Gary Andersen and Oregon State “mutually part”…

773

Wow.

Go Beavs!

Have to wonder if he resigned for health reasons like Urban Meyer…he looked like shit and was clearly being eaten alive; I wrote just on Saturday that best case is he retires for health reasons. I’ll be curious to hear what went down. Either way, this is good news. Now just hire the right guy. I’d take a chance on B. Baldwin.

  1. Before any speculation about who the next man up will be, this needs to be said: GA was a class act and his waiving compensation may go down as a pivotal moment in OSU history that prevents another long losing streak.

      • You’re wrong. Head coaches or potential head coaches have egos the size of Texas. In their mind, they will be the one to turn it around with their system and their assistants. This is an opportunity to coach in the PAC-12. Oregon is down and it shows you can now win the State.

  2. One of my friends has a theory that he left without having to be bought out of the staff agreed to not divulge any of his locker room drama so he would have a better shot in his next interviews.

    Thoughts?

    • Interesting theory, and something was going on behind the scenes with all the reports of drinking, banging co-eds, the mind games, etc.

I think it was probably a combination of that and his health, just because he looked so much worse this year…like zero sleep for months. But who knows.

    • Not having people burn that bridge or OSU break the law isn’t a good reason for leaving $13m on the table.

That kind of scratch buys a lot of rocking chairs from which you can laugh at those people.

  3. HOLY SHIT

Well I’m shocked. I did not expect this to happen at this point in time.

Please please Riley stay in Nebraska DON’T GET ANY IDEAS SMILEY MCGEE!

  4. I think people are not factoring in that GA leaving might hurt our chances to get a new coach.

He basically is saying he doesn’t think he can fix the situation here. It confirms the worst fears many would have had about taking a job here.

    • Disagree, just means we might have to get a young, up and coming coach, which is fine if we get the right one. Bet there are some retreads who would want the job, too, but I think a younger guy with fire is a better option.

      • Agreed, I highly doubt this will scare anyone off. If it does then we probably wouldn’t want them as a coach anyways. Most of the problems were created by GA which were also problems that dogged him in Wisconsin sooooo….

        • Lots of “actually, being seen as a bad destination is a good thing” spin.

Ask a school like Kansas if scaring people off is a problem.

  5. A friend inside OSU tweeted the news- Just when you think Ed Ray isn’t paying attention – you find out he has been all along. At least I hope so. When I think of the fanfare; Andersen’s arrival out of the plane etc., what a sad ending for all. DeCoud had high praise for Cory Hall. We’ll see.

  6. My list:

    Jonathon Smith
    Jim Leavitt
    Beau Baldwin
    Troy Calhoun
    Mario Cristobal
    Rocky Long
Bo Pelini (long shot, but with his baggage he is not going to get make looks at FBS schools.)

  7. Major respect boost for GA in truly accepting accountability by waiving compensation. I never would have expected that. Maybe the biggest man pants thing he’s done.

Sad it didn’t work out with him, but we have a second miracle chance. Amazing.

  8. My gut reaction was GA was classy for leaving OSU with money on the table, but say it turns out he got a better offer from another school: do we still feel that way?

I need more info before confirming he’s classy.

I feel like this has to be for health reasons. He has a wife and kids, and he was in his office 24/7 by all accounts. The dude was so worn. In interviews he was tired, apathetic, and looked like the grim reaper.

    • He’s gone. I don’t care if it’s because he won the lottery. He’s gone. As long as he doesn’t go trashing the program, it’s all good.

    • Don’t think he has a better offer since his results as a hc were bad. He’s done being a power 5 head coach. No small school can offer him that kind of money.

I think he’ll get picked up somewhere after a year or two off and probably have some success.

Be very curious why he’d leave money on the table. Not very smart.

  9. Interesting. I think maybe the *most* interesting thing will be to see who starts this weekend. If we see drastically different starters, then there was a divide between coaches, not just players.

Also, fuck Jonathan Smith, I don’t want him. He’s like Helfrich. Helfrich looked like an idiot with bad players at Colorado. Suddenly, Chip Kelly brings him a ton of recruits at Oregon and people think he’s a genius because they’ve got a ton of talent.

    Smith is the same way.

I’d be more into Beau Baldwin, if we didn’t burn that bridge by ignoring him the first time.

  10. Canzano is saying that GA told him that if he thought he couldn’t win here he would walk away. And that’s what he’s doing. He didn’t believe him at the time but now he’s waked away from 12 million dollars.

  11. You have to think it’s something more than just thinking he can’t win here. He hasn’t really tried anything different yet. His defense was definitely improving. Offense has been pathetic so he could have tried a new OC, etc. He doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would give up without trying everything possible. He also mentions it being a tough time “personally”, so that points to some outside issues.

  12. Is it only GA gone?

So we’re stuck with McGiven and the bozos still? Hopefully Cory Hall is a badass and demotes that fucker, McGiven.

  13. NiceBeaver just told me Bleacher Report is saying Les Myles.

What a weird fit that would be. I’d take him, I guess…good recruiter, right? Can’t see him wanting to live in Corvallis at all. I don’t buy it.

  14. Let’s talk about Cory Hall being in charge.

I find that designation the most interesting part of all this. Are the other coordinators out the door? I would have to imagine that Kevin McGiven is done. Or should be done.

But what about Clune? Wouldn’t this seem like a slight?

I mean…what the hell, maybe just a realignment of the duties of the remaining staff will end up making this a more tolerable team to watch for the rest of the year. Or maybe Hall ends up getting a chance to prove his mettle?

Either way, I’m looking on the optimistic side of this. Something different will be on the field against Colorado.

    • I’m excited to see what Hall can do. He was successful as a high school HC in California, he’s got an NFL playing pedigree, he’s got a rep as a great recruiter. Might be just the opportunity for him to shine…

  15. Well…..I’ll admit I was 100% wrong about GA. Thought he was an improvement over Riley. That said…….

If OSU brings Riley back after Nebraska surely shit cans him? I am done with OSU forever. No men’s hoops or baseball games either. Bring Riley back and they won’t get one red penny out of my fucking pocket. Tickets, donations. Nothing. I highly doubt I’m the only one that feels this way.

Your move Scott Barnes and Ed Ray

  16. Something is up with his health. i’m suspicion that the wife isn’t 100% happy in Corvallis being 1/10th the size of Madison and GA gone all the time. i can see him simply walk away from coaching for a few years and get his life and health in order. Maybe he stays in Corvallis and no taking the money makes for a cordial environment around town.

    • His wife lived in Logan…doubt it was that.
She probably does care about his health and him never being home, though. He was declining right before our eyes in the interviews. Physically, but also mentally…my GF commented how he was starting to sound like Riley…he was mentally confused/shot.

I appreciate the move, even if it was for personal reasons like health or selfish reasons like a better offer. It leaves me liking GA, which is how I felt about the hire. If this dragged on it was headed toward the path of just hating the guy and thinking he might ruin OSU for a decade.

  17. I said a few weeks ago Barnes better have a short list…Andersen is flakey…a “builder” who leaves Wiscy because a “higher power told him too?”

Would be interesting if Barnes actually was calling out the performance and directing change, and Andersen left because of it. Then it might be that Barnes will be a manager….

Andersen’s going to be suspect as a HC now isn’t he? Maybe a DC in his next stop?

  18. I’m reading and gathering as much information as I can. Canzano said “GA” was frustrated about $1 million locker room project was frozen? First Ive heard of that. Im trying to gather facts before I feel something on this matter.

  19. Barnes saying it’s a tough time personally makes it sound like Andersen’s going through health/personal issues.

Don’t think Andersen reads angrybeavs, but if he does, thank you for all the hard work you put into Oregon State football and for pouring yourself into the young men in the program. We may not have won much, but I’ll always be grateful for you breaking the seven year losing streak to the Ducks. Your willingness to leave $12.7 million on the table speaks volumes about your character.

Now, let’s go get a young, up and coming head coach to take this program forward. My personal choices:

    Alex Grinch
    Beau Baldwin
    (maybe) Johnathan Smith
Heck, maybe Cory Hall if he does good enough in the interim.

Also, I think we’re going to win against Colorado now. Players will be hyped up and ready to go for sure.

  20. So I guess we’ll lose Petras now…kid loved GA.

Need some details on how long Hall will be interim. Rest of the season? Are they trying to hire a permanent coach to finish this season, etc? It would be nice to get a permanent coach in there ASAP for recruiting. Nobody is going to commit or stick with a commitment under these circumstances.

      • It really depends on who the coach is, how well he recruits, and how many players decommit and/or transfer. If they can keep the roster in-tact and keep the commits, and get a guy who can recruit, it might not have to be a losing team for long. The missing pieces are an OC and QB. If the new guy sees that and addresses it, then it could be quicker than people think.

    • >Are they trying to hire a permanent coach to finish this season, etc? It would be nice to get a permanent coach in there ASAP for recruiting. Nobody is going to commit or stick with a commitment under these circumstances.

I’d think the issue with that is, it’d probably have to be somebody currently out of work. Somebody like, say, Alex Grinch isn’t leaving Wazzu mid season with a top 10 and undefeated team.

Hopefully we’re ready to pounce on somebody before bowl season starts. I’d love to see somebody from the defensive side with a completely open mind to bringing in a young, creative OC. And, as always, we need to recruit better.

    • Why sell Hall short so soon? Let’s see how the players respond to him. I like him as a dark horse candidate to take this opportunity and run with it. If he wins the locker room and knocks off a couple of Pac12 teams this season, he could stick…

  21. Funny how Jack accused McM of running when the going got tough, and meanwhile the coach he ran from just did the same, only on a much bigger scale in the middle of a season!

That’s going to take Jack like a week of hamster-wheel rationalization to figure out.

    • Or he’ll characterize Andersen similarly….or potentially respect him for leaving the money…

Or something else, but it won’t take a week.

        • I would think you all are stupid for not understanding it.

I also wouldn’t hesitate to say so.

          It’s pretty simple.

Although, some of you will still try for whatever reason.

Ftr, MM running away and not caring about his teammates because of an entitlement issue is precisely your argument for him leaving. Don’t lay that on me.

          • Incorrect on what one?

Why does angry think MM left the program? Tell me it’s not because he felt he was entitled the starting gig, and I’ll tell you you’re a liar. angry explicitly and repeatedly wrote this. He also created an unsubstantiated and malignant narrative based on it.

            Not my fucking horse!

    • Not really.

When have I ever wavered on this?

If he or his wife have stage four cancer or something health related, I sympathize.

Otherwise, he’s now ineligible for rehire.

  22. Does anyone think it’s weird that Baldwin has HC experience and didnt get interim HC. This is strange that the DB coach is HC. When do we think we see the total fallout on this coaching staff?

    • I think maybe Baldwin is just slowing down with age (/too many Diet Cokes) or is having health problems of his own. That would explain a lot of things.

    • Here my take. Barns, Rey and Andersen all had a sit down. The result of which is them all agreeing GA would leave. They asked him point blank who he thought had the support of the players, who would be the best man for the job and GA said Hall.

This is being presented as a mutual agreement. There is no reason to suspect Barnes wouldn’t take Andersen at his word.

I don’t think GA had any confidence in his coordinators at this point.

