire? The Heyward switch wasn’t as huge a loss… bottom line kids want to come here or not. And hiring a guy to save this class isn’t a long term strategy. You want to hire a guy that’s going to help you in the next class and the next class after that.

    • Kind of. The whole point of recruiting is to convince kids why they DO want to come to Corvallis, not wait for them to decide on their own what to do. Not too many people on Riley’s staff can effectively do that (as is evidenced by our recruiting classes through the years) which is why it is a big deal when we lose a guy who actually can convince kids that they want to play for Oregon State.

      • 2-4 star recruits, 9-3 star kids and 3-2 star kids in 4 years of recruiting…Is that much better than what the rest of the coaching staff did? I’d go back and check on it.. because it isn’t.

    • My question is who’s the LB coach and why the heck did he try to trip him? Injured? Didn’t want to get injured? Stupid? Oh wait I know who the LB coach is and I gotta tell you OSU is getting their money’s worth with that dude!

  5. I think the most annoying thing that I see is from people like Ted Miller and a lot of the regular posters on the ESPN Pac 12 blog who constantly say things like “Yeah but remember where you guys USED to be,” as if we should be thankful for being mediocre and not flat out horrible (well, before this year anyways). What makes it even more annoying is that this is the attitude that I genuinely believe BDC has when it comes to our athletic department. Is he happy with 3-9? Of course not. But would he be fine with 6-6 or 7-5? Sure. Just as long as we’re not the worst.

    • LOL … There is a perfect answer to those who offer the cop-out of pointing out our winless streak. THAT’S WHERE RILEY IS AGAIN!!

We are now as bad as we were, much of the time in that winless streak. Are they trying to say that because Riley took us to some bowl games, that he no longer has to have winning seasons???? That’s just moronic…sorry.

If we continued to go to low tier bowl games, it is in fact a valid argument that you are now better off than in the old days. BUT WE DONT!! 3 WINS DOESNT EVEN COME CLOSE!

When you cant even beat a Sac State, its time to get a new coach. The pac 12 was weak last year, and we only manage 3 wins. I want a new coach!

  6. Hopeful,
You might be on the money, as we strive for mediocrity. The money is now there with the new TV deal so we can spend as much as anybody else on coaches. An earlier post pointed out that Cal, Stanford, and UW are upgrading their stadiums, but I also heard that WSU rolled the dice and approved more stadium upgrades before the TV deal was final. Moos knows what to do as he helped build Oregon up to be one of the best. We need to replace BDC or we will be last in the Pac-12 north within 2 years.

    • We were basically last in 2011. 3-9 overall, vs WSU 4-8 overall. Yes, we won one more conference game, but I think WSU had a better team. Especially if you factor in the Sac State loss.

  7. Shaq Thompson a great DB just said that his recruitment is wide open now that Lupoi has left Cal and gone to Washington. When does MR get on this guy?

  8. the basketball teams inability to win close games in a wide open conference. what’s so frustrating is that they still have an oppurtunity to have a strong season, but i have a feeling they haven’t lost their last gut busting game. at this point i’d prefer watching the 08-09 team’s 45-point-a-game princeton offense than this pickup game stuff.

  9. I saved myself a couple of hundred bucks after the WSU game when I didn’t buy the PAC-12 package, I saved myself a lot of grief when I decided to skip watching basketball last weekend, I think I’ll go into hibernation until baseball starts and then the football recruiting disaster will be over too.

  10. Its interesting that all you regular posters are taking a much more hostile tone regarding the overall program and MR than I took when originally discovering this site last fall.

It looks like the sarcasm I leveled at the program took some time to mature. It was obvious to me my the end of September that the football program was heading for another extended period of irrelevance. JB

So once more a golden oldie : “I can restore the three win glory years! Call me!” OH..thats fun.

PS: Jason… I’m glad you and Jack have patched things up. I hate conflict.

  11. I wonder which Pace12 Offensive Coordinator Sark will poach? I would love it if it was UOs. You know, just to piss off the entire North…or maybe Stanford’s.

