    • We’ll make the NIT if we are about .500. If it’s all about RPI, we could lose the rest of our games and rise 10 spots just because of SOS. That’s why Nikegon is still rated highly even though they really do suck. Our RPI rose almost 10 points from losing bot games last week.

It’s a screwed up system, but it is what it is I guess.

      • While I don’t disagree, .500 in conference play seems to be the magic number. I’ve gone back to the 2010 NIT and can’t find a PAC team that got in despite being below .500 in conference play. 4-3 gets the Beavs to 9-9 in conference play.

        • It’s not conference play. It’s overall record and conference strength. You have to go back to 2008 for the Pac to be as strong as it is now. Remember ASU got screwed out of an NCAA bid (19-12/9-9) while Nikegon (18-13/9-9) and Zony (19-14/8-10) got undeserving bids. And UW (16-16/7-11) didn’t get an NIT bid even though Cal (16-15/6-12) did.

Who knows what numbers are needed anymore?

      • He’s good enough to get documented cheaters off with a slap and a tickle. He should be great at getting a player who did no wrong back in the game.

You’re reaching Linus. But don’t worry. Even if you fail with desperate humor big time here you’re still a mental giant on educk… not that I’m setting the bar high for you there.

PS… I like how you only come out to troll at certain times. Shall we put a little wager on baseball? Our Beavs versus your Ducks?

    • Refs are going to be bad. The only call I really have problems with was the one where Moreland was called for “rebounding while the other guy had a death grip on your arm” call. Guard the perimeter against a tiny team that can’t play defense, and you win this game easily. Play worse defense than them and you lose like we did.

  1. That game should cement a lock to the CBI. Way better and more prestigious than the NIT. Just think about it. Play at home, 2 for 1 admission coupons, easy parking, no bathroom lines. It’s such a big deal that Western Illinois only sent seven players and the other teams head coach didn’t bother to make the trip. AH…good times. BDC’s brain must be on fire with all the creative ways to market! JB

    • It was over in the first five minutes when we let them continue shooting warm-ups instead of guarding a perimeter shooting team on the perimeter. We could have easily won tis game if we came even slightly prepared. But I think they shot 9-9 from outside to start the game. That’s on the coach.

Tey tried to come back and came close late. But they dug too big a hole to start.

      • Actually a pretty entertaining game. We end up losing, but still a entertaining game. If you do end up watching, look for me in the stands!

And while Roberto was at the line the students were chanting S-A-T.

        • Haha. kids can be so cruel. A few years ago Minnesota had a big rolly-poly 7 footer who went from a walk on to a very good player by his senior year. I think it was at Mich State when he was shooting FT’s, the students were chanting “get some muscle tone.” It was pretty funny and Muscle Tone became his nickname with the Gopher fan base.

          • Side note… my wife actually got upset with me because I commented on the four word four-letter word tirade some Duck fan went on at the beginning of the second half. I’ve commented on how Duck fan is just vile at hoops games to the point where Metta World Peace would have to hold back right-minded people.

She seems to think everyone does what Duck fans do. She didn’t reflect back to the Nikegon visit to Corvallis where the highlight of derogatory fan behavior was one kid telling Altman he should relax in order to not raise his blood pressure… which might need to be checked… or something to that effect.

No… Duck fan had to ruin the TV broadcast for my kids by having me turn to them and explain that stupid people say really stupid things that are inadvertantly heard.

I may have said that Ducks do it about… oh… all the time. So maybe that’s what set her off… in a cussing tirade btw.

            Was I wrong?

          • well considering their fans burned the turf at reser after a civil war win, I’d say you’re pretty much spot on. The recent run of success in football has only brought in more bandwagon fans and made their fanbase even worse to deal with

  2. Ok great, looks like Nike money buys another W. I’m so mad, I’m going to load up ALL of the cats in Jacks house into a bag and throw them into the Long Tom River! And if I can find a big enough bag, bdc and crobama is going in with them. I hate watching this team!!!1!1!!!!!

        • For the most part he is clueless. I don’t think robaminson plays the young guys more. There’s still a chance that the beavs win 4 of these last 6 games. Only ucla and ua am I penciling in as losses. Not saying the will but it’s possible. And I think the beavs get the sweep this weekend against the Washington schools. Still play crappy defense and yes Nelson is a matador

          • I agree fully. I’m not saying Dohrmann is wrong in his initial assessment. But he has a penchant for imagining more than there is in any situation. Hell, it got him a Pulitzer once upon a time. So why shouldn’t his erratic rants that pile up one on top of the other count now?