    • No. Baldwin is too old. Barnes wisely went with the younger guy who players respond with and who portrays Oregon State as more youthful and energized. Best choice for interim on this staff by a wude nargin. Turn the leaf. He has a chance to give 110% and see if he can get a few wins and give hinself a chance at HC with the sky the limit. In the neantine Barnes considers names like Miles, B. Baldwin, Kelly, Briles, Calhoun, etc. The excitement and momentum for a new beginning of Oregon State football remains high and with an exciting hire optimism for strong ticket sales and wins carries through the entire offseason. Culture needs to change beyond just HC though. All besides Hall should be on the outside looking in. Maybe the next HC has a spot for Hall as a good recruiter. Beyond that he needs to bring in his own staff. Mike Parker needs to step down for the good of Beaver Nation and a proper reset as Barnes has stated. Next voice of the Beavers needs to be found.

  23. You could tell Ed Ray was fucking done with Riley, especially after all the bullshit he caught/had to deal with after the Brenda Tracy story.

    No way he’s back here.

  24. I was just watching the other day the YouTube video of Alvarez reacting to Andersen’s departure. He was direct, didn’t blink, say it wouldn’t be a setback for the program, he always has a short list, and Wisconsin would move on…he was so direct and blunt I think the reporters struggled with the lack of clichés and political correctness.

Let’s see how Ed Ray and Barnes do now….

  25. Hate to say it, but I’d take Sarkisian over most the names being thown out…..

Also, very strange that a coordinator is not the interim…..

  26. Well, at least OSU football is interesting again. Hopefully in the near future it will be interesting because they’re playing the game well and winning more than losing.

I think Colorado is going to be on high alert for extra-motivational play by OSU on Saturday…

  27. GA era ends very oddly. Some final thoughts: I had more respect for him than Riley, even though he was an equally bad (if not worse) coach. I leave this era with no hard feelings toward him. Like, he made some really really bad key decisions in player personnel and staff, and those sealed his fate. It was hair-pulling to watch. But since he left without us having to pay a buyout, it’s redemption. Never felt he wasn’t trying or didn’t care like with Riley. He tried, cared, and just wasn’t good enough in his analysis process. Hope his health is okay, hope he lands on his feet as a DC or even some TV work, etc. Something with less stress where he can live in some small town he likes and keep chugging.

(Subject to change as the story develops/new info comes into the fold).

    • Hey guys, since we have a virtual ton of things to talk about here’s some questions for you all.

      1) Current Players- do you guys thing Gary left the cupboard bare? My personal thought is that aside from the QB/OL/DL I think we actually have a pretty serviceable group of skill players and linebackers and that a coach with a clear vision can at least make an offense and defense pretty interesting going forward and they would just have a few position groups they could go for broke on.

      2) Current Coaches- Who’s in? Who’s out? Who should we keep?

I would love it if we kept Lockette and Hall. I’m mixed on Clune…don’t think the defensive struggles are his fault. Woods’ sucked at OL in my opinion.

Not sure, what do y’all think?

      3) Up and comer, Les Miles, or Rebel coach of some kind?

      This should be interesting…

      That’s all.

      • clean house…Bring in new staff and no cronies. I want a hodgepodge of assistants that don’t necessarily “Get the band back together”.

    • Butthurt Brayden, or something to this? Marcus liked every tweet I made about GA butchering the QBs. Some other players like Nick Mitchell made “rub it in GA’s face” type tweets.

I think he lost the players over those personnel decisions. I extended an offer to Brayden to write me if he wants to talk.

    • Tyner tweets:

“GA is one of those guys you want to keep in contact with after football. Hurts to see him go, truly going to miss this man. Thank you for the opportunity you have given me. Love you coach!”

  28. It will be interesting to see if it was Andersen who held his staff back in “round peg in a square hole” with the offense. Will be interesting to see also if the staff can improve the level of play on the field by Andersen’s departure. I was happy he came, but glad he’s gone for different reasons than Riley. Andersen obviously wasn’t having fun anymore and it showed in the pressers and interviews.

    • I am ready to serve as your new coach. Been fine tuning my Angrybeav offense for years.
I can’t promise much more than really entertaining pressers, but am willing to have virtual OC’s.
Angrybeavs call the plays in real time. No pussy zone read shit. Wisconsin style beat the shit out of you.
Willing to work for 2 million per and unlimited beer from selected microbreweries. Let’s go!

    • GA just parroted what McGiven said about the O and having to score in this league and all the same coachspeak. I’m pretty sure he was honest when he said he fully delegated it.

  29. All ADs have a mental list of coaches they’d go after if there was an opening. We’ll see who Barnes has. He hired Pat narduzzi at Pitt. That was a good hire for them. Going through Barnes history, I don’t know that there is an obvious candidate.

  30. I have a feeling that administration told Gary to fire one or both of the coordinators and he refused. He seemed loyal to a fault. I doubt we will ever know for sure.

  31. If news comes out that there were bad things happpening behind the scenes, will you still think he is a stand up guy. This whole situation is unprecedented. I also think its weird that this is happening under an athletic department staff that has ties/relationship with GA. Im not one to wear a tinfoil hat, but this feels like there is more to this story. If other coaches are gone with GA, there is more to the story.

  32. Damn, players have said nothing but good things about Hall, but dude has no resume. One way to find out I guess.

Also find it interesting re Dave Baldwin not getting interim. Seems like maybe his demotion was voluntary and he’s not interested in sitting in the big seat. He has a legit resume.

  33. Geez, now the motto in the new locker room is going to have to change….what was it?

    [ ]
    [ ]
    Play great defense?
    Win the 4th quarter?

Expect some fund raising calls for paint…

  34. So what are the simplest explanations that leave us with a coach who’s willing to leave $13m on the table?

    I would go with these:
    1A. Health
1B. Barnes told GA to fire A, B, C or all of them. GA said he runs the show and will manage his assistants, or he will leave. So Barnes said, “I write the checks.”
    3. He just doesn’t feel it anymore, and he’s tired of trying to get everyone on the same page.
    4. The weird rumor about sex with co-eds was true in some way worse than just the younger staff dating.
    5. Unbeknownst to the public, he was verbally abusive and stepped over the line.
    6. Something sinister or criminal involving him, his coaches or the players has occurred or has been uncovered.

I doubt it’s 5 or 6 since recruits have been and are still on board and are in communication with some of the players.

    • If there’s a scandal and OSU knew about it but let him walk under the airs that he’s a good guy… that will not be a good look for OSU.

    • For the simplest explanations, I’d go with 1A, 1B, and 3, with the addition that maybe his identify and self satisfaction are solely tied up in his identity as a head coach. I’ve seen a few people walk away from good paying jobs for that reason, and everyone else was just amazed. But they didn’t define themselves just by employment….

    • Where did the sex scandal rumors come from? All I’ve seen in here is that a coach banged a student… are there any other details to this rumor?

      • Someone said it was drunken frat boy sex stuff while on the clock and on road games. It was rightly dismissed as trolling. But if something like this happened, it could theoretically bring down a head coach.

      • Someone I have spoken with in the past about issues and trust reasonably well emailed me with that info. It was in the tips/gossip thread. Go back and read that thread. It’s all there.

Coaches getting hammered in the hotel before games, coaches banging co-eds, etc.

Fwiw, I got another email from a dad who’s son is on the team, and part of it pertaining to this:

        No talk about chicks.

One of my sons roommates is a starter on O line. Would have heard if there was crazy things or rumors.

So, who knows. People sometimes have agendas/bias etc. We’ll never know the truth unless someone has hard evidence.

    • My guess is that Barnes, who’s spent a ton of time watching the team practice lately, doesn’t have much faith in McGiven or Clune.

    • Doubt its a race thing. The interim coach is usually the one who has the most connections on both sides of the ball.

My guess here is Andersen recommended Hall to be the interim. We’ll see when the press conference happens.

    • In Colorado – watched Wazuu/O game alongside some Colorado/Arizona viewers – Colorado fans griped a lot about Colorado’s defense. Happy for Wazzu and based on what I saw on tv – Willy Taggart seemed engaged with his players and especially their new qb. I will always dislike nikedom but WT seems like a good guy.

  35. Beau Baldwin? No
    Jonathon Smith? No
    Alex Grinch? No

Watch OSU fuck this up and hire Matt Wells or kick the tires on that geezer Rocky Long, lololol.

  36. Quick hot take for who the next head coach could be,

Hire immediately if they want the job:
    Les Miles
    Chip Kelly

At least pick up the phone and ask
    Brent venables – Clemson dc
Bryan harsin – Boise State hc

Guys who will be mentioned non stop but should not be hired.
Jonathan Smith – not ready to be a hc.
Mark helfrich – would hire as oc.

    Likely available after the season
Kevin sumlin – would be a home run hire if a&m fired him.
Bret beliema – would not be a good fit
Butch Jones – I would not hire this guy.

      • Because he’s an instant upgrade on the O side, one we’ve spent some time tooling for that kind of O but not implementing anything well.

The expectations at aTm are unholy. They pay good money for their players. They want a return on that investment now.

Not sure that makes him a home run. Maybe something of a ground rule double?

      • Proven head coach at the power 5 level. Good recruiter. Great track record with QBs. Offensive guru.

Has a connection to the current staff. Phillips was the wr coach under sumlin at Houston.

  37. I would hope that we try to find someone who is hungry to get into the Pac12 because they’ve had success at a “lower” level.

    What about…

    Beau Baldwin (EWU coach)
Jeff Horton or Bobby Hauck (Co-Associate Head Coaches at San Diego State)
    Ken Niumatalolo (Navy coach)
    Troy Calhoun (Air Force coach)
    Tee Martin (USC offensive coordinator)
Jimmy Lake or Jonathan Smith (UW coordinators)
Brian Ferentz (Iowa OC, son of HC Kirk Ferentz)

  38. The players’ attitudes this weekend will be telling. Do they play inspired and with new life? Or do they come out flat and depressed like they all just broke up with their girlfriends?

  39. I have to give GA credit for running what at least appeared to be a clean program. GPA’s were up across the board. Never heard about players getting in trouble with the law in his 3 years. He seemed to do a really good job with preparing players for life after football, just not a great job at preparing them for football.

  40. Josh Mitchell had a reactionary tweet that has since been deleted.
    Something to the effect of

“fact, it’s nearly impossible to build a winning program when you run a majority of the talent out of town”

      • but it is telling that a faction of the team is probably pretty butthurt about the way he ran guys out of town so quickly and easily.

        • I agree, there are a lot of them, but it’s hard to figure which ones were legit bad and not playing for that reason, and which were in the doghouse for being Riley guys. Take Villy. He is legit bad and a Riley guy, and yet he plays. Same with Bolden. Bolden was better than Villy…more explosive. But to play Villy over Hodgins (who is their guy) contradicts things. Then they (sort of) played Nall, a Riley upperclassman, though messed with his head a lot.Bottom line is I can’t figure out the pattern. They either played favorites based on personality or some other traits, or they legit can’t recognize talent. With regard to the QBs, they ran every Riley QB out of town. Why didn’t they do that with the WRs? They also kept Brennan as WR coach. They seem to have some vendetta with QBs, or just incompetence. I really don’t know. I don’t see patterns, only chaotic, arbitrary, and contradictory decisions, and so it makes it hard for me to deduct anything from chaos.

