Civil War Baseball – series thread

You can bet all those of the toilet seat persuasion and particularly Coach Horton are hoping the weather cooperates. Their only shot at post season is a decent performance.

Horton: The Rich Man’s Mike Riley?
As someone said, it would be nice if uncle phil keeps him around. He’s beatable (despite recent years) and certainly not a threat in the PAC overall. Similar to MR, he comes across as likeable, and inept.
Horton says, “the Beavs are on a mission” in a piece in the GT (link below). Didya know he too, was snubbed? Happened back in ’91 and that team, CalFull, has gone to the post season 25 consecutive times since the snub.

Keys to the series are pretty straightforward; Beavs pitchers need to avoid HBP, WP, and minimize BB. Hitters need to be aggressive vs the good starting arms of the little sisters.

FEHMEL: Important story here; who takes his place and, as significant, what is his role going forward?

Two wins clinches the PAC Crown AND gets #1000 for Casey, warts and all, lol.

  1. First.
Never heard the MR comparison but it fits well. Hearing Horton talk, he sounds like a guy that is happy with middling seasons. He understands no one REALLY expects the ducks to ever win the CWS

  2. Adley batting cleanup again, he can take a big step with success vs ucks.
EDIT: Last minute change, twitter lies, Adley batting 5th, still a big opportunity to face some fine arms.

  3. You cannot give HBP to these guys, especially with three on. Luke spending a lot of time tonight with runners on, he is not gonna finish this.
3-1 good guys, for now. Sacks full of ucks, 1 down, 1 in, b5.

  4. Game one notes – good win.

    – Heimlich battled his command but ducks couldn’t take advantage.
    – Ducks have issues with fundamentals. It’s costing them games.
    – hitting still hot. Nice to see some homers.
    – Eisert is sneaky fast. His short arm motion is pretty deceiving.

I think Mulholland gets the start tomorrow. For whatever reason, the ducks don’t hit lefties well. Casey hasn’t put in a righty against them in both games.

    • I heard/read somewhere – that Eisert didn’t get a lot of recruiting attention because his pre-OSU team wasn’t very good. I realize that Casey and OSU have top recruiting classes but they do a fine job imo of finding overlooked talent. Riley got credit for that but, except in rare instances, I didn’t see it. Too, whatever it was I heard/read about Eisert mentioned that he hides the ball exceptionally well.

  5. Just watched that kid Dukart’s film. ??? He looks pretty average. Stats don’t jump off the page either.

Better prospect as a baseball player.

    • Pretty much in agreement here.

But if he’s a guy who never really concentrated n football, maybe he can work some of that out. They say he looked good in spring 7 on 7? Still, I’m not overwhelmed.

      • Andersen allegedly said he’s “their guy.”

Angry has always called into question Anderesen’s ability to evaluate and develop QBs.

  6. Fucking really? No one has mentioned it?????

Beavs clinched a share of the Pac-12 title tonight AND the automatic NCAA tournament berth by virtue of series wins over UCLA and Stanford.

Fuck Meggs, fuck the committee. They left nothing to chance.

    Warts, LOB and all.

  7. Sam Gaviglio pitched for the Mariners last night. Not a great outing but hopefully he settles in. Andrew Moore is also in their organization… would be nice to see two Beavs on the same MLB pitching staff.

    • Struck out Darwin Barney. Gaviglio is only up because of injuries so unless he’s just up for a cup. Will be back down in AAA soon.

  8. Mike Parker was especially unimpressed with the crowd size. I agree after seeing highlights and crowd shots as Beavers are rounding the bases.

We know Peterson is pitching tonight. Hitters have to be disciplined against this guy.

      • I like the move to a lefty after Drew goes 58 pitches and a few throws to first. Always seems good to change sides of the mound mid game.
How ’bout that orange bat tonight? Mighty Kwan!

  9. Surprised to see Beav hitters staying in the box so much. Lots of missed opportunities to break the pitchers rhythm, and the uck arms have controlled the tempo as a result.

