Home Football McGiven — Weak Link

McGiven — Weak Link

What exactly does this guy bring to the job to make him worth keeping?

  • 3 straight years of picking the wrong QB/ran all Riley’s (better) QBs out of town.
  • QBs don’t improve under him.
  • Poor play calling.
  • Lots of “ums” and “ahs” during interviews and just sounds like a dope.
  • Haven’t looked at the recruits he landed, but offhand I don’t remember any big names.

What is he good at to justify any salary? Never mind a $185k salary and the promotion he got.

  1. Isn’t he the sole play caller this year (after sharing duties with TJ Woods last year)? I think I’ve seen enough to say that Woods should be given a chance as full time offensive coordinator after the inconsistency of last year, and the flat out disaster at CSU this year.

Also, have we had a game that we kept even close away from Reser yet? We still struggle mightily on the road, and I can’t understand it.

  2. I sort of thought the team was slowly forming an identity last year with an improving defense and a tough run first offense, with a serviceable dual-threat QB. Today reminded me of the hot mess that was Riley’s 3-9 2011 season (Mannion’s first year). Portland State played BYU tough today, might be interesting next week. One game for sure, but a lot of air has escaped from the balloon.

    • GA said he expected to run the ball over 60% of the time this year. It isn’t hard to stick with a plan. Blowing in the wind like dandelion dust isn’t a gameplan. McGiven saw a couple decent passes and wanted to keep viewing the ‘weapon’ and forgot all about game management. I have grave concerns about GA too cause saying he isn’t impressed by game management is about the stupidest thing I have ever heard a head coach say.

You can’t over think every moment. You got to have a plan based of sound assessment and saber metrics for your talent and for 90% of the game stick to it.

GA letting this game turn into a pass happy affair with a myriad of turnovers that will make it next to impossible to win is piss poor management. He said himsled this team will be best running atleast 60% of downs. If you deviate more than 5-6% from that then the train will be already starting to come off uts rails let alone the 66+% passing we saw today. Seriously all this talk of our loaded stable of talent at RB and we barely ran it 33% of the time today and were 27+% from where GA said we would be at our best. I even think I heard GA mention 64% running a few weeks ago would be ideal and we were 31% shy of that.

If an OC can’t even come anywhere near the target game plan in his mix of run-pass calls then it should be looked at as a gross mismanagement and his job put on probation. GA allowing it to get so out of whack and nowhere near the 60-64% of runs he said this team would likely be its best at, is also gross mismanagement from a head coach. But heck, GA said himself he isn’t too big on game management. :(

    • It’s like looking at a Riley game. One sack (which was Luton’s fault, though I wasn’t enamored with RT play) and the final three or four runs to end the game are counted in that total.

Did GA lament not running more in the post-presser?

  3. I was going to say that it would be some “bitter Beaver” irony if Fresno led by McM beat CSU this season, but they don’t play each other unless they meet in the MWC championship game, which is pretty doubtful given that Fresno was 1-11 last year.

  4. Fire the whole flock of bird brains, so tired of this crap every year. Never smart to tear something down and not have the slightest idea of how to build it back up. This staff is a joke, what a bunch of morons.

  5. Dunno why we decided to go tempo from the start of the game. The defense is not at a point where it is conditioned to withstand being on the field for 35 minutes, because of depth. Get under center and chew clock.

  6. We play at Ohio State next year…I would think if the offense is this inept by the end of the year that we don’t run the ball or at least establish the run game, that we need a new OC this offseason so we don’t get embarrassed even worse by Ohio state next season. I cringe at the thought of going there now. I can see a score like the Cincinnati game back around 2005 where it was 66-3

      • Wow marketing/recruiting….that’s pretty bad. Unless Talanoa Hufanga plays defense, good luck getting the score to 30-34 by the 4th quarter. GA seriously needs to recruit the defensive line and offensive line this off season. Attrition needs to happen this season if we want a shot at winning games

          • Bitch, please.

The kid’s a 5 star and can literally go anywhere he wants. Unless he loves his mom’s Mac n cheese that much he’s not going to OSU.

          • I seriously want to know why a kid like Hufanga would want to go somewhere else. Unless he’s a total homer for someone, why would he leave home when home is in Corvallis?

You get home cooking, zero distractions (if you avoid Impulse), and you get family.

The last and the first can be considered the same if laundry is involved.

Seriously, the NFL will find players in any backwater place. Why go somewhere you are likely to take a back seat when you can be the BMOC? The Gallup kid was who I worried about most going into the game. He was pretty special. He goes to USC, and we likely don’t ever get to see that talent develop.

  7. In reading the last thread, minutes before Bradford fumbled on the horrible fly sweep call, I was saying how the Beavs should aim for a long, clock-milking drive. First call on the drive is a fly sweep. Correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s a long developing play that runs the risk of negative yardage by it’s nature and also requires precise timing. To call that at your own 10 with a new QB and a WR filling in seems incredibly stupid. The D actually did well to hold to a FG there and bail out McGiven to a degree. But what a bad call. Even if that play goes for a TD it’s an awful call at that part of the field. Really makes you wonder his mindset.

Beavs had just taken the lead, and if they were to be methodical and move down the field slowly, they could have added more points and given CSU very little time to score. That should have at least been the strategy there. These coaches make the obvious seem like rocket science.

    • Kind of like that weird screen play when they were backed up in their own territory against Weber St. and McM threw the pick six and sealed his fate with GA in his first year. Although, I guess Baldwin made that call?

      • Both equally bizarre play calls.

Also, nothing more irritating than running a sweep play to the short side of the field. I swear I get flashbacks of coaches doing that shit to me when I was young. Thanks for calling my number but giving me nowhere to go dickhead.

        • The fly sweep is only a guaranteed three to four yards if run correctly against a disciplined D. You just scrape off your outside block and take the angle to the boundary.

If, while doing this, you can plant and turn up field, that’s when chunks are eaten. What you can’t do is stop. stopping allows the pursuit to catch you or reset. You’re dead in the water if you don’t just run full tilt.

We had a bunch of dead in the water plays yesterday because we were running sideways a lot. It didn’t matter if it was the short or wide side. Why are we running off tackle against a much smaller team?

  8. Something else, in pre-game interviews I heard GA and others say the team gets along and has good chemistry without cliques, and the later added “mostly”, which implies there might be a disgruntled group. I wonder if they were McM supporters. Could be something else, but that seems the obvious reason. We’ll probably never know.

  9. A couple weeks ago I expressed concern about McGiven. The counter was that “he was the guy who called 21 straight rushes vs nike”, as if that were a sign of brilliance.