    • I was actually dreaming that he would attempt to poach Danny. Danny can recruit, especially Oklahoma (could help expand UW’s recruiting ground,) and an OC under Sark is just a figure because it is Sark’s offense anyways…

    • Regarding Sark….I was listening to a national show today and they were praising Sark, saying the he understands that even after a winning season this year that keeping the status quo is unacceptable. UW fans still have the expectation that their football program should be competitive with the Ducks and Trojans and Sark has to push to get quality coaches and talented players to reach that benchmark. Only if Riley could take note.

    • Of course, this would happen. Common sense would be to call the guy as soon as possible to check-in. You get one call a week… (unless it is a “dead period” right now).

      • Transfers to OSU! ” Coach Riley does not care if you suck at football. He and Coach Langsdorf only call 6 plays every game and my dad said he would help me memorize them. I’ve had enough winning. Getting the snot beat out of me behind a O-line of walk-ons will help prepare me for tough realities of the real world,” said Montana.

    • If you were going to extend to this to it’s logical “Luck O” The Beavs” conclusion, our heros would meet San Diego St in a minor bowl game next year and get picked apart by Katz and Coach Rocky Long.

  12. “OG Isaac Seumalo was at USC this weekend. He said it was cool, but not enough to get him to change his loyalty.” This per the “community blogger” on Olive: blog.oregonlive.com/beavers/2012/01/monday_morning_recruiting_repo.html

May be grasping at straws here.
I would think if Isaac had made up his mind to be a Beav that the announcement would come quickly, OTOH if he decides USC then it might take a few days.
This blogger also has Tonga being less than a sure thing.

      • The more time passes the more likely it is he goes to USC.

My reasoning is that turning down USC would be a no brainer in the sense that he already committed to the Beavs; OTOH if he decides on USC he will likely have a lot of talking to do with his family and possibly Riley/Cav.
Unless he was shocked by the neighborhood around USC and doesn’t place a big difference in the value of a degree from the two places for his future I am really concerned. The more time passes the more I think this isn’t going to work out well.

      • I don’t think an announcement will come at all until signing day. I think an announcement would make his commitment look like it had waivered. If it is true that he has been trying to get others to commit, that wouldn’t be good. I would think we will hear little tidbits like above from guys that ask the question, but I don’t at all think that no news is bad news.

        • Riley should press him. Uncertainty may cause some of the other guys wavering to bail. Can take on a herd mentality. This looks bad to the other recruits, especially with the guy’s dad being a coach. We need him to make an immediate strong endorsement from a PR standpoint.

          • I’m confused on what you think Riley should press him on. Seumalo has committed and has never wavered from that commitment. By him visiting USC it has created some speculation on the message boards. But he has been pretty upfront from the beginning that he was still a solid OS commit. Nothing that is said has changed that. And obviously, Riley is not like those of us that are waiting for the next bit of news to come out, he knows exactly what Seumalo is planning to do. If Seumalo is planning to back out of his commitment, then I for one do not want him coming out with an announcement.

      • you have to think he knows what a difficult place he would put his father in if he went to SC. On the other hand, this situation just goes to show the incipient desperation infusing the OSU outlook these days, at least amongst fans. I mean, how often can we count on a coach of ours having a son who is a five star recruit?

        • The trick is, the whole situation puts HIM in a difficult spot. The way OSU is playing these days, and the way the coaches are performing, no 5 star should be going there. Think of him without a dad who is an OSU coach — should he go to OSU? You gotta be kidding.

He clearly has a shot to develop into a pro and make big money. He should go to a school where he can develop good habits and learn good technique. I cant see that as OSU right now.

          • Really?? There is nobody being developed by OSU to be a pro and make big money? To quote you – “you gotta be kidding”. There are certainly reasons that Seumalo would want to go to OS other than his dad being the coach.
            – It is close to home
            – Beavers have put a few OL in the NFL as of late
            – He will be in the mix immediately
            – Ever been to USC?? It is not in a nice area. Great school, but not nice area.
            – He has a relationship with Cav and has been learning technique

          • Check out the projections for the upcoming NFL draft…..ZERO from OSU.

