Home Athletics Angrybeavs New Years Resolution

Angrybeavs New Years Resolution

323

I've been trying to think of a NYR that would improve the site. Today, while doing something completely unrelated to AB, I came across this quote:

Before you act, listen.
Before you react, think.
Before you spend, earn.
Before you criticize, wait.
Before you pray, forgive.
Before you quit, try.

– William Arthur Ward

I feel like "Dance like nobody is watching" should be on there. lol.

One thing I am guilty of is reacting too quickly or emotionally. This happens mostly in the comment area. If the Beavs get down 14-0 in the first quarter I would write things like "game over" out of frustration. Not sure that gives the site or me any credibility, so I'm going to try to bite my tongue  more often.

Talk about anything Beavs here! Nothing going on sports-wise until Sunday.

  1. Good stuff man. My sports related resolution is to not let my duck fan friends get me as pissed off. It’ll probably last until Sunday when the beavers give up three dunks in a row and coach rob never calls a timeout.

  2. During the football games, at least half the comments are silly knee-jerk responses.
Since I generally don’t visit the site during games, I read all the comments after the fact. That’s when the ridiculousness of these comments really show.
I think waiting before commenting or making a criticism is wise, and most of us could use that advice in our everyday life too, it’s just so easy to spout off when we’re all anonymous. Think about this, how many times has a comment been made here that would result in a direct, physical confrontation if it were made in person.

“Nothing going on sports-wise until Sunday.” Classic duck-hater comment. Love it!!!

  3. Love this post.

    Love the “duck hater” comment

I try to live by this motto: Do not text, email, or say anything to someone that you would not say out loud in front of them. Censor yourself.

That said I enjoy the critical and sometimes cynical analysis provided by most on this site.

    Happy new year

    • I’m sorry, but I didn’t comment after the Alamo game. I did have words for Riley during the game. Must have thought he could hear me from Salem. I respect Jason, but had I said something after 2 1/4 quarters would not have been a knee jerk reaction. Really couldn’t believe the lack of urgency with 2 min in first half. Vaz looked injured after ankle and should have been benched. I find it interesting that Katz had Pac 10 POW (player of the week ) against AU and sucked ever since. Mannion had POW at AU and hasn’t been the same since. Vaz had POW against BYU and hasn’t been the same since. Is there a POW QB curse? Mannion looked great @ AU what happened? Riley is the coach through 2020, so I just hope he doesn’t have another game like this. I just hope someone on staff looks at this site and gets clue.

  4. 1) Like Jason, I’m not generally here during the games–good to vent/kudo after the fact.
    2) My resolution is to say something positive to at least one person a day (trite but true)
    3) Refuse to indulge in any double entendres ala Beavergopher–talk about low hanging fruit!

    HNY

    • 1) I do the same. I do watch a lot of the games with music on and commentators off. So I do pop on now and then for clarification when some call goes contrary to what I see. Otherwise I’m a little too animated to be near expensive electronics.

      2) That’s a really cool idea.

      3) *snicker*… you said low hanging fruit… heh heh….

    • Mine would be to continue to engage BeavGoph in junior highish double entendres in our quest to embarrass ourselves to the fullest extent rodently possible.

Here’s to Vaz keeping his balls high and tucked away tightly next season!

  5. All good words to live by but all bets are off when it comes to “in game” comments. No matter how angry or silly I’m sure that the comments I’ve made here have saved my TV from an airborne beer bottle. Happy New Year everybody.

  6. Uof0 have their replacement for Chip, which should happen after the Chips Bowl tonight. Here is an article on his replacement. What gives me cause is that again the cheaters are going to ignore the rules and regulations that they don’t think apply to them the high and mighty. You decide for yourself.
    http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/pac12/2013/01/03/fiesta-bowl-university-of-oregon-ducks-football-coach-chip-kelly-mark-helfrich/1807463/

(The only complication would be an Oregon state law requiring public universities to interview at least one minority candidate for head-coaching positions. Adopted in 2009 – a few months after Kelly was named Oregon’s coach-in-waiting, then promoted to succeed Mike Bellotti – the law is similar to the NFL’s “Rooney Rule,” but carries no penalties.

