  1. So the plan for this game is to hassle Wilcox outside the arc, help D on Andrews when he drives and make Blackwell play D first by playing inside-out.

It’s okay to let Wilcox score in the high teens. But he doesn’t get to the line all that much, meaning he’s not a slasher. So be on him whenever he gets the ball if you can’t deny him. Make him hesitate always from beyond the arc, and you have a good shot at beating UW.

Andrews likes to drive and dish. As a result, he gets to the line when there’s no help. We’ve been disciplined lately with the bigs stopping the drive in the lane, spotting the shooters on the strong side and not dropping to reach on the drive and having our offside swing or big defend the hoop. If the man beaten by the drive stays strong on the weak side of the drive and keeps his hands up, the off-side spot up shooters won’t be seen.

And UW plays three bigs. Simmons is more of a swing at 6’7″. Kemp is a decent load at 6’9″ and 250#. But it’s Blackwell at 6’9″ and 275# that we need to force to play D on our bigs first. Get him in early foul trouble and we take him out of the game. He can be a pain on the offensive end if we don’t block him out, take his aggressiveness away by making him concentrate on D or just put him on the bench with fouls. Kemp and Simmons aren’t spectacular on the boards. So taking Blackwell out leaves Anderson (a guard) as the man to watch for boards. Anderson is actually their leading rebounder and can take some O-boards down as well. But if we limit Wilcox on the outside and Blackwell on the blocks, Anderson can have a great day in a losing effort.

We need to stay in man almost exclusively. We should never see the 2-3 when Wilcox is on the floor. And we should never see the 1-3-1 unless it’s just a quick show at half court (that drops back into a real D) to see if we can get a cheap turnover.

    • UW is small. Starts 4 guards and likes to run a bit. If the beavs can pound the inside and get to the line, it’ll be a long day for UW. Brandt or Moreland will have a 6’5 guy on him at the start of the game. Exploiting that matchup will be key. When OSU goes to 3 bigs, UW won’t be able to match.

  2. Probably just wishful thinking on my part…. The last game I’ve seen is the Oregon game and then it was only part of the game but it looked to me like, during the game, one of CR’s assistants was drawing up plays and talking to CR about them as the game was in progress.

Could it be that CR is getting input from his staff about how to play D?

In the last couple of games has the team’s D play improved?

  3. Angry, you either need to write a throwaway disparaging comment, no comment, or no game thread at all if you want the beavs to win.

When you show hope they lose! :P

  4. The guy that Jack doesn’t mention goes off for a career high 32. Beavs outscored 52-34 in the paint (so much for our inside advantage) and give up 54 points in the second half.

Beavs average home attendance is 3897 and this isn’t going to help.

I guess the AB crowd expected as much, only 8 posts for the game thread?!!

  5. Yeah, I expected it…… they have that 2nd half fadeaway down to a science. How many times have they done that this season? Too disinterested to look….

  6. So I watched the game last night and again this morning. And I have to rant about officiating for once this season I guess.

I was red-faced in the first half for refs calling absolutely nothing inside on UW. They were ticky-tack on the perimeter, but UW was setting multiple moving screens inside to block the defensive rotations and to pick defenders off the drives. Normally I would call this an awesome scheme/plan/whatever. If it was well run, stationary double screens and back screens are a thing of beauty. But they were moving so much their own players were getting chipped in the process as well.

As the half wore on, I was happy to see the Beavs move beyond the dirty play and the absent refs. I haven’t seen our team do that before. It was like they realized they were better, and they just started beating UW down. And it seemed to carry on into the second half.

Then there came a call against UW which was a more than valid call. But Romar got on the refs about it, and they completely swallowed their whistles. They had to call the obvious two or three maulings UW committed through the rest of the game. But there were at least four times as many which would have been called in the first half as well. And the interior dirty play seemed to only be emboldened by the lack of overall calls. Until the last minute of play their screens turned from the moving variety with flared elbows that were common in the first half into them full on reaching out and grabbing arms and jerseys and even three or four bear hugs. And I’m not talking the kind of screen where you hold your arms out like you want a hug, and the defender is trying to go through you to get behind you. I’m talking about them standing behind one of our guys and literally giving them a bear hug so they can’t move forward to get to the shooter… arms wrapped around the body and all.

