  1. Thanks for the thread, Nicebeaver.
Down 3-1 going to the t7, Luke at 74 pitches and has given up 7 hits. With the idea of limiting him to around 80 pitches in preparation for the post season, do you puill him? Bad juju to pull him on a down note?

    • T7 yields 2 k’s and a GO for Luke. Now he should sit (if Casey subscribes to Bill’s plan to get some rest for him).

  2. Lornach hits into a DP early and makes a bonehead play trying to stretch a double into a triple.
    LVP for the night.

  3. So, Luke is left in for the t9, ends the (half) inning with 105 pitches. Word from broadcasters on TV is that Casey plans to let Luke sit out the ACU series. I like Bills plan better.
Down 3-2 going to the b9.

  4. Beavs win 4-3.
WSU closer walks in 2 runs in the b9!
Power of the Kwan, power of Goss, and Anderson’s hit streak ends…..but he don’t care!

  5. Couple good quotes in the GT’s game piece.

This on Luke going the full 9, “After the eighth, I came in and I told (pitching coach Nate) Yeskie I wasn’t going to come out, Heimlich said. “So that was the conversation.”

Also mentioned in the piece is this: Jake Thompson (11-0, 1.11 ERA) will start Saturday’s game … and Drew Rasmussen (1-0, 1.50) is scheduled to go Sunday if he doesn’t close Game 2.

NOTE: This Lundeberg guy who covers Beavs baseball for the GT is smart enough to be an ab’er; he comments in the Big O with reference to his own stories in the GT. Smart.

    • I just noticed his story in the o-live comments. Thought it was weird but noticed a twitter icon. Is O-live maybe pulling in tweets to the comments section when a hashtag is used?

      • Looks like O-live must automatically pull in tweets from specific accts during the game, maybe to make it appear that their comments sections are an active community?
Too bad it doesn’t appear to be tied to any specific keyword or hashtag. Could have been fun

        • I can see algorithms that draw on paid commentary. It’s not a hard thing to envision.

Your listening time is monetized. Yay for unfettered capitaization. You may rest, but your tax dollars pay for you to be bombarded with so much crap that you don’t even know what crap is anymore.

There’s also a contingency for that segment.

          So… who the hell cares?

          • Sorry.

Do I need to clarify this? I don’t think I should need to do so here. Numbers are numbers. You are now just a number. You chose to be this way. Live with it, you fucking pussy.

            Your world.

          • And if you choose to not be a number and believe in equality, then you choose big K economics, not the pretend pseudo-crap we’ve been living with for the past 40 years.

Failed shit leaves stains on history. Be a part of that stain, or fucking wake up.

  6. It is good to win but I don’t think the SEC, etc teams are going to be so kind to the Beavs pitching-wise. I really worry about Beavs offense in the post-season.

    • Yes… so do I. I think they should act like the Ducks and just give up instead of trying. That makes much more sense than anything that might make real sense. If they make their shoes with waffle irons instead of just selling their souls… yes… yes… they aren’t fucked from the get go.

Sorry… I just realized we might have a audience who didn’t know we were fucked from the get go.

      sweaty balls

  7. I do not agree with sitting Luke next week unless there is some kind of injury. If Casey wants to limit him, then limit him to 3 innings. Not getting any game work for two weeks could be detrimental.

Wouldn’t mind seeing Gambrell get a start next week if Fehmel is still out.

    • There’s the injury of having to play for a whole season.

One week will not make Luke a lazy good for nothing something.

Give me a break. This team is self-fulfilling. They will come out and tell you that it all takes work… after they’ve done their daily chores.

  8. So… we had an early season Saturday game on a Friday.

I can live with that. If you don’t want to make your fielders play, don’t throw strikes. Go ahead and don’t trust your teammates to do their jobs. That’s a wart we can exploit for a game.

  9. Any of you locals know what has happened to Martinek? There was a rumor that he left school due to an illness in his family.

  10. So… let’s talk position grouping and batting order. I feel we let it go this year. Who’s going to argue with it the way it’s gone?

