Great time of the year: Baseball plays 4 beginning Thursday, FB practice continues, WBB with a BIG game Friday, and……MBB coming off a win to face Tree tonight!

The last thread was a good one, speak up if a baseball only thread is wanted before conference play begins.  Meanwhile lets use this one like the last…general.

FB info is sketchy at best right now, reporters only seeing the last 20 minutes of daily practice. That may change next week, as mentioned on the big O podcast, there will be a scrimmage which MAY be open to scribes (and public???).

From reports so far, it is hard to asses how the Beavs QB competition is going. Luton seems to be receiving the most publicity but that may be cause the reporters find him more interesting. Of course, the coaches seem to have built up his possibilities prior to the start of spring ball.

Down south, Slick Buddha has already offered over a hundred for 2018, including 9 QB’s. He has installed one assistant as “QB/TE coach”. Willie already has said he’ll call plays and be involved in coaching QB’s, doesn’t sound like much of a delegator. A few of his assts have clauses which waive their buyout if they move on to specific jobs, is this common?

Wouldn’t read anything into practice reports since so little is observed by the media. Only injuries would be concerning.

I’m reading the QB rotation in practice to signify that the coaching staff is giving Luton the chance to win the job, or perhaps more accurately lose the job, contrary to what was said about McMaryon being the default guy. Not that I’m upset with that denouement, just sayin.

Andersen investing more time this year in understanding the offense, at least according to Kevin Hampton at GT:

Andersen has tried to be as involved as possible with the offensive side of the ball.

He admits that he has a lot to learn and that he’s making progress.

“I learn every day in that meeting room. I learn a little bit more about the offense. It’s still a foreign language to me,” he said. “I try to get into that without being in the way and learn on the run with the players and the coaches.”

Andersen said that it’s much easier to break down the different components that factor into the success or failure of a play.

“You learn the personnel even more when you know sitting in those films with the offensive coaches exactly what a young man is supposed to do,” he said. “It’s easier to see why that play was successful, maybe why that play wasn’t successful so many times.”

I’m a major Team Andersen guy. I feel he’s the right coach, at the right time. I love the direction he’s taking our program, and I guess more importantly I love the fact that he’s got GPA rising, off the field issues almost null and void, and he really seems to care about helping mold these 18 year old man children into good men.

The only thing that really seems off to me is his perceived lack of knowledge on offense. He was a college center correct? And he’s been a football coach for what, 20 years? Head coach for 7+ years. Football isn’t rocket science. How can he know so little? He seems to be a straight shooter but Is it just a cop out because he like to focus on D?

He must realize the Defense is close to being very good. This isn’t the BIG 10, 12 or SEC where 14 points will win you a game. in the PAC 12 you have to have a legit offense also or you will get beat. Must be why he’s shifting focus.

I suspect he’s a bit self-deprecating. Like you said, he played center. And as a D coordinator, he had to study opposing offenses and scheme to stop them.

So I don’t think he knows little, I think he needs to better understand how this team is going to score more – he’s said they need 40+ points per game to win the PAC – throw the ball more, the Phillips’ contributions/influence in the passing game, and (hopefully) maintain a strong running game. In other words, “how are all of these offensive guys going to meet the goals I’ve set for this team?” kind of approach.

    RADIO TAKEAWAYS……….Fun(?) Facts(?):
Clune was asked about the O-side of things, said McM is operating faster now. As for D, he did mention Brandon Arnold as a guy they are counting on.
He brought up the “HC that cares about you” factor which is part of the recruiting pitch. Then got sidetracked by the hosts, discussing GA’s choice of booze.
Anyone else catch anything of note?

On the JoeBeav show, the substitute hosts did a decent job from what I heard. Something new to me was mention of Max Englebrekt being an MBA candidate. His story will be seen on the MLB network sometime Thursday morning……between 7 and 9?

I keep reading in media the major question mark is the offensive line because of 3 graduating and injuries. But then they say the good news is we are really good at run blocking and 4th at pass protection in the P12. I don’t get that you can say the “good news” is “last year” blah blah blah. That was last year… we are replacing so many positions on the O-line that what does last year have to do with it. The offensive line is my #1 worry this year, which btw is a nice change from QB worry being #1. Anyway, here is a read on the offensive line:

He was very vague as if the topic was so poorly presented that he thought the hosts were off their rocker. He strikes me as a tunnel vision ‘Football is serious’ guy who was thrown by the need to discuss booze after talking for 10 minutes about really focused football insights. The 1080 guys are dopes anyway, and need to grow up. Clune made them sound like junior high boys who had just snuck some of Dad’s scotch and were bragging about it to General Patton himself, they sounded so out of step within the end of the conversation.

