  1. I’m being defeatist here, but if Cal talent is equal to or even somewhat less than OSU’s, CR won’t be able to counter Mike Montgomery’s coaching. I seem to recall, however, that I mentioned that last year and Jack gave a different perception of Montgomery’s ability. I don’t recall Jack’s take on it and I’m not going to the archives, but if he (Jack) could sound forth again . . .

    • Monty is an awesome regular season coach. I think only Tad Boyle might rival him (and I have to give a nod to Altman as well) in the Pac. Miller and Romar are good because of recruiting. They’re not particularly good coaches, but they can get the best talent and keep their egos in the form of a team long enough to be successful. That’s a different kind of coaching.

Bone is a train wreck who wouldn’t survive if his entire team didn’t play like a poor man’s Bill Laimbeer or Rick Mahorn every game. If you were watching the Wazzu game, you would have seen one of the most brutal offensive fouls in the history of the game. I’m not talking about the BS calls those really really really… really shitty refs called throughout the game. I’m talking about Moreland’s foul about halfway through the second half. Nobody really said anything about the foul, but Moreland came into that lay-up with his knee lifting into the jaw of the defender intentionally. That’s how beyond “chippy” the refs let that game get. It was just a display of a bunch of thugs with police backing.

Sendek sucks as a person and a coach. But he does get great talent every now and then. He’ll lose a ton of games with moderate talent, but he’ll win with it. Manic results signify poor coaching.

I don’t know why O’Neill ever had a head coaching job. I remember him from Hoop Dreams, and I wondered then why anyone would ever play for that guy. Apparently nobody does.

The jury’s still out on Coach K. He inherited a mess, so he gets a pass for now.

Howland is one of the worst coaches out there. I would be a better, more successful coach at UCLA. He just rolls the ball out on the court and tells his players to go play. If he has moderate talent (relative to UCLA), then his teams roam somewhere near .500. If he has relatively good to great talent, his teams win. But it’s not because of him. I’m surprised the players even allow him to call time-outs.

So that leaves Coach Rob and Dawkins. Both are “preparation” coaches who have raised the level of their programs from the cellar to just above average in terms of everything a coach does to lay a foundation where once there was only rubble. They’re able to get better than average talent to sign on. They’re good enough to understand the game and prepare their teams for the opposition. But they don’t really have the experience to go head to head with other coaches and/or teams on this level game in and game out.

This type of coach is one who teaches throughout the year until his team finally gets it. The problem is that if you don’t have superior talent you don’t win out in early league games enough to bolster your record with a late-season run. And those early league losses are just on the edge. If the Beavs would have won their close losses last season, they would probably have gone to the Tourney after the UW win in the Pac Tourney… as an at-large in a weak league.

      Ifs and buts….

Talent levels on both teams continue to rise slightly every year. Injury killed our floor, but depth is still greater than it was four, ten, fifteen years ago.

We as Beav fans can either wait out our own coach’s development (which isn’t far off), or we can go back to the coaching-go-round and get another. I personally will wait until next year for results due to circumstance. But I will be at the forefront of dissenting voices if the program doesn’t take the next step next year. And if that happens I will also be screaming that we need to spend some coin to get an already developed coach, or we are just resetting the clock to five years ago.

  2. I feel Monty doesn’t have his heart into Cal like he did with Stanford, IMHO. Good news, won’t have to see Jay John’s ugly face on the bench as he was “moved” into athletic administration over the summer at Cal.

  3. An argument for split carries, though one based primarily on elite backs with NFL futures:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/college-football/news/20130131/running-back-recruiting-reality-alabama/?sct=uk_t11_a4

I think this argument is attractive to somebody like Tyner, who already seem injury prone and also wants to run track. In the UO offense, a back can still get in on big plays even with shared/few carries.

OSU finally has the depth to rotate backs, and many here have advocated for a diversified approach in the running game. When Jacquizz Rodgers was here, Riley didn’t trust anyone else, and Quizz was the classic “feature” back.

I suspect Woods will come back bigger, stronger, and maybe a little faster, Wards will be ready, Brown (some speed!) will hopefully get some touches, and after redshirting Mattison (one of my incoming faves) and Haskins will probably work their way into the conversation.

    • I agree, except I think Brown will make the most of his touches. That kid is soooooo good, it’s scary.

I’m very happy with Ward’s progress. And I just have to say I saw it coming when he didn’t even have an offer. The kid works hard to be a team player, and it shows. He’s the type of depth we should have at every position… undervalued but skilled and competent… early in his career. His upside isn’t much more than what he did this past year, but he has great value as depth. And Anderson is the same. It turns out that kid probably should have been offered as well. I absolutely love the De la Salle kids and their work ethics.

Woods, IMO, runs too upright. He has awesome feet which are better than his vision. I don’t see him getting much better than he was this past year unless he learns to lower his shoulders through the line. He’s going to continue to get his bell rung until he does so.

      • Quizz reportedly stays in contact with Woods and encourages/teases him to get stronger. Quoted as telliing Woods to hit the weights and that Woods “had arms like a wide receiver.” I expect Woods will be responsive to this and come back noticeably stronger.

I agree on the upright running style though and wonder too if that will change. Some guys, Stevenson, Polk(?) – who was that RB that went for an even 100 yards against USC in the Moore-led upset? – seem to run upright but move well enough laterally that they remain effective. Guys like McCants and Woods (to a lesser degree) seem too upright and less agile and therefore less effective and prone to the hits you mention.

