  1. First five minutes of the KS game–pretty funny listening to the KS TV announcers-every Beavers basket is followed by:” how did he make that?”

    looking good so far

  2. I like this game because it will be an interesting measuring stick. This is not really even an elite Kansas team yet. We’ll see if the blowout commences or the Beavs can fight back.

  3. It’s getting to the point where playing Burton is a fireable offense. I can’t even fathom why he sees the floor at all. This joke should be a fucking walk-on at best. Excuse my anger but this team could actually be pretty good without him.

    • Starks is doing a lot of selfish shit too. He’s become the definition of ball hog. I noticed that Roberto could have flipped it ahead to him for an easier shot on that steal, but he just kept the ball himself and luckily was fouled.

    • Because we’re already down 2 bigs and he facilitates the offense at least decently?

He is a very flawed player, and can be completely frustrating. But a fire-able offense? Not really lol.

      • I don’t understand why people think he can facilitate the offense. Against any opponent worth a damn he just makes bad decisions. Sure he makes slick passes against joke teams but that doesn’t mean he can facilitate the offense. Plus no words can describe how much of a liability he is on the defensive end.

  4. Oh yeah I’m just loving watching Starks and the Beavs take low percentage shots while Kansas is taking much higher percentage shots.
    JUST FUCKING LOVING IT!!
    NOT!!!

  5. Challie with a nice play at the end of the half to cut the lead to 3.

Gotta be happy with that so far; right in position to beat #10.

  6. Poor officiating, bad shot selection by the usual suspects, and unspectacular defense, yet the Beavs only down 3 at the half. If we clean it up we have a real shot at this one. But who here really believes we’ll clean it up in the 2nd?

  7. Beavs look better than anticipated. Joe looked good against Montana St but Mckalk is right about tonight. As the season progresses I think Olaf’s presence will open up the middle but the Beavs need to finish at the rim better or it won’t matter.

  8. Beavers made their run with a Starks-Nelson-Reid-Shaftenaar-Moreland lineup. Brought some nice energy. Defense got better in the last 4 minutes of the half. Started getting their hands out in the passing lanes and forced tougher shots. Need Roberto to start knocking down some open shots. Nice position to be in against a team like Kansas. Just need to hang tough and make a run late.

  9. All Beavs standing around outside the 3 point line and waiting for the clock to run down. I seem to recall that as being the way they played last year.

  10. Deja Vu all over again. The same way a good bit of the 1st half went.

    What a fucking joke.

    No wait, it isn’t if you’re a Beav fan. It’s a pisser.

    Time to fire BDC.

  11. I’ve about given up on Roberto being a dependable three point shooter. He very rarely shoots in rhythm or makes smart decisions on when to shoot. He’s had a couple of out of this world performances, but tonight is more the norm.

  12. He’s getting to the line and making them though and they are only down 8 without Brandt who could have helped them. They need to quit making the turnovers and really tighten up the defense and allowing KU to get into transition.

  13. Minus Cunningham, these are the same guys that dropped 105 on fellow BIG XII team Texas and were the highest scoring team in the league last year. They just need to play smarter!

  14. Kansas has gotten some nice home calls and no-calls. But we’re really just getting killed in the half-court, where their size and defense makes it impossible for our horrible offensive scheme to score outside of great individual efforts.

In transition and when we play “Street-ball” style, we outplay them pretty handily. But in the half-court they look like a real team and we don’t.

  15. Is Collier ever going to develop a 12-15 foot jump shot? He has some very nice drives, but against longer teams like Kansas it’s a struggle. They are giving him that shot.

  16. What really pisses me off is the Beavs could be a very good team IF they played with discipline.

But they don’t have the coaching necessary to make that happen.

  17. Moreland looks more aggressive on offense off-the-ball. Much better than last year where he’d basically just stand out of the way or score off ORebounds.

  18. Nice interior D! I wish Jack would explain to us that the terrible interior D is actually great D, but we are too stupid to understand it.

  19. And then they get a nice rebound under the basket, but some (I couldn’t see who it was on this computer screen) tries to throw it out when they could have just calmly dribbled to the corner.

  20. So if Bill Self coached the Beaver players would they be a top 25 team and if CR coached these KU guys would they finish 9-9 in the P-12?

