  1. Watching the Stanford-Rice game and the Stanford catcher double and triple clutches the throw back to the pitcher after each pitch. Weirdest thing I’ve ever seen.

  2. Kavin Keyes is 2 of 3 today. This is the kind of start I was hoping he would have today. Hopefully this is the beginning of a nice bounce back season.

  3. JR saves a run by picking off a runner at 2B as the next batter singles. Bryant only lasted 1 and a third as Englebrekt on the mound in the 7th. At the stretch 5-2 Beavs.

  4. Maybe because its such a nice day and great to see baseball get going, but Jay Reese (while no Vin Scully) seems to be doing a decent job announcing today. Not that easy to work without a color man.
    GO BEAVS !

  5. Utah Valley beat Gonzaga in game 1 today, 6-2, but Gonzaga is holding their ace for tomorrow’s matchup with the Beavs.

Final, Beavs 5 Utah Valley 2. Englebrekt with the save.

  6. Beavers win 5-2. Engelbrekt throws 2 2/3 scoreless innings to finish things off in his college debut. Not a bad debut to say the least.

    • Engelbrekt could fill Boyd’s role. Pretty high on him, but we’ll see as the competition increases. Brocker looked great lat year at USCB…

  7. 5 – 2 over Utah Valley State??? My little league could beat them! How much longer are we going to put up with inept baseball coaching. It’ an embarrassment! Just like all our so called “sports” I’m sure BDC is happy. It’s a good thing there are about a 1,000 games in the college baseball season, that’s the only way we will win more than 10. JB

    • UVS was pretty good last year, not sure about this year.
Worst part of that game was Beavs loading the bases with no outs and not getting a run. Typical (of the past few years at least) lack of clutch hitting/productive outs

  8. I don’t think many runs will be scored today. Gonzaga is sending out their ace, Marco Gonzales. He’s REALLY good. Beavers have to make the most of their opportunities against him. I expect Matt Boyd to throw a well pitched game. Game has the makings of a 2-1, 3-2 game.

  9. JRod grounds out but hustles down the line. An arrogant Tyler Smith trots. I wish everyone had the same passion as Jrod. He is going to have a great season!

Clark K’s looking in his debut not good.

    • JRod is a real ballplayer!
His throws from behind the plate always impress me; since Casey plans to use him in the infield some it will be interesting to see if Esposito shows as good an arm from the C position.

  10. Sounds like some fairly aggressive baserunning, an indication of some of the “step on their throat” mentality which we never seem to see in FB?

  11. Two run double from Jerad Casper and it’s 5-2. I was pretty high on him coming into the season and early on he has not disappointed.

    • Nice to see them pick up some late inning insurance runs. It’s something they didn’t do very well last year if I remember right.

HBP RBI made possible because the Zags didn’t want to pitch to Conforto.

  12. San Diego State beat 25th ranked San Diego for a second straight day. Beavers play SDSU for a 4 game series beginning on Thursday. The Aztecs look pretty good so far, should be a nice challenge for the Beavs early on which is never a bad thing.

  13. From today’s Oregonian: Key interest rates:

    Three month treasuries .07
    Six month treasuries .11
    Twelve month treasuries .15
    Sixty month treasuries .85
    OSU basketball -.96

CBI….CBI…. I can’t wait to see the exciting first round matchup against…… some other team!!!

    • I don’t see any way in hell they even get a CBI bid this year. They would probably need to win 4 out of their last 5 games to get consideration. I think it will be interesting to see if they finish with CR’s worst league record since taking over and what happens next. 4-14 or worse after five years is not much to hang your hat on whatever injuries or psychological shortfalls CR can fall back on for comfort.

  14. For those wondering, the Gonzaga vs Utah Valley game is still in progress, at the bottom of the eighth. It’s probable that the network has shoved the pregame show back a half hour to compensate for the 30 minute layover that is required between games. Stay tuned. I’m sure they’ll say something.

  15. Baseball underway. Jake R. at 3B and Esposito catching today. Peterson leading off and Joey M. in the outfield today and Gordon sitting. Dylan Davis gets the start in RF.