This embarrassing beat down can largely be attributed to his failure to use one of the (few) strength of this team…the RB’s. Some will say the line couldn’t open holes, but that is related to the type of run called and the formation used. NO TWO BACK SETS…….WHY??

76 offensive plays today; only 29 rushes (38 frigin’ percent !!!).

GA, who talked of 60%+ rushes, better get a handle on this OC. And while he is at it, as a “defensive guy” he better show it. I was with this guy because of the ineptness of MR, now I’m lookin’ for a “Reason to Believe”…..BTW, not the Rod Stewart kind……Tim Hardin’s much better.

  10. Aside from nall’s big run they averaged under 3 yards a carry. They had to pass out of neccesity. Its not mcgivens fault they didnt get more yardage on each run. Its not his fault players slipped fimbled or dropped wide open balls. Thats the way offense is. The beavs simply didn’t execute.

Btw this isn’t the 80s 2 back sets aren’t practical. Aside from a few misdirection plays it congests the field.

  11. Announcers – especially those who have played/coached – often point out ineptness. I’ve thought there should be someone on the bench listening so as to pass on the information. Not that the coach would listen. This would have been particularly true w CR.

We made it to a Helena Brewers game tonight – KJ does a good job as DH but no idea why Milwaukee wants him as a catcher. A high school draftee – Payton Henry – gets to catch most of the games and whereas I always felt comfortable with KJ at first base – dunno about catcher. BTW Parker Berberet has been w Milwaukee for how long? Is now trying to pitch – so he hasn’t move up as catcher after all these years . . .

I was going to yell Go Beavs when KJ came to bat but today it was too embarrassing.

Other random thought – waiting to see what Beau Baldwin does as OC at Cal.

  12. A couple of things: 1.) Saw that one coming, posted yesterday 2.) The only difference between me and Andersen is about $1,800,000 a year. What’s the old saying “nice work if you can get it.”

  13. I haven’t read prior threads so I am sorry if this has been mentioned but I feel this game was really on the d (watched the game on tape delay but missed 4th quarter to a bad recording). For the most part they were bailed out by csu offensive mistakes. The linebackers were often totally missing and our d line didn’t move beyond mediocre. If they continue to play like this, it will be a long year.

i think the offense was pressing to cover for a bad d today. O line was able to make a nice pocket but they struggled in the run blocking. Would have liked to have seen more nall and Pierce. Tyner looked nervous. Calvin looked awful. Running him on 2nd and 9 in key part of the third was awful. They immediately threw to hodgins after that and it was pick six. Going at two freshman back to back was a bad mistake in a key part of the game.

Luton wasn’t great but at times he showed flashes. I was impressed to watch him step up in the pocket and go through a progression (not often sent by OSU qb of late). 2 of the INTs were on the receiver (that said he had at least two throws before the 4th that shouldve been int but weren’t so it balances out).

Overall, this game felt poorly coached on all levels. The defense was atrocious. I had hopes of winning six to seven games this year. Maybe things will turn around but I have now reset my expectations at 3 wins. It’s going to hurt rebuilding a program again in the not too far future.

  14. I may be in the minority but is anybody else sick and tired of getting boat raced? Coaches gas up our team and appear confident and we lay an egg every time. I’m starting to lose hope in Gary to be honest and I never thought I would say that. Year 3 and we get 58 points hung on us and can’t even score 30 points on a crappy mountain west defense that got the doors blown off of them by IDAHO. Sorry for the rant but I want better for this university and for us fans.

  15. Thank goodness I DVRed and only watched the first half.

Our defense blows. Period. Hats off to Kyle White for the INT, though. Dude deserves it after moving from RB.

  16. I know there were a ton of turnovers, but “all in” 58 points is the most points given up during the GA era. And not a good look to do this against a non-Power 5 program. The juice appears to be leaking out of the carton.

      • Right now I’m torn between having them “move on” or “move out”. I’m starting to have doubts about GA’s ability to pick and hire coordinators, coaches, etc.

      • Spot on, mckalk.
The “it’s on us” bs is reminiscent of MR……..the “aw shucks” aspect may be around the corner.
Just say, “I asked our OC to shoot for 60+% rushes, he didn’t come close, he is GONE” But, GA won’t say that. Just one happy family here in the best college town in the PAC.

Giving the opponent 35 minutes of possession with a short handed, winded, over heated D won’t cut it. Ever.

        • No Mike blamed players by using the royal “We” excuse. He never said “I am to blame for xxx”, or “it’s my fault that we didn’t coach xXxX properly”. Mike passed the buck to everyone else, mostly the players.

  17. Was the team actually cocky going into the game and over-looking CSU? Gina in Olive mentions the players and staff just basically assuming there was going to be a turnaround this year, and talked about bowl games and more- Colorado style. Wow.

    • I guess they watched the Idaho bowl game and assumed incorrectly that the CSU coaching staff wouldn’t fix that debacle? I think we all thought the Beavs would be able to run at will, but that was a well-prepared, well game planned team. They stacked the box and guessed correctly that a JC QB would not be able to beat them for four quarters. Also, it was probably hard for all of us to imagine that the defense would regress instead of improve to start the season.

  18. Ft. Collins recap:
Stadium is beautiful. The outside is clad in cut stone and metals to match all of the new buildind around campus. Very impressive. Same firm that designed the stadium at Minnesota, just smaller and with less amenities. Several flaws. Both ends are open so it was really quiet. No excuses for crowd noise. Needs a small scoreboard on the opposite end as one can’t see the big one from the seats closes to the mega board. Concourses too narrow. Took the entire halftime to take a piss and get back to my seat. The piped in music was fucking intolerable. Nonstop like a god damn pro sports venue. Never heard their band.
They also have a very impressive football facility. The town is really nice with a great downtown.

  19. FOR SALE BY OWNER: 2017 Bandwagon… Seats up to 40,000 unless its past 8:00 at night or raining. Then drops to 10,000. Low miles!! Only driven once and abandoned in Ft Collins, Colorado.

Has four flat tires and a suspect transmission.

Has lingering smell of defeat that a good cleansing with tomato juice should clear up.

Ace mechanic, from Wisconsin, says he can get it running but it could take four or five years.

Will consider any offer… Call Scott B.

  20. Quick thoughts (I listened to broadcast on radio):

I wonder if the plan offensively was to score quickly to build a lead, then rely on our running game in order to grind the rest of it out? Altitude of course, would have had to been planned for; and at least in my thinking, this would allow the team to put points on the board strategically while keeping all phases of the team well rested.