He riffs on things he once wished for. There was a time when Berto didn’t get minutes. Then there was a time when Starks was the reason Berto didn’t produce. Then it was because whatever… besides Berto being a defensive liability… that the Beavs lose. The guy covers hoops but doesn’t really know hoops.

          • I agree with his premise but not how he came to the conclusion. If this team could actually play some defense, they’d be an NCAA tourney team.

          • yes. This team does not value each possession. It’s maddening. I thought it would get better with Burton graduating. But I will admit I was wrong.

          • So jack, you still think the cats lose in boulder? Has the playing field been leveled now that Arizona lost one of their best players to injury?

          • Why would you bother asking that question once Dinwiddie went down? Even the master coaching job and massive scrap and heart of that team doesn’t bring them back to where they were when he was leading them. They’re clearly second tier now.

Dinwiddie is a much better player than Ashley… and everyone on Zony except for Gordon. UA losing Ashley is like CU losing Wesley Gordon. It wounds the team, but they can recover with the pieces still in place.

        • Yeah, in the past Dohrmann has made comments about what a great defensive player Roberto was in high school and AAU ball, so I suppose he blames CR for that decline also.

I don’t see it, in fact I think he’s a step slow on offense too, but he has matured and figured out ways to use body control and positioning to get shots off on the inside. He’s also really improved his foul shooting. i may be wrong, but in the end I don’t think Nelson has the speed to play in the NBA.

          • He was never a great defender.

Neither was Cunningham in high school for that matter. Remember JC in his soph year said he was told as a frosh that he would only see limited minutes so long as his game only tilted to the offensive end. So he worked on it and earned increased minutes. LMW was told the same thing, and now he’s one of our best defenders. In fact, he’s one of the best perimeter defenders in the conference now.

Berto got praise for his offense from day one. Even when he wasn’t playing he was supposedly the best player on the team. He was never told to balance his game, so he never did.

    • I don’t know. Dallas fan was ambivalent about firing him, and Tampa fan has nothing good to say after just one year. I’ve gone from not overwhelmed to underwhelmed about this hire. I guess I hope he’s a better coordinator than he has been a position coach.

I’m putting him in the “gamer not practice player” category right now. Maybe he’ll be better as the big picture guy than he was as the specific position guy.

I guess you can lead in with how is father worked for one of the best football programs in the world and then ask how his experience with three of the worst ever sets him up for knowing what’s right. And ten you can both joke about how he never had to coach for Detroit… and chuckles should ensue.

  3. Some of Connor’s highlights:

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2014/02/oregon_state_introduces_john_g.html#incart_river

While at Dallas, he found rookie Matt Moore “attractive;”

Sounds vaguely Riley-esque – vaguely vague – when talking about what he’ll do to “put his wrinkles in the offense;” and, UNSURPRISINGLY

There’s been no decision for him to call plays, but he’s prepared to do it if asked.

    Sounds like a mediocre-middle-of-the-road-stay-the-course hire….

At least Garret doesn’t favor rule changes, thinks D’s should have to adjust, keep up.

    • On the last note… why do defenses always have to adjust to rule changes (a dozen or so over the last decade alone) , but a rule that favors the D is some conspiracy?

Shouldn’t the offense adapt to a rule change now and again… or even once?

      • On that note, I think a more effective rule would be that once the front five sets themselves in formation they can’t move. No standing out of a squat to look back at the coach for the playcall. No sliding here or there to get your splits right for the call. Once you squat, you’re relying on your QB to relay info and to get you out of that squat before you cramp up.

        • I like George Carlin’s recommendation (paraphrasing): “In football, you’ve got eleven players from each team on the field. What about all those guys on the sideline?!? I say get’em out there!”

      • Crackbacks outlawed. High-low blocking outlawed. Pick plays outlawed. Offense has to allow defense to substitute. Too many men in the huddle. Not all of the changes were meant to handicap the defensive side of the ball.

        • Wrong. Those have been outlawed forever (well… 40 and 50 years ago). Now they’re just being added to the “defenseless player” hit list. Essentially they’re taking something that has always been illegal and making it a hate crime.

In the past twenty years, touching a QB high, hitting a WR (who has the ball), now hitting a RB (who has the ball), jumping into and out of the neutral zone, touching a WR beyond five yards, having too many players within the hashes (during non-play), touching a QB low, just flinching (not jumping into the neutral zone) at the line, wearing a tinted visor, the tuck rule, the horse collar and the non-intentional grounding rule…

… all favor the offense. The defense got the 12 men in the huddle thing (not the within the hashes) in their favor.

