Home Football Coaches Lying, Hodgins, etc

Coaches Lying, Hodgins, etc

243

If you haven’t listened to it, the Sprague/Machado podcast is pretty interesting. They field one of my questions (26:30 mark), but the more interesting part is their dour outlook. When optimistic homers like those two are in the doldrums you know it’s bad.

Some other notes:

— Gary Andersen needs to be on Twitter for recruiting purposes. He’s not in the modern age.

— McGiven lied in his response about Hodgins. This is well documented now. Why lie when it’s something fans/reporters can easily go fact check? Lying to the fans is concerning. Gary saying he doesn’t know why a 4-star recruit isn’t playing is, in essence, a cover for their incompetence, and it’s worse than admitting error.

— Hodgin’s dad confirmed Isaiah was 100% healthy, had one of his best weeks of practice, zero discipline issues. Said Andersen is losing control of coaches and team.

— Speaking of Hodgins, does his brother now de-commit because of how the coaches handled Isiah? If so, we lose a much needed DT. Important to keep the commit and keep Isiah from transferring, yet these coaches are jerking around.

— Would be interesting if CO and WSU fans chimed in to tell us if this is normal for a rebuild. I remember wanting Leach at OSU; when he was struggling people chided me about it and said his personality wasn’t a good fit. Maybe, but he’s a good coach. GA’s obsession with Leach’s offense has ruined his (GA’s) career.

— Why does GA run off QBs? Not just the ones of this roster, but remember in recruiting when they got weird with Davy Moore and the Utah kid (Greek name that I can’t remember right now, but he set every State record). Beavs have now had 6 starting QBs under GA. It’s equally weird on the recruiting trail. What’s his beef with QBs?

— Petras is the only QB hope for this program. Don’t see a winning D1 QB on the current roster.

— When things are at their lowest, the only way is up, and it’s usually not as bad as it seems. Beavs in an upset this weekend??!

  1. I think you left out some interesting parts of the podcast.

Angie says she thinks GA has some of the Riley-esque over-loyalty to his friends. Could be foreshadowing that we won’t see any big changes in the staff.

Also she thinks he’s been too impatient with the offense, e.g. becoming enamored with the air raid after the WSU game and bringing in an air raid guy to help the offense and going and getting Luton who is a big arm but doesn’t fit what GA said he wanted (arm/mind/legs).

In the interview Eggers seems to think that GA isn’t involved in the offense at all, but Angie said she knew for a fact that that is wrong.

Eggers did say he thinks Luton was better than MM though. :P

    • Well I was combining my thoughts with theirs from the podcast, not exactly going through the podcast and noting everything worth discussing. People should listen to it and pose their own questions, thoughts, etc. What you brought up is interesting, agreed.

And Eggers is a bit nuts with QBs, too. He never liked McM. To believe Luton is better is absurd at this point. If you want to believe in time that could possibly, in a best-case scenario be true, cool, but based on performance, production, wins, etc it’s completely unsupported by fact and thus insane/wishful thinking/butt hurt.

      • Eggers with the Luton > MM comment was weird. He just stated that but didn’t back it up with any kind of stats or facts (which obviously he can’t because the stats don’t support the claim).

Seth Collins is probably better than Luton tbh.

          • It’s pretty clear SC throws panic balls as a QB. The best QB we’ve had in years was the second half of the 2015 CW. Having game manager QB1 in there with star hurdler QB2 was just fun to watch.

Follow that yellow brick road. That was some innovative ball.

I know I’ve written about it, but a healthy dose of QB2 also saves QB1s from getting broken.

    • Oh.

      My.

      Fuck.

      Ing god.

NOBODY ON THIS STAFF HAS EVER COACHED IN A FUCKING AIR RAID OFFENSE.

      THERE IS NO AIR RAID.

      THERE IS NO AIR RAID.

      THERE IS NO AIR RAID.

YOU ALL SOUND LIKE FUCKING RETARDS.

    • We should all congratulate Mike leach.

After going 5-0 to start his sixth season at Wazzu, he is now a .500 coach.

      *yay*

I believe Leach is a turd when it comes to player safety. His locker rooms at TTech and his first year at Wazzu openly ragged on him to the press. You want to talk about your best receiver being upset about something? Look at what Leach did to his players.

I believe I also said in some other post somehwere around that time that he would end up being the Mike Riley of the Palouse… being mediocre overall… maybe breaking the less-than-four-losses, maybe not… finally getting figured out by his contemporaries.

Now I suppose I should also add that he’ll likely skip town after Falk leaves. It only gets harder for him in this league starting next year, and disloyalty pays big bucks for head coaches.

He’s still a large penis for the way he handles player health. He’s going to get some dumb school sued sometime soon.

Meanwhile, I will enjoy watching them finish not in first place again this year. It couldn’t happen to a dirtier crew.

      • Hey Mike leach… is Peyton Pelluer really 100% healthy?

Shouldn’t a head coach know that shit?

It must be because you suck and there’s poor morale in your locker room… yeah… that’s the ticket.

        • Or maybe he lied about it like he lies about players all the time.

This is well documented now. Why lie when it’s something fans/reporters can easily go fact check? Lying to the fans is concerning. Leach saying his obviously injured player is 100% healthy is incompetence, and it’s worse than admitting error.

But he does it all the fucking time, and you ignore that which is much worse because the grass is supposedly greener.

          • Uhm….No its not, college football does not require injury reports. Its perfectly valid to claim everyone is 100%. Strategically I would too.

          • I don’t care if there’s no injury report. A lie is a lie is a lie.

If you want to talk abut how these lies have evolved over the years in terms of how Leach uses them, then you would be as concerned about his disregard for player safety/health as anyone he’s left in his wake with his shitty methods.

He has a proven history of pressuring medical personnel and players to improperly hasten rehab schedules in order to send them back to play in traffic. His most famous two were concerning head trauma. One of those cost him his previous coaching gig.

To be fair, I though Adam James was an entitled brat, and what Leach did to try to embarrass him was a big nothing burger. But there was a claim that he was hurried back from an actual concussion. Leach denied it. Sure, he’s a dick. But so what?

Then he did worse to Falk.

Now I don’t know that Leach hasn’t been lying all along with his lawsuit against TTech. Oh yeah, dude has a victim mentality to go with his ego. But I digress. His propensity to lie about players’ health and other smaller things which seem to be insignificant makes me wonder if he just does it all the time, non-stop.

