Beavs at dawgs, series thread

Here we go, the series to get just a bit of the taste of  The Snub out of everyone’s mouth. First game start changed to 6:45 with all games to be broadcast on PAC12.
Casey has publicly downplayed the Meggs/Snub connection, we’ll soon see if the team plays under control and handles whatever develops this weekend.
GO BEAVS!

  1. Once again, here is the link to the GT story with background on The Snub.

Whether it was Meggs, the committee, mid-season losses, or whatever; Casey presented the case well when the decision was handed down last year (for one thing, he had the facts on his side). Now it is time for the team to further their case for post season play this year. Winning 2 of 3 would certainly do that.

Meggs still being on the advisory committee was a disturbing revelation, turns out (according the the JoeBeav show today) members of that outfit serve for two years at a time. Won’t matter if W/L leaves no room for doubt.

    http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/baseball/osu-baseball-beavers-focused-on-the-present-entering-uw-series/article_526b13b4-8d0a-521e-b7a0-e26f8d051540.html

    • Apparently that was the plan all along, been done by Meggs before. However, I understood the first pitcher was supposed to go 2 innings.

  2. Ump missed Strike 3 on a perfect corner pitch and costs us two runs. Catcher did not frame it as good as normal as he hopped a little further out which threw off the ump even though in MLB if framed any better at all that is a strike over 99% of the time.

Beavs miss tieing and beating the streak with this unfortunate turn and the poor throw to 1st by Madrigal.

  3. Well, that was a quick t7.
Six outs to go, on the one hand all the late game wins should encourage players; but OTOH tonight’s lackluster performance in the timely hitting area lead to discouragement.

  4. Not a huge small ball fan but would have liked to see us try to move the runner around there and manufacture one there.

  5. The toppling of “the streak” was inevitable, but I’m super pissed (probably more than I should be?) it’s Meggs and the Huskies that are going to do it.

    • Also annoying because it’s not like the Beaver bats were completely shut down, 11 hits is a healthy number, should lead to more than two runs. It looked like Madrigal was pressing a little on defense, he had another low throw that KJ dug out earlier. Like others have said, it’s high level baseball, you’re not going to win every game, but this one was very winnable against a team that needs an ass whopping. Two more chances.

  6. Baseball is just a crazy game. Chalk this one up in the L column and let’s move on to tomorrow.

Goodnight, God bless, and Go Beavs.

    ~GWH

  7. Well you can talk about the LOB’s but a rare throwing error (tha honestly still should have been handled at 1st) was the difference. Terrible play.

    • Agree, KJ should have forgotten about the out and made the stop.
Still, leaving RISP always hurts in close games.
Stuff happens, shake it off and start a new streak!

    • I can understand that but one or two more runs any time during the game changes the course of the game. Now without LOB I’d not have much to talk about. :P

  8. Is it also correct that those bastard Huskies lost to Utah on the last day of the season and that also hurt the Beavs chances of making the tournament? Utah does not get in if they don’t win the P-12?

I need to see a pounding these last two games those a-holes are getting under my skin!

  9. From an Eggers piece on Grenier, who turned down a $1.5-million signing bonus from the St. Louis Cardinals to play college baseball at Oregon State:

“I don’t know where it will end up, but I like where it’s going,” he (Grenier) says. ” coach Yeskie put it best in a recent team meeting. He said, ‘There’s something special with this team. Nobody knows where it will go yet, but you don’t need to know. Just accept you’re special and go out and play.’

There is more in the article, including Casey’s thinking when a player turns down serious money to develop their game at OSU……. “If I just rolled the ball out and let him do whatever he wants, I’d be cheating him.”

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/354115-233352-grenier-has-no-regrets-settling-into-osu-role

  10. I had a bad feeling about the game last night after we held up the runner at 3rd and only got 1 run. Looked to me like he had a sttong chance to get home. With just a one run lead I actually prefer some small ball in the back half of the game to add some insurance. Seems odd having runns on 3rd and 2nd a couple times a game and failing to get a runner in.

Turn it around today and get the series.

  11. Takeaways from the game,

Even though it’s only one game of the year, it showed the team’s some faults that can really cost a team in the postseason.

    – Offense always seems to be on the verge of a big inning. I think they had runners on in almost every inning.
    – Defense bit them a few times. Not a big issue now but in the postseason these things can really hurt the team.
    – Adley has a very strong arm but a little slow on the pop time. A touch quicker and he’ll throw out over 50%.
    – A lot of hard hit balls. If the weather ever heats up, a few of those deep flies are gone.
    – Madrigal has a pro approach at the plate. Hitting the ball to all fields. Going the other way in the 9th is something to show hitters what do to in that situation.
    – Heimlich battled and battled. Really tough mentally to keep battling after the close calls didn’t go his way. Guy will do fine in the pros.

Huskies took advantage of every OSU miscue and won straight up. UW might have gotten up earlier had they not run themselves out of the inning.

But in the end, even with the costly miscues and lack of timely hitting, they only lost by 1. So now they need to bounce back and hopefully stick it to UW the next two games.

    • They tensed up. Now they know what it feels like, and they can correct it.