I’ll never understand it. To me those decisions are easy: play the best guy and keep your emotions out of it. I feel the latter, emotions, factored into decisions. Like if a guy complained at all (e.g. Nall saying he didn’t get enough carries) they’d get punished. When in reality the coach should never do that in the first place, but if he does, maybe look in the mirror and realize he should get his best player more carries.

  41. Just re-read the USC thread (Oct 7th) because I knew I wrote this somewhere regarding all the buyout talk.

Also, best case: GA retires for health reasons. He looks like shit, looks burnt out, and he has to realize he’s going to die soon if he’s stressing out as much as he says. He might go the Urban Meyer path and retire a few years. That would be best for all.

    Kind of eerie…2 days later.

    • Ahem! And I – I said I hoped he would have the grace to resign – not truly believing he might – but he did have the grace to resign.

      • want a sticker? Better yet, go get a lottery ticket because you can “predict” the future!

Kidding aside, a lot of people were saying that he should retire and/or fired, but didn’t think it would happen due to the buyout. Alas, the university and Andersen came to an agreement that is a win/win(if health reasons are involved), or win/lose(if he was told by Barnes, “I don’t know how you managed to get to Wisconsin and Oregon State and last 4 1/2 years in 2 P-5 conferences, but you’ve managed to do it. It’s been a good effort, but I think you ought to consider retiring and take an assistant position elsewhere if you can salvage this situation. Best of luck to you and your family.”)

  42. Brandon Sprague on the radio was throwing a few names out earlier today. He didn’t want to dive deep into speculating on names yet, but he said OSU could be smart to go with an offensive minded HC (like a Baldwin, and Jonathan Smith to a lesser extent) and then to try poaching Oregon’s Keith Heyward away as an up and coming DC. I can’t say I totally disagree. Heyward has been their best recruiter, so you damage your in state rival while also getting a coach who is on the rise in the coaching ranks.
I also think we need to see how Hall handles this interim job. What happens if he starts winning games? To me, he is the glue for OSU when it comes to recruiting these last 1-2 years.

    • I like Hall. Hell of a player. Seems like a legit good guy.

Seems like no matter what a guy we need to try to retain.

Has the wife come around on Corvegas though…

      • He also ditched us at the end of a recruiting cycle, and took players with him to go coach for a dirt bag.

I know he was underpaid for how well he was recruiting, but he left in a dick way. And his DB’s didn’t turn around to look for the ball

        • 2008-2011…Riley Coasting and Banker being Banker, wouldn’t you jump ship too? He went to:
          UW from 2012-2013(DB)
          USC from 2014-2015(DB/PGC)
          Louisville in 2016
          Oregon in 2017

Longest stint was Oregon State…seems like he likes on State more than other universities based on so many coaching changes since he left Oregon State under Riley and Banker.

  43. Don’t have time to look it up but was it the kat who was claiming to be friends with Hodgins who said there would be a shake up with the coaching staff coming soon? Seems pretty legit now.

Reach out to that guy to see if theres more info.

  44. Beaver head logo stays inverted until we know who the next head coach will be because the state of the program could still be in a tailspin and we’re back to 28 consecutive losing seasons yet again and Reser will never be paid off which means the athletic department goes belly up; which in turns means bye bye football or bye bye to the Pac-12. Are we really in that bad of shape? No, but could we be with the wrong hire? Absolutely!

  45. Anyone have a link to the press conference at 2:30?
I’m sure it will be boring. Hoping to at least get a timeline on the new hire and also confirmation McGiven will be gone (crossing fingers).

  46. Is GA basically the football program’s Craig Robinson?
Helped get facilities built, but ultimately wasn’t a good X’s and O’s coach who let his frustrations show through.

  47. Cory Hall says no change in coordinators. That’s only useful and HORRIBLE answer from this press conference.

There goes his goal of winning against Colorado, the only goal he stated he had.

Oh well. This season was a trainwreck anyway.

    • Can’t imagine any other answer prior to meeting with his staff. Let’s see what happens over the next few weeks and during the bye week.

    • but later somebody asked Hall what roles the coordinators would have going forward and he had to fight back a grin and said something to the effect of “We’ll see”
He wasn’t able to fight back that grin either, which was pretty telling to me that he sees where some of the problems are originating and he already has an idea of what needs to b changed/shuffled to shake things up. As a defensive coach, I would suspect he’s(rightfully) not very happy with the offense

    • He said he is going to talk to the staff. Instead of getting into it before he had a chance to talk to them directly, as a professional would do, he said this [press conference] isn’t the time to get into that.

  48. I think that we go all in for a big name:

    Bob Stoops
    Urban Meyer
    Nick Sabin
    Pete Carrol

Corvallis is special and so is this storied program. Someone is bound to recognize the potential here!

  49. I think Clownzano reads AB despite your chagrin….

“Andersen ran off Mike Riley’s recruits. He expressed open frustration with his assistant-coach hires. And he grew increasingly discouraged as the results just didn’t materialize.” latest article.

  50. Takeaways from the press conference:
    1. This was definitely an emotional decision for Barnes, he choked up at one point.
    2. When asked if there is a thing medical wrong with Gary or his family Barnes simply said “No”.
    3. No immediate coaching changes. Hall will evaluate the situation.
    4. Halls definitely comes across as genuine and a lot less coach speak. I sense the players will want to play for him.

      • True, but he would have said, “I can’t comment on that” or something like that. He gave a definitive “No”, which was interesting. Maybe the wife wasn’t happy he was in the office 24/7 and Gary wasn’t happy getting destroyed by 40 points every weekend. Probably pulls a Meyer and takes a year or two off, then reappears. It’s going to be hard for any program to believe in him though since this looks like quitting, and he looked like he quit on WI.

        • Barnes could be in the dark about any health issues. If he asked GA, he would probably say, “You’re going to have to ask my doctors that question.”

  51. Prediction:

-Hall demotes McGiven. Gets rid of the TJ Woods Co-coordinator thing.
-Promotes Baldwin to OC, asks him not to “reinvent the wheel” and instead call plays based around the players they have, not the players they wish they had, and get back to basics. I expect a much better offensive performance.
    -Keeps Clune in place.
-Demotes/fires Cookus from ST and maybe focuses some of his energy or reassigns Woods to ST (heard Cookus is awful), and Hall likely sees that.

Doubt any of these bozos will be fired, and that will likely be left up to the next staff, so the only thing motivating the remaining coaches will be the desire to find a new gig when they’re canned in the off-season.

    Impressions of Hall?

He seems fine for these six games but not a permanent fix.

    • That also offers them an acceptable out – they can leave if they don’t like it, but they receive an offer. And like you say, they may be motivated to show well for the next job….

    • Angry, I hope your prediction is correct. However, he answered the playcalling question with “The same guys will be calling plays” which to me suggests both McGiven and Clune will both remain in their position or he was just trying to keep the staff under control for now.

Having Baldwin call the offense would be amazing, only because the first Civil War was actually kind of fun to watch with the QB/wildcat/running formations and plays (though the outcome was a loss). On top of that, it would render the entire film sessions that opposing teams/coordinators would have from this year would go straight out the fucking window.

I’m optimistic for the future, but I think Hall will flub this in the interim.

      • But as NiceBeav noted, he smirked when asked if they play calling would all be the same, etc. And then he said he had to go talk to the coaches. Expect moving parts.

        • Maybe I’m just living in the “Luck o da beavs” and can’t imagine a world where someone handles a football decision with any level of competency lately.

  52. if you think about it, for the last three hires a potential coach said “I want that job.” OSU was pliable, and said “Okay” to Erickson, Riley (the second time) and GA in succession. The first time it worked out great. Thinking the process might duplicate itself, OSU admin. went with Riley, with mixed results. Convinced by the lazy press that Erickson was a fluke and Riley was the best OSU could get, three years ago they were surprised when a sitting P5 coach said “I want that job” and the search ended before someone in Corvallis asked the obvious question: “why?” Now, this time, for the first time since 1997, OSU has to flip this script and say “we want you because . . . . “

  53. This is just ridiculous news. Didn’t think GA had an ounce of quit him! If he doesn’t want to be in Corvallis then I’m really glad he’s leaving. Sad times at Reser right now

  54. Think how lucky OSU has been. Haven’t had to pay Riley, haven’t had to pay GA…

It’s crazy you’d have that with two coaches in a row. Luck o’ the Beavs in reverse!

  55. GA won seven games in 2.5 seasons. He was paid about $10 million during that period.

So he got paid more than $1 million per win. Even less for wins against P12 opponents.

    :(

  56. Telling quote from coach Hall:

” I have the energy and I’m energetic enough to keep the boys focused”

Do with that what you may….

  57. Does anyone remember a previous mid-season firing/resigning at OSU in any sport? Almost always these are off-season changes.

This just seems like there is more to this situation. If nothing else, Andersen could’ve at least finished the season if he was healthy and not in off-field trouble. Even if he announced he was stepping down at the end of the season, he could finish the season and allow OSU time to make a search.

Can OSU interview coaches who are currently employed? Do they need permission from the school?

Feeling bad for these players who are left in limbo. Unfortunately it seems some had already given up on their coach before he quit on them.

  58. If GA’s health isn’t the issue (no evidence of that yet, just speculating) I wonder if home life is the reason. Maybe GA cannot separate football from family, and all the losses and challenges with this team and staff have made him a bad husband and father. If that’s the reason he quit, then I completely respect that as well.

  59. If it’s not a health issue, I have to wonder if GA had a bit of a come to jesus moment. He had so much confidence in his decisions with the QB and new offense philosophy—then watched it fall apart before his eyes. That jives with how shell shocked he seemed in every post-game. He might have not been able to handle it so he ran. Leaving all that money on the table could be a mea culpa for those decisions.

  60. https://www.facebook.com/BeaverAthletics/videos/10155400373728127/

Here’s the recording of the press conference. Around 19:00 is when Eggers asks about the coordinators and play calling, etc. At this point, Hall first says “most definitely” when asked about the staff and coordinators, but that body language and smirk are pretty telling to me that he’s just giving the generic coach speak answer right now, but has changes in mind.

Also, earlier in the press conference, around 10:35, he says they’ll get around to the conversation of staff shifts later, but not at this moment. Basically keeps it open ended, which makes sense given that he just found out last night that he is being given the reigns.

    • Yeah, it makes sense. He’ll have one game to look at things from a head coach perspective. Hopefully he sees what everyone outside the program sees. But I also would not be surprised if Barnes has told he can move coaches around but will have leave firings/hirings for when the new HC is named.

  61. So Hall gets to go head to head with: MacIntyre, Wilcox (@ CAL) , Rodriguez (@ Az) , Graham, and Taggart (@Hole).

There’s some wins to be had there with some coaching reassignments and new energy.

Also, wonder if this makes Luton less or more prone to return this season, or has no bearing on his decision?

  62. Any time line on Luton?

Maybe moving Seth back to QB isn’t absurd after all? If not Garretson has to start running need as many threats as possible

    • Yeah, when has hiring a coach from Wisconsin ever not wor…

(Not intended to be a serious comment on the merits of hiring the guy).

  63. Hodgins tweeting “this one hurts” doesn’t match the narrative that he was disenfranchised and looking to transfer. Are you confident in your source Angry?

Most players coming out as disappointed except former player Breydon Kearsley saying you reap what you sow. Danny Moran retweeting many players comments.

  64. Sports writer of the year, Ken Goe, just posted the following on the fish wrap….

“The coaching staff is an absolute dumpster fire,” said one source who requested anonymity. “Back-biting, infighting, people going back and forth.”

