Oregon Fires Helfrich

240

Personally, as a Beaver fan, this is great news. The guy was the last link to the great Chip Kelly. The further Oregon gets from Chip, the better as far as I’m concerned. He was their Knute Rockne, Pop Warner, Urban Meyer, etc. A once in a lifetime coach. Now they’ve willingly severed the last link to that era. Great news as a Beaver fan.

For them, I think the next hire will be a step backward unless it’s Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, or Jim Harbaugh. Short of that, this is a very poor move that will set the program back. The Western Michigan guy is a fraud, the Florida guy is mediocre (no better than Helfrich at least), etc. I haven’t heard one name that scares me. I’ll wait to see who they hire, but it’s one one of the top 5 best coaches in the game, then this will be a step backward. They will lose recruits, they will have to implement a new scheme, they will have to have players buy into it. You’re looking at a year or two just for that, and at that point the head coach then has to deliver. Meanwhile, WSU, OSU, and others in the division are getting better.

Bad move pending the new hire.

  1. I heard the Oregon players are angry. Plus the players were notified via text. A text!! I cant believe how badly Oregon is handling this. I think Mark H is a classy guy. Oregon has no class. Now I truly know Oregon is Nike U. Looked how they handled firing there coach. I bet some players will transfers over this.

    • Mullens seems like a low life. Probably worried about his own job and felt he had to take action. Hey, good for the Beavers. Helfrich gets a nice buyout. Oregon is the big loser at this point. Let’s see who they hire. Funny they think some of these names (Fleck, Florida dude) are upgrades…

      • Angry (also any one else who can weigh in?),

If there is fallout, any possibility we may obtain a recruit or two from them? Could see being a cross town rival this would be frowned upon, but if there wasn’t any overt attempt to poach?

        • Frowned upon? There’s no frowning in recruiting. I guarantee we’ve contacted everybody we have interest, if we ever stopped contacting them in the first place.

      • This happens all the time with coaching changes. It’s just the way it is. It’ll never be a clean break.

When Dennis Erickson left OSU, the players first heard about it watching ESPN, then they were called to a team meeting to get the news from Erickson himself who had just flown back.

  2. “… but it’s one one of the top 5 best coaches in the game…
    Should say?…but if it’s not one of…..

Along with the other factors listed, just learning new terminology will be a hurdle for some of these prima donnas. Certainly a welcome setback in swooshville. Wonder how Herbert (who refused requests for interviews after the CW) will respond.

  3. Given they were using 2 new coordinators this year, and 2 QBs with zero P5 experience, and numerous injuries on their lines, as well as Royce Freeman and Brown being injured for big parts of the season, and multiple dipshit players getting into legal trouble, they actually were a decent team this year. Their offense could still put up big numbers. Their defense has never been good, even without the injuries. Oh well, like others have said, not our problem.

  4. I don’t see them going for a full rebuild. I think they want a quick turnaround and rise to prominence. I think that the lifespan of
“uncle Phil” is a factor here. Not to be morbid or wish ill on someone (I appreciate the numerous nonsports donations he has made in the state) but it seems like the program lacked patience for at least a couple of years now.

    • Classy post, and all true.
While I don’t agree with how Phil got his millions, he has given back some.
An example of filthy rich living: I met a guy who got a good deal on a Kubota tractor which Phil had owned; Phil came home one day and saw an employee on it and immediately said we’ve got to get rid of it, wrong color,…….changed to John Deere.

  5. Whoever they get, they better have an eye for defensive talent. The last two years were historically bad. They dodged one bullet because of Vernon Adams, but missed on Prukop. Herbert looks promising, but they are never getting back to championship caliber if they can’t stop anyone.

From the outside, it looks like Helfich just couldn’t recruit/develop talent like Kelly for whatever reasons and it caught up with him pretty quickly. Duck fans probably don’t understantd that there has been a nice upgrade in coaching talent in the North with Petersen, Leach and Anderson also. The program is in for a long stint with good being the upside not elite anymore.

