  1. In positive news, the point spread for Oregon State/ Colorado has actually moved in Oregon State’s favor since the Andersen news dropped. Things are looking up!

  2. Mixed feelings about the Andersen Texts, but it sure is fascinating to get a picture of what the coach really thought. What I don’t understand is why die with the assistants? He goes, they go soon after, anyway. Our ex-coach is certainly an odd one.

  3. Holy shiit!! I am out of touch for a few days and ….. GA has QUIT!?!

Man, he sure isnt a Riley, milking indifferent coaching for all the $$$ he can. As to the health thing, it has been noticable for some time how cadaverous he has been looking.

But I wonder, not knowing details, if he walked away, does that mean he might do an about face and be back? You know, reconsider? Or did he formally resign?

Next coach? Someone really short … dwarf or miget …? We’d be a lock on the national football reporting…

  4. How did Erickson come in and have quick success? Is there a blueprint for that that can be discussed?
Maybe Riley laying a foundation just like Andersen has that will lead to a similar rebound…Kenny leading to Jackson, yvenson, quizz to nall. Damn there’s a ton more backs. Hass, straughter, tj, chad, cooks. Damn there’s too many receivers to recall. But it gets down to what angry keeps pointing out. The QB.
    Go BEAVS

  5. Do the coordinators/assistants need to be bought out of their contracts? Gary said he hired “the wrong [expletive] people!” By leaving $12M on the table, doesn’t he make it easier on OSU to buy out the coordinators he hired?

    • Don’t know the contract terms, but typically the support staff aren’t on as long of deals as the head coach. Could be that all or most of their deals are up at the end of the year anyway. At that point, the new coach would have to decide who would be kept as part of the new staff (and of course they would need to be interested in staying)
Might be worth looking back at when Clune was hired to see if contract terms were made public. Might help us get an idea of what is typical.

        • I think Riley got some for his staff too. It’s likely most schools sign key assistants to two year deals, coach in waiting for some others (which I think is a bad idea). While the coach has the ability to hire and fire, the AD has the ability to dictate who gets paid what amount. When the two can’t meet, that’s essentially a vote of no confidence.

So a coach just starting out wants to guarantee continuity by having the school show loyalty. It’s a risk you take, and sometimes it blows up in your face.

Were I him (knowing what we now know), I would have blown the staff up. The Utah crew would get to be position coaches. Phillips as OC/WR, and Hall at DC/DB… or just take over DC myself. Probably K to LBs, Hall to DC/DB, take over DL myself, and Clune to ST. Woods to O-line/co-running game coordinator, Baldwin stays TE, McGiven to QB/co-running game coordinator.

If anyone doesn’t like taking orders from Phillips and Hall, they can keep it to themselves or walk… and apparently leave money on the table. If they complain, they can become co-assistant ST coaches.

  6. Saturday’s game is more interesting to me now. I suspect Hall doesn’t have time to implement all of the changes he’s planning THIS week, but I still think McLovin will be on a short leash and will be told to call more of a run game if he isn’t.

I suspect Hall will want a solid ground game to keep his D off the field so that their improved play has more benefit to the game.

I haven’t looked at Colorado’s defensive statistics yet. Anyone familiar with their strengths and weaknesses? Are they good against the run this year for example?

    • Nope.

I don’t think anyone except Wiscy fan thought it would be this close. Even the rah rah Rileys said it tongue in cheeck, if at all, because they knew the numbers.

    • Ironically, they were both hired for pretty much the same (and wrong) reason: they were not like their predecessor.

They’re both nearly equally mediocre in their HC records.

As somebody pointed out, ISU has twice(!) now lucked out in not having to buy out an underperforming coach.

Can Barnes manage a good hiring process and capitalize on this opportunity?

          • They should be. They usually make an announcement about such things.

I don’t think Bobby D had any faith in firms at the end. They gave him some really bad coaches over the years. So I don’t think we got announcements like we did previously. They have to be vetted, and that stuff remains private because it’s not right for a public institution to share that kind of investigatory stuff about individuals. But the parameters and job posting need to be posted publicly by law.

      • It’s how these things usually go. ADs/search committees are often so focused on “fixing” whatevezr went wrong with the last hire they lose sight of the big picture. The rah-rah-cheerleader type just left for a different job? Time to hire an X’s and O’s guy. The retread failed to turn the program around? Get the hot young coordinator.

