Fall Camp Thread

127

Alright, on to Fall camp. I’m almost certain that wasn’t Craig Evans in the photo NiceBeaver posted. So question one needs to be: does the ever play for the Beavs?

If he doesn’t start from game 1, I knock off at least one win, but maybe two. He’s that important.

The other interesting bits are how Tyner will fit in at RB. He could be a beast if he’s in shape and stays healthy. Secondary could be really good this year and a team strength, so I’m interested to see Irvine, Walace, et al develop. People are worried about the OL, and I get why, but I think they can mix and match there to get a decent line. Depth is thin, but there are some young guys from the past two classes who look the part already. I think they can make do.

Obviously the final interesting bit is how the QB situation shakes out. Nall slipping up and saying that Luton is the starter is odd. Don’t know what to make of that. But in any event, the past three seasons Gary Andersen has managed to pick the wrong QB, dating back to Wisconsin. Again, this could cost us games.

If the Beavs don’t win 6 this year, I think it will come down to errors in personnel/management and Evans not playing the full season (if at all). If everything goes right, which is rare, I think they win 7 games. I just have no faith in GA/McGiven in analyzing QBs and/or starting the correct one.

  1. I know Craig Evans has been in Corvallis all summer. I met him. Sure seems like he’s going to play unless something has recently come up.

  2. Heard from a guy who recently played golf with Anderson at a donor event:

“If I don’t win 7-8 games this year with this last recruiting class, I’m not doing my job.”

    FWIW

  3. Also interesting regarding Evans, one of his JC teammates who supposedly visited this last week, Nino Alibegic, tweeted out this morning that he had a great visit with Oregon. Never mentioned OSU though?
Seems odd to ignore one visit but post about the other, especially when a friend already is supposed to be at OSU.

      • I was at a wedding in Cali last year and an aunt of the bride who was about 75 asked what university I went to. I said Oregon State, she piped up “oooh I love those ducks”. I said no your thinking of the clown college your neice attended down the road, im taking about the Oregon State beavers. The bride was not amused, the groom was crying from laughing so hard.

    • I think he should start Game 1. Need to win it but I honestly feel Hodgins will give us as good a chance as anyone else and the quick learning in Game 1 will serve us well for Minnesota where it will help to have him hitting his stride early in the season. Then from there he should settle in real quick as a valuable offensive starter who makes plays and is a reliable catcher of balls in his vicinity.

  4. I too get the sense this offensive line is going to be all right. OT Blake Brandel allegedly up to 325, says Lavaka and Moore are freaks in the weight room with Lavaka easily squatting over 700 lbs. Also praises intelligence of new center Sumner Houston.

    • Not thrilled with Houston at C. I haven’t looked at the backup plans, but hopefully we have one. Maybe he pans out, but I don’t have a good feeling about him.

  5. I’ve updated the roster spreadsheet and scholarship numbers. 3 new guys stand out.

#38 Alex Bland- Sophomore Punter from Swinburne University in Henley Beach, Australia
#56 Carson Sharp- Junior Long Snapper from Gulf Breeze, FL (bounceback from South Alabama and College of the Sequoias)
#45 Ralph Taufa’asau-Freshman Line Backer from Pago Pago, American Samoa

Without those 3 counted, I’m at 82 scholarships. If those 3 are on scholarship, then the full 85 are accounted for in the spreadsheet, but right now I have them as ‘?’
These are likely the 3 mystery additions GA alluded to on the radio last week. Think he said they were going to be greyshirts or blueshirts and would normally be “highly recruited” if they were to be part of the next year’s class.

    • Most of the other changes are related to 3 new walk-ons(Bush, Bramscher and Holum) as well as a few position changes around the Safety and LB positions. Nothing major.

Keiran Yancy, a walk-on at RB the last couple of years isn’t listed any longer also.

  6. Larry Scott for some dumb reason is too focused on verbal agreements. Just like the Pac-16 he fails to get a supposed agreement with AT&T’s DirecTV in late summer/early fall 2015 in writing.

“AT&T had actually reached an agreement with the Pac 12 prior to the start of the 2015 college football season on both a carriage fee and a programming plan.