He has all the signs of being a master manipulator. Being one doesn’t keep one from being a good coach in terms of Xs and Os. He’s decent coach in terms of the Os.

          • So lying about injuries is a problem now? It’s not just an issue of entitled fans wanting to know something that’s none of their business?

For the record, I do think Leach’s lying is more severe than Andersen’s, as the former’s is reflective of a level of disregard for player safety that (AFAIK) isn’t present with Andersen. Andersen’s lies are more just reflective of his ego and overall inability to communicate, but they’re lies nonetheless.

      • GA cares about player safety?

He’d run Nall in blowouts when Nall was hurt, had Nall well over his optimum weight (to the point Nall complained about pain) as he figured out whether he should be a RB or LB, had Seth throwing hospital balls, Luton (who has no business being in the P-12) now with a broken spine…etc etc.

No coach cares about player safety. They care about winning games while looking like they care about safety. Leach just ignores the fake caring, and I admire that honesty. Is it shitty coaches don’t care? Yeah. It’s worse when they pretend they do.

        • GA doesn’t make them do those things when they should still be rehabbing from previously doing those things.

You admire constant lies and call them honesty, yet you rail against lies as disconcerting.

You present a false dichotomy regarding QBs, and that’s if you’re not called out on one of the variables not even existing on our team. So you have to present an ad iram in order to even create that variable. And your bias for Leach is ridiculous. I don’t even care if you love GA and thought he was great. Leach is a manipulative turd.

However, manipulation can be helpful when all anyone cares about is wins.

          Right?

You’re missing the forest for the trees. You’ve spent all this time whining about unicorns while ignoring the reality on the ground. Listen to the words that are said instead of dismissing htem out of hand. GA isn’t some mumbly Riley type who thinks things would have been nicer if things weren’t things. He actually says shit i you listen to him. He defers to medical personnel (Storm at Michigan). He makes mistakes. The only real dysfunction is that he sells what he had going at USU, but the product on the field is completely different from what he sells.

If he is too buddy buddy with any one coach, and that makes him too stubborn to act decisively about what I would think should be a personal affront to him, then let’s discuss that. Let’s start talking about the coach’s this-ain’t-that schism instead of wasting our time with these really extreme insecurities that I thought we were over but apparently are not.

      • In four season at Utah State, Gary Andersen went 26-24. That’s basically .500 ball.

In the middle of his third season at Oregon State, he’s 7-22. If he wins every game from here on, he can be a .500 coach some time in the middle of next season.

He left Wisconsin before he could destroy their already successful program, so there’s that.

I don’t want Leach, but a .500 coach would be an improvement over what we have now.

  2. Angry, things get lost in these 400+ comment threads that you reference in new ones. What did Hodgins dad say? I saw in the last thread you said he never showed up and posted… didn’t see where you said what he told you either.

    • He said he was going to show up and post something two days ago, yet he never did (he only registered). Everything he told AB was via Twitter.

  3. Ed Ray should resign. He is the head of the snake. If he would have stuck to what he knows, which is almost nothing, we wouldn’t be in this spot. Would love to believe Andersen will right the ship in year 4, but just don’t see it happening. I know we really can’t get rid of him until year 5, but that will cost us millions in concessions and ticket revenue with the current product on the field. Are we even averaging 20,000 a game? Something needs to be done and accountability starts at the top.

    • Not really. People just don’t understand symbolism.
McM is a symbol of GA’s QB incompetence. I bring him up repeatedly for that reason, not because I think he’s great. As I said a hundred times, he’s not great, but he was the best option for this team. If that is obvious to a Joe Blow like me, it should be obvious to our head coach. “Letting it go” is letting GA off the hook for an awful error that has cost fans a season. So no, I won’t.

In terms of skills, he’s balanced in that he can throw and run and has high IQ. His flaws are he lacks natural instincts, which might be too much over-thinking. Cerebral people tend to be this way.

      • If he was the best option for this team, why didn’t he stay and prove it? It would seem the best option for this team would be one that is actually on the team.

Or are we going to stick to the mantra that someone with a healthy, competitive nature naturally runs home to mommy when the big bad coach obviously plays favorites?

          • I can give you all the irrational emotion of an adolescent who wakes up to a zit on their face and whines about how unfair life is, sure. You have repeated it ad nauseum.

What you have not done is demonstrate why being a committed part of a team then breaking that commitment is supposed to garner any pathos from the fans of said team.

          • Did you just use pathos in a sentence?

Anyway, I really don’t care if you have pathos. McM was the best QB, GA didn’t play him, he left to go play. That’s normal. If you need to spin your hamster wheel to rationalize/hate on him for it, that’s a you problem.

It’s extremely simple human behavior that you can’t seem to grasp. And worse you’re using it as some platform for self-righteousness with this “he betrayed the team” crap. Give me a break. All players are in it for themselves first, team second. To think altruism exists makes you that naive whining kid with the zit.

          • Your whole fallacy is a poor me rant for someone who isn’t even on our team.

Did I use pathos in a sentence?

He can go wherever he wants. More power to him for having that option. Stop trying to tell me he was anything that would have been a positive for this team. His precise actions say he was not committed to this team. Compared to someone who is not committed to this team, a better option at any position is a true frosh walk-on.

You know as well as I do that anyone who always has an out is not going to give you his or her all. Would MM have been our best QB option had he stayed? We’ll never know. He stole that argument from you when he fled whatever horror you want him to have endured. Trying to prove that negative is ridiculous and denotes insecurity.

          • Poor me rant? As explained already, McM is just a symbol of GA’s QB incompetence.

The rest of your argument is literally insane.

But, I know you need the last word, so you win.

          • You’re the one who has been on here daily saying MM feels slighted by something that is a daily event in every sport. I find it funny when I put your premises less delicately, but you all think I’m the one hating on him.

          • I like to think that he likes the public health program at Fresno that much better than what OSU offers for his future, and he only found out he was accepted after he already started fall camp.

You know… a decision a mature person would make.

          • Sure. This one puts him in a good light. I like to think of MM in a good light. You would have me think otherwise, and I don’t like that. I think he deserves better.

        • That is the normal move for when someone you’re putting in work for does not appreciate or reward your achievements.

Take it out of college sports and put the same scenario into a professional workplace. If your work doesn’t give you a raise when you do a great job what do you do? You have two choices. A. You leave and find a workplace that properly compensates you. B. You take it on the chin and suffer and continually get undervalued by a company who doesn’t appreciate you.