      • Petersen would never get the freedom he wants, and Nikegon would never give it to anyone. The school itself doesn’t really have much say in their new “free market” approach to education. Hell, small businesses and property owners along a major thoroughfare in Eugene don’t have a say anymore because a rich guy so benevolently gave a contract to the school itself… a contract void of any talk about returns on investment… er, gift… or partial ownership of patents earned by others… I’m sure.

Add the way in which Bellotti was ceremoniously marched onto the rolls of PERS with a cocktail napkin, having to find a new coach without the words “show cause” attached to his name and the willingness to waste millions to get rid of Helfrich… and then I have to question what leader of young people would be willing to take money to exist in that vacuum?

If their answer is only the money, more power to them. Winning would extend the payday, but it’s really ancillary once the original contract is signed.

  6. I wouldn’t be so hasty to write off the Duck program after this. The core decision makers in the AD have a history of making good hires in football, basketball, and baseball. I think they got what they asked for in Helfrich: stability for a few years, but an uncertain future. They have the money and, to some degree, prestige level to bring in a quality coach, and a track record of doing so.

    Respect thy enemy.

    • Good gives them respect. I will be surprised if they are elite again. Kelly and Mariota types are once every two or three decades unless you are Ohio St. or Alabama. This is all kind of boring until Saban and Meyer quit coaching. There’s only two teams going to the NC each season and it ain’t going to be Oregon again.

  7. Also, Angry: what’s your beef with Fleck? I remember you praising him a few years ago during his rise to prominence. In fact, I think you were the first person to bring him to my attention. I don’t see much evidence there to declare him a fraud.

    • He will go to Purdue. Family is in the Chicago area. He can row there from WSU.
Art Briles? Same offense, basically, and a low life. Perfect for Eugene.

      • You can only beat the teams you play. They played MSU and tOSU last year and have USC and MSU on the schedule next year, so it’s not like he’s shying away from top competition.

I agree he’s unproven, but calling him a fraud is off the mark.

    • Turning lowly Western Michigan into a decent team with a top 30 recruiting class takes talent. The dude is crazy and from what I’ve seen is a great motivator. Just because they haven’t played anyone great doesn’t mean that he’s a fraud. People said the same thing about Boise St. not playing anyone great but regardless of conference if you win every game you are doing something right.

        • I’ve watched him for years. His energy is pretty consistently high. I think it was him in a video I posted a couple years ago as a perfect post-game presser in a loss. He just matter-of-factly answered every question with logistical football-speak.

I think that’s what turns off some when our staff is talking about football. They’re always looking for the next improvement in logistics, and that’s a sharp contrast from the last staff’s warm fuzzy hem haws. And when you’re looking for constant improvement without winning, it starts to sound like an excuse. It’s not. I fully expect when winning that a question will be asked of a certain play that was just lucky, and the immediate answer will be less the praise of the individuals involved than a scolding that it will not work against next week’s opponent… or that it wasn’t practiced that way.

      • Gary Andersen turned Utah State into a 12 win team. Riley turned OSU into a 10 win team. Fine, Fleck turned lowly WM into a decent team. Maybe he did like B. Baldwin at Eastern Washington and went outside the box with recruiting. Baldwin went for P5 rejects from the area then bullied other teams. Maybe Fleck went after questionable character guys to get better talent in there? Don’t know, but I’m saying there are short-cut and creative ways to do all that. Erickson did that at OSU. None of it makes them great. Just did quick research and saw some guys got charged with armed robbery, which supports the theory he recruited higher talent/lower character guys. Make jokes that will fit in well at Oregon.

Still, I don’t see him as great. Not sold. And Helfrich was closely associated with Chip. The further Oregon moves from their golden years the better.

  8. I’m sure they are nervous in Huskerland that their coach in waiting, Scott Frost, will get hired back in Eugene. Then who is the fallback option after Simple Jack?

  9. UO should put these requirements in their HC job description:

    1. Edgy. Requirement not defined, because, you know, its too edgy.
    2. Manic.
    3. Attention-loving. All attention is good, applicant is expected to understand and embrace this principle.
    4. Willing to let super booster/owner Phil Knight call at least one offensive play per game.
    5. Able to deflect media and shield from public view police reports regarding UO football players misconduct.
    6. Must be willing to field team in uniforms that are not school colors.
    7. Able to win the day while assisting UO in moving beyond its past and get super booster/owner Phil Knight a championship.
    8. Ability to pretend Voodoo Donuts are not overrated/overpriced.
    9. Able to win the day while maintaining uniquely edgy identity.
    10. Must be tolerable of sleazy AD who won’t be seen with you if you lose
    11. Win the day, but be your edgy self.