And (hopefully) we finally get to see Jake pitch in a deciding game. Anyone got a spread and an o/u on that one?

  12. NCAA just adopted early signing period (December). This is a huge development for the Beavs as they can now better avoid having prospects poached in January when the recruiting buzz heats up. Limit of 25 is also conducive to OSU’s predicament.

    • OSU will benefit from this rule change for now.

Upside – Locking in the recruits earlier will help prevent last minute flips. Smaller schools will benefit from this more. Big schools always come in and poach a recruit from a smaller school at the end. Under recruited guys won’t be flipped.

Downside – Signing recruits with questionable academics will prevent any additional signings to hedge against non qualifiers. Big risk/reward.

This rule will result in a little bit more parity for college football. Really benefit schools who can find sleeper recruits. QBs will almost all sign early with this rule.

      • One things it helps with is when you sign a group of guys early, you won’t need to use resources to continue recruiting them clear through the Feb signing day, so teams will be able to just focus on the remaining spots only and less on damage control.

The part I dont care for is when a player signs in december, only to see their coach immediately get fired after bowl season. It gives the schools more flexibility and the players less

        • There should totally be a rule that if the coach leaves or gets shit canned the recruit can opt-out.

Talking about these kids future earnings potential. And if the new coach isn’t high on the kid or vice versa it could waste a couple years of his life.

      • Just like in football. Actual scoring is not important, it’s how many times you get into the red zone.
LOB is not important. Can you dolts not understand this? That is how you win championships. By not scoring!

        • In my experience and observations, with all the different ways to get on base, a good measure of progress is the following: for every two hits, you should have one run, on average. With 15 hits the Beavs should have scored 7-8 runs last night, but Huskies should have scored 4 runs on their 8 hits.
On Friday the Beavs should have scored 5 or 6 runs on their 11 hits, to the Huskies 4 runs on 8 hits — so Friday should have been a win, but the errors being the difference in that game.

      • When you get a shitload of hits, but you can’t score runs, the following might be happening. Striking out a lot, getting thrown out on the bases, hitting into double plays, hitting mostly singles, not hitting homers. I think at least a couple of those apply to the Beavs over the last two games. When you pitch really well, it can over come a lot of that (which is also happening). Anyone know The Beavs RISP, that might be an interesting stat?

  13. Nice to see the win, but good lord……..7 runs on 26 hits in two games. Both the games could have been blow-out wins. I kind of feel like they are an incomplete team offensively without a couple of true home run threats, but I know that’s a very minor beef.

  14. How did Mitch Hickey look last night?
I was unable to watch the entire game, but his stats in his last two appearances look OK. Is he ready for longer stints in the rest of the season? Seems important to have a righty who can be counted upon.

  15. t3, Mighty Kwan with his second hit of the day. A two out double! LOB hasn’t been a big factor for the Beavs today.
    Scoreless tie after 2.5 innings.

  16. Zip-zip through 4 full.
Jake benefiting from 2 DP’s in 4 innings, he continues to make me nervous…despite his POW award and 1.1 ERA.
Both teams with “only” 4 LOB so far.

  17. Jake Thompson throwing yet another gem. It’s been fun watching him this season. Probably shouldn’t be any more doubts about him at this point

  18. OSU fans, about 1/3 of those in attendance, “owned” Husky Ballpark after the Beavs took the lead in the 7th. Chants of “O—-S—–U” and “Let Go, Beavers” resonated well. Standing O for Thompson when he left in the 8th and the “rise” when Mulholland faced the 27th out were impressive too. I hope Meggs had some recruits there. A Husky fan asks me: “do you always travel this well?”

  19. Wasn’t pretty by any means but they came back and took another series on the road. According to the game recap on osubeavers.com, the Beavs have now won 7 straight series in conference play dating back to last year and 5 of those 7 have been sweeps.

19-2 in their last 21 conference games. Fucking dominating!

This team has played 32 games this year and won 30 of them. Again, fucking dominating!

Jake Thompson is now 8-0 this year and tied for the most wins in the nation. But he still stinks.

Beavs are 14-1 in conference play at the halfway point for them and have a 4 game lead over UW in the loss column. The recap says 5 game lead since UA and UCLA are both 9-6 and tied for 2nd place over UW (7-5). Which is bullshit because you can win games but you can’t make up for losses. 5 (number of UW losses) minus 1 (Beavs losses) = 4. Therefore the lead is only 4 games in reality.

Another series win despite the LOB numbers some of you continue to complain about. Just out of morbid curiosity, instead of continuing to be concerned go look up the LOB numbers of other top 25 teams and report back your findings. Support your concern/argument. I’m too lazy to look it up.

After the series against UCLA in Los Angeles next weekend, Beavs won’t leave the state of Oregon again this season. Only possible reason they would? A flight to Omaha.

After the LA trip the only games not at Goss are 3 in Eugene and a neutral site game in Keizer against Portland. Anyone hear if the midweek game against the Pilots that was rained out has been or will be rescheduled?????

    • You know if Meggs has anything to do with it he’ll try and downplay and Beav success and attempt to get them the shitiest seeding.