  10. Schmuck baseball has to be the worst brand of baseball to watch in the country. No wonder their fans don’t go to games — wait around all day for a guy to hang his elbow over the plate so he can get on base. Fawwwk!!!

  11. Oregon’s snack shack actually has an item called the “Big Horton Burrito” on their menu.
    That just seems cruel.

    • I’d rather have a leader with some obvious warts than a stupid wart who’s corrupt, reactionary and has no idea how to lead.

        • Oh… I’m also comfortable with Dumbfuck Donald, the doodoo dunderhead. He’s so stupid and emotionally fucked up that he will be ineffectual at best.

I just made up that word. It’s my word… that I just made up. I’ve never heard anyone use it before. I just came up with it on my own.

          Believe me.

        • Touched a nerve… a really really really obvious nerve… one exposed by avarice and stupidity… combined or not.

I don’t know how any one of you thinks Dufus Donald, the daffy dumbshit, is anything remotely resembling a man… let alone intelligent. His children are average to below average, and they run circles around his mental capacity.

I think nobody here is as dumbshit dumb as 4D5. It’s really hard to think anyone is that dumb. But he keeps opening his mouth.

If you buy it now, you’re either corrupt or beyond the sucker label I thought before. You have to be beyond stupid to believe this asshat is goig to do anything. And I’m not talking like Obama signing a couple orders to direct his departments to lessen dumb oversight, as most of his orders were.

But now I will have to accept anecdotal evidence to the contrary… oh… if the racist fucks who pretended to know econ had anything to say about the death of supply-side econ… decided to speak… and shit.

        • I’m not?

I’m still trying to square this Riley comparison with a coach whose team chatters like harpies from the dugout… and who participated in six CWS with one championship in this country.

          I’m not seeing it/

          • Or… if you wanna go full racist… say “the half black.”

It doesn’t change his economic, domestic or foreign policies one whit. But it lets us know you’re an immensely stupid person from the get go.

          • John Birch can lick my sweaty balls.

That would be his likely profession anyway… that, or pubic hair comber.

That’s about the value given anything in his name.

          • sweaty balls

Birchers need to lick the sticky off first. But then they can rightly start licking my sweaty balls.

That’s funny… because Birchers are stupid fucks who are also stupid.

Oh yeah… dig a hole, and buy gold!

            !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

            There. Be scared.

I started off the day talking to JW’s as I went to get the paper. I finish it off talking to their mental equivalent.

          • That’s ^^^ chill.

you think I’m going to waste energy reforming all your mantras? Your kind of dumb has two gears, gravity and entropy. All I can do is mock it… endlessly.

You can always run off to your safe space if the mirror scares you.

  12. Over 80 pitches through 4…only got one run but this thing is about to get blown open. Batters dong a great job extending AB’s.

  13. Aaron Fitt’s glowing article, linked above, was nice but didn’t go as far as his recent tweet:
“I think I’ve seen everybody in the top 10 in person now, and @BeaverBaseball is the most complete.”

“the most complete”, that’s what makes this group so special, right? Contributors up and down the lineup and throughout the pen. Even a pinch running specialist who makes highlight plays. Not even Meggs can keep these guys down!

  14. Just think about it… one comment that was beyond common but still applied to some really stupid person caused a response like this.

You all could have ignored what I said, except you knew who I was talking about… because I don’t even have to try. I can say corrupt, and you already have El Stupido in your head.

This is natural. Stupid and corrupt should elicit those feelings.

    • Just think about it………….

The discussion was about baseball. YOU turned it into politics. Anyone with an ounce of sanity would say you’re the triggered one. But whatever floats your boat.

      • I did no such thing. You did it.

Have a wonderful mother’s day. Imagine any one of the women in your life, past or present, having to be in the same room as President Pussy Grabber. This is your world now.

          • If I’m to understand your meaning here, you’re saying Doofus Donald, the dumbshit dingbat, is not as good as a funny song that can be found getting air on Dr. Demento.

I think you overestimate our current POTUS… by a lot.