“We’ve got boxes to check,” the person said. “There obviously is a process, and those things will be done appropriately. But we’ll still end up with the same conclusion.” )

So it sounds like they have already made their decision regardless of what minority applicant they choose to interview to “boxes to check”, and that doesn’t sound like a “good faith” effort to follow the nature of the law.

    • Everybody has known since last year that Helfrich would replace Kelly if he leaves. This seems like smart planning to have someone waiting in the wings, especially close to LOI signing.
Everyone knows how to get around the Rooney Rule and hire whomever they want to in the NFL so no one should be surprised that Oregon can do the same thing.
So, if Riley were to leave, who does OSU have ready and waiting to take his place?
Hopefully, no one on the current staff but maybe BDC has an “A-List” ready.
Wait, that would take forward thinking, oops that is out of the question.

  7. I don’t have a resolution, but I did want to share this recruiting post by user “whatinthebluehell” over on the Scout forum. He does a nice job of putting together our most current status with several un-commited players.

    Top Prospects
Kearsley – OSU is his #1 at this point. Playing in the Semper Fi Bowl this weekend. Has been very very impressive from all indications of the Twittersphere.

Sean Harlow – He’s shooting up my board of HUGE gets and looks like we are now making a serious play for him. One of the Scout interviews really indicated that he’s leaning OSU. Video

“Harlow and Kearsley” – I think this becomes a package deal. They’ve become pretty tight. So Udub or OSU. 70/30 it’s OSU.

LJ Moore – Said in a Rivals video that he’s down to OSU and ASU. ND may be in the mix last second. So just because he announces one or the other, ND might jump might get the signature at the end of the day. Video

Hunter Jarmon – Is my top offensive player left on the board. He’s down to OSU, Wazzu, and Texas Tech. Dude is super underrated. Video

Lowell Lotuleili – Super quite in his recruitment and this would be a key piece to the future. We need 1 or 2 HS DT’s.

John Ross – Ross has indicated 5 schools left, and he will announce at the Sempri Fi game tomorrow night. Most say that its UDub or Oregon. OSU could be a key player, but my gut is that he’s a Husky. After watching his video, I think he ends up a DB at a D1 school anyhow. Video

Keishawn Bierra – Indicated this week that OSU was his #1 which is huge, because we need a LB or two in this class. He said in his Rivals video that he was waiting for a bigger offer. I believe that offer is Udub or USC. I don’t think he gets either and winds up a Beaver. Video

Lyndon Tulimaseali – He’s ours for the taking. Utah and academics would be our only competition. Video

Khari McGee – Only QB we have offered left on the board. Mobile QB which is a plus. I think he wants to come to OSU, it’s making sure he gets to play QB and not a DB position when he gets here. After watching his video again, and the intangibles (like speed and mobility) that our current QB’s don’t have, I’m sold on him. Video

Lawrence Mattison – Down to OSU and UTSA. Some have said we have too many RB’s, but when you have a chance to land a guy that has the physical size, agility, and speed (he’s a bowling ball) you don’t pass it up. If not for his past, I really believe he would have a lot more offers. Could be a short yardage specialist or fullback or a man child in the backfield. Think LaGarrett Blount without the left hook. He’s tripping the 11th. Video

Ofa Hautau – Snow College kid (sound familiar?) Was a HS Linebacker, lots of athleticism. Another DT would be a great get for the Beavs. He’ll be down on the 11th too. Video

Tatum Taylor – Pretty sure he’s a Sun Devil at the end of the day. But if he was to land in Corvallis, think of him as a KR/PR specialist (Reggie Dunn like) Video

Pat Martin – Climbing up the board a bit. Heard he might have a visit tomorrow night with Coach Perry. Makes our secondary solid right away. Video

Treshon Broughton – The offer is there for a guy that is getting overlooked by tons of teams which indicates grades are an issue. He’s a good future depth kid, with lots of upside. My guess he ends up at Fresno St. or JC. Video

Some other names that have been kicked around as of late on the Twittersphere and other sites.
Edward Williams, LB, HS out of New Orleans. Soft commit to Texas AM. Video

Austin Hooper, LB, HS out of De La Salle. Will probably choose Oregon or Udu but if we can get a visit and with Chippers leaving??? Video

