Last year and earlier this year some guy showed up here and said something like, “All is not well with GA and the team” and then left. I read some other rumblings like that on other sites. Anyone know what was behind that?

We now have someone saying the coaches are sleeping with co-eds. Sure, legal, but unprofessional and a bit taboo.

I sensed the team chemistry issues in the Nall/Luton interview. Something is going on.

If anyone has info drop it, or email me (contact button on the right).

    • Which troll? It wasn’t that Duck or Husky guy.

Next time I’ll IP check it.

I thought Angie once mentioned something like that on a podcast, too. Could be wrong.

  1. Via email:

I know a guy who worked for a hotel which the team stayed at last year. Apparently the assistants were getting completely hammered Friday nights before the game. I mean like HAMMERED.. in the “game prep” room. Interesting. Also, some talk of a potential sexual harassment deal around the same time / place.

It sounds like this staff thinks they’re in college rather than coaching it. Man children?

    • Sure hope this stuff isn’t true….. Dennis E got drunk but at least he got stuff done on the field!….And no I am not saying the stuff Dennis did was right either.

      • Guy knows the source well. Asked how credible the source is. “Very” is the response.

I mean maybe more people speak up and can cross verify, etc, with someone willing to go on record. Something seems up, b/c the past few springs we’ve heard “all is not well”, but it ended there with people afraid to talk.

      • Just saying it’s hard to believe something when someone says they know someone vs hearing it independently from two different sources.

Hearing it from on person who isn’t the source is pretty unreliable. Otherwise it’s just crazy rumor spreading. Source plus an unrelated source confirming would tell me it’s true.

    • My hairdresser’s cousin’s barber’s lawyer’s girlfriend didn’t say anything about this. It must not be true.

All kidding aside, that’s WAY different than just being human. That would be unprofessional.

  2. Talked to Isaiah Hodgins and he said he is looking forward to a coaching change and thinks that if this is done before next season, we can be good. I feel bad for him and i feel like he may choose to transfer

    • Yeah did he know why he didn’t play? Because GA says he didn’t….if the above post is true maybe the OC was hung over and just forgot about him?

    • I’d sure as hell transfer if GA isn’t fired. Wouldn’t even cost him eligibility since he can redshirt still.

If I were any player on this team with a redshirt to burn I’d be finding a new FBS program for sure, if I didn’t have a redshirt year I’d still rather go play FCS ball than remain on this sinking ship.

I know its wishful thinking since OSU is foolish enough to keep GA but I just can’t fathom how they can. And I bet players transfer in mass, Wonder if Nall will graduate in June? Could see him headed someone for his senior year. Hell, would be better off taking his chances as an undrafted free agent even if he hasn’t graduated.

      • Nall could get drafted and likely will go that route. Scouts know about Nall and how GA is using him.

I expect a lot of transfers. Guys like Garcia were smart and got out while they could.

Mass transfers will create quite a domino effect. It’s going to get interesting. This doesn’t seem like the WA or CO rebuilds.

        • I agree he could get drafted but think if he does it will be in rounds 6 or 7 which is actually worse than being undrafted for most guys.

I agree scouts know about him; I just don’t think he has huge NFL potential.

He just needs to decide if he is better off getting another free year of college (grad school prices at that) and being guaranteed the ability to play football for another year or if its time to take his shot and maybe have to get a real job in 2018.

To me, he is a 3rd string or practice squad guy in the NFL and when you are that guy you are just as likely to have no job.

      • Because evidence suggests that’s not true. No posts from the IP, and the username was just registered today. If you can pull up posts where he spams….

        • I didn’t say he has spammed here before.

Plug his handle into the google machine if you don’t want to believe me. I’ve had experience with him before.

        • How can I reach out to you personally angry? Im not a spammer, simply real life friends with Isaiah. Players are humans too and can befriend other people. If this “jack” person and anyone else wants to think im lying, they are simply bought into the bullshit this staff feeds them. Thank you

  3. Off topic: I am interested in what people think OSU could do to “moneyball” their way to success.

I think we have to acknowledge that OSU does have limitations (self inflicted or real) and I am curious on thoughts about what a coach could do to still compete within those limitations (and once you become truly competitive many of those limitations would go away).

And I am talking about getting to those 10 win seasons on occasions, not just go 7-5 every year which I honestly think just takes a semi-competent coaching staff.

Thoughts? I have some ideas but am curious what others think.

        • Yeah… the one guy who can bankrupt both a casino and a pro football league in America is who we should associate with to attract recruits.

          • Or maybe we can talk about how he is a shit for brains builder who stiffs working men and women who do the actual work for him. Then he files junk lawsuits in order to bleed them dry before they can recoup pennies on the dollar from the fuck face loser of a con man.

          • No I don’t.

At that time in his life he was losing court cases for him and his father being racist fucks… and then ignoring the courts and going and doing it some more anyway.

            There’s no reason to wonder.

      • If brad pitt were on the staff then based on the rumors I’ve seen, we’d be more concerned about him making passes at the members of the team and not the co-eds.

    • Go with Speed everywhere. When we were good that’s what happened. We may have been undersized with the presidents on the line and guys like Nick, Rich, Doggette, D nasty etc at backer but we would fly around on defense. That created a culture and defensive identity.

On offense it doesn’t matter as much if you pick an identity and can find skill players and more importantly linemen that fit that mold you can sell a vision and more tactical plan for how you will use players, We have none of that right now.

  4. I live in Corvallis and have friends, more than one, in the Athletic Department who coach other sports and have offices in Gill. To a man, (and woman) “GA is an arrogant a-hole”. I’m told he showed up on campus like the savior and big man, sequestered himself in the Valley Center away from the rest of the athletic department and has made himself distant and unapproachable. He has presented himself like this to our most esteemed and successful coaches. There is some real dislike for the man within the University itself.

In the community, it’s not uncommon to run into Pat Casey at Winco, Scott Rueck out at CVHS baseball camps, Laura Berg at Starbucks on and on, and they’re always friendly and outgoing. They’re part of the Corvallis community. Riley, Banker, Cavanugh, were always at Home Depot and willing to visit. I’ve never seen GA, anywhere but on the sidelines. That’s fine, maybe he’s just private, but when he showed up Day 1 and closed practices he shut out a lot of dad’s and sons and other locals who enjoyed hanging around the team. Spring game is a joke now, clearly GA could care less about fans, the local community and the fan experience.

Lastly, I’ve got a buddy who lives literally across the street from GA in Southtown. His one exchange, in 3 years, with GA was when his son’s dog got off it’s leash and got on GA’s lawn. GA barked at his son and told him “Get that dog on a leash”. My buddies opinion of GA? “Uptight and anal.”

The only thing I can swear is true is being locked out of practices, but I believe the people telling me the other things, included the one driving by Prothro field two weeks ago while football practice was going on and seeing one of the football players urinating on the side of the basketball practice facility.

    • I live in Corvo as well. This makes a ton of sense. I really enjoyed seeing Riley and company in public and going to the open practices as a kid. the vibe is way different

    • “There is some real dislike for the man within the University itself.”
And, he has the AD in his corner?? This could impact other sports. Hopefully coaches like those you mention are competitive enough to stay focused while this shakes out.