But SBJ said the deal collapsed when AT&T added a last-minute wrinkle that eventually blew up the negotiations. The telco demanded that the Pac 12 allow it to wire every conference campus with DIRECTV’s video service. This would give the satcaster, which now has more than 20 million subscribers, an even greater footprint.

Scott brought that proposal to the conference presidents, who rejected it.

Since 2015, there have been no indication that serious talks have been held and now Stephans is suggesting DIRECTV and AT&T have no interest in getting on board.”

I remember those signal tests and was 99% sure DirecTV would air starting Week 1 in 2015 for a pretty good USC game. Scott allowed an original partner in AT&T to screw him over late and instead of bargaining like he could have done Oklahoma abd Texas better at certain points he just takes a less appealing option to Presidents without any effort at back and forth bargaining when a deal was supposedly already agreed to. Knock 10 cents off and give AT&T and DirecTV a favored nations clause since the merger makes them that much larger. Or nake them pay a specific sum on top of carriage fees if they want an additional deal to wire campuses with DirecTV.

Scott just doesn’t focus enough on the benefit the conference needs and that 6 years of not having flexibility has cost our national exposure.

    • You’re blaming Scott for AT&T being shits? Allowed AT&T to screw him over late? Huh? They were greedy and asked for something they should have known had no logistical possibility in this conference. And this was after Directv made the deal. But AT&T has to squeeze the life out of anything it touches nowadays. So when they bought Directv and fired all its management, they blew this deal up on purpose. This is just a small taste of how it will be to deal with them if the Time Warner merger goes through.

Fuck AT&T. Their business model is behind the times, and Stephenson will be canned in a couple years or so when the shareholders finally get fed up with him. You can’t just buy more stuff and report earnings based on just having more stuff. You have to actually do something to survive the next couple decades.

    • No prob, hope the roster spreadsheet is helpful. Seems like there’s never a reliable place to find scholarship numbers, so thought it would be a good way to keep track

  7. Did Nall actually slip up and say that Luton will be the starter? I don’t think so!

Here is the link to the Nall interview on Dirt and Sprague:
    http://d3efjls8gnbg8i.cloudfront.net/1641870/119933404.mp3?rhihttphost=1080thefan.hosted.cx

I finally got a chance to listen to it and was surprised that this interview led to the tweet below. I don’t think Nall actually gave a solid feel for who will start at QB.

Listen to it, Nall is only in the first 13 minutes.

Here again, is the tweet from Brandon Sprague, I don’t think the interview supports his statement:

“Nall was on the show Thursday and all but confirmed that Luton is the starter. No announcement but it’s his job to lose is 100% the vibe”

    • I just listened to it. I don’t understand how Sprague could have made that leap. The only explanation could be that he’s a complete moron.

      • In the same segment Sprague comments on a poll he ran on his site asking listeners who the best RB in the Pac is, Nall or Freeman. Sprague said he didnt care about the results and he just put the poll up to troll.

  8. OT, but some Beaver tidbits throughout these notes by Eggers. Including at the end how Conforto and Cooks won’t return his calls:

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/367025-246987-lakers-are-back-sure-they-are

BTW, it occurred to me that Cooks may become a great candidate for at least some offensive coaching in the future; bright, articulate, great work ethic…working with Brees first, now Brady….I could see him progressing through WR>”Passing Game Coordinator”>Offensive Coordinator….

  9. Evans won’t be practicing this week with the team. Eligibility issues seem to be the problem. Not sure yet if it will be taken care of before the season starts. Gary Andersen will touch on it during today’s media availability.

  10. Did they release a schedule for fall camp? Which practices are open to the public?

I live locally again, and would be interested in going and doing a little write up of what I’ve seen at practice.

  11. Gary Andersen post practice video from our good friends at 24ScouBlitz(or whatever that site is called)

    https://youtu.be/Eop12daLQeU

Sounds like GA still thinks Evans will be playing for us, but is vague about the details. Deja vu…
Also sounds like Calvin Tyler stood out to him today.

  12. GA on Evans:
“He’ll be here at some point. He’s taking care of his business and Craig is exactly where we knew he would be when we recruited him,” Andersen said. “So he’s done what we’ve asked him to do and we’ll just take it day by day as we move through time here.”

