  1. Great news. By my count, that is 2 4* wide outs. In one class! We had better get a QB that can get them the ball. Hopefully one of the guys on the team now is the one.

    • I wasn’t sure about Luton at first, but the more I watch the more I like. You have to think that these commits believe in him as well or they wouldn’t be coming here based on what they’ve seen from our previous QB shitshow.

  2. Just finished watching Calvin’s Jr year film. I wasn’t too impressed. Hopefully he isn’t another Lucas. Maybe his senior film is better? I couldn’t find Sr. film. He looks very small and not especially fast in this film.

      • Yeah I’m watching the film Jack just shared. It’s good. As you said, great change of direction and body control. Very shifty. But I don’t see a burner here. He looks more like the Quizz of WRs. He looks good, but without blazing speed I’m wondering how he got the 4-star tag. Even Quizz was a 3-star, from memory, and he put up State records for TX…

I honestly don’t see a huge difference in Bradford’s film vs Calvin’s film and wonder if we’re being biased by the star rating. I’d personally rank him a high 3-star because when a guy is that small and doesn’t have breakaway speed he could be anything from Quizz to Marable. Very hard to predict how an undersized player will handle the increased speed and physicality at the next level.

        • I hear what you’re saying. I remember seeing a picture of he and bolden together back when he visited corvallis, and Bolden was the same size.
Wait till you see Flemings, he’s even smaller.
They way I see it, if he were over rated, Alabama wouldn’t have bothered recruiting him.

        • He looked a lot faster to me in his junior film than his senior film.

Either way, I think we have the next Victor Bolden on our hands. There was a lot of running backwards in both film packages.

  3. I think this clinches the idea that Andersen is looking to move this team into more of an Air Raid style of offense. Especially since it doesn’t appear they are even trying to get a 2nd RB in this class after losing the Florida kid to Missouri.

With some rumors that they’ve been connected to some senior transfers; if they got anyone would that count towards the 25 you can bring in each year? Anyone know?

    • I do think GA is moving in the direction (Air Raid) but I think he largely wants to improve/replace our ineffective WR core. They pretty much did nothing last year.

Bolden was not that effective except for the few plays here and there (fly sweep, and couple of long balls). Villamin showed up for one game? (Arizona). Then Seth Collins was injured. Timmy Hernandez and Trevon Bradford had some success in the limited time they were in, but they’re not game changers. At the very least, Calvin, Hodgins push the current WR Core (Collins, Villamin, Timmy, Bradford) to improve or ride the pine.

Either way, I think the current staff is hitting a home run with these recruits. GA has me really believing that he’s here to stay AND can make it happen.

What a great day to be a beaver!

      • While I agree with that, to me it has to be his sales pitch since Calvin had moved from OSU not long ago. I think they are pitching a lot of passing to these kids.

    • Don’t get stuck on Air Raid. It’s an inefficient O whose innovators have mostly abandoned. Even Leach is beginning to concede the necessity for a run game.

Think more of a veer and shoot.

      • The Air Raid doesn’t mean you can’t have a running game. The system as designed should still run the ball 30-35% of the time. In practice it doesn’t seem to do that mostly due to the freedom to audible out of nearly every run call.

My preference is for more balance than that personally and I am not saying that I want to see an Air Raid offense; I am simply speculating that the Beavs are selling such an offense to these recruits right now.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we see an offense that throws the ball 60-65% of the time over the next few years based on what they seem to be recruiting. That is just my wild speculation.

        • I think in practice we may end up seeing something close to the K-Gun the bills ran in the early 90’s which still produced a hall of fame level running game.

  4. Here’s to hopes of a Holiday Bowl in the next 2 years. That is one bowl it really would be good to see OSU make soon. Firm up the confidence and then make a Rose Bowl run.

    • Supposed to be visiting Texas. Seems like a longshot that Texas would come in late for the poach. I was more worried about WSU snagging both Calvin and Flemings

  5. From Big Red Today….
He took his official visit to Oregon State about a month later, and he’ll be headed to Beaverton for his collegiate career.

GA really is changing things, but moving the school is a bit much.

  6. Here is last comment from Husker Board. They are figuring out Riley’s limitations and some willing to admit Oregon State has a better coach:

“Maybe the kid looks at N on the same level with Oregon St while being closer with a better coach.. N just isn’t coveted anymore to anyone but in-state kids maybe”

  7. My favorite part about Jamire’s commitment is seeing all the Nebby fans get sour as hell that they lost two 4 stars to us. Quite comical.

  8. From Corn Nation:
“They were talking all morning about how Riley is building this pipeline from Los Angeles to Lincoln, and a big piece of that was Jamire Calvin. And he goes to Oregon State, the team Riley left??”

    *snicker*

We need a Gary Andersen “deal with it” meme image

  9. But but but you can’t recruit to Corvallis! Airport! People look alike! Not enough shoe stores! arrghle blarghle *twitch spasm froth*

    • Imagine what the ducks are going to do to them. They whooped the leg humpers by 22 the other night. With the matador D the Beavs play I’ll be shocked if the ducks don’t hang a hundred on them and win by 40

    • Thompson got physically beaten up – a couple of pokes in the eye and it looked as if he might have re-injured his foot. With all the good news about football recruiting and, drum roll . . . Beavs gymnastics gets a big win . . . I can’t see the outlook for men’s basketball. I fear it will be difficult for this program to recover.

        • It was a nice plus. We might have a good to great team this year.

Meets at Gill are actually a really fun event when we’re winning. And when we’re not, the competition is really good. So it’s a win-win.

  10. These are the type of recruiting battles we need to win to build depth. You can complain about his size, I would take five James Rodgers or Brandin Cooks on the field every single play.

  11. It’s amazing how far our program has come in just two years from the Riley malaise. Andersen is showing it’s about how you sell a place, not about making excuses for why you can’t recruit there.

Meanwhile, Riley is turning Lincoln into the next place that needs an airport.

  12. Beavers are multiple spots ahead of Oregon now and have moved up to #35 in the Rivals rankings with the addition of Calvin. Trajon Cotton would get OSU perhaps breaking into the Top 30.