Baseball today. Let’s see if the offense can get off to a better start. Batting and defensive lineups will likely still be in flux.

Madrigal, Grenier, Harrison, Rutschman, Donahue and Cary have locked up spots. Kwan, Anderson and Larnach battling for the last OF position. Gretler looks to be the last IF. Maybe Atwood challenges some.

Curious to see if Hickey or Donovan make their debuts this weekend. I can only think that some minor injuries held them back last week.

    Football projections:

For entertainment, I try to project the starters for Off and Defense. Based on practice reports, I was most inaccurate with the linebackers. Injury to Ugwoebu and development of redshirt frosh are responsible. Tamoelau at ILB wasnt on my radar. I hope he is overachieving. Neither was redshirt Kee Whetzel at OLB and soph Shemiah Untoa-Whtison.

Interesting that these young LBs have appeared to eclipse Jonathan Willis (junior) who was written about last year.

Also interesting that Liuchan has moved to DE per OSU roster. Some on this board liked him at LB. Per roster he is 250 pounds….

“Every year it’s about figuring it out. This is the 2017 version with different players. I have to figure out their strengths and weaknesses. I have to figure out the opponents’ strengths and weaknesses. And we have to match up to put ourselves in the best situation, and that evolves over time. How we started the season and then with the injuries and with all the different things that happened, we finished as a much different defense at the end of the year than we were at the beginning. And that’s fine. But trying to hone in and figure out exactly what is the best path for this team is always the art of what we do as coaches. ” — Kevin Clune

Only a suspicion, but I think our defense was dialed back a little last season due to new Defensive coach as well as having to adjust playbook based on injuries.

I expect with a second season in, more plays will be installed and with that, there will be discovery of which players now fit best (after a season of development, coming back from injury, etc.) in which packages?

concur. besides which, this proves that all the tumult surrounding the “loss” or recruits who are RB’s is mis-placed anxiety. RB is the one position in football–high school, college, or pro–where there is an ample supply of nearly equal talent. Sure, there is the outlying 5 star guy here or there, an Ezekiel Elliott, or closer to home a Steven Jackson, for example, but the bell curve on this position is very wide at the top. Same might be said for WR. Now, losing QB’s, DB’s, or linemen as recruits, that’s a different story.

He’s put up 4 star production but his athleticism shows he’s got a lot of work to do before he can be successful in college.

I think he’s a high 2 star due to size and overall athleticism. The tape shows the competition he was up against was pretty poor. He didn’t really make any guys miss or really make something out of nothing. Many of the defenders were out of position and/or the play was blocked very well. Film didn’t show what he could do when the blocks weren’t there.

Pros – Vision, reads blocks well, good open field runner

Cons – Lacks initial burst, size will limit after contact yards, needs some space to really get going.

He’s a guy who will produce depending on his line. Will challenge for carries as a RS junior. Looks like his mental game is there but needs to put in some work in the weight room.

Donnel Pumphrey, who broke the NCAA career rushing record this year, is 5’8″ 169lbs. I’m sure there a few coaches out there who feel like dumbasses for not offering him because of his size.

As far as Calvin lacking initial burst, do you also think Le’veon Bell lacks initial burst? I’m not trying to compare him to Bell, not even close, but Calvin does have very good patience and awareness of his blocker’s and his defenders positioning. He also uses his change of speed to throw off defenders in the open field. I’m not sure what you’re seeing as far as not making defenders miss. He made multiple defenders miss with his quick jump cuts. He’s very efficient in his movements and doesn’t have an exaggerated running style. I do agree that the film doesn’t show what he can do when the blocks weren’t there but a lot of that is on the runner being patient and waiting for his blocks. I’ve seen plenty of RB’s go from 0 to 100 only to run into the back of an offensive lineman.

