If the weather forecast is correct, it's dubious they play any baseball Friday or Saturday. 100% chance of rain the next two days, and .8 inches of rain. Sunday into Monday looks a little better, so maybe they can squeeze some action in then.

Matchups:

  • (Wetzler 4-0, 3.58) vs. (West 4-1, 2.12)
  • (Child 2-1, 1.86) vs. (Davis 2-0, 1.00)
  • (Fry 1-1, 5.14) vs. (Voth 4-0, 4.18)

Here's to hoping Pat Casey has a better series.

Go Beavs.

  1. Weather is not looking promising in Corvallis today. I’ve seen no official word, but the field has got to be soaked with no letting up expected today.

I hope to see Boyd used as more than a lefty, situational specialist. He’s too good for that.

    • They wouldn’t cancel it but it hasn’t been postponed yet. I expect within the next half hour it will be postponed until tomorrow.

  2. Is that a punched through hole on the edge of the Pac-12 logo behind the plate?

Looks like someone stabbed it with a bat. Kinda distracting. Wonder how long until that gets fixed.

  3. I really wish the Beavers approach at the plate was a little different. Making a pitch work is fine but if you get a fastball down the middle some aggressiveness would be nice. They get too passive at the plate.

  4. Kavin Keyes continues to struggle. I wonder how much longer Casey will stick with him. He’s really showing no signs of breaking out of his slump and it’s almost April. Would think Casey’s patience with him is running thin.

  5. With so many guys slumping it is hard to score runs. Tyler Smith is really the only guy hitting well as of late. Outside of the RBI single Davis has been slumping for a while, Dunn is in a mini slump, Keyes has been slumping all season, Barnes in a little bit of a slump, Rodriguez is slumping. Beavers just aren’t getting a ton of guys on base.

  6. Wetzler has give up two hits and a run through 7 innings. He’s done his job. Time for the offense to produce and get him a win.

  7. Beavers finally get a lead-off man on base. And that was some nice hitting by Keyes. Didn’t try to do too much. Stayed on that fastball and hit it where it was pitched.

  8. Dylan Davis cannot get to any outside pitch. Pitchers can throw any pitch on the outside corner and he won’t do anything with it right now and he’s struggling with anything soft.

  9. Must figure that the third time is the charm and if the Beavs hold here they will finally get one across in the bottom.

  10. dawgs add a run on a play where Davis appeared to make a diving catch but the ball came out of his glove. They get the batter hung up between 1st and 2nd to get out of the inning. On to the B10 and Beavs need 2 to tie.

  11. Runners on first and second and 1 out for Tyler Smith, Conforto on deck. Just the guys the Beavers want up in this situation.

  12. Beavers had no business losing this game. This team is not playing winning baseball at all. If the Beavers don’t win game 2 they could go into a huge slide.

    • I was going to say that they didn’t have any business winning this game, other than Wetzler’s performance this game stunk.

      • This was a game that for the first 7 innings or so the Beavers outplayed the Huskies. They had chances to grab the lead but didn’t and let UW hang around and paid for it. I’m really concerned about this team.

    • The Beavers pitching staff allowed 1 run through 9 innings. That should be enough to get the win. Offense stunk. Also, two runs scored on what looked like plays the defense could have made. Rodriguez had a tough play but it looked like a play that could have been made. Hard to tell on Davis’ slide, not a great camera angle but he might have been able to make the play. Offense just isn’t getting it done right now and that’s the reason they lost. In the 5-8 innings the last 4 games the offense has scored a total of 2 runs. That will never get it done. The guys need to pick it up.

      • Agree with all that but if Bryant comes in and shuts them down you pick up a junk run in the 10th and win the game. Just don’t trust the bullpen this year except for Boyd.

  13. Did you hear Jim Wilson say in game one that the best predictor of scoring a run in an inning is an extra base hit. Fully 50% of innings with an extra base hit there’s a run scored.

  14. I have no idea why anyone pitches Dylan Davis inside. That’s where he wants guys to pitch him. I’m fine with it though! Keep pitching him there.

  15. Clutch RBI single by Hayes. 5-0 now. Beavers doing all the things in this game that they haven’t been doing over the last 3 games

  16. UO sweeps ASU wins series, WSU over Usc, Cal beats Texas, and Ucla over Utah 9-6. Az leading Stanford 1-0.

Only saw the first three innings of game one, sounds like the BP blew it again. People banging on the offense, but that UW pitcher had impressive stats coming in so maybe he was pretty good? He looked good what I saw early.

    • He was good but wasn’t as good as he usually is as far as sharpness goes. Offense put together a lot of weak at-bats, fared the same against the bullpen. Just didn’t feel like the offense had the right mindset at the plate all game. Bullpen took the L but I didn’t feel the ‘Pen pitched all that poorly.

    • I was really big on him before the season started but he hasn’t really gotten much of a chance because of how well Smith and Rodriguez were playing while he was suspended. Hopefully he can get some consistent at-bats because it’s tough to be effective if you’re only getting to hit once or twice a week.

  17. This was a pretty flawless performance. Great pitching, really good defense, clutch, timely hits from the offense. Offense also kept tacking on runs. Everything that could go right went right in game 2 tonight.

  18. Tomorrow is a big start for Jace Fry. They need him to pitch well. OSU can’t drop a home series to Washington. They need to get the win tomorrow. Gonna need him to step up tomorrow.

