The rotation is Wetzler, Moore, Fry.

Very excited about this team. So exited I’m making a thread a day early, hopefully drum up some excitement from you guys (nobody seems into baseball). Legit shot at a championship if they stay healthy.

Go Beavs!!!

  1. nobody into baseball? I have it on good authority that the dugout club pre-season function sold out in record time and had a lenghty waiting list in case of cancellation. I find it curious that the osubeavs.com website is waiving the fee for listening; glad to see it, though hard to read the logic behind that decision. probably because some stations were streaming anyway. I’ll be going to next weekend’s tournament, and yes, planning on going to Omaha again.

  2. Jay Reese was interviewed on am620 this afternoon. I only heard part of his comments, but did note that he claims Andy Peterson has added 15 lbs of muscle. He may have also said that Dylan Davis has added muscle as well.

In looking at last years stats I was somewhat surprised to see that Kavin Keyes hit .316 last year, I would have guessed less. Anyway, still waiting for him to live up to what seemed to be greater potential. BTW, can ya believe he is now a Sr.?

GO BEAVS ! I’m ready for tomorrow!

  3. They better not lose to Nebraska or I will never hear the end of it from my stupid brother.
Conversely, if we win the games, I am going to give him a major ration of shit.

  4. I’m into it…anybody want to sponsor a new senior softball team I’m putting together this year?–travel from WA to UT through the summer/fall

  5. Jim Wilson not as bullish on the Beavs as other writers. He says they will hist a regional, but won’t be a top 8 seed. Stating that replacement of three key defensive positions too much to overcome. Ibwill reserve judgement until I see them play, but that is the main concern or question mark.

  6. Oregonlive has freshman Logan Ice likely starting at catcher. Interesting because I had heard rumors that Esposito had been suspended for a pretty significant number of games but I hadn’t seen anything official from Pat Casey. Perfect Game had Ice ranked as the #230 high school player in the country.

    • Don’t remember any suspension talk, figured it was a combination of his .135 average and JRod’s fine play. At any rate, Casey named Ice several days ago and no mention of Espo was reported at that time.

O-live also carries a comment from a reader claiming to have visited with Wetzler at the Impulse recently. I wonder what kind of guidance coaches are giving about that place.

EDIT: Ooops, I first read your comment to mean a suspension last year; makes more sense that you are speaking of a current suspension. Possibly explains Casey’s failure to mention Espo.

EDIT EDIT: OK, it’s all clear now. The Trib article on Wetzler below includes mention of an indefinite suspension for Espo…violation of team rules.

  7. Aaron Fitt ?@aaronfitt 23m

Oregon State’s Ben Wetzler won’t pitch this week due to an NCAA eligibility issue stemming from draft last summer. Agent rules must change.

  8. Aaron Fitt ?@aaronfitt 23m

It is unclear when (or if) Wetzler will return to action – this process is atrocious. And for this to come out on eve of season – pathetic.

  9. I don’t know if I like today’s lineup. Would have like to see Keyes higher in the order. The throw to second by Ice on the steal was not even remotely close to the base. Not good if we struggle at C.

    • Jay Reese from Bend is announcing, same as last few seasons. I usually cut him some slack since I don’t think he has the normal support in doing the broadcast.
The online stats say the last error was on 2B but Reese called Casper….I think Reese got that one right, but hard to be sure w/o eyes on.

  10. let me get this straight, the cheaters have major violations twice in 5 years, take 2+ years to investigate and put them on probation…..Wetzler makes a educational decision of pro baseball vs last year in college, decides OS and is now suspended the night before the season opener. Once again if you have money and cheat the NCAA leaves you alone, the rest of us makes them feel real powerful….

  11. The Beavs have hired the “Cleaner” Mike Glaser, same one Uo hired. The NCAA wants a 50% season suspension. OSU is proposing 10% season. What a joke the NCAA is.

    Rally Beavs!