  10. I disagree that this is a benefit to OSU. It might be a short term gain but in the long run, I don’t think it’s going to end up being a benefit no matter who they hire. UO has the money to prop themselves up, they will not be wandering the wilderness. If the new coach doesn’t work out, they can still fire him and have the $ to hire a top coach again.

Had Helfrich stayed, the program may have sunk further. By firing him, they did what OSU didn’t do with Riley. OSU let him stay on too long, UO wasn’t going to do the same. They haven’t dug themselves into a deep hole like the Beavs did.

I think they’ll hire a current head coach. I’m feeling Les Miles isn’t that interested.

My guess is that they go after Kevin Sumlin of Texas A&M.

    • “they will not be wandering the wilderness. If the new coach doesn’t work out, they can still fire him and have the $ to hire a top coach again.”

Because nothing says success, achievement and steadiness like constant change and upheaval?

      • No, you keep tossing out the big bucks until you get it right… Just like the fuskies have done.

Hopefully it will take the ‘ucks as long to get it right as it took the fuskies.

    • In truth, you can’t worry about whether or not its a benefit or not.

They have a coach you can’t beat? Hire a better coach yourself. I know its not quite THAT easy, but you focus on what you can control. If they bring in a great innovator,

I’d expect that Andersen/Clune – with their own recruits and a healthy squad – could compete with Kelly/Helfrich for example. Kelly would likely win more, and there might still be some blowouts (see Andersen’s Wisconsin finale against Ohio), but I think overall the competition would be more consistent than Riley/Banker and Andersen/Clune would take a few, but not a majority.

I don’t care who they hire, beat their asses. If he makes $10M a year, so much sweeter.

    • Sumlin has no reason to come to Oregon. He’s in the premier college football conference in the premier football state at a school with an obsessive fanbase that can afford to pay him more if they really have to.

      • You can say that for both Texas and Tennessee. Not only do they have massive amounts of money but they’re also in prime recruiting country. Money alone will not make Oregon a winner. Chip Kelly was legitimately a once in a generation college coach. I would put him up there with Saban and Urban. I’d imagine he’d have similar results with the talent those two have. I don’t foresee Oregon getting that lucky again. Now, this isn’t to say they won’t get a good coach who wins a lot of games, but they won’t be the caliber that they were during the Kelly stretch.

  11. “Thank you for calling Pettibonehead Low-Performance Labs” We are experiencing an unusually high call volume. Your call is very important to us and will be answered in the order received. You are currently number 63″ Your is expected wait time is 2-3 days.”

“While you are on hold please enjoy a recording of Coach Pettibonehead’s greatest victories” (Only lasts 90 seconds.)

    Sincerely

    Ms. May Kadoody Executive Assistant

  12. Canzano speculates Greg Schiano:

“While Oregon and Oregon State were kicking off in a Civil War that would expose the Ducks defense as gentle unit, Knight was in Columbus, 2,064 aerial miles away, giving a victory speech in the Ohio State locker room.

“Of the Top 25 NCAA teams, Nike supplies 20 of them and none of those teams are we more proud of than the one in this dressing room,” said Knight. “Congratulations. You were fabulous.”

Knight looked joyful and engaged. He was in the presence of a winning program that made him proud. But it was who was in the room, particularly taking a knee to Knight’s left, near the smiling Meyer, that caught my attention. That would be Buckeyes defensive coordinator Greg Schiano. Because regardless of how and why Knight ended up in that locker room, it’s Schiano who has emerged as a strong candidate in this search.

Schiano was on a knee, looking at Knight as he spoke. It was fitting, too, because all afternoon the Nike founder looked at Schiano’s Buckeyes defense.