        • Yep, no AD is going to publicly trash a head coach, even if he’s not pleased. It’s his job to keep the dirty laundry behind closed doors. If he’s doing his job right, he’s already having conversations with GA about staff changes. If not then Barnes is part of the problem. It’s also possible that GA has told him to go F’ himself, and there isn’t much Barnes can do about it unless he wins the lottery.

  5. “You’d have to ask Kevin McGiven that and Coach Phillips. The passing game coordinator, the offensive coordinator. I have no idea. I’m trying to do what I do and I can’t function and handle every kid that goes in and out. So to my knowledge he was available. I didn’t see him on the injury report. I’m sure you guys didn’t either.”

    Leadership.

    • Wow. Does he have any involvement in the game planning? You kinda have to know who’s going to be on the field, or is it all just a big surprise to him on a Saturday afternoon?

“Oh holy shit, look I guess Garrettson is playing quarterback for us today”.

      • Idk… I watch Wazzu, and Leach doesn’t pay attention to his D at all. Most of the time he’s talking to his O on the bench.

While it’s not the kind of delegation I would do, it is generally acceptable.

        • That doesn’t mean Leach doesn’t check in with defensive coaches during the week or during the game and it sure as fuck doesn’t mean he wouldn’t know if a defensive starter was a healthy scratch.

All head coaches delegate, all (but Andersen apparently) still know when and why a starter is playing.

          • I want proof that any other football coach has ever told reporters he doesn’t know why a player didn’t play. Yep.

Without that proof, I stand by my assertion that only Andersen would be that clueless. You are the one claiming many coaches (you even named one) wouldn’t know, I call bullshit.

Not that I expect you to actually defend a position.

When did Rick Pitino ever not know why one of his players wasn’t playing in a game? Can you site an example?

          • Many don’t know. That’s just a fact.

Could he have just said no comment?

            Sure.

Honestly, how did anyone notice any of our WRs besides Villy weren’t on the field?

          • Sure, many head coaches don’t know why a starter doesn’t play.

            Sure….Keep telling yourself that.

            Lol

I know your roll here is to be the troll but even for you this claim is just embarrassing.

          • It’s just the way he is. He knows.

Remember when Storm didn’t play at Michigan? The answer was just as hokey. He deferred to the doctors or whomever. The point is that we don’t need to know, and he’ll be the goat for his players.

He is consistent in this approach. If you don’t like it, that’s because it’s by design.

I’m sure Moran will run a background check on Hodgins and tell us all about it soon enough.

          • Still, a lot of coaches don’t know acute personnel decisions. They can ask their position coaches and get an, “I’ll tell you later, trust me.” I think you can appreciate that a head man during a game just doesn’t have the time to spend on one kid. And a presser after a game doesn’t give him time to get the low down.

          • But seriously, if he’s going to defer offense questions to big Kev, when is he going to be sitting there next to GA? Honestly I cannot see those two populating the same room after that presser.

        • That may be true, but Leach knows what he wants on offense and makes sure it happens. There is no identity crisis.

Andersen claims to be an defensive coach. He played center. As a D coordinator, he had to dissect offenses and scheme against them. I’ve never understood how he could claim to understand or care so little about the offensive side of the ball. Except to say OSU needs 40+ points and several explosive plays per game.

He’s starting to look like the distant CEO who just collects the $$$ and really does not manage the “company’s” work or product. He facilitates “transactions” to look busy – otherwise known as annual reassignments of subordinates, which apparently are supposed to manage the appearance of progress?

    • GA has been a disaster at press conferences his entire career. This may fly in Logan, where there’s not exactly a lot of media attention and fans are happy so long as you can win a few games. It doesn’t cut it when you’re coaching in a P5 conference.

Sure, sometimes as a coach you get questions you don’t really want to answer. There’s a way to deal with them. After all, that’s where the term “coach speak” comes from. But GA is utterly incapable of pulling off coach speak, so instead we get “I don’t know,” an outright lie, or some garbled attempt at coach speak that’s completely incoherent and/or invites a bunch of speculation.

  6. They might be benched, for all we know. I wonder if some of the players are openly questioning some of what they are being told to do (rightly or wrongly).

    • … or missing curfew… or drinking… or whatever.

      I know!

Let’s make up shit about the coaches since we have no clue about what we really don’t have a right to know.

      • Exactly my point on Hodgins…. all we know is he didn’t play was it for a very good reason?…we don’t know…. but it sure seems crazy that GA didn’t know either right after the game….Jack you made a very good example of Leach….. he doesn’t pay a lot of attention it seems when the D is on the field but I also haven’t seen him with answers as to which players didn’t play and why when pressed by the press….DA has and if my memory serves me it’s not the first time either….if he has zero clue maybe he should start bringing McCrappy with him to answer for the offense…..

        • Ftr, Hodgins was suited and on the sideline.

News on him is that it’s an in-house issue, and it’s none of my business. GA is willing to take all flack for him.

          • Btw, did anyone who reported on this one answer bother to ask those he deferred to? Basic journalism says, “Okay, I’ll ask them what’s up since it’s so important for me to know.”

All it takes is a text or an email, if they’re the lazy type.

  7. McMaryion throws for 24-32, 2 TDs (10 and 40 yard passes), 1 Int and 296 yards last night in his first start for Fresno State leading the Bulldogs to a victory over Nevada….hmmm, I guess he just doesn’t possess the skill set to throw the ball…as a side note, he threw for 12 consecutive completions…..

  8. I had heard and read where GA lost the locker room after naming Luton as the starter and MM transferred to Fresno State. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but the decision to start Luton resulting in MM’s transfer sure put the Beavs into a downward spiral. It’s 1-11 in 2017…UnBeaverable and totally RiDuckulous!

    • McM might become the biggest name in OSU history. His departure could ruin this staff and team for decades, like the Fred Milton situation.

I knew the team was divided over that. Even in interview, GA said that most of the team was good with the decision, and then added except for a small faction. Sounds like that faction was either larger than he wanted to admit, or it grew as they saw Luton live. Teammates really liked McM, so probably right from the start it was a major divide between players and staff. If you watch all the videos before that decision, players were really juiced up, and after they went into coach-speak mode and were being diplomatic in their language about the decision. You could, tell, though, they didn’t like it. The Luton/Nall interview after game 2 was also telling when Nall calls him “this guy”…

Andersen is proving to be very manipulative, too. Nall complained about a low workload after PSU, and that’s when he called Jake “this guy”, and then he gets only 7 carries vs MN. He played head games with LDR “You’re not playing, but we’re not telling you to transfer”, etc.

The guy is mental. He’s going to destroy the program. Can’t believe how wrong I was on him. I thought he was a savior. Wow.

      • I don’t see how that is “head games” with LDR. He’s not kicking him out, just telling him he won’t play. The kid has the option to stick around if he wants to or thinks he can change the staff’s mind. GA inherited a player that he didn’t want, but didn’t want to kick him out. Don’t really see the issue..

My previous comment apparently got deleted, but do we know that GA “didn’t help him transfer?” I would hope that the staff would help him move on to a school that wanted him.