Sure, there might be some who gain that status, like PAEA recently did, but he might have done better being frim a school that won most of their games, or better yet, went to a BCS bowl.

USC isnt in a nice area….big deal…. Looking at their roster, down thru the years, it doesnt look to have hurt their recruiting. We probably couldnt beat their second string.

..in the mix immediately….lol….in the mix of what? A bad line? A team that doesnt do the fundamentals well? Hey, he can learn lots of bad habits.

I totally expect him to be a Beaver, but only because its his home town, and he is the son of a coach. Otherwise, he should go elsewhere, if he were to do what is best for him just as a 5 star player.

          • I understand your frustration and I’m with you in being frustrated. But totally distorting reality is not a reasonable reaction to it. The reality is bad enough that it doesn’t need to be exaggerated. The reality is that OS had done a terrible job with recruiting 2 and 3 years ago which directly relates to the number of NFL projections. Last year it picked up and this year is looking solid if they can keep the class they have verbally committed.

Regardless of the current OL, Cav has a track record of being able to send guys to the league (not really the trait of bad habits). Isaac will be fighting for a starting spot his freshman year at OS, not likely at USC. He will get a tremendous amount of exposure over his 3 or 4 years here. Pro scouts are actually pretty good at seeing how talented a player is regardless of those around him.

USC is in a horrible place. That is the reality. A kid that has grown up in a small town like Corvallis may or may not care about that. But it is a legit topic for our coaches to use for some players.

          • Its your opinion that I am distorting reality. It looks very much to me like you are dwelling in the past, and not looking very hard at the CURRENT reality.

Yes, in the past, Cav got guys into the NFL. In the past he worked em hard on fundamentals. I guess we will see if that still pertains. I suggest that a head coach who no longer cares about winning will lead to players not even playing as hard as they might, no matter who is directly coaching them.

USC in a horrible place? LOL … it means nada. Check it out — they were under heavy sanctions in recent years and STILL had maybe the best team in the conference. 15 fewer scholarships to give out and STILL brought in the talent.

Yeah, you brag about what you can, and the small town, family environment may appeal to some. But I wonder if the “family environment” tells guys they wont have to work so hard if they go to OSU.

I agree that the pro scouts can find talent wherever it is — its the info age. But in development, I suspect that going up against better talent every day in practice will develop you better than going up against mediocre talent. That is, USC vs OSU. Surely that is one reason schools like USC can bring in 4 stars who know they will spend a lot of time on the bench.

  13. There are two very frustrating things about Riley’s lack of response to the loss of Heyward:

    1) Riley says there is “never a good time” to lose/change a coach. Wrong. You do it proactively on your timeline to maintain (e.g keep them) or change to improve your coaching staff. You could argue he means in the context of having someone poached from your coaching staff, but given that he makes NO changes proactively, I think its just another example of his embedded complacency;

    2) Riley, and Kirkpatrick at the GT, claim that Riley keeps a list of coaches in case this kind of thing happens. Okay, good. So why wait? Why not start calling that list and fill the position, and make an announcement ASAP, so that you hold onto needed CB’s like Wallace and Shelton. Far better to be able to say “I know you’re disappointed Heyward left, but I want you to talk to [ ], our incoming DB coach. He’s a former DB, has some great ideas and is a personable, approachable coach and great teacher. I think he’ll set your mind at ease and we certainly want to maintain your trust and commitment because we envision you helping us get to a Rose Bowl.” or something like that. You know?

All season Riley talked about his players’ need to “live in a vacuum,” right along with the coaching staff I guess.

    • On both 1 and 2, where have you been? Riley is absolutely complacent. it is now his middle name. He got the long term contract at an impoverished school…..he doesnt need to work anymore, just go thru the motions. Stand on the sidelines and smile as the team gets beat at home, by a bad program. Give totally uninspired comments to the press. Give the play calling over to Langsdorf and just stand there and smile when even the cheerleaders can predict the next play, and the team gets beat.