The only issue with this, if this was the case and those points did not materialize, we did do a poor job after the half in making adjustments.

It sounded to me as if execution during key plays, as supposed to the team committing penalties — balls overthrown to open receivers, missing a read, no push by offensive line, dropped passes etc — heavily factored. Some of these yes, can be placed on Luton. At the same time, it was his first game/debut and after the first few offensive plays, it was clear he was anxious. The lack of a consistent running game did not provide a means to ground him sufficiently I thought, but I can’t say whether this was due to slavishly staying with the offensive plan at the beginning of the game, lack of execution on running plays, or not.

We do need to hold the defense accountable for their contribution to the loss; if the other team can average 6+ yards per attempt whether rushing or passing, there obviously were missed opportunities — it is fair to expect a high scoring game given the flight & altitude.

I fault execution by the players more than necessarily poor planning this outing; lack of proper adjustments after half time I hold to the staff.

    Positives:

    Passing to the TE!

3rd down conversion — 10/16 this was good despite the total number; would like to see this more often this season?

Long pass plays (> 20 yards) — the potential is there to complete these

QB play — not great in terms of performance, but I heard some demonstrated skills mentioned by announcers that typically I would not readily attribute to previous starters. I feel some of the problems Luton displayed may be solved by learning to be a little more patient? He seems to have a good handle on the offense.

Few penalties. Few obvious, busted plays.

    Improvements:

Better adjustments defensively & offensively after half/or key injury

Need consistency in the running game, beyond big plays

Proper execution by players, during key downs

  21. It would be nice if one of these years we could retain a little hope for the season for at least a few weeks. We didn’t even make it to week 1 this year.

Probably could have run the ball better if we could execute the hand-off in under 4 seconds. Any holes that were opened were closed by the time the RB got the ball.

Seemed like we played well in the first half. Couple plays didn’t go our way in the 2nd half. Tried to play catch up and got sloppy, made some mistakes, defense got tired and it snowballed into a blowout.

Disappointing start to the season for sure but I think we’re better than this game.

    • IMO every handoff had Luton standing like it was a statue of liberty play. No finesse at all.

GA better pull his head out and get this team & coaches going or it will be a shit show all year!

      • That’s good point, I thought the same thing. Talk about telegraphing a running play. Luton had the look of a QB who was 100% not going to pull the ball and run it. Defense reacted accordingly and stuffed the Beaver RB most of the time.

  22. Yesterday has me sold. He is not a good OC.

Just a Terribly called game one of the worst I’ve seen at any level. It’s almost as if that was Mcgiven ‘s first day on the job and he didn’t know his personelle. We made it easy on them. 45 carries is the magic number for this team if we get to that we will win most games. We averaged 36.5 last year.

    Nall – 20
    Ap/ Tyner – 20
    QB/ WR/ Johnson/ Tyler – 5 ( sacks excluded)

That’s the recipe for Beaver juice this year. Not throwing the ball 47 times. Score always dictates play calls but if Mcgiven would have been patient with the run we never fall that far behind. I thought Rick Neuhiesel did a great job calling out Mcgiven for his bull shit.

    • I couldn’t get decent audio on the stream and didn’t hear Neuhiesel. Please elucidate, if you will. Best Howard Cosell voice.

      • Hahahaha. Rick specifically questioned the decision to not run the ball 3 straight times (if needed) when we were 2nd and 3 at mid field and then in the second half repeatedly praised Mike Bobo for being patient with his play calling and called out Mcgiven for not doing the same.

        Neuhiesel was spot on yesterday.

        • Neuhiesel is good. People get on him (usually if he says something negative about their team), but he knows what he’s talking about during telecasts. He’s a better telecaster than coach, imo. And yes, he (rightfulyl) called out our staff.

  23. Also, I don’t understand this historic business of going on the road against good non-power 5 teams and getting their asses kicked? They continue to just ask for it. Just say no and get another home game against a pushover. It’s the reality of the college football business. There are a lot of suspect Power 5 teams who make bowl games because they schedule “properly” to get to 6-6. The Beavs have tried and failed doing it their way. Scott Barnes are you listening?

    • They’re scheduling like a mid-major, paycheck games. “Hey, a powerhouse of the Rockies is opening their brand new stadium, said they want an easy win. Let’s go!” And, I can’t stand the games on the road at Michigan and Ohio State, with no return trip. Terrible job by the AD. Utah got a return trip from Michigan a couple seasons ago. They probably scheduled it just after entering the Pac 12, too.

  24. Usually I just read this site… But yesterday’s game warrants a first comment. All the focus on whether Luton is good or not is misguided.. He performed about how you would expect in his first game.. He really only threw one meaningful pick (and yes, it was a killer) but the other two were just ehh… One was a deep ball that the WR fell down on, basically ended up being a 30 yard punt.. The last pick was in garbage time..

He was wild with some throws but I remember prior OSU QBs throwing some bad balls too.. I have read a few people say we would have won this game with McM or that it would have been close.. I don’t buy that at all.. If the coaches asked McM to throw 47 passes compared to 28 runs it would have been just as ugly.. Which brings me to the point..

WTF kind of game plan was that?! Even in the first half when the game was close the Beavers were passing the ball more than running it.. Which makes ZERO sense.. On the road, new stadium, jacked up opponent, new QB, thin defense, at altitude and you want to go no huddle, chuck the ball around, and try and win a track meet?!? The plan installed to win this game, with a whole off-season to prepare, was mind numbing.. We can try to blame the QB all we want, but if the plan in place does NOTHING to help the QB?

You can say, “well the running game, excluding the long TD run, wasn’t doing much”.. That’s why you stick with the run early, not abandon it, so the defense wears down and by the second half those 2-3 yard runs become 6-8 yard runs..

You would have thought we established that formula at the end of last season.. Add a QB with a big arm to take the top off the defense with play action passes after the defense is gassed and you have an identity.. Instead it looked like we want Luton to be the next Aaron Rodgers..

Any debate outside of “WTF kind of game plan was that” is a waste of breathe..

  25. My take on this is that the Beavs were out-prepared and out-coached. The Utah State loyalty (nepotism?) has always bothered me. The Baldwin situation has always bugged me. He seems to have had a very short leash… how long is McGiven’s? OSU was supposed to have a new “passing coordiinator” but the passing offense looked pedestrian. Did it seem to you guys that even the up-the-middle running plays took too long to develop? Are the quarterback/RB supposed to stand there both holding the ball for 2 second?