Joe Bean, Athlete, HS out of OKlahoma. Video

And with the USC debacle and UCLA being very close to being over on scholarships. Look for the Beavs to go after some of their current verbals and kids they have offered.
    Cameron Judge UCLA
    Poasi Moala UCLA

What to watch for this week and over the weekend
    1. Chip Kelly’s departure. More than a few have expressed if Kelly leaves they will open up their recruitment
    2. Sempi Fi bowl is on Friday night on ESPN. Many of our players and offered kids in that game.
    3. The week of the 11th is a huge visiting weekend. We play Arizona at home, so if you can make it, we could all make that a great atmosphere.

  8. AngryBeavites,

See this link for a proposed new graphic header for this web site…

    http://timyost.wix.com/timyost#!AngryBeavscom-Home-Page-Header/zoom/cusy/image1vw4

Angry said to get input from you all to see if you like it. He’s fine with the way it is now or using this one. Either way…

Also, feel free to let me know if you know of any companies who are looking for an in house graphic designer as I’m unemployed (or freelance too). My contact info is in the “Contact” section of my portfolio site where the AngryBeavs graphc is. (the email form doesn’t seem to work so just manually email)

    Thanks

    • honestly, i like the simple look of the site and wouldn’t mind seeing it looking the same as it always has. lack of graphics and ad banners helps keep the site loading quickly on my various devices (tablet, smartphone)

    • I like it if it’s just replacing the banner above in visual and function. I’m assuming the place where “AngryBeavs.com Home Page Header” is placed will be where “A Critical View of Oregon State Athletics” currently sits?

I’ve always thought the current font makes that line look jumbled but never really cared enough to say. But if you’re adding a simple graphic, maybe a comic or one stroke font would clean that up as well?

    • I’m not fond of the angry looking eye. It’s just an eye, doesn’t convey anything about the mascot, the forum, or the university in general.
If anything, Angry’s tag line “A criticial view of OSU Athletics” is great, so maybe throw a Monopoly-guy monocle in front of that eye and we’re headed somewhere.
I do appreciate that someone cares enough and is confident enough to put it out there for all jokers like myself to criticize.

      • good insights…never would have thought of those. I was just thinking along the “tougher” look instead of the “bookish” look of the monocle. The eye doesn’t represent something concrete necessarily about the university. I don’t think it has to. I created this fairly quickly and thought the Angry eye along with the fractured Angry text gave it a sense of “disturbed” nature as a reflection of the unsettled and unsatisfied nature of the inhabitants of this board.

  9. Come on angry… William Arthur Ward.

This wrongly attributed quote isn’t as annoying as the most famous wrongly attributed quote and overall lousy “definition of insanity.” But it’s pretty bad. You should have continued your line of thought when you thought you should add another Hallmark quip… the Purkey sing/love/dance/whatever quote.

That’s because it doesn’t even sound like Hemingway. He would probably shoot himself in the head if he knew anyone attributed this to him.

And I’m pretty sure there are a couple more lines to it as well.

  10. Holy crap!

CU is just pounding the Zonies right now.

Momentum is starting to shift back to the cats, but they sure put themselves in a hole.

    • It seems meaningless in so many ways: Chip cheated to get the ducks more quickly to the status they have now; penalties associated with the infractions will come to late to affect Chip or even harm UO’s reputation; Chip will likely leave; UO wasn’t Pac-12 champ; the Fiesta Bowl outcome won’t affect the NC. The Ducks haven’t won honestly (if looking at the culmination of Chip’s tenure), but they won’t meaningfully lose anything, nor will Chip.

        • USC is still getting national hype, still getting top recruits…I don’t think the loss of scholarships will be to severe in number, and I think UO will maintain the national status to recover. Hell, infractions and penalties are practically a requisite for a national power.

          • did you notice U$C went 7-6 this year???? Part of that is on Lame Kiffen but the other is on the ability to create depth. USC was very thin this year and that will continue. Loss of scholarships will severely hamper a team that likes to “play fast”. Especially on defense

          • Yes I noticed that. And agree that while depth was a factor, so was poor coaching. I don’t see any meaningful changes in USC. Lane Kiffin’s comment after the Sun Bowl was “We’ll sign the #1 (recruiting) class in the country and get back to work.” OSU recruit Bierra is thought to be willing to sign with OSU, but waiting for a “higher offer” (read USC).