  13. Man. That Husker board. I’m sort of flattered some of them think we have the resources to pay a kid to come here!

Can’t call anywhere a shithole when you live in Nebraska. Maybe Kansas? Heh

      • I think Nebraska (other than its football program) has a lot going for it: great river towns like Nebraska City and Omaha, and a lot of cool Oregon Trail monuments, like Courthouse Rock and Scott’s Bluff. If you are a rail fan it’s probably the best state in the country. Lots of remnant sections of the old Lincoln Highway too

        • Yes, it does have a handful of geologic formations that are cool. And every one of them is a monument or rec area. And yes, they have an air traffic control tower for a rail museum and an archway over the freeway for another.

I like the Niobrara River and the northern part of the state. Every part of the state has a story about multiple hidden treasures. And it is a testament to the people there that they wanted a national forest… so they planted one. Omaha has a great zoo. The crane migration in the spring is something everyone should see at least once.

You can find good things in every state if you just look for them.

          • Yep. I spent some time there and liked it a lot. But, I like the outdoors. Omaha is pretty cool.
It’s stupid to bash States. They’re all good (except Kansas and Ohio).

  14. So he MAY be overrated, but the good news for the program is the unusual exposure.

Even if he is overrated, the strength of this WR class as a unit may help offset individual weaknesses.

The only risk I see in bringing in a cohort of friends is if it doesn’t work out for one, and one ore more leaves, but you can’t predict that, or let that stop the program from recruiting the kids they identify.

This is nice exposure for the program, there’s an above average WR cohort coming in, and a new, motivated WR coach with an impressive resume. I like it.

  15. Whether he ends up being worth the star rating or not, it’s a huge win for the notoriety of our program on the recruiting trail. Great job GA and Co.

  16. Don’t know about you guys, but I expected 2 wins vs Washington State, and surprised we weren’t more competitive vs a Roman team. I mean seriously what the hell?

  17. Another gem from Corn Nation:

“No one is happy about today. Well, no one except other teams. Gary Andersen is probably taking his whole staff to In n’ Out after this coup. There is really no other way to say it, this was our staff taking a big swing, and they whiffed. I certainly didn’t expect us to get all of the people on our board, at least some of them. Calvin, Holmes, and Farell were the best shots. We missed on all three. Great job, Coach.”

I don’t think GA rolls In ‘N Out. I wonder where the celebration spot is. Anyone know?

And the narratives shift from Corvallis to Lincoln:

“Under Bo we wouldn’t be having this discussions because he wouldn’t have gone after most of these recruits –

Or Mike Riley going after the best available recruits and getting the door slammed in our faces –

I’m beginning to think Nick Saban wouldn’t be able to recruit to Nebraska well either – who knows?”

    Seeping in already #TPB

I’ll ignore the basketball team for now.

    • I really think Cal has some serious potential. Great school in a major market within the largest state. Seems like they should have more success than they’ve had over the years. But like UCLA they just don’t seem to make the investment in sports (UCLA basketball being the exception) that some schools make. I think many in the Cal system actually look down on athletics (probably why UC-Davis doesn’t even see success at the FCS level despite being a school with the resources to be successful at FBS if it wanted).

Would be interesting (and likely bad for the rest of the North) if Berkley decides to get serious about college football.

      • Hard for me to imagine Chip staying in California after his experience with the niners.

As for Cals potential, you’ve made a good case. However, being Berkeley, they have other priorities. OTOH, they did support (in a big way) retaining their baseball program back in 2011.

      • What else can they do? Facilities you mean?
They always land great recruiting classes.

Not sure Chip is a difference maker at this point. Maybe, but sometimes the league catches up to a guy or his message wears thin. Chip will be pretty predictable this time around. I’d be more worried about Chip at Oregon than at Cal. Mainly because there would be so much buzz around his return they could ride that wave.

I wonder how bad Oregon is regretting hiring Taggert right about now.

        • Not recently, Cal’s recruiting has been in the 30’s or 40’s under Dykes in recent years. But even with strong recruiting classes you need someone that can bring a culture together (and to be truly dominate I think you have to capture the student body and draw them in). I just don’t think the culture at either Cal or UCLA has ever been there. They need someone that can fill that stadium and put them on the radar in SF. Chip may be that guy if they are willing to spend the money to get him.

Chip was always predictable, I actually see that as his strength. At Oregon you always knew what he was gonna do but they ran it to near perfection at times and never out thought themselves. Even when he’d do something “unpredictable” like a fake punt if you were paying attention you knew it was coming.

I do agree that messages can run thin but this will be a new group of people getting that message.

          • I think part of that is California culture. The people are not intense. The colleges all recruit themselves for the most part just due to the weather and girls.

I’m not a Pete Carroll fan, but he’s intense/East Coast guy, and I don’t think it’s coincidence he had the best USC teams of late. Even Chip, East Coast/intense guy. If these schools were smart they’d let the schools continue to recruit themselves and then get an East Coast/intense coach. Laid back coaches can’t win big on the West Coast — too much of that already built in. It’s a main reason I hated Riley.

          • Which is why I said /intense. i.e. East coast or intense.

It would be stupid to say there aren’t any intense people on the West Coast. In general, there aren’t. An intense coach isn’t necessarily a good coach, either. But, I’m talking specifically about what’s missing from all the Cal schools. It’s intensity. We see what that culture change from laid back to intense is doing for OSU. We saw what it did when Chip came into Oregon. These places are all laid back, so to have a coach like that is like a water sign dating a water sign. Wet blanket on a wet blanket.

Sonny Dykes was a crappy coach, btw. It’s the main reason Cal stunk. Tedford wasn’t great, but he was better. Tedford was basically their Riley. Cal needs an intense coach to counter their natural malaise. Chip fits. It would be interesting to see.

  18. MBB (I know) but I’m curious why Kone isn’t getting more minutes. His conditioning should be there by now. Tanner Sanders got more minutes in the UW game. Might as we get him in there for 20-25 minutes/game and get him some experience. We’re really undersized with Dahlen starting.

I hope WBB can pull the upset today at Stanford. Have they ever won at Maples? Maybe this will be the day.

    • Kone doesn’t have very good touch. May get a few rebounds but is not a good shooter. Manuel has much more touch. If you can’t make enough shots you are just wasting possessions and opening up easier scoring opportunities the other way for the opposition.