      F*ck that punk.

      • Win the conference and it doesn’t matter what Meggs thinks. Right now the Beavs would be the #1 national seed and hosting a regional and super. They just gotta worry about themselves and keep that right foot on the gas pedal.

  20. Happy Easter angrybeavs.
Great win yesterday. Better execution in the 1st inning on Thursday and we still have the streak going. Jake T has turned the corner this year. There were several situations yesterday that in the past would have led to meltdowns. He made some great pitches in pressure situations. He has been awesome this year.
    Is Max E injured?
Is Martinek still with the team?

  21. That’s a ridiculous modification of an opinion. He has been as good as any of them. I cringed in the past when he got into trouble in the 4th or 5th inning but he has been good to great all year long. You keep moving the finish line for your evaluation. Just say you don’t like the kid and be honest about it rather than judging on field abilities. Maybe players can improve dramatically over time given maturity and good coaching. Yeskie is now involved as a factor in your opinion as well, which you also don’t like.

    • It’s more about my confidence in him. If there was an important game, would I feel good with JT on the mound? Big fat no. Confidence in a pitcher goes well beyond record. It’s that I know his fragile makeup, and I know his past.

So, for now I view him as a serviceable 3rd guy who should have an advantage over most 3rd guys we face (which helps explain all the wins).

It’s an accurate assessment for now. I have no idea if I like him. Never met him. I haven’t moved any finish line. Said all along it’s a fluid situation, and if something changed my mind I’d say so. Something changed my mind, and I now think he’s a serviceable 3rd instead pure garbage.

  22. Fair enough, I don’t know him personally either. Nor am I unaware of his past faults, but I am a bit more optimistic as we near the middle of conference play that he has proven this is a new JT.
Hope springs eternal, and I’m trying to shake the old ‘luck of the beavers’ mindset that all will crash upon us at the worst possible time (3rd game of the home super-regional).

He may be the difference between a so-so run to omaha and a special ending at omaha.

  23. I sure would like to see Rasmussen back to form. I remember watching him throw the perfect game against Washington State. That was a remarkable game. I wonder where he fits in? Does he become the mid week starter? Does he take over for a weekend starter, middle relief, or medical redshirt? If healthy we will need him in the post season.

    • Given the severity of his injury and how JT is pitching, I think having him as long-man is the wise move. When (not if) JT throws a dud, Rasmussen is a nice guy to step in. Next year he can return to the rotation.

      • What’s his eligibility situation? I seem to remember true freshman year was the perfect game, last year he was out, this year if he plays would be two with one medical redshirt. Then he would have two more years if not drafted?

    • “I sure would like to see Rasmussen back to form.”
The key is “back to form”, no guarantees that a return to health means a return to prior form. I view his return as possible icing on the cake; a great bonus if he returns to form…….immediately.
I say, bring him back for middle relief……with a short leash.

Best case, and it is possible, he becomes a great story as a significant contributor as a starter in post season play.

      • I could see him as a situational guy for a few batters in the postseason. I thought I read that he was throwing 95 mph off the mound recently. It all comes down to regaining control. The staff obviously believes he can pitch this year, or they would have left him off the roster.
Does anybody know anything about Martinek? MIA this year.

  24. Drew Rasmussen stories:

Perfect game article, March 21, 2015:

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2015/03/drew_rasmussen_throws_perfect.html

Most recent article on his return:

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2017/04/drew_rasmussen_takes_next_step.html

    Redshirt sophomore this year.

The article does not speculate when he would return or what his role will be.

Also, interesting bio/resume on Nate Yeskie:

    http://www.osubeavers.com/coaches.aspx?rc=852&path=baseball

    • I still think Rasmussen makes appearances late in the year. He shouldn’t be expected to be some kind of savior. He’s likely a 7th or 8th inning guy during the postseason.

Should ease him back in. Maybe a start or two in the weekday games for an inning or two. Similar to what UW did in the first two games of the series. It will keep the pressure off him vs coming into a tight game where he’ll have to make pitches right away. He can also stretch out into longer appearances. Once he feels comfortable, then he can come in late in games.

Would be quite a hammer at the end of the game for opposing teams. Rasmussen, Hickey, Englebreckt, and Mulholland. 2 RHP and 2 LHP.

He’s also a draft eligible this year so it’s entirely possible he won’t risk anything and sit out the rest of the year.

  25. UW series recap –

Tough loss on Thursday but excellent bounce back wins Fri and Sat. This series hardened the Beav’s mentality for the rest of the year. It’ll be very hard to knock this team off their rhythm. A team on a roll like the Beavs might get lazy but this weekend showed they are going to fight until the end.

This is the half way point of the conference season. Depth has been the key for this team. Casey meddles with the lineup constantly and guys keep stepping up. Team is hitting over .300 in PAC12 play. Casey can make quick changes if a pitcher out of the bullpen isn’t working.

Schedule is favorable for the Beavs with only one true road trip left to UCLA this weekend. Mid week games have the same importance now as conference games as a national seed is at stake now. Getting home field through the super regionals is the goal now. Obviously the last time they got a #1 seed, they blew it so I don’t care for it but the Beavs made the last 4 CWS as hosts of a super regional.

