Moving on to Washington

This should be an easy win, right? I mean Gary Andersen says he’s trying harder than ever, and Ed Ray promised teams would regret coming to our house.

Oh wait…

Since GA will get at least a 4th year, we’ll be left watching a blowout while pondering who the next head coach will be. If it’s anyone desirable, they won’t be available next year. Sure, it’s still possible GA turns things around if the old dog learns new tricks (sound familiar?) and gets over the stubbornness, or we keep receiving divine intervention (e.g. Luton going down is the football gods doing Andersen’s job for him). Upgrades via attrition or injury are the worst types; they are embarrassing in that they highlight the cluelessness of the coaches. I do like that GA is still keeping his head high, at least verbally, and saying all the right things. He deserves any pain he is in for his stubbornness. Does he learn from his player analysis/judgement errors? That’s a question the media should be asking. It’s the only important question right now.

Garretson might be in over his head versus this tough stretch of opponents, but what I like about him is (a) the team seems to rally around him more than Luton, (b) he runs, and (c) he has moxie (d) he’s more of a game manager. He’s a backup QB at best, but so we Luton, and I like DG more out of those two choices. It’s a shame he gets this tough part of the schedule. Watch Luton miss this difficult stretch then return for the easy back half, do well, and people become convinced he’s the answer (something they didn’t grant to McM versus the easier opponents). Ah, so much bias and hate.

Regarding this game, obviously we lose, and the only interesting story is to see if Garretson is better than Luton and GA messed up the QB’s again. Seeing how the team rallys around Garretson will be interesting, too. I’ve watched some Washington — solid team with a coach who knows exactly what he’s doing. Beavs never seem to be the team that brings in a backup QB who goes all-world and pulls an upset (in fact, that always happens against us). It’s hard to imagine any situation where this turns out well.

  1. I’m dreading this game, shits gonna be brutal.

In other news, so much for wanting an Adidas sponsorship as a “more ethical” alternative to Nike.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/sports/wp/2017/09/26/justice-department-charges-college-basketball-coaches-with-accepting-bribes-in-corruption-case/

“Coaches at Auburn, Oklahoma State, Arizona and Southern California were all accused of accepting bribes in exchange for offering to steer players to preferred financial advisers, business managers and agents. A top Adidas executive and two associates were accused of arranging illicit payments for high school stars and their families to secure athlete commitments to Adidas-sponsored schools. And two other unnamed universities — whose descriptions in indictments match Louisville and Miami — were implicated as landing top basketball recruits thanks to the illicit payments outlined in indictments unsealed Tuesday.”

    • Auburn = UnderArmor
      OkState= Nike
      Arizona = Nike
      USC = Nike
Plus, one of those Adidas Execs recently came to Adidas from Nike.

I don’t think this will all boil down to an Adidas issue. They were just the low hanging fruit so far.

      • >I don’t think this will all boil down to an Adidas issue. They were just the low hanging fruit so far.

Definitely. And I’d be willing to bet U of Nike is a big part of this.

Suddenly they’re beating out all these other teams who have been implicated in this scandal for top recruits? Hmm.

        Louis King – Louisville

        Troy Brown- Louisville, Arizona

Miles Norris – Arizona, Auburn, USC

        MJ Cage – Arizona, USC

Brian Bowen – heavily recruited by Oregon, takes more money to go to Louisville.

Bol Bol, one of the top 2018 recruits, visiting Arizona, USC, UCLA, Kentucky and…Oregon? One of those things is not like the others.

        They’re dirty as fuck.

        • They have been for a while. Some of their transfers in the last decade were necessitated by people sniffing around because of pay-offs from Nike to their AAU teams. When they left, people stopped sniffing.

          • Yeah, I’ve heard that stuff at least with regard to the NCAA. I think the FBI doesn’t stop sniffing as quickly. They could be well and truly fucked.

  2. Washington is better in all 3 phases, with a major advantage in coaching staff. I’m not sure I’ve ever said this but I don’t see any possible way we win this game. Peterson is just too good. And he’s put together an all around solid team full of tough guys who wear big boy pants.

Teams who can be upset are your USC’s or UCLA’s who have a bunch of 4 and 5 star prima donnas who through chemistry issues may not show up for a game. Peterson (kinda like Stanford) seems to focus on the high caliber players who are smarter and mentally stronger.

  3. I’m wondering/worrying about the play calling Saturday…will we get the same crap or will someone call a decent game – so we only lose by 15-18? We need to have sustained drives and keep the ball. That will help the defense stay off the field. Can our coaching staff figure out a way to do this?

    Huskies 56-14
    OR
    Huskies 34-17 (decent play calling)

      • Yeah, the way I see it decent play calling isn’t so much about our team scoring, it’s about their team NOT scoring. I know that seems weird, but good play calling on our side means keeping our offense on the field, which may not translate to our scoring…just keeping the Husky offense on the sidelines where they can’t score.

  4. Sorry for going off topic. Just thought this was funny. Quote from Rick Pitino when they landed 5* basketball player Brian Bowen.

Bowen didn’t include Louisville on any of his five official visits, and practically every recruiting analyst didn’t have the ACC program associated with the talented wing as his decision day loomed.

“We got lucky on this one,” Pitino told Terry Meiners of News Radio 840. “I had an AAU director call me and ask me if I’d be interested in a player (Bowen). I saw him against another great player from Indiana. I said ‘Yeah, I’d be really interested.’ They had to come in unofficially, pay for their hotel, pay for their meals. We spent zero dollars recruiting a five-star athlete who I loved when I say him play. In my 40 years of coaching this is the luckiest I’ve been.”

What I find most interesting is Bowen had to visit on his own dime/unofficially because he had already used his 5 official visits.
One of his other unofficial/out of his own pocket visits was to Oregon.
Excerpt from Oregonlive on May 17, 2017:

The Oregon Ducks men’s basketball team already has the nation’s No. 11 recruiting class, according to 247Sports , but Dana Altman may still have an ace up his sleeve.

After failing to make the cut from consensus five-star small forward Brian Bowen’s 12 semifinalists to his final five , the Ducks have re-entered the picture.

According to 247Sports’ Matt Prehm , the 6-foot-7, 194-pound prospect, out of La Lumiere School (La Porte, Indiana), is currently on a visit to Oregon with his mother.

Bowen has already taken official visits to Arizona, Creighton, Michigan State, North Carolina State and Texas, which would indicate he paid his own way to check out Eugene.

I’m sure he paid his own way…..

      • I should have said $150K. From the court filing:

…during those calls, Gatto and Code discussed, among other things, Coach-3’s request to Gatto that Company-1(Adidas) make a $150,000 payment to Player-12(Bowen) in order to prevent Player-12(Bowen) from committing to attend another NCAA Division I university sponsored by a rival athletic apprel company that allegedly had offered Player-12(Bowen) a substantial sum of money.

Bowen’s Oregon visit was his visit that immediately preceded the Louisville visit. Both were unofficial visits.

      • I saw Gottleib downtown with a couple of tall dudes folded into his BMW convertible. Didn’t recognize them figured they must be recruits or new to campus? Anyway it didn’t look like we were dropping 100k on recruiting.

          • Agau is nice. He had a great summer. And he wants to play in the Pac… and study kinesiology.

I like our chances with him. We’ll see what Ernie Kent has to say about that.

            Washington looks nice.
            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mzMjZ-ZDYE

I imagine there’s quite a bit of competition for him. He’s top flight material once he matures physically. Look at how well he runs the high post… and the side post, and the short corner. And he has a soft finish. I know the competition is shorter than him, but his game is pretty.

          • A friend says about posts that shorter competition forces the kid to play fundamentally sound ball. He’ll find against taller competition that keeping the ball up will also benefit him, because his feet are correct and his trunk is upright. That’s where the soft touch comes in handy. Next level players aren’t going to give him clean looks.

      • The whole point is that he was going to get paid either way. Head coaches can feign incredulity because they are given plausible denial when a third party who happens to be a corporate sponsor does all the dirty work for them.

The coaches know it’s going on. Everyone knows what’s going on.

What’s incredible is that the NCAA finally did something about it. Had they nipped it in the bud instead of bowing to the almighty dollar, the criminal extent of this would have been mitigated.

        • >What’s incredible is that the NCAA finally did something about it.

Isn’t this the FBI? I believe the NCAA would still be ignoring this if it hadn’t become a federal issue.

          • It got to the point that they couldn’t legally ignore it, so they passed it off to the feds.

If that’s not the case, watch for most of the NCAA compliance division to be disbarred.

          • You know how long it takes for feds to investigate and build a case.

This will probably peel back several years of violations when all is said and done. The NCAA gets to come out of this hammering all those schools who jammed them at every turn and laughed in their face because the general public buys that a college education is worthless, and players should get paid.

But if the feds prosecute and provide all this info to the public, as they should, the NCAA can tell the public to go stuff it. Rules is just rules.