  12. I can’t stand Casper. Dude has the longest swing and simply cannot hit. I guess Casey thinks steady at bats will help him? Maybe. But he has a long/bad swing.

    • FINAL, not pretty but it counts!
Initial reactions: Hendrix, Peterson, and Ice looked OK. Keyes disappointing. A good chance for the BP to get some work. Lessons will be learned.

  13. More on Wetzler’s situation from Gress at the G.T: “Emily James from the NCAA tweeted that the “NCAA has not received a request from Oregon St. & his eligibility has not been determined by the NCAA”

WTF! No request? This cannot be BDC sitting on his thumbs, with the “Cleaner” involved for several weeks there simply must be more to the story.

  14. Other scores of note, Miss State loses to Western Carolina 3-2, Fullerton hammers Wazzu 12-0, Portland over UCLA 1-0 and #2 Virginia loses to Ky.

  15. So I have a couple observations from yesterday’s game.

    1. Keyes was put in the field and had errors? I did not see that coming. :/
    2. Wasn’t Casper a project last year? Don’t we have some younger Mendozas we can throw out there for shits and giggles?
    3. It looks like Conforto/Hendrix/Davis is going to be a fun OF to watch this year.
    4. It sounds like Morrison and Ice are the real deals.

  16. OT: From Football Scoop, check out the background of the guy oSu ended up with instead of Cav.

Oklahoma State: Mike Gundy has announced the hiring of Bob Connelly as offensive line coach. Connelly has coached offensive line at Texas A&M Commerce, Cisco Junior College, Cal State Northridge, San Jose State, Washington State, Alabama, UCLA, UTEP and Arizona State. Just days ago Connelly had joined the Georgia Southern staff. He spent the 2013 season at Gilbert (AZ) High School.

    Well traveled??

  17. Hendrix sitting out because he had a fingernail ripped off by a gonzaga cleat yesterday, while diving back to 1st. sounds like he got his hand stomped on another time after that too

  18. And Jack, concerning Oshie the star of USA over Russia hockey said this: When asked by a reporter how it feels to be an American hero, Oshie replied, “The heroes are the ones in camo.” Good for him.

    • Except for those Air Force doods. They need to get a real job.

That was an intense game. And to think, Oshie was the last man on the roster. I think they heard he was from Warroad and thought he was Canadian.

      • From the NYT: Warroad, population 1,781, a civic snow globe six miles from the Canadian border, has as many indoor rinks (two) as red lights. The town has sent seven hockey players to the Olympics since 1956 — four of them from the same family, the Christians — and each one has returned with a medal. The hope is for a pair of golds at the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia

        • Warroad is also one of the spots you let in for the Lake of the Woods. Usually you hitch a ride somewhere like Oak Island or Angle Inlet then canoe out from there. But you can also hump it straight north to Birch or Sand Points. Although, I haven’t been there since the late 80s, so I wonder how they handle needing passports and such now.

Everyone had a Christian stick growing up. I’ve met the brothers as well. My cousins played with them in 1956 and 1960, but it was through the Noah family that I met them.

  19. NU’s just having a hard time getting it over the plate. Two runs walk in to make it 11-2 in t8 (three walks on 14 pitches), and they finally decide to replace the P?

  20. The new pitcher just walked two and Beavs get another run via BB. 11 BB from Nebraska pitching and Conforto with a two out two RBI single, 15-2

  21. Jay Reece calls Fry’s start “brilliant”. Now I wouldn’t say that as he gave up 9 hits but on the positive side only two runs and NO BB. A good outing and a positive sign of things to come.

  22. Keyes makes the putout after dropping the ball, 2 outs. Nice day at the plate for Keyes but is he unfocused, nervous, or what in the field?? Several weak plays in addition to yesterday’s 2 E’s.

Just rust? I’ve always liked his hustle and “no quit” attitude and feel he has high baseball IQ.

And, he is involved in a 7-6-3 final out. Always felt his head is in the game at all times.