        • Bill says:
          VA:F [1.9.22_1171]
          Rating: 0 (from 2 votes)

I don’t think you cited enough outliers as empirical evidence. Le’Veon Bell has incredible burst which allows him to run the way he does (and no other backs run the same way). Running style wise, they may be similar but there is no comparison for athleticism.

In his film, Tyler does not look like a man among boys, which would qualify him as a 4 star. He runs by guys but they are way out of position. I’d say 90% of his TD runs, the defenders crashed down too far and he only had to get by one or two guys. There isn’t a suddenness of speed out of his jump cuts.

This is why I don’t think he’ll challenge for carries for a few years while he hits the weight room to improve his speed. He’s going to need a lot of development to be an effective RB, which is why he’s a high 2 star.

Stars are based on perceived talent, to a lesser extent production, and some degree of hype (this is both good and bad) or speculation. There are five stars who turn out to be busts just as there are two stars who end up developing into a far better player than forecasters thought.

Stars go away once you’re enrolled in a football program? I think most players understand what matters is what you do to improve yourself and put out on the field.

To me stars tell me if a guy is capable of playing on day 1 or later. Then they go away after the first year.

5 stars – Come in and play right away. Would be out incumbent starter. Would start on most teams in conference right now.
4 stars – Compete right away. Contribute and challenge for playing time.
3 stars and below – Possibly contribute but expect redshirt first year.

There was no one in the class who I think will beat out any returning players for a starting job. Don’t really think stars apply to JC transfers, I expect them to contribute right away, otherwise they were a waste of a scholarship.

SPORTS PSYCHOLOGIST (for slick Willie?): Andrew Murray, who is supervising the ucks FB strength coach was previously the senior sports physiologist at the Aspire Academy in Doha, Qatar.

From what the reporter said in a video, he may need to use some of that psychology on Willie. Indications are that Murray is not only supervising the SC, but coordinating with Willie.

BTW: the comment there by “Bruce Duck” is pretty relevant, he says the SC should have used the month long suspension to upgrade his professional certification.

Regarding Taggart v. Grief: I see the only good to come of it for the Ducks is an us against the world rallying cry “Even the Oregonian is against us now, we’ll show them all…”

I don’t think they are wired for such a mindset, because the type of players that have been funnelling through are too attention hungry and entitled to change.

The surprise is that it was reported in such a light at all, given the general love affair with Nike U for most media outlets, including the Oregonian. At this rate Taggart may implode if Uncle Phil starts threatening “Natty now, Buddha man”

I just got the sense early on that coaching Oregon, which was an elite program (until last year) and of course still has elite expectations, was too big of a leap for Taggart. Even hiring Leavitt so quickly felt wrong to me. Leavitt had some serious issues at USF and screwed himself out of a lifetime HC gig because he couldn’t control his temper. It kind of feels like these hardass Floridians who think they know “tough football” are going to shape up this soft P-12 school. Maybe it will work, but it feels like it could implode. A lot of missteps to start off.

Yesterday was a good blueprint for the year. Jump out early and the pitching staff will hold the line.

Heimlich with a fairly efficient outing, 91 pitches for 7 innings.
Britton had a little shaky outing but came out unscathed. Couple walks and a lot of pitches for 2 innings.

Interesting T5 where the Buckeyes got two on a 2R HR; followed up with a bunt which Gretler, apparently, made a great play for the out at first. After two singles, a foul out and swinging K on a 2-2 count ended the inning. Going to the b5, 3-0
Fehmel at 86 pitches, maybe enough for today.

Jon W. doing slightly better today, Hank H. providing very good commentary. IMHO

I bash the Oregon press all the time. They were awful in how they portrayed Riley….and many other things….so, I get it. But you can go many other routes than he’s choosing. For example, I started my own blog and explained how I see things. Many people agreed, and eventually over time Riley exposed himself to all to the point nobody could deny or back him, and reality/truth won. If Willie were smart he’d just write on twitter a letter showing how he viewed the incident and let it go. But, he’s a narcissistic lunatic who is only concerned with his image, not truth.

And, FYI 9 of 11 at the FT!
Those two factors were totally unexpected, very nice to see. Post game radio, Syd said she was focusing on TO’s.