In the first Moore strands a runner at second after Joey loses one in the sun. UC-Riverside has 6 LHB in the lineup.

      • Had a lot to do with how when he entered Pac-12 play they pitched him differently. He was a dead pull hitter, teams stopped throwing him the inside fastball and were throwing a lot of off speed pitches away and he didn’t make the adjustment. If he can make the adjustment this season and start hitting the ball to all fields, he can have a very good season.

  16. Beavs put runners across the plate in 5 of the first 6 innings. Conforto taken out for a pinch runner after collecting his 4th walk of the game. After 6, in what could be a 5 hour game, Beavs 14-3.

  17. Keyes a nice sounding stop and throw from 3B to get the second out in the UCR seventh.
Kavin HBP yesterday and a 4 pitch walk today; 2 for 4 on opening day. Hoping he is fully healthy in body and mind, certainly seems that way.

  18. Excited about this team. Chemistry seems even better than last year. Tommasini killed a lot of rallies with the bat and by getting thrown out stealing. So glad he’s gone.

    • Yes. Games have started at 8:30 all tournament long for game 1. Think this is just for travel reasons for both teams to get out of there as soon as possible.

  19. Uncharacteristic play by JRod, apparent PB and poor throw to Keys at 3B.
Somewhat characteristic performance by Davis, story not over but I hope he turns it around.

  20. Another walk by Dylan Davis. Gets out of the inning on a groundout but got to wonder how long Casey sticks with him. Once again he just can’t throw strikes.

    • Offense will score their fair share of runs today, if Dylan struggles again in the 2nd, wouldn’t be surprised if Casey gives the quick hook. A lot of guys ready to go in the ‘Pen ready to go today.

      • Yeah, I was meaning hard for Davis to turn things around in his own performance. Not too worried about the Beavs ability to score and come from behind (as in the first two games).

        • And he’s been pulled as a pitcher. Understandable. I just don’t think starting is a good fit for him. Would fit better as a middle reliever. Comes in pretty pumped up and ready to throw a lot of fastballs. More of a mentality you want from a guy in the bullpen than as a starter. Still needs to work on throwing more strikes, but the bullpen is more suited for him.

  21. Another pitching change as Tyler Painton is in with runners on first and second and 1 out. Beavers pitching certainly not making this game go by quickly.

  22. Looks like I’ll have to retire the “too late Nate” moniker as Yeske calls for another pitching change and we’re only in the second inning

  23. Stolen base for Conforto. Sensing a much more aggressive team on the base paths this year. Team has been looking to swipe a lot of bags to start the season.

  24. Scott Schultz comes in during the top of the 8th with a runner on third and 1 out and and strands the runner at third. Some clutch pitching right there. 4-2 Beavers after 7 1/2 innings.

  25. Why cant we turn a double play? How hard is it on a grounder to second. And why wasnt Casper paying attention instead of looking at the umpire.

    • The radio guy Jay Reece (pinch hitting for Mike Parker) hasn’t been great describing a lot of the plays, so it’s been hard to tell if some of these balls should have been double plays and the Beavs just aren’t turning them well.

  26. 4-4 game in the bottom of the 10th. Time to finally get the win. Would be nice to get the first two guys on in front of Conforto and force them to pitch to him.

  27. Jerad Casper is going to be a solid hitter for OSU this season but man, he really needs to work on his defense. Killing OSU with mistakes in the field.

    • Keyes is having a nice start to the season. Very encouraging. Hopefully he can continue to have productive at-bats and be a consistent performer for this team.

  28. A little concerned about the errors, 6 in 4 games. Bullpen is off to a good start, 0.00 ERA, but Davis’ runs maybe should count. Like what Casey has been doing, going to the hook early, setting the tone for the season, pitch strikes or sit.

Hopefully, we pick it up in a few areas before SDS, who swept San Diego a top 25 team.

  29. OT: This guy has been wrong before, so I am looking for confirmation
    @WGNOsports
Easton Linebacker Edward Williams will attend Texas Tech — according to a source — he will sign his grant in aid in June when he turns 18

    • He was interviewed last Thursday at the Simplot Games, and he clearly answered the question with, “I’m going to ASU, and I’m going to run track.”