          • Hmmm… someone who knows how to use Twitter. Who wouldn’t be afraid to tell an underperforming assistant “you’re fired!” Some kind of football experience, like maybe having owned a football team. Someone who many people are saying comes up with the best game plans, like you wouldn’t believe.

          • Many people are saying his big manly hands would be perfect for teaching proper technique to receivers. I assure you there is no problem.

          • Ooh! Ooh!

Then we could sue the NFL and bankrupt the Pac 12 while also bankrupting the school… six times… while paying all employees the same as we pay our student athletes. And then it all gets topped off by the nuclear reactor on campus going kapooey when we try out some new TD celebration because the cheapo fireworks just aren’t manly enough.

And we would end it all by writing letters of apology to Kirk Nevin.

            He was right.

          • If it’s any consolation, we would win our case against the NFL. But the jury, after hearing what our coach had to say and what he claimed, would award us $1 to split among the 12 Pac schools.

            So there’s that.

  7. The whole recruiting thing really bugs me. I remember hearing reports about kids not hearing from the coaches for long periods. Many brushed it off as our coaches moving on to better prospects. But now it seems more like our coaches were just completely incompetent and f’ed up a lot of opportunities to land some really talent. Although, they probably would have messed with their heads or not exploited their strengths, so it might not have made a difference.

    • I think your only argument here is whether or not “better prospects” justifies poor communication.

When you build a relationship with someone and need to drop them on a professional level, you need to communicate that properly. You should continue recruiting them as assets who could have future value. They still have word of mouth. Hell, they could go be all-world somewhere but really love the relationship you retain, so you get a gem of a grad transfer down the road.

When you don’t communicate the truth to someone as soon as you know it, you look disoriented. The truth isn’t going away. They’re going to figure it out.

    • That was so exciting. Waking up to Riley gone/GA gifted right before Christmas….aaah. Still remember that pleasant feeling like it was yesterday.
      So so wrong.

        • Looking back at it with a clearer head now, it had the potential to work if all had gone GA’s initial plan.

          Aranda at DC.

          Baldwin at OC.

Bringing Kafentzis with him from Wisconsin.

Pretty decent battle plan if it had all gone correctly.

          • Yeah. Even if he kept Baldwin at OC with a decent QB things might look much different. I was so bullish on GA, but I remember in those early threads I noted the only way I could see GA failing was not finding a QB…that comment was based on our roster and his history. I had so much faith in him that I thought he’d figure it out.

In retrospect, I think it’s true we all fell harder for GA than we should have because he was anti-Riley. Eventually that schtick worn thin, just like Riley’s, but for different reasons.

GA’s impatience was ultimately his downfall:

            1. Demoted OC/promoted McGiven — no reason for this given Baldwin got Seth as a QB.
            2. Moving QBs and players, in general, around too much.
            3. Hail Mary on Luton just because he was impatient.
            4. Fell in love with Washington State’s offense mid plan, even though it was opposite of his original vision of “arm, legs, mind”…
            5. Leaving two jobs under bizarre circumstances.

            Etc.

Just so impatient. Tried to skip years of the rebuilding process. The attempted shortcuts bit him in the ass. I think he’s a good coach with some self-destructive personality traits.

We did get some facilities because of him, and GPAs were up, broke the CW streak, cupboard is not bare if we can keep the current guys on board and just find a QB, so there are a few positives. I don’t have the same bad taste with him as I did with Riley. With GA it’s like…more like “What if?” type melancholy. If he only had more patience and could see things objectively he would have been fine by year 4.

          • There was an interview done with Aranda when he went to LSU. In it he said GA told him to stay at Wisconsin, and that it was what was best for him and his young family. FWIW.

          • Not that it matters now, but Kafentzis was a 4 star dual threat QB that was a 4 year starter, 3800yds/40td/14int passing, 1800yds/25tds rushing his senior year. 13,000yds/115tds passing, 7000yds/103tds rushing, career. No guarantees that it would have translated to college but comparing him to SC is just silly. 57% career completion percentage so not incredibly accurate, but not terrible.

          • There’s a reason so many staffs have looked at Kafentzis and all decided he’s not a QB. He’s a very talented athlete, but he could have been saved a lot of headaches had his father not kept insisting he was.

  8. Cory Hall seems like a down to earth dude. I wonder how hiring him as the head coach on a bargain deal and spending the money saved on a top notch OC and DC would work?

      • I thought I included that in my post but guess I was just thinking it and didn’t type it out. Yes, obviously wait and see what he does.

