  1. What would be the estimated buyout of Riley should he be lackluster this year. Hate to say it but short of 7 wins I will be almost completely checked out. Can’t stomach a 7th straight loss to the Ducks. BDC’s dumbass extensions be damned. I think this program is on the verge of losing more support as the Riley plateau and now it is a slow decline folks gain considerable credibilty. 14 years with Riley and looks like there won’t even be 1 Holiday Bowl. That is sooooo much time to give for lukewarm results. Have to think we could havr had similar or better top end results over that time if maybe half of those years were with a different coach. Be honest..we know how this mediocre tale ends. 20 years given to Riley and hid best finish is a ridiculous Alamo Bowl loss where he failed to call a timeout for 15 seconds.

BDC and too much of the same old with subalpine peaks in the past and only foothills being won to look forward to have made this a make or break season for me. Can’t just watch us do the same things over again and accept repeated defeats by the Ducks without wanting something new. Either BDC goes or I and I imagine maybe thousands others do.

  2. Some discussion about the roster sizes, league setup, etc. Any thoughts?

We could definitely shrink the roster size. I’ve never seen a league that big- almost all mine have been size=16.

However, I’d be open to trying the large roster size, for a few reasons:
    • It’s a 10 team league, when IMO 12 team is ideal for competitive leagues. Larger roster (or more teams) means you have to dig deeper to find waiver wire / free agent options.
    • It’s a keeper league, so gives you the flexibility to hold onto players for keeper reasons without as much impact to the current season.
    • There is an extra WR spot compared to standard, which generally requires an extra roster spot to balance out.
But, all of those reasons are impaired or invalid with a RB/WR limit of 6 apiece. Just to fill my roster, I would probably be looking at carrying 3 QBs and 3 TEs. That would completely kill the depth at those positions for the season if a lot of people did it. Even worse would be people carrying 2-3 defenses or kickers. In that case you’d pretty much be stuck with the kicker and defense(s) that you drafted, which are frankly a total crapshoot in the preseason.

I’ve never played with max limits on players at a position, but you may want it with a roster size of 20 to prevent players from screwing up the market (10 QBs!). It should just be set higher to prevent imbalance. My target roster of 20 would probably look something like this:

    2 QB
    5-9 RB
    5-9 WR
    (14 total RB/WR)
    2 TE
    1 DEF
    1 K

    • I am thinking we should do 12 teams, or we should reduce roster size to 16, rather than up the limits at the skill positions. But let’s hear what people think.

    • Shrinking the roster size probably the easiest solution. Still think a limit of 6 is a bit restrictive though. Usually, between the RB and WR positions, I try to go “quality” on one and “quantity” on the other.

Curious for those that have played this way- what’s the value of restricting positions? Assuming people are playing rationally and not hoarding at random positions.

  3. Someone needs to make a team named “Ranker & Biley” — sounds like a bad law firm.
I’m the Corvallis Bike Riders and plan to stick with that.

“More with less” is a good team name. Need one about turning stones to find diamonds in the rough, too. Maybe “low hanging fruit”? hahahhah

    • Like ‘Low Hanging Fruit.” I suggest “Charcoal Briquettes” for anyone who wants a team name related to Riley’s “diamonds in the rough.”

The irony about the whole diamonds in the rough is the lack of “pressure” in Riley’s program; which explain why most of them stay briquettes.

OT – anyone going to practice today? The cynic in me can hear Riley already:

“Today is the first step towards finding your identity….”

Let’s see how a more informed Garret’s “attention-to-detail” is expressed in fall camp – new packages? Increased offensive diversity?

  4. Names for those who couldn’t be here: Peko’s Playaz, Simi’s Squad, One Last Class…

Assistant Centric: Bear Crawlz 4eva, Kidney’s for Contracts, Read’s Special Teams: or is it Special Ed

  5. I’m not playing ( I’m In 3 leagues that’s already too much) but some team name gems:

    – Where’s Simi?

    – Peko Finds Kuli

    – The Fly Sweep

    – Finding Our Identity

    – Hip Hip Hooray!!