      • “Code, himself a former Clemson basketball player, laid out the business logic of the bribes. “You guys are being introduced to… how stuff happens with kids and getting into particular schools and so this is kind of one of those instances where we needed to step up and help one of our flagship schools, you know, secure a five-star caliber kid. Obviously that helps, you know, our potential business.”

Gatto allegedly got the money from Adidas by submitting false invoices to the company.

Code once headed a junior basketball league for Nike. In a July 2013 letter from Code to participants in a LeBron James Skills Academy, Code identified himself as elite youth director of Nike basketball. He left Nike three years ago, the company said.”

I’m sure that never goes on over at Nike. I’m sure Code just got immediately up to speed on how it all works once he started at Adidas.

  5. BASEBALL: Casey, on the JoeBeav show today, says plans are for a scrimmage this Saturday at 1. This in addition to tonights 6pm event.

Saturday expected to include free popcorn and pop with an opportunity to donate for hurricane relief.

Forecast: 60% showers Sat am, wonder if that jackass Meggs will be on hand on a spy mission?

  6. “It’s a shame he gets this tough part of the schedule. Watch Luton miss this difficult stretch then return for the easy back half, do well, and people become convinced he’s the answer (something they didn’t grant to McM versus the easier opponents). Ah, so much bias and hate.”

It was clear in the offseason the middle third of this schedule was going to be tough for whatever QB the Beavers played. You still want to bring this back to McMaryion?

That thread you wrote last year with all the “I feel like everyone hates McMaryion, disrespects him, wants him to fail…everyone loves and respects Garretson wants him to succeed…” was the anti-AngryBeav: it was hyperbole and false narrative.

I don’t recall anyone here hating McMaryion or wanting him to fail, or everyone loving Garretson. That’s as extreme and as much false narrative as the Olive’s “nobody does better with less than Mike Riley…” bullshit. I haven’t noticed anyone here who’d rather the team lose than an individual player succeed.

Also, setting up the Beaver QB problem as either “the strong armed gunslinger” v. “the game manager” oversimplifies the problem and the potential solutions. Just because Luton is 6′ 6″ and can throw a 60-yard spiral doesn’t mean he couldn’t be a game manager if so coached. EVERY QB should be coached to be a game manager, not just the ones with slow releases who can’t throw deep outs. Luton hasn’t received that kind of coaching – at least from an OC play-calling perspective – and until he does, we won’t really know if he’s capable of it. He may not be, but I’d rather see him coached that way with a run-emphasis offense then what McLovin has called so far this season.

The bias for McMaryion and hate seems to reside mostly in you yet you want to assign it to others and present yourself as predictably disappointed (sigh).

I know this site doesn’t hold your interest like it once did and that’s understandable. But I think you have to watch that you don’t develop and perpetuate the kind of false narratives you used to rally against, and which, I think, led you to develop this site(?).

    • Hm?

Many want McM to fail at Fresno. Go back and read the quotes in recent threads. People call him 2nd and 3rd string there and laugh and belittle the success he had vs great defenses in Alabama and Washington, coming up with any and every reason to belittle him. People call him noodle arm. People say Washington had 3rd stringers in when they didn’t. It goes on and on.. Many wanted him to fail at OSU just to say I was wrong. It’s sad.

They want him to fail because I thought he was the best QB for the OSU job (which proved to be true after seeing Luton).

Whether you can make Luton a game manager or not is debatable. I don’t think you can turn a QB into a game manager this late in their career. He self-identifies as a gunslinger. His own quote. And he smirked when he said it. He likes being that type of QB. Read Leach’s quotes on teaching accuracy. It’s impossible and fool’s gold. Game managers must be accurate. It’s not on the coaches. Recruiting and playing Luton is on the coaches, but Luton not being a game manager or accurate is not on them.

      • He has a noodle arm.

Do you dispute that? I thought it was a positive in your argument to play him. 20/20 hindsight says you were dead on with the shiny new toy aspect. But you targeted GA, and McGiven is to blame. GA in no uncertain terms is distancing himself from the play calling. That would be his stubborness–not telling the O to coach to our strengths, not the opposition’s perceived weaknesses.

But all of that doesn’t give MM more than a noodle arm.

        Sorry?

        • And prior to his injury, did Luzon stretch the field at all? The answer is no. I all fairness to MM, receivers dropped passes game after game, the o line was a mess until later in the year and the running game didn’t click until the o line got healthy. Once those things happened, MM demonstrated his ability to use his brain, arm and legs to beat AZ and Oregon. Remember, it was MM 33 yard run that got the beavs going against the ducks. In the AZ game, he threw for five Tds, 12-15 and something like 200 yds passing and 81 rushing. Without MM, the beavs don’t even win those two games. Luzon is a stiff who has difficulty hitting someone open on a swing pass. He is way too inconsistent and doesn’t appear to possess the most important quality as a team leader that can make big plays in big moments. If DG gets the offense moving with his arm and legs, it’s gong to make the decision to start Luton.look even worse.

          • Without MM, the beavs don’t even win those two games.

Sure. In a vacuum, that’s true. But any other serviceable QB would have wan those games, were they available. No DG. CB is on one wheel. No SC. Even Togiai wasn’t available. So I guess this is technically correct. Moran could have played, and we would have won. But it would have just been handing the ball off. Better to go wildcat, if that’s the case.

That’s how really really bad those teams were at the end of last year. We were playing against Zony’s practice squad, and Nikegon had given up.

          • Thanks for explaining your expert scouting on arm strength.. How many pull ups can you do? Maybe that can help his noodle arm, as opposed to 300 lbs deadlifts?

          • 300 lbs?

            Heh heh.

Is that why your girl is so bad at math?

You: “Yeah honey, that’s 300 pounds and six inches.”
Her: “Why does it look dead?”
            You: “I need to lift it… all 300 pounds of it… yep… 300 pounds.”

You don’t need to be an expert to recognize differences in arm strength. It is perhaps the easiest thing in football to gauge besides height. Your question is like asking me to explain my expertise on judging height.

            You just ask dumb questions.

          • That’s fair. AZ was a dumpster fire by the time we played them, absolutely terrible football team. Any QB we fielded would have beaten them.

Oregon..we might have lost with poorer QB play in the first half. Hard to say. We’d probably have been better off throwing less and running more earlier in the game, so maybe a worse QB backs into a good outcome.

          • See, there is Alex belittling McM throwing FIVE TDs. Possible the best game ever by an OSU QB in terms of the running and QB efficiency. Means nothing, though. Unless Luton did it…

            My original point understood yet?

Are you telling me last year’s Arizona team was worst than Portland State’s this year? Because Luton didn’t throw 5 TDs, run, or have a nearly perfect rating. To say he would have beaten AZ last year is beyond asinine, and it makes it clear you simply hate McM because I like him and realized he was the best option before anyone else, including the coach. I understand why that’s hard to admit.

          • Yes.

Zony was literally burning redshirts and playing redshirt frosh walk-ons from the practice team.

Why is this hard to understand?

It should tell you something that RichRod wasn’t fired.

We were LITERALLY playing against their practice squad.

            Yay!

  7. Effective running game can keep the game close. Any kind of passing by garretson will be a huge plus. He’s been a huge letdown. That Minnesota game year really took everything from him. That was the last time he had a TD pass until last week.

Expecting 30% of the crowd to be UW fans. After halftime, they’ll be the majority. Betting folks should be on UW covering and straight up. Should be easy money there.

Outside of major injuries to UWs qb and rb, there’s not much of a chance to beat uw. This team can’t win unless the football gods really give them help.

I don’t think GA will be leaving anytime soon. Prob gets two more years after this since there’s no $ to buy him out and no donor willing to step up.

  8. 64-17 I don’t think our defense will be able to stop browning dual threat abilities. We haven’t played a caliber team like UW yet. I see similar results from 2-4 years ago when half the stadium never came back after halftime. Half of the rest left in the 4th quarter(I was one of these fans for the first time in a long time. Late game, we’ll be nervous, they’ll be relaxed, we’ll be lathargic, they’ll conduct business.

    • I stayed until the end of that game also. Pretty good rain coming down but coming up from Sacramento I had to. My daughter asked if we could leave so we watched the last couple minutes from the Dutch bros line inside. The game reminded me of the miserable Vegas bowl. I took that punishment and didn’t leave until it was over.
      Right the ship. Go BEAVS!

  9. Re: BBall scandal, my guess is that Nike wants to take a bigger market share and set up the sting or helped steer FBI into the right info to take out Adidas and Under Armor…or Nike is in deep trouble and by direct link UofO will also get busted because niether has been named yet but Nike is the biggest fish to fry and many schools linked to them directly. Louisville will likely get the death penalty for bball, what other blue bloods will be nailed? I think UofO is an upstart with too close of ties to Nike for them to skate. It is easy to see how they have landed these 5 star bball guys out of nowhere over the last 5-6 years.