    Dateline: Surprise, AZ
PAC/B1G challenge. Great set up and a beautiful ballpark. Lots of Beav fans. Very few Buckeyes and a very good contingent of Huskers. Amazing the best seats are mostly not occupied as the fans chase the sun.
Game one all went our way and game two nothing went our way. Early season college ball in a nutshell. Here are my observations.
The good: Madrigal is a hitting machine. It looks like he is hitting off a tee. Every ball he hit was a sharp line drive with the exception of one. The DP ball he hit today was two feet from being a two run
RBI hit. He absolutely tattooed his first at bat and was robbed of a probable triple by a nice play by the CF from tOSU.
The team looks to have good speed overall.
The frosh catcher has a great arm and made some nice blocks behind the plate.
Luke H looks bigger and hit 93 on the gun a few times.
The bad: The infield D is not very good. Madrigal and Grenier booted a couple of balls and missed several outs. The throws to first were often off target or sailing. Ohio State looked like the better team today. Throws were on target and no dumb mistakes. The play at second base was a mess from what we have been accustomed to.
Carey misjudged a couple of balls that should have been outs. He also was caught napping and missed scoring on a wild pitch late in the game against Nebraska. It should have been a 11-1 final.
Husker fans were very impressed with our team. “Took us behind the woodshed” was my favorite quote. The guys I talked to sounded like they have realized that MR is not the coach to take them where they want to go.
We drove down to Tempe and took in the UCLA game. The ASU arena was STERILE. What a crappy atmosphere. It really makes me appreciate Williams Arena and Gill.
F22’s, F35’s, F15’s, and F16’s flying over the stadium in Surprise. Very cool.
Discovered a great named brewery…….Belching Beaver! According to my wife, named after me.
    Go Beavs!

Good job by the athletic department getting the game sold out. Nice to see all the hard work by the women’s team has finally been rewarded with a well deserved sell out.

It was a game the team needed to prep for the postseason. A tough grind it out game vs a very good defense. They went lost the lead late and came back to pull it out. That’s what championship teams do.

Hopefully they don’t have a let down tomorrow and win the title outright. It’ll be tough to win 3 straight at the conference tourney but one team has to and I like the ladies chances. If they do that, they have a very slim chance at a #1 seed.

    Surprise report from Surprise:
Donahue had one of the best catches I have ever seen. He is shaded to center and the Neb player nails one down the line. He runs forever and lays out to catch it about a foot of the ground in foul territory. To bad it was not on TV. Sports Center Top Ten play. Awesome catch.
KJ got under the ball slightly on his HR. It was a mile up in the air. He almost got another his next AB.
Adley looked good swinging today. He nailed a pitch that they caught at the back of the track at the 400 ft mark in dead center. It sure looked like a HR leaving the plate.
Tweedt looked good for the first few innings. Was hitting 87-88 mph on the scoreboard gun.
Mulholland struggled and benefited from a really bad call from the HP ump to get a strike out on an obvious walk. It was a big play. The Ump was awful. More on that later.
Max was awesome. He exuedes confidence coming in and delivers the goods. Throws strikes and works fast. 87 on the gun, but he gets some great movement with pinpoint accuracy.

Statistically speaking 3’s and shots at the basket are the most efficient scoring opportunities. You can argue that there is some benefit to shooting mid-range shots to force the D to cover more ground though.

Yeah, it’s hard to argue with Rueck given his track record. It is also hard to discern his entire meaning from some of these interviews.

But it sure seems to open up things for Syd and the other 3pt shooters when the D has to respect Marie from mid range. We saw some of that Sunday and won’t be surprised to see more in post season. Seems like the Stanford game was a turning point for Marie’s confidence. Not particularly confidence in mid-range (that came Sunday) but overall confidence. IMO

For a long time the “book” on Marie and Kolbie was that you could leave them alone and, instead, overload on Syd; that could be changing.

      Here’s ESPN’s note

Oregon State: The Beavers already have an outright Pac-12 title and have had one of the most consistent seasons in America. Oregon State could earn a No. 1 seed if it adds a conference tournament championship — and gets some help. Specifically, failures by any two of the three among Baylor, Mississippi State and South Carolina to reach their respective conference finals could open the door. The Beavers are unlikely to fall out of the No. 2 slot and can only elevate if things go their way.

What is the purpose and benefit of the tourney? I guess I could see a “championship” game when you have conference divisions and everybody doesn’t play each other during the regular season. But that’s not the case here. The Beavs have already been crowned league champs. Also, this sport does not attract a lot fans to games, so I doubt it makes money(?).