    • Is this from having a run game coordinator, pass coordinator, OC and co-OCs last year? Maybe just assign one guy the big boy pants……

  65. Hall probably got the interim job because he wasn’t a longtime GA guy, right? More of a change and more of an impartial head man that can make changes to a staff that was largely brought over from USU/Wisconsin.

  66. How about focusing on the positive for a bit?
Good things to come from the GA era:

    “Go Beavers, how about that!”

    Civil War win

    “Anderpants”

Opportunity for a fresh start without tons of money spent buying out a contract

    Anything else?

  67. There’s a guy on /r/cfb claiming this:

    >I know for a fact from a personal source in the OSU program that this was going to happen (the AD knew it last week). Andersen and his family were miserable in Corvallis and want to move back to Utah. If that means Utah State again..I don’t know. They were so miserable in Corvallis they were willing to give up the contract. I have it on good authority that OSU will be making a hard push after Jonathan Smith. Also Mark Banker has been sniffing around the program too (don’t laugh).

  68. Names I am OK with:

    Chip Kelly
    Beau Baldwin
    Art Briles
    Dennis Erickson (3 yr deal)

    Important guidelines:
Hall only seriously considered with 3 more wins this season one of which is the Civil War.
4 year deal preferred with MAX at 5 years which is not preferred.
No extension short of consecutive 6+ win seasons or 8 wins.
No two year extensions short of consecutive 7+ win seasons and strongly prefered one of those has 8+ wins.
No extension of any sort short of a single year for 8 plus wins or consecutive 6+ win seasons if total winning percentage at OSU is not .500 or above.
No consideration of Riley at all unless as a QB coach or offensive consultant which is still strongly not preferred.
Mike Parker is gone after the season so that the new coach does not inherit the same defeated culture and it is an entirely fresh beginning for OSU football. (NON-NEGOTIABLE!!!)

Best of luck Oregon State. You have a rare opportunity for a real good hire at a key moment in OSU Athletics if you play your cards right a whole new day for OSU Football to inspire the next generation.

    • No
      Sure
      Hell no
      Past his prime(don’t repeat history)

Next hire needs to be asked, “who are your top 3 candidates for OC and DC?” If the names aren’t a good fit, then move on to the next candidate.

  69. So yours truly, good ole PBH, is in the running as an active candidate!!

I called the athletic department and was referred to a guy named Pressone or something like that? He thanked me for my interest. He said they would be evaluating my credentials and would get back to me. Looks good!!

  70. Dear Oregon St fans,

I’ve partied with GA. Dude’s a fucking light weight! Dennis Erickson was a drunk, now GA? I think you need to continue with the tradition of keeping us alky’s losing coaches employed and our comings and goings on the DL. I promise not to nail any of your coed’s as long as the ones down the road are fair game, K? Put in the good word for me with Barnes and Ray please. First round will be on me when I get there.

    Love,

    Cutty Sark

    P.S. I’m available

P.S.S. How many liquor stores you got in Corvallis?

  71. I hope Hall earns the job.. NFL background, college stops at multiple places.. Played at Fresno, presumably has SoCal recruiting connections.. He’s a young dude.. He sparks this team to multiple conference wins the rest of the way and establishes an identity with this team, I’m on board.

Experience can be a positive and Hall doesn’t have any HC experience but I would say experience only matters if your good at your job.. If you’re experienced but you suck at your job, experience has no value.. It is possible to be good at a job with minimal/no experience and become better at that job as a grow.. I hope Hall falls into that category..

I sincerely hope we don’t bring in some retread just because they’re “experienced”.

I think there will be much more to come out in the next few days that wrap up the GA narrative.. Lot of players backing him on Twitter.. But that’s to be expected in team sports.

Interesting time to be a Beaver.. When does basketball season start?! Not soon enough.

  72. Why the love by Beaver fans for J Smith?

What’s he done anywhere that suggests he’d be a good HC? Everything I have heard from Husky fans is they really dislike him as a playcaller/OC.

    • Agreed.

As for the current interim coach? Guy has only been in coaching for about 10 years, never been a collegiate head coach (he was at the HS level for 3 years. How’s that working out at UNLV?), never been an offensive or defensive coordinator. Yeah this should totally end well. Thinking it ends about the same as when another guy got handed the interim tag when Jay John got shit canned.

As for on a replacement note? Realistically, who has been a successful head coach that would want this job???

    • I think it’s (A) Washington’s current excellence and the hope it can translate to us, and (B) his connections to OSU and the hope it will help keep him here if he ends up being excellent.

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind it, but I’m also not sure he’s ready to be a head coach.

      • Washington’s excellence is their HC by a moon shot and very little to do with JC. In fact, I’d say their DC is next in line for their success. Smith would be low on the list. Riding those guy’s coattails. Not sure what he’s done to warrant a HC job. Husky fans don’t like him. None of this seems to be a red flag for Beav fans. So I think (B) is the reason why — emotions and connections to OSU. That’s not a good reason to hire a HC unless the guy is qualified.

I don’t get Smith. I understand Baldwin a lot more since his offenses put up huge numbers in the past, and Cal is much better than expected this year. Still a longshot with Baldwin, but he makes more sense to me.

        • Baldwin wouldn’t be the worst choice, but I still think the general principle behind Andersen’s hire (AKA hiring a defensive-minded coach instead of going all-offense like everyone else in the PAC-12) is sound. Hence, why I want a promoted DC like Grinch.

Heyward would probably be great, too, but I would have to hold my nose a little bit hiring a Duck coach.

        • Re: Smith — more issue over his recruiting subset being able to bring in the players necessary to complement whatever offense he decides to run, than necessarily his offensive philosophy.

What coordinators would he be able to convince to join him, would be another related concern.

    • Interesting…do you feel coach Andersen lost the team? Clarify what you mean by lost the team. That tells me he lost them in some capacity. Whether that means he lost faith in the program and he himself is having an identity as a coach crisis or if the players stopped caring. There’s a lot of ‘between the lines’ to dissect in the video. He kept saying ‘some guys’ and then at times ‘the team’ then other times it’s ‘we feel’.

  73. ” But Andersen met on Sept. 25 in the early morning on campus with athletic director and friend Scott Barnes.

That meeting took place Monday after a bye week. Andersen had just spent the off week fuming and fighting through his discouragement. Nine days earlier Andersen lost to Washington State 52-23, but he was frustrated that a $1 million weight room project had the funds temporarily frozen. Also, he had concerns about support from high-level administration at OSU, but he left the 7 a.m. meeting that day with Barnes feeling optimistic.”

Not going to link the article. Think ya’ll know where to find it.

Funding for a weight room project temporarily shelved. Wonder why. I find that interesting.

    • What weight room? The sports performance center is a first class facility.

Canzano mentioned a locker room? The locker room was finished last year.

    • Wasn’t the whole first year about the team setting records in the weight room? That was all fluff like I thought if they need a new weight room.

  74. Something doesn’t seem right about the whole situation. I need to know more,it seems like the truth is in some of the messages posted on here, but there is a lot that doesn’t seem fit here. If he didn’t want to quit then why not fire a coordinators? If he can’t control the staff then get rid of them. Maybe GA just doesn’t have the coaching tree to bring in new coaches? Is it that the Athletic Dept not supporting the football program, is funding being pulled? There seems to much more to this issue and it might be a bombshell. If we are not all in on football where does that put the Dept? We already are one of the least funded programs out there nationally. Why couldn’t he get it done, is it not being able to get players “qualified” to come here? I have lot of questions about where the Athletic Dept is moving forward and its leadership.

    • I agree, something isn’t right with all this & I want to know everything before I can pass Andersen off as a stand up guy.

  75. New head coach? We can’t sell ourselves short & need to take a hard look at the available big name coaches. Minus art briles, we can’t have him after that disaster he was a part of, it would give us an appearance of win no matter what it takes…

  76. Heard a rumor that GA just got his first glipse of the 2018 schedule over the weekend and saw Urban Meyer/Ohio State on the schedule, prompting the decision to quit

  77. Art Briles would be a disaster.. If winning is so important to you that Briles is a legit candidate then you have a mental disorder..

Let’s not forget these are young, impressionable men, that are developing into, what we should all hope, positive contributors in their communities.. I want my school to win, badly!! But not THAT badly.

  78. GA quit Southern Utah after a 4-7 season and went back to being Whittingham’s assistant. He obviously didn’t have the patience to work his way through the FCS ranks. He’s a bit of an odd duck.

      • I read a speculation-thing to the effect that he left the money on the table because he knows he has another HC gig lined up next season. I find that one hard to believe unless Matt Wells in on the hot seat and he wants to go back to Utah St. The money is not comparable.

  79. Wonder how Aric Williams is doing at Idaho?

Would be nice to get him on the next coaching staff as a position coach. Good player. Super personable, and was a good dude. Probably one of the best people on the squad from the DE era that had a lot of guys who could ball, but were some real dicks too.

Wonder if S Jax ever wants to get into coaching..

  80. I’m not gonna lie, I have pretty mixed feelings here. I really really hoped Gary was the man to take us to a great place. I thought he would be. I remember being so excited about him and the coachs he was pulling to be with him like it was yesterday.

I still do think he is a very very good person. I loved his demeanor and I know it killed him he didn’t turn things around.

But I also feel like the combo of losing coachs(Brennan, Odom, tuiaki? And sitaki). Really slowed things down and he had to grasp. Than he made a lot of errors offensively.

I personally wanted him to make a splash of a hire for oc, and be completely hands off offense. And part of me feels like he fell on the sword for his staff, as a true leader.

But part of me thinks he quit on us, he quit on his team, and he quit on what he said he never would…

That all being said, I hope we get a offensive coach. Someone who can develope a spread attack, and keep defenses off balance. I prefer the new coach to keep Lockett and rb coach as I think he has done a really good job with the backs. As well as definitly keep hall. Hall has kept the cbs playing well with tons of injuries as well as being a true pro with taking the reigns, regardless as how he does as a head coach.

I would than have either hall(if he does as good of a job as I think he will) be at minimum the dc. If he kills it the rest of the way keep him as hc. But worse case keep him as secondary coach and bring Hayward to be dc.

So the combo of hall and Hayward on defense. And Lockett at rb coach is who I hope we keep. Get a offensive minded coach that can instill a mentality to that side of the ball(preferably one like Arizona/Oregon in run first). Let the head coach develop the offense and invest in the best line coach possible. Literally the best offensive line coach we can get. Take a position coach from a great oline school and give him the oc title with head coach calling plays for a year or two.

That’s my hopes for the future. Go Beavs. Andersen as a person will be missed. Wish he coulda stuck around as a dc and we could pay bookoo bucks for him but lock in a stud offensive coordinator

  81. I blame DE for this whole cluster-fuck. That bastard found a home here and he had to go fuck around with the NFL again. We wouldn’t be in this damn mess! He would have been our happily soused Bill Snyder bringing JC gem after JC gem into the program each bowl eligible season.

  82. I actually don’t want a guy with head coaching experience, I’d prefer an assistant because they have a clean slate, they don’t have buddies they’ve worked with before. Give me a young hungry assistant that wants to hire the best staff out there.

And a guy that is open to bringing in JUCO guys, you ain’t winning at OSU without a heavy dose of JUCO talent.