I’m wondering if the Ducks are about to become Ohio State Northwest. Because down deep, all Knight ever wanted was to be proud of his Ducks.”

    http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/index.ssf/2016/11/canzano_oregon_fires_mark_helf.html#incart_big-photo

    • “Because down deep, all Knight ever wanted was to be proud of his Ducks.”

So he wasn’t proud of “his” ducks when chipster was there? Or just when helf was there? Or, huh?

    • I was surprised by his words in that locker room too, until I looked more closely at what he actually said. See Oregon wasn’t ranked, but of those 20 ranked Nike teams, Ohio State was the best. Doesn’t mean whoregon isn’t their favorite princess

    • For somebody so rich and influential, that piece makes Knight sound like a cloying, fawning scumbag.

And the timing of it, during UO’s own rivalry game? Wow. Classless.

  13. As usual, I couldn’t disagree with you any more Angry. Helfrich just turned in their worst season in ages. That’s great for the Beavs. With the money they have in their pocket I’m very concerned about who they might get. Do some research in Fleck and he seems like the real deal. Schisms is impressive too.

  14. Beavs are getting an official visit from Samoan Juliano Faliniko this weekend. He’s a USC commit, with other really good offers.

The Samoan kids are usually pretty loyal to the teams they verbal commit to, though. Would be a huge upset if we could land him.

  15. ESPN talking heads are worried about the airport.

Chantel Jennings: You have to drive to two hours to get to a major airport. Everyone’s doing the uniform thing now. Everyone runs a spread offense. Everyone gives their players a bunch of swag. They have the Phil Knight connection, but at this point, how much does that actually result in a net positive? With USC and Washington rising, I don’t think it’s anything special.

Mark Schlabach: Like Chantel said, it’s just so hard to get to Eugene.

Erik McKinney: It’s always going to be a good job, but I think it will have a tough time breaking into that “great job” category. The kids all want to go visit. They get there and they realize what that commute would be, what that flight is, what that drive is from the airport to Eugene. That last part of it, getting them to sign off on that distance, is tough, and you’re not moving the campus.

    Blah, blah, blah.

    • Waiting for the day when Knight builds a helipad at the “Football Operations Center” to overcome this….a swoosh and an “O” on the side, zooming direct to/from PDX, within sight of I-5 corridor for maximum exposure.

I think this illegal for recruits, but I doubt for coaching staff, super-boosters…

    • Don’t these morons know Eugene has an airport with commercial flights? For god sake can these guys try and do just a tiny bit of research.

    • Awesome delusions.

Imagine how tough it must be for opposing teams who then have to face you on your home field… and how that may make you look really good since they still have it in their heads how hard… *sniff*… how really hard it is to get to an airport.

Why is this even an opinion? I can see wanting to go from the country to the city for adventure, wanting to go from the city to the country to have zero distractions or wanting to stay with what’s familiar and comfortable to each respective recruit.

But this mind-bending stuff is for the weak.

      • “But this mind-bending stuff is for the weak.”

Was stuck in a waiting room the other day. The tv was droning with pundits on a sports talk show vehemently arguing non-issues.

“This is the beginning of the end of Tom Brady!”

Some have make careers out of it.

  16. Did we ever really figure out who for sure was calling the offense on that last game? As fun as it is to watch the air-raid style of ball I sure do like controlling the ball and ramming it down their throats with the run game.

  17. Others have lightly mentioned Helfrich as the Beavs OC — I don’t see it, but it does beg the question: are we satisfied that our OC(s) are right for the job?

Any chance that GA switches OC’s again this year? Did McGiven do enough to be promoted to the full-time OC? Keep the dual-OC arrangement again? Or, to BeaverBill’s question, who was calling the plays in the CW? Maybe they should get the job?

    • And to your point there were other games where we all felt they should have emphasized the run game more but it didn’t happen… who was calling those games? I lean towards who ever called the Oregon game should be the guy.

        • That’s scary, seeing how well the run game ended up working. I still worry the staff has no idea what they’re doing on offense.

          • The run game was going to work, period. Anyone who has watched more than one Nikegon game would know that running it straight at them… not passing, not running to the edges… running it straight at them will stomp them into dust. It’s just a matter of how quickly you want to break them and make them give up.

