Home Athletics Rebranded Logo

Rebranded Logo

192

My thoughts in order:

  • The beaver looks like it has 1980s feathered hair.
  • Looks like a hockey logo.
  • As bad as it is, it's better than the current logo.
  • Sprague reporting this isn't the new logo. Feeling relief but also apprehension (i.e. it could be worse).

  1. Man…why do we even need a cartoon as part of our official logo anyway? Our mascot is a buck-toothed rodent that eats trees. Even though they are the “most diligent and hardest working animal in the animal kingdom,” they are not ferocious attack animals. So why try to make them what they are not? An orange “O” is all I need for a logo. Keep the mascot on the sideline.

    • I once did surveys in a river that had beaver. Never saw it because the surveys were at night, but every once in a while I’d hear a loud tail slap. Really freaky sound…especially late at night when everything’s quiet. I later learned they will attack in self-defense if you startle them.

      • Yeah, beavers can get really nasty when cornered. They can flat out shred a dog. I still stand by my position – the angry beaver looks ridiculous and is a stretch for most people.

The “tail slap” has about given me a heart attack on several occasions…LOUD.

    • A simple block “O” in orange on one side of a carbon/graphite helmet would suit me just fine. I realize the “logo” goes lots of places besides FB helmets, the block “O” still beats this latest attempt.

  2. I don’t mind it. There’s going to be the initial shock factor where people will be resistant to buying into a new look, but I could see this being popular after a while. I like it more than the currently used logos. It fits in with what I have been picturing our new look to be. Kind of retro-y (yes I just made up a word).

  3. Anyone wonder if they were clever enough to do a test leak and gauge reaction? I wouldn’t normally think so, but with the new marketing guy, maybe?

  4. but also not certain this is even the real thing. I’ll wait until the new stupid rebranding happens in the spring before I form a negative opinion on our shitty design. And believe me it will be shitty. It’s OSU afterall

  5. It looks like one of those things that are 2 different pictures (is it?) look at it one way, well you know the rest.

The logo doesn’t particularly concern me. What does, is the OSU blurb on televised games – it’s horrible. I’ve seen middle school projects that were classier.

  6. Just got back from a 20 mile bike ride and with fresh eyes, and now I kinda like it. Don’t love it, but it is definitely better than the current logo.

  7. Interesting. Some positives but more so if there is alot more to come. Is it mid field worthy? Good that is has more energy and does look something like the golf club rumor we heard about. You have to break down all the clues to see if this is likely legit or not and how much more is yet to be revealed.

  8. not as bad as the current pos does not make it good. but it is better.

i had a similar thought to someone above, this may just be a test balloon to gauge reaction.

  9. OT– but the Beavs are attempting to play BB. I don’t know why but Roberto never gets a call his way. Beavs down 23-14 midway 1st half.

    • I couldn’t believe that the elbow to the gut in the Utah game was a no-call, even after they reviewed it. I was thinking the Utah guy might get tossed.

  10. Beavers had four chances to extend the lead to 9 or 10 points and do nothing. Buffs then hit a three and are back within 4. These five or six point swings to the negative have defined the Beavs this season.

Collier is having an awful game too, it seem like every time he tries to finish, he gets his shot blocked. I don’t remember it being such a problem last year. Has he put on weight or has the rest of the league finally realized he’s left-handed?

  11. God Damnit…..one game…just one f-ing game…..execute with intelligence and precision down the stretch…..am I asking the impossible????

  12. All the Beavers had to do was take care of the ball and they win this game. That’s it. Colorado can’t stop them, but they go ahead and give away a game

  13. This is the classic “Beating yourselves”. If the Beavers have 15 turnovers instead of 21 and this game is almost over with a Beavers win.

  14. When the Beavers went up 56-49, it really felt like they were gonna pull away and win this game, then they proceeded to turn it over 11 times in the final 11:09

        • I decided to give you the benefit of the doubt and went and looked at the box scores of all our conference games. I would buy your argument, but it seems the better the competition, the more turnovers we have. only 3 games have we had single digit turnovers. So in your opinion if turnovers have not been a major issue, what is the biggest problem with this team?

          Colorado – 21
          Utah – 8
          Stanford – 14
          Cal – 10
          WSU – 9
          UW – 12
          USC – 14
          UCLA – 17
          Arizona – 14
          ASU – 8
          UO – 14

          • I think 14 and under turnovers is something I could live with, when it’s 15 and over then it’s a problem. They’re averaging about 13 and a half turnovers a game, that’s not too bad, issue with this team had been defense for a while, but I think it isn’t even a single issue. Defense has been getting better slowly, outside of the Stanford game. But every game it’s always something different that goes wrong. One game it’s defense, the next game it’s turnovers, next game it’s defensive rebounding. It feels more like a mentality thing. They for whatever reason cannot put together a complete game. They improve in a certain area and then struggle in an area where they’ve been playing well. If OSU has an average turnover game, they win tonight and start building confidence moving forward. Instead they have a horrible game with turnovers and it costs them the game. For their next game they’ll probably take care of the ball, shoot well, make their free throws but get crushed on the boards.