        • You didn’t quote the follow up sentence. “His departure could ruin this staff and team for decades, like the Fred Milton situation. ”

Considering Milton is the reason for the 28 year streak, it’s not hyperbole to think messing up the QB so badly, losing everyone on the team, non-merit based system, 1-11 record, coordinators fired, etc will lead to a very long decline. I’m hearing “mass transfers” this offseason, which means walk-ons will be scholarship’d and then playing next year. We’re back to square one due to that GA decision.

Sure, things can change, hence the word “could” in the sentence you chose not to quote. Petras is a nice QB. If he can start and perform as a Freshman he’ll save GA’s hide to some degree. At this point keeping all our recruits and avoiding mass transfers has to be the goal. If we get mass transfers we’ll be like Marshall 1970.

          • If the following year everyone is a walk-on, what’s the difference how it happened?

Yeah it was hyperbole b/c it won’t be everyone transferring, but I think 10 to 15 will.

            WE ARE OSU!

  9. If Mr. Big Boy Pants has no idea about offensive players starting or not, do we really know if he “named” Luton the starter? Is McPussy running the entire offensive show? Maybe McSnatch is the guy that ran 3M out of town and if that is the case, why is GA even the head coach?

  10. From Will’s dad: “Hi y’all greetings from the great state of Texas. So sorry y’all are going through a little rough spot. Will is enjoying his new team and teammates at SMU. They racked up their fourth win yesterday. Imagine that four wins in just one month.

Transferring was the best decision I, err Will, could have made. That weird Yankee from Utah gave me, err Will, the creeps. Couldn’t understand a word he said. What in the hell does a process have to do with winning a football game? Last time I checked it had to do with knocking people on their asses!

Well… best of luck the remainder of the year. Looks like we’ll be going bowling!!

  11. This whole situation is a master plot by the evil genius Barry Alvarez to make my college sports fandom miserable. Mission accomplished.

  12. OT (back to the UW game):
From the GT: “For the first time this season, OSU was not led in tackles by a safety. Inside linebacker Manase Hungalu had 11 total stops and outside linebacker Bright Ugwoegbu had seven.”

    • Golly.

When you concentrate on running the damn ball, your D starts to play like it practices against a team who runs the damn ball.

      Who knew?

    • His other throw was even better. 40 yards in the air. Not bad for a noodle arm.

Edit: that’s the one, closer to 50 yards in the air for ol’ “noodle arm”.

      • So he can drop it in the bucket every now and then.

I imagine you can throw that pass, angry. I could easily do it when I was younger. Don’t make it out to be some show of a strong arm.

        • I know a former baseball player around 60 who can make that throw. Saw him throwing the pigskin around and was shocked he was chucking it 50 yards with ease and asking people if they wanted to play catch… was pretty funny.

      • Here you go:
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MicaX7Eenoo

Log throw at about 1:10. 50 yards is about right. Look at that frozen rope that didn’t take the QB’s all on a really long wind-up.

His nicest pass is the one at 1:47 (and repeated about a minute later). He didn’t make that throw last year.

Man! I know it’s a Fresneck highlight reel, but Nevada sucks.

        • The one at 1:10 is not impressive, and he didn’t lead the receiver.

The other one at 1:47 is better.

In the offseason, when the QBs and WRs were working together, some of the receivers said MM and DG were throwing the ball harder…[paraphrasing] ‘everyone’s throwing harder this year.”

  13. Who were the starting receivers for OSU on Saturday? I know Villy and Collins, but who took Hodgins place?
I hope the reporters get back on GA today about that. He’s had plenty of time to commiserate with Phillips and Mcgiven to get the low down.
Villy had how many dropped passes? And did Seth have a single positive yardage play? You’d think with Togiai out, you’d need another tall body out there with good hands.

  14. That’s crazy. What is this? Some tyoe of seniority squabble? Hawkins is not a starting wide receiver. I have it on very good authority that Hodgins was not injured at all and actually had one of his best weeks at practice last week, according to people close to the team. Phillips needs to be brought into the press conference today. Sounds like this wasn’t any type of disciplinary situation either, so why the hell does he not even get into the game for a single rep? GA needs to get a grip on his offensive staff.

    • GA needs to find out who the toxic coaches are and remove them. I really hope GA can get this resolve this, but I dont have much faith he will at this point. Although in his presser he said that its on him again, but added I hired them…. He trailed off at that point.

      • Pretty hard to remove yourself as the head coach while keeping the assistants.

In all seriousness, I know i heard or read from a presser from GA, “I hired these coaches, so their performance is on me.” I really do think GA would fire McGiven if he had a legit OC to replace him with(which he must feel this isn’t the case) otherwise McGiven would either be demoted or fired by now. I could see GA “cleaning house” at the end of the season and bringing in new assistants; much like what Mike Riley was forced to do with his “buddies” in Nebraska.

        • Maybe he can tell McLovin “You’re not going to coordinate the offense.”

McLovin: “You firing me? Or you want me to resign?!?”

Andersen: “I’m not going to tell you what to do. But you’re not coordinating the offense.”

Then hand it over to Baldwin….

    • I repeat my assertion that he questioned the coach’s coaching. This isn’t 2nd grade and Phillips is not the principal. Phillips should listen, at least.

    • Wasn’t this one of the Wisconsin complaints about GA as he was leaving–good players mysteriously not getting in games? Correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s something I think I read from back then.

McGiven wasn’t in the picture at that time. It was GA.

    • Maybe Phillips likes Hodgins and didn’t want to break him in his OC’s whacky O.

Once McGiven is demoted or has a talk with Pat Haden at an airport, he can put him back in without fear of losing his future star.

      Yeah… that makes sense.

  15. With all these things said above at least there is a break this week as it is not a home game.

The weather was nice for the game last Sat. drinking help me to ignore the field of play. Sadly, I found myself leaving with over 10 min to play. Sure I paid for those last moments of the game but the cost benefit ratio just was not in it for me to stay.

  16. Finally found the time to read Fooled by Randomness. When Taleb discusses “probabilistic accounting,” I was reminded about the staff’s switch from MM to Luton.

There were a number of possible outcomes of keeping MM as QB, with the perceived ceiling be lower, but we already saw what was probably the floor in 2016 (4 wins). A 4 win season, though disappointing, probably wouldn’t have been the end of GA.

On the other hand, there were also numerous possible outcomes of switching to Luton. Maybe adding the deep ball to the offense would have turned this into a bowl team. On the other hand, you have the current outcome of nuking the 2016 offense’s capbailities and possibly hurting team morale (all just conjecture, as far as I’m concerned).

GA (or maybe just Kevin, since GA doesn’t seem to care at all about offense) decided to gamble and try to force it this year with Luton, rather than staying with the more proven commodity.

Under probabilistic accounting, the outcome isn’t as important as the process because outcomes are always influenced by randomness/luck. Over time, you may not hit as many home runs with a risk avoidance strategy, but you’ll do a better job of avoiding 1-11 seasons. Some coaches may luck out with good players and be perceived as good coaches when, in reality, the process was flawed, but randomness intervened. GA likes to say “I know the process works. I’ve seen it work,” but it’s quite likely he’s confusing luck-based results with process-based results. He doesn’t have that many data points to work with.

All this is to say, I no longer trust the process.

  17. Crawford left the game late with a back injury, apparently.

At least the young corners are getting game experience. Maybe our goal for this year should be making sure the team isn’t shellshocked Week 1 of 2018 in Columbus.