      • Don’t get me wrong, I only meant we’d have a young, hip, energetic (I think) HC with (likely) older more experienced assistants. Thus the “might” and “a little like”.

Agree, lets wait and see. At least Barnes didn’t go with HC by committee, or even take things over himself.

  9. I would not wait until the end of the season to look for a replacement. As I said before, if Barnes waits, the new coach will have less than a month until early signing period.

No matter how Hall does, I would not hire him full time. If he were hired, few if any coaches would stay which is fine but it means Hall would have to hire an entire staff in a short period of time. The support staff would likely need to be replaced too. Hall just doesn’t have enough experience coaching to put together a staff he could trust. It’s just too tall of an order for a inexperienced coach.

    • An observation I had from the interview with Hall yesterday: when asked who he called for advice, he talked about position coaches and one head coach (from Ventura CC, Luton’s old stomping grounds). I gather he doesn’t quite have the network required to pull together a large staff (even GA arguably didn’t).

  10. I want to see how Hall does first but,

I’m all wet, but here are metrics I would like to see employed on next hire barring Hall’s year-end hire:
    1) a coach with a track record of taking under-performing teams and winning more games their first season than the last. Maybe this is unrealistic, but the Meyers, Sabans, Harbaughs, Petersens of the coaching world do this stuff, even their early stops.
    2) a coach who “owns” their adopted players. Something Meyer said recently which I think was GA biggest flaw-a lot of attrition-some necessary…but still. There seems to be a solid base to build on. This would probably include keeping base O and D systems similar (what is our O?).
    3) search nationally. people keep echoing the same names. Do we need a coach with NW roots or someone who travels well? I can see someone with midwest or new england roots being quite happy in Corvallis.
    4) in-game awareness.
    5) A coach with a good grad transfer QBs ear.
    6) young and savvy. Don’t think I can watch another “old-school” coach manage their staff and players.
    7) strong recruiting, but also “over-performance” given their recruiting-This is tired after Riley so think Leach instead.
    8) more than just W-L record. SOS needs to be part of that metric.

  11. Jonathan Smith is not interested in the HC job.

    https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/uw-husky-football/uws-jonathan-smith-says-hes-flattered-to-be-linked-to-oregon-state-job-but-focus-is-on-huskies/

Mike Yurcich also is appealing for what his energy, offensive mind, and attitude towards scoring TD’s. his current salary is around $400-500k per year.

    https://247sports.com/Article/Oklahoma-States-Mike-Yurcich-is-no-longer-just-dreaming-52390134

        • In fact that is actually as interested as someone could possibly sound lol… Usually guys who end up taking the job flat out say they aren’t going to take the job only to then take the job. No such denial from JS. Expect an interview during that upcoming bye week if he doesn’t have recruiting trips planned.

    • Moran also had an equally lazy list. They make it sound like their lists are actual lists of coaching candidates that Oregon State is considering, when in reality, they’re just lists any average joe could gather by picking names out of thing air and typing them out.

What happened to the deep dive effort that we have come to expect from the oregonian?

  12. So regardless of who we hire to replace Gary Andersen, when can we expect the athletic department to work on cleaning up the crew that runs things around OSU athletics?
For instance, the hokey game day atmosphere. Why does everything have to be half-assed?
The Ideation team seems to do a decent job with digital media, but then we take 2 steps back every time the crappy chainsaw sound gets played on 3rd down.

I really thought things would improve when the GA regime took over. Maybe it was baby steps, because they did get rid of the inflatable helmet. But we still have the VTV banner form 2015 covering the Valley Center. Even if they like the banner, they could at least paint over the “coming in 2016” lettering.

I just feel like no matter who comes in to coach this team, there’s still a level incompetence permeating that athletic department that needs to be addressed. It’s almost like we field a football just because we have to, but not because we want to actually be good at football. How do we change that attitude?

  13. So I was checking out the Bennyshouse forum and ran across this, from OSUProf, a guy who really knows a lot about the financial situation of OSU athletics.

    >And as I’ve been writing for years now, the percentage allocated to football declined steadily over a 16-year period from 30% in FY 2000 to 20% today. The conference average allocation to football is 28% of the total department expenditures. You can thank Bobby D and his protege Todd Stansbury for these bad decisions and more.

That’s astounding. We need to really up that budget ASAP and start paying for decent assistant coaches, coordinators, weight rooms or whatever we need or we’ll be in this same situation in 3 years. Hopefully that’s why Barnes was brought in.