Obviously decision A is not cowardly or “running home to mommy” or “escaping your problems.” It’s the smart and correct decision if your work is being unfairly undervalued so you attacking his character for that totally rational decision is kind of gross tbh.

          • I didn’t say he was irrational. He can do what he wants to do. I’m just giving color to the pathos you all want or him.

You all are trying to convince me that the best person for promotion at the company Person A left for whatever reason… is person A.

I wish one of you weren’t so buried in made up shit that you would say sometimes people don’t fit at certain places/jobs/whatevers. He tried his best to fit, but he was gone once he got his degree. Thanks for the memories.

But no. It has to be some babbling psychodrama involving some of the dumbest entitlement arguments I’ve ever seen.

          • If I had to make a ruling between Angry and Jack, I would need sone pmore pieces of evidence. For example, did MM transfer to Fresno knowing that he had the starting QB position locked up, or did he know that he would have to compete to displace the incumbent starter? Also, did GA specifically tell MM that he would never start for the Beavers, or did he tell him he wasn’t the starter but he could compete for the job? I don’t know the answers to these questions. If MM was told he would never start for OSU, then it would make sense for him to go where he had a chance. But if he was told he would have to compete for the job at either school, then what would make him choose one over the other? One could postulate that he chose the one where he had the best chance. Maybe he based his decision on his competition. Or maybe he decided GA and his staff are so bad at evaluating QBs that even if he was better than his competition, it wouldn’t be recognized and he could not win the job.

          • Jack did you ever play sports? Imagine if you were better than someone and you knew it. Stats proved it/ In the game you proved it. Your teammates knew it but despite that 4 different times your coach picked a player that wasn’t good as you to start over you. That is what happened to Marcus Mcmaryion here. GA and crew chose:

            1. Seth Collins
            2. Darrell Garreston
            3. Conor Blount
            4. Jake Luton

All ahead of Marcus. Despite him being better than all of them. Could he have stayed to wait for an injury to give him another chance to play? Absolutely. But that is like waiting for a girl who fucks 4 of your friends to come back and want to be with you and you then saying yes sure thing baby girl. There is no respect or dignity in that.

          • Dooz, none of that matters to me. Jack can be right in his mind and yours, so good luck with all that.

McM is nothing more than a symbol of GA’s QB incompetence. When I write McM, I might as well write, “GA picked the wrong QB and thought the best QB on the roster was the worst.” McM is shorthand for all that. Why he left doesn’t necessarily matter. All that matters is GA is our HC, and GA thought Marcus was the 3rd best QB on the roster.

And this in addition to his reputation coming in that he was bad with the QBs at Wisconsin. If you need to know more, then look for more, but that’s all I need to know in order to draw a conclusion, which is this: GA has no clue what he’s doing with QBs.

That being said, I do like Petras, but getting him to OSU will involve (a) Petras not realizing GA is a QB goon and de-committing (b) Petras being recognized as the best QB (c) Petras being coach up by McGoonin’ and ultimately living up to his ability.

The odds of all that happening are meh.

          • I had the stats, and I could beat everyone on the team one on one. I didn’t cry about it. I derived joy from going into a blowout, only to make it not one, only to get yanked for those who would lose in a blowout.

That coach wasn’t my coach the next year.

          • And you’re conflating the MM of now with the MM of then. He is a vastly superior QB in terms of confidence, let alone skill, compared to that MM.

          • Calibeav, thank you…that’s exactly what I mean. McM does not need to “white knight” for the Beavs in any way nor should he be scolded for not doing so. I was disappointed when he left but thought he absolutely did the right thing.

“McM is nothing more than a symbol of GA’s QB incompetence.”

Yeah I’ve never gotten the impression that the reason you hammer on this was anything other than a criticism of GA and his decisions. McM is just a figure head to all this.

          • For the 101st time, it’s not about McM.

Doesn’t matter how good he is other than he’s better than the guys who started over him, which I think like 90-95% of people recognize at this point.

Once that’s accepted as fact, the HC not seeing it becomes a real problem, especially when he has a track record of doing it.

And for the record: you’re coming from a bias that he’s worse than he is.

          • Here’s a fun stat:

Best records for QBs who have started in the last three seasons up to now, in reverse alphabetical order so as to not bunch any panties:
            MM: 2-5
            JL: 1-3
            DG: 2-5
            SC: 2-5

DG was 2-4 coming into the season. It appears MM was not better than any of them. But being better is easy enough to fake in absentia, given that it’s a subjective idea.

Someone mentioned reading Fooled by Randomness the other day. Arguments like this and the one biased toward Leach makes me think a lot of people should probably read that book.

If the O was plug and play, this would still be a ridiculous argument. But we’d be winning.

          • Flawed in so many ways not even sure it’s worth pointing out. But the most obvious being the leap in logic that there’s nothing more at play in a W than QB performance.

          • Oh sure.

But your leap in logic is just fine since all that which is unknown you must intuit correctly to perfectly fit your singular and malignant conclusion, despite it relying on the premise that someone not committed to a team is a “better” player to take any role on that team.

Never mind that you incorrectly think your conclusion and all that I have written which you say is hating on MM are two different conclusions.

Never mind that introducing one of many possibilities makes you all defend that false dichotomy that much more.

          • Wait… you are trying to say that making comparisons between QBs by comparing winning records is like blaming skill for chance?

So you never even read my post… or any other one pointing out what values were attributed to any of those wins or losses?

          • As angry pointed out, to really feel confident in Jack’s argument you have to ignore history.

            To summarize, at Wisconsin GA:

-Started McEvoy over Stave despite Stave outplaying McEvoy in camp, overruling his own offensive coaches in the process.

-Was so much of a coward that rather than inform Stave of his decision to his face, sent his OC (who, again, disagreed with the decision) to deliver the news.

-Blew up team chemistry in no small part because Stave was one of the most respected members of a team and was benched in favor of a player who not only wasn’t as good, but was not considered as hard of a worker.

-Invented phantom injuries to deflect from the fallout. These were almost immediately exposed as blatant lies.

-Had to be essentially bailed out of his own problems by his AD, who managed to hold the team together and prevent things from getting REALLY ugly.