Because of the coaching, I will give Luton a pass on this game and not form an opinion from a sample space of N=1. Coaching (prep and in-game adjustments) does not get a pass. The coaching staff needs to take a long hard look at itself.

In all this negativity, I will contribute a few positives
    (1) Togiai will be star.
    (2) I thought Villamin played pretty well.
    (3) Nall played well too. The ability to get 3 yards while being swarmed is a positive that is overlooked. He also showed he can catch. That wheel route was great. More of that, please.

Credit to the CSU coaching staff. They made adjustments which apparently OSU was incapable of making. That Gallup dude will play on Sunday. He made the Beavs’ secondary look like high-school kids. CSU QB showed a lot of moxie. They’re a good, well-coached team.

  26. I think you are asking for them to call more running plays?
Problem isn’t with the play calling its with the players they are playing. They couldn’t run the ball effectively the entire game. averaged 2 yds per carry once you take the Nall 75 yd TD run. The OL didn’t make any holes except one time. Thought Pass blocking was good. Luton looks like the real deal needs some more experience, had a couple brain farts, but also had some really nice throws.

The reason we lost yesterday and will lose the rest of this season is the Defensive front 7 was DOMINATED by a Group 5 team. Out of shape , slow, and out of alignment. Clune’s defense doesn’t impress at all. The speed on defense is sub par, especially sideline to sideline. We had no pursuit speed. I don’t think we should be running a 3-4 we couldn’t fill any of their run gaps. Elu goes out and gets injured first quarter, probably because he is 30 lbs overweight. We have no depth on the DL. We need Craig Evans bad, and now. GA needs to hit the JC ranks hard again and bring in 3 or 4 DL that can provide some help. Now the linebackers…Manase played a horrible game, missing tackles and out of position. Now I will give the Senior the benefit of the doubt that he knows what he is doing, but he at least didn’t get the rest of the team in position to make plays. Not enough communication out. You can’t have your SS safety leading your team in tackles.

The defense showed it wasn’t going to be able to stop their offense and look like they won’t be able to stop many teams this year. Its going to be a long season.

  27. Some of Gallup success is on Clune tho too. 5-6 of his grabs were quick bubble screens. To me he’s a guy you want to press with a safety in bracket coverage all day long. Instead we let him get the ball in his hands without a fight 6 times by my count. Just poor game planning on both sides of the ball by this staff.

  28. If I’m not mistaken one of the practice reports stated that the coaches shuffled the line around to emphasize pass protection. Seems like maybe they should shuffle back for run blocking.

    • The thinking could have gone something like this: No matter who we put in there we can’t run block worth a fuck so let’s go with the guys who can at least pass block.

  29. After watching the game again I think Luton over trusts his arm probably because of JC. I think he will be very solid by mid season and the offense will figure it out (hopefully).Defense on the other hand…

  30. I think its a little ridiculous to call Luton the wrong QB based on yesterday. Of course it forces others to prove something impossible (That MM wouldn’t have helped yesterday either) so its a nice way to argue a position no one can actually push back on.

The defense was the problem yesterday, yes I do not like the offensive philosophy (this is why I advocated for an offensive coordinator as head coach) but when your head guy is a defensive coach your defense shouldn’t look like a division 2 defense facing Alabama in November when you are playing Colorado State.

I am far more concerned with the shit show that is the defense than I am Luton, McGiven, or the offense in general.

  31. If Luton doesn’t force intermediate and longer throws into tight spots there is reason to hope he can better be a better game manager which, sorry GA, is what the QB position is all about.

This defense though appears to have very little hope. Not enough speed, shitty communication, too much confusion and not good at containing the edge.

The secondary also needs work. They could be in decent position bit still not there hands in the way of the opponents hands to nit alkow the completion. One time the guy just had to give a fee more inches or turn around bu instead got the PI for too much contact at body level at key moment with no look. The other on the deep ball on 3rd and long our guy just needed to get his hands up when it loiked like the receiver was ready to catch and do a better job of preventing it from getting in there as his position was good enough to do that.

I expect this defense to struggle for the vast majority of the season except against PSU. Another home game or two we may win despite of the D, but they will be a big liability and make ot hard worl for our offense tp score more points than they allow.

Offense thus has to play to strengths. Run atleast 60% of the time. Even if down 10-13 this holds true until the final 10 minutes of the game as breaking the gameplan to bwcomw pass happt only increases the odds of our deficit becoming larger. Did you notice how CSU lead went quickly from 4 to 20+ points as we got ever more infatuated with the pass????

Beavs will beat PSU 41-20 or maybe 38-17 I suspect but gsne is next to meaningless besides some prep for Minnesota. That game will tell us if Oregon State will maybe win anothee Pac-12 game this year besides Cal.

Don’t see more than 4 wins this year if defense doesn’t improve fast and sadly I expect only very slight improvement from this D over the course of the season. 3 wins is just as likely as 4 wins now if GA doesn’t tighten things up in a hurry. 5 wins is only a 10-12% likelihood now IMO. Would require beating Minnesota but even then 4 wins is still most likely where team will cap this year. Pretty sad.

    • I didn’t see the 3rd interception but neither of the first 2 was because he “forced a ball into a tight window”

One was the receiver falling down on a deep shot and the other was a deflected pass to a wide open receiver (granted, it was a poor throw but it wasn’t a tight window).

      • Point remains. You have to be focused and make sure you can throw something accurate only your guy can catch. The throw to Hodgins may have only been a 9 or so yard throw but was too fast, a bit behind and a yard high. Things were somewhat congested in front of Hodgins. In general, Luton has to be a methodic game manager that values possession and sustaining drives in that order. Let’s not forgeylt he came close to having a couple more picks and tes it was because a defender was in as good as a position as our guy to make a play on the ball. Those are throws you need to be careful of and understand the game-changing implications if off by very much. If the margin of error is too small then may be an unwise football decision for the team in the overarching game management side of things that decides games.

        • Luton threw into traffic several times and got away with picks…
He should have had at least 4 (one was very easy and the CSU guys all around it but dropped it). A few others were on the fringe but likely made by a better secondary.

          • You could say the same for CSU QB when the beavers defender dropped a for sure interception on a forced flip toward the middle of the field at the goal line. He had an ill advised throw too. So they’re QB wasn’t flawless either. Grant it, he managed the game better than any Oregon State QB in the GA era. We can’t get so hung up on QB play that caused the loss or that we don’t have this or we don’t have that. The players came out flat and besides Nall, Togiai and the starting seniors, no one one came out tearing to go win a fight. They came out to run on a field and they played like it was a practice not a game. I am understanding what coaches mean by you play games by how you practice. If you don’t practice with fire, how are you supposed to know how to play a game with fire?