Football is the money maker and it’s tough to shortchange the other sports but if we spend more on football, we can make more money to be able to spend on the other sports.

I read a lot of Andersen’s texts to Clownzano as borderline excuse making but I think this speaks to Andersen’s ‘stop being short sighted’ statement, which I think does have some merit.

      • Why should we have to donate to expect OSU to treat football as well as other programs do? The average FBS program puts around 28% of its athletic budget into football, I believe OSU should meet that average

  14. On a scale of 1 to 10 how interesting would a Smith/Lake combo be? I am assuming Smith as HC is more ideal so Lake can maintain full DC duties and Asst Head Coach. How would this tandem compare to a Beau Baldwin staff?

Lake is a co-defensive coordinator so UW still has a guy and coming with someone you know is pretty common in these HC hires. Seems like that would help make Smith comfortable and have a key piece of his staff from the get go. I would be fine with DE comin in as OC for 2-3 years or as an offensive consultant. That staff could be interesting and have to think would get Reser much fuller.

Haven’t heard this thought yet so just throwing it out there. Obviously Lake would require good compensation to leave UW for this but he gets to be solo DC and Asst HC and Beavs could afford to increase his rate as Smith would come in as HC lower on the payscale since it would be his first HC job.

    • Not having read anything regarding UW staff relationships, I’d say 5.

It’s one thing when two people work in the same department, but are subordinate. Remove the top layer of authority… do they truly get along & have good camaraderie?

  15. Conspiracy theory time…..

Did GA do this to light a fire under all his assistant’s assess?? Scare them into stepping up?? Sees who rises to the occasion keeps the ones who do kicks the others to the curb. Why leak messages talking shit about your assistants to Canzano otherwise?

    Far fetched? Yes
    Plausible?? Yes

    • Seems worth a look. Has had good players but has put up great offensive production. Also works with backs so has experience developing them and fitting them into a high octane offense.

If Beavs considered Leavitt any ideas on who he might consider as coordinators? I think the ability to weaken Oregon is a good bonus aspect of that idea.

      • Leavitt is going to K State – and to pick a staff based on how it would ‘weaken’ our rival is ridiculous… The coaches down there in Eugene are terrible anyway; they may have been able to recruit but they couldn’t coach their way out of a Pop Warner game…

  16. Think Les Miles woild be a smart hire for Oregon State. He might accept with a good offer. He’d nake OSU relevant overnight.

Otherwise Beau Baldwin like Angry suggested originally seems like one of the better choices to gamble on. He has shown he can lead a team and lead it well and has plenty of NW connections and now more California connections too. High energy, capable guy with offensive chops that should make watching games fun. Does need a good DC to join him though.

Kelly I don’t think has much chance but would be awesome. Leavitt is worth a look. Norvell worth a look as well. Lastly maybe WSU’s Alex Grinch depending on who he could snag as OC.

    • Why would Les come here after the way GCA was treated?

Baldwin would be a classic ‘cheap and easy’ pick Lavonda, J John and CRob – no thanks…

Leavitt is going to K State…

Please, for the love of all this is good in the world, please give us an offensive minded coach!

    • Honestly if Oregon State passed on Beau again it is almost like we deserve to suck and this administration can’t even make a wide open 4 foot bank shot. He is the wisest choice on risk/reward as I see it. Has those Northwest and Cali connections and multiple years as a high performing HC in the NW. He is a good recruiter. The job really seems to call for someone just like Baldwin. He’s different enough and relishes in going toe to toe with anyone. Probably would give OSU the best offense of almost all the candidates. Should be enough money left to also secure a good DC.

Would hate to see Oregon State mess up on a good thing twice. He have a rare opportunity at a reset and correcting the mistake we made before and letting Beau get this program going. He seems like an ideal fit for Oregon State and what they want to become.

      • Gimmick offense – check
No experience recruiting elite talent – check
6 months of Power 5 coaching experience – check
        Yes, please, let’s hire Baldwin!

      • Compete and utter bullshit.

Beau should show that he can run a solid O on this level before anyone on the P5 level needing a coach should consider him.

          • Pretty much. Playing on the D1 level is a process completely different than FCS and lower. A coach needs to step up and show proficiency over a period of more than two years before becoming a head coach at a P5 school. That low bar is bad enough as far as the percentages are concerning future success. Hiring someone with Baldwin’s experience is tantamount to playing a single number in roulette over and over. And, like some players who aren’t ready, you could ruin a promising career.