In Bayesian terms, we have a strong prior that GA (a) is a poor evaluator of QB play (b) meddles in the QB decision making regardless, and (c) is careless about the effects of his personnel moves on team chemistry. And you’re surprised people don’t trust GA’s decisions re: 3M?

          • So you’re calling Stave a liar?

Because in order to make up all that shit, you have to dismiss Stave saying that he feels okay, but something just isn’t right, which makes him not able to throw the ball correctly, which made him obviously not the best in camp that fall.

You should really do a little google typing before composing your false narratives. At the very least, add a couple links to some blog that you created on the fly so you can pretend what you made up is true.

          • And if you’re going to link the yips article, you’d be wrong. He had the yips before that, and he said so during the time. The yips article is revisionist on his part.

          • I will say this, since I went back and looked at all those articles and tweets and whatevers back at the time.

I think GAA does have a problem communicating with his personnel. I did get the sense that the discussion with Stave should have been had involving his issue. That’s a hard one to call, But I would have gotten Stave help with him understanding what was wrong. Once that happened, he recovered in less than two months. I think the incorrect communication exacerbated his issue and might have led to a longer recovery.

The LDR quote about never playing was obviously hyperbole. No coach says that. But that he even got that sense is on GA. You’re going to be buried on the depth chart here because you aren’t mobile and you can’t complete a 90% pass 50% of the time can sound like what LDR heard if he’s not accustomed to straight talk. Coaches don’t need to apologize for being straight. But they do need to learn to gauge the mentality of the kids in front of them when choosing their words.

Obviously, some of them are not yet mature enough to run the numbers and not take it personally.

        • Trashing a kid whose only “crime” was to transfer away from your favorite team and then, when called out on it, pulling the “I was just making a rhetorical point, bro” card is lame.

You said it, own it. And while you’re at it, come up with something more creative than “ran home to mommy” or “wanted to be handed the starting position” that every jackass fan uses when someone transfers from their favorite team.

          • I’m not making a rhetorical point, person who’s afraid to use his real name when making up lies about Stave.

I’m only saying less delicately what angry and the herd are saying. If MM was truly butthurt and ran away, then he was just butthurt and ran away. No justification changes that. Justifications only justify what is.

I repeated it. I own that.

You all said that which I then repeated in different words to show that what you all said was actually a mean thing to say about someone.

            Own it!

  4. Greek kid’s name was Kafentzis. If I recall correctly he committed to GA at Wisconsin and foolishly decided to stay there after GA left. Had he followed him to OSU this story might look very different.

  5. “— When things are at their lowest, the only way is up, and it’s usually not as bad as it seems. Beavs in an upset this weekend??”

Oh fuck. Thanks for the hearty laugh. I needed that.

Let’s see, a pissed off USC team that has hordes of 5 star talent. OSU hasn’t won there since I’ve been alive and I am on the downhill side of life.

Yep. I totally see an upset here.

  6. Hearing that we may not have any of the official visitors who were scheduled to come for the Colorado game, because the game is happening too early in the day. (1:00)

Still havent confirmed, but Nikko Hall and Andrew Mata’afa were the current officials and Isaiah Smalls was going to be unofficial.

      • I think they typically play football in their hometown on friday nights and either fly up really late that night or early on Saturday. Could be these guys were scheduled to come in Saturday? Like I said, still waiting for confirmation that none of them are coming. I’m sure Smalls isn’t, but he already had his official visit anyway.

    • I heard that.

Should have been obvious game 1 when the O was responsible for 27 of CSU’s 50+ points via field position, turnovers, etc.

What would make me happier is if guys like Eggers and others in the media saw obvious problems sooner. That would be much better than admitting the obvious 5 or 6 weeks into the season.

      • Your overall point is fair – the offense put them in bad spots – but blame for 27 points is disingenuous.

There was a pick-6, and two very short fields generated from turnovers. Thus the offense was responsible for 13 CSU points. You can’t reasonably expect to stop a field goal if they start in FG range, but you can certainly save the TD.

One of the short fields, we had a nice stop and held them to a field goal. The other one, we didn’t. That’s 3 points on the O for sure, but the D deserves blame for the other 4. I guess you’re also counting the TO that gave them the ball at their 45, and sorry, but a 55 yd TD drive is on the D.

Obviously the three phases of the game are interrelated, and obviously the D would have performed better with better field position. But absolving the D for a drive that started in their own territory is reaching.

If you look at first half ToP for the first 4 games, Minnesota is the only one that follows your narrative (D is always on the field and wears down). ToP was equal vs CSU and PSU, and we actually dominated ToP vs WSU. Minnesota and then of course Washington were the games where we truly couldn’t get our D off the field.

I maintain that at the start of the season, our defense and offense were pretty close to equally bad. You could blame fatigue vs MINN, then we saw clear improvement vs WSU, and then more improvement vs WASH. Now our D looks like a legitimate unit. Didn’t start out that way.

Don’t know about anyone else but I haven’t been pointing to points scored as the reason our D is bad. I’m saying it because I watched the games and saw really bad defense:

        – Little to no pressure on the QB (0 sacks through 3 games)
        – Missed/whiffed tackles and flailing
        – Blown coverages & wide open opposing receivers

This is the stuff that started awful and has gotten better. That’s what tells the story. I don’t care about the scoreboard, as you mention that can be deceiving.

        • Oh and D-linemen getting consistently blown off the ball from the very start! That was the most discouraging, especially vs lowly Portland St

        • I fully agree, it is revisionist history to say the offense is all of the problems for this year. I think it would be hard to argue that Luton going down has not hurt the already incompetent execution from the offense. To say that last week’s game is evidence the offense is the problem for this team, disregards what my eyes have seen the rest of the season. To say the offense has been A major problem this year, I would absolutely agree.

    • It was not the offense that was being gashed for yards on the ground. I still maintain that defense was bad those first couple of games. They have gotten better as the season, while the offense has gotten one dimensional and worse as Luton went down.

  7. Personally I think Willard could be sneaky good. His film was impressive and that’s a decent league he plays in. Allegedly he has been shining on the Scout team. I would love to get a look at him later this season. With Petras 100% committed there’s no need or advantage in keeping them on the same track..

    • I’m with you. There’s not much point in playing Garretson exclusively the rest of the way. Might as well get some guys experience. Luton said in an Egger’s piece he’s still not totally sure if he’ll come back to football. Time to start preparing for next year, when Garretaon will be gone.

    • Might as well give him a look.