    • Thanks for the tip. It’s already on my reading list!

Football teams need to be open to bringing in SME’s outside of the sport in order to improve their processes. Someone asked previously how OSU could “moneyball” its way to success, and I think that’s the way to do it.

    • Ugh. Apart from his music, I enjoyed is voice over part as “Lucky” on “King of the Hill”.
I guess “Free Fallin'” partly describes the OSU football season.
Last dance with Mary Jane. One more time to kill the pain.

    • What’s interesting about the NV shooting is that none of my friends care about it. All they said was “See we should ban guns” type of posts. Usually there’s all this sympathy for the victims nonsense to gain brownie points, but none of it this time. My only guess is because it happened at a Country and Western music festival and the assumption is they were all Republican hicks. When that gay night club was shot up it was in the news for weeks with nonstop outrage.

      People are so confused.

      • They are so used to this scene, it doesn’t register. And how does someone get 9 rifles into a hotel room wo anyone taking notice?

      • I’m not seeing a difference in coverage really.
What I find interesting is this guy apparently wasn’t a “gun guy” and didnt even own any guns as recently as 2 years ago, according to his brother. How did gain access to so many firearms in a short time and then also train himself to cause so much damage? Sure, I guess it’s as simple as pulling the trigger and the weapon does most of the work, but from the audio I heard last night, this guy was unloading clip after clip after clip for several minutes with very little pause between reloadings or re-arming himself. It sounded almost like there were multiple people shoiting with how rapidly the shots were being fired off.
Also, if fully automatic is technically not available to the public, did this guy teach himself to modify weapons to make them fully automatic? For a novice, is this really that simple to pull off? I’m sure somebody knowledgable about firearms could weigh in.

Lastly, did the guy just snap? Or was this something he had been planning for weeks/months/years? Why the chosen target audience? Did he just hate noisy concerts or was he trying to send a specific message? There’s a ton of unanswered questions surrounding this event which make ot hard to know which questions to ask at this point.

I can’t imagine how helpless the crowd must have felt, not knowing where it was all coming from, and with the chaos theat ensued. I could hear people on the video confused about what the noise was and some people yelling to their friends/family to “get down”, but then really would getting down have helped much when the shooter was up so high? At that point it was just chance if you were going to get hit or not, which is just terrifying.

      • If our offense doesn’t improve, which I don’t see it doing that this game, we will maybe get 1 TD if not a field goal. I would say we will get 1-2 INT, and 1-2 Fumbles(both offensively and defensively). Other than that, our offense will continue to struggle if we try to force DG to be a pro-style QB instead of a spread type QB that he is capable of being. We will continue to run Shotgun, we will continue to run “Spread looks” but not actually run the spread the way it’s supposed to be run. The defense will look good for the first half, but will they be able to run the ball against USC? I honestly wasn’t able to watch the first(best half) of the game this last weekend. So all I have is majority of the 3rd quarter and about 3-5 minutes of the 4th before I decided to turn the game off.

    • Can’t watch it now. Is it worth watching though?
Did he address the Hodgins situation or just defer it to other coaches? Did he address that his offense still looks like they’ve never played a college football game before?

      • 18:30 mark he addresses the question of why he doesn’t know who’s in the game, etc. It’s not a great answer. Basically he delegates to them and their judgment.

        • The frequent reference to “I’ve been doing this for 28 years” tends, for me, to confirm some of the posts above about how GA takes an “I’m the savior” stance which leads to poor relationships with members of the Athletic Department.

        • The way GA runs his program sounds a lot like the style of my varsity coach growing up…delegated decisions of who plays and who doesn’t play to the assistants rather than looking at past history, who works well together to offset weaknesses rather they just say, ‘fuck it, we’ll put the strongest weight lifting 5 out there and it doesn’t matter if they don’t understand technique, or the entire playbook, but by God we’ll have the strongest players out there!’ That’s fine in pee-wee football, but there comes a time when the brain has to take over and be able to out think or out technique the guy in front of you. Bull rushing works great for a few plays, then it becomes ineffective because then the other team expects the bull rush every time and will figure out how to stop said bull rush because you only give them one move to focus on stopping.

  18. James Hodgins, Isaiah’s father, agreed to stop by here and give an update on what’s going on. I asked him on Twitter if he’d be willing, and he said sure. Should be interesting to hear it straight from the man.

  19. GA is grating on my ears and mind. He started the slide by the way McM was handled. Lost half the team, then doubled down by attacking X Crawford at a post game presser, followed by attacking Villy at another post-game presser, Nall is suspiciously left out of the game-plan in a game without GA’s input, Arnold doesn’t start again without GA’s input, Luton is hurt and DG is prepped during a bye week again without GA’s input, now Hodgins is benched but GA has no knowledge of it.

What does he do but talk tough and cash checks? He isn’t a defensive coach, although that is his reputation. He isn’t a program builder either, although that is his reputation. He spent a short time at Southenr Utah, a few years at Utah State, when the MWC was at its weakest, then rode a 2 yr gravy train in Wiscy. I don’t see him winning at OSU. He seems to be a petty dictator surrounded by immature and incapable coaches who have all been promoited beyond their abilities.

Some guys on the team must be tired of the drama, some must be fed up, some may be all in still, but how can there be any team chemistry at this point. I don’t see them winning another game.

  20. Eggers with an article on Jonathan Smith, who now has 6 years with Petersen.

“Does Smith aspire to be a head coach one day?

“I think so,” he says, “but my favorite part of the job is the on-field coaching. Nowadays, head coaches have so many other responsibilities for the overall program.

“I know this: I would do it, for sure. But I’m going to be selective. You really get just one crack at it. I want it to be the right time, right place. I don’t think about it a ton. I’m enjoying what I’m doing. I have a great job, I get paid well, and I get to work with great guys. It would need to be a special opportunity for me to leave.”

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/373508-257236-ex-beaver-in-a-good-place-at-uw

      • Look at helfrich. I think what he means is, you get 1 crack at being a successful head coach and being able to keep your job as a coach. Sounds like he’s hinting that Oregon state might be that place, but it’s not the right time yet. I’m sure he wants to be able to take over a program that doesn’t have the cupboards bare and he can get quality assistants in the coaching ranks. How good is his network of coaches being from Boise st and now Washington?

        • Also, look at Brent Brennan, he got the head coaching job at his alma mater in San Jose State. So it is possible for a coach to want to be the head coach at his alma mater; it’s just rare they do as their first head coaching job.

    • “Nowadays, head coaches have so many other responsibilities for the overall program.”

And y’all are bitching because GA doesn’t micro manage every aspect of the team. Guess it’s not that unusual.

  21. A few thoughts…

I’m tired of hearing about MM…..he is not a pac 12 starter….his transfer did not divide the team

I actually like GA’s pressers and interviews for the most part…..better than Riley.

I don’t know what to make of the stuff saying GA is disliked, and an arrogant A-hole…..he seems like a straight shooter….maybe a bit gruff at times….I’ve kind of appreciated that about him.

I still feel like he’s a good X’s and O’s coach, but his coordinators are lacking.