Like USC, UO may lose some depth, but it won’t change their arrogance or their approach, or the national visibility they’ve attained; they’ll probably just get better at cheating. Again to me, this almost seems to be a characteristic of national “powers;” infractions and at best, a short fall from grace.

Ultimately what gets a program is mediocre to worse coaching. That’s what seemed to bring the Miami program back into context with the NCAA masses. Auburn fell quickly off the attention radar after their NC (which was clouded with issues around Newton). But USC continues on, as does Ohio State….

I don’t understand what winning the UO changes for the Pac-12 or UO -money to the conference? OK.

All of this makes me think that with all of the attention UO gets for Chip Kelly and the “blur,” the most impressive coaching job the last 3-4 years has probably been at Stanford (assuming they don’t get busted for some kind of infractions). The changes Harbaugh wrought at Stanford and SF clearly mark him as one of the most effective coaches in his profession; he changes the culture, brings attention to detail, and develops strong defenses.

          • “I don’t understand what winning the Fiesta bowl changes for the Pac-12 or UO….”

Also, I meant to say at the end of the last paragraph: “Shaw continued Stanford’s fine play and won in the absence of Luck. The way he effectively handled the QB transition and attained production out of a young, mobile QB is something Beaver fans can only dream of”.

          • USC was not allowed to have their games televised while on sanctions for a year I believe. Just have to wait and see what those sanctions bring. I just don’t see them maintaining what they’ve done (cheaply) the last 4 years. And Helfrich is only 39 years old. He may have been CK’s right hand man but I don’t see him having the same success as CK with less experience.

          • Lost TV revenues is a bygone punishment. The problem is that it also penalizes every team the offender plays, and those teams have a bunch to say about that.

  11. If Chipster leaves I just hope the Ducks fall back enough so that I don’t have to worry every damn year about them winning a NC. Last year was so nice when LSU took them to the woodshed in the first game.

    • After some lousy kicking and an off-sides on coverage that immediately cost us points, I have one highly paid, non-recruiting assistant in mind for removal.

I would also look at Riley’s Time-out Coordinator. That guy just hasn’t got the job done.

        • Seems like the class is getting pretty big. Who besides the seniors will not be on the roster next fall?Agnew seems to have really gone into the doghouse. Too bad MR does not hold our QB’s to the same standard as fumbles by running backs. For some reason I think he will leave the program.

Have they ever said what kind of injury Woods had in the bowl game? Anderson was walking around on the sideline BTW.

          • He turned into a very good complimentary weapon. Could have used him against Texas on some short yardage plays. Hope he can recover like AP.

          • Last year, we lost 8 to injuries, grades and other ‘personal reasons’ (meaning kicked off for lack of talent)

            Jordan Bishop
            Geno Munoz
            Keynan Parker
            Cade Cowdin
            Jack Lomax
            Zeke Sanders
            Will Storey
            Tyler Trosin

Here is a stab at a list of guys who might not be back next year.

Malcolm Agnew – As mentioned, probably too talented to be a 3rd-4th stringer.
Tim McMullen – probably won’t have 2 punters on scholarship and Kostol has earned it
Blake Harrah – played in just three games this year and never cracked the rotation, isn’t very good
Dyllon Mafi – Played in just 2 games, recently arrested, isn’t very good
Tyler Perry – Has history of injuries, 3rd string H back, hasn’t made any impact in 3 years, isn’t very good
            Roman Sapolu – 3rd string C, isn’t very good
Shaydon Akuna – History of concussions, hasn’t cracked the rotation yet.

There are a couple more guys who have issues with grades too. When all is said and done, I think we take 22-25 in this class and lose 7-9 guys to attrition.

          • Good list of guesses. All make sense. What is the injury pattern with Perry?

Does anyone remember why Munoz left? Always seemed like he was going to be a good player.

  12. Angry: Agree about the in-game comments…almost embarassing to read back through them after the game.

    My New Year Resolutions:

    50,000 push-ups
    50,000 sit-ups/crunches
Decrease my awareness/caring about the Ducks’ success.
Decrease my personal vestment in a Beaver game outcome.