        • Oh FFS…………

“I’d rather have a leader with some obvious warts than a stupid wart who’s corrupt, reactionary and has no idea how to lead.”

You know it, I know it and so does everyone else. EXACTLY who you were talking about. Nice try though. There’s only one person who turns something that has nothing to do with politics into something political and it’s your delusional mind.

Now you’re going to go into some rant about pussy grabbing, how this is the “world you’ve created” or some other stupid, delusional ranting from from an individual who is clearly borderline psychotic.

          #Jackknowsbest

          • Incorrect.

The only reason that anyone would know any of that is because it’s true. So you’re saying that it is, in fact true, not a hypothetical.

Sorry, but if I were talking politics, I would say a lot worse about the pretend man you think it is.

Now… tell me all about inoculations, please.

          • When you’re done avoiding the inoculation issue, and if you can get over being triggered, you can tell the Birchers that my sweaty balls need to be serviced.

          • Oh… and I can’t just grab any woman’s pussy, as our POTUS does. I’m not a narcissistic and highly litigious turd who assaults women, like our POTUS.

If you ever thought Bill Clinton was a bad person because of his womanizing, then you must think 4D5 is a monster. But I think Clinton is a bad person because he never took responsibility for his womanizing, blaming the women themselves for telling untruths and/or whatever. The current coward in office does all these same things with many more women, even going so far as threatening to slap them with another of his thousands of frivolous lawsuits just to bury them financially.

But apparently you think it’s okay when a draft dodging coke fiend does it.

  15. For the record:

I’d rather have a leader with some obvious warts than a stupid wart who’s corrupt, reactionary and has no idea how to lead.

That was said. You took it to mean Dumbshit Donald, the dingbat dookie. And that’s fair. He is all of these things and worse. A moron could see who he is in half a glance… if they were too lazy to do any research on his history… or forgot who he’s been in public for the last 50 years.

Corrupt, reactionary and lacking leadership are possibly the nicest things I could say about Dipshit Donald, the dilapidated dildo. And it’s not like I would try to be mean. I would just start listing adjectives that correctly describe his stupidity and corruption.

Oh… if you think the “leebrul media” is out to get him, you go find me one news outlet that discusses how he has been laundering money for the Russian mafia for years.

    I’ll wait.

    • Isn’t this fun? The last POTUS only refused to release his birth certificate… well… his real one… well… the long form one… well… what were we talking about?

      • So you still have questions about the last POTUS birth certificate?

Seems strange you’d bring this up.. anyone else here have questions about such things. I have a question how is it that the 4th estate is controlled by what six companies Yet it still could not get the 3rd Clinton administration elected (I’m unsure about old Burney either because something about being part of a socialist party does not square with me I’m looking at you Germany)

Heck, one would think people would have talked about this birth certificate issue more during the past 8 years or something.

Rather than wart counting I rather question an FBI director that both sides hated and wanted fired because he might have been honest or could have been another Oliver North. Any rate it might be best to keep things civil on the other hand there is nothing Civil about War

great weekend for the Beavers. Are you going to watch the UCLA Vs WSU game Jack? Beavers will face WSU nest week so might be a game to watch you think?

        • So you still have questions about the last POTUS birth certificate?

Seems strange you’d bring this up..

I have never had any questions about it. I know where Honolulu is. It’s nowhere near Nairobi, which was not in Kenya in 1960, as the fake birth certificate Dumbshit Donald tried to sell all the stupids said it did. If your POTUS’ mental capacity is not concerning to you, then why bother asking the questions POTUS asks?

Why would corporate America want Clinton elected? She’s a corporatist in the sense that she takes fro us and gives to business incrementally. Dingbat Donald is so stupid that he would just take from us and give it to corporations for the helluvit.

Heck, one would think people would have talked about this birth certificate issue more during the past 8 years or something.

I can give you the name of one really really really reeeaaaaalllly really stupid person who did talk about it a lot.