          • since I had no way of watching the game and thankfully did not witness it, was it CU’s defense or OSU just not taking care of the ball or both. Not sure its mental. I think its shitty coaching. Especially the defense. But I haven’t watched much lately to notice if it has improved or not.

    • This loss is squarely on the Angry Muskrat. Is there any doubt if we had adopted the Saber Toothed
Rivercat logo prior to the game we would have killed the Buffs? Logos have consequences people.

  15. Watching live (big mistake) at the 14:22 break Beavs up 5. Wife says “they might win this one” Meā€¦”No they will find a way to blow it.”

And verily thus speaketh the bonehead and it came to pass. 2-10-13

  16. That can’t be the real logoā€¦I’d be surprised if Nike let something like that logo get through if they want to maintain their reputation for logo design. It’s better than the current Beav logo but it’s too unrefined to be a polished and finished logo. For exampleā€¦the white highlights in the eyes are amateurish looking.

  17. I vote OSU either eliminates mens basketball or drops down to a weaker conference. It’s apparent the athletic department doesn’t give a shit about the program and doesn’t want to spend money on it.

  18. At the half I went and got Chinese take-out. When I got home the wife had switched to watching season 1 of Portlandia. She said that we could switch back to the game if I really wanted to but I said no I’m pretty sure of the outcome and I don’t need to watch another train wreck. Thanks for the confirmation guys.

    • why on earth would you want to watch that shitty show? I watched it once. And it was an hour of my life I will never get back.

    • Portland risk progressing up it’s own ass if it believes it’s press too much, and I think the show is a kind of commentary on that. i think Portland is one of the more liveable “big” cities, more like a big town or small city really….but I’d prefer it over Seattle, LA, etc. There was a Portlandia piece on a “mixologist/bar tender” I thought was hilarious and pretty damn accurate for some establishments.

What cracks me up is going to a restaurant and listening to people waiting for their tables and you catch conversations and they KNOW they’re going to love it, because they’ve been told they should, not because they’re thoughtfully evaluating food, service, and competitive offerings and prices…

Bland, ubiquitous offerings like the pearl district can make you wonder if they place is going to keep any real soul to it, I certainly hope so.

I don’t think Portland needs hockey, MLB, or NFL, all of whom threaten to fuck and run “their” city every time the want a better stadium, but I think it’d be fun if they had a decent stadium to host a “neutral site” civil war football game every 3 years…yeah, I know, those games aren’t supposed to leave campuses or be neutral, but it’d be entertaining if one side were reserved for the orange and black, the other side for green/yellow/white/silver/gray/black/fuchsia/whatever……

I like to visit Portland still. So far. There’s still some genuine places there.

  19. No self-respecting hockey team would take this as their logo.

The official reveal will be at the spring game…hope it’s better than this.

  20. It’s a Beaver for godsakes, there’s never going to be a great result, we can only hope for something that is not a mockery. “Luck O’ the Beavs” is that the mascot is a Beaver and that die was cast many years ago.

    • “Itā€™s a Beaver for godsakes, thereā€™s never going to be a great result,”

That’s why it may be better to not incorporate it into a logo – its difficult to make look good. The other point that occurs to me is that a beaver is a pretty distinct animal and most people have an image of a buck-toothed animal with a flat tail. Does it actually help to make a logo out of a beaver and put it on a helmet or uniform? OSU’s trying to figure HOW to do it, without first asking IF they should, probably because they’re trying to distinguish themselves from Ohio State University (block O) and Oklahoma State (OSU with same color scheme).

Leave it off, go for the block O, and have some student run around on the sidelines and grandstand in a beaver mascot costume…you want to distinguish the team from Ohio State or Oklahoma State U, beat them in a meaningful bowl game.

  21. If there is anyone out there who still thinks Lane Kiffin is an upright and honorable coach, then read this. He just screwed this years running back recruits by firing the guy who they thought they were going to play for. Kiffin knew he was going to let this guy go and he waited until he had commitments from kids and then slapped them in the face.

Kennedy Polamalu will not return as offensive coordinator/running backs coach at USC, it was announced Sunday by Trojans coach Lane Kiffin.
Polamalu is the fourth coach to leave the USC staff since the conclusion of the 2012 season, following assistant head coach Monte Kiffin, linebackers coach Scottie Hazelton and defensive backs coach Marvin Sanders.

  22. Re: the logo

I still like it better than what we have. But the double dotted eye just bothers me for whatever reason. i do like that it’s orange, not brown. At least they got that right. I think it would be a little better if it was softened a little… not so jagged. And maybe it’s placed on an O with a beaver tail pattern to round it out?

My favorite beaver logo by far is the newer Parks Canada logo. But the old one is cool too. Maybe we should just lease that one.