In the NFL this year, they’re finally amending the tuck rule to be what they thought it would be when they first passed it. They’re penalizing RBs who initiate hits with the crown of the helmet (not all head shots… just the crown). And there is another rule I forget right now.

          That’s what the defense gets.

          • Dwill03,

Since Jack failed to correct your grammar I will. It is not everyone. Your statement should read: “every one a 15 yard personal foul”. I am sorry that Jack failed to correct you earlier but never worry because I have his back!

            LP

          • Oh pettibonehead, you’re so silly when your desperate.

You also have the wrong guy. I let grammer slide 99% of the time. I only go after two kinds of people. One is the grammer police because they’re almost always guilty of mispelling or poor grammer while trying to point it out in others’ posts. The other is the increasingly poor writing done by supposedly professional writers.

On that note, your grammer police post is chock full o’ lousy grammer. It’s so bad I think you wrote it so poorly intentionally.

We’re here for you boner. You’re our Duck pet and noone else’s. We’ll also be here for you when you come out of this slump. Hope you feel better soon.

          • Jack:

I am a little disappointed that you call me Pettibonehead. I think you have the wrong guy. That guy appears to be cleaver and witty but he is nowhere on the intellectual spectrum that guys like us are! We are the greatest alumni ever!

            LP

        • I forgot… substitution has always been a rule other than the one which is proposed. If the offense substitutes players, it’s always been a rule that the defense should also be allowed to sub. This new rule doesn’t say anything about it, but that’s what it’s for. I’m against the rule itself because they’re too chicken to just call it what it is.

Another couple “unspoken rule changes” are the ways refs are calling games in the face of the up-tempo offenses. Rules that have always been in place are now inconsistently, if ever, called.

The refs hurry to move the down marker on a first down, leaving the chains behind and often missing the spot by a bunch. There have been questionable spots themselves which actually moved the chains instead of the play itself, and because the down marker and cains are in such a hurry to aid the speed offenses, it’s suddenly too late for the defensive side to call for a measurement… let alone questioning the spot (or in some instances whether or not it was a catch, etc.).

Speed offenses are also guilty of WRs staying outside the numbers frequently. The rule that has forever been in place is that every offensive player must come inside the numbers between every play and after every time out. I have never seen that penalty called despite teams being guilty of it frequently in order to facilitate their schemes.

And holding is just egregiously ignored on the edges and in the flats. Hell, it’s egregiously ignored on the line with the spread offenses as well. It’s usually ignored on the interior so long as certain parameters are met (keeping hands inside the defenders arms and under his chin, always pushing not pulling, etc.). But those parameters have mostly disappeared on the interior for spread offenses, and I can probably count less than ten flags in as many years that I’ve seen constant holding on the edges and in the flats by WRs. And I’m not even counting the constant holding that doesn’t fit with the unspoken parameters given to linemen. I’m just talking about offensive players simply grabbing someone and yanking jersey for all to see. Hell, there was a 60 yard TD run by LMJames against Stanford where the Dlineman was just sitting in the hole waiting all alone, and suddenly Carson York reaches out with a full arm extended, grabbed the guy by the facemask and pulled him out of the hole.

If those rules were just called one-fourth the time they were broken, and if refs set game tempo not to obviously enable and aid up-tempo offenses, we wouldn’t need this ten second bullshit.

  4. I didn’t see this until this morning. He says all the right things, and nothing he says is contrary to what we see on the floor except that the Ducks did get some open shots due to poor D, which in turn got them going and confident, thus making some of the tougher shots and being consistent on those open shots that “just happen.”

The only thing that worries me is the rotation of bigs including Olaf. He’s a hybrid 3-4, not a 5. I think he shades the inclusion of him as a 5 as situational, so maybe I’m reading too much into it. And he does talk as if Cheikh (and Manderson) will take the spot from everyone anyway. So maybe the plan will be to move Daniel to the 4 and Olaf to his more natural 3-4 next year.

I will say that Malcolm showed up well, and he was correct about him here. One thing you’ll notice is that Malcolm, Hallice and LMW played more than 80 minutes combined and only had Cooke’s two TOs to show for it. If Angus, Berto and Devon would stop trying to dribble in traffic they might not have had their TOs either. In all, 9 wasn’t a bad count for a whole game.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULN_XO3wIiU#t=624

  5. And on the other side, the frosh and sophs have turned it on after the LA trip. Except for a poor crunch time at ASU, they are playing well down the stretch and have put themselves in within a game of second place and controlling their destiny to keep third place. Four winnable games to finish the season, and Wiese, Hamblin and Hanson have become progressively better as hoopsters. Now if only Ruth could make her tosses.