        • McCants went all tippie toes in the hole. Woods keeps his momentum and lifts his feet with purpose. So that’s not a fair comparison. Stevenson ran with lower pads (and lower power). Polk might be a good comparison. Polk wasn’t as good with the feet, but he was similar.

I like Woods. I just thought he would retain his footwork and acceleration while learning to dip into the line like a Matt Forte or a Chris Brown (of Colorado and Titan fame). But the tape on Woods shows he doesn’t finish runs on the second level. He’s pretty much fine sifting through traffic in the hole. but he goes down after 10 or 15 yards with a high shot too often. The defenders in the hole go after legs and torso. The defenders on the second level go after whatever they can hit. Too often, Woods is running on the second level like he’s in the hole. And he gets hit in the head because of it.

Chris Brown (of future OSU fame) has the same ability to hit the second level. But he also has extreme balance and vision once he gets therelothesline. He will duck a clothesline tackle and redirect for additional yards. But he can also take account of his position and just drive for everything he can get once the situation turns into a sure tackle. Woods doesn’t do this. He continues to dance until he gets hit in the head. I wonder if he has literal vision problems sometimes. It’s not like baseball where immortals like Gwynn and Boggs go get corrective lenses to bring their game back to the 20/10 vision they saw when they were younger. That’s not the “vision” I’m talking about. But it might have something to do with the vision to which I am referring.

          • Good post Jack.
I actually like Agnew’s running style and power better than Woods and he may still be the starter if he could hang on to the ball. So disappointing because his potential is high also.

          • PAC12 recently rebroadcast the Badger game (’12) and I was surprised at how many carries Agnew had that I’d forgotten. I agree his potential is high. On that day the ball security thing didn’t seem to hold him back but one has to figure that it’s always in the back of his mind. That’s probably a good thing for his performance, but OTOH the initial perception that he has problems surely reduces his playing time.

I am impressed with the ability to move the pile which Ward has demonstrated. Really do hope Riley takes advantage of the stable of RB’s he now has, there should be no excuse for not utilizing the Split Carries ObjCritic mentioned as well as running some two back sets.

          • Do you remember Ryan Cole? He looked like he would be a beast, but every time he took a handoff he would find the pile, run straight in to it and fall down.

    • Are you talking about this?
      http://oregonstate.scout.com/2/1262437.html

I don’t know where anyone gets the idea there will be no dead/quiet/restricted periods. This article shows that even the supposedly smartest coaches out there are feeding the dumb jock stereotype.

Yes, PSA’s will get no sleep if they choose to get no sleep. What this rule does is it allows college coaches to dump the Lyles and Yelvertons of the world. It allows them to contact the PSA directly ad nauseum. Someone like Chip Kelly doesn’t have to call a Willie Lyles once a day or more just to keep tabs on a kid because his once-a-week call was already used. And when calls are made to street agents like Lyles during the dead period, it will stand out that much more.

Look at what Kelly did with LMJ and Seastrunk. He called Lyles quite a bit because Lyles was directing traffic under the old rules–once a week contact. When dead periods arrived, calls to Lyles increased and were obviously more concentrated. And that was under the old rules.

Now there will be no reason to call a street agent except for the dead periods. Imagine going from five calls a week to none then hitting a dead period when the agent gets five calls a day. That’s as sore a thumb as you can show.

This is all done to cut out the middle-man. Street agents suck. If you’re a school who doesn’t get on TV every week, those agents will tell coaches to fuck off… without the PSA even knowing you were even interested. They don’t “steer” PSA’s. What they do is restrict access so that only those coaches they approve of get to talk to the PSA’s. Normally, these agents get their cut on the back end when the PSA’s get drafted. You know this because the agents are sitting with the kids on draft day itself. i would be completely surprised if Yelverton was not sitting with Keenan Allen in this year’s NFL draft… even though he has a duty to be the softball coach at the Juco over the hill from Berkeley.

This ruling takes out the white noise. It makes it all cut and dry. It will never keep Calipari types from having intermediaries do all the dirty work for them, keeping them in “plausible deniability” territory according to physical records. But it begins to cut into that and the more common street agent phenomenon.

      • thanks for adding the link, somehow forgot to paste it.

Agents sitting with draftees? like this?
        https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR5KGCGQDEeK33guNbFiDcBf9fCEzliBP3q592wD6PmQ8IpDIdI

Love how Oregon fans claims they never got any benefit from Will Lyles since Seastrunk never played. How come LaMichael James never comes up as the smoking gun?

I get what you’re saying about the rules being there to help cut out the middle men, but I just don’t think the new rules will stop the cheaters from cheating. If anything, it just means the kids will get bombarded with phone calls at all hours of the day. I couldn’t imagine trying to concentrate on finals and SAT’s in high school with my phone ringing non-stop.

        • The cheaters won’t stop cheating. But they will be more obvious.

Think about it this way. The NCAA has to sift through umpteen million calls to figure out if they’re fine. This rule is the equivalent of when the Baltimore Police forced drug trafficking below such and such street in The Wire.

You know it’s going to happen. But make it happen in a concentrated area. Anyone who steps outside that area is easily nabbed.

I know it’s hard to see from an outside view. We think these kids get no calls except for their “list of five.” That’s not true. And it’s worse if they have agents like a Lyles or Yelverton. These characters will call on a daily basis… and more. They are purportedly the PSA’s “friends,” but they are calling and taking hours out of the kids’ time to make sure their investment is vested on the back end… if they don’t get $25k checks to hold them over.

The kids now will have the right to block any numbers they want. They won’t have to rely on a Lyles character the day after a call to hear that, “Coach Kelly really liked his talk with you yesterday. You’re his type of player.”