  23. After live trapping and studying Nutria in the Andes (they are not happy campers when you remove them after an icy night in a foam padded leg trap), after having stepped on (not full weight, not on purpose) a real Beaver (Castor canadiensis) in the Trinity River of Norcal (again not happy camper) and after having a Mountain Beaver (Aplodontia rufa) brush against my leg in the Siskiyous when I foolishly blocked the path to a burrow (repeat, not happy camper), I think that I can say that this logo does not look like any of them.

    • If Gopher won’t say it then I have to…..MB, you have experienced much Beaver in your lifetime in a variety of different positions and I honor you for that.

  24. Hunt’s ‘Beaver’s by the numbers’ has been a painful read lately, But this piece from today’s installment was a kick in the sack:

“6 ā€“ Pac-12 games the Beavers have led at halftime. If they had kept those leads, they would be 6-5, two games out of first place and just a game behind Oregon.”

  25. Not much of a video, nothing on the recruits themselves, but good to see Matt Moore coming back on an annual basis. Hughes looks bigger, Riley needs a tailored suit and a tie width from this century, Jacquizz looks like his Falcons helmet was too tight all season. And he JUST took it off. Weird.

OT – Like the “Brick Squad!” tribute at the beginning…couple of good shots at PettiboneHead’s favorite inflatable helmet, terrible, music.

  26. I’m hearing this is the real logo. Nike does three things. They design. They market. And they distribute.

This would be a failure of the latter. Reading some of the comments out there, some people think the Beaver Shark is also a design failure. I think it’s better than the angry brown muskrat with the lousy script. So I guess I think it’s a design meh.

All we have to do is wait for the marketing? Maybe they’ll get Mars Blackmon for that.

Apparently a shipment was distributed early and actually placed on some shelves before they were recalled.

    Major fail.

  27. http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/531701_10200653622531682_493889619_n.jpg

The more I see this the more I think it’s been faked. The t-shirt looks way too flat in the area with the logo, especially considering the sizing sticker has a curved appearance. It’s almost like there’s a piece of cardboard inside the shirt to keep it flat, but obviously there’s no cardboard in there. Also, the swoosh isn’t centered. Another cue, look at the shoulder area to the upper left of the photo. The orange changes colors up there. Poor blending by the photoshopper. This is probably why the version you’ve seen on other websites has that portion cropped out. The first time this logo was posted was by this guy on facebook:

    http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10200653622531682&set=a.2551067144684.143578.1494044478&type=1&theater

      • There are quite a few inconsistencies between the logos on these 2 shirts. forgetting the outline on the black shirt, the other parts of the logos have their own distinct shapes.

        • I thought so at first too. But it’s that damn outline on the black shirt that throws off the visual. They’re the same.

They should have made a pencil-thin outline instead of the broad one they created.

          • Agreed on the outline. The broad outline makes the black shirt logo look kinda blocky and odd,at least compared to the non outined version.

The design is an overall improvement compared to the cursive muskrat. I’m not in love with it but I don’t hate it either.

It does have a bit of conehead going on. “We are from France”…

          • I’ve seen a lot of comments on the shape. It looks like a beaver shark. It looks like an axe head. It looks like a wing. The teeth form an N. The eyes are vacant.

Still, everyone likes it better than the angry muskrat, which apparently is now a “concerned” beaver. But I think it’s funny that all of the usual uniform/logo critics think the old Benny logo is the best of the three.

          • Read one comment that the current “angry beaver” looked like it was in the middle of a seizure. Pretty damn accurate.

Leave the beaver off the helmet, go with a orange, black, and maybe even white, block “O.” Put the old Benny Mascot pic on the field (maybe give him an “angry” eyebrow with his smile). It would then look like “big boy” college football…..god what an annoying term/cliche/reference point that’s become. Thanks Nick.

      • Logo designs go through many, many mockups before a final version is decided upon. I’d place money on it that Nike willingly “allowed” THIS highly revised mockup version to leak out, but I bet it’s not the final version.

    • Those pics don’t look faked to me. They look like a distribution fail per Jack’s source.

I stepped back and looked again today, and I like it more. Still not “WOW,” but better.

Or maybe I just hate the current version that much.

I still would prefer something that incorporates the other distinctive characteristic of the beaver, it’s tail.More along the lines of this…
      http://dribbble.com/system/assets/110/31664/screenshots/613896/beaver.png?1340286356
or the logo Jack found in Canada.

      • Kind of looks like a buck-toothed cat raising its head from a bowl of milk, but I agree with you, the integration of the distinctive tail was pretty well done.

I think people need to stop trying to make the beaver look like its an aggressive predator.

  28. The biggest problem with this logo is it doesn’t sum up the football team or university. I thought they were going to try to come up with something blue collar and old school. This logo doesn’t convey that at all.

  29. The logo: keep in mind Univ. of Oregon had several logos that went public that never “flew” before the final toilet seat was revealed. These included duck heads and other failed attempts at depicting their mascot.

    We’ll seeā€¦

Don’t you think this Beaver logo is a decoy/fake/teaser/nothing to do with Nike for the final presentation?

    I do.