        • Look, I’m just not gonna agree with this “game manager” thing. Sometimes you need a QB that can make big plays. To win yesterday they were gonna need 50 points to win yesterday. A “game manager” isn’t gonna get you that.

Luton may not be the answer (he probably isn’t and trust me I have no faith in this coaching staffs ability to find a QB) but a “game manager” definitely isn’t the answer either.

I’d rather have a risk taker at QB in such a game. Sure, maybe a “game manager” loses 52-38 instead but its still a loss.

          • If you manage a game well then 5 or 6 throws will present themselves for nice gains. Think you get 12-15+ of these moments is gunslinging it and full of trouble as we saw. Take away the 20-27 points CSU got off turnovers and Beavs probably win. That is the management. Do you not recall the Fiesta Beavs? That team ran 63% of the time but still had 3-4 great passes a game for chunk plays. Doesn’t take much more than that for the optimal ability to manage the game and its moments for a win. Beavs D needs to stay off the field awhile for rest and Beavs offense needs to sustain drives with plenty of runs and some timely throws to maintain possession, chew clock and keep opposing offenses off the field longer. Nall rarely fumbles. Same with Pierce and hopefully with Johnson and Tyner. Other defenses have a much higher chance for interceptions and turnovers in general when you pass more than you throw. We weren’t even close yesterday to what this team should be doing. Too much throwing also opens up multiple sacks and any sack more often than not will stop a drive on that series. Teams like USC, UW, Stanford, etc will sack us much more.

Line needs to know that getting 3-5 yards a run is a heavy part of their job and get in the habit and Nall and Pierce need to have belief in them. Then we can figure out a couple ways for Tyner to get touches or open in space. Defenses will then be so busy trying to limit these 3, 4 and 5 yard runs that we are producing first downs with that some good opportunities for 15-20 yard strikes in the air will present themselves on their own without us looking for something, whether it was there or not, nearly every set of downs like we saw against CSU.

          • AndersenMustProveIt, everything you said could have been done with Luton. He would be much more dangerous on those throws that take the top off the defense, and the WRs would be even more open. Who should be the starting QB is a separate issue from the bone-headed play-calling. The only relationship is McG thinks Luton gives him a license to go AirBeav.

    • Not sure you understand, running the 60% of the time at 2yds per carry, gets you a lot of 3 and outs. The passing game was at the very least moving the chains, the third quarter they just didn’t do anything, the offensive numbers were decent, but need the OL to run block a whole lot better, got no push at all. Who on the OL played well?

      • Bullshit. Riley said the same thing. You got to establish it more and do it more than 1 down a series to know. Tyner couldn’t get started but only had 4 tries. They do need to speed up their handoffs. Pierce averaged nearly 5 yards a carry on 8 carries. He appears like should be our #2 back. Tyker had no business being called on a pivotal series on 2nd and 9. Maybe on 1st down. Johnson averaged 6 yards a carry at TCU. Unless our line absolutely sucks no reason he can’t be something like Nall and churn and fight for a few yards on most plays. Playcalling could have been run Pierce on 1st for 4.5 yards, then Nall on 2nd for 4 more, tgen you have 3rd and 1.5 with the playbook wide open. We didn’t see that. Could also be Nall for 4 on 1st, Pierce for 4.5 on 2nd and again playbook wide open on 3rd down.

Tyner was hurting things because with Jake’s late handoffs we was only getting 1 yard sometimes and then going incomplete pass on 2nd would but Beavers in a 3rd and 9 and forced to pass. Each run it is critical to pick up atleast 3 yards and tgat is why north-south running is a must. Do that and fall forward and you usually have 3 or more.

Beavs right now look like they need quick handoffs to Nall, Pierce and perhaps Johnson before Tyner as it currently is. Once those guys open some holes then Tyner may he more effective assuming we can hand it off quicker and he hits the hole and makes maybe one cut.

Seen what happens with too much passing a hundred times already though. It VERY RARELY turns out good. More than anything with passing you just need 3-4 key moments that complement the established run game and allow some chunk yardage or easier scores when you have them looking for the run. Pass too often and these key moments turn into interception turnovers instead of 7 and a 14 point swing in the wrong direction that gives the win to your opponent.

  32. That Luton INT was happening whether the WR fell or not. Ball was 10 yards beyond any WR and right to the DB who looked like he was fielding a punt. CSU also dropped 1 or 2 easy INTs earlier in the game. Could have been 4 or 5 easily.

    • I get it, you hate Luton and have to be right. Good for you. But no, that deep ball was NOT 10 yards over his head if the receiver hadn’t fell. Sorry, but sometimes you are in fact wrong.

      • Show me the reply. I remember the WR trying to accelerate to catch a ball way over his head and tripping in the process. And the announcers then commenting how it was nowhere close anyway. I guess they’re wrong, too, because you love Luton and fell for his arm, just like you fell for the hurdle?

Also, funny how you want to remove an INT because a WR tripped, yet you don’t want to remove a TD where the CSU defender tripped and busted the coverage.

        • I have no love for Luton, I’m not the coach. I have seen 1 scrimmage and yesterday. I have no clue beyond that.

I don’t care what the announcers said. I have my own eyes. In my view had the receiver not fallen the defender isn’t able to catch the ball like a punt because if it was overthrown it was only by a few yards (not 10). Never said, it would have been a TD, a perfect throw, or not an interception. Just that it wasn’t “10 yards over his head” because it wasn’t.

And, I didn’t “fall for the hurdle” but keep repeating that narrative. I was quite clear even than that I liked starting Collins because it was a gamble in a rebuilding year to get a guy to fit what Andersen claimed he wanted to do (spread option based offense). And in that context, it remains the right risk. Not every risk pays off but being afraid to even take a risk NEVER works. Of course they turned out to not really even be committed to such an offense.

And, FYI, I didn’t remove the interception. Notice my post, I said Luton wasn’t throwing into a tight window on that interception. At no point did I say “that interception doesn’t count” and I haven’t said a word about the TD throws so you have no basis for what you think my opinion on those are.

          Nice try.

          • To be frank, I liked MM probably as much as you. I just find your narrative that is basically “MM would solve everything and Luton is garbage” ridiculous.

This team loses yesterday with Brady at QB. The defense was pathetic.

        • I think you are missing the point of most.. You want to cling to the QB decision when the reality is it doesn’t make a shit bit of difference who the QB is if the play calling is awful and the defense can’t stop anything..