  83. The Beaver Store is having a clearance sale on Big Boy Pants. Free Hip, hip socks with each purchase.

Who would have ever thought that MR would last longer at Nebraska than GA did here?
Some crazy shit has transpired in Corvallis in the past two and a half years.

  84. Angry asked why people would be interested in Smith. I’ll answer.

OSU connection has value and could help him sell the program
Assistant in places that have had success
Young hungry coach likely able to relate better to recruits
Former QB who might be better able to convince quality QBs to come to OSU

Now none of that means he should get the gig but I don’t agree with the belief that he hasn’t earned the right to be considered, if he demonstrates the ability to sell the program and hire quality assistants there is no reason to believe he couldn’t succeed at OSU. Plenty of guys with lesser resumes have had success.

(look at Mike Gundy’s resume for a guy with a thin resume that has succeeded at his alma mater).

    • What is it with Husky fans dislike of his play calling? It seems like UW has a fairly diverse offense with big play ability, use of TE’s, a ground game…

“Last season, Washington was 12-2 and hammered Colorado 41-10 in the Pac-12 championship game before losing 24-7 to top-ranked Alabama in the Peach Bowl. With Smith calling plays, the Huskies set school single-season records for touchdowns (77) and points (586) while averaging 41.8 points per game.”

Is the perception and/or discontent that he left possessions and points on the table or put the D in bad positions at key times?

I don’t think he should be handed the job, but I do think he should be in the pool of applicants to interview. He’s had time under Riley and Erickson, both of whom seem to be respected for their offenses and QB development….Smith’s had 6 years with Petersen, who has about an 83% career winning percentage as a HC and seems to pay attention to detail and run an organized program.

Hiring is one of the most important things any manager does, and Barnes should seek to facilitate the development of a competitive applicant pool and ideally end up with a challenging decision of picking from more than one qualified and compelling candidate. It may very well not be Smith, but why not have him in the applicant pool?

BTW, I noticed in one of the articles about GA ‘s departure that when he expressed interest in the OSU job they didn’t interview any other applicants. Is that even possible? Don’t they have to interview more than one candidate?

  85. What about Joe Salave’a? Great recruiter and D line coach. IMO, the next coach had to have NW ties and have a dynamic personality (i.e. Great recruiter). The list shrinks considerably with that criteria.

  86. One thing that worries me it will be Smith was that interview he gave just before the UW/OSU game a couple weeks back. Some local writer asked him if he ever considered getting into a head coaching gig. He answered that he was happy where he was and said something about waiting for the perfect opportunity, because you typically only get one shot at a HC job, so the job has to be a really good fit at the right place for him.

I worry that our boosters heard that and then turned the screws on Barnes/Ray to make this happen (like by withholding on the funds to finish the licker room project) Wonder if they went out of their way toshow GA the road ahead would be tough without their financial backing and that helped GA see the light.

Does anybody know where the Smith interview was posted?

    • Found it. I think somebody read this article and their panties got wet. Especially that last sentence.

Does Smith aspire to be a head coach one day?

“I think so,” he says, “but my favorite part of the job is the on-field coaching. Nowadays, head coaches have so many other responsibilities for the overall program.

“I know this: I would do it, for sure. But I’m going to be selective. You really get just one crack at it. I want it to be the right time, right place. I don’t think about it a ton. I’m enjoying what I’m doing. I have a great job, I get paid well, and I get to work with great guys. It would need to be a special opportunity for me to leave.”

      http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/373508-257236-ex-beaver-in-a-good-place-at-uw

          • You always set yourself up for the possibility someone might fail. It doesn’t matter who you hire, ultimately the mighty fail.

I am not saying Smith should be the guy but if he came to Barnes and Ray with a clear vision and plan to implement that vision I see nothing in his resume that doesn’t qualify him to be a head coach in 2018.

            Things I like about Smith:
            Offensive coaching background
College QB (a walk on no less)
A football nerd (by all accounts)
Worked under one of the best coaches in the country
Has a connection to the program

            Those are all positives.

Things I don’t like about Smith:
Doesn’t seem to have a commanding presence
No experience as a head coach (although for me, this isn’t that big of a negative and could even be a positive)
            No experience coaching defense

Things I don’t know about Smith:
How is he in the living room as a recruiter?
            How is he with boosters?
What connections does he have in the coaching world?

If he can explain his plan to handle the negatives (maybe has a clear idea of an assistant head coach defensive coordinator for instance) I think he could be a quality head coach.

At the end of the day being a head coach isn’t always about the X’s and O’s (every college coach is above average at those and that is enough) if you are willing to find the right guys for those but more about providing a face of the program and getting players to buy in to your vision.

Is Smith the right guy for the job? I don’t know but I don’t think he automatically isn’t because he went to OSU, to me that is a positive in his corner not a negative.

          • I’m not arguing that.

What I’m arguing is that is only a valid metric once a candidate passes muster and makes a final cut of four or so. It’s an “all things being equal” metric, not one that makes someone who isn’t qualified suddenly qualified.

  87. Out in the sports media world, a lot of lazy takes on who the next coach could be, so here’s my own lazy take.

The early signing period was going to be an advantage this year but now it’s going to be a huge disadvantage unless OSU signs a coach quickly. The signing period starts Dec 20. Looking back, GA was hired on Dec 10 in 2014. 10 days to put a recruiting class together? Not going to happen so Barnes needs to get moving quickly. If he waits until the season is done on Nov 25th, that give the new coach less than a month to secure recruits. Might not be much left after the first signing period. But it could just be the way it has to be this year to get the right coach. The current commits aren’t game changers so I’m not too worried that the coach needs to save the class.

Also there’s likely to be some firings in the PAC12 this year too so Barnes needs to get ahead of those programs (ASU, UCLA, UA).

I’m sure there are some dark horse candidates out there and some more coaches will become available after the season but this is a complete rebuilding job so the person who takes the job must be relentless in their efforts. The assistants hired will be just as important as the head coach.

My top choice is Venables from Clemson. He’s long been ready for a head coaching job and he’d bring quality assistants with him. (though if Sumlin came available, he’d be a 1B choice). Also as an assistant, Barnes doesn’t have to wait to hire him. He can get him hired before the season ends. Venables can get the recruiting going early. The hard part would be convincing him to switch coasts. He might be waiting for an SEC job to come open (aka LSU).

          • Bro, as soon as you 10 miles out of Portland, Oregon is pretty f’n redneck. It isn’t bayou redneck, but a happy medium between any urban colleges.

Best college town in the PAC 12

          • Miles is a terrible idea once you actually think about it. Like hiring Tubby Smith as the basketball coach here at Minnesota. Big name coach and has won a NC! Both were trending down and underperforming with every possible advantage relative to recruiting and facilities. He is past his expiration date. So he is going to do better with tons of disadvantages?

PS: his kid plays at Neb so they think he is going there.

  88. The draw-back to Venables is he would be a defense first guy again. If that isn’t an issue, Gene Chizik won a NC at Auburn and is a DC at North Carolina, call him.

Les MIles, Chip Kelly, Bob Stoops are all at home right now. Call them each first and see if they want the challenge and how much would it cost?

I think Sumlin would be a good 1B.
Beau Baldwin would be lower but a good fall-back, Trent Bray for DC?
Joe Salavae may be a great hire to land the poly guys.
Jeff Tedford may be open to coming back to the Pac12 but I’m not sure about him.

No to Kiffin, Sark, J Smith, Rocky Long, Mendenhall, Hoke, Matt Wells, Riley, Banker, Langsdorf, Locey, Briles, Dan Hawkins, Norvell

    • Agree with the no list, except I’d probably be open to Briles. He’s Leach 2.0…tarnished, etc, and can be had on the cheap. Since college sports have no morality anyway, I’m not opposed to us joining the scumbags. Being a clean program has gotten us nowhere.

      • I have Briles 4th on my wish list. Think he would win, is ready for a 2nd chance and can be gotten at a reasonable price. There are reasons to believe it could potentially work for Briles at OSU.

Have him just ahead of Hall if he gets 2-3 wins to close the season and Smith.

          • I meant it about Leach because he was questionable on player safety (and is now more so).

I mean it about Briles because he certainly doesn’t give two fucks about anyone or anything. I’m starting to think you are just not aware of what happened at Baylor.

Is this the case? You just kinda heard it was bad, but you never looked into what actually happened?

          • I’d say that’s accurate. I don’t have the time or desire to follow Baylor. At the time I remember thinking it was atrocious, and they’d get the death penalty, but I forget a lot of the details.

My comment was out of frustration. We take the high road with these hires, and all we do is finish last from that approach.

      • I don’t understand how you’d be open to Briles. We railed on Riley for the Brenda Tracy, sweep rape under the rug handling. Art Briles is on a completely different level when it comes to rape cover ups.
There is zero chance Ed Ray would or should take a flier on Briles. Our school would get crucified.

        • In theory I’m not open to him, but I’m so sick of losing/not cheating while other programs win/cheat, that I find him tempting. That’s all.

          • At 9:57 you said you’d probably be open to Briles. Then at 10:21 you say “in theory” you’re not open to him…. no wonder you’re always right in your own head

          • It’s really simple A@A, “probably” and “in theory” are kinda synonyms. In both posts I follow that up by saying running a clean program hasn’t gotten us anywhere/expressing frustration. Nice try, bozo. You came out from under your rock for that?

          • Just shows how warped you are. I mean in theory I think the Cubs will win the World Series, but Im probably be open to the idea that the Astros will win.

    • Gene Chizik flamed out hard at Iowa State all while complaining about how they didn’t have the same kind of money UT has. I don’t think he would be too interested in coming here.

  89. Beau Baldwin is a good plan if a sell out Reser in 3 weeka option like Chip Kelly didn’t happen. Les Mes would fill Reser pretty well as well. Baldwin just is at an ideal point to become a P5 head coach and Oregon State seems like it would fit him well. Getting him for 2.4 or 2.5 million and maybe Alex Grinch as DC and Asst Head Coach for a pay raise, say 1.55 million would be a killer combo.

Chip would maybe cost the most but would be worth it. Impact would lilely be Erickson like as it would be a 8.0 earthquake in this state and that would be good for Oregon State reinventing itself.

Smith is a bit intetesting but fairly risky and it would be kind of a bummer to see a legend from Erickaon’s heights at OSU not be able to have the success we want.

I think Cory Hall has a good persoanlity yo be interim. Has some Gary Payton lile qualities in him. Would lile him to temain on staff. He needs to seize the bull by the horns and get 2-3 wins to get real consideration.

    Right now I would take,

    1. CHIP
    2. BEAU
    3. LES

Besides Chip, Beau with Grinch would be a big coup.

      • I was thinking a 4 year, 10 million dollar deal.

Can’t go too cheap. Do think the Smith brakes need to be pumped some. Great guy but OSU fans want to win, not feel good stories. He is riskier than some others but brings a couple good aspects. Still whoever is likely to have best chance to get program to 7-8 wins within 3 years needs to be paramount. Selling tickets also big but fans going to come and stay for a winning culture and a renegade spirit to the head coach and program. Leach/Erickson 2.0 isn’t a bad model for this next hire.

          • You know no head coach in the Pac-12 will start less than 1.95 million in 2018. He probably makes 800K+ now at Cal as OC.

If we can get him at an OK rate for 4 years with enough room for Alex Grinch to get a 400K+ raise and come here, then more power to Barnes.