Until Riley is given some kind of anti-zombie drug, why would anything change?

  14. Paul Puker said that Heyward leaving would not have any impact on recruiting. So I guess McCarthy decommiting from Cal and going to UCLA, Thompson looking at Washington, and 3 SMU recruits following a coach to Washington State is no impact.
Puker has been in Riley’s pocket forever and will never write the truth.

  15. Angry

I was searching for something this morning and happened to wind up on a Wikipedia page on which there’s a big notice that they’re going to do a black out in order to protest SOPA and PIPA.

A little more searching lead me to the following write-up about SOPA on the Tom’s Hardware website.

If SOPA or PIPA (which is its Senate equivalent) passes will this impact you too?

    Mud

    Save Tom’s, Stop SOPA
    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/toms-hardware-sopa-Stop-Online-Piracy-Act-PROTECT-IP-Senate,14393.html

We’ve got no agenda beyond providing the best hardware news and reviews we can dig up. But here at Year’s end, there’s a subject we want to share with you that may come to affect how you experience us and the rest of the internet. It’s called SOPA, or the “Stop Online Piracy Act”, and it is headed through U.S. Congress with its sister bill PROTECT-IP in the Senate. SOPA threatens to fundamentally change the way information is presented online by placing massive restrictions on user-generated content like posts to forums, video uploads, podcasts or images. In a nutshell, here’s what the law would do:

Assign liability to site owners for everything users post, without consideration for whether or not the user posted without permission. Site owners could face jail time or heavy fines, and DNS blacklisting.

It would require web services like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter to monitor and aggressively filter everything all users upload.

It would deny site owners due process of law, by initiating a DNS blacklisting based solely on a good faith assertion by an individual copyright or intellectual property owner.

It would give the U.S. government the power to selectively censor the web using techniques similar to those used in China, Malaysia and Iran. The Great Firewall of China is an example of this type of embedded, infrastructural internet censorship.

As an example, imagine a user posts a video clip to the Tom’s Community of a step-by-step guide on how to set up water cooling on an overclocked i7 CPU. Playing in the background behind the voiceover is “Derezzed” by Daft Punk. The studio representing Daft Punk could issue a complaint, without being required to notify us or request a take-down. Tom’s Hardware would be liable and prosecuted solely on a good faith assertion of the copyright owner, without notification, with the site operators subject to possible jail time for not preventing the video from being posted. In short order, the http://www.tomshardware.com/ domain in the United States would no longer resolve to our servers and visitors attempting to come to Tom’s Hardware would be redirected to a “This site under review for piracy/copyright violations” page.

To conform to these new restrictions would mean that Tom’s Hardware would have to switch to a review/approval process for any and all new posts to our forums and articles. Our community team would have to approve every single news comment, every new thread, and every new response before it went live and filter them for potentially infringing material. Even so, we would still possibly be under threat from violations not caught – a user posting a paragraph from “Unix for Dummies” as an example or a snippet of software news from another website in excess of a certain summary threshold. That’s just here on Tom’s. The effect on sites like YouTube, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and the rest of the internet would be devastating, and progress and innovation would grind to a halt under the cumbersome new restrictions.

The intent of the legislation is to stop piracy, which isn’t affected in the least by this approach. The DNS censoring method is circumvented by navigating to the IP directly, and many have already installed Anti-SOPA browser extensions that do this automatically. Unfortunately the legislation in the House and Senate has a wide margin of bi-partisan support and looks likely to pass after the holidays. We strongly oppose the censorship of the internet and strongly encourage you to contact your Congressional Representatives and Senators to voice your opposition. Believe it or not, your Congress-critters do count the number of calls and emails they get on a particular issue, and most of the time only the people in their jurisdiction (read- you) can sway their opinion on something – so your action on this is important.

Please take a moment to contact your representative and tell them you oppose the PROTECT IP Act in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House. Here’s a link that can give you more information and provide you with contact info for your elected official. Your action on this matters.