That’s why I think we have to commend PC for getting this group together, beyond their own expectations. There’s some amazing talent sitting on the bench that we have yet to see. This isn’t a one year thing.

But when we look at past winners of the CWS, we see a lot of teams with two good to great starters and a closer. I wonder if PC is moving Jake to 2 and Drew to the pen/mythical third game because that’s the conservative play.

Today’s game will make it for Jake. It’s a part of that giggle thing I was taking about previously. The ju ju is all pointed in our direction at this moment.

    Hi ju ju.

I respect the ju ju. But I also see a laser focus from this group. I mean… you’re losing, and you walk in two to win? Who does that?

I hesitate to call any kind of surety for their future. But this team has had a sense of destiny from the beginning of the season. And I would hate to see them lose it for even one game. I’m not a Cubs fan, but it was good to see them create their own destiny, an acceptance of the reality they themselves created.

One could call it the responsibility of accepting the outcome that is due a person after they have committed to and worked toward a goal. Or you could flake it off on some one word laziness like destiny or fate. But understand that this team knows what it takes to win. And they will do so.

      • I disagree with moving Rutsch forward, for the long term. He has acted as a frosh, wanting to play every game.

        Cool.

Rest… like one of us old people. Put the man in the 8 hole, and he will make the 8 hole the new 3 hole. This is the one area I disagree with PC. He maneuvers too much with the line-up. But I crave consistency. So maybe PC is just one of those leebruls who wants constant change… as if that means anything.

I want my C in the 8 hole. The numbers say I’m right. Do it.

    • Would love to see them with a dominant closer heading into post-season. Not sure if they’d be better off preparing Rasmussen for that role or keeping him as a 3rd starter on a limited pitch count.

I do like the amount of bench players getting experience this season. The at bats and experience that Cary, Preston Jones, Malone and the 2 Andy’s are getting may be a huge benefit if the Beavs make a deep run. Always nice to have lots of pinch hitting options in post season games.

    • Someone was here proposing Nebraska was going to win some national championship. Maybe this will be that? I think their best chance is women’s volleyball. On the men’s side, their wrestling team is decent, but they won”t even place second in their conference. So… no.

Fair play… we wouldn’t place fifth in that conference in a good year.

So life goes on, and the wholesome flyover entity that… um… stole Mike Riley from us has to deal with their reality for at least another year. Has he sold his Corvallis residence yet? Surely, he’s bought a Nebraska home.

      Surely.

  11. Thanks, NiceBeav. I was away all week and only got to visit the site for a few minutes, and it will be the same next week. Appreciate the pinch hit.

  12. Tyner to osu isn’t a god send. He’s a mystery. At best he’s a contributor. Hard to see a ton of upside due to his injury history.

    • What’s the downside?
I suppose the distraction of a former duck becoming a beavs?(how often has that happened?)
I see it as insurance that we won’t burn our 2 freshman redshirts. We still need a stronger O-line to open holes gor these guys. GA mentioned he’s bringing in one more O-lineman by summer camp. Any rumblings who that might be?

      • Downside? Possibly encourages AP or another RB to look elsewhere, all for a guy who has proven to be breakable (like Nall) and may disrupt the locker room if not handled carefully. Didn’t GA once have the team give the OK on a player (wasn’t it STG?).

I’m not down on TT, just pointing out what looks like possible downside. I see this as a test of GA’s ability.
And, yeah, I sure hope there is another (quality) OL headed our way.

  13. Quite a game by Jake Thimpson. Quite a season as well. Let’s hope that he continues through post season.
Heimlich, Thompson, Rasmussen, Britton, Fehmel, impressive starting group going into post season.

        • Probably… because the New York Times is a failing paper. It’s wonderful and respected. It’s failing. I really enjoy and respect the work they do. The failing New York Times is dishonest fake news. They’re a wonderful source of information that serves the people, and I really respect them. They’re failing.

          • Tic?

I’m just quoting our esteemed dumbshit in chief… not verbatim (but close)… in a timeline.