Chip would cost atleast 12 million over 4 years to consider us. Les maybe you can get for 11.35 million over 4 years. Beau going to cost a minimum of 8.75 million over 4 years. That’s the market.

            Year 1: 2.0 million
            Year 2: 2.125 million
            Year 3: 2.25 million
            Year 4: 2.375 million

        • Yeah 1.25 is too high. I was being generous and giving him the “hot commodity” bump since Cal is doing a little better than they should. Not sure he’s a hot commodity, but let’s say he’s warm.

He’s making 570k as the Cal OC. That’s pretty high, but after cost of living adjustment 1 mil might get him.

          • Maybe my numbers are a tad high but don’t think by that much. Would be more room to bring on Grinch as DC and Asst. Head Coach. Baldwin isn’t that hot right now so that works in beavs favor if he nakes the final few receiving strong looks. Their offense production has not been great but I do think he has an understanding of what he wants to do. He would benefit from a couple of strong recruiters on staff like Cory Hall if he stays. Cal has lost there last few games. Would be a big opportunity for him and he shouldn’t be that hot at the end of what still appears will be a 6-6 or 5-7 season for Cal.

If you could get him to for 7.4 million over 4 years that leaves 5.2 million of the 12.6 million Andersen left on his refund for a quality DC like Grinch. Has to be some kinda sweet package like this the Beavs could offer if Chip or Les type hires don’t get done.

      • LMFAO! 2.5 million for Beau Breedlove? Seriously?? GA’s initial contract was 2.7 mil per year. Anyone that thinks he’s worth 2.5 million a year needs to put down the crack pipe.

I agree with Angry on this one. 1.25 million might even be a stretch

  90. My list…

    I want:
    You know who I want

    Intriguing:
    Sumlin

    Intriguing, but pays for players:
    the Chipster

I’m afraid we’ll end up with:
    Smith or Calhoun

No way in hell because they won’t, so stop naming them:
    Niumatalolo, Miles

No way in hell for the bad reasons, so stop naming them:
    Riley, Banker, Briles, Leavitt

    Pac coordinators we might consider:
    Bloomgren

    A name nobody knows:
    Neal Brown

Who I’d like to just talk to for a while:
    Moglia

    Just to fuck with angry:
    Rex Ryan

  91. Off topic but the Dodgers sweep the D-Bags. On to the NLCS bitches! THIS time with homefield advantage.

(disclaimer: the Beavs suck. Please let me have my moment)

    Go Blue!

  92. So if Wilcox makes 1.6 million a year at Cal in expensive San Fran area then 1.4 million really should be close to reasonable for Beau Baldwin. 1.4 x 4 years = 5.6 million. That leavs 7 million of GA returned funds for whatever. Enough easily with good management by Barnes to tell Beau we are going after Grinch for DC. Then use remaining money for a couple of strong recruiters including Coach Hall who remains on staff in charge of secondary and possibly as Asst Head Coach. Maybe even fund a full time recruiting coordinator position.

  93. If Hall proves decent as interim HC, another option is keep him as a cheap HC and spend some of the excess of getting who you want at OC or DC. If Baldwin makes 560K or whatever at Cal does 800K in CorVegas as OC where $ goes further bring him here? Personality wise Hall may work better as the HC and you get max Beau benefits perhaps with him as your OC. Same may be true for Jonathan Smith and that ends up being much less risky if Smith is OC but we give him a bump to return to Oregon State with maybe Asst Head Coach title. Still money left to attract Grinch as DC. Hall you could maybe get as HC for 1.3 million a year x 4 years = 5.2 million which gives 7.4 million GA refund dollars to get exactly the OC and DC you want.

Watch closely how Hall’s personality fits the image for a new Oregon State in coming weeks. Parts of him seem to portray what we need right now. Bad losses won’t help but then if you aren’t sure about these cheaper options then put a best effort for a Chip Kelly or Les Miles.

    • No, never keep the interim guy. That is a recipe for failure.

Hall being kept on staff could make sense but I would be upset if they made him HC even if he manages to win a few games.

  94. Want Les Miles. He is Erickson 2.0 at the right time. Has renegade spirit that matches Leach. Would take Kelly but Les feels right and he actually said Oregon State intetested him on ESPN before I believe. He carries some premium but not too much right now and it would feel alot like when Erickson arrived in 1999. That is the feeling Oregon State fans are looking for and importantly he will sell tickets. Ray didn’t like that Reser crowds were thinning too quick as GA regrssed. He wants it as full as possible. Miles can do that and restore enthusiasm and excitement to Beaver Football. Culture change which is what is needed.

  95. Count me in for Les Miles. Football is entertainment. Got to sell tickets to take program to the next level. Personality sells. I’d get season tickets for Les and if OSU is serious about its football then it should be someone that will get people excited to fill the stadium and brings Oregon State momentum right away.

  96. Youngest son is at WSU – he says that Grinch is being looked at pretty hard by OSU. Now I like this guy and the way his defense plays; he must be able to evaluate the talent and coach up the players he gets but we can’t get into the same position we were in with GA – who is probably a pretty decent coordinator, just not a HC. I hope the coaching search is a little more methodical than last time, we certainly have the time to do it.

  97. Les Miles’ career thus far in football:

    1980-1981: Michigan(GA)
    1982-1986: Colorado(OL)
    1987-1994: Michigan(OL)
    1995-1997: Ok State(OC)
    1998-2000: Dallas Cowboys(TE)
    2001-2004: Ok State(HC)
    2005-2016: LSU(HC)

It’s intriguing that Mike Gundy, Jimbo Fisher, and Bo Pelini are all apart of Les Miles’ coaching tree that went on to be head coaches.

  98. Here’s a scary thought… If Luton retires (possible) and Petras decommits (probable), the QB depth chart next year iwill be made up of Blount, Willard and Dukart.

        • If it ends up being Beau Baldwin, there’s a nice candidate for grad transfer at QB up at Eastern Washington. A local kid who has been runner up for fcs player of the year. Think he’s from McMinville or somewhere around there

    • I think the truth is somewhere in the write ups by Eggers and Canzano. Andersen was frustrated with his coaches, tired of fighting the culture of Oregon State – do more with less, and he was aware of the frustrations of the fans. Enough was enough for him.

      • So, he was not able to fire his staff? I can see where perhaps he could have wanted to but his hand was forced. That seems a bit of a stretch because Barnes is GA’s guy. It’s weird that the coordinators were bypassed for the interim HC position. That is as strong of a no-confidence vote that I can imagine, save a dismissal.

        Still stinks.

        • One of the big stories when GA first arrived was that he secured more pay and 2-year contracts for his assistants.

One of the rumors that came out recently was something about GA being upset at not getting $1M for “a new weight room.”

Read between the lines and $1M is roughly how much it would cost to buyout 1.5 years of a PAC 12 OC or DC’s contract.

There might be something to that idea…

      • I don’t really buy the “more with less” theory. Beaver football has been what I would call acceptably competitive for the past two decades and Andersen really had them there last season. I think they had some strong, tough senior leadership and there was no one ready to step up and replace them this year. When you look at the comparative stats between this season and last season it’s pretty alarming. I guess in the end, it still falls back on coaching.

      • September 25th, 2017.

“I’m more driven for this place than I ever have been,” he says. “I understand with the successes we’re having or not having, people need to be held accountable. That’s on us. But I’m going to continue to fight my ass off. That’s never going to stop. I’m going to keep on swinging, and make sure it’s done the right way.”

I’m going to fight my ass off…for two and a half weeks.

I don’t think Andersen is that kind of quitter but maybe he is?

        • Mutually deciding to leave is ambiguous at best.

On the one hand, he quit.

On the other hand, he was fired.

I guess it depends on who you mutually talk to?

          • Was this really mutual or was it Barnes realizing that Gary was done and wasn’t going to change his mind? I have a hard time buying that Barnes wanted the reset of the football program that he said in the press conference. It was also odd at one point how he reiterated it was mutual. It was like he was trying to either save face after being dumped or saying it for contractual purposes to ensure GA would be paid through year end with no buyout for either party.

          • It’s just ambiguous.

I don’t know if we’ll ever know the truth. We’re still making up narratives about why he left Wiscy. So I don’t expect to ever find out.

            Bottom line, he’s gone.

            Next.

  99. Eggers captures it in one sentence pretty well: “A defensive coach by nature, he gave the offensive coaches autonomy — to a fault.”

  100. “Hall will preside over the Oregon State program for the final six games of the season. Meanwhile, Barnes will begin to identify candidates for replacements. He will hire a search firm to help with that. Names such as Washington offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith, California offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin and Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo have already surfaced as potential candidates. “Ultimately,” Barnes said, “the decision will be made by Ed Ray and myself.” “

    • Niumatalolo’s upside probably mirrors Johnson’s history in the ACC. Play mediocre football for a period then pop up and play a BCS Bowl game every five or so years.

It would be a damn sight better than Riley. But I wouldn’t expect any more.

I also don’t know if I can watch the Beavs play an option without suffering PTSS.

Luck o’ da Beavs: The years he would have us go to BCS games, we would end up not going to the Rose Bowl for whatever reason. That’s all I really want.

        • I just want the Rose Bowl. Unless we get a playoff with 8 or more teams, can I just get a RB appearance?

Our luck would be the notch above mediocre BCS appearance in 2020. So we would lose a hard fought Pac CG but be good enough for a BCS level bowl. Then we would win the CCG the next year and be sent to the Cotton Bowl or something. Then we would suffer for another five years until we repeated that luck.

          • It would be sort of like not going to the RB because the Pac rule that the team who had the longest drought would win a tie-break for that appearance was done away with and replaced with the arbitrary ranking tie-break… just prior to our being considered in any kind of tie-break.

  101. Does Coach Cristobal from Oregon do anything for anybody?
Several of you have mentioned making the OL a priority. He would certainly help there, while also weakening a rival

      • Just spitballing. I dont think you get him to leave his current job unless it’s for a HC position. That’s his career track and the reason he even left Alabama was to work his way up to a head job.

  102. I am 100% against Riley returning as head coach but just throwing this out there to be lambasted by the rest of you:

    Head Coach: Jonathan Smith
DC: Keith Heyward (their OSU playing careers overlapped for 3 seasons)
    OC/mentor: Mike Riley
QB coach: Mike Johnson (QB coach for Riley, Smith)

We flip Johnson’s kid to OSU, Heyward flips Hufanga to OSU, dynasty begins …

      • I actually would see Riley in that role. Didn’t someone say that Riley and his wife Dee still have a house in Corvallis? I actually like the idea of this:

        HC/QB: Jonathan Smith
        OC: Dennis Erickson
DC: Trent Bray or Keith Heyward

These are all OSU guys, all know how to recruit, Jonathan Smith ran Erickson’s offense and that would be the most cohesive group I could think of that would know how to get JC guys, has a history of winning, and would allow us to compete in the Pac-12 with current Pac-12 coaches.

    • No Riley, in any role.

I wouldn’t even want Erickson back other than as an occasional offensive consultant/peer review kind of role. And that role should be rotated amongst other external coaches with diverse experiences and backgrounds.

    • How would you convince Johnson to make a lateral move? I think you’d have to give him the OC job. Which I’d be open to doing. What is his kids name?