    Wish me luck.

    ~GWH

  13. Thank God……maybe we can start thinking about winning a Civil War again finally.

    Brandon Sprague ?@BrandonSprague

RT @RapSheet BREAKING: Chip Kelly is close to a deal to become the #Browns coach, according to a source informed of his situation.

  14. new commit?

    Mike Riley ?@Coach_Riley

Our coaches are doing a great job on the road today, it’s a great day to be a Beaver! #GoBeavs

    • I asked mama machado and she replied:

      Angie Machado ?@AngieMachado1

@BeavBlazer if it is who I think it is, it is a great pick-up. Haven’t been able to confirm with the athlete. The Lodge has the latest.

          • I really like this pick-up. Big and relatively fast. If academics don’t plague him, I’d love to see OSU be able to rotate him in when the D is getting tired and just punish or run by people. OSU has not had a back of this size AND speed in some time; usually its just the speed.

I anticipate Woods will get bigger this off-season (he’s getting pushed by Quizz), Ward will be better, Brown will bring speed and in the future there’s Haskins/Mattison. It will give the staff an opportunity to rotate backs like they’ve never had; all running behind what could be (on paper) one of OSU’s best offensive lines ever.

Throw in Vanderveen for a mobile QB and have him do at leat limited running like Dalton did at TCU (OSU is always evolutionary never revolutionary) to make defenses pay, and you have an offense that gets very hard to defend. Well, at least for Banker.

  15. Lawrence Mattison. 6’1 230lb Running back from Spring Ranch Texas. Ran for 1943 yards and runs a 4.47 forty! He is a steven Jackson prototype- a beast that destroys guys. His film is beyond impressive and he has WR speed. High 3 star but his senior season film has not yet been evaluated. GREAT GET!

    • He has some baggage, but the news lately has been that he is beyond that in his life and is focused, both on school and personal life. I have confidence that the staff wouldn’t take a flier on somebody that they felt would not fit with the program. Academics are rumored to be in order, but I still wonder if he is a greyshirt or a NQ.

But his performance on the field was dominating at times, he had something like 29 TD’s.

    • Sounds like a nice feel-good story type kid who found himself in trouble during his early highschool years, but a change of scenery and attitude has helped him turn his life around and now he’ll be playing D1 football. Seems like a good kid in interviews I’ve seen of him and he’s built like a tank.

    • This guy looks like a FB and runs like one too. He doesn’t have breakaway speed but can just pound between the tackles. Maybe he’ll be a FB but one that will get the ball more in short yardage situations.

Haven’t had a bruiser RB in a while.

  16. ?@beaverkman
@DamonSayles rumor is @LawrenceMattiso has verballed the #Gobeavs what can you say about him as a RB?

.@beaverkman Big-body RB who can be “Thunder” in a “Thunder & Lightning” package. Best of luck to @LawrenceMattiso. #OregonState #GoBeavs

  17. Well, wasn’t that game something to behold!

And no, I’m still not over it.

I still say if Dr. Ray gave a squat about OSU athletics he’d get rid of bobby d.

  18. First crack at next years top 10 in no particular order.

    Texas A&M
    Ohio State
    Stanford
    Oregon
    Alabama
    Louisville
    Clemson
    Not a Shame (ND)
    Georgia
    LSU

No Little 12 teams (texas, oklahoma, kstate)
    No michigan or nebraska

    Possible break through teams
    Boise State
    Cincinnatti
    Flo-Rida

    • To start the season?

Yeah… that looks about as dumb as any pre-season poll there is.

      I’ll buy tOSU.
Bama, LSU and UGA will get there and probably stay there because they play the best off-season football of anyone anywhere.
I’ll always buy Teddy Bridgewater. Dude is the love child of Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock… except he has a better release than either… and just about anyone else.
Manziel will have tape on him and no O-line. Johnny Football will soon be Johnny Pancake.

And then I’ll just agree with you and/or the mean anyways… since pre-season polls are beyond stupid.

        • 16-19 sounds about right.

Again though, pre-season sucks. Let’s see how we’re doing after week 3 or 4. Then we’ll see where we belong. If we escape October without a loss, I like our chances.