His film is good, but his completion % atrocious. Always a huge red flag.
On film he looks like Jake Locker, light edition. Quirky thrower, good runner…just not nearly as good as Jake at any of it.

I guess it will depend how they use him and what they ask him to do. I don’t have faith they’ll design plays around his skill set.

      • On video, the offensive line is terrible and the team’s record was pretty bad, so those factors are probably coloring his HS completion %. It looks like they changed the offense to throw the ball more his senior year and his completion % went up dramatically until he got injured.

Senior year: 55%, 3 TD 1 INT (25 carries, 42 pass attempts in 2 games)
Junior year: 44%, 6 TD (114 carries, 91 pass attempts)

Even if his senior year wasn’t a veer offense like junior year (just my speculation), he only has 2 games of non-veer game action. The guy needs some practice time to learn the ropes.

He’s also not the biggest guy out there. Do we want him getting injured and ruining his career in this disaster of a season? The way our luck is going, that’s probably what would happen.

        • How do they look trash? They’re catching his passes, not dropping beautiful balls.

Anyway, put him in the game. Let’s see what he can do. At the very least, it expedites the process and we’ll know one way or the other about him headed into next year.

GA won’t do it, of course, but he should.

          • No because GA obviously wants to win games and DG still represents our best chance at that.

If Willard sees any game time this year, it should be garbage time.

          • Not this past game. I know both Rutgers and CU kept it close at the half then also got worked over like we did. But we didn’t see their reserves until the late fourth quarter. Compare that to Fresno, where they had D reserves playing in the second quarter and yanked their O after the first play of the second half.

  8. I was bored, so I watched some of the 2014 Beav/ASU game just to reminisce about a competitive game and the last time the Beavs beat a ranked team. I was surprised by the athleticism of that team even though they finished 5-7. Despite Riley’s numerous shortcomings, they looked like they belonged in the P-12. 2 out of 3 of Anderson’s teams really have not been competitive and that’s depressing. You knew what was going to happen in the 2nd half against the Huskies and it’s most likely the same thing that’s going to happen this Saturday. My fear is that the Beavs are now the P-12 version of Kansas or the Big 10 version of Rutgers. I have no idea how or if it can be fixed.

  9. Players make plays. Players win games… when the coaches get out of the way of the players and call a game they can play.

That was the only good full game for that team. And a bunch of the upperclassmen were good enough to get looks or jobs with the NFL. That was the problem. We could see how talented our consistently poorly ranked recruited players were, but certain coaches and their enablers continued to mutter garbage excuses about more with less and airports while their perceived less got embarrassed by equals or less.

      • I take that back.

        Blount hasn’t started.

So much for MM making that, “Fool me four times, shame on you,” argument going around.

        • Blount went in ahead of McM when Garreston first got hurt last year if you remember. It wasn’t until Blount also got hurt that Marcus got the chance to start.

          • Blount never got the chance to start. So saying his injury is why makes the argument that MM was fooled a fourth time, therefore he deserved to be butthurt, is ridiculous. IIRC at the time, we were gimpy on the O-line, and Blount provided a skill set MM was afraid to use, running the keeper.

I mean, I get it. MM is a pocket passer. What’s this running shit? QBs get hurt when they run. See: DG and Blount.

His extreme trepidation toward that side of the game is what sat him. If any of you think it’s not right to play players who do have confidence in front of a player like that, you would be wrong.

I will 100% agree if anyone wants to say that’s not the scheme we should be running. But none of you want that right now. That would be too easy.

  10. WHat if the team is actually hanging together in spite of what we have surmised regarding McM, but the coaching is so abysmal that it is actuall the hindrance. If the team has good chemistry, as Hungalu and Tyner have said, do the coaches among the staff ahve good chemistry and consistent vision/buy in as a coaching staff? GA has had so much turnover for only his 3rd year. It begs the questions:
    1) Which coaches have been promoted beyond their capabilities, when will they be demoted or let go?
    2) Does GA look wide enough to fill those vacant coaching roles, or is he willing to hire coaches who won’t be yes men, and might be better coaches than he is?
    3) Are coaches leaving as soon as they get an opportunity, might some coaches be looking for other opportunities as a way out of this situation?
    4) Is there too much Utah in the staff for outsiders to thrive within the coaching group?
    5) Is there a favoritism among the staff and the wrong people have GA’s ear?
    6) Is this staff capable of recruiting as it was touted the first year after losing Sitake, Tuiaki, Brennan etc,?
    7) How much of this affects the players belief in the gameplan if any of these points are happening?
    8) To what extent should GA be held negligent to not be involved with major decisions from both sides of the ball, including: recruiting, starting, benching, discipline, game-planning, schemes, strategy?
    9) At what point do the players no longer trust the process if they aren’t seeing any results, and is the process really proven to work in a Power 5 conference?
    10) How can GA gain any momentum and turn it into a recruiting plus when he will have less than 10 wins after 3 full seasons? Losing culture does not sell to major recruits.

  11. It will be in the 90’s Saturday in L.A. that means defense will be worn out by mid second quarter. Santa Ana’s too so Garretson’s eyes will be watering from allergies making his throws either worse or better.

  12. OT: per Twitter Warren Washington committed. Solid offer sheet. Wonder if that’s why the Kelly kid appears to have decommitted. Does this mean we don’t have a shot with Hapa? ?

  13. My big concern is how inflexible Gary Andersen seems. He claims that he is using the formula that made him successful at Utah State and Wisconsin. Did he try every offensive scheme and use 5 different Quarterbacks in his first 3 years at Utah State or Wisconsin? He continually says that he tries to put the kids in the best place for them to be successful. Has he evaluated whether he is putting them in the right spot? I was at the UDub game and not one Corner-Back turned to play the ball. Andersen blew this off saying that “it isn’t a factor in calling pass interference”. With that aside, what about just the chance to disrupt the play or God forbid get an interception. Open field tackles where a joke. Now, Jake Browning is a great Quarterback and runs well but he’s not a 4 or 5 star Running-back. How can 5 of our “highly trained and skilled” linebackers miss open field tackles on a QB? – ON ONE PLAY! These are systemic problems, not just a few missed tackles” This goes back to fundamentals and coaching. The one good pass that Garretson made hit his receiver in the chest and the guy didn’t even have his hands out to receive the ball. Thank GOD we have a great punter. He gets a lot of practice. We don’t even get into field goal range.