And maybe Weisner comes back soon? Anyone know what’s wrong with her arm/wrist/hand? Te soft cast says broken or torn something in the wrist area to me.

      • Yes.
Fourteen seasons winning at G. Fox coupled with his time at OSU has shown he can take a group (more than once with little or no experience) and make a TEAM of them. He seems a lock to EARN many more seasons on the job than CR.

        • I like how he talks about basketball; plays, strategies. I wish there was a way the OSU media could relay the questions at post-game interviews – I can figure out the questions only somewhat.

          • Yeah, he not only “talks” he puts it into action. Someone here mentioned awhile back that they noticed the gals looking to the coach for the play. I like how the team is aware of the clock/score and adjusts their pace accordingly.

Sometimes Stephen Nelson posts the same interviews from his TV gig, the sound then is usually OK. He usually plugs this stuff on twitter.
            https://twitter.com/Stephen__Nelson

        • Well, why the hell not move him over? The complacency on the two major men’s sports is just stunning to me. Not to slight the other sports that are doing well, but football and basketall bring a tone of attention. If he could win with Robinson’s players, I assume he could recruit thereafter to sustain momentum, but who knows, maybe his status as a recent and former women’s coach would hurt in recruiting.

I know this is an over-simplification. I’m just tired of watching Robinson piss away games and lose fan interest so early in the season…

  6. Annnnnnd FWIW again, Doug Farrar at S-I has Chricton as #40 best prospect in the country, and the most underrated DE in the draft:

“40. Scott Crichton, DE, Oregon State

Perhaps the most underrated defensive lineman in the nation. Crichton breaks plays down at the line very well and closes with great speed. He’s got the root strength to beat double teams, and the technique to slap blockers around and create havoc. Crichton will reward the team smart enough to take him with a whole lot of production.”

    http://nfl.si.com/2014/02/18/2014-nfl-draft-big-board-combine/2/

Cooks did not make this top-40 list. Six other WRs did.

  7. Hahahahahahaah!! So Coach Rob think Ndyaie (a guy who Gomis plays ahead of)…will be leaviong for the pros soon

” Last March, one writer projected Cheikh N’diaye as the 2013-14 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.

It was a lofty prediction. By most accounts, the three-star recruit was a project. He needed to improve his hands, his offensive game, his fluidity, his basketball IQ, his stamina and his motor.

Still, N’diaye is a true 7-footer. And though he has seldom played the rookie this season, Oregon State coach Craig Robinson believes that height could help ensure an early college exit.

“I think ultimately everyone will be surprised with how good he’s going to be,” Robinson told reporters Tuesday afternoon. “I say this because he’s seven feet tall, but I’ll be surprised if he’ll be here for the entire four years.”

    This dude is really crazy

    • CR might be crazy like a fox, I interpet it as Robinson politicking to save his job. Planting the seed that he has pipeline talent and the program will not take a step back when the seniors leave.

    • I’m not understanding what you don’t understand. N’diaye is going to be really good. I was hoping he would be academically inclined and stay four years, but he may be disciplined and hard-working enough to graduate in three years as well.

And while it might suck when Cheikh leaves, Manderson will be here to take up the slack.

They will both be really good players regardless of who is coach here.

  8. Aaron Fitt tweets, “Several sources have confirmed #OregonState LHP Ben Wetzler was turned in to #NCAA by #Phillies, who drafted him in 5th round last year.”

    #freewetzler

    • Just read that. And the tried to turn kid from wazzu as well, but he recently was cleared. Fitt went unto say that it is not the industry norm to do so. Apparently Phillies upset he didn’t sign. Not a good reputation to have out there hope it bites them in the arse. Fitt also lambasted the NCAA for taking so long to rule on Wetzler, saying they have had the case since November and still haven’t ruled?

    • Talk about being sore losers that a kid decides not to sign. If every MLB team did this every year, half of the college teams would be in ncaa limbo. You ain’t trying if you ain’t extorting kids!

  9. Re Wetzler – I don’t expect the NCAA to cave here. They haven’t in past high profile cases. They will go with the rules are rules justification. With OSU lawyered up, I am thinking a half season suspension at best.

If Wetzler loses his appeal, I expect him to sue the NCAA for damages. And there has been a precedent set with Andrew Oliver a few years ago. He got 750K.