    Edit

Sean Harlow’s a Beav! Gotta think Kearsley won’t be far behind.

    Sean Harlow

    @ballsoharlow

Semper Fi All American. Oregon State commit! O STATE bound..

    San Clemente, California

    • I just got tingles.

I was so hoping Harlow would commit. And now I STILL want Kearsley.

This is awesome big boy recruiting with one O-line class after another. I want to just shove the ball in the opponents’ faces and take no prisoners. And big boys make for big boy football.

I’m going to go do the old prospector’s dance now.

  20. Looks like Kearsley has committed too! Hip Hip Hoo-fucking-ray!!

    Brayden Kearsley55 ?@BK55_ERA

Everyone who is following me please follow a good friend of mine and a future teammate! @ballsoharlow #FOLLOWHIM #PLEASE

    • Most exciting commits for me. Finally we can build some depth and have serious competition for starting jobs on the O-line. This is a great day to be a Beaver!

      • Every frigging year I swear that I won’t look at the message boards until AFTER the kids have signed on the dotted line.

And here I am again, getting me hopes up way too soon.

        DAMN!!!

    • Maybe I should read the whole thread before commenting.

Harlow and Kearsley the day after Mattison?

      This is just a dream.

And why are we talking about Tyner? Yes, he’s fast. And he has some RB skills. Honestly, he would do better in a system where he never gets touched… or is asked to even pretend to touch a real football player.

That’s not going to happen here. I think Brown is the better back, and I think Brown not being able to block is the reason he redshirted. Next year is going to be nuts. The year after?

      Hoo boy!

  21. Rewatching the Alamo bowl. Had to laugh at Doctor doing his best Brandon Hardin impersonation after not turning his head, following the receiver, making early contact that wasn’t flagged, yet still celebrating and making the punctuated incomplete gesture.

    • I watched the first three quarters myself this morning Jason. HTF did we lose?
Vaz could have had three other picks. F’up at the end of the 1st half was epic.
See you in Pasadena next year LOL.

    • The O-line is shaping up as one of the most dominant groups of young guys I’ve seen outside the SEC? Seumalo/Kearsley/Harlow/Bays/Weinrech/Andrews/Phillips-who am I missing? Gotta wonder if some of that depth decides to go elsewhere if they think they’ll lose playing time?
With these 2 guys coming on board, QB’s and RB’s should be thinking about OSU seriously, for the sheer fact they’ll be getting a chance to showcase their talents with all that protection up front.

      • The depth is spaced out pretty well. Redshirt the new guys, work through the back stock. Everyone will get at least 2 years as a starter from what I see. And there are always injuries.

  22. Nice job this recruiting cycle by Riley and staff. An impressive haul of offensive lineman to add to last year’s class – combined they really have the potential to make the offense go. It’s difficult for me to believe the finally put together a class this solid; almost all 3*+, with a few 2*s that may be upgraded before the recruiting period ends.

Who are the best tackle prospects now – on each side?

    • Skyler Phillips should be a 1 star, and he’s listed as 3 on rivals. That’s the only glaring error I see. I’m going to spend some time looking over film next week and giving commentary on each group.

        • That may be true about Phillips, but his film that I saw on youtube isn’t up to par with the other linemen we have signed this year and last.

I like this class so far, it gives us immediate help at our positions hit hard by graduation and allows to build some nice depth at multiple positions. I would like to see some outside linebackers, I just don’t know about the depth we have on the current roster.

        • Seems like Phillips would redshirt and at worst, provide depth at the guard spot.

I still don’t understand who OSU’s best tackle options are; I’ve never been sold on Phillips at tackle, and think guard is a better option for him now and in the (prospective) future. OSU just doesn’t seem to get the tall, long-armed prototypical tackle prospects.

          • Agree with Philips. Does not have the foot speed to handle good edge rushers. Saw that in the bowl game. Every other school recruited him as a guard, so I suspect we got him to sign with the promise to try to play tackle. Did not have other options, so there he landed. By body type, I always have thought he and Enger should be swapped.

          • Enger should be a tackle. .

I’d love to see Enger, Seumalo, Bays, J. Andrews, Phillip

Weinrich and G. Andrews as backups.