    • The items you have listed are what makes most fans want to scream: What were they teaching during spring and fall camp? To suggest that a cb not playing the ball isn’t a factor is almost malfeasance imo. Even I know they are supposed to play the ball. I often listen to the opposing team’s game radio announcers (can’t listen to Mike Parker) because I haven’t the time or patience to sit and watch – especially this team – and the announcers almost always point out OSU”s lack of fundamentals. Also done with GA’s no-content babbling and only resigned to being stuck with him unless he has the grace to resign.

  14. GA is a huge disappointment so far.

In other news the Pac-12 inked a deal with Alibaba though the 2023-2024 season when our Tier 1 deal with ESPN and Fox expires. Good move as Alibaba and some of the Chinese internet players are doing well. There are 27K Chinese students at Pac-12 universities and only 29K total stidents at Wazzu in comparison. That number will likely continue to nudge higher. AT&T partnership is through 2018 so after next year wither AT&T likely inks with DirecTv until 2024 like Alibaba or we may lose AT&T as a partner. Hopefully with the ex DirecTv exec now at the Pac-12 he can keep AT&T and get them to carry on DirecTv. Is best opportunity for Pac-12 to be positioned with modest sttength for negotiations likely to begin in early 2023 for our next Tier 1 deal.

  15. GA doesn’t have the resources he had at wisky, and he doesnt have the luxury of a MWC schedule.

The reality is OSU is not a desirable place for kids who have options…..GA has tried to win big boy recruiting fights or whatever he calls them, but he’s failing.

We’re getting blown out. We’ve got a coach that is losing control of the program…….this is gonna get worse.

    • Yeah… that crap is not going to fly.

Any coach who wants to start in on that namby pamby weak sauce of an excuse can walk out the door and keep walking.

    • Anyone that complains about resources is either a duck homer, or is clueless about the actual amount of resources available. GA is losing the recruit battle because he keeps getting BLOWN OUT by opponents, not because of his location…

  16. Bullshit…..we are a historically lower tier pac team. We do not have the resources of Big 10 powerhouse such as Wisconsin, nor the pedigree to attract recruits.

You missed my point completely……we are a school who is behind the eight to start off…..we cant afford to look like we have…..we have to scratch and claw for everything we get unlike usc, UW and the like.

    • If you hadn’t noticed, the generations that are growing up with computers in their hands sort of don’t really care about your traditions. Those traditions seem to be what got us in what is now a shitty world, and the scheiss-meisters are blaming the children for it all.

      So yeah… tradition.

    • It doesn’t take 5* talent to learn how to block properly, or to run routes properly, or to take good angles and tackle properly. All of that stuff can be taught to 3* guys. OSU’s location, facilities, or lack of airport doesn’t have anything to do with the coaches’ abilities to instill good football fundamentals in our players, but they aren’t getting it done. It’s really surprising to me because I thought with GA’s attitude and demeanor, those things would be top priority. But now I wonder how much involvement GA really has in all of that. He has appeared to let his assistants take the reigns until recently.

      • You start off saying the right things, but then you devolve into this irrational hate-GA disease.

We’re really young. We have what, 16 seniors? And only half of them are holdovers? That’s piecemeal, not leadership.

We have a lot of frosh and sophs getting reps. It’s not as much as in each of the past two years, because those that played got some experience and can now keep some of our frosh in the pipeline instead of on the field. But it’s becoming apparent even those upperclassmen who stuck around can’t carry this load. So we’re left with watching Irvine, Dunn and Crawford getting burned.

I know DBs have the shortest memories. But these experiences are what make good young talent s like those kids into great players. As good as they are, I think we will see that great play before this year is out. You’re only a frosh for so long before that excuse wears off.

The previous post about the 2014 team is what makes me giggle when you all start to get all angsty about recruiting rankings and what you’re going to wear to the prom and shit. We’re recruiting better athletes and players than were on that team. There’s no failure other than missing out here and there on this or that kid. Boo hoo… short memory… go get the next kid.

I know this is going to set off all the insincere gnashing of teeth that has been common up to now, but if you think Hufanga was ever going to go anywhere where his cousin isn’t, you are the fool. We get to see his cousin play this weekend, those of us who will actually watch the game.

        • We lost plenty of recruiting battles from 2006-2009, and we won an average of 9 games per season during that time. There are bigger things to worry about.

As has been pointed out before, GA’s 2 and 3 stars are generally better (at least on film) than MR’s 2 and 3 stars were in the later years.

        • I don’t know, the 2014 team LOOK like better football players to me. Time will tell on your youth theory, Jack. If I had to bet, I would say the program is in the Kansas/Rutgers slide. I hope I’m wrong. If they are better athletes as you subscribe, then better results should show in 2018 and 2019, if not then where do you look for answers? Coaching?

          • We’re in a rebuild purgatory with a deficient O scheme. If we ran that one dimensional O we saw against UW at the beginning of the year, we might have actually had a shot against UW. I don’t think we win. But keeping it to single digits would have been realistic.

But no. We passed the ball 50 times to start the season, and now we’re paying for it.

    • Lol ” blue chippers” I would consider anyone who makes the NFL a “blue chip
So that flies in the face of your played out rhetoric. Honestly people like Beav 2000 are what holds the fan base back with that little poor ol Oregon State weak ass mentality.

To quote Chris Rock: ” You low expectation having mufacka”

      Blue Chips:

      D.J. Alexander Seattle Seahawks
      Derek Anderson Carolina Panthers
Victor Bolden Jr. San Francisco 49ers
      Devin Chappell Kansas City Chiefs
      Brandin Cooks New England Patriots
      Scott Crichton Buffalo Bills
      Treston Decoud Houston Texans
      Obum Gwacham New York Jets
      Sean Harlow Atlanta Falcons
      Johnny Hekker Los Angeles Rams
      Andy Levitre Atlanta Falcons
      Sean Mannion Los Angeles Rams
      Matt Moore Miami Dolphins
      Steven Nelson Kansas City Chiefs

      Jordan Poyer Buffalo Bills
      Mike Remmers Minnesota Vikings
      Jacquizz Rodgers Tampa Bay Buccaneers
      Isaac Seumalo Philadelphia Eagles
      Terron Ward Atlanta Falcons
      Markus Wheaton Chicago Bears
      Dylan Wynn Cleveland Browns

This is either more or on par than schools who would probably fit your “kids with options” list like:

      Ole Miss
      Oklahoma State
      Nebraska (even)
      Oregon ( even)
      North Carolina
      Arizona
      Arkansas
      Arizona State
      TCU
      South Carolina
      Baylor
      Boise State
      Louisville

And a bunch of other pretty good programs that I don;t want to bother looking up. Please stop with the no one good wants to come to Corvallis falsehood.