  16. I’m still too frustrated with the football season to follow recruiting. Its up its down bring on signing day to find out where we really stand.

Now I had waited for basketball season to feel better about OSU athlelitics. This team has some talent can they turn it around- maybe. Starks needs to find his way to the bench more he’s the new Calvin Haynes, ball chucker, weak link on d. Nelson is a much better defender and much better shot selector and honesly I would be starting him.

Scrap the 1-3-1 its fun to watch sometimes, painful others, and overall not effective.

Post play- where is it? They need something they can go to early in the game before they are down 10 points and we are on our way to another loss. They need to attempt to establish some post presence- feed Collier the rock he’s has talent and has got to make himself a force down there. More Moreland, less Burton.

Defensive rotation. Pay attention. Quit leaving hot shooters open!

Got to have a sweep of the LA schools if we are going to be relavant in the PAC-12.

    • A lot of these suggestions might or might not help. What needs to happen is that our players need to play with urgency on every play, like they were doing in the non-con. They’re just lolly-gagging right now.

I’m not sure why you want more Moreland. Whenever he’s in, the lane shuts down. His spacing is terrible, and he just lets his defender clog the interior passing and driving lanes.

Burton is fine for what he can do when there aren’t 47 people in the lane, but I would rather see Collier. And Starks just needs help. Half the shots he takes go up because everyone else on the floor hesitates.

I know it won’t happen, but I want to see Jared, Ahmad, Berto, Devon and Angus start the game. And I want to see Jared jump for the tip to start against UCLA.

  17. Here’s what I’m hearing:

    Shelton and Wallace are gone.

Seumalo will be a Beav after he takes his second and final official visit this upcoming weekend.

Lawler is a Beav but won’t announce until signing day. (YAY!)

Caleb Smith is wishy-washy, but I think he’ll be a Beav.

Nate Iese will go to Cal.

I’ve heard that Tyler Hasty is on board. I’m really, really confused about Hasty’s recruitment. I thought last winter that he would be one of the most sought after CB’s on the West Coast. But he just disappeared on the recruiting front. He had an amazing senior year as a QB, leading Bellevue to the state championship and national recognition. But he was simply awesome from the defensive side… again. And now he’s hearing from schools who are limping in to the finish line? Us and Colorado?

I’ve been screaming about wanting Dalis Bruce. Not to knock Wallace or Shelton (who both have size advantages over Bruce), but I just see something in Dalis that tells me he will be an awesome CB. I could be totally wrong. I’m married, so I know it happens. But now I’m hearing our coaches are going back to the kid? I don’t see us getting a sniff. At least, I wouldn’t look our way… unless we’ve been on him for the duration. He will go to Cal if they would be smart enough to offer. But they’ve been idiots, and it looks like Colorado might lead UCLA for him.

And I’m hearing that Kentrell Brice didn’t like that Heyward left, but he seems tight with his friend, Noland, who loved Corvallis. Two things to note for both:
    1. Mizzou may be close to offering Noland, which might get Brice back in their fold.
    2. Mississippi called him and told him he was a priority for them while he was tripping here. And they intimated that they too might move for Noland as well.

    • Saw this on a Tennessee message board regarding Shelton (He sounds about as wishy washy as Mike Riley in a press conference):

      “From TOS… SIAP

“It was cool,” Shelton replied when asked how his trip to NU went overall. “Just taking the tour around campus was the highlight.”

How much academics are stressed at Nebraska, and the recently completed Student Life Center also stood out to Shelton.

“It’s a great school. I was especially impressed about the education. And I liked the student life program and how they help you with more than just football.”

They said that I would have a fair chance to play.”

Husker head coach Bo Pelini’s talk with him covered similar ground.

“He told me that he wanted me to come here and play, and that he could help get me into the NFL,” Shelton relayed about his talk with coach Pelini.

Shelton was asked if he was tempted to make a decision while he was in Lincoln?

“Kinda, yeah, no, I guess. I went back and forth.”