  19. OT: WBB
5pm today on PAC12; toughest test yet for the gals. Stanford is ranked #10 and the Beavs go in with an 0-29 record at Maples.
Syd scored just 3 pts in the first half vs Cal, look for more production today.
Cannot afford to have anyone have an off night for this one.

Speaking of OT, baseball is only 40 days away!

  20. Recruiting question for NiceBeaver or someone who knows:

We are targeting a full class of 25, right? Seems like that’s what I’ve heard, and it makes sense. Where is the rest of the volume coming from? We’re only at 18 commits right now. I know we’re in the running for a few top guys (Green, Cotton, Moore, Pili) but I’m sure we don’t land them all. Am I missing something? Does someone have a list of top targets?

    • I would guess they’re open to going over 25 if the right guys want to commit. They have a little flexibility as Bowcut is a mission guy and won’t count against the 25, and (i think) Evans or Hodgins or Taylor could be classified as 2016 class if needed to make space.
Still think they take one or more juco O-linemen and another RB (probably one you havent hears connected to osu yet)
Also, a couple of corners/safeties via JC or highschool.
After that, Pili and Green are guys I would be hopeful for, but dont feel great about. Cotton i think is doubtful. Moore I’m still feeling good about. He seems to really be following OSU recruiting news closely.
Also think we are looking at some Cal recruits with their news today. Wouldnt be surprised to see some new 2017 offers go out by next weekend.

  21. If Roberson commits, that’s 8 WRs in this class. That’s insane.
    1) Aren’t any of these guys concerned about competition for PT?
    2) Assuming this means we have no faith in the existing WR corps?

    • Thinking on the same line of thought — we need guys to return kickoffs, punts, and convert to defense if necessary. GA collecting the talent and filling the roles. Nice to have depth too.

  22. I think kaleb hayes is going to be a db. Wouldn’t be surprised to see more be converted. But i trust ga he has been really meticulous with numbers at positions and in classes. Maybe roberson is too late to the party?

    • So true, however the game vs Cal showed improvement in the TO area.
Today, Syd finally gets going with 3.5 left in the first half, her 7 pts is, indeed, better than the 3 she had at the half vs Cal. Lets see if the lid is now off for her.
Fun to watch Gulich and compare to Ruth last year; two very different players and both can contribute.

      • I can’t see him getting much time with all the new talent coming in, unless he gets things figured out. Dude was a nonfactor last year other than getting a Minny player ejected for targeting.

    • Maybe the new WR coach can change things up and get more out of him. Maybe the increased competition will inspire him rather than intimidate him.

It’s so great this staff saw a weakness and went out and addressed it so strategically and successfully in recruiting. Whether or not these guys pan out remains to be seen of course, but the likes of Villamin can compete or move on, and the staff has players that appear to be upgrades over the current WR unit.

      • NP. It’s amazing. You can watch the PAC regional channels 24/7.

I don’t think many people know about the site. Hopefully people donate to help him out b/c that electric bill can’t be cheap. I have no idea on the legality of that etc.

        • Thank you for the plug “angry”. A lot of folks know about it. But the heavy hitters are the Arizona Wildcats and the Oregon Ducks. I’ve made respective “Division” pages now to help organize the 60 feeds from PAC-12.

          PAC-12 North: http://i4atv.us/p12north
          PAC-12 South: http://i4atv.us/p12south

          Breakdown:

          7 x TV Broadcast
51 x combined Digital (school hosted live streams)
          1 x PAC-12 Press Conference
          1 x PAC-12+

It’s taken quite some time to gather it up. I’ve even created modified playlists based on theirs. So if you’ve ever used those from xrxs.net, I’ve taken the time to go beyond that, even setting up for audio only, should you be on a compatible device, and want to listen only, using less of your data plan, if you don’t have unlimited or not on a decent WifI connection.

I’ve made quite the investment compared to the return. When possible for me, I check in to my chat, and will assist to help anyone get the best possible viewing experience possible. As there will always be so many variables, what works for me, won’t always work for anyone else.

          • Appears there’s a limit, as the end of my reply was cut off. Basically:

I’ve been at it since September 2012, after “PAC-12 Networks” went on-air in August 2012. http://i4atv.us/about

Again, it “has” taken me quite some time to get it set up, even creating modified playlists that had been popular with xrxs.net, but expanding on that, as seen on each of the 7 individual TV Broadcasts.

Please share away. Yes donations are a bonus and greatly appreciated to keep it running, but in the long run, I’d love to make “Global Gizmo” a business to where I can properly share other networks that are common for games, without the need to re-stream them. I know there will be a lot of legal stairs to climb to get there. So if anyone knows of someone who’d like to help on that regards, please share. I currently live paycheck-to-paycheck, so I don’t have the funds behind me to properly pay for legal support. Thank you. Go Beavs (and Ducks).

          • Whiskey Soaked Napkins… it depends on the video player and the device. But the most common hiccup is the 288p (564kbps) feed within PAC-12’s master playlists for the TV Broadcast feeds for auto-bitrate adjustments.

For THEOplayer on my site, that is why I intend, or intended on some pages in process of being changed, to just have the “Mobile Devices” playlist, which is just 144p (282kbps) and 360p (1164kbps). The 288p feed works fine by itself, but just not as intended in the master playlist in THEOplayer. Other video players, and devices, quite possible. I can’t explain why it is happening, just that it does.

If you happen to use VLC media player or a program like it, then it may work just fine for you.

Hope this helps answer the question.

          • Wow, how’d you know I commented here?

Anyway, what kind of loss are you running at? It’s a great site. You’ve been running at a loss for 5 years providing that service to people? Has Comcast contacted you, etc? I’d be curious to hear about the legal side of it as well.

          • Gotta buzzkill here, but that’s ripping off content that takes people serious money to create. Not cool. I respect that you’re probably not doing it for money, but it still doesn’t sit right with me, especially as a PAC 12 Network subscriber. I feel like by playing by the rules, paying money to schools, content creators, and providers, I’m subsidizing freeloaders.