Nikegon Athletics=Football: cheat and get to a National Championship: Basketball:cheat and get to a Final Four

    • I have an old email from someone involved in Oregon buying a player…(Bruce Barron). Names of the coaches involved, amount paid, etc. Source told me not to post the email and name the coaches, but mentioned who they were and that Barron was bought.

      • Nike as a company is down. They’ve been losing market share across the board. I live in an area inhabited by a lot of employees and they went through large layoffs this summer at the campus, closed and consolidated divisions….

Funny timing. Wonder if they’ve had some tip-offs to damage competition and try to right the ship…

        • >Funny timing. Wonder if they’ve had some tip-offs to damage competition and try to right the ship…

Nike’s at the heart of it though, this is going to hurt them as much as it will hurt Adidas. Most of the schools named are Nike schools.

        • I certainly do, and showed it to NiceBeaver tonight. It’s from 2011, but I kept it just in case something like this happened. Names are named. Tweeted that I have it to the Oregonian and offered to give it to them if they want to do a story. Crickets so far.

          • Not sure why if you did end up sharing it that you’d throw the O the bone. Don’t we hate them?

I imagine there are Fuskie writers at the Seattle times who would be more interested in sinking hole athletics.

          • Seriously? If you’ve got evidence that Oregon engaged in this kind of behavior, send it to the freaking FBI, not the Oregonian. Withholding information like this can only lead to bad things.

          • Does the FBI have an email/tip page up? What’s the link?

I’m pretty sure I’m allowed to withhold the information since the source asked me to do so, and technically I’m “media”…

Thing is, six years have passed, and I wrote the source asking if I can share it, and got no response, so I’m not sure what my obligations are.

          • Your legal obligation with evidence of wrong doing that is currently being investigated gives the FBI a starting point to look into UofO BB, especially since Phil Knight, CEO of Nike or former now, is so tightly involved with UofO athletics. It’s like applying for jobs, don’t assume you aren’t qualified for a job, so you don’t apply; what’s the harm in applying and they don’t interview or do and you lose to someone who is more qualified? At leas then you know you need more experience, or in this case, evidence, to be able to apply or give instances of evidence to the FBI.

          • He’s saying he has an obligation to protect a source, and he’s right. Like a priest, all he can do is suggest to the person who sent it that they go to the authorities with the info… unless he gets permission from them to go on record.

The statute of limitations might have run out on that case, if it was even a crime at the time. Remember, the law recently changed so that agents dealing with SAs would be acting illegally. The money-laundering, bribery and wire fraud were always occurring, but the feds couldn’t get the proper surveillance warrants to catch them because they had no foundational basis for doing so.

          • Doubtful that the O live schmucks will answer at all…. I have thought for a long time most of those hacks at that paper were on the Nike pay role…. right now all they are doing is writing stories about Arizona… and I’m sure soon to come will be stories about U$C….Nemac is doing his best to spin this whole thing to make University of Zero seem better for the recruits that are suddenly back in play….Nike money will pave the way …..

          • You’re totally right about Nemec trying to spin it as a positive for Oregon. Predictable, and you can tell he’s trying to make it look like he’s just reporting the news. Don’t worry Andrew, everybody can see through it, no need to pretend it’s anything more than a recruiting pitch for UofO.

          • It’s a little sad anemec:

            A. is willfully ignorant of Nikegon’s recruiting activities.
            B. is paid for ignoring then enabling Nikegon’s recruiting activities.
            C. is treating these kids like cattle being led to slaughter.

I don’t think the moron knows how immensely huge this case is. The FBI is not done naming schools, coaches, players and others. And the FBI doesn’t just tell someone they don’t have eligibility or might get suspended for a game or two.

Maybe he should ask Tony Stubblefield what he thinks about all this recruiting stuff. I mean… Stubbs is a great recruiter. He could convince great players to go to Las Cruces, New Mexico for their college careers.

And I wonder if anemec might have a clue what school and shoe-corp the Adidas exec was talking about when referring to a competing pay-off for Bowen.

            Hmmm.

          • When I asked the source (in 2011) if I could go public with the info, he said yes, just not the email itself. I wrote a few days ago to ask if I could now go public with the email, and I heard no response. The source could be dead for all I know. He also said he was going to go to other (media) sources with his info, so I guess I can assume from that he wouldn’t have a problem with my sharing it privately? I’m going to call the FBI and give it to them. Statute might have passed, but I don’t think I’d be in the wrong for reporting this privately to the FBI.

          • To put how big this is in perpective, this is a shot across the bow to those coaches and schools and shoe-corps who do this. For anemec to ignore the big picture in order to pump the rah rah for a school he supposedly covers as a journalist is disingenuous at best.

The whole issue with all that activity is trust. Trust is now gone. Many coaches have dealt with the runners who have already been arrested. Other runners are known associates of those arrested and have dealt extensively with many coaches and boosters. If anyone decides to try this shit from here forward, who are they going to trust to do it? You don’t know if the runner or coach you’re dealing with is mic’ed up. Hell, you don’t even know if there aren’t any undercover federal agents in the room for any given deal.

Any reporter tying themselves so closely to that world while ignoring reality should be shaking in their boots. Jeff Goodman looks like he’s petrified. His phone must be ringing off the hook.

And how’s this for the last nail in the coffin?

People are bribing, being bribed, laundering money, etc.

I wonder if there’s a government agency that might sit up and take notice of people who aren’t correctly reporting income, whether they’re charged by the FBI or not.

    • Syracuse, Kentucky, Miami and others are mentioned a lot. The news about Adidas is only because an executive was indicted. The story goes much deeper. There are probably more indictments on the way.

    • I’m not so sure they are…they seem to enjoy UO’s “national prominence” in men’s football and basketball more than is healthy for them.

    • There’s a list of schools who have just inexplicably (well… explicably if you look at the shoe company connections their assistant coaches are known to have) become top tier in recruiting over the last couple decades, and especially lately.

Nikegon is one of them. Throw in Baylor, South Carolina, UW, anywhere Bruce Pearl, Steve Fisher or Ben Howland go, Florida State, Miami… and most recently USC, Cal and LSU.

      • “Nikegon is one of them.”

There’s their recent and suspicious success in hoops recruiting these last several years….and there’s that nauseating “Phil Knight 80th Bday tournament” in November with all “Nike schools” and it looks very odd.

Makes me wonder if Taggert’s surprising success on the recruiting trail is dirty.

        • I’m sure football is big time dirty. If the FBI is taking down sports agents coaches and AAU programs with undercover agents and wiretaps, I would not like to be an NCAA football coach at some of these schools right now.

          • Aau would be difficult to oversee as far as the recruiting by colleges and ncaa policy. Like it’s impossible to detect every violation that happens, it’s ripe for underhanded dealings. That brings us to the latest football “showcases”. Which are a recent phenomenon as far as recruiting goes, back 15 years ago you just went to a colleges full contact summer camp and that was it. I can see where it might be dirty.

      • South Carolina is Frank Martin. So there’s no mystery with him. Everyone knew about him since Beasley committed to KState.

He’d likely be one of these indicted assistants if this was a decade ago.

        • Howland was all but hired at one point, except he went and did a recruiting violation before he even signed.

Someone here wanted either him or Pearl, and they used their “stellar” recruiting last year as a battering ram. That person is a moron for this very reason.

If there’s one thing for which I will praise Bobby D, it’s that he told the Pump Bros to stuff it when the almost human, Jay John, was fired. Maybe some of you will understand what kind of rock and hard place he was dealing with at that time.

We could have been instantly dance-worthy with a shoe-corp sanctioned coach. And it looks like academic pay-offs were also involved. Berto wouldn’t have had to wait a year and a half to play. He wouldn’t have had to have deal with the Clearinghouse at all.

  10. Angry, can you post a brief rundown of all the things you have had sources email you or reach out to you about before and that turned out to be true? I don’t think a lot of people realize how often you do get this info and it’s correct.

    • Not going. Too far to travel and it would take too much time to get there and watch the game played poorly. I wouldn’t hope for a competitive game. Unfortunate to say it this early in the season, its probably best to look for something else besides a win this Saturday; enjoy Nall’s running while you can, look for future players, look for who’s not quitting, etc.

The poor play and poor offensive play calling are doubly disappointing as the toughest, and most interesting part of the home schedule comes up. And yet fans will be scarce in the coming 5 weeks. As someone else pointed out, likely to be a good crowd of ‘Dawgs there this Saturday.

I think the students could and should still have fun and hope they fill up their section.

  11. Tinkle may have a real shot at a Men’s NCAA national championship within the next 5 year window. There may only be about 30 P5 schools left standing after the dust settles from this scandal.

The defense and rationale from all of these schools will be “everybody was doing it and we were just trying to stay competitive. If everybody was doing it, level playing field=nothing to see here”

Apart from FBI involvement, this is the way it would have played out, but the FBI also won’t take down every Blue Blood program in the country.

  12. Well, the FBI investigation is interesting and potentially far-reaching, maybe deserves its own thread?

Another OT, noticed the LA Sparks are in the Finals. Tied at 1-1 with Minnesota Lynx with 3 games to go. Sounds like the two met in last year’s finals also.