I’m not being obtuse about this shit. This has happened in hoops forever. The gatekeepers don’t steer. They restrict access. And the limited calls have kept coaches from breaking that access down. If you’re Coach B, and you want to talk to PSA A, then you need to call Street Agent C first under the current rules. C will still exist in the future, but you have a chance to ignore C and go straight for A if you, as B, want the kid. B can always block you or ignore you on his own. But we all know what collectors and telemarketers do. All it takes is one contact to just get A to listen. Then C is out of the picture.

That’s the goal. Coach K (Duke) broke the current rule on purpose this last summer. He knows what’s up. Who’s going to prosecute Coach K for a minor violation no matter how blatant and “in your face” it might be? He didn’t call the kid’s street agent, which would have been totally within NCAA rules. He called the fucking kid while he was sitting four rows behind him at an AAU game. And the kid answered the phone. Everyone who was anyone was there and saw it all happen.

I like that Coach K guy.

          • Sorry… that was the point in that he could have dealt with the PSA’s street agent and probably landed him if he wanted to do so. Proythress was gone early, and Coach K knew it. Kentucky should vacate more than half their historical wins due to admitted violations… under past, much more lenient rules. Current standing is no different… except they’re so good at it they won’t ever admit it anymore… and they won’t have to.

          • Gotta wonder if Mitch Barnhart were still here, would we have a similar culture in OSU athletics? He’s permitted it at Kentucky since he left OSU, and I wouldn’t exactly say OSU ran a “clean” program under Erickson while Barnhart was here.

          • Don’t blame Barnhart. No AD at UK has any real power. Think of college sports with a K Street that has been there since WWII. That’s UK to a T. Barnhart is only required to round up the usual suspects every once in a while… and even they won’t get time.

          • And the same holds true for Barnhart if he would have stayed here… to a lesser degree since historical cheating isn’t a part of the fabric of OSU sports… obviously.

Reser was the man in the early 00’s. That’s not because he was the AD.

          • blocking a number is not as straight forward on a cellphone. And it varies with cell providers and type of phone you have. so just saying , just block an annoying incoming call is easier said than done

          • very true. I had this really clingy chick named Lennay Kekua who kept calling me about a year ago. I tried to get her number blocked but T-Mobile wouldn’t let me. Luckily, she said she found another guy who she found more interesting.

          • I’m already a big google voice fan. With a simple free Android app, you can make google voice calls free to anywhere when you have a wifi connection. Works great while in foreign countries and needing to call home, but the coolest part is being able to make phone calls while on an airplane (as long as their wifi has a decent connection). Pretty sure those fancy iphones can’t do it though.

          • I was only talking about it in a recruiting context. But it is pretty cool.

Bad product doesn’t gain as much traction as awesome product. I think GV is the next wave.

        • Oh… and “agents sitting with draftees” is precisely what I’m talking about. That pic is typical in the hoops world. And less typical is that hoops has graduated to actual agents controlling the picture. They don’t even have to be in that draft day scenario. World Wide Wes is the best of them, but go ahead and look up the Pump Brothers and how they vowed to fuck up OSU hoops into the near future because OSU wouldn’t play ball.

Fucksticks are fucksticks, and working with them doesn’t make them otherwise.

          Right Duckies?

  4. @LJGinger
Oregon has moved away from Keishawn Bierria after offerin Johnny Ragin III…KB will choose between OS and UW.

    @HuskyNationESPN
@jweedston Still working on some confirmations, but Robinsons twins and Keishawn Bierria are among the official visitors. #HuskyNationchat

      • Because he’s not driven by academics. Remember a couple years ago when Tyler Johnstone wanted to go somewhere he could become an engineer? A Duck friend of mineI had a good chuckle when he finally committed then signed with Nikegon.

Since the syllabus for becoming an engineer at Nikegon is “major in physics then transfer to OSU” (in a nutshell), I think BS is the call on what PSA’s say when they’re being recruited.

        • I almos want him to go to uo, just so it would give me more pain, like a self inflicted razor cut. Just shows where we are in the recruiting ladder in the state and regional. It pains me to see how poorly we do with the in-state recruits. Not because I think we need Oregon players, but when there are top notched talent in the state we should get some of them, and because we are not it shows a huge problem in recruiting. BYU, UW, UO, Arizona have all got recruits from this state this year alone, yet we have NONE. This has been a problem for years.

          • I’m not bothered by the lack of chasing Ragin. I think the kid in Truckee (Zak Pettit) and Chad Bach are local targets who are undervalued. But I’m not buying Ragin on measurables alone. And if he’s shunned us up to now (not likely… not?), then he can gth.

I don’t see anything special about Ragin that makes him a football player. I see more in lesser prospects like Dallin Leavitt or Evan Colorito. I do feel pain for our school since we couldn’t bring Kearsley home. He’s really the only premiere Oregon prospect I think has a chance beyond college… except for Bryson Sullivan if he ever stops being injured.

I lie. I would like Doug Brenner as a DT prospect. He’ll be a good OL, but he’s a wrecker, not a protector.

And who’s to say Tyner doesn’t make it to the next level to get a bencher’s paycheck? He’s fast. That counts for something. He’ll never have to block and only sometimes catch the ball. So holding a clipboard will be more productive than 50% of his time on the field. But that’s his choice.

          • Brenner, Kirkland, Tyner, Kearsley, and Ragin are all guys I think we should have been in on. Only Kearsley gave us any time of day. But its not just this year, Balducci, Barafo, Lowe, Lylera are all recruits we didn’t even have a sniff.