Riley could be QB coach/mentor under this scenario (although I’d prefer Erickson in such a role) but this is about the only role I’d accept Riley returning to Corvallis for. He can coach QBs.

      • He was actively pursuing the MN job last year.
AD kept him in the back pocket as the back up to the backup plan. Legend is that he was on a plane to Mpls.when they announced the Fleck hire. I loved Miles as a coach and a character, but they made the right decision to pass. See my Tubby Smith comment above. Les has been through the meat grinder. Need a young guy that is hungry.

  103. Memorial Service at 1:00 Saturday, October 7th, Crystal Lake Cemetery, Corvallis, OR

Join family and friends on Saturday for unveiling of the Gary Andersen Memorial Headstone in the Head Football Coaches Area of Crystal Lake Cemetery in Corvallis, Oregon

Gary Andersen 2015-2017.5 Joins other notable coaches such as Craig Fertig, Joe Avezzano, Dave Kragthorpe and Jerry Pettibone whose once promising careers died in Corvallis while coaching the “rumored” football program at Oregon State University.

In lieu of gifts please consider a donation to the BASF. Mr. Andersen’s unexpected demise reportedly came as the result of an uncompleted weight room. Your contribution will make sure this never happens to another coach.

Seating is limited to 500, or about the average attendance at the last few home games,

  104. What characteristics would we need at Oregon State. We should look at what makes Scott Rueck, Pat Casey, I will say Wayne Tinkle because he can recruit, Tanya Chaplin(Gymnastics), and Jim Zalesky(Wrestling).

Pat Casey is a coach that is more of the Riley personality that actually cares about his players in the offseason, but has control of the X’s and O’s of the game.

Scott Rueck teaches fundamentals, energy, and can recruit.

Wayne Tinkle can recruit, but hasn’t really proved himself yet in regards to the win column, but he seems to have the ability to manage the game and the flow. This is a wait and see.

Tanya Chaplin appears to be able to put together top 25 teams each year and knows how to compete in the Pac-12. Knowing how to compete in the Pac-12 is the biggest area of emphasis for recruiting, coaching, and preparation for games/matches.

Jim Zalesky also appears to have top 25 teams more often than not. It’s just not talked about as much on here. Recognizing talent, knowing what each wrestler’s ideal weight is for their body type and ideal athletic weight to be able to compete in each of their matches would also go a long ways in who the next hire will be for the Beavs.

All in all, a coach that knows how to win in the Pac-12, Recruiting abilities that allow them to get the guys to say yes to them and the school, and being able to evaluate the talent they have, and the true needs they need to get immediately. AKA Would the next coach, if a current coach, be able to flip a recruit they are recruiting to Oregon State?

Andersen did not even try or even want to try to do this when he came to Oregon State. I’m all for a coach that can poach from their current team because that shows the players want to play for the coach that recruited them even if it isn’t an immediate need for the team.

    • Pat Casey is a coach that is more of the Riley personality that actually cares about his players in the offseason, but has control of the X’s and O’s of the game.

      Huh?

Wayne Tinkle can recruit, but hasn’t really proved himself yet in regards to the win column….

      No dance?

What are you even talking about with GA not doing any of that? What are the arrests and GPAs telling you about this staff versus the last?

      That was a weird screed.

    • Pat Casey is NOT AT ALL like Riley in terms of personality, “x’s & o’s” (or their baseball equivalent), ability to articulate a program philosophy, or as a recruiter. Unlike Riley, Pat demands the best of his players, plays the best players, recruits the best players in Oregon and Washington and holds his own further south. And he wins conference titles and national championships.

      • I should have said Demeanor(With Media and with players). He’s calm, cool and collective, but gets upset when he needs to be upset. This occurred more in Riley’s first stint at Oregon State rather than his second stint.

In regards to what you say about Pat Casey vs. Riley is true, he does demand more, but at the same time, holds them accountable.

        • You’re so far off on the comparisons that you shouldn’t even try to compare them in the first place. Casey checks a lot of “pro” boxes. Smiley checks a lot of “cons” boxes.

And never the twain shall meet.

  105. I’m following the coach prospecting discussion avidly. I don’t happen to hold any favorites but I would suggest this: with Andersen’s in-kind gift of $12 million OSU can afford to pay, say, someone like Chip Kelly $4 million a year for three years. That’s an SEC-level compensation package. (Just while I’m at it though, Chip would fill the stadium immediately, infuriate the folks in Eugene, and shake-up the football world just like Erickson coming to Corvallis did.)

  106. Regarding the concern some have with Hall’s (and maybe his wife’s) feelings about Corvallis, Eggers quotes him,
“I love Corvallis,” he said, chuckling. “People ask me that question, and I say, ‘Well, I’m from Bakersfield. I’m not going to love it here?’ I love what the people are about here. It’s a college town. I like the small college town feel. It’s a great place to raise a family. It’s one of the safest cities in America, right? …I don’t have one bad thing to say about the state of Oregon.”

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/374839-259924-halls-life-led-to-this-mo

In another Eggers piece a reader asks him to keep digging, my money is on Eggers (over anyone at the zero), to get more on the background story of GA’s decision.

  107. interview with Coach Hall on 620 am radio this morning in portland.
Nigel Burton did a good job of keeping the conversation going and prodding Hall for answers about how yesterday played out. Hall (understandably) sounds a little overwhelmed, in my opinion. He doesn’t have a clear plan in mind quite yet, but wouldn’t expect him to know exactly how to run a team given that he’s had control for approximately 24 hours. Anyway, it’s worth a listen….
He also mentions that the coordinators are still the coordinators at this time, but then sortof reiterates the “at this time” line, as if he knows he plans to make changes, but he’s not going to reveal his plan on the air in a radio interview just yet. Fortunately for Hall, he has a bye week after Colorado, which should help give him some time to regroup the team for the remainder of the season.

  108. Here you go bastages…..
Whisky OC/OL coach, Asst. HC Joe Rudolph……. GA was not WI, so don’t get your panties in twist.

Paul Chryst protege, so has the MR tie in to appease the gray hair Riley crowd.
Could bring this Beaver great back as DC. Current Badger DL coach.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inoke_Breckterfield,,

As much as despise the Badgers as rivals, I respect the hell out of what Barry A has built and maintained there. There is no better recipe to follow in CFB. They have maintained a very good team through multiple HC and countless coordinator changes.
They have similar issues with recruiting but have implemented a system that maximizes what they can get in state. Similar system has worked at Stanford, why not in Corvallis?
Rudolph has been a good recruiter and is supposed to be a very bright guy. 45 yo, so the right age.

  109. Not expecting much change in the play or outcome this week. Hall doesn’t have much time to reinvent the wheel in a short time. Next week before stanford, he’ll probably shake things up.

Feel like the players will have some more energy this week. Not saying they didn’t like Andersen, he really was to some the only one to offer them a scholarship. And they all knew a change was the best for all involved.

    • Outcome this week? I had this one as a close W before the news. Figured, as long as the players continued to put forth effort, the step down in competition compared to the last three games would be the difference.

Agree 100% about any serious shake up coming after this weeks game.

  110. I think Hall is it until the end of the season and I think it is Hall’s audition time. Time to shine Hall. Go rid us of McGiven and get this team on track. I personally thin Hall will be a great HC one day. Maybe he can make it happen way faster then anyone could have expected.

  111. I wonder if Hall was picked because of his ability to manage the staff situation (prevent staff infighting) or staff egos or turf wars more than for his football coaching skills?

I think he needs to articulate what he is going to do differently even if minor tweeks? What is the point of change otherwise?

    • Particularly I think he should say something about special teams which were bad against usc. Two missed field goals and a running into punter if I remember correctly….

  112. gotta check out Canzano’s latest. He has printed GA’s text messages to him. real inside stuff; just the kind of dirt that Canzano revels in

  113. Why assume that GA didn’t give him the green light to use his texts for this column?

Edit: Canzano said he cleared the article with GA before publishing it.

    • I expect anyone to believe any correspondence of any kind to become public when sent to a reporter. But dolphin boy trades in hearsay as much as he does truth. With that would come some off the record stuff. If he got permission, fine. If he didn’t but just informed GA that it was dumb to trust a reporter with text messages, then why would anyone ever trust him?

I’d have to believe he did get permission since his morality is built on optics, if nothing else.

      • Dolphin boy….funny stuff. I wonder if his radio program ever cut ties with dolphin II? Article a week ago or so where court ordered $1M judgement to the girl that was forced into prostitution and danced at several clubs including dolphin II…J c hates it when women are exploited but apparently not so much when it involves a paying sponsor to his radio show…and she was 13 at the time…..if he’s so disgusted by exploitation, maybe he should donate part of his salary paid by dolphin II sponsorship.

    • Cleared meaning he told ga he was going to publish the texts. Didn’t say that ga approved the use. And since ga texted canzano it’s not private info or defamation.

Also why is ga yelling in every text?

    • Canzano said he cleared the article with GA before publishing it.

      Then obviously it’s totally fine.
GA probably wanted to throw them under the bus so nobody hires them. He’s probably frustrated with them, and from the sound of things doesn’t sound in any rush to coach again.

He should become an analyst or D consultant. Something more low key.

At least he recognized he hired the wrong guys. Wonder if he ever recognized he picked the wrong QB, too.

      • > Wonder if he ever recognized he picked the wrong QB, too.

Why do you keep assuming Andersen picked the QB? He’s said (and shown) over and over and over again he’s not involved in the offense.

  114. Can anyone tell me what the current situation is regarding the debt of the athletic department?

Before the TV contract there was red ink all over the place and there was some concern about the financial viability of the athletic department.

Has there been much improvement, if any, in the situation?

When I see mention of having to delay (or suspend) building improvements (weight room?) I can’t help but wonder if the red ink that was already there is the cause for the delay.

  115. “I hired the wrong (expletive) guys”

I remember thinking that when he brought in some guy from Kansas to be passing game coordinator.

    • Phillips is well regarded, and his players showed objective improvements always. I would say our WRs are doing pretty well this year save Villy v UW and Bradford once a game early. I wish he would coach the TEs too.

I think he’s perturbed because he’s stuck with the Utah crew, not who he wanted.

      • That all could have easily come straight off my phone. I was pretty sure I liked GA before. Now I’m positive. Dude is fuckin hard as nails. Seems like after he “read the staff the riot act” they started fighting with each other and bickering rather than fix their shit.

  116. Anyone else concerned that the final coaching decision will come down to a decision by Ed Ray and Barnes only? What happened to the panel interview process and decisioning?

    • Ed Ray will declare the athletic dept. a sanctuary dept and we will hire an illegal alien coach who can’t leave the campus to recruit for fear of deportation. Luck O da Beavs.

  117. That Canzano article is a wild read.. I can’t believe GA gave him permission to publish those text messages..

GA is an interest dude.. I’m not sure what to think of the guy.. He is all over the place.. and I’m not sure how GA benefits from sending such texts to Canzano.. What was GA’s angle for doing so? How would sending Canzano those texts benefit what he was trying to accomplish? Control the narrative somehow from the Oregonian?! Seems like a real poor way of achieving that..

This is more puzzling today than yesterday.. Why give up the money? or why give it all up? Why quit mid-season? Why not see this season out and decide at the end? Was he given some sort of ultimatum from the AD and just decided to kick the can? I mean the USC game was the final straw?? I find that hard to believe..