  6. Word from camp is Peko has to write one last sentence and he will have finished his class. Then he should, perhaps, might be cleared to join the team or not. It may all hinge on proper punctuation.

  7. Sounds like Rahmel Dockery must have been cleared by the NCAA to participate because he’s at practice today, according to the tweeters.

Angry, do you want camp related stuff in this thread? wasn’t sure if it would muddy up your fantasy football thread with unrelated topics, since, you know…..we always stay on topic around here

  8. i got an email from beaver marketing over the weekend that i won a pair of club level tix to 1 of 2 games of my choice. PSU or ASU. Seemed like an easy choice. Has anybody here sat in the club section? What are the perks?

    • Never sat in Club level. Only advantage I know of is that’s the only place they serve beer. Those of us regular season ticket holders who try to get up there to get a beer get shut down with a condescending look, almost like the flight attendant who quickly shuts the curtain to first class starring at you like “Maybe if you worked a little harder, I wouldn’t have to be doing this” – Seinfeld. You’ll be rubbing elbows with the Beaver elite my friend.

        • So does club level mean I’m still not able to go into that indoor section where people are playing air hockey and watching the big screens?

          • Yup! I got that email too…there must not have been a lot of response or our responses were in the top. I live/work about an hour north of Corvallis. So I asked my boss if I could go to the 4pm session with me leaving around 2:45-3pm and he approved. I work 8-5, so I’ll work thru my lunch and take the hour/hour 15 mins off unpaid. I think it’ll be worth it. So if any of you want me to ask Riley any questions, I’ll make a forum column for it…you’ll have a week and a half to come up with questions…I’m not really coming up with any and I’ll screen them to what I feel would be prudent.

      • I was surprised when I looked up the value of those tix. $139 each!

Season tickets in the wings of the upper level are about $160 for an entire season, and they’re really not that far away, although they’re uncovered.

      • Hey Beavers4life, did you get this email today too? I’m really tempted to go, but it would mean taking time off work. It’s too bad it’s not on a Saturday

        “Congratulations,

You have already received 2 tickets for an upcoming OSU game but we have selected a small handful of you as our next level winners. We would like to invite you to join us for a special day of behind the scenes access to our first day of practice with full pads, which is August 18th at 9 AM and again at 4 PM. As you probably know, Coach Riley is one of the few coaches who still allows fans to view all of his practices but we want to provide you with a next level experience. We will have a designated area for you to view practice from, give you a tour of the Valley Football Center and you’ll even get a chance to meet Coach Riley. “

      • They descend from the ceiling amidst fog and green and yellow laser lights, and apply themselves to each player. Filled with cooling gel, these blue collars are also equipped with Bluetooth speakers that allow Phil Knight to whisper to each player; their haptic capabilities allow Knight to “pat each player on the back” after a good play, GPS technology in the blue collars allows Nike to monitor each player’s position on every single play and inform post-game, 3 dimensional holographic renderings of every play.

They want blue collar they should hire Riley and his lunch pail…what do you think his high end would be with the Ducks? 9 wins?

        • I just love that the team with the posh, $68M Football facility needs their underpaid, Indonesian garment workers to sew blue collars onto their practice jerseys to remind them they need to be more blue collar.

    • Can our staff show these articles to prospective WR recruits? How can we not get our foot in the door with some of the more elite recruits at that position? Cooks is a great example that sometimes the rating do matter.

      • If you look at the comments, there is one by “Douglas Williams” which is what should be shown prospective recruits, as well.

  9. Eggers has a fairly in-depth piece on the O-line today. First I had heard that Seumalo had a 2nd surgery last year because of difficulties healing from the first. sounds like he tried to use his foot a little too much too early. The hope is he’ll be back by the San Diego state game (game 3) but there’s even a mention of the possibility of red-shirting if healing takes too long. Sounds like the former is more likely than the latter, but “luck o the beavs” could have something to say about that.

  10. We have 2 more openings if we’re doing 10 teams, and 4 if we’re doing 12.

Let me know soon if interested, otherwise I will recruit the final owners from elsewhere.