          • Angry….. It’s called http://tracemyip.org as my hit counter. I saw the reference and decided to chime in. As for actual value, couldn’t say, but I’d give a rough estimate of 99% me to incoming of about 1% if I was to even think of the overall costs of running the site in its various formats and locations since Sept 2012.

As for Comcast, no. They’re just my Internet provider, business class. PAC-12 I did get a letter because I was reported through a volleyball forum, but I then either called them up, or emailed, don’t remember at the moment, stating I wouldn’t stream there anymore (previous – previous website) leaving it open as I didn’t state “ever”, and moved the site. I also removed my mailing address from the contact-me and about pages.

Scotty…. I hear the “buzz kill” as it’s been brought out now and again when talking about this site. So that’s why I’d like to make it a ‘business’ from being just a hobby because of it’s popularity. It’s there for those that have no other option. As for donation option and the current ‘membership fees’ it’s only to help support my time and effort of keeping up the site until the proper alignment of help comes along to make it such. If you don’t want to visit the site, then you don’t have to.

          • Scotty…. And yes, it’s true, I have not been in it for the money, as I’m a fan of the fans. However, being able to break even now and again would a bonus, versus being constantly in the red.

I am also going to finally check in with someone I was directed to last year in my chat, as a start to that ‘alignment’.

          • I can’t speak for everyone, but I cancelled cable in 2010 and will never buy it again. If there were no streaming, I’d go to my gym (has cable) and watch the games there, or use my family’s Comcast to stream it, so nobody is losing business or revenue. I’ll never again buy Comcast cable in my lifetime. It was 100 channels of absolute shit for quite a high price, only to get Beaver games, and back in 2010 (before the Pac) they couldn’t even deliver me all the Beav games (they’d show East coast or USC games half the time). They have the worst customer service I’ve ever dealt with…no change I use them.

I hear what you’re saying, though. I actually deal with it in my own work. If the person would have purchased it were it not streaming, I think in those cases it’s a loss to society and your argument is totally valid.

I’m not necessarily endorsing streaming (and usually I remove links to those sites). I posted the link more out of amazement that someone created that. It’s a highly advanced setup without ads, etc. It’s pretty amazing. I hope the guy can stay solvent somehow, but I know from experience that people expect free and don’t want to pay or even donate. Scotty did ;) So thanks, buddy.

          • So Gizmo, did you try to go the Kodi route? I use Kodi and there were a couple streams that I found last year that had all of the Pac12 feeds but they shit the bed in the middle of the season so I went with Sling and I’ve been happy. $25 worth for sure.

          • Mini debate time:

“If the person would have purchased it were it not streaming, I think in those cases it’s a loss to society and your argument is totally valid.”

I used to buy into that argument more (same with software piracy), but it’s a slippery hypothetical. It’s very easy to tell yourself you wouldn’t have purchased something to rationalize free streaming/pirating/etc, but can you really know that’s true? For example, going to the sports bar, gym, or wherever else can get inconvenient after a while. Who’s to say that inconvenience wouldn’t eventually be worth the subscription rate?

It’s also saying “I don’t think using something is worth the price, so I’m just going to use it for free since I can get away with it.” That’s ridiculous from an ethical standpoint, but millions of people do it.

In any case, I don’t generally get riled up about it these days. The internet world has made everything complicated and nuts, especially with regards to revenue and IP, and there are bigger things to worry about. I’ll never claim to be a perfect saint, anyway.

Btw, for people looking for regular TV solutions, ask your provider about individual channel or a la carte deals. No need to buy a $200 package, but they won’t tell you that unless you ask.

I’ll support AB anytime, angry – I spend way too much time here, and it keeps me sane :)

            (buzzkill scotty out)

          • Under no circumstance would I use Comcast. I know it for sure; no rationalization required. I’d listen to Mike Parker radio and refresh the ESPN box score before subscribing to Comcast. But, I bet some people would buy it were there not streams, and those people do cause a loss. It’s up to companies to figure out how to monetize in an era of streaming. For example, Twitter bought the NFL rights and stream Thursday games for free. They then charge the advertisers, and can deliver relevant ads given all the data they have. There’s now no reason for anyone to stream Thursday games. This looks like genius compared to Comcast, who are selling hundreds of needless channels and lobbying government to regulate the internet. Comcast is a very dated company trying to use lobbies, government, and force rather than innovating. They have also censored websites they didn’t agree with. Another example from the software side: Adobe put their software in the cloud and makes people pay subscriptions, etc. There are ways to deal with piracy that aren’t heavy-handed, if a company is innovative. Comcast is very poor company. They were granted a monopoly and are doing what one would expect in that situation — no innovation and instead are pandering for more enforcement of their monopoly.

            Ps. How are the ladies??

          • WFO…. As for a plugin for KODI, I haven’t taken the time to figure that one out yet. It would be nice to do so.

As for PAC-12 crapping out mid season for football in 2016, that’s because they decided to change up the TV Broadcast sources. I was one of the first to do the R&D to get it going within a few days, but then others started popping up with the corrected links, including xrxs.net, the first to my knowledge to pull those feeds a few years ago. Naturally, I presume it’s because one, they were on servers that needed to be upgraded, and two, all the use from everyone that had previously shared the old server sources. I have a Channel Pear account that I listed those sources, prior to the change up; however, when I went in to change the links behind the scenes, to my surprise, it was already done! My guess is one of the admins, as no other general user should be able to change those.

    • That is a colossal monkey for the program to finally get off their back. Had they made their FT’s at the end of regulation and the 1st OT it never would have gone as far as it did. They also made it harder on themselves than it should have been with 20+ turnovers

      • I only saw the OTs, but it was good stuff.
Some nights teams miss FTs. As long as it’s not a nightly problem it’s normal.
        15-1. Go Beavs

  23. Finally! Ladies defeat Stanford at Maples for the first time ever. 72-69 final in 2 OT.

    Way to go gals!

    All alone in 1st place

  24. Is it just me or would a little more money for Scott Rueck and a little less for Scott Barnes make sense?

    Way to go lady Beavs!

  25. The ReBuild continues.

Need to improve Free Throws and turnovers. If they can get better in those two areas the sky is the limit for this team.

    1st place!

    • Stats I see show FT 11/14=78.6%, so if that is correct they actually shot reasonably well. Certainly much better than the 3 of 8 performance vs Cal.