    • Think that OSU would still be in same boat even with Jared as other guys would not be as proactive as they have. Last year Would have like to have Angus, but can’t change that.

      • Jared made everybody better. His ability to get to the rim and create his own shot kept the offense from going stagnant, the double teams he drew allowed many to have wide open looks, and his ability to be a one man fast-break kept guys like starks and berto from making dumb plays in transition. Not to mention his defensive abilities that were twice as good as anyone else on the roster. With him back and improved I think we would have been much better this year.

    • And I’m going to say it…..Cunningham should have stayed his ass at OSU…..nice life as the 15th man on the Mavs and they trust him so much aren’t they going to sign Derek Fisher?

  21. They would be improved, but CR can coach, but he needs to minimize mistakes and get out there and go to clinics, meet up with other coaches and I think some better assistants that know their x’s and o’s like Steve Lavin did at St. John’s.

        • Oh snap!

I’ll stop pretending that Lavin didn’t coach last year or that his assistants are hired away so he has to go out and get new ones out of necessity. And I’ll stop pretending that Coach Rob consults with anyone ever about coaching hoops, because apparently only coaches who don’t coach for health reasons have the time to do anything apparently.

          • Jack,

Yes I do know Lavin’s story about his cancer, but I was referring to when he was hired at SJU, was to assemble a good group of assistants. I really like the guy and am glad he’s doing better, but I also like Craig and sometimes wonder he makes the coaching decisions he makes. Bottom line is this, I would like to see him succeed because the last 20+ years have been hard enough and I do think that CR has done a nice job getting the program from rock bottom to respectibility, but they need to press on and take it to the next level (i. e. the NCAA’s or NIT). The fans have waited too long. CR has good recruiters, but I think he can do better with in-game decision making. He never talks about clinics or anything outside of Princeton and Northwestern. BTW, I don’t pretend to know CR’s story, I actually read it a while back, it’s called A Game of Character. Good read!

          • He does the clinics and consultations with mentors and those on the professional level. I think just about every coach does so. I don’t quite understand why it has to be publicized though.

I think I understand the difference you’re pointing to. Stewart, Grace and Pomeday are too young to be known for their coaching skills. But Stewart is considered an up-and-comer. And Grace is well-respected among his peers. Pomeday is green, but he’s still solid.

The latter two are better known for their ability to recruit still. But that will change down the road.

I think what you were saying is that Coach Rob should have stepped into his current role with established assistants instead of developing them as well?

That slow development of the program from top to bottom might be great for a foundation. But that kind of foundation is too often built up by someone else. I think he knows this as well as anyone. That next level needs to be attained this year or next year.

The injuries really do suck. I think there’s enough talent to ride this team into the top 30, but I really thought they would push the top 20 this year with some solid bigs patrolling the lane. The frosh are going to have to mature quickly this year being only 10 deep.

          • Jack,

I really expect your opinion more so than other people on OSU basketball so it’s good to have someone that actually knows what’s going on as I can’t always follow as closely as I’d like to, but I love what CR has done, but feel like his at times taking on two jobs in one with the assistants. David Grace is I think the best on the staff, but do think Pomeday and Stewart will move on soon. Unfortuantely CR did not have a foundation to build from as John did not give him much to work with and what he did in his first year was nothing short of a miracle. The man can coach, but I think down the line he will need to get some guys that are more seasoned on the staff.

          • I think you’re right. Hoops is not like football in that assistants come and go at a rapid pace. So having a static unit at OSU has been something of an anomaly. Both Stewart and Grace were almost gone in the off season, so I don’t see them sticking around long. I think Pomeday is green, but he is a very good recruiter. So someone may pull him away for that.

i agree that the next choices when those guys are hired away should be more established. Coach Rob has had to pull double duty in developing his coaches along with his players. I don’t think we’re at a point in our AD to have the commitment we once had. Getting someone like Mike Dunlap is an investment hire. We were blessed to have Jimmy Anderson, a home grown assistant of the highest level… and a pretty good head until Ernest died. We’re going to need those hires sometime. So I guess holding Coach Rob’s feet to the fire now is better than making lists when the time finally comes.

    • Terrible is a reach, but really what were the options? Shaftenaar would be the only sub and he’s ice cold. Morris-Walker isn’t a shooter, Barton isn’t. Not many options.