It’s easy. If 4D5 says something, you can bet he’s now directly contradicting something he said publicly within the last month. And you can also bet he will contradict it directly within the next week.

It’s mostly because he’s a moron. We have now gone from, “Omigod! I just, like, wish he would stop tweeting. He’s, like, harshing my worldly buzz,” to, “He should really just shut up.. not say anything… ever… for fear of making the world think he represents the USA.”

          • That’s what I’m trying to say. There’s so much evil losing going on right now. Do we think nothing has consequences any more?

            Deutsche Bank… la la la….

    • And it didn’t even take a whole game to lose Tyner with that Riley bullshit. “Tyner left at halftime”. Riley couldn’t close the deal with Suh either.

  14. So didn’t the RB from Utah medically retire and then come back to Utah the same year just in time to jam it up OSU’s ass and break off the handle?

Is there a time limit or something?

    • I think within the same season and same team a player can return. Also, I don’t see that it was mentioned above (sorry, if I missed it), but there is a possibility Tyner could get a medical redshirt still and play two years for the Beavs.

      • Yup, thats’s the way I remember it. Took a few weeks off to care for a child and get his head straight and returned to make some good contributions to the team over the last few games.

I think he said he was “retiring” but wonder about his (and TT’s) scholarship status when making that statement.

  15. Drew is pitching pretty aggressively today. I guess that’s what happens when you’re on a pitch count. Could get to the 6th if he keeps this up.

  16. I was listening to Parker on the baseball broadcast and he’s apparently getting tweets about Tyner, he would not say Tyner’s name. Was he being coy or is that something to do with the university?

  17. Stanford sweeps the dawgs with a 10 inning victory today. Meggs will have to call in more chips than he’s got in order to go post season this year. Any guesses as to where he’ll try to send Tree?

      • I researched awhile back and found little about the Advisory Committee, just some news items which led me to deduce that the term is 3 years.

Here is a link which lists the members of the Div 1 Baseball Committee which selects the field of 64 and is advised by the various regional advisory committees (RAC’s) of which Meggs is a member of the Western RAC.

        http://web1.ncaa.org/committees/committees_roster.jsp?CommitteeName=1MBA

Note that there is no one from the PAC12 on the Baseball Committee and that some of these cats are “eligible for reappointment”.
        ///////////////////////////////
Here is some info from a story by Danny Moran back on April 13, this year:

…Casey never specifically said he blamed Meggs, the only Pac-12 representative on the tournament’s West Regional Advisory Committee, he did draw a distinction from prior years in the way the process unfolded for him.

“I do know that in the past the people that have represented our conference have asked me about information that can help move us forward,” Casey told John Canzano in a radio interview last May. “I wasn’t given that opportunity this year.”

        AND,

Every Division I conference selects a representative to be part of a Regional Advisory Committee. The Pac-12 is one of seven members of the West Regional Advisory Committee that speaks three times throughout the season about teams in their region.

There is more in Danny’s piece if you are interested:

        http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2017/04/oregon_state_baseball_series_a_1.html

This piece from Danny on Casey’s reaction right after the field was announced last year probably should be required reading, Casey may have his warts but he has CLASS as well:

        http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2016/05/oregon_state_baseball_coach_pa_2.html

        • Those stories are too painful to revisit! What those committee assholes conspired to do out of their own selfish interests (or dislike of Casey?) should have been investigated by the NCAA. By any metric you want to use, the Beavs were not even a bubble team last year. It’s like the committee refused to count that last weekend when they swept UCLA. Their minds were made up.

  18. Anyone know what’s up with Scotland Church? I had completely forgotten about him until I saw him the in the dugout during yesterday’s game. I could be wrong but I don’t think he’s pitched this year.

Injured? Doghouse? Buried due to pitching depth?