But, look at steals, Tree pick the Beavs 17 times! Combine that with 22 TO’s and there is lots of room to improve.

Overall though, you gotta love the heart from these gals. Rueck has built such a team first culture.

BTW, who was it that said to watch for more production from Syd today?……..pats self on back

      • For the game yes 78% is a good percentage and an improvement. Gabby has a season avg of 47% for a starter thats very bad.

Tonight their three misses were down the stretch, one by Wiese at the 4 minute mark, and one by Brown at :12 mark that would have put the game away. Gabby went 1 for 2 in the 1st OT that could have iced the game. But they are showing improvement.

What I am impressed about is their Rebounding on both ends, and their defense of course. They fight over screens and have a great recognition on how to double without fouling. They run multiple defenses, I saw 1-1-3, 2-3 zones, matchups, and man-to-man. They help well and understand the concept. High IQ. Very different from the men.

        • High IQ for sure, good point.

Gabby is a favorite because of her D, FT’s and shots from the field have never been reliable. Seems to me she is running the offense much more though now that Jamie is gone. And doing a pretty good job of it.

One of the most impressive things about the program, for me, is the management of the underclasswomen and the non-starters in general. So important in bridging the loss of key players to graduation.

While Gulich sometimes cannot find the handle, she is better than Ruth in that area; also seems so much more active offensively than Ruth was. Brown seems to be making up for some of the drop off in blocks which was Ruth’s strong suit.

It keeps coming down to the culture which Rueck nurtures, and that high IQ!

    • Glad I DVR’d it! Man, if you told me a few years ago that I’d be recording women’s basketball on TV, I’d have looked at you like O_o

      The power of Lady Beavers!

…uhhhhh…. you know what I mean

  26. Great QB and WR’s coming in and we have decent RB’s. Just hope our O-line will be up to par. Wish we can land another monster for the o-lone.

  27. I think GA thinks we’re playing a 7 on 7 tournament with the amount of WRs coming in.

But really, my guess is that some guys will gray shirt to even things out.

  28. I see Vince Guinta just started following Bruce Judson (and vice versa). Pretty interesting.

He’s a South Florida verbal, he officially visited Minnesota already with visits planned for Wazzu, the yucks and Kentucky this month. I wonder what’s up with that, it seems like Taggart would be able to flip him with ease but he must not be 100% convinced with those visits planned.

Hopefully we can get in on him but I watched his tape, he’s got an arm like a dickhead – I hate him as a QB at 5’9″ 205lbs but he is speedy, I’m sure he’d be a decent weapon somewhere.

  29. Jon Warren to replace Jay Reese for the early season baseball games while Parker tends to the hoops team playing out the string.

          • I coach/teach in Bend; I know him and his daughter, and know why he lost a food truck business in Bend, along with personally knowing several accusers….the allegations are pretty much common knowledge around Bend so I’m pretty comfortable.

          • Facebook. Real. Factual. News. If there isn’t a police report corroborating her story, it’s a he said, she said. You weren’t there. Yes it is entirely possible he is a scumbag. It’s also possible she’s a lying twunt. I mean I’ve never heard of a vindictive, conniving 17 year old female.

            Facts. Not conjecture.

That said does he still have a sports radio show in Bend?

          • Honestly, don’t care what you guys believe, there have been other girls, I used to consider the guy a friend, turned out to be a total piece of shit scumbag but I guess it’s easier to just believe I’m pulling shit out of my ass….to each their own….

And people wonder why girls don’t come forward….this thread is exhibit A

          • Once again, were you there? Facts not conjecture.

I loved the comments from the internet criminal law experts in that thread you linked. Social media is a joke. Everything you read on the internet must be true.

There’s 3 sides to every story. You should go read a classic. It’s called the little boy who cried wolf.

I never stated you were full of shit. It’s possible. It’s also possible he’s a scumbag. It’s also possible she’s full of shit. But without facts, well what do we have?

“And people wonder why girls don’t come forward….this thread is exhibit A”

That’s really a stretch. Because no man has ever been falsely accused of something by a vindictive female. I’d rather leave that to the experts such as police and district attorney’s offices after an investigation than internet social justice warriors.

But continue with your high and mighty bullshit….

Many years ago I worked with a guy who was falsely accused of trying to kidnap a teenage girl near Lebanon high school. It was a he said, she said. He was arrested and spent tens of thousands of dollars fighting it in court the next two years. She eventually admitted she made the entire story up. What recourse did he get? Not a fucking thing.

I ALSO was once falsely accused by a female (nothing sexual). He said, she said. It also took me 2 years and 10 thousand dollars fighting it before charges were dropped. Believe it or not, that shit happens to innocent people every day no matter what or who you choose to believe.

          • A) not a Penn State fan, you guys should ow to read….

            B) I’m done with this, believe what you guys want, the guy is scum, his own daughter won’t let him near her or her daughter, he is no longer welcome in the bar he used to hang out at (same bar as me), this isn’t conjecture, this is a piece of shit that simply hasn’t been taken off the streets.

But sure, just one girl which is why he closed the food court, went on his own rant after this was reported, and disappeared for 2 months….I know the guy….he’s scum….that is all there is to it…

          • You better have some facts to be putting something like that onto someone.

Yes… because that’s precisely what Jay Reese had when he went after Nate Becksted.

          • You think what you’re posting is facts when in fact it’s libel. Ambulance chasers love defamation lawsuits. Now with that said, why has no one gone to the state about this guy? Sexual harassment reports can be investigated without a police report. It just seems weird that no one has gone after the guy if in fact he’s done this more than once. And I checked the Taco Shop against the state sexual harassment investigation web site and there is nothing there. I’m not calling bullshit by the way I’m just skeptical about a facebook post being honest.

          • Here’s where her “cute little story” lost all credibility with me……when she wrote that he showed her pictures of his dick. Interesting. Showing a pic of your junk to an underage female is in fact a crime and would be investigated as such. The police take that shit seriously and wouldn’t say there’s “nothing they can do”.