Though, if they stick with last years alignment and put G. Andrews at Kelly’s position that would be fine. I think Bays gets wasted on the bench, though, and Enger is a T.

          • What about Neilsen and Keller? I like Nielsen’s flexibility at being able to be the role of playing any position, but I think if he is the best lineman then he should beat somebody out. Lot to settled out. I wonder if Kearsley is good enough to start as a Freshman? I would think they would redshirt the Frosh, and go with Nielsen, bays, Andrews, Seumalo, Enger, Andrews, Weinrich rotation. Assuming that Weinrich can return to a hgh level after surgery? Then you can use Keller and Addie on Special Teams.

I need a roster to figure all this out?

          • Michael Phillips (man there a lot of duplicate names on this team) took a step in the right direction after struggling the past two. He was good his freshman year I think is due to the fact that he wasn’t protecting the quarterbacks blind side and not getting the the speed rushers. Still seems like he could be a great guard.

Remember during the spring when we had like 6 offensive linemen?

          • 1. phillips has size and the body to do well 2. he’s definitely a project compared to harlow and kearsley but thats fine 3. greyshirt possibility

        • I’d like to see film of that camp and know who the big time competition was. From what I saw, I think he’s a 1-star. Scout and Rivals might be privy to more recent film/info.

      • How do you figure Phillips is 1*? He’s big, strong, and is considered a 3* and around the 80th best og in the country according to scout and Espn also. I’ve also seen reports that toward the end of the season he was a pancake machine as well.

  23. What are the remaining holes to fill? LB and QB seem to be the biggest needs now, but also really hoping for LJ Moore to get on board. maybe a little more depth at WR to prepare after next years class graduates.

  24. Jumping the gun here on QB competition, but with this caliber of offensive line, I’d really like to see Harrington and Vanderveen get fair shots. I know Mannion and Vaz could both grow from this season, but with the Oline and RB depth, I’d love to see a running game emphasis with Vanderveen at the controls, running a little read option like Dalton did at TCU; keep defenses honest, let him gain confidence and grow into a passer over the course of the season.

On top of all of the Oline potential, there’s plenty of hope and potential that the Dline and Secondary can really compliment one another in coverage sacks and INTs off of hurried throws…

Again, its difficult to believe the quality of this class.

  25. a poster on the pure orange boards is saying the recruits are getting a look at the new OSU re-branding image and it seems to be stirring up some excitement for the program.

  26. anybody going to the basetball game tomorrow? it would be nice if the place weren’t half green. it’s hard for me to believe the beavs will win based on how they’ve played lately, i’m hoping for a showing like the one against kansas, otherwise something out of the ordinary, like reid/barton/olaf combining for 50 points or something.

  27. Micah Hatfield tweeted that Lake Oswego WR Stevie Coury joining the team.

    Micah Hatfield ?@M_Hatfield81
Corvallis welcome my little bro @StevieCoury into the Beaver family

search the internet, it looks like he is a greyshirt and will be in campus this winter term

  28. With all of the focus on the Oline recruiting success, has anyone seen anything on early recruit Fred Launia out of OSU’s American Samoa pipeline? Listed at 6’3″ 250 – 270 OT. Some speculate he could be DT, DE, or OL in college. If OSU is thinking defense, that could help start filling out the younger end of a unit that will be stocked with JC talent.

Interested to see if Tago can start contributing at DT this coming year.

  29. Not sure if anybody else noticed, but the post on Kearsley’s twitter page telling people to go follow his “friend and future teammate” Sean Harlow is no longer there. Hope this doesn’t mean he’s having 2nd thoughts. Hoping that maybe he just wanted to make the announcement himself at some point officially rather than through twitter innuendo.

    • Should we have expected anything more from Drama Queen U? Duck fans must love that they’ll be on this roller coaster again next season.

  30. New Year resolution. I will not build my success by dumping on the success of others. I just want a relatively level playing field and the opportunity to compete.

  31. LJ Moore has his final 2 visits set.

    LJ Golden Boy Moore ?@LJBouncyMoore

My Last Two Visits Will Be Oklahoma #Sooners And Arizona State #SunDevils

  32. Beavs early co-favorites for 2014 RB McCaffrey

    Robert Cassidy ?@Cassidy_Rob

#OregonState and #Nebraska are the two latest offers for Valor (Colo.) Christian RB Christian McCaffrey, son of Ed.