You argue that the defense didn’t give up all 58 points.. True.. But… They still gave up 525 yards to a MW conference team despite the “benefit” of only having to defend short fields because of some turnovers.. My point being, yes the offense turned it over, but the defense still stopped nothing.. Excluding holding CSU to a field goal after the Bradford fumble and the pick six.. That’s 10 points.. The defense still was in position to defend the other 48 points and umm they didn’t..

The only excuse the defense has is the offensive play calling was so bad they were on the field the whole game.. Slick Rick was on TOP the whole broadcast and he was spot on..

I agree with many posts.. The fact that GA is a “defense” guy and our defense is so terrible is a bit alarming.. and the fact that GA is a “defense” guy and would allow HIS assistants to execute an offensive game plan that was 100% a detriment to playing quality defense is even more alarming..

It feels like the team has no idea what it wants to be.. There’s no identity.. There’s no “this is who we are”.. It felt like we found that at the end of last year and we obviously did not..

An incredibly disappointing start to the season..

          • It certainly does matter when the offense was responsible for 20 points off turnovers. 27 by my count, but I’ll defer to revbeav who said 20.

CSU was a top offense last year, averaging around 35 points, and many predict them to be one of the top 10 offenses this year. That’s what you don’t understand and didn’t understand going into the game. Beaver fans were arrogant and looking at the “lower conference”. The reality is we’d finish in the middle of those conferences, and there is little separate between conferences in the modern game.

CSU will likely average 40 points per game this year, if not more.

If our offense doesn’t spot them 20, it’s an entirely different game. How? We’ll never know, but it doesn’t look like it did on the scoreboard or the defensive stats. The D will be good the next two weeks. The O? Probably look pretty good. I think we beat PSU and MN. People will forget about this D performance because we’ll stop those teams. Again, CSU is a top 10 National offense and our O spotted them 20 points and field position. Wrap your head around that.

        • You say the CB tripped…. look again dingus, it was a double move and Hernandez burnt him LOL. anything you can do to rip on OSU. you sure you’re a beaver fan?

        • Hernandez was in front of the guy who caught it. How would it have been 8 feet over his head if he would not have tripped? If anything Timmy would have had to slow down to catch it.

          • Did you watch same the video clip?
Hernandez was never ahead of him. I’m not even convinced the CSU defender tripped him. He’s behind the defender at the 20, escapes the camera angle for a split second and then is seen tripping near the 10 with the defender still in front.
Only way Hernandez was ever in front of the defender is if he pulled a flash gordon between the 20 and 10 and ran a few circles around the DB before falling.

          • The bigger question is why is he throwing into double coverage with Timmy Hernandez?

            A. Obviously you don’t throw into double coverage.
            B. Hernandez is not a game changing/deep threat.

Even if you want to say the ball was on the money, at best Hernandez knocks it from 2 defenders.
What the Luton apologists are missing is the bigger question of that decision, which is indefensible. It’s the “gunslinger” in action right there. We have a guy who watched Luton play in-person, several games at JC and said he did this stuff all the time and nothing has changed.

          • What is your point, that this play impacted the outcome of the game and Luton sucks? The defense still gave up a 64 yard drive following the int and only stopped CSU 3 times all game.

        • If you play the video in slow motion it shows Hernandez was step for step with the DB prior to falling and it was a ball that he would have been able to make a play on, not an 8 or 9 foot overthrow. Granted, the DB had inside position but Bradford and Togia both made catches on similar balls by out jumping the defender at other points in this game. Regardless, a 12 play 64 yard scoring drive followed the INT, which falls on the shoulders of the defense. Luton would have had to play a perfect game to overcome the performance of the defense to win this game. Oregon State did not stop CSU on a single possession in the 2nd half.

    • I agree with Jim Wilson, the turnovers didn’t affect the game, they only effected the winning margin.

They will need to out gun everybody they play this year. The defense doesn’t look like it will be stopping anybody, so they need to put up a ton of points. This game was over when we had 345 total offense to their 255 and were still behind at halftime.

      • CSU has a top offense, so I’m not sure I agree with you or Jim Wilson yet until we see them vs lesser offenses. A lot of those points and yards came because the O put them in bad position, heat, altitude, fatigue from the start (bad travel schedule).

D got pressure on the QB a decent amount. Ran out of gas fast. I’d be most worried about conditioning rather than skill.

CSU flat out has a great offense and many of us tried to warn the arrogant Beaver fan of that. A lot of it is that.

      • Anyone talked about our punter yet? Stats indicate short fields for the rams, and I heard the announcers bag the first punt anyway. How we’re the rest?

        • Meh, he was ok, i think 1 inside the 20, plus the muff, something like a 38 yard average but he had 2 that were short field position punts that mess with that average.

  33. From Benny’s House forum:

“Riley had success at OSU, Andersen hasn’t. Until he does there is no comparison between Andersen and coaches like Riley or Erickson. Until Andersen actually wins some games we should stick to comparing him only to Pettibone, Kragthorpe, Avezzano, or Fertig.”

    Truth hurts.

    • Thank you for including me in your list of notable OSU coaching greats!! Ordinarily I would be sending you some OSU memorabilia but I’m totally cleaned out. Susy is thrilled, now we can park her car in the garage.

Some guy named Jack came by and bought every item I had. Strange dude… kinda of tool.

  34. “We got beat badly — badly,” Andersen said. “There are a lot of concerns when you get beat like that. It’s unchartered waters for me.”

Did he forget about the beat down Ohio state gave him already?

  35. Angry you keep referencing the guy who saw Luton play JC ball. Luton threw for 40 td’s, 15 int’s and over 3000 yards in JC ball. What point are you proving when last year our QB play produced 13 tds, 11 int’s and 2000 yards passing. Do you think the passing game last year was effective enough to open up the run? I didn’t see it that way. I don’t want to see 3 picks a game but at least we can convert on 3rd and 5 this year when we rarely did last year.

  36. If anyone can post a link to stats for the game where it’s broken down by quarter please post that link. The reason I’m asking is I’d like to see the number of carries and yards gained for the last two quarters. Some folks are saying by running the ball the Beavs would have worn them down. It seemed to me their run D improved as the game went on.

Also, for the folks who are saying the Beavs should have concentrated on running how many 3 and outs would the O have racked up in the first half?

Imo the Beavs passed because they had to pass. They ran all those wide running plays because the OL couldn’t consistently open holes up the middle.