  19. I don’t pay too much attention to Nebraska football anymore (especially in the off season), but this made me laugh. The Huskers are “America’s Team” according to Smilin’ Mike because they have recruits from all 50 states now. I guess pressure causes you to come up with some bizarre theories to try to keep the heat off?

    http://journalstar.com/niche/neighborhood-extra/news/nebraska-america-s-team-says-riley/article_e0c06142-fead-5d40-a1ff-40146b9e1302.html

    • It’s actually a pretty schrewd move as it plays to the perception of their fan base. Most college fans pay attention only to their team. Some know a little about their rivals and a little less about other conference members. Nebraska fans think the whole country pays attention and actually cares what goes on with their athletic program.

    • I love how he talks about the diversity of “America’s Team”, but the lead photo is a picture of 4 white guys. Nothing wrong with it necessarily, just humorous.

    • Coaches submit the nominations before the season. The award people don’t keep track of players on every team so it’s up to the coaches to make sure their players get recognized.

  20. If Riley gets canned from Nebraska at the end of the year….which I don’t think is unfathomable maybe we can pick him up at a discount to be the QB coach.

    • No thanks. It’s like when people get divorced than after a few years and another bad marriage or 2, decide to get married again. It rarely works out because they both forgot why they hated each other. Fortunately we have not forgotten. Someone should make t-shirts that say “0-7 civil war, never forget” then a big picture of mike with that gum chewing smirk on his face.

  21. Wsu series wrap up,

Checked almost every box. Good pitching by all starters and good hitting. No injuries of note. Got a few of the backups in with some decent playing time.

    Up next – ACU
One of the worst teams in the country. Team ERA over 7! Also a bad fielding team too. Decent hitting squad though.

#273 in RPI, one spot above Portland.

A sweep is expected. Quite a letdown if they lose one. Expecting a spring training style of game. Lots of players getting work in. Pitchers should all be on pitch counts. All pitchers should get in some work with 4 games.

  22. OT – Saw something about a WBB recruit so went to check that out and saw Weise had a good night in her second WNBA game. 5/5 from three to start. Finished with 22 points, 6/10 from three.

Apparently Hamblin had 19 points in about 9 minutes….

    The WBB recruit was Morris:

“6-foot-7 forward Patricia Morris is the newest commitment for the Beavs. She is from Duarte High School in Duarte, California. Morris committed to Oregon State the weekend of Mother’s Day during an official visit.”

    • I’ve been curious for a few weeks on this guy. He started following most of our coaching staff and our rivals/scout OSU affiliates a few weeks back. I talked to mike at beaversedge who at the time didnt know if anything was up. Only one of our coaches followed him back, and since then, he has also appeared to be in talks with a couple other teams.

Not sure why he’s leaving TCU, and dont think it’s a position of need really, but would be tough to pass on a 4* cb if he’s healthy.

      • Thanks Nicebeaver. We have a scholarship available from what I’ve read but Andersen wants an OT. Will be interesting to see if anything develops from this.

        • I’m with you. A grad-transfer starting caliber offensive lineman would be my ideal choice to fill a final spot.
Seems like every year, a handful of spots open up as guys medically retire or grad transfer out from OSU. Wouldnt surprise me if we ended up with a couple more spots to fill during the summer. Also, Robinett just left, so not sure if that means there is another opening?

  23. Conforto with 2 home runs and a single in the Mets game-only 4th inning. This dude is on ?. Is he even on the all Star ballot?

  24. BASEBALL- Even Casey is in a cheery mood, per Eggers.
We had some concern here about the possibility of one or more starting pitchers not getting any action at all vs ACU, Casey dispels that notion in the piece:
Heimlich, Thompson and Rasmussen are expected to start against Abilene Christian, though they may not go deep into games.
“We’re not going to extend an arm,” Casey said. “The pitching will be lined up for the regional.”

And this, “I told the guys to enjoy it for the next couple of days,” he said. “They deserve to enjoy it. There’s always another step. We’ll get prepared to take it.
“I’m a short-term goal guy. I want us to be better on Thursday than we were this weekend.”

The piece also includes several nice comments from Marty Lees and Dan Spencer.