Last time a #1 seed won the CWS was 1999 (Miami). The last time a #1 seed played for the title was 2004.

  26. UCLA preview – No idea how these guys are only at .500 for the year. 9 and 6 in conference play.

Beavs are in for a very warm weekend. 90 degrees predicted. Ball will be flying off the bats this series. Need to jump out ahead early and get into UCLA’s bullpen.

        • Seemed like that took forever. Weren’t they working on that for well over a decade?
Now I’m looking forward to my next trip to Newport, via Corvallis.

          • Yes. It was shut down for a few years after It was discovered that ancient landslides were causing bridge columns to move for a workable solution. ODOT really turned that project into one ginormous cluster fuck from the get go. They were told up front about the landslides by whoever did the geotechnical engineering yet chose to ignore that information. If I recall that information was conveniently left out when Yaquina River was awarded the GC.

In short, had ODOT listened to the geotechnical enginner from the beginning? Project probably would’ve been finished a few years ago. Most of that is from my poor memory so feel free to research on your own if you wish. Here’s a video someone put up last fall with some shitty music playing in the background

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saawoCAXq-M&t=60s

The new section of road is very nice though. Very wide with passing lanes.

          • Your memory serves you incorrectly. Yaquina River or Granite Coco just did a shit job; over budget, late and had to be redone almost wholly, including the half-ass slide remediation they “installed” and then found didn’t work a year after they were supposed to be done… but were not.

So two years of the private contractor squabbling about how everything shitty was not their fault for one reason or another, ODOT just told them to go to hell. We got $15m back from them, and the Feds fined them $1m because they were just dicks about it all.

It’s not a PPP at its finest. That would have resulted in a toll road instead. But it is what happens when you turn over rote government systems to a for-profit entity.

          • Whiskey and Jack are both correct. Each of their statements tells a part of the story.

You can’t have a cluster fuck like that one without all parties being at fault in some way.

          • I’m not going to comment on YRC’s work, but almost all of it wholly redone? Sorry, but I call bullshit there. I’ve certainly seen my fair share of shit work from GC’s though so I believe there is some truth to what you say. But unless you have first hand knowledge? No. I do have first hand knowledge that ODOT just ignored the geotechnical engineering analysis about the existing ancient landslides. With that in mind, I’d say ODOT bears more of the blame than GRC/YRC as they are the ones that ignored pertinent information and awarded the contract to a company that probably wasn’t capable of dealing with those logistics. ODOT states that GRC knew in the linked article. I can’t tell you if that statement is 100% true but as I stated I CAN tell you that ODOT in fact ignored the geotechnical analysis pertaining to the landslides when they awarded the contract. I guess engineers don’t know shit (sarcasm disclaimer: not an engineer, work in the engineering field)

            http://www.gazettetimes.com/news/local/state-fines-self-over-road-mess/article_c2b2f49c-b770-5b4e-85c7-c436d1440aef.amp.html

Yes the state got 15 million returned to them. Big whoop. They forked out $173 millon to GRC. How much if any of that was federal money I’m too lazy to look

          • None of whiskey’s statement is correct, except that ODOT knew about the slides on site. Yaquina River knew about them as well. They just thought they could half-ass it and save money, so they cut corners.

I may be wrong. Maybe they did these half-ass remediations because they didn’t know the slides existed, and they just wanted to practice half-ass slide remediation where slides just happened to be.

          • And most drainage systems and bents did have to be removed and replaced. A lot of decking was removed as well.

I always thought ODOT was told by someone above to let them slide on schedules and cost overruns. I would buy that as plausible given that the original bid was unrealistic and should have been dismissed for one of two other bids… that still would have cost the state more than just handing it over to ODOT.

You can’t say that public info was ignored by anyone unless you want to believe in a shit-ton of coincidence. But the whole point of a PPP is that they are supposed to be innovative, therefore saving money for everyone involved. YR knew about the slides, but they didn’t break out remediation to an acceptable level according to normal ODOT procedures… procedures and reports that are public info, btw.

I will agree that someone let YR slide for some unknown reason and that the bid was unrealistic.

          • “I will agree that someone let YR slide for some unknown reason and that the bid was unrealistic.”

And who bears the responsibility for that?

“YR knew about the slides, but they didn’t break out remediation to an acceptable level according to normal ODOT procedures… procedures and reports that are public info, btw.”

            And who wrote said reports?

Seems like you only know about half of a story that there’s 3 sides to and come to a conclusion. Which isn’t overly surprising.

I’ll agree that GRC bears some responsibility but stand by my original statement that ODOT turned this project into a CF it didn’t have to be before the first shovel even touched the ground.

You said it yourself in a previous comment. ODOT just could have done the project themselves instead of “handing it over to a for profit entity”.

Who’s fault is that??? And HAD ODOT decided to handle the entire project themselves, where would the funding have come from? Correct me if I am wrong but it just seems to me you have an issue with design-build and/or public/private partnerships. ODOT still had oversight on the project. And even managed to fuck that up.