Nevermind me I am just whining, this time of year brings that out in me. I just wish we would recruit a little bit better, I am not saying Top 20 class, but Top 30 is within reach, but we never can pull it off.

          • Drop Kirkland and Ragin… add Turituri and Bach.

And drop Voeller if you think he should be added. I’m told Nikegon is looking for someone to replace him at his position but will take him if they must.

          • I am fully in support of our efforts to get Bierria. I love that kid’s game. angry has talked for ages about another Doggett. I think he’s the one.

          • I wish there were a way to insert photos in our posts. There’s a great photo of Doggett scoring in the CW, about 2-3 ducks trying to stop him from reaching the goal line.

THAT’s the kind of LBs OSU needs for the spread and read option offenses they face. Now that Bray’s a full time coach, it’d be nice to bring Doggett back in some capacity. What happened to him, did he end up playing in Canada for a while?

          • Yeah, that’s probably the most flattering pic of the sports bras. Those were some ugly Duck uniforms too.

Doggett scored a TD in back-to-back CW’s as I recall.

  5. every time we play cal i’m reminded of when montgomery was doing color analysis for fsn (back when fsn was still a thing) and essentially called the beavers the biggest joke he’d ever seen. shit, five years later and the perception probably hasn’t changed a whole lot. crabbe’s gonna kill the 131, probably going to be a long night. go beavs.

  6. Beavers up 41-33 at the half. But again they need to keep the intensity and focus when they come out for the 2nd half. Winning a game like this would be huge for their confidence. Need to come out early in the 2nd half and extend this lead. Just need to keep getting the ball deep in the paint and they’ll win this game.

    • Another turnover and then commits a foul. Almost to the point Craig Robinson has to bench him, he’s not helping the team tonight

  7. Another Beavers loss. A game they were in complete control of and they lose. Yet again. Cal has outhustled Oregon State in the last 10 minutes and that’s what killed OSU on that possession.

    • I was just thinking how rare it is for a team not to even get an attempt off these day. Sometimes you see a steal, but usually not five guys running around clueless.

      Luck O’ the Beavs.

    • CR accepts blame in postgame radio, then immediately mentions the players failure.
Calls to mind Hillary accepting blame for Benghazi and then explaining how she did everything right.

      • Wtf does Benghazi have to do with anything?

In fact, what stupid fucking moron thinks the USA is the all-powerful entity on this earth and can do no wrong? What dumb fuck thinks we can be the ultimate super hero for all our people overseas always?

Maybe idiot boy with his “can’t find any WMD’s under here” jokes while FUCKING AMERICANS WERE DYING FOR HIS FUCKING LIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        ?

Yes? Is he your fucking hero?

Lay off the Benghazi bullshit which has never had any merit, and I will lay off idiot boy and his lies and his war crimes and his KILLING OF AMERICANS, CHILDREN AND INNOCENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Benghazi is just another example of a person in a leadership position “accepting blame” in a totally false and disingenuous manner, ala CR last night.

One doesn’t have to believe the USA is “the all powerful entity” to know that contingency plans on the anniversary of 9/11, especially in the mideast, should be at a high level. The idea that an anti-muslem video sparked this sad event doesn’t even pass the smell test.

heh, heh, did someone mention manipulation??

          • I think you think your logic follows through on itself. It doesn’t. Would the White House done better to just say, “We can’t comment on the specifics at this time,” like every other police investigation out there? Sure. But to put on our tinfoil hats and scream ALIENS IN AREA 51 is just silly. The tape of stupidity you reference caused a problem in more ways than one. Benghazi was not the only foreign US installation having a large angry crowd outside its doors that day. And it also was not the only hot spot where US personnel were on the move for safety.

Would you like to hear the official truth from the WH? Would you like to hear that the US is spread far too thin to handle situations like this? Would that make you feel safer in the end? Or would that just endanger all of our personnel overseas and embolden the criminals?

That would be the height of irresponsibility if the WH were to do that. They would represent our personnel better by stepping out from behind the dais, lifting their shirts, picking lint out of their belly buttons and eating it on camera.

Yet you whine for the irresponsible.

  8. another fine strategy by CR Joe Burton throws it away and we go for layin down 3 and only 3 team fouls. CR needs to invest in a white board so at least he can fake a last play! Very disappointed in another 2nd half collapse by the Beavs.

    • Yeah, I was going to mention that also. What the hell does CR talk about in the huddle or if these guys aren’t listening they need to be called out. You cannot go for two down three with 7 seconds left and 4 fouls to give. There’s no time!

  9. 99.9% of college coaches call a TO at the end of the game to set up an in bounds play to get a good look. CR chooses to do nothing because he has no fucking clue what to do. I feel bad for these players because they deserve better.

    • Oh joy!

I really hope we don’t have any road games which should be won if a certain third base coach would wave a runner home in a certain late inning.

      That might set me off.

  10. We have Starks, the master of jacking up terrible 3’s, yet we can’t get one off at the end of the game. What the fuck is up with that?? Maybe CR knows a secret rule where unused T.O.’s get converted into points after the season and we actually won this game and clinched an NCAA tourney bid.

This is so pathetic, all I can do is chuckle at the complete ineptitude of Beaver Basketball. The glory days of raising C.B.I. Championship banners into the rafters are long gone.

    • You are so right.

We have a guy who shoots one for three from trey-land… or four for nine from the field overall, and it must be his fault.

Meanwhile, that big who was one for four from the field and two for eight from the line was just friggin’ awesome.