This season is lost and I’ve been watching to see if GA loses the team, and/or loses in recruiting……the narrative seems to be heading that way…..I believe we were 0-10 on the top 10 Oregon recruits for 2018…..and hearing some of the takes above……it’s disturbing.

    • That’s one interpretation, and you might be right. But if he gets emotional on his returns to Corvallis, and has fond memories, wants to raise a family, maybe Corvallis could be the place? I think the right situation includes a QB to build around.

I like that he’s had offensive development under Erickson, Riley, and offensive and defensive development under Petersen. He also likely learns organizational skills, attention to detail, and program building/maintenance under Petersen. After Browning is done at UW, I expect people will come calling for Smith.

I’d rather see what a young motivated Jonathan Smith could do with Petras than Andersen/McLovin….maybe year 2 of Petras?

Given both Andersen’s nomadic history and the direction this team is taken, it makes sense for Barnes to be thinking about a replacement and developing a pool of coaching prospects to pursue. I’d put Smith in that pool.

And unlike Andersen’s assuming the beta role to Wittingham’s alpha, I suspect Smith would relish the challenge of beating UW.

      • What does that last sentence even mean?

You do know that Wittingham is the head coach at Utah, and Smith is a beta at UW? Andersen and Wittingham are two alphas who get to think about relishing a win against UW. Smith is an actual beta who would really dislike it a UW loss right now.

        Your suspicions don’t make sense.

        • Yeah, I just get the sense that Andersen is still “subordinate” to his former boss/HC Wittingham, somehow not mentally ready to beat him. I could be totally wrong about that.

I think Smith in contrast would not have such a hang up and would enjoy the challenge of beating Petersen.

          • You could be totally wrong about a sense you can’t competently convey in words?

            Impossible!

At least we don’t have a recent article on Smith contradicting your sense of him. That would be embarrassing.

          • I do think Andersen puts Whitt and Utah on a pedestal.

I don’t get everybody’s love for Jonathan Smith. I’ve gotten the impression UW fans are not real pleased with his play-calling at UW. Talk about a risky hire.

          • Are you saying GA doesn’t game plan as hard against Utah? Or he tells his players not to play as hard against Utah? How does this “subordinate” state translate to our team not beating Utah?

  22. You guys seriously don’t like Mike Parker? Who cares about the napkin thing, Parker is money…….if you think otherwise I’d consider questioning your judgement on other matters as well.

  23. Say what you want about McM, but his last two starts at QB have been pretty noteworthy for two programs.. Ends the eight year Civil War losing streak and is at the helm for Fresno’s first win against a FBS opponent since 2015.

    • Who knows, but the prudent approach would have been to name MM starter and if he sucked, put in the JC guy. Team would have seen the results and no locker room issues. Now we are short a QB with Brett Favre Jr out.

      • We’re short a QB because someone people are trying to convince me is a teammate and a leader ran away when his feewings were hurt.

He’s about as good as DG with a slightly different skill set. It’s not like DG has a great arm either. But the cool thing about DG is that he didn’t run away when he wasn’t apparently gifted what he felt he was entitled to in a starting job.

There’s no schism in the locker room beyond some kids still being friends with MM and others seeing him for his actions. Those two groups aren’t even mutually exclusive. So there’s not really any schism. MM eschewed team for himself. That’s just the kind of person he is. More power to him. Buh-bye.

20/20 hindsight says your prudent approach would have been completely wrong. You don’t put someone who doesn’t care about your team in a leadership role on your team.

        • Dude are you high on glue all the time? GA was never going to play him due to personal reasons. If you played college anything you would understand coaches do have favorites and vendettas against their players. So people transfer, happens to every team every year. You have an antiquated line of thinking in terms of your rah rah “he quit on us” mentality. You only get one shot and MM went where he would get a fair shake. Grow up old man

          • So why don’t you tell us what those personal reasons are, bright boy?

He left. He cared not one whit for his team.

If he was that weak in spirit, then by definition he is not a good teammate. And he sure as hell isn’t a leader. The choices he made were for himself only.

I’m not even saying that’s a bad thing. It could be good for both him and his actual team. But don’t try to sell me some bullshit line about justifying being a pouty runaway for this team.

It is what it is, and your relativism won’t change it. Deal with it.

        • Also saying DG and MM are equal talent wise is complete BULLSHIT, and you know it. Go check some stats and tell me which one if those QB’s are on the up, and which one has been on the down

          • They’re the same or thereabouts. I was saying this last year, and you all were agreeing with what I said. He throws a better ball with a slightly weaker arm. He did manage to finally run misdirection against Nikegon. It only took four games and a monumentally bad D. The latter is something DG hasn’t yet had… Cal being as close as you can get.

They’re different, but they had the same effectiveness against the same D this year.

          • LOL DG and MM are equal talent wise?? What in the holy hell?? Garretson is terrible. Mcmaryion is a serviceable Pac 12 QB. Mcm should have been named the starter for game 1 at the very least to keep momentum from 2016 and for the depth at QB it would have created behind him. Continuity is a good thing which GA has yet to discover in any regard on the football field at OSU. Just a Bonehead decision by GA. Plus Marcus had every right to leave after having been passed over for QB’s that weren’t as good as him 4 times in 2.5 years.

            Seth
            DG
            Blount
            Luton

          • You don’t understand, Cali. It’s been decided as fact that he was a chickenshit for not taking a 5th slap in the face and waiting for the two undeserving guys in front of him to get injured. It’s also been decided he can only sling it 50 yards with perfect spiral and accuracy, despite having the congenital handicap of a noodle instead of an arm.

          • That wasn’t a perfect spiral. It wasn’t a sling. It wasn’t perfect timing.

He opened up as wide as he could with that long, slow wind-up, and he threw it as far as he could. Someone who could sling that pass would have a strong arm. The pass wouldn’t go 30 yards in the air to go 50 yards downfield unless you needed to throw it over the defender. That’s not where it was placed. That throw over the defense takes either better timing or a stronger arm. MM has decent timing. But knock off the “he’s got a good arm” crap. Even Tedford doesn’t allow him to throw the passes a good arm would throw.

That brings up another point. Tedford does know how to use him. I do believe McGiven would have broken MM in the first game had he started. McGiven has it in his head that square pegs fit in round holes, unless it rains and gets too windy to be playing with pegs.

Anyway, what does a good teammate and a leader do even if facing the bullshit narrative that he’s the savior of all that is football and is better than anyone in the history of anyone? Does he stay and grind? Or does he pout, burn bridges and run away?

These are not antiquated ideals. In fact, staying and grinding has proven more often than the latter to make better QBs. Just ask Tom Brady how he felt about his time at Michigan and how that affected his draft day. Dude finally took what was his, and he plays with a chip on his shoulder to this day.

I have much respect for him graduating and having all the options he had after last year. But if you show up to camp, that says you thought about it, and your answer to fight or flight is to stay and fight. There is no way you do that knowing that going somewhere else is even an option. Occam says that it being an option is more than likely what caused him to not earn the starting spot.

There is no way any of our coaches are wrong after he did what he did when he did it. His actions make them right. He wasn’t committed to this team when he showed up for camp, and he showed it.

More power to him for doing what’s best for him, not his team. I might have cheered for him anywhere outside Eugene or Fresno.