He could be the greatest coach ever in the future. But that most likely only happens because he doesn’t get hired until next cycle or beyond. Think of it this way. When DE ditched us, we could have gone and got the OC from Boise. Most likely he fails to deliver, and we never get the joy of having him stomp us in the future. Or he develops poor habits and is embroiled in politics and never reaches his full potential.

You have to have a successful structure in place to manage at least 105 people on a higher level. Only a savant can make that transition seamlessly.

  17. I’m not gonna lie, I have a sneaky suspicion that coach hall has everything it takes to make the Beavers really good. Call it a hunch, but I’ve seen a few things that is telling me that he is going to be a great head coach

    • In 2 interviews I’ve seen, I don’t think he’s quite confident yet; nor poised for that matter, to be a true head coach. He stumbles with his words a bit, repeats an answer when he’s finished answering it and he’s satisfied with said answer. He rambles(like me sometimes) without really taking a breath or even giving short answers. I’ll wait to see what the team does on Saturday, but we need a HC that is poised, personable, and relates to recruits well currently.

  18. I think that’s gonna get beat up on on this site. But we will see. I bet when the season ends we have serious doubts with going with anyone besides coach hall. Maybe I’m wrong tho

      • No way will he win more than 3 games of the 6 left. He does that and he will get consideration. I’d be happy if he got 2 wins. That will be tough in itself but he needs 2-3 to be a serious candidate. I look forward to seeing what he makes of a golden opportunity. He does have some good traits and as a younger coach, if he was paired with good coordinators, I do think he shows a path for Oregon State with potential.

        • Winning out is possible if not plausible – it only get’s easier since we are sitting at a #20 SOS right now and don’t play another top 20 team after playing 3 straight teams in the top 15…

      • Well, Hall has been handed a huge opportunity. And imo all he needs to do is get some consistent and strong play out of the guys on hand. Get competitive, and he might have a job. Just make it a contrast with the play under GA.

      • Yeah – we could have a USC situation on our hands. Just like when USC showed ‘Sark the door, Ed O comes in and turns the ship around and at the end of the season, he doesn’t even get a sniff as far as HC despite the support of the players. Wouldn’t mind having some of the wins though….

        • Ya, because we have the same talent level as USC. We also have a good to great QB as well….oh…wait…no we don’t have either of those things. My mistake.

  19. All you guys pumping Miles…no way. Are you kidding me?

LSU was fired by LSU for being mediocre. Amazing recruiting classes (due in part to huge recruiting advantages from geography and name-brand school), and very little to show for them. If he can’t get it done with 4 and 5*s, do you really want to see how well he does with mostly 3*s??

Case in point: The 2013 LSU football team yielded 9 draft picks in 2014 (5 in the first 3 rounds), including 7 offensive players. 6 of those offensive players started games their rookie season, and 4 of them were stars even as rookies. So half your offense is immediate NFL caliber, including QB, OG, 2 RB, 2 WR. How did they do?

85th in total offense; 58th in total offense. 5-3 in conference. How does that happen? Mediocre, “less with more” coaching. No way.

Think about how good WE looked with two legit NFL wide receivers (Chad Johnson, Houshmandzadeh). Now imagine Beckham and Landry on a college team with a QB who’d be an NFL starter in a year…

    That 2013 team had:
    Odell Beckham
    Jarvis Landry
    Jeremy Hill
    Alfred Blue
    Zach Mettenberger
    Trai Turner

    • *Miles was fired by LSU, argh.

I’ll amend this to say – he did win a NCG and had some great teams in his prime, but the last 5 years or so his teams definitely underachieved. That 2013 team should have been special.

      • Not at a point I can research but hasn’t a lot of his problem been most of his good players go to the draft after their freshman year and get picked based more off of physical athletic potential then results?

Meaning LSU more then any team is having to reload every year?

        • Except in unusual circumstances, a player can’t declare until after true junior year or RS soph year. Has to be 3 yrs out of HS.

Players leaving early comes with the territory of elite recruiting I guess- seems like a linear relationship. But usually you get at least one elite year out of them. A freak athlete without much production won’t get drafted in the top few rounds. Some guys might do it but it would be really dumb. Smart play is to wait for the great year that gets you first round $$$ (and enough training/skills to have a legitimate shot).