    • Some of those texts too are conversational in nature, as if they were a reply.. I doubt GA just randomly cold texts Canzano because he loves bald guys.. Canzano should have posted his corresponding texts as well to provide context.

    • The one question I would love GA to answer.. Why did he allow (admittedly) lousy offensive coaches to do a complete 180 from what was working at the end of last season.. Like you found something, you found an identity of how to play on offense that was working, you won the civil war, and then you allowed those numbskull coaches to complete reverse course before the following year?!?!?

That makes ZERO sense to me.. I don’t even get how it’s possible.

  118. Dude needed to head to the confessional booth at church rather than venting to Canzano. He may be hard nosed, but he also comes off as loony tunes.
I mean, who vents to a columnist when times are tough? Terrible idea. If he thinks that was a good decision, then he wasn’t fit for the job.

  119. GA never talks about big boy pants in the texts????

Do you blame your assistants with your big boy pants on?

I am tearing up my contract and going back to the land of latter day saints….

      • It was redacted from John’s original column.

“John, if I can’t get this team to start winning, I’ll take off my (expletive) big boy pants!!!!………wait, that didn’t come out right. I don’t give you permission to print that one”

  120. Texting Canzano in frustration like that is poor judgement and strikes me as professionally immature. Reading through those he almost sound bi-polar or at the least melodramatic.

He hired the wrong guys; manage them, reassign them, do something besides be distant and say you don’t know what’s going on with the offense or players. If he kept threatening their (expletive) and nothing changed, did he really expect them to either fear or respect him?

He looks less principled now, even after walking away from the $$$.

    • I totally agree with the above.. He strikes me as someone suffering from a mental disorder to some degree. I mean sending Canzano texts like that is such a monstrously bad idea.. There’s no positive to doing so.. Shocking level of unawareness

      • It’s not like he didn’t have an inkling that maybe Canzano wasn’t the right person to vent to. Did the Heimlich situation not teach him anything? Of course you’re just giving the reporter material for a future column. HE’S NOT YOUR (EXPLETIVE) BUDDY!!!!

        • Right. Who sends texts like that and thinks “This ought to end well.”

Maybe just stress, but Andersen sounds unbalanced. And this isn’t his first time walking away and “shocking” people.

I seriously wonder if he has at least a low to mid-grade bi-polar disorder.

          • Speak to what the recipient thought was newsworthy as well. What if the first was reported in a timely manner, and this could have ended differently with GA getting rightly dinged for sending something like that?

  121. You have to wonder if Hall knew this article was going to hit when he was smirking about the coordinator questions during the presser.

Now, having been publicly butt fucked by their former boss do any of the coordinators quit this week?

      • Or they bust their asses to win as many games the rest of the season, to prove to the world that they weren’t the problem, and their leader actually was. That’s their best chance at career damage control they have

        • Hahahahaha.

          Ahhhhhhh….

          Good one.

It’s time for DG to pull out the bottle cap, the piece of glass and the pebble and start calling some plays.

  122. Also, as far as GA venting to Canzano we as readers/fans have no idea what kind of relationship they have, or if this kind of thing is common between media and coaches. That said, I do agree that it shows strange judgement at face value.

    • It’s just not right.

If he sees a shrink, and he showed that doc these, along with his obvious physical degeneration, maybe he deferred to the medical person about advice given.

  123. I just don’t get why he just didn’t fire some people and reload… all the hate of late towards him would have been pulled back.

  124. Oh well.

We have some good names listed so far. Anyone have any others? This is what I’ve seen, without trying to gauge interest in OSU or percentages that anything is possible.

P5 proven but will be unemployed: Chipster, Sumlin, Miles
    G5 proven: Niumatalolo, Calhoun
G5 up and coming: Brown, Leipold (my bias)
Coordinators: Bloomguy, Lake, Venables, Rudolph, Martin (?UGA)
Out of left field: I still think Rex Ryan would be hilarious as a college head coach. Then again… Glanville was hilarious.

      • Has been for years.

I thought he would make a great OC first, but he went to prove his mettle at a tough place. And it looks like he has that ship pointing in the right direction.

His track at Buffalo is what I expected from GA here. We just chose the wrong tall dude from Wisconsin.

I would have been good with Fleck too. I love his energy, even if I would probably get a headache from too much of him at once.

    • The next question is: which is those guys have experience turning around a program? It’s one thing to take over a successful program and maintain. It’s another entirely to build something new.

      • Heh heh… Leipold.

Three years ago, Jeff Quinn was fired mid-season… a year after his only winning season (out of 4.5) at Buffalo. Interim finishes the season.

2015 – Leipold leaves D3 for Buffalo and finishes 5-7 with the holdovers

I think White fired Quinn because Quinn blew his wad in year 4 and may have been shopping his success. All the talent was draining with poor recruiting to reload… not that AD Danny White knows how to evaluate talent.

2016 – After natural and coaching change attrition, a 2 win season and some grumbly fans.

Amazingly, fan expectation at the end of last year was at least 4 wins this year to keep his job after 2017. I guess the well was empty.

2017 – 3-3 thus far with losses @MINN (7-17), @Army (17-21) and WMU (68-71/7OT). It looks like they’re going to make a run at the MAC East title. They’re only a couple bounces of the ball away from being 5-1.

          • Why are you still talking about MM?

He’s gone. He is inconsequential to what happens at OSU, and he has been since he left.

If you want to talk about how angry and the herd suggested heavily that he ran away because he had an entitlement issue… just don’t. I don’t know why you all have to continue to bring this up.

If it isn’t apparent right now, then you’re thicker than I thought.

The difference between one 5/10 QB and another 5/10 QB was OBVIOUSLY not the issue.

There are almost 800 posts right here^^^ proving it.

And there are hundreds of posts from the herd talking about how it’s a slap in the face to MM, and he was justified to run away. Deal with it. It isn’t my narrative. Stop trying to peg me with it, or I’ll blame you for someone else’s stupidity and see how you like it.

          • I think your persistence in blaming me for angry’s narrative is because you’re too uncomfortable admitting that you were just wrong about it from the beginning. Now that you realize that you all said bad things about MM’s character when you really didn’t need to make up anything, you probably feel pretty shitty.

            And you should.

Your god sucks my sweaty balls, liar.

          • I take your silence to be affirmation that you hypothesized that he felt he was entitled, and when his feeling of entitlement was not satisfied, he made a life decision based on nothing but that emotion.

That is an immature response that you hypothesized.

You then double down on it by suggesting there is a schism because of it, which can only happen if MM poisons the well and continues to do so. Never mind there were zero reports substantiating your claims that MM was making immature life decisions. You were going to say it anyway.

So why not just call a spade a spade? If you’re going to claim that an emotionally immature person who poisons the well is good for the well, why not call him any number of things that fit those parameters?

Your hypothesis was shit because you left open the possibility that everything I said in mimicry was absolutely the truth according to your hypothesis.

It’s your narrative, yet you don’t have the stones to own it.

        • I’m going to go with this after limited research: he left before he could realize the full potential of the solid foundations he left for his successors.

          • Oh great. You’re going to make him do it again.

And then two years from now, HireMattWells will be calling for us to fire him and to hire his successor at Wake.

  125. You guys can find meaning in anything. Maybe the reason GA adds exclamation marks to everything is that he’s a grandpa and doesn’t use text the way younger people do. I can’t tell you how many emails and texts with strange formatting I’ve gotten from people of his generation.

  126. For those of you who were getting blocked by the anti-spam software and thought I banned you, you should be good now. Sorry about that. Missed the requests.

  127. Nemec out with a kind of weak pile on piece talking about lack of organization in OSU recruiting under GA.

Just confirms the story that GA is not a good manager.

  128. After reading his texts, I can confidently say GA has more AB cared than anyone of his. “I hired the wrong ****ing guys!” makes him the consummate Angry Beav.

Can someone figure out how to invite him to the site? If he’ll let JC print those texts, surely he would give Angry an interview. Bridges have already been burned.

    • Yes, he does. But, he also sounds a little like Pat Casey when he says,
“the goal is to have fun playing the game that we played as children and now we’re grown up, we’re young adults, being able to play a kids’ game. It has its serious points but it’s fun at the end of the day.”

I liked his comment about practicing without music (for the first time in a few years, according to the GT).

Hall said he wanted the players to focus on the details of their assignments.

“(And) let them hear themselves think,” Hall said. “It was a player-choice type deal. They wanted to make sure they understood the game plan, they wanted to make sure it was clearly instructed into them so that they could really focus in on their assignments.”

  129. My take on coaches: no Riley,no Jonathan Smith. I do not want a neat deal hire for a coach period! I like Les Miles and think he would fit in. If we can’t have him then I like a young up coming coach. Like the one who runs the veer and shoot offense mentioned somewhere in this thread. That’s what my coach ran in high school & I loved it then and would love it now. No other pac 12 team runs it so it should give defenses fits.

    • Smith isn’t in my Top 3 but I think I prefer him over the Navy coach.

MILES, then Kelly then Beau. (Miles seems gettable as Erickson was. Think it would be worth it and good for the program to get him. Kelly is mostly a pipe dream but would be a definite yes from me and make OSU highly relevant. Les Miles does that nearly as much though and he could be lured.
Beau a giod solid hire with limited downside as would give it his best to succeed. Smith after these guys is close to where I am at though. Closer to 5th on my list. Don’t care about the feel good part as much as I do think he is smart. He might well be availble in 6 years and brings a little more risk now when we could go for someone like Les who will probably come close to filling Reser and make the Beavs a compelling program right away. Too small a name and Oregon State tends to get too localized to Corvallis. For the Beavs to take the leap they must challenge for and become the best of the North division. Takes gumption and wanting to garner attention on a much bigger stage.

  130. I’m not impressed with Hall yet. Not seeing this energy he talks about and others see. I see a guy in over his head who looks scared. His enthusiasm seems normal to me.

Beavs might win a few games because they’re pissed and want to take out that anger. Or they might continue down the path they’re on. Coin flip.

Hall leaving McGiven et al is weak.

    • Seems to me like Hall made it to the corner office and realized just how scary change can be.

It’s still worth remembering that people can say and do different things. He may not have the same story on Sunday if the Colorado game is just more of the same.

I did like his answer about the offense “we’re going to focus on the good things we do [running the ball] and build on that.”

    • There’s no question he’s in over his head, especially having to manage a staff that already has dissension. Not the kind of shit storm anyone wants to be tossed into. I’ll wait to see what changes he makes during the bye week.

  131. Kevin Mouton did not win any games either, nothing to see on the field for the remainder of the season, the news will be in who the administration hires.

  132. If Hall is going to make changes it makes sense to make them during the bye week. It’s way too hard to make any changes in 5 days when you’re preparing for a game.

  133. The HC from Navy is intriguing. Runs an offense that nobody else runs in the conference so it would be more difficult to prepare for. Also could help provide niche in recruiting. Can’t argue with his results either. Appears he would check many of the boxes needed to succeed.

    • I could get behind the navy HC. At navy he’s had to recruit coast to coast with high academic demands but he’d have to ditch his offense.

I think it’s a pretty low chance that he’d leave Navy for a rebuilding project. He’s been there for a long time.

      • He makes a surprisingly nice 1.6 million a year at Navy. He turned down his supposed dream job at BYU. Why in the hell would in come to the P-12 to get his ass kicked when he can continue to dominant the AAC?