  17. Bottom line……we don’t attract blue chippers, and I’ve seen zero indication this will change…..getting blown out is a big part of it, but we have to build by developing lesser recruits…..this isnt going to magically change…..kids with options aren’t coming to Corvallis. The ONLY chance GA has is to get better assistants…..and mainly a better OC….and someone who’s better at developing QB’s….may be too late

    • I’m so tired of all this stupidity.

Win (or pay players and their coaches), and we will get the blue-chippers knocking on our door.

Don’t win, and good players won’t come to play except to take the chance to be the hero when they catch lightning in a bottle.

      Everything else is relative.

    • Lol ” blue chippers” I would consider anyone who makes the NFL a “blue chip

          • We know. His uncle posted here. He wasn’t given a ship despite out-practicing Hekker. And this was during college. OSU football does not play to develop future All Pros. We play to win the games against opponents we face… or not. Turning away the two time Ray Guy winner for the future All Pro who could kick backward and was apparently a QB in high school, as we were told every game, was a neat deal.

But we had a dedicated ST coach who was earning $360k per year. So the decision must have been sound.

  18. That reminds me. Are we going to mount a charge to dump Nike?

I want you to look at it this way. Nike doesn’t give us any money. They supplement the coaching salaries, making our coaches beholden to them. They give us a bunch of plastic crap they call gear and report it as having a monetary value with a multiplier of at least .9.

And, although we’ve always known it, we now know that they actively played a game where they actively directed PSAs away from our school.

If that last one doesn’t upset you, then I don’t care about your recruiting rankings stupidity or any other stupidity you think has to do with getting players on campus. They were paid by one of our business partners to go to schools not named OSU. I know it’s a damned if you do/don’t situation. Because if they were paying for them to come here, I would also want them to no longer do business with my school.

Pretty much, they stink of corruption, and that’s their doing.

But it doesn’t bother anyone that we lost out on players simply because they were paid to not go here?

      • Same boat.

Let’s go with companies the kids know are the best for their respective sports. Do you think the volleyball players want to wear the sub-standard gear they do? I’d bet if you asked them what they would want, they would tell you they want Asics, maybe some Mizuno.

Football would be better served with a mix of gear. New Balance designs better cleats, especially for wide feet. Riddell makes football specific gear, some of which we already wear. Their cleats are superior to the big three. Doesn’t it behoove a school who has a kinesiology department to do the studies that would inform them of the best gear which best for their SAs?

        Ugh!

Nike hoops shoes are horrible on the feet. It’s like they don’t understand that feet get wider as they get longer. Adidas is guilty of the same. They both make a couple lines of court shoes which are actually decent for normal sized humans. But they’re not advertised as hoops specific and backed by a GOAT in some hyper-flashing commercial.

        • So – theoretically, given a staff that worked really hard and cared, really cared, could negotiate, for example, football shoes from one company, volleyball knee pads from another, swim suits (the kind that give a .01 second advantage) from yet another etc.?

          • Precisely.

And then sell the hell out THAT to any PSAs.

We care about you enough that we give up money to give you the best possible advantages while you’re a part of our school.

          • And we really would only be giving up money on volume merchandising. Like I said, supplement some of that loss with… we’ll call them labs. Have them do the supply chain and distribution legwork. It’s not like this stuff is some big mystery. But it is as if an oligopoly has managed to take hold. It’s going to take a public institution with some juice to make a market entry any more… you know… unless your product has cup holders.

          • Does anyone know if we really do make more on licensing (brand specific) than we would on merchandising?

            Is 30% of X more than 100% of Y?

    • I 100% agree with this and was trying articulate it back when the fbi news broke.
There is no way Nike would go out of their way to cheat on behalf of Oregon’s in state rival and poster child for all things hip and cool. We are always going to get their subpar product/financial support/etc because of who we are and who Oregon is.
That being said, why wouldn’t we want to take up sides with one of Nike’s direct competitors? At least they would have incentive to see us play well and possibly take over Oregon as the premier program in the state. Heck, they would probably even be willing to cheat for us, to help level the playing field that has been allowed to exist.

Under Armor and Adidas both have headquarters up in Portland and both companies are strategically positioning themsleves here to make it easier to poach Nike talent to come work for them. People with a grudge against Nike. So it’s not like we would be easily forgotten guven that we’re only 90 minutes away.

      • I was in agreement with you until the news broke. If we were going to play the game in any way, we might as well do it with that leverage. Make us your poster child for beating back your largest competitor, and we will give you some material to use for future dumb full page ads after we didn’t win the national championship.

But now I’m of a mind to tell them all to go to hell. We can’t fire Nike with cause if we go to someone who did the exact same thing to us, minus the half-hearted glad handing.

Now we have to be proactive. And part of that is targeting the gear that is actually useful to our SAs and going out and getting it for them.

If we’re going to complain about the cost, then find valid workarounds. We have a wealth of labor available who would trade that labor for academic credits while learning applied business practices in the sports world, or, for that matter, best health and safety practices. I’m willing to bet such a program would have a long waiting line.

If not that route, let’s just go to the source and sign with Li-Ning. I’m sure they would love to get a foothold in Nike’s back yard. What are the other companies going to say? Those shoes are made in China, that’s un-American?

      • What’s ironic about Nike giving Oregon State subpar product/marketing, is they tell us that we should want the ducks to go undefeated every year, so that way when we play them in the Civil War and perhaps beat them, that would make the win more meaningful…yet we as a fan base want them to lose every single game they play.

So yes, I agree that using the same rivals clothing line is like Home Depot trying to buy their materials from the same supplier/vendor as Lowes. Sure they offer the same electrical supplies for the most part, but other than that, there are plenty of other options out there to rival the other from.

They don’t even offer the same brand of paint!(Behr paint at HD vs. Olympic/Valspar at Lowes)

  19. anyone else notice that Danny Moran hasn’t had a story in three days (as evidence by the on-line queue, anyway)? Goe has taken Gina’s place since she left but now he seems to be flying solo on that beat.