      • So he had the Mike Riley effect? That happens with teams that have a long standing coach. Nick Saban appears to be in a league of his own in the coaching world where he can stay at one university for his whole career and coach consistently without getting bored, tired, or complacent.

Coaches that tend to move from one team to the next within a 3-5 year period, are generally coaches that can’t sit still and need to consistently be challenged. Even if these coaches are top notch coaches. Peterson may stay at Washington for many years, or he may decide that he’s ready to try and rebuild another program down the road. It just depends upon the psyche of the HC and how stable he is mentally.

    • An .826 winning percentage at LSU with two title game appearances is slightly better than mediocre.

I think most here except you would take that kind of mediocrity.

      • He was a great coach in his prime, that’s fair. But he was slipping in the last 5 years. Every year after the 2011 NCG loss was underwhelming. And keep in mind that his talent level over that period was unreal.

    • Part of Les MIles issues were the amount of turnover because he had so much talent. They may never have had an experienced, cohesive team in consecutive years. It is a good problem to have, but not in Alabama’s division.

  20. Some potential named from smaller schools that haven’t beaten the Beavs in the last 15 years:

    Troy : Neal Brown $850,000/yr 3rd season record 18-12

Buffalo; Lance Liepold $405,000/yr 3rd season record 10-19 (overall –119-25) extension through 2020

    Toledo : Jason Candle $675,000 per year/14-5 3rd yr 14-5, has a 4 yr extension through 2021

Appalachian St: Scott Satterfield $525,000 per year/ 5th yr 32-18 extension through 2021

Idaho: Paul Petrino $417,000/yr 5th yr 17-36 extension through 2020

    Hawaii: Nick Rolovich $400,000 2nd year 9-11 through 2020

La Tech: Skip Holtz $515,000 34-25 5th yr at LaTech big $3.5 mil extension through 2022 (career record 122-96)

I think Liepold is interesting because he was so successful at Whitewater. Skip Holtz has name value and a good pedigree, has won everywhere but South Fla, large buyout though. Rolovich is the lowest paid coach in MWC and may take a shot, built in Poly popeline, but may be too unproven. Candle, Brown and Satterfield are all in prime recruiting spots to get the leftovers from the big schools and may not want to risk a change for the west coast. Petrino seems like a big gamble that I don’t like, but he has a coaching fraternity to pull from and has motivation to jump from Idaho as they drop a classification.

I am not enthusiastic about anybody from the Riley legacy. It entrenches the lame mentality of the Athletic department and continues the pattern of “Aw shucks, little old Corvallis, lunch-pail U”. If OSU is going to get out of its own way, the administration needs to stop thinking this is the 1960’s. I even am tired of another tribute to the Giant Killers. Give it up. Celebrate something that happened in the lifetime of the kids in the stadium. The Giant Killer theme has actually hindered anyone from striving to move forward and grow as a program. “Well, at least we beat 3 ranked teams in 1962. At least Terry Baker won a Heisman.” Ugh so pathetic and tired.
    Wake up Athletic Department!
Some Frat house should take the initiative AND TAKE DOWN THAT IDIOTIC BANNER ON THE ROOF OF VALLEY CENTER!!

    • Way to aim high OB! Let’s get a small school coach so we can hire another one in 3 years!

and yes, PLEASE TAKE THE BANNER DOWN! wait, what if it’s the only thing holding up this house of cards?

      • Not really sure about the sarcasm. I thought the idea was maybe find a guy who has coaching experience, and a proven system. Each of these guys is at a much lower pay scale and could get a significant raise, as bait.
What is the problem with finding the next guy on his way up? I’d rather go that route than surround a P5 OC or DC who is riding the coattails of the Head coach’s system, which may require hiring another in 3 years as well.

        • I’m with you but those candidates’ system isn’t proven in a P5 conference… And I think, right now, we have to take a bigger risk than just a small school coach with something to prove (or not prove)…

    • Bring back black helmets next year and design new unis so the new coach has a fresh start and a fresh identity. The existing unis are 5 years old. I’d prefer going with Adidas.

Jason Candle appears worthy of consideration. Has done nice things at Toledo. I’d interview him if I was Barnes.

      • Candle might play well in the midwest but he doesn’t have the pedigree (or connections) to recruit in the west – I think he’d be great for Nebraska…

      • The unis are also very terrIble except for a few combos… need a grey version, baby blue alternates and even a dark blue.. mix up the palates since black and orange together are generally hideous unless it’s Halloween .. the OSU gear I got my baby boys is all in more neutral or bright tones with orange and or black as an accent and they look dope.. or cute in this case.