      • I think you do have to spot Schaft in that situation. Can’t you have Schaft, Nelson, Starks, Collier and Moreland when you need come from behind offense?

      • Schaft may have been cold and Barton may not be a very good 3 shooter but they’re still better options than Collier and Burton.

    • I know Moreland is a great rebounder and shot blocker, but he needs to figure out an offensive game that is going to get 10-14 points with Angus out. How can he not get off a 10 footer in the lane with his length?

      • Moreland just isn’t confident for whatever reason. He’s shown an ability to drive and score occasionally. If he did it more often, teams would respect that and it opens up lanes for Starks and Nelson. He doesn’t have a bad looking shot, just needs to work on it and be consistent with it. It would be a nice weapon. I’d like to see Olaf see more playing time. He can shoot.

        • You’re right, Moreland doesn’t look half bad even on those threes he has taken. It just seems like he could be a big factor on offensive with his skills. Even the Kansas announcer pointed out how he passed up a shot. On those drives down the lane, he needs to be looking to jam the ball down the baskets throat, not dish off to Burton.

        • Collier has to develop an mid-range jumper or he can kiss the next level goodbye. What’s weird is I swear he was staring to take some of those from the side last year and now he insists on driving every time.

  22. KU shot 60% from the field and outscored the Beavs in the paint, 58-30. Berto was 13-14 from the line and the rest of the beavs 4-12.

      • We are, you just don’t know enough about basketball to know that 60% shooting is exactly what we wanted them to shoot. Jack will explain it to you later.

    • KU size advantage with Withey down low was the difference. Beavers just didn’t have an answer for him. In the zone they were worried about him, left shooters open. Beavers clearly are better in man-to-man defense, but Withey’s presence killed them in the man-to-man. He can score on Moreland, Collier, Olaf, Burton. He also set great picks in the paint that freed up drivers. Having a guy like that down low just cause all the different. Beavers don’t have a legit 7 footer right now and it hurts them defensively.

Also, Burton’s defense sucks and was a big part of the loss. He’s slow and doesn’t move his feet. Led to some easy baskets and Moreland got beat off the bounce a couple times. Despite all that, if Nelson could make a shot, they may have won.

  23. Not having Brandt tonight was huge. He’s the best shooter on the team, when Starks passed it to a big man at the three point line, their outside shots weren’t respected, with Brandt it has to be respected. He knocks down some of those outside shots. Also gives the Beavers another big body. He would have given OSU that 12-14 points they needed from Moreland. His loss will be huge this season. Him being able to consistently knock down open shots will be missed when you have guys like Moreland, Burton and Collier out there.

  24. Very good Pac-12 Championship Game. As welll as UCLA is playing, OSU better score 49+ tomorrow if they want the Alamo Bowl. That’s assuming Stanford can come back and win, otherwise we are automaticallly in the Holiday Bowl.

    • He was wide open, Hogan just threw it a bit late. But UCLA can’t let that happen on 3rd and 15. Bad defense. Thought I was watching OSU.

  25. David Shaw has done a great job. In the month of November his team needed to win 4 consecutive games to reach Rose Bowl and they got it done every single time. Imagine that, a coach that actually wins big games with the pressure on.

    • I agree, the have the caliber of coach (actually both UCLA and Stanford have two great winning coaches) to motivate their team to win and have the playbook to do it. One of the best played games of the year. Both teams deserve to go to the best bowls possible, even over OSU. The thought of Beavers and Riley beating up on Nicholls State makes me puke. Would not prove anything to me on how great team or Barney Fife Riley is.

    • That’s up to the Alamo Bowl committee. They are free to choose the beavers or UCLA. I think they will pick the Beavers as OSU fans are going to travel better than FUCLA. We also have 9 overall wins, 6-3 conference record and beat FUCLA head to head. Jesus, the Pac-12 title game looked half empty. We’ll find out Sunday evening.

      • I just have to ask.

My father got his BS at UCLA and his PhD at OSU. He knows nothing of any supposed “rivalry” with Stanford. There’s USCum and Cal… where his father was a big wig as an MBA alum.

But never have I, or anyone I know, thought that UCLA was a team we had to be so amped about that we decided to start using Cal nick-names for them when typing them into our pooters.

        So… what gives?