“Exactly where we knew he would be?…….done what we’ve asked him to do…?”

C’mon coach, you didn’t ask him to do enough to be present at the very beginning of Fall Camp? That doesn’t sound like the GA we thought we knew.

Disturbing, and as angry indicated, maybe worth a W or two if Evans doesn’t get his act together.

  13. OT: MR looked like hell at the B1G media day. I was thinking it and the wife said it. I think the vise of expectations has been tightened and he is feeling the pressure.

  14. Riley is so out of place in Lincoln. They need a former player or someone from NE.

This press conference is brutal. It’s like he doesn’t even know half his roster, no energy at the press conference…it feels like church bingo instead of Big 10 media day.

    • He masterfully set the expectation 45 seconds into his address by mentioning the lack of snaps by the entire Nebby qb group. Built in excuse as we saw for too long.

I don’t want to pile on at this point, but the observation from past years is pretty simple to see repeated.

PJ Fleck is a stark contrast to Riley. Glad we play Minny early. He might be Harbaugh 2.0 in the Big 10.

      • I saw that build in excuse, too, and he hinted that switching to a 3-4 is another excuse…
Not sure those are going to fly in Nebraska. They’re going to hate him by year’s end.

        • I made it to 1:30. That was like something you see on c-span2 at 2 o’clock in the morning. Good ol’ low energy Mike.

      • A lot of the Neb. fans are thinking that their new QB will be a one and done because he will be so awesome! #delusional. They need to look at his history with first year starters.

    • My dad and I were at the CWS. A local asks us if we’re from OR. I think our Beavs gear gave it away. We say yes, as a matter of fact, we are. He suggests we stop in Lincoln on our way home and pick up Mike Riley……we all laugh….and then a simultaneous NO!

Apparently the golly gee whiz schtick along with typical crazy Rileyesque finishes, some of which are won, some lost, is wearing thin……also, the over/under for wins in vegas is like 5 or some shit……that ain’t gonna cut it in Lincoln.

  15. Saw Eggers tweet this quote from GA. I like that he isn’t shying away from high expectations of himself and his team.

Gary Andersen on @BeaverFootball goals for ’17: “If you get double digits (wins), you’re an elite team. The expectations are to be elite.”

  16. PAC12 media day today, pre-season media poll has the Northern Div going this way:
    Huskies
    Tree
    WSU
    swoosh
    Beavs
    Bears

So, no respect? Good or Bad??
    (or just……meh…)?

    • I’d like to see how the Pac media has been at this for the last several years. Did they pick Nikegon to be last in the North last year, as they were? I’m sure all of them picked CU to win the South.

A historical analysis of their picks would tell you how I feel about their current picks.

      • 2016 Pac12 media poll(actual rank in parentheses):
        Pac-12 North
        1. Stanford (3)
        2. Washington (1)
        3. Oregon (6)
        4. Washington State (2)
        5. California (4)
        6. Oregon State(5)

        Pac-12 South
        1. UCLA (5)
        2. USC (2)
        3. Utah (3)
        4. Arizona (6)
        5. Arizona State (4)
        6. Colorado(1)

          • You’re right. The site I was using (cbs sports) ranked based on conference record, but the tie breaker appears to be either alphabetical or overall record, rather than head to head.

          • All sites have it that way, that I know of. I don’t really care because there wasn’t really need to quibble over it since there were no bowl selections going on. But in a study of accuracy, we need to correct that.

Most write-ups and reviews simply said we tied for fourth, which is also correct if we don’t use the tie-break. That would make the experts’ pick more incorrect, placing Cal in a tie for fourth instead of fifth.

      • In 2015 they actually picked the south pretty well (flip arizona/ucla)

        2015 Pac12 media poll(actual rank in parentheses):

        North
        1. Oregon (2)
        2. Stanford (1)
        3. California (4)
        4. Washington (5)
        5. Washington State (3)
        6. Oregon State – (6)

        South
        1. USC (1)
        2. Arizona State (2)
        3. UCLA (4)
        4. Arizona (3)
        5. Utah (5)
        6. Colorado (6)

    • A check of the academic calendar shows Summer Term ending dates of 8/18 and 9/8; depending on whether an 8 or 11 week class is involved.