    • You know the more I think about it, I don’t think an 8 team playoff is good. I could possibly see a Plus one model. Speaking of wear and tear on the bodies, do you suppose that alll the shoulder issues that we are seeing from our defensive players could be a direct correlation to always having to go with the undersized recruit that they can’t hold up to the grind of a pac12 schedule, and not having enough depth to play additional players has hurt us to stay healthy?

I am not sure our program would be able to hold up in a season and through a playoff run. The extended playoff would only benefit the major programs who have the most depth and highest recruits. I was looking at the Defensive Back depth chart in the paper today, yikes! Behind Poyer we have Keynan Parker who is 5-11 178 and hasn’t played much at all in four years, Brian Watkins another Senior who has seen limited action is 5-9 185. The right corner is better with Rashaad Reynolds and Sean Martin (I think he got hurt last year, right?) then there is Ryan Handford whose never played. Safety has Watkins and Murphy, both who are 6-2 and 6-3 215, but have not excelled at the position. Backups are Wideout and Quarterback prospects Tyrequek zimmerman 5-11 206 and Peter Ashton 6-1 206 who have limited ST action. I can see why we went after more DB’s in this class. But my question is whether going smaller to get speed has been having an adverse effect on the health of the entire position?

      • We probably would have edged Virginia Tech and Michael Vick in an 8 team Playoff in the Fiesta Bowl Year. OSU would have microscopic odds to make a 4 team national playoff. With 8 teams we stand a real shot on a hot year where we are the 2nd Pac-12 team in. The team that makes that could then have a shot. That 2000 team had the pieces to win it all but we were a little lucky to get to a BCS Bowl as it was because of the tight loss against UW. The Pac-12 and Erickson fought for it knowing it was a special year and a special team for OSU. 8 teams is just enough to get a team like that in, which deserves it, and atleast keeps us interested in many more years as maybe being on the cusp of possibly making it.

We just need a coach who doesn’t make excuses and can handle putting on a Spring Game like the other 99% of the major conference schools.

      • Ever hear about a player named about a player named Darryl Green? How about the Rogers brothers? I guess they couldn’t play because they are too small. Yep, little guy middle linebackers like London Fletcher do break down after 15 year careers. The longer season favors the guys in shape, not the sloths. Different sport but Chris Wondolowski has led the MSL in scoring the last two years (as a slow wimpy guy) primarily because of superior conditioning. Zimmerman is a very good player and will be a great Beaver eventually. Ashton, they do not yet know what to do with him. But he is a multitalented. It is unfortunate that Coach Riley is so unimaginative that he can’t figure out how to put the kid in a position to contribute by matching his ability to do many things against opponents that are only good at one thing.

  19. Looking ahead to next week. At ASU. But first we have Portland while Sun Devils rest. ASU split 2 midweek games with Cal State Fullerton. Why is it that the ducks always seen to get an easier schedule?

    • They don’t have an easier schedule, Oregon State does. UO plays @UCLA, @Arizona, @Stanford, they have to play a series @OSU. Oregon State caught a lot of breaks scheduling wise. Nearly all the tough series outside of ASU are at Goss

  20. hopefully this is frye’s coming out party. i also heard parker say earlier that gorton would start and not rodriguez. not sure i’m cool with that, but we shall see.

  21. The Beavers easily could have the series against Arizona, possibly even sweep them. That would have looked incredibly good now. Oh well. Time for the Beavers to get this series win today. Beavers will be looking good at the end of the year if they just win every series from this point on. Hopefully they do that.

    • Only one play was tough and that one Hayes should have caught. That’s the only reason the Huskies have scored. Team lacking focus on defense

  22. I suppose you’ll never get out of a slump if you don’t play and Casey is playing the percentages but can you afford to have both Hayes and Keyes batting in the same game.

  23. Wow three strike outs, two of them looking. I feel like I’m watching our football team today with the lack of execution.

  24. That was a close play. Got runners on first and second and 1 out now for Barnes. Smith and Conforto to follow. Could be a big inning.

  25. Beavers had a chance to put some distance between them and the Huskies and can’t do it. Really needed to extend the lead there. Getting the lead is great but having just a 1 run lead is never comfortable.

  26. So far this weekend the Beavers’ starters have pitched 21 innings and have given up 1 earned run. That is pretty damn impressive.

  27. Really great performance by Fry. Easily his best start as a Beaver. The weekend rotation is looking great. Just need consistency from the bullpen and this team will be looking good.

  28. I have no idea why Yeskie and Casey always do this. Why not bring in Bryant to start the 9th? Why bring him in once someone gets on base? I don’t get it.

    • I was just thinking the same thing. Maybe they were hoping to just stick with Boyd for the whole ninth but weren’t impressed with how he looked?

  29. Man, Tony Bryant has not been the same guy as last season. Much more hittable this season. Him blowing this one would really hurt. He needs to figure it out and close this one out.

  30. Bryant bounces back from the bases loaded 1 out jam to get the save. Was a series the Beavers needed to win and they did.

      • Not too good, I would say. ASU’s offense is so-so on the road but good at home. They have great starting pitching. Very slight edge in starting pitching to ASU. I think this series is gonna come down to the bullpens. I think ASU’s bullpen is better than OSU’s right now. If OSU’s ‘Pen steps up they can win the series but if not ASU will obviously take the series. I can’t see either team sweeping. All 3 games should be tight, I expect 3 one run games. Hopefully the Beavers can come out on top.