          • Are you wanting me to name Parsons Brinckerhoff or Cornforth? There was another done for Kiewit around that time, as well as three done by YRC themselves and one done by URS… with about a half dozen supplementals.

All of those were sourced by CCI in prep. All of them can be found or requested as public records, as can the CCI report.

But let’s get back to the idea that some official placed their son-in-law in some completely undeserving appointment where he decided it was better for local concrete vendors to build bridges… where building on grade would be fine… or something like that. I can see nepotism leading to cronyism. I don’t know where you get the idea that easily found reports were not available to all and formed into clear data over the years.

          • You’re not wrong about ODOT as a process, btw. These projects are done a lot and are successful as planned, if not serving the public. ODOT sucks financially at repaving a one-mile stretch on level ground. They are great at major works like this. And this makes sense. Government isn’t nimble enough to mobilize cheaply for small jobs. But they also don’t intentionally cut corners in order to protect their contingencies on major jobs. The latter happened here. That’s all.

          • Jack,

PPP? It’s called a design-build contract you pedantic dunce. ODOT is with their design builder every step of the way monitoring AND approving the process. The failure lies on both parties. $15million was small potatoes compared to the contract award; it appears it was basically a wash with the contractor and state walking away from eachother. If ODOT was fully at fault, the contractor would have made a windfall completing the project. If the contractor was fully at fault, they would have been on the hook for a lot more than 15 mill. Only you would be delusional enough to believe ODOT is capable of building anything efficiently or technical. Oh yes the greedy private contractor taking from wonderful competant ODOT. Classic liberal hogwash. Give me a fucking break.

          • Yes… because it happens on each and every project.

            Right?

It happens all the time, therefore it’s always a wash. Instances where the contractor cuts corners are 50% the fault of the oversight entity.

What you’re essentially saying is that other people make you feel 50% of what you feel. And now that I look down the page, it looks like you act that way as well.

So… what does that have to do with anything? I’m fully aware of how these projects work, specifically with quake and slide remediation. I know precisely what cutting corners looks like. ODOT cuts corners financially in the long term sometimes because of short term cost, sometimes because the tech is unproven. They do not give their subs improper data then hide behind legalese that would cost as much as the project to date to litigate.

But even that’s not the point. In a perfect world, GVA would have just paid us back for 80% and apologized. And we would use them again in the future as we did in the past and do now anyway. These builds occur all the time, butt they are not this conflicted. I would say almost 70% are actually run very well. The problem I have is that the GC gets to skate when the GC is in the wrong on major fuck-ups like this. My gripe is not that they are inherently evil or anything. That’s the parrot language of your world.

I’m sorry you won’t be able to pay your suppliers if you pay us back what you should. But the one bad apple theory shouldn’t get a 50% subsidy from the taxpayers. It shouldn’t hurt too much since you are your suppliers.

As a side, I know many people who work for ODOT who think as you do. When I prod them about why they feel this way, there are some valid issues brought up. But for the most part their anti-ODOT whine is something they themselves don’t believe, because it would mean they themselves immensely suck at their jobs. Those who actually do suck whine louder than anyone, and I’ve seen them do a couple really really inefficient things… for their future employers.

Do you know where your armada is?

          • That’s a long winded backpeddle from someone who doesn’t know shit about what they are talking about. Using jargon from an industry you aren’t familiar with always dimes out the posers.

Jack: “They do not give their subs improper data then hide behind legalese that would cost as much as the project to date to litigate.” Where do I start with this one. Government administrators do this all the time on govt contracts. Take it from someone who’s there. Most of the time it’s not on purpose, it’s just that hand A isn’t talking to hand B. But it does happen on purpose occasionally. Faulty data would be the proper term: incomplete or incorrect plans, incorrect geotechnical analysis etc. You’re statement would insinuate that ODOT NEVER gives out improper data. Common sense tells you this is false of ANY organization.

You never answered my question Jack, which is admittance in itself. What Bachelors of Arts degree did you get?

          • There’s no backpedal here. And data is faulty a lot.

I said improper, and I meant improper. There was a bottom line that was baked into that data, and the company intentionally defaulted then claimed they did no such thing. I won’t go so far as to say they were extorting ODOT. But it was close.

Again, you are implying this kind of boondoggle happens all the time. Are you willing to back that stance?

          • I’m not sure why you’re making more of this than needs be made. If you want the state to cover your contingency on an underbid airport build, you build the tarmac last.

Granite double-dips a lot. And they do so with the same patterns. I’ve dealt with them five times in three different states, and two of those times were shady or wrong (magically unintentional, of course) on their part. I’ve transitioned since that time, so it would be disingenuous to say I would never work with them again. But that is true, nonetheless.

And why pick on ODOT? They are one of the few DOTs who actually work quite well given their resources. I think only Florida, Georgia and Alabama spend less then does Oregon per registered vehicle. I’ve not dealt with the other two, but I can tell you ODOT puts FDOT to shame.

          • Not sure if you’re going to see this, but I know where you’re coming from.

The numbers are and were always obvious. The work on the Crystal Creek structure was known to be bad… hypothetically… by two people.