There is a slight chance that he’ll use his fourth official visit to go to Knoxville, but that is still up in the air.

“I might visit Tennessee… maybe. I’ll know if I’m going to visit them later on today.”

The California defensive back said that he was essentially down to three finalists, and that he could announce his college choice this coming week.

“I’m just looking at here and Oregon State and I guess that’s it. Oh, and Tennessee too. I forgot about them. I plan to make my decision on Wednesday.”

Shelton said that one school is clearly in the lead for him, but he did not want to divulge who it was at this time.”

    • I’m curious…where do you guys hear these things? You should start your own pay site, since your recruiting info is so much more timely….

  18. Wow, it is now official, Washington is now the most hated team in the conference and maybe the nation.
Cal hates them more than Stanford.
USC hated them because UW still thought they were good even when they were 0-12. Then UW beat them with Sark.
    Oregon has always hated them.
WSU would like to bury the arrogants!
Why can’t we get a little Beaver hate going against these vultures?

    • …because we are headed for where they recently were…0-12?

…because our coach is a milk toast and would never say a cross word about them?

…because we can’t blame a rat for leaving a sinking ship?

…because our head coach has retired, but still occupies the position?.

      Just speculating…

  19. If I were working for somebody else and I was grossing over $22K A WEEK and had medical, and all the other perks he’s getting AND had contract that’s good for years I’d have a big ‘ole shit eating grin on my face too.

  20. TE Caleb Smith to visit on unofficially this weekend. Cleveland Wallace says OS leads but that UW is right there and we are 1A and 1B.

Lawler’s in-home with Riley, he said he could see living there for 4 yrs. He will announce signing day, for the drama. Sounds promising.

Angie posted a Maui DE Pasoni Tasini will visit this weekend, not rated, and not much info on him.

  21. The only info I see on Tasini was from this last Summer, he talked about really wanting to go to BYU because he wants to take a mission after high school, and his parents want him to go there. He also said grades need to come up. Notes: was Athlete of the year, has state title in Discus, and is committed to playing the DE or DT. Sounds like a greyshirt or a flyer that he would still be interested in signing after his mission.

  22. OT:
Anyone here involved in the Cycle Oregon event taking place in September?
There are some Wisconsinites making the trip to the game that are avid cyclists and want to join in with any Beaver fans doing the same.
Click on my name to contact me through facebook.

  23. Just saw a new College Gameday commercial on ESPN. It had Chris Fowler and Desmond Howard and Benny was the main focus. Chris calls in to his insurance to see if destruction of their sports desk is covered by wild animals and specifically a Beaver. It then cuts to Benny eating and destroying the desk in the center of a basketball arena. To me this was far better than the Corso version which just used Benny’s head. I think they realized we got a less than great commercial the first time around and so gave us another.

Little things like this that associate Oregon St. with basketball in front of a national audience are good for us. Now we have to start winning more games. Two this week would probably get us more air time for this commercial.

  24. (Strongly rumored that) we got Dyllon Mafi. I believe we like him at MLB.

I think this actually happened 2-3 weeks ago, but I’ve just heard it from a 2nd source.

      • At MLB? I like him. He’s bulking up hard right now so if he ends up at 6’3″ – 235#/240# and keeps that 4.6 speed, he’s a solid rotation guy at MLB for 2 years and I think he challenges for a starting spot.

Not every signing is sexy, but I think he could be pretty good.

Wait…you’re not telling me you want Reuben Robinson as the back-up at MLB?

        • Well, when we all watched his film a while back it was clear he tackled way too high and was undisciplined. I guess those things can be taught, unlike speed, but he’s raw. Additionally, he has to add size and learn how to shed blocks/play MLB. Just seems like a reach. I’d rather get Chris Young. He’s more polished and sound.

Mafi is fast, though. I’ll give him that.

          • I’d rather have Chris Young as well but he’s an OLB prospect in my mind. I may be wrong, but I don’t see him manning the middle. That said, I wouldn’t be shocked if we got Chris Young as well.