    • Looking at their schedule, they have a real shot at starting out with 6 wins and then finishing with 6 straight losses, but still making a bowl game.
Oregon/Nebraska is going to be one of the more overhyped matchups of crappy teams this year.

  17. From watching JUCO disasters on “Last Chance U”, I’d wager Evans is likely a total fuckup who will never play again. Like 10% odds he plays at D1 ever again.

    • He is from WI and could not get accepted in Madison. When he signed with Sparty, my Badger friends all said he was destined to flunk out. They were correct. Has he changed? Seemed like a reach for GA to go after him. Perhaps we get a season out of him, but this is not the type of player to build sustained success with.

      • I notice from that Last Chance U that players like this have a long history of letting down coaches, teams, and everyone around them, themselves included. It’s the exception that they change, and I’m not seeing any signs of it from him.

        • I think Andersen has done well with “that type” of player. He got Peko onto the field after all of Riley’s and OSU’s whatever office long-term screw-ups. Christian Wallace and Isaac Garcia seem to be NCAA approved – Wallace’s availability was especially dubious – yet here he is, so far.

    • How much eligibility does he have left? Is he one for one?

He’ll be fine. He may be another Chad Johnson as far as school goes. He may not and choose to remain in school so he can use the facilities… and hang out with his teammates to bask in the glory of going undefeated… baby!

In the end, we’re talking about a coach who saved Kyle Peko from becoming a Kuli. I’m guessing he knows the scores of all Evans’ homeworks, quizzes and tests. Barring a meltdown, he’s on track to be in the first game.

      • He has 2 years left, but in an interview around signing day, he did mention something about his plan to be at Oregon State for one season and then go NFL.
That could either mean he’s extremely confident in getting drafted, or that he doesn’t plan to attend class and we are just a means to an end.
My guess is that he plays for us, but doesn’t put much into the classroom part because he will be gone come January.

          • Is the little deplorable upset because his know nothing baboon of a POTUS is doing what his know nothing baboon of a POTUS has done for his entire life… and deplorable was too stupid to see it until now?

Or is that a joy I get to save for later?

          • Awww…. widdle deplorables have hurt feelings. Making fun of them is why they vote for the Huckster in Chief, not because they’re idiots. Smart people will never understand. The Trumpster fire just gets them.

Or, like he’s done his whole life, he lies to get what he wants and sells an empty bill of goods, leaving you all holding the bag… more than likely in bankruptcy court.

But let’s not talk about the one man in the history of the world who bankrupted a casino and a pro football league in America… and left a shit ton of actual hard-working people holding their own bags.

Let’s talk about how I canbe more sensitive to your sensibilities so you won’t tearfully thumb me down, like the “like-me” wusses you are.

    • They also can’t finish what they start.

      But we already knew that.

I think it’s funny you think reality gives me the sadz, when you’re the whiny wusses who can’t handle it. One cannot have everything the way he would like it. A man has no business to be depressed by a disappointment, anyway. He ought to make up his mind to get even.

  18. YAY! Jack luv’s TRUMP more than the Beavs, that’s what hw blew up a Beaver forum with TRUMP yadda yadda! Go TRUMP!

    • Your reality is funny. You’re either JP the identity thief who writes disgusting pedo-rants under other people’s handles and thinks that’s the right and moral thing to do… or you’re emulating that behavior and thinking the exact same thing.

      Or you’re a Duck.

I can see not wanting to admit that last one. But I can see where you set the bar, despite you wanting to fill the hole in with dirt.

    • Keep pressing.

You’re not going to give now, are you?

Your crowning achievement in life awaits. And you go limp?

Maybe you should express your insecurities by making fun of those who make your willie tingle.

      Your flattery is that obvious.

  19. New DamPodcast was put up today with Angie, Sprague and Alex Crawford (Beav alum who has a gig on local portland sports radio on the same station as sprague)

    https://twitter.com/BrandonSprague/status/890361189988876288

It’s not great, but I actually agree with much of what they say about the qb situation. They rag on oregon/taggarts hype a little and seem to have tempered expectations for osu.

