Bears at Beavs – Series Thread

112

Just about an hour till first pitch, 7:05 start. Weather in “The Best College Town in the PAC” should not be a factor this weekend, and all games are on PAC.
As Bill previewed this morning (before Danny copied), there is an:

“Insanely low chance – But there is a shot at clinching the PAC12 outright this weekend. Beavs need to sweep. Stanford needs to get swept, UCLA needs to lose 2 and UW needs to lose two.” and Cal is a “Decent hitting team but pitching struggles have hurt their season. Second highest walks allowed and lowest srikeouts in the pac 12.

Will Luke continue to be dependable?
Will the bats take advantage of an opportunity?
How about Fehmel?

Will Meggs (again this year) be cheering for the Bears? –Damned Straight!

GO BEAVS!

  1. C-boy starts in LF tonight, Larnach DH.

A test for Adley? “Cal is also the conference’s most aggressive team on the basepaths, ranking first in stolen bases (47) and attempts (67).”

  2. Beavs up 2-0, despite Mighty Kwan being robbed of an RBI by mediocre baserunning by Nick.
    Luke dealin’ tonight.
    On to the b2.

  3. Luke figures in another DP with a WP strike out and runner tagged out at the plate by Luke on the throw by Adley.
Adley appeared not to be so happy with himself there, but while letting the pitch get away it was still a nice play on his part…….and on Luke’s as well.

Luke dumped the ball out of his glove quickly after the tag, ump musta made the call w/o any delay,

  4. Too late Nate. Allows Luke to start the 8th having thrown 92 pitches and due to go next Thursday.

I suppose another 15 or so pitches won’t make that much difference by Thursday but I’d rather Nate pulled him around 80 and brought in Hickey or anyone other than Max E. or Jake Mulholland.

Balancing act between a mental pat on the back vs a little extra rest. At this point in the season I’d vote rest…..JMHO.

  5. Something to consider (stolen from the twitter of Bob Lundeberg of the GT):
“UO/WSU has been rained out today. Will David Peterson pitch Game 1 of next week’s Civil War on just 4 days rest?”

  6. The Ducks have a really good chance of winning that series if Peterson is his usual self and our Saturday starter doesn’t do well.

    • Nice. Helps with the fact Oregon landed a stud DT yesterday.

Halid Djibril has a great offer sheet, too, and can play LB it looks like.

      • Was thinking about the oregon recruiting subject. To me the real comparison is how does Taggart compare to Helfrich in recruiting. It is too early to see the complete picture, but as of now Taggart is recruiting better. Though the margin is so small it is barely measurable. This is based on 247 individual recruit evaluation. The amount of recruits do not matter in May only the quality matters. Based on this Taggart is slightly better at recruiting than Helfrich. So really the situation is not that big of a deal right now or earth shattering news.

        • Also, I really like the Djibril pick up. The recruiting of the last class has really carried over to 2018. Every commit in 2018 has big connections to recruits in 2017.

  7. Does the early signing period take effect this year? If so, it will be interesting to see how many of these recruits sign early. If they’ve committed this early, they will have plenty of time to be courted by other teams. So if they sign in Dec., then GA has done a good job of selling the program.

      • It goes both ways. You have an offer till somebody else comes along.
Im just glad SOMEBODY is showing interest

    • “100% committed” to ‘well it’s a big decision, if other schools want to keep recruiting me I’ll definitely entertain the option’ in 2+ hours?

Yeah, Beavs can count on this dude to still be interested come the end of the year.

  8. I just got home from softball because I took my 4 year old draught and they own 3-1 and take the series from the 10th ranked UTES. turn on the TV and then Pow the shoot from Kawn

  9. A good win. Shows they can win a slugfest. Cal’s homeruns were all no doubters.

The offense has picked up very nicely in the last 3 pac12 games. 10, 8 and 11 runs.

    Some notes –
    – Fehmel some of his old self early on and his new self in the 4th. I think he stays in the rotation the rest of the year. Postseason, he may get skipped.
    – Rasmussen struggled a bit. Threw a lot of strikes but Cal did a good job hitting. I think they kept him in to stretch him out.
    – It’s possible Mulholland won’t get any work this week if Thompson has a good outing tomorrow.

Beavs magic number down to 4.

  10. OT: Ethan Thompson goes off at the Ballislife Allstar game. Played with Gopher signee Isaiah Washington, who won the three point shooting contest.

“Thompson, who had his fair share of his own highlight reels moments on the night, was somewhat overshadowed by the flamboyant showcases from two of his Team Elite teammates in Minnesota signee Isaiah Washington and Alabama commit Collin Sexton. Washington, who finished with 25 points, dazzled the crowd with some exhuberant dribbling displays and a handful of his famous “jelly” lay-ups, while Sexton controlled most of the fourth quarter in a back-and-forth isolation game with future UCLA guard Jaylen Hands.”

    • Not sure if he was “homered” or not – for MVP, that is. The stat line shows Thompson a lot better than either of the other two guys.

Maybe the refs are getting him ready for Pac-12 away games….

  11. Sweet geezus, at the game you could tell Jake had lost it in the sixth, too late Nate ways til the 7th to bring the hook; maybe with the but lead he was trying to save the pen? Ugh.

  12. Jake Thompson leaves after 6.1 against the Bears potent offense. Gave up 9 hits, 2 runs, had 6 k’s and 1bb. Probably his “worst” stat line for the year, actually not to shabby. He leaves with a runner on 3b and is bailed out by Verburg.