That’s just the way it goes.

  27. I know this is beating a dead horse but wanted to share my thoughts on Jake Thompson, as it has been a popular topic and everyone piling on Angry.

The argument surrounding Jake has never been about “Stuff”. His “stuff” is some of the best on the team, hence why Baseball America has him rated as our best pitching prospect. That is what makes him so frustrating, Great Potential, but Mental Midget. Thompson has grown, and Casey has done a great job managing Jake this year and keeping him out of pressure situations. Being the 3rd starter has meant only once this year has he had the pressure of a must win for the Beavs to win the weekend series. Jake delivered and Angry upgraded him opinion of him.

People are acting like we have two #1 starters with Luke and Jake, completely false. There is no way Pat would have kept Jake in the game on Thursday with 2 runners on and game tied at 1 in the six inning. I haven’t watched every game, besides Saturday the only pressure situation I can recall Jake being in was vs Arizona and he got the early hook. If we are making comparisons to the 2006 team Jake is Dallas Buck and Luke is Jonah Nickerson. Everyone loved Dallas, great stuff, highly rated draft prospect, but Jonah is the reason we won the title.

I’m with Angry, until Jake consistently delivers under pressure he is a solid #3, but not someone I would count on to carry us to Omaha. If this team is as good as we all hope, right now he wouldn’t even pitch in a Super Regional.

    • He’s more than a solid 3. A solid 3 would give you about 5 -7 innings with a 3-4 ERA and a 50% chance at winning each game.

      – Beav’s haven’t lost any of Thompson starts.
      – He’s only left one game without the lead and that game was only 1-0 at that point.
      – Tied for the national lead in wins.
      – Gave up 0 runs in three conference starts.
      – 4th in nation for hits per 9.
      – Sub 1 WHIP
      – Given up 8 runs all year.

He’s pitching better than most #1s in the nation right now. Probably won’t keep up this pace but it’s hard to see him imploding like the last couple years.

BTW – Thompson will be needed to get to Omaha. Can’t get out of the sub regionals without at least 3 starters.

    • Angry said the beavs had a 1% chance of beating Arizona, or something similar to that. He was throwing heat and hitting spots late in the game against Washington with a one run lead and runners on. He was money. Nobody on here that ive seen is saying he’s great or a 1st round pick. But the year he’s having is nothing short of damn impressive. For what it’s worth, Buck was a 3rd Rd pick with known arm trouble.

Angry should stop being a toddler and admit when he’s wrong.

  28. Andersen enjoying the benefits of early spring practices. “Peer reivew,” coaches visiting LSU (Dave Aranda) and Utah State (Matt Wells – the inbreeding continues?) and players going through a 9 week conditioning program, twice as long as previous years. We’ll again see ta difference and continued program progress in conditioning this season I reckon:

  29. Before I call it a night I just wanna say a sincere thank you to all the Angrybeavs who thumbed Angry down roughly 32 times today.

      • I sometimes down vote all 200 posts just because I’m bored. But I’ve also up voted everyone because I’m bored. I sometimes up vote Jack even when I’m not smart enough to understand his topic and I up vote Whiskey because I like his use of profanity. I guess what I’m saying to Angry@angry is I wouldn’t hang my scientific hat on our voting system!

    • It figures… you’re a part of the “like me” coalition.

I still don’t know why we should care about this. I mean, according to you angry said we had a 20%, 15%, 5%, 1% and maybe even 3% and 0% chance of winning when JT pitched against Zony.

      So?

      • “like me coalition”………….no reflection on anyone here, but that’s a great line and succinct descriptor which I intend to remember and use. Well said, of course that’s just MHO, …like it or not!

      • I come to a blog and repeatedly let the guy who runs it know how dumb I think many of his opinions are.. so I’m not sure your “like me coalition” tag makes much sense.

I don’t need the up or down votes to know that pretty much nobody agrees with Angry regarding Thompson. He knows it too, but he can’t admit when he’s wrong.

        • Two

That’s how many of “his” opinions you harp on… endlessly. I put the possessive in quotes because you just made up the first one, and you ran it into the ground… and started digging a great big hole… as you’re doing here.

I’m starting to think angry is just trolling you now. Well, I’ve thought that for a while. There could even be a case made that you are he, seeing as he calls you out by name, and you act the perfect foil with all the irrational garbage and such. That argument would hold water given that his irrationality on the current who-gives-a-shit topic you have stuck in your teeth

Btw, you have a little something stuck in your teeth, and I’m tired of looking at it.

You don’t need consensus. You just need to spend your time tallying it… so you can point out that you don’t need it.

  30. I agree angry does seem rather unwilling to back off his original opinions but who cares? Do you really want a moderator that is ambiguous about everything or questions the status quo (isn’t the latter the intent of the site)? Is this really a pissing contest to see who is right more often? IMO, JT has done enough this year to deserve some cred but I also understand angry’s stance that he isn’t mentally tough enough which could cost us down the road in a close game. I don’t feel that there are any recent metrics that would allow us to evaluate that opinion but if based solely off of his 2016 performance then it is valid. Only time will tell. JT could get through the regular season without a significant black mark but if he is responsible for an early exit in the post season then he will likely become a scapegoat (for right or wrong). For 2017 he is performing admirably and has an opportunity to become the pitcher he was projected to be, he could also revert to his collegiate norm.