  20. PHIL STEELE REPORT:

In the last meeting (2014) the Trojans won 35-10 and Oregon State has not won in Los Angeles vs USC since 1960 (23 straight losing trips). USC won their home games by 21 points per game in 2016 and by 13 points per game this year. Oregon State’s average road game score is 25-55. Oregon State is only averaging 322 yards per game, but that is just 9 below what their opponents normally allow. They have taken on a tough #27 schedule, but USC has faced the 2nd toughest slate and is off a loss. Both teams are very banged up and USC played most of last weeks game without 3 starting OL. Oregon State is also banged up so I will call it right where Vegas thinks it will be.

  21. NCAA making a small but very meaningful change. Starting next year they will be seeding the baseball tournament 1-16. Pairing the #1 seed vs the 16 seed in the supers and so on. Most significant change will be travel since regionals won’t be paired by geography as much.

      • Exactly, Beavs will get hosed, so it’s not even worth watching.
As of now I’m done with NCAA baseball due to Greg Street. We’ll see if time/Spring changes that.

      • It will still fluctuate with the patented “SEC Randomizer!” ESPN and SEC collaborated to create this amazing patented technology that randomly manipulates strike zone dimensions to ensure a SEC-favorable outcome! Your friends will be amazed at the results!

But wait! There’s more!….Purchase the SEC Randomizer now, and get a non-official visit to an Addidas or Nike sponsored school AB-SO-LUTE-LY free!

  22. Man, I wish I started following this site when I was a student. I had some good inside info on the football team.

Anyways, just voicing my appreciation to everyone who posts and keeps me informed now. Keep it up!

    • Given the SEC’s poor showing in their own backyard the previous year, the NCAA did have to make amends to the SEC by throwing in an X-factor, aka Greg Street. Beavs win tournament if they have Heimlich. We’ll see how all that drama plays out next year!

  23. Well Sitakes BYU team is also trash so there’s that. Getting beat down by Boise on the way to 1-5..

So that leaves GA and his former assistants with gigs as undeniably the worst in the nation between:

    Brennan @ SJSU
    Sitake @ BYU
    GA

You have 3 of the worst FBS schools in the nation this year.

  24. From Bruce Feldman today:

Hearing more indictments are coming in college hoops. Expected to happen within the next two weeks, I’m told.

    • Heard Altman today say he wasn’t on campus for the visit of a commit (not committed at the time). Said Stubb ran point, and maybe he should let him do that more often. He was dour and shaking his head and talking out of the side of his mouth even more than he normally does. And he wasn’t making any eye contact except for when dropping that nugget about his assistant running point with a certain commit… when he wasn’t on campus.

      • Ha, says he never felt like anything was up because Arizona has their tradition, and USC is down in LA, so as far as he knew, they were just running clean programs.
Um…..you’re at Oregon. In Eugene, OR. You don’t even have the wxcuse of location or tradition to fall back on.
        Alsi, why so shifty?

        https://youtu.be/d0yF3I_Xk2w

        • With the exception of Vitale, I don’t think anyone should even pretend to not know this has been going on for decades. And I only say Vitale because I can imagine any time the subject came up he put his hands over his ears and said, “I can’t hear you, baby!”

It is so extremely disingenuous for a D1 hoops coach to feign ignorance of this.

I also like how he doesn’t say the same things the honest coaches say. He doesn’t say, “This is good. This will hopefully help to clean up the game. It’s always been an uphill battle against those who do this. But maybe now those of us who do it right will be vindicated.”

          Nope.

He says, “I hope is comes out in their favor,” or something like that.

Wtf, man? Nobody hopes criminals get off except for criminals.

  25. Looks like another former Beaver QB who was run out of town is startimg today. Kyle Kempt gets the start for Iowa St vs Oklahoma

    • On network TV now. I have no clue what OU is wearing. That has to be one of the worst looks ever for OU. They make Iowa State’s unis not look like high school unis.

Kempt is platooning with Lanning because Kempt doesn’t do that running thing required of their O, and their starter is out on a medical leave from football.

      Haven’e heard that one before.

Of the six QBs behind Mannion, I thought he would separate himself from the others once he got a chance. He threw the best ball of that group.

Mayfield doing the hurdle thing. This game sucks. I’m going back to watching some gardening show or something.

    • This was GA’s first season when Kempt left. Can’t really blame him at that time. There simply was no way to know what was going to happen in the future.
And its not like P5 teams were lining up to take Kempt once he left here … if he was “that good”. He had 2 years to “find” a team, but nobody seemed interested? hmm.
guess that makes most P5 coaching staffs idiots for passing him up. LOL.

  26. USC 56, OSU 10

Stating a prediction now that Oregon State will never win a P5 road game under Andersen. He’s that bad as a game manager. Doesn’t even know why one of his best wide receivers doesn’t get into a game and makes no statement acquiring as to such for 4 quarters against UW while we are getting beatdown and clobbered at home.

First year we bring in a real coach we will get a P5 road win. Until then teams will continue to beat us left and right by 30 points even if they bring their ‘D’ game. This is nowhere in the ballpark of what Ray promised Beaver Nation. Beavs have become the Worst P5 program under all talk AnderPants.

    • I’ll take that bet.

If he does, you continue to make the same boring, dour tartan posts you’ve made for years on end. If he doesn’t, you continue to make the same boring, dour tartan posts you’ve made for years on end.

      Lose/lose for everyone.

Maybe if Andersen finished the west side, he could win a road game?

    • That seems most likely. We’ll see if USC only has 40% of their O-line like they did last week. They were also missing their best DL. If we get the same team that went to Wazzu, we could play them moderately well into the 4th. If they’re at full strength, keeping it within two scores until te late 3rd is my best expectation.

The nice thing is we have nothing to lose. Last week and this week were pegged losses at the beginning of the year. That’s why all this fake angst about “the state of the program is worse than my mom’s tuna casserole” garbage doesn’t even rise to the level of kinda interesting. It does say a lot about some people and their insecurities.

Since we got nothing to lose, I’m calling an upset.
      Beavs win 25-24

  27. Whoever started the Hodgins bullshit rumor appears to have lied his ass off. Why would Hodgins tweet positive things about the coach if he hated him. Some of you turds are really pathetic. Just keep making shit up to support your thoughts. The pathetic liars on this board should just leave Beaver Nation. You f’ing suck