The Beavs have beaten Stanford twice, lost to UCLA (now #15) and USC (not in top 25), so there’s nothing to gain. Plus, you have risk of injury playing before the NCAA tourney.

I recognize other teams have something to gain (UCLA, UW, Stanford, maybe even ASU), but it appears the Pac conference sets up its own league champion for potential negative impacts.

You write this like other conferences don’t have the exact same issue. I think it happens for a couple reasons,

      1. Exposure. Conf tournaments get more national coverage.
      2. Money – I think the conference does make money on the tournament.
      3. A chance to steal a spot in the tourney – which at least on the men’s side means more $.

It’s an oddity, but since all other conferences have tournaments, I have little gripe with the format.

I mean why do high schools have conference tournaments to determine spots at state after the regular season?

I understand other conferences have the same issues, but I don’t understand the rationale behind it.

If it makes money (and I would have guessed it did not by the time you have planning, facilities, travel costs, etc.), I get it. Apparently they get enough ad revenue and attendance though.

I also understand there would be several teams with something to gain, perception-wise. However, a chance to steal a spot in the tourney does not seem like a net gain; it likely comes at the expense of another conference team.

          Two parts to this.

From the business standpoint, it brings visibility to the product in a time when people are starting to pay their full attention to it. And if you can add that visibility at even a net zero, you will be repaid in future dealings because your product is valued at least that much more… and shows competent management.

From the fans’ and players’ standpoint, this is why people start paying attention at this time of year. The conference tourneys are last chance saloons. Without them we wouldn’t have had the great run from UCONN men back in 2009. I can’t imagine continuing to watch these games unless I knew the human story could beat back the machine every once in a while.

    WBB awards: Gabby=defensive POY, Rueck=COY

To no avail, Rueck had argued for Syd as POY over Kelsey Plum. Seemed like a pretty good two point case:
1)which team would have been more impacted by the loss of Syd/Kelsey
    2)Syds team won

Marie, along with Syd, was named to the All PAC12 squad.

It’s a good case but it’s not enough to put her over a player having a historic individual season. Plum is everything to them, UW will be fighting just to finish in the middle of the pack next year.

Ionescu as freshman poy. That recruiting miss will hurt for the next three years.

You are probably correct about Ionescu. Wasn’t there talk that Rueck didn’t see her as selfless enough for his system?

Even if she isn’t much of a team player, the ucks could be dangerous.

It will be interesting to watch the progress of Pivec and the other shooters, along with Marie next season. We lost star players last season and were able to surprise folks this time, a lot to ask for it to keep going at this level.
But for now……just win one at a time.

I don’t see a drop defensively next year assuming brown returns, offense will be different. Pivec has a good enough handle to run things. Same questions from last year to this year. Who can replace the leading scorers and defenders?

What’s a weird thing is that Rueck doesn’t even use all of his scholarships. He uses about 12 per year when he has 15 to use. Lose Brown and they’ll have only 11 on scholarship next year.

Twelve is the number for the men. Extra bodies means less coaching for the top players and more potential problems with players getting frustrated with no PT.

Agree with Beavgohper. No such thing as a 15 person rotation so 3 Extra players means 3 permanent people on the bench. Practice becomes more difficult to run.

Might not seem like a big deal, but aside from 3 scholarships you have 3 extra people to coordinate travel for, food, etc… Probably actually ends up being quite a bit of money per player.

Actually nice to see someone being successful while only using the resources they need, instead of automatically taking whatever’s available.

Wonder is he gets additional budget?

I am in no way questioning his success but I’d be curious about other top programs on this topic.
It just seems odd to me that you’d leave that many spots available. Maybe its the norm in women’s basketball.

It doesn’t seem like the playing time issue would be real, plenty of scholarship athletes aren’t getting playing time in any given year without causing major issues. 15 scholarships is still only an average of 3 people per class (if you assume some redshirting). Seems like you could keep a pretty solid balance and it seems like 15 players would be pretty manageable for a 4 person coaching staff.

Whatever, he is winning so a pretty minor thing. Just more of a curiosity I guess.

FYI, men get 13 not 12.