            Facts

          • Okay, again, she’s not the only girl….sorry I don’t have rolls of evidence at the ready for you guys on a blog….my original comment was he’s not a good guy because he’s not…
And if you read the comments in the thread you will find plenty of other girls mention their bad experiences with this guy, including his own daughter, this post spread like wildfire last summer, not only did he not sue anyone but the owner of the place he had the truck booted him and virtually no one in this town has anything to do with the guy anymore.

I’d already known a girl he basically stalked prior to this…just because their isn’t a crime or a crime can’t be proven doesn’t mean he’s not a piece of shit. Pretty much every girl I know that has dealt with him on a regular basis has a story about how creepy he is.

I feel pretty safe in my knowledge of how big of a creep this guy is and honesty I wouldn’t be shocked if this stuff is part of why he was replaced at OSU

          • You think what you’re posting is facts when in fact it’s libel.

Okay… you can call hearsay what it is. But you can’t strawman hearsay as a presentation of fact and then give a summary judgment of said hearsay as libel or even defamation, things that require a conviction in order to factually exist.

And just because the hearsay is consistently bad and by a large sample of mostly credible sources doesn’t mean one or more of those sources are not lying. Once he becomes low hanging fruit, those seeking attention can pick him.

          • I just wanna be clear, my knowledge/opinion is NOT based on that Facebook post, id already had nothing g to do with the guy for months by the time that came out, someone implied I was making stuff up so I posted that post to show its not just me….

I know the guy, I know his family, I know who he is….that is where my personal bias comes from. I’d seen all the evidence I needed to see prior to this Facebook post.

          • Gross.
My best friend turned out to be a creepy stalker (watch the movie “Hard Candy” on Netflix for an idea of the type. i.e. fake photographer/movie director hack just to see girls naked). Very gross. Had to ditch him, which was tough since we had been friends for 20+ years.

    • Thanks for the heads up, wannabeav, was this mentioned on JoeBeav?

Interesting input from Youngorst, I’d never heard about Reese as a person one way or the other. As a broadcaster I was satisfied with his work. He seemed to have a good background for the job and I cut him slack because of my feeling that it is a tall order to be a “one man show”. No sidekick, no producer, and no help from Learfield.

So now it will be Jon Warren? It’ll take some serious character building effort on my part to keep an open mind here. His constant explanations of the technical glitches on the JoeBeav show, along with stories from his Jr.High days are so irritating!

Jim Wilson is such a great color man when Parker is doing the regular season, too bad he isn’t an option for spring ball. Of course he might not do as well in a primary play-by-play role.

Feb 17 vs Duke; can’t get here soon enough!

  30. Tinkle needs to get committment of 4* Harry Froling tomorrow. Team needs some good news and Tinkle needs to keep showing he is serious about contending in the Pac-12 since this season won’t be pretty.

Anyone have a guage on Trajon Cotton for football? He is guy I most would like signed of those we are in the hunt for. He is supposedly looking at OSU, Colorado and others.

I see Colorado moving down a couple places in South next year while Oregon State moves up. Over the next 4 years I think Oregon State will clearly be the team rising into a position to have its shot at a Rose Bowl. Buffs blew their opportunity and it won’t be easy for them to have the same chance.

Think Cal won’t get Kelly and be left with Justin Wilcox. Defense will mildly improve but they won’t be much of a threat.

    • Why is Cotton your #1 guy?

I still dont like our chances with him, but also dont put him at the top of my want list. He might crack my top 10 but not top 5

        • Realistically, I like
George Moore, Brandon Pili, Daniel Green and one of the many JC corners we’ve beem after (take your pick)
I would maybe put Cotton at 4 if I though we had a good shot at him. Those 2 guys we offered today look solid too.
Cody Shear needs to be up there I think still. Maybe one more JC O-lineman. Kamilo Tongamoa would be nice but probably unlikely at this point.

          • The biggest need is 2 more (maybe more) OL in this class in my opinion. I am not sure we can get the 2 we need out of the 3 names mentioned, unless Pili is willing to come as a OL (I would prefer he comes as DL-just trying to figure out OL numbers). 2 names that I was optimistic about in the past were Onesimus Lutu-Clarke and Mo Unutoa. Anyone know if they are possibilities. There has been no information on them recently.

  31. I like our chances of getting pili. I would like to see the class rounded out with pili moore that new rb target and a corner and safety would be ideal. Wouldn’t mind having green either. The nice thing about having such a full class is they can be more choosy who they take. That bruce kid is interesting too. I dont think we can afford to turn down talent like that.

  32. Nice to see allen shut down his recruitment i really like him and i was a bit afraid of losing him with all these wr they’re getting. U think roberson is oit of the picture now nicebeav?

  33. Nothing like Alabama getting beat in the last few seconds to make you have pleasant dreams at night. Hahaha suck it Saban, maybe they should have kept Kiffin around a little longer.

  34. Nice to see ‘Bama fall. I ghought clemson would have benefited from taking snaps under center at times with a RB in the game. Hope Beavs’ updated offense next year features the same….

    • Their 31 year-old OC.

Nothing like firing your HC late in the recruiting and hiring cycles to hire someone else off your own staff.

  35. The Salavea news is not good for us. Already noticing a big drop off in the number of Polynesian players we are recruiting and getting to commit, which is personally disapointing.

    • Ya I miss the days where we’d get guys from fuck knows what island and then never see him again after his mission. Take me back :'(

      • Oh yeah, you guys are right! Polys don’t matter and we shouldn’t worry about recruiting them… we should probably just tell Aydon, Hungalu, Togiai, Lauina, Lavaka, Napolean, Vakameilalo, Savea and the other 10 or so Polys on our team that we don’t need or care about Polys so they can just go somewhere else. You need me to list the Poly alums who have been cornerstones of our success over the years as well? Get real and promtly remove your heads from your asses! There are always going to be misses in recruiting and they aren’t all Polys. A strong Poly pipeline and culture is extremely important to our long term success.

      • I believe the Poly culture adds a lot of substance and family fewlmtona program. This is both my observation of the OSU program over the years and my personal experience playing with many Polys in college.

I can appreciate the jokes above, just not used to fellow Beaver fans sniping at other Beavs, but whatever floats your boat.