Sydney Weise is on the LA roster, only has a minute of PT in the post season. She played in 28 games this season, averaging about 8 minutes per game. Hopefully she ends up with a championship.

      • Gopher vs Beaver in the WNBA finals. Lindsay Whalen of the Lynx is a U of M legend and perhaps GOAT for WNBA point guards. She was the best passer other than Pistol Pete and Magic I ever saw. Took her team to the Final Four with a broken hand. I was hoping Syd would get picked by the Lynx so she could have her as a mentor.

  13. Some tidbits from the OLive. I don’t read there much anymore, but was curious to see how the played, or downplayed, the basketball investigations. On Beaver football:

Andersen wants Beavers to “have more fun.” Wow, that will change things…

Beavers looking to get Togiai the ball again…no surprise there.

Beavers going to use two back set of Nall/Pierce again:

“”It’s harder than everybody thinks it is,” Lockette said of implementing the package. “You’ve got two different guys with two different styles to try to complement them both at the same time to try to give this offense a spark. We’re doing the best that we can right now to get this thing going. We’re going to get it going.”

Tyner to be used similar as he was against PSU, as a decoy, lining up in slot or running fly sweep….

But good news on Petras who is visiting this weekend:

“Petras’ visit to Corvallis is the lone official visit he’s scheduled, and he is locked into his commitment.

He intends to enroll early and be on campus shortly after the start of the year. ”

“I think school starts January 6, so I should be up there a day or two before that,” he said. “I plan on competing from day one. That’s why I’m going early, to help me learn the offense. I think if you’re not competing somewhere you’re kind of wasting your time, so that’s why I’m there. They said the best guy is going to start. I don’t know what the situation is now that Jake is hurt, but they were solid with Jake. The best guy is going to start. If that’s me my true freshman year, then I’m going to start.”

Hopefully this UW game and lack of attendance won’t discourage him. If he is that solid, he can likely help with recruiting.

    • Oh, and this on Petras so far in his senior year:

“Equally encouraging for Oregon State has been Petras’ start to his senior campaign, as the coveted signal-caller has thrown for 1,103 yards and 14 touchdowns with no interceptions on his way to a 4-0 record.”

      • You have to like the zero int on the season…. and the fact that he also has said he is actively trying to get other kids to OSU is encouraging he is truly committed…. the Bad news is I am sure we will have to suffer through at least a year if him red shirting or suffering through the steep learning curve of a true freshman trying to start in the PAC 12.

  14. At the beginning of the fourth quarter there will be fewer Beaver fans left in the stadium than total points scored. Huskies 58-10, assuming Petersen shows some mercy.

Barnes should up charge stadium parking to $50 to rip-off thousands of Husky fans.

  15. Pitino and the AD at Louisville have both been fired.

Highly doubt anyone would touch that scumbag with a 10 foot pole. Career = over. Hope cheating was worth it asshole

  16. Hey BG, are you worried about any fallout on this from an apple-falling-from-tree perspective?

I understand a son shouldn’t pay for a father’s crimes. But Pitino has been dirty forever. Only Calipari and Larry Brown could beat him in that category. Is there any worry that the son learned to cut corners unwittingly, then learned to accept them as “just business” once he learned much of what his father did was in violation of NCAA rules?

    • Should have done what osu did and hire the kids dad.

Also what’s going to be real funny is that you know lonzo ball didn’t take any money because his dad is nuts.

  17. The thing that blows my mind is all the otherwise intelligent people who are acting as if they’re shocked about this.

    Really?

    Sonny Vaccaro?
    https://www.cnbc.com/2017/09/26/guy-who-signed-michael-jordan-at-nike-says-hes-shocked-by-the-ncaa-bribery-arrests.html

    Seriously?

The only reason he’s probably upset is because he’s not the one who is front and center in this. If he wants to try to boil this down to say that paying players would have mitigated this, he’s bonkers. It would be so much bigger if there was more money everywhere.

If he wants to boil it down to people being in school when they have no business being there, I’m willing to listen. But he has to admit he’s probably the founder of this culture where kids are taught to take the quick buck for the short term rather than buckle down and earn that future security with an education.

    • Or maybe he’s shocked for the same reason anyone else feigned shock yesterday.

It was a good day for the good people in NCAA sports, and he was never one of them.

    • Perhaps they want to appear sanctimonious…

This is all kind of funny to me. Watching fans – who live far too vicariously through their teams – find out how dirty their programs are.

Lotsa people shitting themselves right now…”The FBI?!? We just thought we had to worry about the spineless NCAA!”

      • I don’t think the fans quite understand what’s going on. A friend and I were talking this morning about it, and he joked that now he knows why Bowen chose Louisville, not Nikegon.

What I had to explain to him is that the kid and his handlers are making bank. When he announces his “final five,” he’s announcing who is going to pay the most for his OVs. For all I know, one of our coaches was in the bidding with some paltry offer that didn’t make the cut. I hope that’s not the case, but I won’t be surprised if I ever find that to be the case.

They get installments for each stage of his recruitment. If you want access, you pay for access. If you want an OV, you pay for an OV. If you want him to go to school at your school, you have to have the most enticing offer.

To be considered by Bowen, each school involved had to pay a certain amount. The shoe-corp money was just the icing on the cake.

        • Coincidence that Bowen traveled to u of zero “on his own dime” right before he signed for the money with l ville? Could be but also could have been checking out another of the bidders…. I’m sure Jc Nike has anything to say or pay about it that we will never know.

  18. This whole Nike EYBL (Elite Youth Basketball League) angle is pretty interesting. If you look at the rosters of these Nike sponsored AAU teams, you see a direct correalation to the apparel sponsor at the school the athletes choose to attend. I’m hoping a thourough list comes out so we can see it more clearly.
That by itself is kindof a “no duh” glimpse into a corrupt system. Even if nobody finds proof that Nike or agents gave money directly to kids to play for specific teams, you at least can plainly see the channels that the athletes are controlled by, which end up giving the kids only certain options as far as which colleges they atrend. Helps explain why hoops recruits are typically so hush hush about their activity, and any news about visits or team interest is usually tweeted about by their coaches.
If Nike/Adidas/UA sponsored AAU players only play for their respectively branded colleges, the whole system needs to be shut down. It essentially turns the AAU system into farm teams for certain colleges.
    I know…..no duh….

    • EYBL will be really interesting.

The U of Nike’s top commit for 2018, Louis King, is an EYBL guy. Funny, he also held a Louisville offer.

Their other commit, Miles Norris, played for an Under Armor team, Earl Watson Elite.

      • See… college hoops fans have run the calculations in their heads for years upon years. There is no such thing as coincidence. There is only soup or steak.

  19. Eggers quotes GA, “He doesn’t have the rocket arm some other guys have,” Andersen says, “but he’s a proven winner, a leader, very smart, a good scrambler” Sounds like the opposite of Luton.

Is he referring to Garretson?…………………Nope, he is speaking of Jake Browning. Still, could GA be on the verge of recognizing that someone other than Luton, someone w/o a rocket arm, could be the answer?

Meanwhile, McGiven shows he’s not counting on much from Tyner: “He’s out there practicing but I wouldn’t say he’s one of the top three guys to go in, so we’ll have to see how we work him into the mix”..we’ve got to see where he’s at from a conditioning standpoint, we’ve got to see where he’s at knowing the game plan and knowing the offense because I’m not going to put him out there if he’s a liability,” This, per the GT.

  20. So regarding donations: so far zero donations (thought I had 1, but it turned out to be from elsewhere), even though a cup of coffee only costs $1 many places. So people either think AB is not worth even that, or they hate crypto-currency. I think it’s the latter. This shows how resistant to change people are, and how far crypto is from being mainstream, despite the narratives we hear. I’ll continue to collect data.

  21. Some media from up north:

UW has the “most efficient” offense in the country, and the way the describe it, it almost sounds like what GA thought/said he wanted(?):

    https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/uw-husky-football/washington-once-again-has-the-most-efficient-offense-in-college-football/

Jake on his dad playing at OSU:

“Jake Browning was aware, certainly, of his father’s career at Oregon State. Ed Browning, it seemed, had enjoyed Corvallis, and the enduring friendships made there, but he never offered up many details to his son about his time as the Beavers’ quarterback.

“I don’t think they were very good when he was there,” Jake Browning said Tuesday, “so he didn’t talk about it a ton.”

    ….
Browning’s four touchdown passes also tied the Reser Stadium record for TD passes in a half. His dad was in the stands that night.

“It was cool for me,” Jake Browning said. “I was a true freshman, so I’d never been there before. They didn’t offer me out of high school or anything, so I didn’t check it out. The last time I’d been there was when I was little and we lived in Portland.”

Jake Browning grew up watching the Beavers. He would have been about 5 years old when Jonathan Smith led Oregon State to the 2001 Fiesta Bowl. Smith, of course, is now Jake’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at UW.