    Heard on JoeRadio today:
GA, in discussing facilities, mentioned that this morning he’d taken 9 or 10 pics with his phone of lockers which weren’t properly organized. Said he was sure the position coaches would respond to the pics he sent to them and have discussions with their players. Lockers likely to be straightened up soon.

This was brought casually, in the course of the discussion. Sounds like a detail oriented delegator, whose style cannot be reduced to fortune cookie verse.

Sorry to burst a few of your bubbles but WT isn’t going anywhere and has full support of the AD. Which I had already stated for obvious reasons but a few of you just can’t let it go………….from the horses mouth

“We’ve got a blip in the radar screen that we’ve got to fix,” Barnes said. “That fix is coming in who he’s recruiting and who’s on the mend.”

“I mean you think about what’s gone on this year, it’s been really hard and very easily could student athletes give up,” Barnes said. “You look at that bench, they’re all in. They are all in, all the time. They’re playing hard and they’re playing for the coaches and they’re playing for the right reasons. That’s a testament to Wayne and his staff. It really is because you could have easily lost folks along the way.”

I don’t believe WT should be let go but there should be some serious scrutiny. Certainly we are a young team without our best player but losing PAC-12 games by an average of 15+ points should never be acceptable or excusable. His offenses have been lackluster for his entire tenure at OSU. Personally, I am not worried about the recruiting misses as I am about his actual coaching ability. Very poor off-ball movement, complete lack of pick and rolls and terrible free throw shooting have nagged his teams for three years now. Additionally, I’m not sure his zone D is any better than CR’s was and why he isn’t using man coverage more often. I don’t buy the excuse that we don’t have the athletes to play man defense. I do have optimism for Wayne but it may be time to look at improvement at the assistant coaches.
I do find it strange that many of you give WT a pass in his third year but Anderson was receiving a heavy dose of criticism until we closed last year on a high note. Not saying either view was right or wrong, just appears to be inconsistent. Anderson dealt with many comparable “tough luck” situations, the same situations you are giving WT a pass on.

I think you see more Andersen criticism because you have more football fans who read/view this website then people who also follow basketball. Over my 10 year sampling of angrybeavs my professional analysis is there’s a stark contrast in the sheer number of different people commenting during the 2 seasons.

Tinkle and Andersen also had 2 different approaches: Tinkle inherited a program with decent talent that also had good experience. There was no drop-off during the transition, and the team improved both seasons.

Andersen didn’t like what he saw in the team he inherited, so he blew the thing up and started from scratch building his way or the highway. Much more polarizing.

When Andersen took the helm, us long timers here had several conversations about there being a couple different ways to rebuild a struggling program. Option A) try not to rock the boat. Insert your philosophy and players over time. Probably will have higher lows, but may then take longer to experience the high highs. Option B) Rip the band aid off. You’ll probably get some real low lows, but if done properly will yield higher highs sooner.

          I see your point.
What about what WT has done is lending optimism for the future?. I have seen improvement on the recruiting front but clearly he missed on the JC guys. What are the other reasons for optimism? Eubanks’ development is the only bright spot I am currently seeing. They are young, with plenty of opportunity for development, but what evidence is there of WT’s ability to develop players? This is an honest question, not a rhetorical statement.

Sorry to burst your bubble but any new AD at any D1 program in last 20 years always wants his own guys at key coaching positions. GA qualifies as a Barnes guy from previous experience. WT is not even close to being a Barnes guy. No matter what Barnes says in public, WT is on thin ice. Barnes first has to figure out the money thing related to buy out and new salaries. Expect Barnes to move next year if WT does not get the team back to the tournament. The happy talk is just that, happy talk. We are talking big money here and entertainment. Beaver basketball is not entertaining.

Maybe not. There are always extenuating circumstances, like not being able to offload the contract or getting close to even on record with a boost in attendance and advertising revenue. But 1-16 should never be acceptable at any D1 school ever. Did Scott Rueck go 1-16 with the dumpster fire that he inherited? There is just too much money at stake for feelings and pleasantries to get in the way…no matter how much we like the people. These and all coaches are not providing research revenue nor academic prestige. The percentage of the student base that they are mentoring for future society integration (jobs) is minimal. They must provide value today for their outlandish compensation. As Whimpy used to say to Popeye ” I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.” Unfortunately, today, you pay as you go and you had better provide value for your services today.