And the obvious travels occurring over the last 15 minutes were beyond NBA bad. Wilcox lifts his foot on a rocker step to shake Moreland on the perimeter, leading to a step back jumper to the left. That’s a forgivable miss by the refs if it happens once. But they called him on it earlier in the game. That was the point I knew something bad was going to happen. Williams-Goss gets fouled then takes three full steps to get to the rim and put in a lay-up. Even in the last 30 seconds Andrews gets the easy transition hoop, picks up the ball and takes two steps then puts the ball back on the floor and dribbles out to kill time.

Wilcox also had the transition put back dunk… which was clearly in the cylinder when he grabbed it. They were even nice enough to show a replay from below the rim which showed it clearly, not that Ernie Kent would have said anything about it. Does that guy ever shut up? It’s like he’s one stream of conscious voice talking about everything except the game he’s watching and vacations in Mexico. Holy crap that dude can talk.

But my favorite non-call of the night was when Wilcox comes to a stutter stop on the right side of the lane. I don’t get pissed off about stutter stops or walking stops any more. The jump stop died years ago, and the pivot foot became an optional thing. So it didn’t surprise me when Wilcox picked up his pivot on this play. What did surprise me was that he then picked up his other foot and jump-spun into the lane with another stutter stop.

“Well,” I thought, “that will certainly be called.” Okay, I didn’t think that. I just silently called “walk” under my breath.

It wasn’t called. In fact, Wilcox then picks up his pivot and shuffles backward with both feet in order to put a shot fake on. Then he steps forward again with his third pivot foot since he’s picked up the ball, and he does a full on legal lay-up step and a half… as if that was where he picked up the ball.

Don’t get me wrong. The Beavs did enough wrong to lose. But UW did nothing to win without the refs. If they call it in the second half like they did in the first, OSU wins by 10 even with all the bad play.

    • Twice? You really are a glutton for punishment. I listened to bits and pieces on the radio. When I heard we were down 10 in the 2nd half, I didn’t tune back in. Already knew how it was going to end.

    • You watched that game TWICE??? My sincere condolences.

Remember PBH’s patented DVR Probation Program. A basketball game can be done in just over an hour. Play…watch.. fast forward….delete…rinse… don’t repeat. JB

      • Think a slower, less athletic Ron Harper. He’s big for a SG, and he likes to slash. But he also has good range and takes/makes a lot of FTs. He can consistently fill it up from just about anywhere.

There was some question about him going D1 after his frosh year so he would be a 4×3. I guess he’s at a Juco for reasons other than academics.

    • Not Texas Defensive POY. He received defensive MVP in his district but that is not the top honor. Top district honor is District MVP. Medium sized fish in a small pond.

    • Height isn’t a problem in this case. CBs typically are short (helps with hip movement), has nice quickness but I am unsure if he will convert on the Divison I level. Looks like a project player. I am curious to see what he looks like as a returner, may be his best position.

  7. OT – OLive article on Wyden chairing Senate Finance Committee:

    http://www.oregonlive.com/mapes/index.ssf/2014/01/with_finance_committee_chairma.html#incart_m-rpt-1

Quote attributed to Phil Knight, 1992:

“In 1992, Nike Chairman Phil Knight told his employees in crude terms how important it was that Oregon Sen. Bob Packwood, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, win re-election.

“The single most important man standing between Customs and the rape of our corporate body,” Knight said as the Republican senator stood beside him at Nike headquarters in Beaverton, “is our guest today, Sen. Bob Packwood.”

Yeah, that Nike corporate body, always a’gettin’ raped….sheesh.