  33. Ducks would be a way better matchup. Or K-state. Or even Georgia…this title game is even more of a joke than usual.

Don’t forget, the week after we beat BYU at home, they went on the road and almost knocked off Notre Dame.

    • notre dame beat Stanford (they got help I know). oregon didn’t. Only argument that is needed. Right now I don’t think any team was playing as well as Texas A&M at the end of the season. and they beat bama

    • notre dame beat Stanford (they got help I know). oregon didn’t. Only argument that is needed. Right now I don’t think any team was playing as well as Texas A&M at the end of the season. and they beat bama. fuck oregon. they can eat a bag of dicks for all i care.

  34. Final ranking of #20 seems about right for OSU. Maybe a little higher than I expected, but hopefully something to help hold this current list of commitments to OSU and improve upon. With the number of returning starters, this is a team that should be expected to be top 25 again at the end of next year.

  35. I notice both Eggers and Cliff have quoted Storm regarding emotional leaders for this off season; he mentions Vaz and not Mannion, FWIW.

Also, Eggers claims Riley, ” intends to find a way to retain … Bray”. Noteworthy, I think, is the fact that Eggers makes the statement w/o a direct quote from MR to support it. I still expect Riley, et al. to sit back and see what happens and will be pleasantly surprised if they are proactive in keeping Bray.

  36. Cliff decided to add this little piece of unnecessary drama to his story.

Storm Woods said. “They grabbed this team by the neck and demanded nothing but the best. But we have Brandin, Cody (Vaz), Ryan (Murphy) and myself coming back. They taught us how to be leaders. We have to do what they did.”

He then wrote in the comments section that Woods was sitting next to those guys he mentioned, when saying that quote.

    • Glad you (and Cliff) clarified that point.

PS: I see Cliff’s comment came after my post here, without your input I probably would not have revisited his article, Thanks!

Now, if someone can come up with a definitive quote from MR regarding his commitment to finding a way to keep Trent Bray I think we’d all feel better!

    • 64.63%, Above average. Go Beavs! Makes sense for us during that stretch, as recruits that attended games had a very good chance (especially 10′, 11′) of being disappointed. Having players trip in January you can really accentuate the “family” atmosphere while allowing players/coaches more bonding time with the recruits, instead of just taking in the more superficial game day experience and a house party.

  37. Hear rumors of this a while back, and now it sounds like Jim Mora Jr is being courted by the San Diego Chargers after 1 year at UCLA.

  38. Nelson’s in. Enrolled. Nice:

    http://www.gazettetimes.com/blogs/cliff-kirkpatrick/final-football-stats-notes/article_8592a154-5946-11e2-8c97-0019bb2963f4.html

I am concerned about Peko enrolling next fall, seems like the risk of one of those guys who’s always a term away from enrollment. If all three JC DTs get in. that’s a huge help to this team.

Also, Nelson is apparently a punt returner, so that’s interesting with Poyer’s departure.

  39. 2013 schedule is out. Only one trip out of Oregon after the middle of October. Two Friday night games as well. Nice

    Aug. 31 Eastern Washington
    Sept. 7 Hawai’i
    Sept. 14 at Utah
Sept. 21 at San Diego State
    Sept. 28 Colorado
    Oct. 5 Bye
    Oct. 12 at Washington State
    Oct. 19 at California
    Oct. 26 Stanford (Homecoming)
    Nov. 1 (Fri.) USC
    Nov. 9 Bye
    Nov. 16 at Arizona State
    Nov. 23 Washington
    Nov. 29 (Fri.) at Oregon

    • If Riley can get consistent QB production, it looks like he’d have a reasonable shot at the first 7-0 start in team history. Again.

The bye-weeks fall nicely, as the last three games pose the most challenging part of the schedule for this staff. Although having UW at home might make it easier for Riley.

  40. Good instincts. Could be a good pickup if he develops. Isn’t great at attacking blockers and needs to work on driving through the ball carrier. Has way too many accesories for a football player ala any player at UO.