  23. Baserunning error ends the game but not before huskers score 5 in the b9. Mak Fox makes his first appearance and gives up a double and single to the two batters he faced. Good thing we had the 7 run 8th. Final 15-7.

  24. Wazzu beat Fullerton. Cal beat Texas for the second time. Indiana lost a doubleheader to Tex tech. Asu beat Baylor. Ucla crushed Portland after losing last night. Usc and Utah each won. UW and Arizona lost. Stanford lost for the second time to Rice.

    • That is just a ridiculous line. 151.5 o/u is about right, but I’m starting to see why Nikegon is 7-6-1 at home ATS. I wouldn’t put anything on the Beavs straight up with our whopping .200 record away from home. But if you’re 7-6-1 picking spreads for a team who is 11-3 at home, you’re really bad at setting lines… or you think they’re way better than they are.

      • We should have known that the fix was in when the Beavs cut it to 2 with around 5 minutes to go. The block on Brandt and then Moreland called for a foul on the offensive board were absolutely terrible calls. Then the only charge called all game wipes out a three point play opportunity for Nelson. Those 3 possessions sealed the game for the Ducks.

  25. t4 opens, not with a walk, but an error puts leadoff Ice on base to start the inning. So each inning has started for the Beavs with the leadoff hitter on w/o a single hit. Make ’em pay!

  26. Walks, errors, and mental lapses; Pacific appears outclassed today, how long do ya wait to start pulling starters to give young Beavs game experience?
If things turn, I know it is my fault.

  27. Stanford avoids the Rice sweep winning 12-3 today.

I guess Schultz didn’t like the long inning. BB and basehit to leadoff the inning followed by a WP. Jay Reece impressed with Ice. Schultz walks the bases loaded and nobody out.

  28. Hendrix with a bases loaded double and Conforto with a sac fly, Beavs 11-2.

Cougs tie it in the t9 only to lose to Fullerton in the bottom half.

  29. Other than Max E it appears that the pen needs to get a lot better.

    At 3b Hamilton>>Keyes
    At 1b Keyes>>Casper
    In CF Hendrix>>Gordon

  30. Takeaways from the Casey interview played before the game (taped Sat. am).
**Hamilton WILL make his way into the lineup
**Ice may see time playing 1B
**Morrison may see time at CF

    • But the strong majority of the time Hendrix will be in CF and Morrison will be at SS. Their current lineup is probably when they’ll be at their best defensively and will be at their best offensively when you swap out Clark for Keyes and Kavin is solid at first base

  31. Hendrix hit by pitch. Sounds like it hit him in the back and crippled him momentarily. That guy’s body is taking a beating this weekend.

Also, what’s with the rankings at baseball america?
    http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/virginia-remains-atop-bas-top-25/

Virginia goes 2-1 on the weekend and holds onto the #1 spot. Cal State Fullerton goes 2-1 and moves up from #6 to #3.

Not that the ranking matter at all right now, but if you’re going move other teams down for losing, how do Virginia and CSF maintain their place or even rise?

    • Virginia held onto the spot and their 2 wins were against two currently unranked opponents as well as losing to an unranked team. But a lot of writers look for any reason to keep their preseason top ranked in top 3-4. Just the way it is

    • Yep, if you’re gonna raise a team from 6th to 3rd for losing a game to Washington State (and nearly losing two) then wouldn’t you wanna rank Washington State? Oh, if only I could be bad at my job and keep it.

  32. Wish the Beavs had more speed. Over and over they fail to take the extra base and/or score from 2nd on singles.

What’s Hunter Jarmon’s status? Is he on the team?

    • I don’t see him making an impact unless there is numerous injuries.

He’ll likely just get in blowouts or in pinch running opportunities. Hopefully he just gets in a lot of work in practice and can come in next year and compete. Casey must think a lot of him to keep him on the team when they are competing for Omaha.

I wonder what he’ll do when spring practice arrives.