    • Exactly. They go after him like a witch hunt just because he owns the site. If someone else on here made those (opinionated) claims then it would’ve been brushed off after a comment or two. Get over it, he is allowed to believe what he wants and/or dislike a player with/without valid concerns.

      • It’s not because angry has his opinions, it’s because he acts like some oracle of sports that is never wrong, when he’s just as dumb as the rest of us in reality. It’s the lack of willingness to admit he’s wrong about some of his predictions that annoys me most.

        • I just changed my opinion on JT yesterday and said he went from complete garbage to serviceable. How is that not admitting I’m wrong? Data is fluid and changing. Players grow and players regress. Players have all different mental makeups. It makes the analysis fluid.

I’m very rarely wrong, but I’d never say never.

You know what’s annoying about you guys on the other side? Whenever I’m clearly right about a contentious issue it’s total crickets. Like when StS failed, McM succeeded, Riley got canned (basically), etc. Not a peep. Many many more examples more minor, like Gabe Clark, Pankey, et all stinking up the joints. So, it works both ways, I just accept it as the way ya’ll are.

          • McM succeeded. Hahahahaha

He might be #1 QB this fall, and just as easily could be #3. I’d hardly say that’s a “success”

          • Now don’t go lumping me in with everyone else, I admitted you were right about Riley and Seth the Snowcone at least. I think many people here want you to say Thompson is not only serviceable, but that he’s flat out good/great. We’ll see how he looks at the end of this season.

          • When I think he’s good/great I’ll say so. For me, to be good/great requires having absolute confidence in the player. Two years of meltdowns is hard to forget, so I don’t have confidence in him. If you guys change that quickly and have confidence that’s cool, you can do that and think he’s great. If/when I come to that conclusion you’ll be the first to know, Ran.

          • It’s funny, even Mike Parker during the game 3 broadcast (either UW or Stanford, i cant remember now) was talking about Thompson having lapses the last couple if years in pressure situations. He said so far this year, he’s been able to avoid those same lapses for the most part, with the exception being Arizona. Point being, even Parker is taking a cautiously optimistic approach to JT’s success so far this season.
So can we put all of this bullshit to rest and just say he hasn’t achieved greatness to this point in his career, despite showing signs of improvement? If/when he achieves greatness, we will know it because the team will be dog piling in Omaha as proof.

          • Angry admits he’s never heard of Kwan…. he describes McM as a success and JT as serviceable. Maybe he’s got the two of them confused.

          • Pat Baley was interviewed on the local Joe Beaver show and acknowledged the same viewpoint of JT: it is taking some getting used to for everyone that he is as good as he has been.
The stuff is there but the shift has been a mental toughness and perhaps a confidence in his own abilities that hadn’t been there before.
I remember having an alternating experience in little league of being the younger group and unsure of my abilities, next year I’m in the older group and have great confidence, next year younger group and unsure, next year older group and confident… maybe he needed to become part of that older group to settle in and trust his abilities.

      • That’s a good point. If someone else who didn’t own the site wrote those things, nobody would care. I’m a good mod who lets them all say what they want, too, and yet they love to witch hunt me. I guess because I come off as arrogant and never wrong, even though I constantly am willing to change opinions? That seems to be the reason I’m reading. Oh well. To quote the serviceable Seth Collins, “I’m going to continue to do what I do, I’m just takin’ care of #1, I’m just worried about me.”, or something along those lines.

  31. Sat down at this bar in a restaurant here in Bellevue and turns out Dennis Erickson was right next to me. Said hi and Go Beavs. We talked for a minute or two. He said he was very high on Luton coming in and that Gary Andersen was the right coach to turn things around.

  32. The press really is lazy:

Email to the local radio station in Grants Pass:

The OSU baseball team is number one in the country and just had a 23 game winning streak. It’s a remarkable story and even more remarkable that your station is not covering it.

    Response:

    Good morning C….!

Thanks for the heads-up on Oregon State Baseball. Other than local sports, we rely on the Associated Press to supply us with regional sports such as the Beavers and the Ducks. Unfortunately, it seems the AP does not believe any important sports news occurs south of Portland. There has been no news associated with the Oregon State Baseball program, despite the fact the Beavers are the #1 team in the country. If you wish to file a complaint, we suggest you contact the Associated Press. Thanks!

    …, News Director
    … Radio
    Grants Pass, OR

The same radio station used to report on the Ducks and Beavers baseball scores. Now we get a rundown of the pro sports such as hockey that I could care less about. I was thinking this is just Duck bias on their part, but now I realize it’s just pure laziness. Oh well, I already know most of the news by the time I hear it on the radio. Another complaint I have is that they rebroadcast the same simple stories all day without any updates. Rant, rant rant… Why do I still listen you say? I like the station, just wanted to suggest improvements.