“I watched them when Coach Smith played there,” Jake said. “I remember all the names growing up.”

    https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/uw-husky-football/uws-jake-browning-and-his-father-have-long-history-in-corvallis/

A generous UW co-D coordinator, Jimmy Lake, states that defending OSU’s offense will “be a challenge.”

    https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/uw-husky-football/uws-jimmy-lake-on-oregon-states-offense-this-will-be-a-tremendous-challenge/

      • Peterson locked him up pretty early. Committed as a junior in high school. He took no official or unofficial visits to any other schools but uw. He would have going to Boise had Peterson not left. I don’t regard this as a miss.

      • The true blame has to be on that asshole Pettibone for benching Jake’s dad! I had to laugh Ed Browning led the ’91 Beavs in passing with 171 yards for the entire season!

  22. While I’d like to see stuff like this cleaned up
College basketball coaches charged with accepting bribes in federal corruption case

What I’m more concerned about is stuff like this:
FBI: 30% Of Washington DC Part Of Elite Pedo Ring

For some reason the coaches story kinda reminds me of what happened with Martha Stewart getting nailed for insider trading. The public’s appetite for getting the folks who were doing insider trading was dulled or blunted after one of the public’s favorites went down.

So it’s look at this hand (coaches paying bribes) and not at this hand (sleaze ball big shot pedophiles).

    BWDIK

  23. Gregg Doyel pretty much sums it up for me.
    http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/columnists/gregg-doyel/2017/09/26/doyel-fbi-college-basketball-cheating-scandal/704661001/

    This is simply awesome stuff.

What’s not so awesome is that some of these kids were led down the garden path, and now they won’t get to play in the NCAAs. There’s a good possibility some kids won’t get to play their senior or even junior years in high school.

Maybe they’ll be protected because they’re minors? But I can’t imagine some of these high school hoops factories would risk their program’s eligibility or future status for a couple kids.

  24. Since this weekend’s game is likely to be lightly attended by beaver fans, was figuring there should be plenty of cheap seats available. anybody know where I could look to get some cheap/free tix for 4 to the game? Looks like Seatgeek has some for $25+, but I’m looking for dirt cheap…..
Is it worth asking the school for freebies in exchange for putting 4 orange buts in the seats, rather than purple?

    • To be fair, nothing they have done has looked like the Air Raid. And our lowest ground output for a game resembles Wazzu’s final season tallies… or thereabouts.

    • Are we any of the offenses mentioned?
When I watched the Oregon/ASU game last week, Oregon’s offense actually looked a little bit like what I think they’re attempting to put on the field.
Seems rather than “Air raid” or “Run&shoot”, we’ve become more of a “Don’t Run & Shoot Blanks”

          • When I saw a blurb about Porebski being up for an award, I was stunned, but then I read further and realized it was not for the “Ray Gay”. Most of the time he seems to kick short distance line drives. Seems like the Beavs could do better.

        • “Street Ball.” Perfect. The offense run by the kid that always wants to throw and never gives it to the biggest baddest kid on the field who also happens to be lined up in the I.

“Bro, just run to the third light post and I’ll heave it that way. You should be able to out jump Jimmy, or is it Joe?”

    • I thought a few years back with Riley still here and the WRs that were at OSU you suggested the air raid might be good for OSU given the personnel? Was that related to the notion of Leach as OC or HC, or separate from Leach altogether?

Or am I just remembering wrong….

      • If memory serves it was based on Riley mainly being good at recruiting Wide Receivers and QB’s.

Always talking about balance but abandoning the run early and often. Figured that was Langsdorks tendency so we might as well go all out Air Raid,

        • ?

I’m not sure how two of the nation’s top cops are involved with your psychosis, but I’m starting to see it. You bozos are beyond whackadoodle and bordering on needing someone to come take your children away for their own safety.

        • Okay… for the sake of pretending really really stupid isn’t really really stupid, what did they did?

I await your most informative links.

If not, I just go bonkers talking about how fucking stupid you morons might be. And I might do it for a long long time.

      • Thx – so kindof like a student council. Wonder if any of this pertains to wbb. I remember when Sabrina Ionescu waited until the last minute and only after Washington wouldn’t hire her coach to commit to Oregon- or so the story went. And how Scott Rueck backed off early on. Nah, probably not.

        • Oh for the love of a pretend god!!!!

Scotty likes to negative recruit, and women who are insulted because he tells them OSU “takes care” of their players in the same sense that they don’t turn gay or whatever will be turned off by that not so subtle method.

It is what it is. We’re going to compete with Notre Dame for the leftovers because we have tiny minds.

It doesn’t mean we won’t win 25 games a year and make good runs in the dance.

          Yay!

          • I must retract that last.

I have no proof that Scotty likes doing this. That statement was incorrect. I apologize.

It would be helpful if he would clarify such ideas in an open forum, say, in public.

I’m sure any negs I’m getting here are because you all can’t possibly believe that an OSU coach is both negative and bigoted in recruiting.

I think he is. I like him, but I know his very limited upside. I would like for him to definitively address all this.

Regarding Tyner, how was it he knew the offense and was ready enough to play game 1, but now in game 5 he doesn’t know the playbook and is suddenly a liability? McGiven is Bozo the Clown.

  26. Thomas Tyner, Craig Evans, Shurrod Thompson, Christian Wallace, the Gunslinger, Nall the “War Daddy”, Bolden the leader, Seth the Great, Big Boy Pants Football, Toughness, Off-season Lifting, Bench and Squat improvements, Aggressive in every Phase, Opponents must bring their “A” game to Reser are all offseason inventions that have been used to distract and obfuscate what appear to be now obvious flaws within the coaching staff and their approach to strategy and game-planning.

It seems OSU has been duped again. Compared to Riley, GA has the better word game, presser presence, and talks a good game, but the on-field results are lacking in too many areas to expect it to “flip” as they want to keep saying. GA is just more wordy and sounds smarter, tougher and different enough to make many gullible again.

    Neat deal vs. Scenario/Situation/Setting/Spot

GA has 4 words for any circumstance and sounds more thoughtful interchanging such words in an interview rather than a simple phrase like ‘neat deal’.

    • I had a terrible thought, maybe GA was excited with the move to Wisconsin but after a while he realised he was a fraud and took the easy way out by moving here. I dont want to believe it, but each presser he gives on monday turns into a de-presser because of the repetitive coach speak.

      • GOD FUCKING DAMMIT WITH AN ANGEL FUCKING SATAN AND SATAN LICKING A BEAVER UNTIL THAT BEAVER SPURTS… A LOT!!!!!!!!!!!

Where the hell are you nutsos coming up with these non-ideas?

It’s like you have to first admit that Newton was an idiot, then you have admit that you don’t know who Newton is.

        What the fuck man?

        Why the stupid?

Are you being paid to be a moron?

        • So you like the 5 week long broken record that is a GA press conference? Got it. If he keeps repeating it, it will come true right? Positive reinforcement? Maybe he should start ringing a bell before he talks, that way he’ll get everybody slobbering for more GAism’s, or more like the same old ones repeated for the last 2.5 years. Call me stupid all you want, but saying one thing and doing another is stupid. And it’s getting old.

I really want GA to succeed, but it’s getting hard to believe as games go by.

    • Nope.

You don’t get away with “just four words” on this one. We got big boy pants. If there’s anything else you want to add to the shit, go right ahead. I have some phrases targeted. I’d like to see if you have them targeted as well.

I suspect you don’t, but you may find them with a modicum of study.

Btw, the Ducks are going to suffer heavily in hoops, and none of your trolling will matter.

    • We haven’t heard from the aliens-land-here crowd.

You know, for once in their existence, we actually have something that might be proof.

But even that amazing fact is overshadowed by the immense stupid that is POTUS.

Our structure is deteriorating within our socialist programs. And when I say “socialist,” I mean the most successful socialist program in the history of the world, the US Military.

If you love our troops, you love socialism. Actually, if you love any military, you love socialism. If you love our military, you love the biggest socialist program ever.

But don’t let that change how you think you feel about how you might be incorrectly defining a word.

        • You’ve had recent rants about ‘stupid’. From my perspective most of it is generated by the guy who claims to be “Jack”!

Would that be you or some other stupid-spouting angrybeav?

          • GA was excited with the move to Wisconsin but after a while he realised he was a fraud and took the easy way out by moving here.

GA was excited with the move to Wisconsin but after a while he realised he was a fraud and took the easy way out by moving here.

What I’m more concerned about is stuff like this:
FBI: 30% Of Washington DC Part Of Elite Pedo Ring

… the constant inferences to Ionescu as if there is something wrong with the girl because she doesn’t want to play at OSU

… the constant tartan shit that gets upchucked then 1000% praised by the same dude with a different handle in a reply post

If you want to bring it, I’m here. An equal and opposite reaction will clearly not work. So I’m settling for just an equal reaction. You want to piss on reason? I’ll piss on your god.