My recollection is all too often the CSU was in the Beav’s backfield when they shouldn’t have been. Imo currently this OL is like last year’s OL in the early season. I’m sure Garretson remembers last year’s early season OL.

For me the big question is are there OL players on the team who can give the same kind of performance last year’s line gave once the changes were made? I’m hoping there are but I’m also doubtful.

    Go Beavs

      • Take out the 75 yard run by Nall and it was 8 attempts for 21 yards in the second quarter. Blocking needs to be better executed and when you get smashed in the mouth, you need to have a better reaction than, ‘sh!t, they’re kicking my ass!’ We do lack the fire in our belly or as a former OL coach once told me, get your p!ss hot! If you don’t play with an intensity on the OL or you can’t get angry or the adrenaline pumping, then you deserve to ride some pine.

        • Without those 8 carries for 21 yards (and the 9 for 29 in the 1st), Nall doesn’t get the one for 75. It’s all relative.

More relative is that we ran 18 times in the first half versus 31 pass attempts. Sure, about 5 of those came in what was a decently managed two-minute drill. But we voluntarily left the ground game when it started to look like it was working for us. Their D line got to run downhill when they should have been bowing backward and huffing and puffing. If you don’t make them tired, why should they be tired?

  37. There are 5 factors as to why this game was a loss:

    1) we were playing against a senior QB and a better offensive coordinator match up than our defensive coordinator
    2) we started an unknown QB in a brand new system and allowed him to let loose
    3) we know Nall can run, but the utilization of the other backs was poor in play calls and substitutions
    4) we came out saying our punting needs to be a weapon(sounds like a losing team mentality conceiving the fact you will be punting around the middle of the field consistently, which we did)
    5) we have a lot of inexperienced players at key positions and especially at the DL spot.

IMHomerO I feel the coaches used the game plan we could have gotten away with against PSU, not CSU. Let Luton loose against PSU when we have the early lead to get him comfortable with ‘gunslinging’ it around the field. Going up against a team that you’re unfamiliar with, in their new house/castle where they will do whatever it takes to defend it, altitude, temperatures reaching 117 degrees on the field, and you have nothing to lose but everything to gain mentality.

It appears the coaching staff wanted to see where our passing game really is because they already know where the run game is/could be. So they used this game as a ‘let’s see where we lie as a whole. Can we connect on deep passes, which receivers are in the right WR positions and who came ready to play. I’d say from my vantage point these WR/TE came ready to play:

    Togiai
    Villamin
    Hodgins
    Hawkins

I also didn’t realize we have like 3 TE that are R-FR, Soph, and a JR all 6’4″/6’5″. Why not have a double TE set with one WR and two RB set? Or a jumbo package like Stanford? That to me would help get togiai open for play action and the run game wouldn’t get stuffed at the line when we know they stack the box anyway! We also have 3 FR TE as well so 6 TE all together. It’s our deepest position next to WR and RB

  38. The Beavers played hard you guys. Not like they just flat weren’t trying out there. That’s all I’m saying.

No need to pile on. Gary Andersen is not used to this. Give him some time to adjust to the pac12 and watch out. He’s just getting started now.

    • Many guys showed up. Thankful villamin was one. Nice int Kyle white, way to take your lumps and make something happen. Hopefully csu is really as good as they looked and they hang 500 yards on cu too. Maybe the defense is a few tweaks away from congealing. Maybe the offense will hold onto the ball. We’ll find out next week.

    • Well JUCO Jerry couldn’t adjust to the BIG. He was over his head with the media. He tried to go against how the program was built at Wisconsin. He recruited players who couldn’t academically qualify and he got frustrated with that. His OL recruiting left us with little depth the two years after he left. I see GA, a.k.a. CBNF is repeating history by bringing in his own JUCO QB to replace the established starter. One big reason Alvarez hired CBNF was his promise to keep the program as a physical team that ran the ball and played good to great defense. He even had a plan that printed out like a business plan that Alvarez liked. When CBNF introduced spread elements, many fans were wondering what was happening. As for the 59-0 by Ohio State, you could tell CBNF had checked out and the staff was in limbo. Players remarked the week before the championship game that practices were lethargic and CBNF was disengaged. A few days after the championship game he was your new head coach. Maybe he can pull his head out of his ass and turn things around but I would bet against on how over his head he was in the BIGH

  39. I’m not worried about the D at all. CSU would have put up 400 on Ohio State, and we were gassed for many reasons. Will be fine moving forward. Much more concerned about the QB and OC, obviously.

Better run it a lot the next few games b/c that’s the only way both those bozos are going to look good.

    • Tough to win any game when you give up 500+ yards of offense. I don’t care who you are or what kind of shape you’re in.

    • The D is most concerning Angry. Even with my moniker. Luton needs to be a better game manager as in see the big picture and ebb and flow and utter importance of limiting turnovers, but the D right now looks very suspect and is more likely to only have small improvement from game to game.

Gotta get the next 2 games. Minnesota game should still be a high energy raucous affair. Beavs can work with 2-1 but that is a must for any very realistic chance at 5 wins this year.

Saying not worried about D at all would put you in a tiny minority. Pretty sure 90 to 95 percent of Beaver Nation is most concerned with the D. Most feel that the offense has more hope that it will find itself.

McGiven definitely has to establish the run game and not get tricked into being so pass happy again. If you are concerned that he may be tempted too much by flashes from Luton then I get that concern but all that is mostly needed on offense is smarter playcalling. The defense has a tall hill to climb.

      • I’m not concerned about the D unless there are injuries at thin positions/DL. Then I’m worried yeah. CSU is a very good offense and we weren’t ready for time zone or altitude. Pre game we looked lethargic.

    • Is the team on the right trajectory for where they should be in year 3 of this staff? Post Civil War I would have said yes but yesterday seemed a major step away from the tough, physical team we’ve heard GA preach about. The O looks like they have talent but the coaches don’t know how to put the pieces together and on defense players were reportedly having communication issues and not hustling. I agree with you that CSU is much better than they are given credit for but in year 3 shouldn’t we expect the game to be more competitive?

  40. Next weekend’s games will reveal much more than this game. Do we make PSU look like a Big Sky team playing a PAC-12 team? Does CSU rack up 500 yds and beat CU? If yes to both of these then we have hope for the season. But if we barely squeak out a win and CU clobbers CSU, well then, make plans to enjoy the beautiful Oregon Fall weekends doing something a lot less frustrating.

  41. He was on crutches very late in the game, so I’m thinking he doesn’t play this week. Maybe use the twater to twit Kevin Hampton about asking that question in the next press conference? And about if Evans is showing up.