Now, our friends at Sedge need to step up with a podcast, with people who are actually around the program (brendan slaughter and 2016 RB Marcus Greaves)
The dam podcast comes off as mostly just fans spit balling about their team. Didnt learn anything new. I think the Sedge team can put together better content.

Also, note to the dam podcast crew. Don’t wine to your listeners about how you don’t have time to do this gig because it doesnt pay well enough or whatever. Just do it or dont do it. The reason you even do it is to promote your real job, so quit yer bitchin

    • I was looking around Sedge yesterday. Greaves has some good, simple insights. I think he’s a little optimistic. But he bases it in what will be observable skill sets once we get to see them.

    • I only listened to a small portion of the podcast but noticed that Sprague again states that Nall spilled the beans on Luton being the starter during the interview on Sprague’s show. I sure didn’t hear it that way, did I miss something in the original interview??

      • I don’t know how he came to that conclusion based on the Nall interview. Unless he talked to Nall or someone else off the air and learned more information. But Nall didn’t indicate one way or the other who the starter would be.

  20. OT:

The matchups for the AdvoCare Invitational were announced yesterday. Didn’t realize this had been initially announced last fall. The Beavs play St. John’s in the first round with the winner facing Mizzou/LBST winner. UCF/Neb & WV/Marist are the other matchups. Nice to see the Beavs in a 8 team/3 game tourney finally. I can’t remember the last time we’ve played on one of these early season 8 team tournaments.

St. Louis, Southern Utah, and Wyoming are the non-con in addition to the tournament so far. Not bad.

    • They played the 2k tourney years ago, the diamond head classic 3 years ago.

This will be a real test to see if the Beavs are contenders or pretenders for the 2018 ncaa tourney

  21. Jack,
Based on what I have seen in my long, storied life, you have no right to lecture anyone on moral action. We both know better!
    Smooches!

    • I’m not lecturing anyone on anything. I’m simply pointing at a gaping vacuum where that subject would be discussed otherwise. I’m going to note that every time, and the dumb politispeak terms I have to use will trigger you every time. The best ones are the ones the GOP used to stand for, but now those people just hate them with an ignorance so wonderful. It’s like watching knee-jerk self-hatred.

Y’all just roll it on over for the new King George III… minus the intellect.

      So I guess we’re even.

      • We can go back to Dumbshit Donald’s monumentally dumb tweet that started all this when you decided to bring it here. Forget that he lied about consulting the military about it beforehand. Telling lies is what the Donald does and has always done. Forget saving any money to build his stupid wall that won’t work… with solar panels… and windows so Americans who are walking along the wall don’t get hit in the head by bags of drugs thrown over it.

Poor unsuspecting people on a walk getting hit in their heads by bags of drugs. Such is the world in which we live… so thinks moron.

Forget that it will disrupt established protocols, diminish morale, give any Klinger an out and will decrease readiness… all in conflict with his afterthoughts about his dumb tweet.

Do you really think he’ll go ahead and do it?

If he doesn’t, maybe fucking scare a moochy will fucking fire someone… or fucking kill them… or fucking fire everyone. Who knows these days? Just when you think the dumb is as dumb as dumb can be, they lower the bar that much further.

It’s all rather funny… if viewed from outside America’s quickly shrinking circle of influence.

        • I say it’s 50/50 he does it right now. Readiness alone would tell me he won’t. And once he does talk to his generals (strangely, never admirals), he will have to actually come up with a longer-term plan to implement it or just leave it alone and do nothing, like he’s already doing.

It’s obviously just him throwing a bone to Mike Pence and his dogs. We’ll see how much they actually love the troops when they discharge thousands of them. What will their DD214s read. Or will they be DD212s?

          Yeah.

This is what we’re talking about in the MAGA era.

          So dumb.

          • You wanted to talk about it.

            Talk about it.

Or is this country just some big joke to you, and Dufus Don is really just for shits and giggles while they employ their nanny state?

Well… while they try and fail over and over and over.

You have to admit even Warren Harding is looking good right now.
