Home Baseball Matt Boyd Starting

Matt Boyd Starting

It's sounding more and more as if Boyd will be the Sunday starter. I've been calling for this three years. Excited to see what he can do. Stamina might be an issue, especially as the season goes on.

The move would also leave the bullpen short a solid lefty. Englebrekt and Painton are unknowns. Reser and Carlos Rodriquez got shelled last year. Can Andrew Moore (RHP) get lefties out? Curious to see how the bullpen shakes out. A lot of arms but not much experience or success other than Bryant.

  1. Boyd proved he could start on the Cape over the summer. I don’t see how Casey could deny him a chance after that. I would guess that as the season progresses if Moore comes along and we need a lefty in the pen Boyd would fill the role if it means success for the team. It would be nice to have 4 quality starters in the post season.
I haven’t heard anything about Davis’ progression over the summer. We know he can throw but. Has he learned how to pitch.

    • Davis’ problem is control. I think batters hit something like .180 against him, but he walked ~1 per inning. He looked nervous at the plate and on the mound, so I am thinking he’ll be better this year.

    • and this team will need to get as many early season victories as possible before conference play starts. Pac-12 will be a grind again. You want to host a regional and super regional. Easiest path to Omaha.

  2. Been awhile since I’ve paid any attention to baseball. So is it Wetzler/Fry/Boyd as the starters?
Think I’ll have to make the trip south and watch the boys in person at least once this year. Another reason I hate that the Timbers took over PGE Park is the loss of OSU baseball exhibitions in Portland. Those were always fun.
Just looked at the schedule. Hardly any games listed as TV games. WTF Pac-12 network??

  3. It’s Welzter/Child/Boyd. Taylor Starr or Schultz will probably be the weekday starter.

Fry’s out the entire year for Tommy John surgery.

  4. Who’s our IF this year? I’m thinking something like this.
    C – Jake
    1B – Danny
    2B – Smith
    SS – Peterson? Keyes?
    3B – Barnes? Keyes?

Will Keyes come back this year? I’m thinking Davis gets the DH nod instead.

OF… all I know for sure is Conforto is going to be there… and probably Gordon. But who fills the other spot? Davis, Barnes and the frosh, Clark, are all utility types who can play all over. And who are the other two who played a lot last year… Dettman and Matthews?

    • At media day Casey said he wants Jake in the game whether at 2B or 3B when not catching; seemed very comfortable with Nate Esposito catching.

As for DH, I’d also lean toward Davis. Casey mentioned that he could work into the rotation or be a closer so that might factor in. At any rate, Keyes will have to show his old form early if he is to DH when not starting in the infield.

Keyes was a disappointment last year after doing so well in ’11; really would be a boost for this club if he gets back on track.

Andy Peterson may make it into the OF; according to Casey he could play OF or IF (except 1B).

    • Outfield will go Conforto in LF, probably a Matthews/Gordon platoon in CF, Barnes in RF. Infield: Rodriguez at 3B, Smith at SS, Keyes at 2B, Hayes at 1B. Esposito at catcher, Davis at DH. But if Davis or Keyes struggle, Jerad Casper or Andy Peterson can step in and I think can get the job done. They’re in a very good spot offensively with some nice depth to their lineup.

      • I’ve always loved the pitchers’ demeanors when Jake is in the field as opposed to at C. He seems to be able to chat up the IF better when he’s looking at the backstop instead of out at the field.

But it’s also going to take something from Keyes for me to think he can actually do something. It’s too bad. I wonder how the scouting report changed between his frosh and soph years.

  5. Did anyone else hear Casey slip in that Keyes was hurt all last year and had surgery during the off season on his shoulder. That might explain why he didn’t play a lot in the Cape. Maybe we should cut him some slack or be annoyed that he tried to play hurt.

What happened to Adam Duke and Jordan Donatov?