  36. Clune sets down with Gina, some good stuff-even channels his inner Pat Casey:

“Everyone thinks we make these really hard decisions on who’s first string and who’s second string. It’s really not (hard, because) the kids make these decisions. They show us exactly who should be starting and who shouldn’t be starting and what we can count on and what we cannot.”

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2017/01/kevin_clune_oregon_state_defen.html#incart_river_index

  37. I’m sure all of you saw this

Johnny Hekker – pro bowl and 1st team all pro.
Now a 3x pro bowler and 2x 1st team all pro. 1x 2nd team all pro.

  38. So Emony Robinson is now on campus as a LB? I thought he was out of the picture- didn’t realize he was a greyshirt. Also, strange that they moved him to LB given the depth there and the need for DBs.

  39. The recruiting sites all listed him as a DB. We may have recruited him as a LB but I never saw that published anywhere. And I don’t think OSU said anything about him until now due to the eligibility issues.

This is the first time I’ve seen the designation. Maybe I just missed it, or maybe you just knew all along from your sources?

  40. It’s been coming up on the Joe Beaver Show that Tara Vanderveer, the Furd WBB coach, especially hates losing to Oregon State. 3:1 she has a competitive schoolgirl crush on Scott Rueck <3

Either that or she's been reading too much Schnell and is pissed that she can't beat a school that doesn't have an airport

    • Hard to believe, but maybe Rueck reminds her of an older brother?

Hey, scotty, I’ve been missing the JoeBeav Show lately. Is Jon Warren pretty jacked up about the spring baseball gig??

      • Not sure, didn’t listen today yet. I’ve been catching the podcasts, but I don’t remember hearing much about baseball.

I wonder how much it bothers a women’s basketball Hall of Famer like Vanderveer that the most successful coach in the women’s game is a man, Geno Auriemma. Closer to home, she worked hard to build her Stanford powerhouse PAC queendom, and then in comes a short dude that starts ripping titles from her. I know that’d twist my nipples.

          • And the negative recruiting derived from talking about just that, what some coaches “might” do in the privacy of their homes and how that means “your” daughters will most certainly be indoctrinated into that “maybe chosen” lifestyle, might lead some coaches not to like some other coaches.

Or maybe it’s the short man thing.

  41. Anybody else notice Scout had that Florida Athlete who was formerly with Ohio St, Bruce Judson, listed as a visitor this weekend, but has since pulled it off their site?

Wonder if they weren’t supposed to post it? Or if Judson changed his mind

      • I would say someone cares if he’s getting financial backing. And as long as the business structure doesn’t involve management techniques like those of Donald Trump or Vince McMahon, it may prove to be not a joke, maybe even profitable… which would make a lot more people care, at least financially.

A simple method for gaining exposure would be to run their season concurrent with the college hoops season… or from December through March. This would allow them to take advantage of the overexposure college football enjoys during that time to operate in relative anonymity when dealing with administrative and personnel decisions. Facilities will come open for rents as NCAA teams end their use of stadiums which suck maintenance costs from schools if they remain unused. Practice facilities would be a breeze to construct in terms of cheap land acquisition and building satellites.

Then it gains some popularity during the bowl season when most college fans have compartmentalized their team’s season and are looking forward to maybe this or that bowl game here or there. It gains further popularity as the NCAA completes its season and the NFL reduces its participation of fans to watching games lesser by half until the Super Bowl. And then it’s the only football to watch for two months until it wraps up its form of a championship.

It can then bond seamlessly with the NFL draft in late April. This would give credence to its mandate to serve as a vehicle for kids who can play football but can’t or don’t want to take tests to advance at least their opportunities to make a career out of something they can or want to do. It also allows some of those kids who are able to make some money for their families instead of relying on a bunch of roommates and potentially bad slumlords to live on the cheap and send money home from all the cash that can be saved from not spending institutional allotments.

Hell, I would make it a standing administrative rule for all owners to allot a one-time household moving expense for each of their signees who are initial hires. That little bonus could entice a lot of kids who feel they need the mechanisms used by college players just to keep their families afloat. I would also offer a housing allowance and construct some form of home ec education for my own peace of mind as an employer. But those kind of investments are a long term play that short term owners will ignore.

There’s always going to be a Cleveland in any football league.

I would say the biggest hurdle would be health and liability insurance. Would a players union ask for a profit-sharing structure which can pay for that? Or would the owners insist on a partial labor subsidy, as most businesses do?

        • They plan to play in the summer which I think makes more sense than winter but do think their 6 game plan is too short, players need more opportunities than that to showcase themselves. I also think their plan to play in SoCal is an error, put the league somewhere in TX so it’s more central and in a place that has demonstrated it’ll support lower level football.

TV is definitely an issue which is where I think they are in trouble, the NFL being involved would solve this but I don’t think the NFL wants to risk alienating college football so they probably wouldn’t get involved

          • I didn’t see the summer play announcement. It also makes sense since it’s not a direct conflict with the NFL. But it does make the welfare of players a concern, IMO.

I would think of it in terms of drawing 10% of an engaged viewing public who is looking for football viewing while they’re dreaming big for their NFL teams instead of drawing 20% of a disinterested public waiting for their NFL teams to start their engines in the late summer. There will be eyes on it. But they really need to take a piece of the normal scheduling pie without being in direct conflict with the NFL itself. Fridays in December would be a great place to start. You could easily have a 10 game season with two byes and a post-season that ends in early April, just in time for everyone to be talking about how good so-and-so looked in that new league, and could he be a top five pick, and all that.

Maybe they limit the season to six games during the summer because they’re simply in the incubation stage and need to work out their management structure before they scale it to a broader audience. SoCal is fine for that because any model is going to subsist on TV (not gate) revenues. If they can show strong management, I can see scalability to divisions in Texas, Florida and in or around Ohio. Those would be more likely franchises because new investors would want to have the cash generated from gate receipts in addition to TV revenues. But that would be icing on the cake in the future if they succeed now, while finances are upside down.

    • I just don’t see how they will drum up much fan interest.

The only play I see here is frame it as a legitimate developmental league for the NFL and hope the NFL invests after a few years of seeing good results. Even that seems like a long shot.

      • Agree that NFL involvement (branding ideally) would help but I do think a market exists. I could see guys do this instead of a JUCO or sophomores going there for a year instead of playing their junior year.