Riley had a chance to get Mack Brown fired a year before he finally was. But he failed because he just couldn’t believe his eyes when he watched tape. He just had to throw the ball.

        • There were a bunch of people grumbling about this very idea in the third quarter. Going all pass happy in the third had become a tiresome habit, and they all wanted to see the O-line start pushing their way down the field.

They knew what was going to happen once the rain and wind kicked up, and they were quite happy about it.

          • Being at the game I have to say you are very accurate with this description. When the Beavs started pushing down the field, everyone was saying, “is it raining/”. To me it seems like it was just a mist….but I do also have to say that I got fucking wet!

  18. Not good for Beavers fans. Helfrich was their Riley. The AD even gave him an absurd contract after the NC title game year. They just pulled the trigger much quicker than OSU. OSU had a decided coaching advantage over UO, but may not in the future.

  19. Play calling went how EVERYONE expected — run the ball down their throats — Heisenberg and McGiven would only be questioned should they have passed the ball. Wasn’t much room for them for growth (but lots of room for failure) go against the grain and surprise anybody given the weather, momentum of the game. I would like to see another 3-4 games with this scheme and players before changing it up. The Minnesota and Colorado State games will be telling — if we don’t get 30+ points then we need to look at new OC, etc.

    • Ya i think it will be more telling next season if we need a new oc or not. Its a lot harder to implement a new o then a new d. But i don’t think Andersen is one to be scared to make a change.

  20. Been lurking on the quack boards this afternoon and they are convinced it’s either Fleck, Rhule, or Schiano. I have a news flash for the quacks none of those 3 are even close to Chip. Feels like a panic hire is about to happen.

    • Didn’t Mullens say that they are going to fish deep waters? He/Phil want the Navy guy. He is probably the best of the group and I don’t doubt he could clean up their program, discipline discipline discipline. Still it wouldn’t be like they will be as good as they were when Chip was there, once in a lifetime coaching hire.

  21. McEwain saying he’s not interested, “in case you haven’t noticed, this is Florida, we’re playing for the SEC championship and MY GOD is that a ’10’ in front of those six zeroes? I love the northwest, always planned to get back there!”

  22. Cooks frustrated with his role: in NOLA:

    http://www.oregonlive.com/nfl/index.ssf/2016/11/brandin_cooks_frustrated_with_1.html#incart_river_index

I haven’t watched enough NFL and Saints to know if his frustration is justified. Based on the numbers in the article, it seems like he is targeted a fair amount. His frustration doesn’t quite seem warranted and doesn’t sound like his usual high character, but he IS used to being the #1 option in college.

I just think “Luck O’ the Beavs” because the guy goes to a team not far from it super bowl win, has an offense built for a player like him, a HOF QB, and they’re not good enough overall to get back to the super bowl right now. One of the best OSU Beaver Football WRs and athletes, one of the best character and effort guys. Hope they do better before the window closes on Brees.

Would enjoy seeing Cooks enjoy a super bowl win and meaningful, productive seasons. Don’t want him to go the Steven Jackson route, toiling productively on an ineffective team.

    • That article was in the context of a game where the Saints scored 49 points and 6 passing TDs, amassed over 500 passing yards, had 9 different receivers log at least one reception…and in which Cooks didn’t get a target. Forget a reception, he was not targeted.

Absolute knife in the heart for a fantasy player, and you know these guys are bombarded with hate when they disappoint the fantasy community. So that surely imposes some external pressure. Agree it’s unusual for a high-character guy like that to express frustration, but I’d be frustrated after that game.

Also, during that game rookie Michael Thomas supplanted Cooks for #1 on the team in targets, receptions, and yards (pretty sure he was already #1 in passing TDs). Cooks has morphed from a WR1 to a high-end but inconsistent WR2- both on his team and for fantasy. That’s a big deal for his upcoming and career earnings-defining second contract.

So while the game itself was a big deal, it’s also a culmination of a season-long trend phasing Cooks out and Thomas in.

      • … his upcoming and career earnings-defining second contract.

        ^^this^^

That, and he might have escalators built into his contract that pay him now, never mind a future contract. He is being paid a base to distribute the ball to others at his own expense. If that’s what he’s paid to do, fine. Opposing teams will still have to scheme for him because he’s still the best receiver on the team. But pay him #1 money (or guarantee #2 money for a long period) to be your Isaac Bruce, and he won’t care what you ask of him so long as it helps the team win.