  27. I always thought I was a little loony and could go over the top for effect or fun or whatever.

This thread is pure lunacy. There are some completely stupid stupidities being floated here.

And I will stay for every single post. I will fight against this absolute stupidity.

And if you want to come knock on my door to tell me you disagree with me, I feel confident that telling you my address means you’ll be knocking on a door in Malaysia… or in a country that you can pronounce.

    • morons

You truly deserve that monicker for the time being. You all are just selling the moron for whatever reason. I’m hoping Jackass hired you and paid ten times scale. I suspect the dumb is natural.

I will have to double down if this stupidity is understood as normal.

      • Was it the rumor about her trying to get a full ship for her brother wherever she went? That was my favorite dumb rumor.

The other doozie was that UW would hire her HS coach to get her on board. I think Duck fan started that one. It had nothing to do with their Final Four run and being so well coached that two of their assistants were hired away as head coaches.

Or maybe it was because she was a diva? Does she need to apologize for knowing herself and playing with a constant chip on her shoulder? She was ignored until she put herself on the map.

    • I will not vacate this place. I will shove this stupidity in your face every day. Know that angry is not your hero, and I am not your villain. angry rightly gives you a voice, and I rightly tell you that your voice is unintelligible.

Btw, A@A, you’re a moron. My theory is that you’re Jeff Perry pretending to be a man, which Jeff Perry is not.

If you’re not a man, I can see how you might be giggling at us.

If that’s the case, congrats on not being Jeff Perry.

I’m sure you were nervous while waiting for the doc to tell you this.

  28. I may be appropriately dismayed at the stupidity displayed here. I may be deficient. What I will say is none of you have diminished my love for my school and my wanting to hear all the hokie stories, like some guy named Blackmon being allowed to be a player, again

I mean, PSAs who look here for just a simple taste of what they can expect from the somewhat intelligent people they kinda expect to be somewhere near OSU and might have a… sorry… the explanation has already taken too long.

    • I say we petition Ed Ray to dismiss the shoe contract money, for cause, and go back to the way we were doing it before… when each sport could decide on apparel and equipment that was actually suitable for their actual sport.

    • You paying attention? It’s possible that Nike pays Nick Saban more to coach Alabama than Alabama pays him to coach Alabama.

This was true of Bellotti. And for some reason, it counted toward PERS. But, nobody cares.

      • That’s not to pick on Nikegon. If OSU does it, it should stop. We need to pay our people to be loyal to us, not shoe-corp. I know Casey’s contract was worked in this way. It’s likely Tinks and GA have similar clauses.

        • I remember GA mentioning how he can get used to wearing Nike gear every day because they help pay his paycheck(or something to that effect). It was back in 2015 when he first came on board.

Goes back to why I never thought Oregon State should be a “Nike” school, while having Phil Knight’s baby down the road. Nike was never going to give us their best effort in regards to uniforms or financial support. At least a direct competitor like Adidas or UA would have had an incentive for Oregon State to take down Oregon from time to time. Plus, who knows, we might have gotten in on some of that pay for players money and actually fielded a competitive basketball team.
Ok, I kid about that last part, but this is the reason I feel pretty comfortable that Oregon State is safe in this whole FBI sting.

          • By the way, I’m pretty confident that the money raised to finish the Valley Center featured a large sum from Nike as an anonymous donor. Just look at the signage in that building. There’s a giant Nike swoosh sign everywhere you look. That only happens because there’s an agreement to feature those signs.

          • Might make you think twice when you post those silly “Built Not Bought” messages on twitter. It’s all bought, we just get a smaller allowance to play with.

          • Then it wouldn’t be a donation, anonymous or otherwise. And it would have to be reported by the school. Donations don’t work that way. You can have a lead donation and get something named after you. But anything commercial has to be licensed.

We went through all this when Parker was renamed Reser, remember?

          • I feel fairly safe in all this because Bobby D was a stick in the mud who, for all his faults, always managed to do things for the right reasons. He told the Pump Bros to pound sand in 2007. We couldn’t hire anyone who could lead us to the dance because of that. That’s how dirty the head coaches are. The same guys don’t have fixers at every stop and not know about it all. Most of them were fixers themselves before they became head coaches. Hell, that’s how Pitino first became a head coach. He blew up his head coach’s career at Hawai’i then became the interim head coach.

I think we got lucky with CR. We were going to be sanctioned because of academics if any holdovers left or failed academically after he took over. Attrition would have given him an instant excuse and what every head coach dreams of, a clean slate. It’s well documented that he had some serious head cases on that team. But he managed to get them and the program through it all. He never got any elite players because of the Pump Bros and their continued hatred of OSU. But he could yell move really loud.

          • >By the way, I’m pretty confident that the money raised to finish the Valley Center featured a large sum from Nike as an anonymous donor.

I’m 99.9% sure it was Wes Edens, not Nike.

    • Admit that you’re Doyel.

The only difference I note is the lack of “stupid”, “moron(s)” and “idiot(s)” in the text. The rest is pretty much down the line with you.

Of course that begs the question, were do you find the time?

      • Dude!

I’ve been running multiple pages since the early 90s on IRC. The interwebs are a constant stream of consciousness for me.

And when you finally decide to stop lying to yourself, you will find clarity.

        • By the last I mean you fight against what for what reason? Do you even care? Or do you just find tribalism a necessary tool?

You all think I’m a liberal why?

          It’s because I am one.

Free minds, free markets… where the markets are truly free… meaning they are regulated so oligopolies can’t control entrance to the market. An unregulated market will always lead to monopoly. An unregulated market is not free.

In fact, the best unregulated market (right now) is that which is run by the Sinaloa Cartel. They regulate themselves and the market itself. Who knew privatization of regulation could be so effective?

          • Liberalism isn’t free anything! Liberalism is following the leader, you don’t know why, but the crowd is going that way. Careful, lemmings.

You’re just a LINO…underneath you’re more of a Libertarian with some Federalist thrown in.

          • You’ll note that I am against things like politicos bought through campaign financing; eminent domain which accounts for future civic tax revenues; any kind of governmental imposition of social mores beyond equality; civil forfeiture (not a freeze) of assets without due process; anything to do with any given individual’s non-criminal, non-public loss of privacy.

If you want to go play in the weeds, fine. It makes you the fool. Those are some of the pressing issues that need to be addressed while you complain about whatever it is your creators want you to complain about in the current news cycle.

          • see, trying to be liberal again, you think if you say it enough times folks will start believing but…… FAIL!

Your Libertarian ways will point you to the truth.

          • I used to be somewhat Libertarian until my gun instructor, who is a fucking Libertarian, stole all my ammunition from me. Fuckin’ A!

            What a loser.

And he really showed that push come to shove, all people care about is their own ass. Being liberal, libertarian, or anything else are all luxuries. End of the day people will abandon all that shit for what benefits them.

          • Which is why some of us understand that regulation is a necessary evil. We can probably both point to bad regulation all day long. That’s not what I’m talking about, but the baby gets thrown out with the bath water because stupids only have tribal understandings of government. That bad regulation is most often red tape garbage, written by lobbyists for each industry, which makes it that much harder for small businesses to enter their given markets. Sometimes it even sounds well intended, but it’s still written or amended by lobbyists who know how plant a spike in a shoe, and loopholes for their clients.

The dumbest part is that the upper crust can use language to divide. There are morons out there who think National Socialism is some socialist structure. That’s the same as thinking the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is both a democracy and a republic.

It’s just dumb on top of dumb.

          • Libertarians are just anarcho-capitalists who take supply side language and try to mold some weird ideas into a logic they think can’t be broken because they can barely understand the terminology they use, if at all. Libertarianism is to economic thought as Scientology is to religion.

    • Well to be fair, the program wasn’t exactly in great shape when he took over. Do you miss Jay?

While no one would ever mistake CRs coaching acumen for, say, Wooden’s, CR did help the program in other ways, including recruiting and facilities.

    • If you hadn’t noticed, not being on the map right now is a good thing.

Any school pulling down five star talent is dirty. It’s just a matter of how expansive the FBI’s investigation becomes. Are there more indictments on their way because they have more wiretaps open and more agents undercover gathering evidence?

I sure hope that’s the case.

  29. My prediction:
Washington is going to pulverize us, then light us on fire, then pee on us, then have animals pee on us, force us to watch as they compel Hillary and Donald to make love on our pee-soaked ashes.

Yep, it’s going to be ugly.

    Oh…a score?

    59-10

….please God let me be wrong.

  30. Assuming Tinkle and Rueck are clean in this scandal, might some of the dirty teams pursue them to refresh their image? As we saw with Riley at Nebraska and Andersen here, there’s a tendency for schools to hire for (personality) traits that are the opposite of the recently dismissed coach.

Tinkle hasn’t produced a great record, and has missed on JC recruits. but now we have a better picture of what he’s up against in recruiting. Some might think it rationale to expect him to do more with better talent at a different school.