If the narrative that his actions caused a schism on the team was true, then all the pejoratives I used to counterbalance your weird hyperbole would become true. That schism could only come because someone fed the team poison… and maybe continues to do so.

That would be a really juvenile thing to do on top of everything else.

          • Dood, I’m not the one rationalizing MM’s transfer. I’m the one pointing out that your rationalizations are irrational. If you want to say he was doing what’s best for him, fine. But don’t torture that reality to make it sound like he’s better than he is, he’s a good teammate or that he’s a leader.

      • If you’re talking about the extremely irrational fan resentment with libelous stories about team and coaches flying off the woodwork, no. The Riley rah rah sis boom bleaters are out in full force still. I got their down in front right here.

If you want to talk about the O and how it’s three years into this new system, then GA has to own that. The losses are weird and GA’s fault. The fan reactions are exponentially out of balance with the losses, unless some fans can’t compartmentalize the Riley years and are also blaming GA for those. I can see some people complain about having only one decent season in the last 8 years and just being frustrated overall.

        • If you’re talking about the extremely irrational Jack resentment with libelous stories about 3M flying off the woodwork, no.

        • Some of what you state is true. But you’re disingenuous and/or wrong about “weird” “exponentially out of balance;” the losses are waaaayyy off from what we’ve been sold: His guys, his system, etc:
          Average score differential Andersen years:
          2017 thus far: -25.2
          2016: -4.3
          2015: -18
Any phase of the game out of sync is absolutely his problem. Delegating is normal, but delegate to competent subordinates. Don’t we pay enough to attract decent assistants? Fans/press asking for answers and getting stonewalled about the offense, wtf? The “flip” I see is back to worse than he started.

          • That’s the weird part to me. I don’t understand the disconnect between looking at tape of our O scheme and saying we just need a couple tweaks here and there. If we would have played with the scheme run against UW from the start, I would buy it. But it’s weird that it isn’t obvious in a head that’s been stuck on football mode for four decades.

    • For the most part the recent rains took care of the wildfires. The Chetco Bar fire near Brookings was the largest at almost 200,000 acres. The locals aren’t very happy with the Forest Service as the fire started with a lightning strike on Wilderness ground and the Forest Service decided to just let it burn and it blew up on them. Then on one of the other fires the Forest Service went in and cut down some old growth for a fire break and caught hell for that. They’re between a rock and a hard place a lot of the time but the good news for them is that nobody gets fired no matter what they decide.

  24. Beav football has always been subpar. It’s pretty hilarious that we got rid of the guy who actually could give us a decent season every once in awhile. Until we decide we want to spend real money on the football program, we are always going to be average/below average unless we catch lightning in a bottle. In hindsight, we should kept Smiley, and started looking for a coach in waiting to hand it off to vs. this dumpster fire. This is going to be bad for at least 4 more years, but we shouldn’t expect any less. This is Beav football, and this is what we should expect.

  25. What about putting up a go fund me page to raise money to buy out Gary Andersen’s contract in hopes of getting a coach that can actually build a program.

Even if the website is a failure there is a chance that media picks up on it and runs with the story. That may be enough to provoke OSU leadership to publicly address the situation.

          • Mcgiven said this in the post practice interview, Said Hodgins is the 3rd guy and in a game they held the ball for 20 minutes they didn’t have time to rotate him in. He really wants everyone to believe that so he used fancy football words. ” We were in 21 personnel with only 2 receivers so we could be in more 2 back sets”

            https://oregonstate.rivals.com/news/vid-mcgiven-meets-with-the-media

What a complete clown show these dudes are running.

          • I don’t understand your point. I have issues with the scheme itself, albeit less with this game than the previous four. If we don’t go wide open pass set on the downs Hodgins would normally come in, and we don’t have enough plays to mix it up (not that I would trust our OC to do that), then the only question should be why Hodgins didn’t replace Villy when it was apparent Villy wasn’t having a good day.

But even that would be ancillary. It’s the scheme itself at the center of our problems. If you want to argue that SC should be moved to the slot/flanker on 11 sets, I agree. He’s much more dangerous in that situation than anyone else we have.

But then I was dumb enough to think we were going to see the slash position come to fruition. So much for that innovation.

    • Still doesn’t make sense. Bradford, Hernandez, Hawkins all got into the game at some point in reserve duty. You’d think at the very least, Hodgins would crack the rotation for a single rep in a game where nobody else was getting the job done. Our receiving corp had 2 catches all day(Villamin/Bradford), Matagi caught a shovel pass and our running backs caught 8 more passes, combined.

Hodgins is tied with Villamin for most receptions this year (in one less game played)
This excuse sounds like either bullshit or ineptitude.

      • Here’s an interview with GA from this morning. Listen to the interview, and immediately after GA gets off the call, Nigel Burton and Dan Shelton look at the DNP list and game film from the beginning of the game……and we have 3 WRs starting the game (Villy/Collins/Hernandez)

So……it’s pretty obvious the “we went to a 2 receiver personnel group” line is bullshit, when we see 3 receivers out there on film.

I dont know the exact minute the interview starts, but fast forward to about 90% of the way through the show.

        https://www.iheart.com/podcast/523-Rip-City-Mornings-28251808/episode/10-3-dan-and-nigel-28517555/?showId=28251808&episodeId=28517555&ref=tw&autoPlay=0&embed=true

        • Some reporter tweeted some cryptic message on Saturday or Sunday about SC moving outside, bumping Hodgins to the two. It sounds like we were going t run a lot of 12 and 21 personnel groupings, but that disappeared when Togiai was a game-time scratch.

So the contingency planning by our OC was faulty. Sure, Hernandez is a better blocker than SC. So putting him in the slot in lieu of a TE makes sense if that’s all you have. But it’s not all you have. Quinn Smith would be the next to step up. Hell, I’d give Delp an eligible number and stick him at TE for a contingency instead of losing 60 pounds against that D.

The question of why Villy didn’t sit after dropping passes is a fluid one. Some coaches have short leashes on their players. Others let them play themselves out of a funk. Villy was doing better this year, catching some difficult passes. Maybe Phillips should have noted that a different QB gave us a different Villy and sat him for that? I would agree with that idea. Phillips should have seen tape where Villy doesn’t do well with all our QBs not named Luton.

  26. A side note to Angry. Hey buddy. I don’t do any of those fancy computer money things. Way too complicated for a simple old coach. I would, however, like to buy you a cup of coffee or maybe several. If you are comfortable maybe supply some type of US Postal Service address, friend’s business etc? and I’ll mail you a Starbucks gift card.

As evidenced by the traffic, this site provides lot’s of fun and entertainment for the AB community. Thanks for taking this on.

  27. Nall and Irvine are listed as doubtful for USC and Crawford is out. I was going to pick the Beavs to win, but now I’m going with a 50 pt blowout for USC.

  28. The team may have so many defections after this season that Andersen will have to go prowling campus for walk-ons. Oh wait, he rarely leaves VFC so that probably wouldn’t even happen.

  29. There’s something about the Togiai situation that doesn’t add up. Why was he seen running routes and catching balls just prior to kickoff for the UW game on TV the other day? He was suited up. GA didn’t know why he wasn’t playing. Later it was said he injured himself in practice the previous week. The commentators seemed confused. I just don’t get it.