If his merits are based on stats, then he should be paid with said stats in a game where everyone feasts. If his merit is based on being the steady presence who can draw the D so his QB can beat said D more easily, pay him for that… or see what you get when that decoy leaves for greener pastures.

      • Had to fact check myself and found a couple warts in my stats from memory- “only” 360 passing yards and 5 passing TDs in that game.

Thomas now leads the team in every category – targets, receptions, pass yards and pass TDs. In the last game he took the lead in targets, pass yards, and pass TDs. He was already the #1 in receptions.

FWIW he also is tied (with Ingram) for the team lead in fumbles lost.

    • Bohls is at Wyoming (the original coach that got it rolling) the current coach is his (bohls), mark helfrich. By that I mean hand picked successor. He’s still a good coach but not as good as Bohls. Bohls has wyoming at 8-4 and playing in the MWC championship with more unrated recruits than 2* and 3* guys.

      • Ha! The original coach who got it rolling… at NDSU.

If anyone out there was smart, they would go to Fargo and see if the person or people who have been hiring football coaches there for the last 50 years can come and advise them on their next coach.

        • Yes they have been good since the..what? The 60’s? BUT I’m talking modern era. Bohl has made them the Alabama of fcs……actually they are more dominant than Alabama. Sure they had big wins in the 80’s and 90’s but it wasn’t until Bohl showed up that they really turned it up.

          • It was well after Bohl showed up that he started turning it up. The program has always been strong. It just hinges on having a great QB… who can turn it up. He presided over NDSU’s worst two consecutive seasons since before Mudra. But he got better play out of the QB position, and then he won again.

I wonder if he would go back to NU in the next couple years. It would take some forgiveness on his part.

      • Funny story: I heard one of the first things Bohls did at Wyoming was see that they had 11 uniform variations and got rid of them all. Said they would have 2 uniform combinations and that is all. I can just imagine how that would fly at Oregon.

    • It’s better if the lower division coaches come up as coordinators to the D1 level.

Lance Leipold just went 2-10 in his second season at Buffalo.

      • I’d take Leipold as an OC any day. But I think your analogy holds true for the dregs of D1, where lower level coaches are usually placed. If given the keys to a nice new car, it’s likely a good coach from the lower levels can at least win more than he loses.

But I think you’re right. Even Chip had to prove his system worked before they demoted Bellotti.

  23. I hope Andersen and co. are recruiting Talanoa Hufanga (Crescent Valley) hard. He is right in our backyard and it would be a shame if the coaches weren’t going after him as much as they can.

        • They also had DG ahead of McM at QB.

I can’t imagine how you could look at their bodies of work from 2016 and make that decision.

      • Wallace was mention by Eggers the in the other article:

“Look for some of OSU’s redshirt group to contend for playing time next season. Coaches are especially high on cornerback Christian Wallace and linebackers Hamilcar Rashed, Kee Whetzel and Aaron Garcia, the latter who was ineligible this season but will be considered a grayshirt true freshman in 2017.”

  24. Not many seniors on that depth chart. If we can continue our upward trajectory, we have a bright future in the next few years.

    O-line is the key.

  25. Kevin Wilson fired at Indiana for being a mean coach. It will be interesting to see what comes out.
Guy can coach offense with the best of them.

  26. Am I remembering correctly that the Pac-12 writers picked the Beavs to finish 11th?

If that’s true who the heck is supposed to finish 12th? Oh wait….. it must be the Cougs. Can they possibly be that bad? The Cougs that is.

    Ugh.

  27. Very excited to see that Juliano Falaniko (American Samoa, USC commit) is coming to visit this weekend. He is good friends with Elu Aydon. My Samoan friend has been extremely high on this guy for months and says that Juliano is also a very high character guy as well.

        • I never heard 100% if the guy I suspected as a previous visitor ver actually visited. The 4* guy i had in mind did not, but the 3* guy i think did. Surprised it’s never been mentioned. Maybe somebody here with a blitz or sedge subscription would know if its been mentioned there?