Rueck has a plan, seems to gets talent, gets player buy in, performs at a high level, and importantly doesn’t underachieve. I think he surprised some people last year. But I suppose its rare that a men’s program hires a coach from a women’s program?

    • Scotty’s pretty secure where he is.

Tinks needs a another appearance in the dance with the team he has. There’s a ton of talent on our team, when healthy. I love the walk-ons, but I would rather see them come in the game with 40 seconds left.

      So it’s possible.

I don’t know that he would want to move so soon after this bomb. Would you want to be the rebound date for any of these schools?

  31. Rivals, in desperation(?), invokes OSU “giant killer” history in preview of this week’s game.

The interesting part is catching Andersen with what sounds like a different take on Tyner than OC McLovin:

“A bit of good news for the OSU ground attack is the imminent return of Thomas Tyner on Saturday. In his short time as a Beaver, Tyner has been largely ineffective. Whether it’s been familiarity, injuries, or lack of touches, he hasn’t been able to kickstart his OSU career. That could all change on Saturday, as it appears that Andersen and Co. are wanting to give Tyner the ball against the Huskies given that he is now healthy.

“We’d like to get him back in the flow of things,” Andersen said. “He’s obviously been frustrated not being out there, but this week it’s been there. He can be a part of that offense. He’s healthy and you’ll see him out there.”

When asked about what exactly Tyner could bring to the offense when he’s fully healthy and involved, Andersen had nothing but praise for the former five star recruit.

“He has very good speed and catches the ball very well,” Andersen said. “He’s a threat with the ball outside of the backfield. He has that real skillset of speed. His god given abilities are pretty good when he has the ball in his hands.””

“While the odds are stacked against the Beavers in this matchup with Washington, it is worth noting that the Beavers have done this before. The most recent example is 2008 as the 1-2 Beavers welcomed No. 1 USC into Reser Stadium. The Beavers were 1-2 with a blowout loss to Penn State on their resume. The Beavers odds weren’t good against a team that featured future NFL stars Clay Matthews, Brian Cushing, and Rey Maualuga.

Despite all those future stars, the Beavers came out under the lights of Reser Stadium and pulled off an upset.

Can they channel the magic again? ”

That’s some easy fluff at deadline….

      • It’s going to be the same shitty OL that’s doing the blocking no matter who’s packing the ‘ole pig skin so IMO the fuskies D isn’t doing much guessing and they don’t really give a damn who the RB’s are.

66-10 and that 10 could be generous.

        • Agreed. They’re going to knock the crap out of someone; the OL has their work cut out for them. Just saying maybe GA is strategic enough to at least counter what big Kev is saying.

  32. After rewatching the Civil War from last year, I have more confidence in our offense with DG at the helm. MM’s greatest value was his effectiveness keeping the ball on the zone read, which he complemented with good decision making and accurate throws on the short, easy throws they gave him.

This year we sacrificed the read option for Luton’s “downfield threat,” which was a huge net loss.

Another observation: Hungalu looks way slower this year and somehow became a worse tackler.

    • Hungalu has always been overrated.

The offense ran much better through McM. Anyone who doesn’t want to admit that has ulterior motives or doesn’t know football.

        • Tedford and Riley coached our team last year and this year? Fascinating.
GA clearly doesn’t know offense. He admits it himself. Own words. Another great argument, though, because appeal to authority fallacy always works…

          • MM would have been a liability in Riley’s offense. I haven’t seen Tedford’s FSU, but I’d imagine he would be the same there, too.

He was born to be an option QB. His mistake was committing to Riley instead of one of the 30 teams where his skill set was a good fit.

          • Why would he have been a liability? And an option QB?

McGiven screamed at him for four games until he finally started to call his own number. He was a pocket passer in a pro-set in HS. If Riley stayed, he would have never seen the field while Zach Kline started.

To top it all off, he decided to leave for another pro-set O. So what kind of QB do you think he believes himself to be?

      • Most of the people on here don’t know football as much as they like to think. I generally don’t even comment because i dont have time for an online argument.

      • MM had two games where the O worked better than anything we’ve seen this year. His other games were not better, except for the 2015 CW, which was better than the first game this year.

The O ran best against Cal last year.

I’m not sure who’s overrating Hungalu, but maybe you should let them know.

        • Washington State.

Everyone who hates McM because I liked him likes to ignore that game because it doesn’t fit the “awful defense” narrative.

          Good vs Utah, too.

          • I won’t ignore it. I won’t even go so far as to ignore a whole half, as you seem to be doing. MM pretty much lost that game in the third quarter. That was possibly his worst half of football ever. He was excellent in the first half.

And let’s get real. Wazzu’s D is not great. They’re opportune and will play contain very well. But their middle is so so soft. And last year it was even softer since Barber wasn’t allowed to play.

      • It did, but I don’t think it’s just because MM is a far superior QB. By the end of the year, he was maybe a C+ QB while Luton is a C-. The problem is McGiveth and Co. changed their approach to take advantage of a passing skill set Luton doesn’t seem to have, while still calling the read option plays that MM ran well, but Luton can’t.

We would have struggled to achieve our goal of making a bowl game with MM, too because of the guys calling the shots on offense.

  33. Petersen on Nall:

“Coach Kwiatkowski said he was curious to see how the defense would respond to a team that really pounds the ball. Do you agree?

“I always would agree with that. The one thing that we’re always passionate about is the run game on both sides. If you can run the ball it’s a long, hard day on a defense. If you can’t that makes things easier on us. (Oregon State) is probably the best at running the ball that we’ve seen. They’ve got some good running backs. (Ryan) Nall is fast, fast, fast. He’s in a style we haven’t seen yet. He bounces off things and he’s fast. So this will be a good test.””

  34. PHIL STEELE REPORT:

Last year the Beavers trailed 31-0 at halftime being outgained 333-84 (just 2.9 yards per play) with Washington letting up in the 2nd half and only winning 41-17. Washington has won 5 straight by 28 points per game after dropping 7 of the previous 8 meetings. Washington is on a 2nd straight road game while Oregon State is fresh off a bye. Oregon State was 3-2 at home vs the Pac-12 last year with their two losses by 5 & 4 points. Washington’s offense is not as potent as their 45 points per game would show as their defense and special teams have accounted for 6 TD’s this year. The offense itself has scored 34 points per game.

  35. Scanning OLive:

Barnes publicly backing Andersen, says “We have the right leader in place.” and contract extension was right thing to do….

    OSU tweaked offense in bye to accommodate Garretson’s ability to run, hoping to control clock, keep UW off field;

Villamin apparently stated early on this season it felt like “Andersen’s first year” with new schemes, now saying its not like 2015 at all and everyone has bought in…(?)

Hungalu stating that players are freelancing in games and displaying and a lack of discipline not displayed in practice…

ESPN has OSU’s remaining schedule at 7th most difficult in nation.

    • Players free lancing means they don’t believe in the game plan or trust their fellow players to get the job done. Maybe both. Real bad sign there.

      • Or maybe they’re not very smart, and poorly understand schemes, game plans, and how to follow through on execution.

I don’t say that facetiously. But if after spring and fall practices, and within season practices, and games, players are still doing the wrong thing, its a distinct possibility.

Another potential is that its a form of self-centeredness.

      • Or it means that you lose discipline after your D gets two sacks, and instead of dropping into coverage in the middle of the field like you’re supposed to be doing, you decide you want all the glory and run your own personal blitz.

I will agree on the poor coaching aspect. If anyone is doing this kind of thing, they need to sit and let the next guy play. I don’t care if the next guy isn’t as physically gifted. Who cares that you have the talent to do your job better than that guy if you’re not even doing your job?

          • But it seems like every busted play against us is just rolling through a space in the middle that should have someone there. It was posited a couple weeks ago by someone that playing nickle and dime packages might be the reason for that, and that DBs are less likely to stick their noses in the middle. But they’re great on contain.

    • To cover your head?

      For free popcorn?

      In which to vomit?

To pull of your head in disgust and in which to vomit your free popcorn?

To carry ear plugs which you charitably distribute when they embarrassingly play the chain saw/suffering-cow bawl?

C’mon man, don’t draw it out too long. What are you going to do with it?!?

  36. So Andersen is sitting at an awesome seven (7) wins after two+ years. It looks like my lofty eleven (11) OSU career win total is safe for another year. Andersen probably can’t exceed my total until sometime in 2019 if he lasts that long.

I don’t have to worry about Avezzano, total six (6) and Fertig, total ten (10) coming back any time soon, as they happen to be … well…dead. And that, my friends, would be one hell of a come back!

Only Dave Kragthorpe at age 84 could still come back and add a few wins to his total of seventeen.

Parker err Reser will be full of arrogant Huskie’s tomorrow. The only hope is for buckets of rain and a massive fender-bender (no injuries) on Hwy 34 to ruin their day.

  37. I have decided to donate my season tix for this year to a local organization.

I cannot in good conscious continue going to the games and supporting this coaching staff.