    • Yeah, Steve Preece and Mike Parker need to step aside. Can’t have a new culture when the same guys have repeated the same excuses and just want to continue the same fireside chats versus truly wanting Oregon State to turn the corner and evolve in a new direction toward something better. Seriously these sane guys have been doing this for 20 years. When is enough enough and someone else gets to showcase a new voice and vision for OSU?

I hope Barnes is reading this as new voices are needed. Ww don’t need to look more than 5-10 years in the past. Build the future. Parker and Preece need to take a seat and support from the sidelines like the rest of us while new voices for a new day are found.

Hoping Hall does well as interim but someone like him and whoever we end up with as HC deserves new announcers and not the same old song and dance that fans are sick of. That alone will go a LONG WAY towards letting this program recover and be something the next generation wants to support.

    • I would take Leipold as an offensive coordinator maybe, but not as a head coach. He’s been a disaster at Buffalo, and it wouldn’t inspire any confidence in the football program.

    • I wouldn’t put too much weight on Baldwin’s results at Cal. It’s one year and his track record as a head coach shouldn’t be discounted vs one season.

He might be a better HC than a OC. If the Beavs D shuts him down, then there should be significant worry about his candidacy.

      • I would put all the weight I can in on Baldwin’s results at Cal – it’s a direct result of his system and philosophy and it’s a gimmick offense…

        • Cal also started out much better than expected. Have cooled a fair amount bit their schedule like OSU’s also got tougher. Cal was predicted last as they aren’t loaded with talent and thought was would take Wilcox some time. Winning at North Carolina was impressive 1st game and Beau had a considerable role in that. None of his recruits though. He had a strong program at EWU and damn near beat UW in Seattle while scoring around 50 points in that game. I’ll take whatever ‘gimmicks’ produced those results versus the next to no offense under McGiven every day of the week.

Who do you like as offensive minded candidates by the way?

  21. Just floating this out there as a candidate: Steve Sarkisian

He knows the PAC12, can recruit, and would probably like a chance to redeem his head-coaching career. I’m not thrilled about it, but it could end up being a win-win for all parties involved.

    • If his ultimate goal is to head coach in the NFL then he’s better served by staying an OC at that level. I don’t see him coming back to college unless he just hates the coaching in the NFL.

  22. What do we know about Tulane coach Willie Fritz? Heard he runs some kind of shotgun option? Navy coach not in my Top 3 but he is 17-2 in his last 19 games. Pretty good.

Alex Grinch seems like the wildcard. Could get behind him if I had a sense of who he might tab as OC.

    • Games would be a lot cooler with less chainsaw on 3rd downs and instead everytime we force a punt we play “He’s a mean one..Mr Grinch, He’s a mean one Mr. Grinch!”

      • You know what would be really cool?

If we would stop playing electronic farts or bells or whistles or songs that have cool lyrics but are musically compromised anthems at best… that would be cool.

How about we allow the fans to get loud on 3rd down? At least in the 4th quarter on a blowout we wouldn’t have to listen to what sounds like a cicada on a quiet evening.

  23. Watching Bull Durham…”he has a million dollar arm and a five cent head” line made me think of Luton, and how many coaches fall for that, much to their demise.

    • “five cent head”, in some ways you could be speaking of GA. Anyway, here is what his old buddy Whittingham said:

“I’m just going to say it didn’t shock me,” he said when asked about Andersen and Oregon State parting ways. “… I’ve known Gary a lot of years and I know how he thinks and what his makeup is. So yeah, that’s what I said. It didn’t shock me.”

      http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-macintyre-shocked-by-andersen-news/article_1a95875e-778d-5246-a29f-84fdc3903f98.html

      • Look, I sincerely believe that GA came to OSU as a ‘stepping stone’ to get to Utah when it looked like early on that KW may not be there too much longer and than Utah extended KW’s contract. This was never a long term deal for GA, he just wanted to be in the vicinity when that job, his ultimate dream job, came open. That must have been shot to the gut when KW got extended.

It may be the reason that GA never really put in the effort – if you don’t have a selected QB after 3 years in a rebuild?? As it is, with his record, GA will be lucky to be a coordinator at some mid-level school or he may just start selling insurance.