  11. Just to add some more pessimistic fuel to the fire, Beavers Basketball and Football have gone 4-12 in their last 16 combined games. Most of those losses have come in excruciating fashion. Udub, Stanford, Texas, and the annual Civil War massacre in football and all the blown second half leads in basketball.

We better be rewarded with a College World Series Title for having to put up with all this other shit.

  12. I stand by what I wrote a couple threads ago. The youth are our future, and Barton should start.

LMW has arrived. Kid is killer. I like him more now that he’s confident in his shot. I’m thinking he should start too.

So… my starting line-up from here on out is Barton, Berto, LMW, Collier and Moreland… with Starks, Burton, Reid and Schaft playing quality minutes.

        • Throw in a new head coach and an actual point guard who’s not named Challe and I’m with you. You’ve got me really excited about the 2016 season!

          • There’s nothing wrong with Barton so long as he’s feeding scorers. The Beavs are better with him on the floor.

And I’m a little peeved at LMW only getting bench minutes. He’s found his stroke from outside, and that just opens up the floor for Collier and Berto.

  13. I am kind of doubting CR gets fired this year. Change is slow at OSU, there is not a ton of money there, and most of the team is coming back. I am kind of waffling between rooting for another debacle next year and CR getting shown the door and an actual good season. Not having Joe will be a plus… I am hoping that Moreland goes to Europe too, not having to watch his horrendous offense and overrated defense would be a plus.

    • “After the game, Robinson admitted he should have used one of his timeouts there and called it “inexcusable.””

Wonder if Robinson berates himself publicly when he makes mistakes?

      • It’s a double-edged sword. If CR calls a TO, then Monty just tells his kids to foul on the inbound and put us on the line for two. Then time runs out as we have to still foul them four times just to get a FT parade started.

That’s all I thought of regarding TO’s as I watched time run out. Then I turned to my wife:
        Me: That was special.
Wife: *ha* At least you didn’t lose by 24.
        Me: Same difference.

        • Hate to agree with Jack on this one but it wasn’t CR’s fault. I’d bet good money that if you picked 5 people from this blog and said “Alright boys there’s 15 seconds on the clock, go shoot the fucking ball at the fucking hoop” we could probably manage to at least get a shot off. This one’s at least 75% on the players. If Coach Rob needs to use extra timeouts to go over the basics of shooting, then this team has bigger problems.

          • When Coach sees Burton having trouble in-bounding the ball-CALL A TIMEOUT! No time off the clock and you can reset. Moreland above the top of the key should never have been an option. In fact, having Moreland in there, you’re just begging CAL to foul him and send him to the line for 1 of 2 and game over since you don’t have time to foul for possession.

If the game plan was to look for a 3, Moreland or Burton should have been replaced with Olaf. Maybe not the most consistent shooter on the team, but at least as a safety valve you know he’s going to get the ball in the air at worst. Burton and Moreland should not have been offensive options.

“On the last play, Roberto Nelson tried to come off a double screen set by Eric Moreland and Devon Collier, but as Moreland popped out, Joe Burton could not inbound to Nelson and instead threw it to Moreland above the top of the key. Moreland didn’t see Ahmad Starks waving frantically for the ball, tried to get it to Nelson but instead tossed it to Burton. With Nelson still being denied the ball, Burton (0 for 1 from three-point range this season) searched for someone to pass to, then unloaded the ball toward Starks as time expired. “

  14. IAGDTBAB from Coach Cav just now. Not sure if this is for Lawrence earlier or another commit.

    Mike Cavanaugh ?@CoachCavOSU

Great last week of recruiting. Cant wait until signing day. Having a great time in So Cal. It’s a great day to be a Beaver. #GoBeavs

  15. Question for Beaverkman. So is this our class? Any indications that some of the possibles will choose us or any surprises in the works?

    • I think this is pretty much it.
If we get Keishawn Bierria then that would be needed. LJ Moore is still in play, both are announcing NSD, I think Moore goes somewhere else. Would be huge if we get both, best shot is Bierria. There are a couple others out there that may not sign on Wednesday. Ofa Hautau I heard might wait until March, probably to see if he has made grades. After NSD we should be offering walkons. Would love to see Edward Williams, but pretty sure we are too far away for his comfort, he would be a steal. I think he is between Tex Tech and La Tech.

I don’t really see any verbals defecting, most seem real solid. In fact, I have not heard any getting any interest.

I will wait to comment on the class until after NSD, but right now it seems average, and much like last years. It had the potential to be very strong but failed to close on some of top end talent. However get a few of the above and turns into above average class. Now the overall talent level is very good much much better than 3-4 years ago.

  16. And now a new low in the Robinson era, Beavs are in the sole possession of last place as the Utes beat the Buffs on Rick Majerus Day in Salt Lake. Great day to be a Beaver!

  17. Some notes from Eggers:

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/127503-beavers-land-d-end-eye-five-more-prospects-as-signing-date-nears

I hadn’t heard about 6′-5″ 290 lb OT BlakenMuir. Played/started 12 games, had shoulder surgery and can’t play spring ball. “good player and guy” according to one reporter at Star-Advertiser. Muir may have been getting moved from LT to LG.

    http://warriorbeat.staradvertiserblogs.com/2013/01/15/muir-gets-release/

    • “I didn’t even know it was there” HAHAHAHA

The official visits are over for ESPN 300 defensive end Davin Bellamy (Chamblee, Ga./Chamblee). The 6-foot-4, 235 pound pass rusher has taken trips to Florida State, Tennessee, Georgia and Oregon, with the Ducks sneaking in for his last official over the weekend. The former Seminoles’ commitment said the trip went well, besides one small mishap.