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/359964-239318-no-loss-for-words-about-beavers-

    • nice article thanks for the link. I think that this total lack of interest the Ducks’ fans have in baseball can clearly be seen in this years civil war series were the fans were so pro-Beavers it felt like a home series

    • Interesting piece, thanks for the link.

I note the $40k/game loss “does not include the roughly $4 million a year Oregon spends on debt payments for PK Park, the funds for which come out of a separate athletic department account.”

  25. Lundeberg at the GT up with a piece which touches upon the post season bids (where most have the Beavs, Bruins, Tree, and Zona in), says this:
“Washington (26-25, 12-15), Utah (24-24, 12-15) and Oregon (29-23, 11-16) all have RPI woes — the Huskies are in the best shape at 68 — and will be hoping for a miracle on selection Monday.

A miracle? Or something more sinister?

  26. According to an article in OLive, Rivals 4* QB Brevin White likes Corvallis, coaching staff that has “made him a priority,” and the RB and WR talent OSU is collecting and developing. The RB and WR talent seem to be having a strong persuasive affect on him. I know some here had predicted that as WR talent improved, QB interest would increase, that process seems to be occurring now, at least with this prospect. Combine that with the new WR coach and his changes to the offense, and OSU should be looking more attractive to QBs.

  27. And more on what we (probably) know about Mikayla Pivec’s drive as a two sport SA.

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2017/05/mikayla_pivec_spends_basketbal.html#incart_river_index

She says, “I’m used to staying busy and I like working out.”
Her coach says, “She thanked me and thanked the girls every day at practice,” ,,. “She definitely didn’t take it for granted, didn’t walk around with a big head like ‘I deserve to be out here.'”

  28. Though I’m happy to hear that Casey and Co. have happened to bring in someone in the field of sport and performance psychology, it’s not like they haven’t done it in the past.
    i.e., Charlatan Brian Cain circa 2011 https://briancain.com/blog/with-some-help-from-peak-performance-coach-brian-cain-oregon-state-baseball-vaults-to-top-of-college-baseball-polls.html

Cain ‘supposedly’ had the team rolling and claimed plenty of accolades until the wheels came off toward the end of the season when he then threw the players under the bus and bailed without a shred of accountability for their struggles.

My point being, I’m happy Nate and the Beavs have strong connections to people who are in the field of mental skills training. It’s my field of work as well, and I know how such resources can be of great benefit. Regardless though, the experience and understanding of the game that our coaches possess can in many ways mirror what applied sport and performance psychology trainers know. Sometimes we just put big words and theories behind that which coaches readily implement.

One of the largest names in our field is Ken Ravizza who gets plenty of publicity for being close with Cubs manager Joe Maddon since the Rays. Ken is a tenure professor at Cal State Fullerton and alongside Horton, was an integral part to their baseball success in the 90’s and early 2000’s. And he still is today. As we can see, even with a boost in $$$$, Horton still lacks a bit of that grit that could be provided by a mental performance coach. I don’t think that Casey and the Beavs would ever fall into that category though.

I did see recently that Oregon put out a job posting for someone to be a mental coach, but from what the job description looked like, they only intend to utilize that individual with the football team. I’m still unsure why Oregon State refuses to get on board with other D-I schools and hire someone in-house for all their sports.

But don’t get me wrong… As great as I think our baseball team and coaches are, if they called me up to be a resource and seek expert counsel, I can guarantee that I’d break some land-speed records in my travels.

But alas, I’ll settle for some travel to Omaha come Father’s Day Weekend…

    • I appreciate your insight.

There have been a number of cases over the last few years in which a sports/performance psych has been mentioned. Always on a consulting type basis, and for FB as well as other sports. While I cannot recall details right now, they always attract my attention because of angry’s long held advocacy for such a person as a full time part of athletics at OSU.

“Sometimes we just put big words and theories behind that which coaches readily implement.”…..well said.

      Have fun in Omaha!!

    • “Sometimes we just put big words and theories behind that which coaches readily implement.”
      Agree…….well put.

Should have an AB get together in Omaha.