Comey is not a gun runner, a drug trafficker, a liar, a traitor or a convicted felon. I don’t see any comparison to Oliver North. Note also that he is a large man. There really isn’t any mystery why a coward like Draft Dodging Donald fired the dude without even telling him… while he was on the road. And then he talks smack about the dude he just fired.

That one surprised even me. I didn’t realize Old Bone Spur was immune from the eeoc.

Why would I watch sub-standard sport when I have no emotional attachment to either team? That sunds like a waste of time. I’ll bet Pat Casey is watching. But that’s because it’s his job. I’ll watch it if you pay me… maybe.

          • you mean Our POTUS unless you are not a citizen. I did not vote for Bush yet I called him commander and chief. If you are not a citizen that is ok too just don’t get involved with the law.

Oh, I did not ask why would corporate America want Clinton elected; because in the end everyone pays for power. I want to how come the 4th estate is so bad now? That hold such little sway compared to 20 or even 10 years ago . Sure it had a strong message if you don’t vote blue you are a racist sex bigot and you have bad hair…you know the name Deplorables. That would be a good name for a Pixar film

any rate I still have hope for the POTSU or there is always impeachment. On the other hand mike pence makes me nervous more so then even Sanders.

          • What are you babbling about? You did ask why corporate America didn’t work to get Clinton elected. It’s because they saw an easier time with Old Bone Spur and his cronies. You’re right. Clinton came with all the weird language baggage and shit. But she’s still a corporatist. So the 4th estate wasn’t going to lose either way. They had no reason to try, so they didn’t.

Bernie, on the other hand, would have put a wrench in the whole neocon lie. He’s not a socialist, no matter how ignorant you want to play it. In fact, when we talk about Medicare for all, that is the most conservative ideal for health care existing.

          • Or… if you believe free air time is tantamount to trying… they all doubled down on Dufus Donald, the deplorable dumbshit. He got by far the most air time of anyone for the whole cycle. Hell, when other contenders were speaking and holding rallies, the media (pick any channel) was showing an empty Dumbshit Donald dais, sometimes for almost a whole hour.

So you might be able to say they got who they wanted and worked for.

        • Nope.

If all don’t like this fun, then all can go hide in their safe spaces.

The real fun is yet to begin. We’re just getting started.

          • “Bernie, on the other hand, would have put a wrench in the whole neocon lie. He’s not a socialist, no matter how ignorant you want to play it. In fact, when we talk about Medicare for all, that is the most conservative ideal for health care existing”

but but Berinie said he is a democratic socialist so that is not a socialist?

          • Nope… just like National Socialism is also not socialism, but is, in fact, corporatism with state support.

I’ll bet you think the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is democratic republic like the good old US of A. Right?

When you get stuck on labels, you miss the forest for the trees. Then you start to think stupid stuff like Communism is the same as communism, or Socialism is the same as socialism, or in this case you think a social democrat is a socialist. I can see where you get confused about him, though. I have zero clue why he says “democratic socialist” when he’s clearly not one.
            https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2016/03/bernie-sanders-democratic-socialism/471630/

  16. you sound like a fucking dipshit with the ongoing obsession with minimizing Mike Rileys ability as a coach. Do you think the debate’s over? Do you think you just need to keep repeating it as though it’s a fact and wait for people to tire of the conversation? The Huffington Post tactic… “Rich mans Mike Riley” – you’re a hack and go fuck yourself.

Do we trust Thompson to take the mount in the playoffs yet? You really nailed that assessment huh?

    • Feel better now?

My words above. Guess I should label my threads (fixed now), lest angry get more grief than he deserves! LOL!

      oob

    • Ummm… this is possibly the nicest thing anyone has said of Mike Riley’s coaching ability. Horton has gone to the CWS six times, winning once. Mike Riley has never placed better than third in his conference.

You should be defending Horton here.

Please tell us how Mike Riley is being minimized here. Why do you feel the numbers are not what they are?

      • I agree, I don’t really see the comparison. Horton has actually won important games at the college level. Riley continues not to do that. I guess if the implication is that Horton is wearing out his welcome in Eugene and Riley did the same in Corvallis, I get it, but their actual coaching achievements are miles apart.