Mafi looks like a solid MLB prospect to me. He’s an upgrade from Robinson and hopefully pushes Unga and makes him better. We were atrocious when Unga and Wilson got hurt last year so another option is welcome in my mind and since both will be seniors, I’d be all for bringing Mafi in now so we have a returner in 2013 if Skotte doesn’t pan out by that time.

    • I just want LB’s that more than anything want to knock the offensive guy’s head off. Period. Teach them technique once they arrive at OSU, but I’m sick of watching soft linebackers.

    • Well we lost a bunch to attrition and other events(5-6?) :( My guess is that we don’t have many grey shirts panning out to take those spots so we have some extra this year.

        • It’s saying Bishop is injury prone and has been for 2 years. He’s actually my Sister in Law’s cousin. Maybe I should check if she knows anything but she doesn’t really follow football at all.

          • No more b-ball! I thought he was going really light it up this year. Hope he can get healthy and have a big senior year. Seems like he should be a major red zone threat………….if we ever get there.

  25. Are going after any of the CAL guys.. man I would be pushing hard there. Did I see they gave the CAL guy 400k at UW.. wow.. He must be a really good recruiter.. and young too..

  26. Somebody may have mentioned this in another thread, sorry if already posted.

Coaches trying to get JC All American DT Tenny Palepoi to come on his final visit next weekend. (the 27th) He’s got a handful of offers, including us.

    • He has two weeks to fit in three visits… us, UW… and Utah State wants him back after they thought he wouldn’t make it and pulled their offer last fall (he was committed there). Went to BYU last week and left with an offer.

He’s supposed to get married this week and go to Hawai’i for his honeymoon. I suppose that’s on the back burner now?

I would say that whomever is left out of the visits won’t get him. And I think BYU leads right now.

It’s a good thing UW’s D-line coach isn’t all that good at recruiting.

  27. “Biggest issue I have right now: Riley not hiring someone ASAP. ”

Biggest issue I have right now is watching the basketball team implode _again_. Bobby D, admit you screwed the pooch, fire him, and hire somebody who can coach basketball, based more on that ability than who is brother-in-law is (and, psst, he’s a loser too).

    • 1. Why do you say Obama is a loser, what facts do you base that on?
      2. Robinson is a stud recruiter, which is mire than you can say about our last, oh, 100 coaches. His Xs-and-Os are hit-and-miss, but I’d rather give him some time and see if he can learn on-the-job, as opposed to firing him and hoping for a lucky hire.
      3. Do you really want BDC hiring another person? Because he’s been so good at it?

    • LOL … Obama wins a presidential election as a democrat in these days when republican governors can control their state’s elections….and you call him a loser? I wish he were coaching football.

As to Robinson, we get lucky and win the two OT games and we are 50-50. This is his first year with just his guys and so far has a winning record. Need to let it play out.

  28. To those that were poo poo’ing the LA boys offers Brice has picked up offers from Kansas St, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss (who he visits this weekend). Shelton visits UW this weekend (unconfirmed) but if it is true, so much for not going after the recruits who were committed to OS.

  29. From Biggins: Shelton on his Nebraska and OS trips, he WILL visit UW this weekend,

“I loved it there; it was a great trip,” Shelton said. “I can’t decide if it was my best trip or not, because I loved Oregon State, but I had a great time. There is so much football tradition at Nebraska, but I learned a lot about the academics as well. They have produced more academic All-Americans than anyone, and I never would have thought that.

    • Wow! Not a single word about how cool OSU… sorry… OS is because we’re a tier one Nike school. Instead, he raves about some two-tone Adidas school with a simple N on a plain white helmet.

      Boring!

      • Just lucky he was not there on a game day. He would be gone. Have two siblings with a couple degrees from there. Games in Lincoln are awesome. Every CFB fan should go to a game there. The fans are very passionate and knowledgeable. They are NICE to the visiting fans and love to talk football. Never have had to buy my own beer. When you have a true tradition, you don’t need a fashion show like the Quacks.