    • Jake Thompson played American Legion ball as the star pitcher for Florence. The Corvallis American Legion team (including Jeff Hendrix) hit Jake decently, as I recall. Now they are teammates. Neat deal to see these Oregon kids doing so well at the next level.

      • Was Jake a pretty good control pitcher? Seemed today to be behind the count often. Given the advantage pitchers are said to have early in the year I was a little surprised.

I believe the Beavs are averaging 11 LOB/game. Had hopes leaving 8 yesterday would start a trend in the right direction.

        • Part of the reason theyre leaving a high number of guys stranded is that theyre getting alot if guys on base. Not a bad problem. You cant bring them all home. Curious to see if Wetzler ever gets back, because in the meantime, the bullpen will only get stronger as guys get more pitches than they normally would have.

          • Offensive stat line for @Beaver_Baseball thru four games: 40 runs on 42 hits, and *34* walks to 21 K’s. #GoBeavs w/ early plate discipline.

          • Fair enough, I’m just a little more concerned than you here. When the level of competition goes up and the BB’s are harder to come by I hope that, “you can’t bring them all home” doesn’t result in too many close losses.

        • “Was Jake a pretty good control pitcher?”

As I recall from watching Jake pitch in American Legion games, Jake’s control was average (would walk two or three guys a game) But Jake threw a 90 mph fastball along with a sharp curve. In American Legion ball, that made Jake a power pitcher who could blow away the weaker hitters with fastballs right down the middle. He knows that won’t work at this level. As a result, perhaps Jake is nibbling at the corners more than he should — don’t know, because I haven’t seen Jake pitch yet for the Beavs. Hope to remedy that soon.

          • Thanks silver, always appreciate your input.
The nibbling at the corners thing makes a lot of sense. Whether he got behind counts or not, he turned in a respectable performance for sure.

I know you are familiar with Hendrix, have you been surprised at his hitting so far?

          • “I know you are familiar with Hendrix, have you been surprised at his hitting so far?”

            Yes and no.

In American Legion, Jeff showed quite a bit of pop in his bat, and got a lot of clutch hits. But Jeff also had trouble hitting curveballs (especially from left-handers) and struck out too often.

Jeff is a naturally talented athlete. Jeff starred in football, basketball, and baseball in high school. He’s one of those kids who can pick up pretty much any sport and be good at it quickly. He’s also a great kid — humble, hard working, respectful, and kind. The kind of person who is liked and respected by all of his teammates, as well as very easy to coach.

Now that Jeff is focusing full-time on baseball, and getting excellent coaching at OSU, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jeff continues to get even better at the plate, and in the field. Couldn’t happen to a nicer kid….

  33. Some takeaways from the weekend series, I’m just looking at the stats for these since none of the games were on TV.

    The good –
A ridiculous .459 team OBP. Good hitting and plenty of walks.
Logan Ice – 6 walks. Nice to see that out of a true freshman.
Caleb Hamilton – Good start. Let’s see if he can keep producing.
Conforto – Looking like he wants to be a 1st round pick.
Starting pitching was solid for the most part.

    The bad –
12 wild pitches. 8 by Eden and Thompson.
The freshman bullpen got hit around a bit.

    Nitpicking –
No homeruns in the warm AZ weather.

    • Around the 19:00 minute mark Parker asks him about no huddle offenses and the evolution of the no huddle offense. You could see him perk up when he answered. Certainly won’t see any changes (as he also got real perky talking about the pro-style offense), but possibly some wrinkles. One can hope.

      • He played for Sam Wyche, so he should know about the evolution of the no-huddle.

Btw… no huddle has nothing to do with whether or not a team runs a spread, a spread option, a pro-style or the triple option. Cincy ran it in the 80’s with Anderson and Esiason. Buffalo ran it with Kelly in the 90’s. Peyton Manning has run it for a majority of his career, and Tom Brady is now running it. None of them use anything but pro-sets with a couple elements of the run-n-shoot mixed in here and there.