  17. I’m more worried about LOB 14 last night and they only scored one now that is ugly thought others might not think so…. Anyone else watching the UCLA vs WSU game today

  18. Conforto w/a hr for the Mets. Man he has a nice swing. If he’s not careful he’s gonna end up in the hall of fame someday.

      • Finally? He just turned 24 and barely has a season’s worth of MLB experience under his belt. Your sports takes are so critical as to be rendered uncredible.

        • Most great hitters are in MLB by 20 and 80% their potential realized by 22 these days. By 24 they’re stars. Sorry you’re living in ’62, dude.

          • I would only contest that most great hitters are in the show at age 20 in the current generation.

Of the top 20 active batting averages, only 2 were up by age 20, Cabrera and Trout. Everyone else was around 22 or 23.

          • Bill, to be a star before 25 is the norm now not the exception. So “Conforto is only 24” doesn’t cut it. He has a great swing, and given the modern conditioning, technology (e.g. jugs machines since little league, great equipment, etc), etc etc the old paradigm that 24 is young simply isn’t true. Julio Urias was in the majors at 19 last year and had a 3.3 ERA. Jose Fernandez was similar. Trout. Cabrera. All stars well before 25. In the modern game 25-29 is considered prime. It’s kind of laughable that people consider 24 young in baseball terms. 18-21 is young. Beyond that you’re expected to perform at least somewhat near your talent level. A great example of this is Byron Buxton. When he came up, the argument for him stinking was “he’s only 20” — now 3 years later and he still stinks, and talks are now about cutting him loose because he’s a bust. Nobody is saying “he’s only 23” except the extreme optimists or dudes who are still stuck in ’62.

          • If a player has any chance to be considered one of the “Greats” or make the Hall of Fame, they will have to be producing before 25, sure.

Maybe it just all depends on what you consider a star player.

Is Bryce Harper a star player? Maybe. Checking out baseball references similarity scores at the same age are fun to look at. Harper’s top 10 includes 3 hall of famers but the top matches were Andruw Jones and Justin Upton.

Whereas Mike Trout’s top 10 similar player matches has 9 hall of famers.

  19. Obviously a great weekend with a sweep of the Ducks. Knocks them out any kind of shot at the tournament. Thank goodness there is no PAC12 tournament. Conference tournaments are worthless.

    – I think Fehmel gets the Tuesday start and then the Thursday start against Abline Christian. Good way to work his way back. He will be needed in the postseason.
    – Didn’t agree with Drew getting the start on Fri. He’s still working his way back and that’s bit too much pressure going up against Peterson.
    – You can see in Jake T that he his super confident in his stuff.

8 games left in the year. No makeups are expected since they would mean nothing.

Vs Portland – should see more of the backups in that game. Madrigal and Rutschman should get a break. Need to get the backups some playing time because they need to be ready for the postseason too.

vs WSU – should be a full go for everyone. Drew will get stretched out a little more. Maybe up to 75 pitch count. Finish the conference season on a high note.

vs Abilene Christian – just get out of there with no injuries. Pitchers on strict pitch counts. Starters should be out by 90 pitches. Bullpen should be no more than 30-35. Try to get everyone at least an inning or two. No time to be greedy, doesn’t matter what your reg season record is if you don’t make it to Omaha.

    • Knock on wood, but when all is said and done, the Beavs should surpass their single season win record (52 in 2013) in this historical season. No chance for the all time NCAA record which was back in the 80’s with 72 by Wichita St. As I understand, teams played a crazy amount of games back then also.

    • There’s a lot less pressure starting a game than there is coming in late in the game with bases loaded and trying to protect the lead.

      • To me it was the context. Starting against Peterson means Drew would need to be relatively perfect to keep the Beavs in the game, with the way Peterson had been pitching. If Drew went up against their #3, then there’s less pressure to be perfect and I’d be fine with that.

but maybe it couldn’t be helped since Peterson was pushed to Friday.