The talented recruit created quite the stir over the weekend when the recruit tweeted a photo of himself in an Oregon dorm room during his official. The photo, which he quickly deleted, showed Bellamy, along with several others, with what appears to be a water pipe. The device is commonly known for recreational drug use. When questioned about the incident, Bellamy’s tone quickly changed to regret and embarrassment.

“I did not even know that was there,” Bellamy said. “These girls just told us to come in their room and take a pic and we were there for like 30 seconds tops. I deleted it as soon as I noticed, but it just blew up and I cannot believe that happened.”

Aside from the incident, Bellamy said he enjoyed his time in Eugene.

“It was a pretty good visit,” Bellamy said. “Facility wise, it was probably my best visit so far. They do a lot with their linebackers there with blitzing from all directions and sometimes they get free licks on the quarterback. It was better than I expected.”

The in-state Bulldogs appear to have maintained the driver’s seat to land the four-star prospect on signing day.

“Georgia is still my leader going into my decision,” Bellamy said. “I spoke to them on Friday before I left for my official. They told me to try not to fall in love with my last visit.”

Bellamy says he plans to announce his decision at his high school at approximately 10:45 a.m on signing day, which is this Wednesday.

  18. For you old time Blazer fans, Lionel Hollins kid came up huge for the Gophs with the game winning three and a forced turnover on the subsequent Hogeye possession.

  19. Check out that Stanford crowd! I play in front of more people at the club. But then again; sunny day in the beautiful Bay area, Super Bowl Sunday and, of course, its the last place Beavs. I get it…never mind. JB

  20. I love how you can almost hear the resignation in Parker’s voice when Stanford comes out and hits the bucket on their first possession of the 2nd half.

  21. Nelson misses all three foul shots, then fouls on the other end. Earlier he missed a wide open three and Stanford came down and hit a three. It is these five or six point swings that have defined the Beavers season. Not picking on Roberto, it’s been different players at different times.

  22. Yeah, CR, “nothing to be ashamed of” really, 1-8 and there’s nothing to be ashamed of? Man, does he get away without any criticism from the media.

    • I would think Roberto would be “ashamed” that he missed four free throws that his team needed. I would also think that the team would be “ashamed” that they played such poor defense down the stretch that their opponent made four three pointers in a row!

  23. 1-8 and in dead last at the turn in conference play. Awesome job coach! At least we got a few moral victories in there. Man this team is a fucking joke. Robinson is a fucking job. OSU mens hoops program is a fucking joke. IF we all can see this what the hell is wrong with DeCareless????

    • De Care Less is the worst AD in a Power 6 conference. Sara Jean Underwood would probably have this team at atleast 3 Pac-12 wins at this point. Attendance would be higher and recruits would play better for her when she promises to bring more friends to an after party after they win. BDC is 30 years out of date. He needs to be pushed not asked out the door. If Robinson doesn’t beat Utah he needs to either publicly apologize to all Oregon State fans or resign.

  24. Came across an alarming stat. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the last .500 conference record for OSU. That’s twenty, 20!!!!, straight seasons of having a losing record in conference play. The last time OSU had a winning conference record? Gary Payton’s senior season. Just a little perspective on that, GP retired from the NBA five years ago and will more than likely be entering the Hall of Fame this year. It’s been awhile.

The Beavs have spent a lot of time rotting in futility, yet we’re still a Top-20 all-time winning program.

  25. I haven’t watched Beaver basketball since the duck game but decided to tune in today. During my hiatus I watched alot of top 20 basketball and realized that even good college basketball teams make a bunch of stupid errors and even lay an egg or two (see Duke) but woe is the Beaver fan that has to watch this crap. As bad as they are offensively they are a putrid defensive team. I’ve never seen a team give their opponents more open 3’s than the Beavs (last in the conference in scoring defense and opp FG%). Starks has to work way too hard to get off his shot although he doesn’t help himself with his lazy off-ball effort. The Beavs’ offense just doesn’t work. I’ve never seen so few players cut to the hoop in my life. So it’s back to the top 20 games and no to Beaver basketball. I would be tempted to tune in again if CR took Jack’s advice and played the youngsters but history would bet against it. Less than 2 weeks to baseball.

    • Yeah, I have only watched 3 games. Saw everything I needed to know in those games so I started doing other things. Been super productive and have no regrets that I didn’t tune in. I read the comments and it seems like people are torturing themselves by watching these games.

Beavs stink. It was obvious they’d stink this year when JC left–that guy was the heart and soul on D. ELITE defender. Should be better next year, but nowhere near a tourny team (unlikely even an NIT team).

They need to recruit heady defenders and effort guys. CR is recruiting the wrong type of player…he’s getting tempted by athleticism. All these guys got by without effort in HS. Combine that with bad results and it’s a self-reinforcing, downward spiral.

      • It’s not like the D was any better last year with Jared. The difference this year is that with him and Angus we have nobody who can solely or in tandem take control of late game situations. I don’t know why anyone who does or doesn’t watch gets even remotely upset. There are things they can do better on either end, and personnel decisions are head-scratchers here and there. We have no consistency on personnel, and whichever assistant is responsible for the defensive scheme needs to do some soul-searching. They’re still competitive and playing with effort. But we all know that’s just not enough without leadership on the floor.

Right now I’m looking at Starks as the guy who needs to sit at the beginning of the game and in crunch time unless FT’s are needed to pull away. Speaking of FT’s… Berto? Definitely not clutch shooting there.

        • “The difference this year is that with him and Angus we have nobody who can solely or in tandem take control of late game situations.”