        • I think they do a disservice to their potential talent pool by limiting the max age (or years removed from HS). If they are truly a developmental league, they can cap participation in said league at three years. But you also have players who go JUCO and want to play college ball who fall through the cracks after two years because they just don’t have the academic chops… or talent enough to game the system for one fall term. They also have military and mission players who can make a go of it. And it would probably eliminate a lot of graduate transfers who think they have talent enough to play on the next level. Do we think Vernon Adams would have played at Nikegon (or Montreal) if he’s making the same $60k plus housing he’s making now? He could easily spend a couple years in a league dedicated to professional football development and making some money for his efforts.

That pro-style development, btw, is another enticement for potential “career” athletes. The NCAA has done an increasingly poor job of providing certain subsets of labor because of schemes implemented in order to create wins in a widely varying talent pool, not development for schemes and principles which allow talent to beat like talent in a much shallower pool.

          • One idea I’ve always thought could make sense would be for the NFL to run an NFL2 that plays on Wednesday/Thursday nights in the fall, have the NFL own the contracts like MLS does and play in smaller stadiums (15-25,000) seats in places like Portland. I think such a developmental league is the most likely model to gain traction, put the games on NFL Network, use Thursday Night Football as a lead in for the NFL2 game of the week. No age restrictions in the league.

          • I would agree with a fall schedule for mid-week games if the NFL were to control the NFL2 and they used a relegation system. But nobody is going to survive against the NFL if they go head to head without their support.

That’s why I think once HS and NCAA seasons are over, Fridays in a season offset from the NFL but complimenting its draft would be most successful.

          • I know. But those are the only parameters by which they might succeed with that model. Otherwise it’s a loss leader like most developmental leagues. And the NFL owners are as afraid of loss leaders as they are of being worse than Cleveland any given year.

So that ain’t gonna happen either.

          • Don’t think it’s a loss leader automatically, if you can get 15000 fans to games, fill broadcast windows in NFL Network and keep payrolls at CFL levels (under 5 million) I think they could not only break even but make a profit…

          • At what price point? I’m not going to spend more than $20 to attend a developmental league game. I have no emotional attachment to them. At twice as many games as they have planned, they would need to charge $28 a head just to cover payrolls.

The money’s going to come in TV and ad revenue. If they have a good plan, they can ink a TV deal for half what college conferences get and be profitable. And I will probably watch at first just because it has that new car smell. I’m sure they’re counting on more like me just to get eyes on their product.

          • I think you can get easily 15,000 fans for an NFL2 in the right markets. Hell, the XFL got 23,000, US CFL teams got near 15,000, Arena football averages just shy of 10,000…

Now, you say you’d have no rooting interest, that’s a different question. Note, I’m not in favor of a pure developmental league, I’d favor a league where players can make a career (like the CFL) but with a working relationship that allows more player movement between leagues than the CFL does. I think you’d get interest in such a league at the local level. You have to pick the right markets but I do think money can be made.

As for TV, let’s say you start with 8 teams, have a Tuesday night game, Wednesday doybleheader, and a Thursday night game (either before or after the NFL game), broadcast them all on NFL Network at least at first, gotta get better ratings than the top 10 RBs of the 90’s show that is usually on NFL Network on weeknights.

          • The latest iteration of what you speak was tried as the WFL with Texas as an anchor. It’s just not a viable system. It was so poor that it lost teams to the GDFL, the D league of the GFL, an Aussie American Football league.

Combine that with the structure of NFL Europe, and you don’t have a product that compels an audience worthy of gate receipts necessary to sustain the model.

I think it’s a great idea to limit your talent pool to players who can’t be in the NFL as a start. I think it should be expanded a bit, but it’s a start. The goal for success will not lie in its affiliation with the NFL. The goal for its investors will be to make a loss leader into a property viable enough for the NFL to want to purchase it. And the first way to do that is to provide an organization which is both outside their talent pool and never in conflict with it in terms of marketing and scheduling.

So yes, boutique audiences in places like Boise, Portland, Albuquerque, El Paso, San Antonio, St Louis, Sacramento and others are viable for future franchises. But they only buy in if you can show scalability in an incubated start-up.

Note: I know this isn’t necessarily true because too many people with a romanticized vision of owning a football team and an excessively idle bank account buy into all sorts of bad models, especially hyped-up money grabs like the XFL. But it should be what a wise investor looks at. And the NFL owners are not willing to buy anything that is not a financial enhancement or at least a marketing expense, like the WLAF.

So the original goal of making it financially viable should include not stepping on the bear’s toes, because they’re not going to have the NFL as a sanctioned partner until they can do so. That also does not presuppose that some of the NFL owners and management have not looked at the model and invested themselves. That’s to say that if they do so, it is in their interest as investors independent of the NFL who sees value in such a model and might be able to advance it in order for them to realize a pay-out. Although, I wonder if ownership would be bound by any noncompete clauses.

    • Great idea and long overdue imo.

I personally am tired of the BS majors the colleges create in order to justify having a kid who has no academic skills or ability and shouldn’t be there taking up space.

Speaking of BS and college: I recently had some X-Ray work done and noticed that the tech had an OSU badge holder strap around his neck so I couldn’t help but say Go Beavs. :-) Anyway, it turned out he’d gotten a degree in Forestry and when he couldn’t find work in that area……

He was a bit pissed at OSU because they didn’t bother to tell him how few jobs there were in that area and what the odds were of landing one of them.

It’s all about money isn’t it? Money from sports….. Enroll students in career fields where there’s little if any change of employment just so there’s money to keep the profs paid. Who gives a shit what happens to the kid once they’re out the door.

Priorities are all f’ed up if you ask me. But then wdik.

      • I sort of agree. But I also sort of have to wonder what degree is out there for people seeking a science degree who can’t do this research for themselves. Being an X-Ray tech is better than being an English major who is now in pharmaceutical sales.

      • I don’t feel sorry for him at all. I was a forestry major in the mid-70s and after my sophomore year I could see that the spotted owl was going to lock up all the timber and there wouldn’t be a job when I graduated so I quit school and went back when I found a better choice. If you’re going to spend that kind of money shouldn’t you do your own homework?