    • He was injured, and the warm-ups were when he evaluated his status.

If you watch the NFL, it’s not too hard to figure that one out.

  30. Most of it was Tyner is heathy now and he looked pretty good. “The guys are working their tails off”. What would a tailless beaver look like?

  31. Found this from 2014. This is Garreston at QB with Mcgiven at OC. The line play and pass pro is stellar so take that with a grain but look at the scheme and play calling against some pretty good comp.

    https://youtu.be/Wd5_GjXlTx8

    1. Hand offs from under center – with legit play action ( no hand offs shown but i’m guessing they ran the ball from under center too)
    2. Switch routes
    3. Multiple pick combination routes
    4. Motion across formation to diagnose coverage
    5. Designed QB waggles with routes pressing to the roll side!

This is plain out good offense here. So what this tells us is:

    1. Mcgiven had a stunt cock calling and designing plays for him
    2. He entirely forgot how to scheme and coach offensive football based on personnel?

Which one is it? DG and Mcgiven have 4 years experience with each other and a bye week last week and they looked about as good offensively as if a bunch of us schemed the game. Actually check that… if I schemed the game we would have completed more than 12 passes I guarantee it.

    • Well TJ Woods is Co-coordinator, so maybe it’s the two of them combined. Then there is Baldwin and Phillips probably getting their say in. Gary a real genius naming two coordinators….lol. Gary can’t get out of his own way with his decisions.

    • Matt Wells is the difference. He was OC in GAs best year and then moved to HC whike McD moved to OC. I would suspect Wells was still heavily involved in the offense

          • Wells was the Head Coach at USU in 2014? That would explain it then Mcgiven was maybe a glorified OC? But really only the QB coach? That would explain it because that offense was humming and looks nothing like the basic unimaginative shit we have seen pretty consistently for 3 years now.

          • Wells was OC when Baldwin jetted to CSU and McG was the QB coach I believe. Was also the year Utah State ended the season ranked in the teens (16?)
Then, when GA left, they both moved up a notch.

    • Finally!

      Was that so hard?

It explains all the wtf moments we’ve had about this offense and the things GA says. That’s what he’s selling. And it makes sense.

That’s where I don’t get the disconnect–between him seeing the tape of what we’re doing and that right there. Go back to their 2012 team. It was even better. Why can’t we run that O? I can understand implementing various elements of different offenses here and there. But eschewing all the basics seen in offenses like these then saying you’ve seen it work before?

  32. That footage was from 2014 when there staff was like this:

    HC: Wells
    OC: Mcgiven
    DC: Todd Orlando

So to your point Wells was probably super involved with the offense because that looks nothing like what we get with Mcgiven on his own here. Like how the hell do we not have a single package with a hand off from under center with a giant back like Nall?? Disgusting.

        • Whenever you talk about deadlifting, I always imagine your struggle with flaccidity by picturing the Amazing Mister Lifto.

          I really do pity you.

          • Don’t listen to Jack. He is a blowhard and weighs nearly as much as me (416lbs). He spends all of his time online and neglects his family. He drinks a lot too. He is a bigger (literally) loser than this football team. Ugh.

          • Heh heh…

The snowflakes have the sads because Jack makes them hurt and cry inside. :(

            Poor snowflakes.

Knowing what we’ve previously established your knowledge of 300 pounds and six inches to be, I think I’m more in the range of 20 feet tall and somewhere around 250 tons in weight.

          • Fucking money again…. Jack you are so funny!! I can’t believe people challenge you! I can barely type I’m laughing so hard. I am seriously going to reach out to some people I know at FX and see if I can develop a show for you. Comedy genius.

          • Aw shucks.
            Thanks.

I knew if I worked hard enough, it would pay off. I promise I won’t let you down. I’ll work twice as hard from now on.

Looking forward to working with you.

  33. From a guy on the “Things Overheard at OSU” Facebook group:

“One of my friends was hassled on her way back into the student section – she just left to go use the restroom. After she finally got in, I figured I would be proactive and ask the state trooper about what the policy is. He said there was no reentry to the student section. I asked about using the restroom, which I feel is a valid concern. He said “that’s life. Sucks dude.” What a professional response. We pay fees for student tickets. We shouldn’t be kicked out of our section to use the restroom.”

    Some comments to that poster:
“Against Boise State last year they did the same thing. We asked if we could go get water since it was like 90 degrees and they told us you can’t get back in if you leave. A family member in a different section went and got us water. The guy at the section tried to deny my family member handing us water over the rail.”

    Another one:
“At Civil War last year I was told if I left I was SOL. I have kidney disease and said “I have to pee right now so I’m going to go and I’m coming back in.” The guy was silent and when I came back it was a different guy, I explained my story and, with hesitation, he let me back in.”

It’s this kind of stuff that makes people not want to come to games. I get the staff – they want to prevent drunk kids, but come on.

    • I think legally, they need to provide access to free clean water. It’s not even a right amd wrong question.
Regarding the bathroom, I’ve never heard that students aren’t allowed to walk up to the breezeway to use the restroom. If that’s the case, I hope that girl takes a giant shit in the student section next time. Out program is run my idiots, so it wouldn’t surprise me if all of this is true

      • I think about it, and I don’t know that there are any laws regarding letting anyone back in. The one with a medical condition would be covered under the restroom access act. And OSU should be proactive in the name of safety on hot days by providing water to anyone who isn’t granted return access. But even if they’re abiding by the letter of the law, it’s a pretty shitty thing to do.

I would wonder what the law would say about them targeting only that section. Wouldn’t they need to enforce that rule equally? If they’re not doing it to us, why should they be allowed to do it to students? If they are allowed to do it, it must be in writing somewhere. If that’s the case, each student would have had to sign that equality away somewhere along the line.

I understand the drinking thing. But doing the wrong thing for the right reasons is still doing the wrong thing. The student council and OSU need to address this.

      • They need to be enforcing that at the stadium entrance/exit. It makes no sense to not allow someone back in a particular section if they never left the stadium. I feel like the security either isn’t being trained properly or they are misinterpreting their training, which would mean they aren’t being trained properly.

    • I’m a student here and for the past 3 years I have never once not been allowed back into the student section as a student. This is horseshit. Also, the state troopers don’t even have anything to do with entry into or out of the student section; they are only there to monitor for rowdy and illegal behavior.

        • I’ll be on the look out for one Chris Turek.

Also, his issue may have been with a section being full whether after him leaving or already full that might raise issues if the ticket checker doesn’t remember you. If a section is at capacity they typically don’t let people in to that specific section.

    • Stop posting to things overheard at OSU Mr Riley. And your kidney excuse didn’t work…the gum chewing always gave you away,we just thought it was so damn pathetic we let you back in for a bit.

  34. I’ve been thinking for awhile about the whole Heimlich situation and how there were rumors back then about the athletic department having some unhappy campers with how the whole situation was handled internally by Ed Ray, etc.
I wonder if that caused a huge rift between Barnes and Ed Ray? Barnes was fairly new on the job and got thrust into the situation without really much background to draw from, as far as his knowledge of any of the parties involved. I just wonder if our athletic department has never recovered by that whole event?
Something just doesnt seem right around the entire athletic deoartment. Ed Ray has been particularly silent since then (from my perception at least) and Barnes doesn’t seem to do a damn thing other than say “we’ve got the rigjt guy for the job”.