I support the players giving it their all out there on the field. I do not feel bad not going to the games in person because I donate to their scholarship fund. I will continue to back them up one hundred percent – they deserve that.

However, what I cannot, and will not tolerate, is this coaching staff throwing these guys under the bus in public. By public, that means the media. But it also means just out and about too. The coaches have absolutely no right talking sh*t about these guys to whomever can hear their conversation out in public.

This new coaching staff absolutely does not fit in in Corvallis. You’ve got several staff who are openly screwing around with female students. You’ve got other staff who aren’t very kind to people out in the community just doing their jobs.

    I’m done.

Hope Ed Ray can get this dumpster fire put out before next season.

    • Hey, can you donate your UW tix my way before you give them away?
Also, screwing around with female students? Aren’t they all over 18? Not sure there’s anything wrong with them dating students. Most young single people in Corvallis are students. Some of the staff are students as well.

      • Yea if you are single in Corvallis chances are you are going to be “forced” to get busy with a Student. The bigger issue with the staff should be that a large majority of them are not very good at coaching football not who they bone at night.

        • Well they could date people their age from Portland. No? Not like it’s a long drive.

I mean on one hand, cool, they’re like 50 and boning above their weight, but on the other it’s a bit creepy/predatory.

I’d be curious to hear who the coaches are, ages, and ages of the women, who instigated it, etc. Need more info.

          • Lol my guess is he is is talking about some of the younger dudes on staff. No chance Clune, Baldwin or Mcgiven if they are single are pulling any hot co-ed honeys. Although I have been surprised before.

          • I was thinking more along the lines of the grad assistants and quality control type guys, who are generally in their 20’s or young 30’s.
I think the older guys are married, for the most part(exception is Clune maybe?)

          • I have to admit, my first thought was, “wonder if the chicks involved in this are hot.”

What’s funny is the guy who originally wrote about it said he’s trading in his tickets because of this (adults having sex, which is legal), yet he didn’t trade them in when Riley glossed over a gang bang rape. He says this staff isn’t Corvallis, yet Riley and his “boys will be boys”/gang rape mentally was?

      • Trading in my tickets due to the coaching staff throwing players under the bus.

Some of the staff (not grad assistants – they are basically students themselves!) screwing around with undergrad girls isn’t my main issue here.

I will not renew next year if Andersen and his cronies are still around. That is 4 less tickets.
The school is majorly hurting right now due to lackluster ticket sales. Something has got to give.

  38. Just noticed Nebraska @ Illinois starts in about 1 hour.
I think this is only Nebraska’s 2nd road game this year.

Also, WSU hosts USC tonight. WSU has yet to play a road game this year through 5 games.

  39. I’ll be in the “Chat” for the Nebraska game.

That’s what it’s good for. Non-OSU games (that OSU fans are interested in) that would otherwise clog up this thread.

  40. Ucks first in DB pass breaks up in the nation according to Dave Weinstat on FS1. Keith Heyward-Johnson leading the way there.

Are we ready for Jonathan Smith at Head Coach and KHJ at Def Cord?

      • Nothing. Just like throwing 5 TDs in a PAC 12 game and winning a CW proves nothing to the guys who hate him simply because I knew he was the best option before GA did.

      • Derek Carr thinks it proves something, too. Trent Dilfer was a pretty good NFL player and won a Super Bowl as well. Fresno has more QB pedigree than Oregon State.

        • Yeah… the Ravens’ QB is why they won a SB.

But you’re correct. IIRC, Tedford was Dilfer’s coach. The Carr brothers don’t lend anything to that story. They would have started anywhere.

I’m not sure any of these coaches are actually any good at evaluating or developing QBs, per se. I’m starting to think the talent has just dilapidated to the point that there are only a couple good players every year. There are so many college teams with just garbage on their rosters.

Dilfer would be a friggin’ superstar in today’s NCAA.

          • You slight everything that isn’t OSU or fitting your narrative.

Dilfer did win that Super Bowl by not losing it. Again, “game managing” getting a slight. I’m sure all the Ravens D appreciated what he did. Serious question: would you take Dilfer or Luton? If you say Luton you’re a bigger homer than I thought.

Alex Smith, that Hogan dude from Stanford….all really boring game managers with “noodle arms” who have done great things on the field. The list of noodle armed game managers who’ve done well is enormous. You can start with Montana. The list of big armed bozos who can’t hit a barn door is enormous, too, at the grocery store’s checkout bagging section.

God, bringing back nightmares of being a kid and the Jets drafting Browning Nagle because he could, “Throw a ball 70 yards from his knees”…even as infants my friends and I were like “So what? Can he throw it to the WRs?” Nope.

          • Yes, the Ravens appreciated him so much they cut him as soon as he won a SB.

And I’ll take a dump on anything Fresno for any reason on any day. It’s fucking Fresno. Just because it’s a school that I hate even more than the town itself doesn’t mean I’m going to let up.

I don’t know what, “Dilfer would be a friggin’ superstar in today’s NCAA,” means to you. To me, that means he is better than 99.9% of all other NCAA QBs today. To you it means I’m drawing a comparison to Luton?

Dilfer, Hogan and Smith don’t have noodle arms. I’m not sure why you would think any of them do. They can make the throws on the NFL level. We’re talking about QBs who can’t make all the throws on the NCAA level. If you think there’s little to no difference, you’d be wrong.

LDR is one of your cannon arms with scattershot success.

None of what you say I wrote fits any narrative of mine. Perhaps the words I wrote are the narrative itself?

And the New Jersey Jets have (and have had) weak ownership. It’s why they’re still in New Jersey.

    • Hmmm… not seeing this anywhere except on that tweet. Tedford has refused to say who would start. If he told his players but told them to keep it on the down low, what does it say that someone is not keeping it on the down low?

  41. Lol good ol ESPN with a graphic that showed Sean Mannion from Arizona state just a bit ago as Falk passed him in yards.. announcers got it right but the graphic was wrong.. who the fuck does that??

    • Reminds me of the time the ducks “…won their second title in baseball” – per The Augusta Chronicle after the Beavs did it in 2007. Beavs get no respect.

  42. So NU handles Illinois…faces next week what has been so far been a very productive Wisconsin team – though against Utah State, FAU, BYU.

Wisconsin’s qb completing 70% (only 70 attempts so far), 8 TDs 1 INT, running game put up 826 yards on 148 attempts for 5.6 YPC, and the starting freshman RB is averaging 8.3 YPC. Sounds like some big boy football there.

      • Not really. It’s chock full of hokey shit about unicorns and rainbows.

If you look for the same author’s take on LDR now, I’d imagine he has written some pretty mean things about the kid.

LDR was third string to start the year. I wonder why he didn’t run away.

    • The memory of Andersen telling him that “you’ll never play” at Oregon State still burns in Del Rio’s mind like it was yesterday.

“It was Tuesday about 6:50 in the morning when they told me, and I still had to go to practice because it was during spring drills,” Del Rio recalls. “It hurt; it hurt a lot. I asked them, ‘So do you want me to transfer?’ That’s when they said, ‘Look, we’re not telling you to do anything; we’re just telling you that you’ll never play here.'”

      Wow!

And people saying McM wasn’t run out of town. Lol. Fools.

      • We’ve got this phenom, his name is Seth Collins. He’ll hurdle the shit out of you. Might as well hit the showers, Luke. It’s Seth’s team now.

        • Yes, hey McM, we have this new QB Garreston, oh wait Blount, no wait I mean Luton. Sorry McM. :) GA and co know how is screw with QB’s. How do any of them still have jobs!!

          • We’ve got this freshman walkon, Blount. He’ll sortof play ok the shit out of you, Marcus. Might as well hit the showers, Marcus. It’s Connor’s team n……….what’s that? He sprained his knee? McMaryion! Get your ass in there. Don’t get any crazy ideas about winning games though. It’ll make us look bad.

          • So do people want a coach that’s a pussyfooter bullshitter, or someone who’e direct? I don’t think Del Rio is very good. I guess GA could’ve strung him along.

        • It removes doubt about one player. And even then it’s not like they told him to leave. They just told him he would be running the scout team. I think that’s an accurate assessment of his skills.

How embarrassing would it have been if he stayed and then was forced to play due to injury or circumstance, like he is this year at Florida?

          Exaggerate much?

  43. Watching WSU beat USC…Good players or coaches won’t come to Corvallis? Apparently good players and coaches have no problem with the isolation and crappy facilities at WSU.

  44. Seems like Erickson had some decent years….that other guy, left WSU, that went down south and preferred strip clubs to his new HC job…

      • Has he completed anything more than three yards downfield?

Florida’s run game looks good. I hear the announcer dog the O-line when LDR holds it too long… something about no consistency in the run game. But they’re just opening holes.

  45. now if we had truly investigative reporting in Oregon, someone in the press pool would ask Andersen on Monday whether what Del Rio says about being run off is true. But they would rather scout out the archives for juvenile rehabilitation in Pierce County, Washington.