  33. Here is the latest from GA on the QB situation; he is open to a two QB approach and not at all concerned that a starter has not been named yet:

Luton, a 6-foot-7 product from Ventura Community College, has the strongest arm, but was still grasping the playbook and “not 100 percent” healthy (undisclosed injury) during the spring. Neither was Garretson, who was working his way back from a broken leg that sidelined him midway through the 2016 season. Andersen said McMaryion, who started the final six games of last season, “didn’t bat an eye” during his latest quarterback derby. The hope is that Conor Blount, who had moved into the backup role in late September before a midseason knee injury, can redshirt in 2017.

Sure sounds like McM would start if there was a game this week, but there isn’t.

However: “This team is not sitting there saying, ‘Oh my Gosh, we’ve got to know who our quarterback is so we can rally around him,'” Andersen said. “They’ll rally around all three of them. I truly, truly believe that.”

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2017/04/gary_andersen_content_with_ore.html#incart_river_index

    • “And when he turns his eyes around, the wide receiver better know, ‘Holy cow, that ball is halfway here,'” Andersen said. “That’s what we haven’t been able to do. We’re waiting until people get open, and then we throw the ball. In this league, people react and it causes you problems.”

I remember Wheaton saying the biggest difference between college and pro ball was in pro ball, when he turned his eyes, the ball was right there and he had to catch it. In college, he often saw the balll leave the QBs hand.

      • Oregon State coaches hoped to identify a starting quarterback “early” in 2017. That did not happen

        Same story every year.
It would be nice if these guys could just spot the best guy and name him the QB. Three years of this nonsense.

        • MM has earned the right to be the starter. If he sucks, replace him. It would be better to get him more reps and have him lead the offseason stuff.

        • It seems to me that they are hoping someone will pull away from the pack and take ownership of the position, proving themselves to be “the guy.” Unfortunately the group they have all appear to have some upside, and some flaws.

          • Of all the news outlets you choose to ignore, you don’t ignore the one most of us do ignore.

Dipshit Donald, the dumbfuck dolt… who knew he was less complicated than even he portrayed himself? He’s an international joke, and the suckers who voted for him are proving to be even less intelligent than him.

You have to dig a hole to shimmy under that bar.

Go to any news outlet for Armada Man’s latest escapade. Dipshit is on it. You probably choose to inhabit some site that constantly buries Dolt’s leads. But you’ll likely find it beneath the fold somewhere near Dumbfuck’s learner’s permit.

Who knew international relations were so hard?

          • International relations are easy.

Dipshit Donald said so. I’m pretty sure he threw a couple bada bings in there for good measure.

Here’s something of a neat deal to consider. North Korea can’t really shoot their bombs. But they keep making a show of it in order to propagandize the issue. I’d be willing to bet they will never attach a nuke to an ICBM.

But what they do have available is someone to think about using nukes for defense for half a second. If we go and bomb them, how do we know they don’t have nukes buried all along the DMZ?

How do we know they won’t vaporize 30K Americans (and many more South Koreans) if their strange leader guy wants to retaliate against our dipshit blowhard of a leader?

          • How do we know?

Because they haven’t miniaturized their nukes into warhead size, additionally their nukes are on par with Britain’s 1960s nukes.

          • So?

Who says that little fucker won’t blow his own country up just to prove a point? It will already be bombed by the mother of all twits. Why not just finish the job and take out a cool couple million enemies in the process?

          • How do we know…………..?

MASINT is how we know, especially the part that the public has no knowledge of…….
Physical nuclear production inspections for the last 15 years has been mostly just show……we already know what everyone is producing.

          • Hey!

If National Socialism is socialism because… derp… it says so in the name, what are we to make of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea?

  34. Steve Gress at the GT tweets that Breanna Brown will move on to GA Tech for grad school.
Would have liked to see her stay but never sensed that it was likely.
    Go BWB’s!

    • There are a ton of women transfers in the B1G this year and nationwide, so hopefully SR can snag one to replace her. The one thing I don’t get is a lot of these players pass up a chance to be a team captain and undisputed team leader. She is a pretty big loss. Angry better put his GF through some heavy duty drills to help replace BB’s production.

      • Brown was different in that she has no plans to play pro ball. Her post playing career took precedent which is a good thing for her.

      • Hard to tell how happy/unhappy she was with the redshirt year. Perhaps she thought she should have been able to compete with Gulich and Hamblin. In which case, she doesn’t owe OSU or Rueck anything and good for her, trying out a new world.

Brown seemed steady whereas Marie sometimes disappears.

        • All she owed was full effort, cooperation, and honesty. Seems like she checked all those boxes, very straightforward about her intentions regarding grad school.
Probably never happen, but I’d be interested in her thoughts about Rueck and OSU after a year at Ga Tech.

And, both Gulich and Brown disappeared at times. With Brown it was more often due to fouls.

  35. Curious fact; didya know that the three top ERA arms for the team all have EXACTLY FIVE times as many K’s as BB’s? Mulholland, Engelbrekt, and Heimlich.

FYI, Jake Thompson (fourth in ERA) tallies K/BB=3. Well actually, 3.05.