Jared and Angus maybe came up big in crunch time 2 times last year. MAYBE. We lost just as many close games last year as this year. The problem has always been Coach Rob’s laughable x’s and o’s coaching in late game situations.

          • Go back and look again. They won more than they lost.

Not coincidentally, many of the games lost all had Starks as the heavy crunch time lean.

But they also should not have been in most of those situations, win or lose. You’re going to have a bullshit ref game here or there, like the CW at home last year or Wazzu last Saturday. But poor defense is what allows other teams to be close or slightly ahead in crunch time. Frankly, our O was pretty damn good until we started trading two for three and Berto missed four of five FT’s. It’s the trading part that killed us, and that was due to defense.

          • I thought Barton ran the show pretty well to start yesterday. Starks was still a liability though. It was amazing to see one of our guards step into the fray to gather defensive rebounds and move to transition quickly. Barton and Burton worked well with passing sequences early. It’s not like hockey where the set-up guy also gets an assist, but I tend to look at it that way in hoops also. A nice entry or swing pass gets the guy open. It’s almost unfair sometimes that the last pass gets the assist.

          • Starks should be a third guard off the bench like Vinnie Johnson back in the day. Can shoot his team in or out of a game. BDC should get corporate sponsorship from makers of antidepressants for Beaver B-ball.

          • I’ve seen only a couple of games and of course the camera isn’t always on CR. When it is, in the close games – which are most of them, he’s like a deer in the headlights. I appreciate Jack’s take on all this – but I would very much like to be the mouse in the corner when other coaches critique CR. George Dohrmann seems to think CR is almost laughable. It’s sad. We’ll never know if any of these players could’ve better performed with a different coach. And – I’ve said it b4 but once more . . . I cannot understand his time-outs i.e., when he calls a time-out after a score instead of letting the game flow.

  26. Like I;ve said all along, this team is talented enough to be 500 in league but continously gets out coached every game. CR has no clue what he;s doing. Offense sucks and defense is non existent.

  27. I like incoming commit Brandon Arnold’s attiitude:

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2013/02/signing_day_countdown_oregon_s_7.html

Doesn’t his number of tackles, solo and assisted, seem low for a safety’s season? I assume Schnell means “solo and assisted,” not “solo and unassisted.”

Also, like the brown jersey. OSU could use some play on that, though not too much or they could end up looking like the Cleveland Browns…

  28. @BrandonHuffman
Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne LB Keishawn Bierria Talks Final Visit to Washington http://recruiting.scout.com/2/1263581.html

    @traglia73
    @BrandonHuffman washington lean now?

    ?@BrandonHuffman
    @traglia73 yeah very much

Looks like he will sign with the dawgs, not much of a surprise as he was looking for a another offer.
I think that does it for this class unless we sign some greyshirts. Moore and Bierria were worth waiting , but I think they are signing elsewhere.

  29. Based on comments I’ve seen from people who read the Rivals article about Bierria’s trip to UW, Bierria was offered by UW, he loved his time there, but didn’t commit and wants to discuss it with his family before he makes a decision. Sounds like depth at UW would keep him off the field for a couple years possibly, which may be a concern. I wouldn’t say it’s over yet.

    • #61 Dane Crane……………..parents can be so cruel.

I fear Mora will become Pete C 2.0. Hope he gets caught cheating sooner. Killer class fUCLA
      has put together.

      • Hey – question about the forums…is there a separate login? I can’t post after logging in on the main page, and my credentials don’t seem to work over there.

        • Yes, it’s a separate login. The forums run PHPbb, this is wordpress. WordPress forums (bbpress) stinks, but they can be integrated. PHPbb is better, but there’s no way to integrate logins, which sucks.

  30. possible new commit today?

    Mike Cavanaugh ?@CoachCavOSU

It’s a great day to be a Beaver. Two more days! Can’t wait. The Beavs are on the rise. #GoBeavs

    • Interesting yes. This is a good example of the Rooster and Sunrise principle. There was a very low level of correlation between early preseason polls and polls at end of season in 2012. Most other predictions were probably better in 2012. So a comparison of final rankings with rankings based on recruiting star ratings in a season where the rated players received minimal playing time (2012), is coincidental. Cherry picking one year for a phenonema that has 4-5 year cycles is weak science as well. The rooster’s crowing does exactly cause the sunrise.

      • Fibbus likes your logic.

I think this one is called abductive reasoning. That might be an easy call since all the predicates are all based on subjective analyses.

But you’re completely correct. There isn’t even a coincidental correlation large enough to call any of it science. I wonder if the author/s have ever heard of Bartoo and seen the number crunching he does.

          • And I dont kiss a$$ with stats from just sister corps like Rivals/SI. LOL

Funny how a Stanford PH. D. is using one year and 63% correct to sell a point. Especially when Vegas favs won 76% this year and CFBMatrix faves from March picks won 77%. It is a poor effort to imitate a tiny portion of The College Football Matrix. I gotta log in and comment today and give that guy some crap about his article.

While talent starts with recruiting, attrition and coaching ability are huge factors going forward. OSU has, in the Matrix, proven to have a great staff at coaching and player development. The attrition factor for OSU though is huge as it is always better than national averages.

If I can input more in the future on angrybeavs dont hesitate to tweet @cfbmatrix email dave@cfbmatrix.com or just text

            -Bartoo

  31. Baseball season has started down south. Yesterday Caltech beat Pacifica 9-7, why is this significant you might ask, well it’s been almost 10 years since their last win. Yes, that’s correct, they had a 228 game losing streak! Don’t you feel better now Beaver fans!