Beavs up 7-2 going to the b7.

  13. Beavs (with 3 conference losses) have 6 conference games left. Stanford and UCLA each with 8 conference losses have 9 games left. So the Beavs will need 1 win OR 1 Stanford&UCLA loss to get gain the conference auto-bid.

  14. Is Meggs still on that selection committee? It will be interesting to see if they end up with a similar record and place in conference as we had last year.

  15. Saw him walking around Goss at Saturday’s game with a few people. ztinkle chatted with him for a few minutes and then some semi drunk Beaver fan starts railing on him to get rid of the Illinois St gear he was wearing and “come play for Coach.”
Real classy way to make an impression, he probably doesn’t come because some weirdo puts him on the spot and makes it an awkward situation with Tinkle standing right there.

  16. Cal wrap up
    – Thompson was obviously struggling so why he was kept in the 7th was baffling esp when his pitch count was nearing 100.
    – the offense is going to carry the beavs out of the regionals. Guys need to keep hitting.
    – the last series vs Abilene might be a bad thing. Pretty low program. How much intensity the team.can keep up vs them will be a question. Losses there will be quite deflating.

      • Wasn’t worth it given the situation. Comfortable lead, rested bullpen.

More than a few guys didn’t get any work in during the week. Mulholland, Hickey, Tweedt.

        • Hard to say whether it’s worth it or not. He worked threw a bad day and got good results, that may pay off later. Not getting some other guys some innings may hurt. I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer. But In the playoffs I think Thompsons ability to battle through is going to be very important.

        • Mulholland needed a weekend off. He’s pitched a lot of innings for a freshman and it was starting to catch up with him. And I was fine with Jake pitching until he did. He battled his butt off without his best stuff and turned in a day that for most pitchers would be a great line against a team with as potent of an offense that Cal has.

  17. Oregon is going to have a challenging week.

Why they scheduled a mid week game vs Portland is questionable with the civil war starting on a Thursday. Luckily for them, the games at WSU didn’t tax their bullpen. We’ll see how Horton manages that game. They need all the wins they can get right now.

I hope Peterson starts Thursday vs Heimlich so we can all see two potential first round picks go head to head in a rivalry game.

  18. OT – speculation and anxiety about the future of NCAA football broadcasting:

“…after years of runaway revenue growth, those commissioners must confront the possibility that the gravy train could slow considerably in the coming years. ”

“…..Every school in the Big 12 makes more off its third-tier deal than each school in the Pac-12 makes off the league owned-and-operated Pac-12 Network. The underwhelming performance of the Pac-12 Network continues to be a sore spot, but Scott said it isn’t reason to panic. “There’s anxiety in our conference, but I think it’s more about the future,” Scott said. “We’re reading about the success of the SEC Network and the Big Ten’s new TV deal. There’s fear of might we fall behind in the future. But sitting here today, we’re in great shape.”

That anxiety about the future isn’t limited to the Pac-12. Every league is feeling it as the cable networks hemorrhage subscribers. An industry that has become accustomed to economic growth now has to grapple with the very real possibility of flat revenue or less revenue in the near future.”

    • Correct.
Do you trust him starting Game 1 of a playoff or an elimination game? If the answer is yes you’re nuts, and if the answer is no then we’re on the same page.

  19. I get the impression that we’re working on another TCU transfer to the football team. Hopefully something develops

      • CB

It’s pure speculation on my part, but when a guy starts following almost all of our coaching staff, plus our Rivals and Scout pages(Sedge and Blitz), I take it as a sign that something is in the works. But I have nothing else to go on other than my gut.

4* class of 2015, DeShawn Raymond out of Lousiana is who I’m watching.
Played as a true freshman, then sat out last year with an ACL injury.

Again, I have nothing concrete at all. Just reading the tea leaves.

Question for anybody else, if a guy sits out a year and then transfers, does he still need to sit out a full year after transfer? Or did the 1 year redshirt count as sitting out a year?
My guess would be that he would need to sit if he transfers somewhere, but I just don’t know.

        • Good info! Why else would he start following our staff? My assumption is that he would have to had been already enrolled while he was sitting out.

  20. Regarding the potential MBB grad transfer. He is a very good player and would be nice fit as far as a skill set for the team. At the time of the NCAA’s he was considered a lock to come to Minnesota, so much so that Gopher sites were being trolled by Ill. State folks. After three weeks or so that died down. His former teammate at Ill State was the B1G D player of the year this past season.
Nice get if it happens, but still need a ball handler.

  21. Andrew Moore promoted to AAA. Joins Sam Gavilgio and Tyler Smith.

Likely still a year away from breaking into the show.

  22. OT — I’m as guilty as anyone of calling out players who don’t perform as well as we expect them to. It’s important to remember that they have their own lives and issues away from the field that might effect their performance on it.

Sean Martin was a DB for the Beavs who was apparently dealing with some crazy, heartbreaking family problems. I don’t remember much about him other than being underwhelmed by his play.

This is a pretty long read but worth the time:

    • Mental health issues strike again. Weather it’s kids like this or veterans with a mental problem you’re pretty much on your own…..until you kill someone or yourself. Sad.

  23. Rain in the forecast for series with Oregon.

Weather.com is saying the rain will likely be during the day. Certainly make for cold and wet conditions. Not good baseball weather. Advantage goes to OSU. I’m sure they will play through is since it can’t be made up and Oregon needs the wins.
