Beavs hoops starts tonight.

Curious to see how the team plays without Cunningham (nervous about this) and to see if Robinson steps up his coaching. Those are the only interesting story lines for me. I won't be watching, so fill me in.

Go Beavs.

  1. Strange gameplan so far. Beavs have the size advantage down low but are playing a perimeter game. defensive itensity is good to see. Pretty much every shot by Viagra has been contested. collier comes in and the beavs decide to work it inside. Thats more like it

  2. Niagra won’t be able to keep up the threes, but it’s kind of disturbing that the three point line defense is still abysmal. Does anyone know, is Cunningham buried on the bench in Dallas for the year? I thought he was getting good notice in training camp.

  3. Beavers are contesting a lot of these threes, Niagara is just hitting them. They’ll cool off soon. Part of the hot shooting is big guys playing guards and worried about the guards driving past them, don’t want to close out too hard. Niagara won’t stay hot.

  4. Last 5 minutes of the half the defense was a lot better. Not many open looks from 3, forced Niagara to take twos and make contested twos. Niagara stated 6 of 8 from three, went 3 of 9 from that point on. More where you want it. Niagara is gonna shoot a lot of threes, that’s their game, but if OSU plays defense like they did the last 5 minutes of the first, the Beavers should win by 25+.

  5. AC Green on the cover of the Beaver Store flyer that came in the mail today. My wife picked up the mail and said, “I love AC”, oh the glory days.

  6. I watching off and on, I still seeing Burton making the same careless decisions with the basketball. It’s feast or famine with him.

      • And five minutes later he will pass up an open shot and throw a no look pass to Moreland, who surprisingly will not be looking because he won’t be open!

    • You just got to put up with the bad plays cause he can make the kind of passes that nobody else really can. He has great court vision, sometimes I just feel like he thinks he can make any pass no matter the difficulty and that leads to turnovers. However, he can make incredible passes.

  7. Based on the comments, sounds like we have good offense, frustrating defense, and sloppy passing. Sounds the same as last year.

For those who watched, compare/contrast this year vs last?

    • Better offense, passing is fine, defense will be better, just need to fix the rotations on pick and rolls. Like this team more than last year’s.

    • More of the same. Jacking up 3s early in the shot clock, little to no effort on guarding and closing out shooters, big points against crappy teams to get people “excited.” 80+ against Niagra is a joke for a team supposedly contending in the Pac-12. I know a lot will disagree with me- and I would have been one of those people last year- but I saw what we did last year and how we fared against Pac-12 competition and I don’t really see anything to signal improvement. To early to tell though as it has only been 1 game but not a very promising start IMO.

  8. Only thing I think the Beavers need work with is the pick and roll defense. Need to rotate better. It led to some threes. Get that taken care of they’ll be fine defensively.

  9. I didn’t watch all that intently but they just look like a better team, more sure of themselves. A lot to work on (16 turnovers) but show potential and all without Jared.

  10. Giving 83 points isn’t ideal, but I don’t care nearly as much about points allowed as FG%. The Beavers will give up points cause they play up and down and get up shots quickly. There will be more FG attempts than a lot of other college games because of this. OSU held Niagara to 38% shooting, that’s a good sign. Opponents shot almost 46% against OSU last season, if the Beavers can may it closer to 38% like tonight, they’ll win a lot more games this season.

Three point shooting tonight wasn’t where they would want it defensively, but Niagara has some good shooters and made some contested threes. They also made some in transition off turnovers. Limit the turnovers and I think opponents will get less open looks. In the halfcourt offense, I felt the three point defense was okay, they closed out and put a hand up, sometimes shooters just hit shots. I think we’ll see the numbers improve.

  11. Did anyone else see coach Rob, after Nelson bricked the free throw off the front of the rim in the first half, turn to an assistant and say “what the fuck is his problem?”. It was a nice tight camera shot on his face. I laughed, but hopefully we’re not saying that as much as the season goes on.