      • Ha ha, I forgot they were the Beavers. But it gets worse, they haven’t won a conference game since 1988 and have a 463 game losing streak in the conference. Their men’s basketball team broke their 310 game losing streak in 2011. OSU has a long way to go to be the most unsuccessful collegiate team nicknamed the Beavers!

  32. Did y’all watch me in the big game yesterday? I was on the big stage while y’all were sitting on your couches watching me. Doesn’t get any bigger than that.

  33. This is awesome. Dontre Wilson flips from Oregon to Ohio State on live tv. Makes viewers sit through nearly an hour of a news broadcast before announcing because he wanted to make it agony for Oregon fans. Still mad that Chip Kelly left the Ducks after he felt like he was going to stay.

    Jordan Whitley ?@JordanWhitley

Wilson said Kelly leaving to NFL was “wrong.” So was making a conglomerate of Oregonians suffer through 52 minutes of Dallas local news

    • and now Ragin is announcing he’s solid with CAL and doesn’t want Oregon. Wonder if they’re gonna go hard after Bierria now after they dropped off him to concentrate on Ragin.

      Johnny Ragin III ?@Glory_IIIERA

Oregon was the dream growin’ up, and I had a nice visit. But My Future’s at Cal, and I can’t wait to get there and go to work! #GoBears

    • The Oregonian’s brief story on Wilson:

      http://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/index.ssf/2013/02/running_back_dontre_wilson_cho.html

Interesting they are going after a 2* back from Texas. I know stars don’t tell the full story, and running in the space created by that offense makes things easier for a back, but it’s still a little surprising to me. His offer sheet has a number of unimpressive schools on it.

      http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Kani-Benoit-131429

I think it will also be interesting to see how Tyner’s UO career pans out with his injury issues, and what could be at least a slight decline in program performance with any NCAA penalties and Kelly’s departure.

    • Flips and puts down precious Nikegon in the process, very nice, but…………….Luck O’ The Beavs….Beavers will finally make a Rose Bowl, play Ohio St and Dontre will shred the Beavs for 200 yards. You heard it first here.

  34. Attitudes like Kempt’s are needed at OSU:

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2013/02/signing_day_countdown_oregon_s_9.html

Kempt prides himself on leadership, and he plans to come in and be competitive and feisty from Day 1 in Corvallis. He understands that OSU has a habit of flying under the radar but as a former Oregon resident — Kempt played his freshman year at Aloha High School in Beaverton — he knows the Beavers are consistently capable of big things.

“OSU kind of has that reputation of starting slow and finishing fast, but you look at this year and they had a hell of a season,” he said. “They’re a very solid program and when they have their extremely good years and they get rolling, they’re a force to be reckoned with.

“I’m excited to be a part of that.”

  35. from Kyle Peko

    Kyle peko ?@kyle_peko65

Just got off the phone with University of Washington coaches lmao trying to convince me to change my mind said I had 10hrs to rethink it ????

    • Doesn’t sound like UW is a threat for him! Any word on his grades status? Is he a lock to show up in the summer or do we still have to worry about his eligibility?

    • Wow. He must not have been admitted at Stanford. Maybe that’s why he committed to SDSU last week. I thought we had given up on him because he was a SU lock. I didn’t think we even offered him because of it.

        • He was viewed as a tweener because not many coaches saw him live. And he’s a nerd, so summer was filled with school/community service related projects. Everyone in the Mountain West wanted him, but he was holding out for:
          1. Stanford
          2. OSU

He was thinking about going to Boise, but then he started to get responses from the two Pac schools he wanted. So he waited too long, and Boise filled that slot. SU wanted him but noted some deficiencies for admittance (AP courses I think). So he had to get those in and still apply. SU usually responds to these players in late January. And I think we backed off him without offering because of his priority list. So last week, he must not have been admitted to SU and jumped on SDSU in order to have a ship.

I guess he got back in contact with Perry or whomever again and asked if he could be considered once again. Or maybe he had an offer standing all this time. Who knows?

He’s pretty much a carbon copy of LJ Moore as far as I can tell. I’ve been told his highlight film is just about all the passes that were thrown his way this last year.

    • that’s funny. Last week I was wondering if Erickson could be talked into becoming the offensive coordinator for Oregon State. Doesn’t have family member playing hs football nearby?

    • Whittingham has been under some pressure to get the offense going after a 5-7 season. Looking at the schedule, it could be worse this year. Not sure where Erickson helps unless it is to develop quarterbacks.

  36. There are rumors that Nico Falah has decommitted from USC. If that’s true, they have 10 verbals left, down from around 18-19 at one point a couple months ago.

And you think Mike Riley can’t close?

    • @adamgorney
#USC commit Nico Falah has denied any rumors he has decommitted from the Trojans.

but where there is smoke there is fire? That class has been crumbling, still they have almost twice as many 5stars and the next best team.

oregon has dropped all the way down to #34, just two in front of the Beavs. If they lose those twins tonight it would be a gut wrencher.

    • As frustrating as Riley can be, he’s no Lane Kiffin. That guy is a complete joke. USC would do themselves a big favor by getting rid of him sooner rather than later.

  37. It seems to me that Cliff K. is often wrong/misinformed, but he has Tua’ua committed and Solomon listed as a Linebacker (which I like). FWIW.

  38. Damien Haskins:
8 carries for 84 yards and a score

For reference, Terrell Newby (#17 RB in the country according to scout.com and a Nebraska commit)
    12 carries for 88 yards.

Darrell Songy: 2 unassisted tackles (tied for 2nd most on the team)

Fred Lauina didn’t register a stat.