This weekend would be somebody different. This stuff sometimes can be really sensitive, if a player is committed elsewhere but just wants to get a visit in without pissing off his current team.

      • Now that i think about it, Pututau could.be the “other” guy, I suppose. Think they like him at TE, but he’s also a mission guy, so even if we landed him, it wouldnt really count. We’ll just have to wait and see if any other names pop up.

  28. Max Browne is leaving USC, there are some snippets out there about the Beavs being a possiblity. GA recruited him for Wisconsin. USC has not put any restrictions on where he can go and he can play right away. QB overkill or go for it if there is a chance?

    • What have you seen regarding Oregon State? Just curious cause i haven’t seen anything.
If he stays in the Pac, think he’s more likely to go to Cal or WSU since both are losing senior QBs. And he’s from Washington so WSU would make sense.

Just don’t see us adding another scholarship QB at this point, unless DG is injured long term or Luton gets poached

      • I say that only because I have a felling the “senate” may not be impartial. Not that it isn’t a clear violation. I personally think it will go down a path that in the end is muddled by some SJW reasoning, and not truly get to the violation at hand. That’s just my thoughts, but I may be way off, we shall see.

        • Sorry, but free speech is a social justice issue no matter what side you take on any of the nuanced arguments out there. Anyone who uses groupthink terms and acronyms like SJW is being one themselves.

They will be partial. They will be partial toward free speech and freedom of the press, the University’s free press at that, at a public institution. They may think they’re some standalone entity with every right to restrict information in this way. They’re not. They exist wholly because of tax dollars at work, mine and yours. We will be repaid, most likely from tuition increases that stick it to their students. But we’re putting up millions on that good faith, and they better act accordingly.

          • It’s a constitutional right, there should be no argument or social justice about it. If someone in, let’s say Iran, wanted free speech then yes it would be a social justice issue.
What I’m talking about would be someone dismissing the author because he used his white privilege to go around the athletic dept and try to get a black player in trouble or bring up personal matters of said player. It’s not far from the truth, this type of thing is happening on tOSU campus right now. People in power are questioning the actions of a white police officer shooting a Somalian born student who was actively trying to kill students with a knife.
Now I’m not saying this will happen in this case, but I would be less than suprised if it came up.

          • Someone attempting to take away your rights without due process is also a social justice issue. The Constitution is a social contract. When authorities make the lines fuzzy or just plain take away rights, someone else has to speak up about it or accept that it can happen to them too. I think we should all stand up and speak about it because of that logic.

In this case the authority has overstepped its bounds, and they need to be held accountable. I’m just confused about all the white privilege and someone taking a life and how that even applies to this. The press has a right to ask questions. The players have a right to tell the press to go away. If one player decides he wants to talk, the press then has to ask for takes on any info from all sides before going to print. I’m sorry players and parents are complaining about this… I guess? The only reason it’s anything of a story is because information wasn’t available after previous events occurred, and discipline was not meted by the authority.

That last seems to be a recurring theme here in Eugene.

    • Funny stuff:

It is erroneous to portray the athletic communications staff as pulling any credentials for a story that is written.

True. It is erroneous. Why are you saying it in the first place? Straw man?

It was mentioned that the recourse could be the reduction of one credential for the Oregon State football game played in Corvallis.

      Ding! Ding! Ding!

That’s all that was reported, and you made it about your straw man in order to make this event relatively minor. It’s not relatively minor. Your department used coercion to limit free speech… or tried and got caught.

I also love how nobody does anything actionable in those statements. But someone does something positive in the final statement that defies Pintens’ previous statement.

He never truly threatened to reduce one credential.

      Derpy Ducks.

Can we get a new thread on something less boring?

    • If you scroll down, Jaynes has his usual take conflating mediocre Mike and NC contender and Heisman coach Helf.

It’s his logic in a nutshell.

I don’t care if Helf inherited his greatness. He was at least good enough to get out of the way and let them do their thing, which was to be the first second place in D1 one year. If NU poaches Riley after that kind of success, we would be more understanding of their motives and claims of a return to greatness. Right now, the coaching candidate with the best resume out there is…?