  42. Very Riley like quote in that GT story from GA. Almost sounds like he is not an active part of the team or actually the head coach or something:

““There was some nice, wide open (receivers). The passing game was going pretty good with guys open in the field so that kind of led us to maybe want to throw it a little bit more or led (offensive coordinator) Kevin (McGiven) to want to throw it a little bit more. So I thought it was a little bit much but not for the way they were playing defense and the guys were running up and down the field.”

If that’s my team Mcgiven would have been pulled a side at halftime and asked why the f we have thrown the ball 31 times so far . When we talked ( assuming they spoke a few times in the off season) about being a 60% run offense. Surprised at the passiveness (pun intended)

  43. Told you guys CSU was legit. Bowl games are always a poor indication of a team. Motivation and other factors come into play. Better hope they beat CU soundly.

First time I have serious doubts about the direction of the team. GA tore things down to the studs and now the construction looks shoddy. This was like an opener with MR.

    • GA is reckless. There’s a fine line between measured aggression and recklessness.

I’m clinging to faith in him. I think we’ll get 2 wins the next 2 weeks and that will help.

  44. We looked better offensively than when we played against Michigan! The WR were getting open in the first quarter, but then CSU adjusted by adding pressure to Luton. If we hold PSU to 6 points and we win by 40, what will that tell us? Nothing at this point. We just need to play a complete sound game when it comes to offense and defense. I want to see fire and mayhem on defense. I want to see us be able to run the ball on Saturday to open the pass game. I’m fine with opening with a pass instead of a run like we did against CSU as long as it’s a completion and positive yards. We don’t need a home run ball right away. Work on methodical drives and big plays will open up. That should be the game plan every game

  45. Portland State has a true freshman mobile QB who Nigel Burton was warning Oregon State about this morning. Apparently he looks like a grown man despite being 18.

  46. I saw comments in a previous thread that GA was happy with the strength of this team. Said they look the part of a D1 “big boy” football team. I’m wondering if GA actually knows what that looks like. What I do like about GA is he does not take performances like that lightly. But my only concern is he seems very reactive. He seems like the kind of guy who would try to make drastic changes after a game like that rather than small, calculated changes. I guess we shall see.

  47. Well, finally made it around to watching the game last night. Glad I didn’t waste one of our few remaining sunny Saturdays on that debacle. Throughout the first 2.5 quarters, I felt that McM would have won us that game. But I changed my mind later on…no QB would have won that game with the pathetic defense. I’ve never seen so many miscues in the secondary or soft outside contain from a 4-3 or 3-4 defense. I guess I envisioned a strong cover 2 with a couple of beast safeties. We played more of a cover 0.

On the plus side, it looks like my Saturdays will remain free for fall chinook and elk hunting.

  48. I knew this game was a potential loss. Colorado State, I think, you’re going to see at the top of the Mountain West and in discussion for the Group of 5 NYD Bowl Game at the end of the year. What I am chiefly disappointed in, is the WAY it was lost. The first half looked fairly promising. This team came out of the second half completely flat, didn’t stick with what was working, and when things snowballed, it looked like everybody started to panic. Altitude and heat contributed to the meltdown, sure, but they shouldn’t be major reasons for the poor performance.

Big picture: Oregon State lost their mulligan. They had seven games on the schedule that fell into the winnable category, and Colorado State was one of them. They must sweep Portland State, Minnesota, Colorado, California, Arizona and Arizona State if they want to get to their goal of a bowl game. I don’t foresee a whole lot of optimism if you’re staring at having to win any of the other five.

If OSU played its game Saturday they should have easily at least kept it within a field goal at worst. But they didn’t. And now we’re looking off the cliff edge again.

  49. Hindsight is 20/20, but it sure would have been nice to work out the kinks against PSU.
Rescheduling this game was a major strategic error. Buzz kill and confidence killer for the season.

  50. I also recall looking at a pass play by CSU and one of the OSU LB came in fast and hard, and one of the OL just wrapped up the LB and stopped him dead in his tracks and held him there for a few seconds. Hard to get a pass rush when you’re being held and the refs aren’t calling it. Also, I imagine with the no TD call, the team was either deflated rather than pissed off based on how they performed and felt like they were getting hosed no matter what they did. Also saw a few no calls in regards to PI. I know you can’t blame the refs, but I blame the players and coaches for not trying to get themselves pissed off that they are ‘the better team’ and feel ‘we should be winning this game’ and come out with aggression. Instead we chose to roll over and give up/McGivin. Don’t McGivin to pier pressure.

  51. 1) Why are we running a hurry up no huddle offense with a horrible and very thin Defense? This is basic strategy you see in many sports. SLOW IT DOWN GIVE YOUR DEFENSE MAXIMUM REST AND PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTH WHICH IS THE RUN GAME AND OUR TIGHT END.

    2) HOW CAN YOU CALL THAT OUT TO VILLAMIN ON 3RD&4 WHEN IT OBVIOUS TWO DOWN TERRITORY. RUN ON 3RD DOWN AND THEN MOST LIKELY AGAIN ON 4TH….ALSO EVER ATTEMPTING A 52 YARD FG EVEN AT ELEVATION IS ABSURD, ESPECIALLY WITH A HORRIBLE UNPROVEN YOUNG KICKER. PUNTING WOULD BE >>>> THERE.

    3) Lastly i just cannot keep living with these clock management blunders. How has no one brought up the situation with 1:45 to go in 1st half and we have 3 TOs. GA doesn’t think to use ONE???? I WAS YELLING FOR THIS IN REAL TIME. You give your defense a breather to prep for 3rd and 1 1/2 PLUS you save time for your own 2 minute drill (luckily they were dumb enough to not even run out the clock, they should have ran it all the way to 1 and called their own TO if they weren’t brain dead as well) Inexcusable

    • Also, calling for a 52 yard FG attempt after a previous attempt was blocked….a longer kick is likely to have an initial, low trajectory and be susceptible to blocking.

Yes, we were yelling for a timeout at the end of the half too – let the defense get some rest and save some time for your own team….

    • “HORRIBLE UNPROVEN KICKER”

I agree with most of the above, but not sure how Choukair is a horrible unproven kicker. I haven’t seen him miss a FG or PAT except for the 52 yarder(which was on the wrong side of the field so he was kicking across his body. Again, why kick that?)
Choukair nailed every kick in the scrimmages this summer including some 50+ yarders.

      • fair enough… i dont know much about him so i admit to speaking uninformed… but i do know practice is a lot different then on the road in game situation!

        Go Beavs!