Does anybody here have an ear within the department that they’d be able to share some information about the level of morale around OSU?

    • A great question, Nicebeaver. I don’t follow Dr. Ray particularly closely, but it does seem he sort of came out of nowhere with his statements around the time GA was hired and then “disappeared into the shadows”.

      • Ray is pretty active with the athletic dept. The Heimlich story wasn’t anticipated by anyone. Too easy to second guess there in a fast and furious situation. Don’t think there is a rift. Most people upset that it put them in the wrong kind of spotlight.

Looking back, I think they handled it best they could. Don’t think they made the wrong decision. Sure it was chaos but the story hasn’t carried beyond the postseason and wasn’t a dominating story in the cws. When the story comes up next season they will be more prepared. Not sure if the media will pursue it much since all the facts are known.

Btw I still believe it was the wrong decision to allow him to enroll at OSU in the first place.

        • I think the part where Ed Ray told Heimlich he wouldn’t be allowed to finish the season with the team, but then had Heimlich tell the media that it was his own decision to remove himself from the team, was where Ray went a little off the rails. Sure, I understand they were in damage control mode, but at least beat genuine with you comments to the public and don’t force the kid to lie in order to cover up your orders.
As far as enrolling in the first place, it sure sounded like the school never knew about his history before he came here.

        • according to federal department of education guidance, when Heimlich got to the question on his application that asks–“have you ever been convicted of a felony”–he was advised to say NO, because he never was convicted of anything, let alone a felony. He was adjudicated as a juvenile offender, which under the Revised Code of Washington, put him on a path toward social rehabilitation, a process that includes counseling and otherwise abiding by the straight and narrow so as to put his life in order. The system worked until a relative, out of vengeance it would seem, tipped off Danny Moran. His reporting on the story was wrong on many levels and Canzano only supercharged Moran’s ignorance.

          • Is dolphin boy being sued for defamation over this? Or did Luke just let it go? It’s a pretty simple case for defamation. I’m wondering if they calculated the payout to be not worth the effort as loss of revenue doesn’t really apply since it was public record. The defamation was just how nasty dolphin boy made it sound by calling him a felon and having that DA irresponsibly confirm his defamation with some egotistic chest swelling about nothing tangible.

          • Or maybe loss of revenue can only be calculated after he actually gets drafted? Where was he mocked? I thought he was somewhere in the first or supplemental.

  35. I couldn’t make it through this whole thread, too depressing.. But I will say this program is a train wreck. If you can’t see that the train is wrecking, then you don’t know what to look for.. How anyone could defend GA is beyond my ability to comprehend. He has passed the point of return. He may potentially find another program at some point and have success, but his opportunity at OSU has passed.. It’s far too toxic for this current staff to salvage.. Program desperately needs a fresh start.

  36. McGiven and staff really talking up Tyner – “finally healthy” – over at OLive. Reads to me a bit like a distraction effort, as if he were the missing piece or his lack of health has limited the offense and its not the offensive coordination and/ior scheming at fault.

Says he great at “running the outside zone,” which is maybe what the want more of?

Also, Tyner says he has no regrets about joining Beavs, his first TD as a beav was “great,” and “…we have great team chemistry here.”

I’ll be happy for Tyner and team if Tyner has a big game Saturday, but is not like there’s been a deficiency in RB talent and depth….

    • Thinking that the offensive coaching staff is mounting some kind of distraction effort is probably giving them too much credit.

Maybe they’re just trying to focus on the positives because our starting QB and RB are both injured and the season has been a massive disaster so far. How many positives are there to focus on?

    • “we have great team chemistry here.”
Really? So many ways to spin this comment, I’ll posit a couple:
—Is TT reflecting upon his time down south and seeing a different chemistry at OSU?
—Is TT kissing up to a coaching staff which realizes folks see little evidence of great chemistry?
      —or?

      • Ooh!

        I’ll take the or:
Maybe he means they have great team chemistry.

I know, I know… that’s crazy talk. I have no idea why that popped into my head without justification. I just think weird stuff sometimes.

          • They haven’t given up. I would modify Bill’s statement to say we don’t have enough experienced talent to win games like UW or USC, the latter at full strength. We aren’t deep on the DL, and it’s clear they thought Evans would be there early.

Maybe we can get Nike to juice the Clearinghouse for Evans?

Our DBs are all so young… and now a little toasty. And our backers have been wasting their efforts trying to make up for the others.

Some DL beef instantly makes this team better. Some DL beef with these same players a year older will be very good.

O-line and TE are good and getting better, but we’re not exactly deep with good, experienced players. That will be different next year as well.

Oh… and when we get someone from the team on the record, he says they have it.

          • Well, there is a current player on the team reporting great chemistry.

In reality, he’s probably pumping some sunshine, and his opinion does not mean as much as a veteran member who has been there for multiple seasons.

The answer to the Beavers’ performance is probably pretty simple: their recruiting rankings are 11th or 12th in conference, and the coordinator coaches (at a minimum) suck. They beat the one team where they have better talent and better coaching. Unless they get lucky, probably won’t beat anymore.

          • Clarifying the snark: the players believe in the coaching style, and are doing as much as young men can to make the most of their coaching. Properly schemed this team has the talent to win 3 or 4 conference games each year. And Tyner is not the kind of personality to rock the boat.

  37. http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/374315-259237-hungalu-beavers-defense-remain-motivated-

Hungalu says he wants to make the most out of the rest of the season.

“This isn’t what we planned to start the season,” he says, “but this is a close team. We have a pretty good bond going right now. When I was here with Coach Riley, little individual groups of people were formed. With this team, everybody is bonded together and has strong friendships, which is a good thing. It’s going to help us get to where we want to be.”

    • Thanks for the link, a worthwhile read as usual from Eggers.

Hungalu also says, “”The guys on our defense, at least, are fired up. We see how close we are to being good. It’s motivational. “

That “at least” could be a bit concerning though. Still, we have Hungalu and Tyner (above) saying good things about teamwork and chemistry.

With Jacks point about the team not giving up and, now, two guys on record in such a positive way, I’m hopeful. That’s the Beav way, right?

Hopeful this team can play some complete games and that whoever the OC is will wise up to some degree. That hope for the OC would be a lot stronger if (very unlikely) McG was out of the picture.

EDIT/ADD: In another Eggers piece today, he talks of the Hodgins matter (fiasco?, mystery?, coaching decision?) last week and points out the underwhelming performance of Villy and Seth. Eggers concludes with this (obvious?) advice:
“Andersen would do well to keep a closer handle on what his offensive coaches are employing if they can’t do it better than they did against the Huskies.”

  38. Regarding above where I say Hodgin’s sad was going to post here. That’s what he told me, but that was 2 days ago. He registered an account, yet never showed up. Meanwhile, Sedge has an article about Hodgins with info from an inside source.

I can tell you the info shared throughout this thread came from Hodgin’s father. Why he suddenly won’t speak up, I have no idea.

Anyway, the stuff I wrote about Hodgins came from his father, so it can be trusted as fact, or at least that family’s perception of facts.