        • ‘didn’t put in the effort’? Based on the wear on his face this season I’d say that’s hogwash. But, yes, where he failed was in identifying and/or developing a QB. Congrats on your clarity of vision.

        • What makes you say this? Has he in any interview ever called Utah his dream job?

He isn’t LDS. He played at Ricks (not Utah.)

Seems the most plausible scenario is the one being presented: GA billed this whole thing as getting the boys back together. Problem is: most of his “Boys” are ok lower tier coaches, but can’t cut it in Power 5. Some of them really suck. First time where the Program was truly his to build exactly how he sees fit and he fucked up. Fucked up from the start and things have gotten progressively worse with his coaches. Left the University paying for the shitty coaches he hired, and was letting everyone down.

You can tell it was heavily weighing on him and has been for a while. He’s a whacky guy and went the way of the Samurai: fell on the sword.

I do think he leaves the University better then how he found it everywhere accept for QB.

If everyone sticks and buys in to the new guy, there are good building blocks for next year. Just need a QB who can manage this thing.

  24. Listening to the ESPN Podcast for Tuesday, a name came out of left field:
    Ken Niumatalolo, Navy

I will be surprised if a move like this is made but… let’s discuss the potential. Thoughts? Pro/Con/ESPNIsCrazy?

    (the third one is implied)

    • If we are going someone older I prefer Miles for ticket sales but the Navy coach is better than most older names. I am leaning more and more towards a younger coach though. Oregon State is too old in its thinking and tends to hire older guys stuck in their ways. Rubs the next generation and future demographic of fans the wrong way and they are distanced from supporting the school and program more.

Someone like Grinch seems like just the shakeup and reinvention we need. If he strikes paydirt we would be sitting in prime position with one of the younger coaches in the Pac-12 that recruits would prefer to play for and better relate to. It also heals the narrative of what Oregon State football can be and be a key piece of a complete reset that positions us soundly in the minds of recruits and fans over the next half decade plus. Go among the burgeoning wave of coaches about to come into their bloom now and you can be in a great spot soon.

      • What about Phillip Fullmer or Bo Pellini? Weren’t these guys terminated from there respective schools after 10-win seasons? If Mike Leach can come back – Bo certainly could, too. I’ll bet Nebraska fans would say all is forgiven for a 10-win season again. With Fullmer, I don’t know how old he is but playing in the SEC, Tenn was always competitive and recruited toe-to-toe with ‘Bama.

Geez, do’t we have Ohio State coming in to Corvallis in a couple of years? Somebody should be getting us out of that potential debacle.

      • My take:

Hire an younger HC (w/ offenisve mind) who connects well age wise with collegiate players. Who can bring in experienced coordinators, preferably those with connections to West Coast/NW recruiting to solidify the recruiting cycle as well as have a record of improving different units’ fundamentals (it seems like we have been lacking in this among particular groups).

Allow the HC to proactively lead/design the football culture.

Basically… what a team in Los Angeles has done. It seems to be working for them?

    • You should have been here Monday. That name was mentioned several times. He’s a devout Mormon and he passed on BYU, so I don’t see him coming here. Secondly, without meaning to offend Pettibonehead, the triple option would be a return to the dark ages and could potentially set them back years if it failed. I would rather see a full on Air Raid offense than a triple option.

      • The triple option is rare enough at this point that it is difficult to defend because teams don’t see it often. The bigger issue may be recruiting.

While Navy has some disadvantages in the types of kids that go there, the coaches don’t really have to sell the school either.

Although, you’re not going to be competing for the typical 4* kids so maybe that does have some advantages.

  25. I was watching the “Talkin’ Beavers” show last night and Lindsay Shnell really ripped into Gary Anderson, calling him a quitter. That’s the hardest part for me in this situation, having to incompatible pictures in my head with no logical way to connect them.

OT: But, this is all supposed to be entertainment. In real life, I’m watching the fire maps from Northern California as they show the burning inch closer to my brother’s place. He and his family are out, waiting on the whims of wind and weather and the heroic efforts of firefighters. It doesn’t look good. Sure, he’s covered, insurance wise, but it’s hard to see much of what you’ve worked for go up in smoke.

  26. Is there some special uniform for this weekend? Maybe the battleship gray again?!? “11 strong?”

A shocked, poorly performing team with an interim coach playing a fellow cellar dweller may not be the best time to pull out “special” uniforms when the game & performance is unlikely to be special.

Please not the black “lollipop” helmets. Maybe retro Benny on white helmet, orange jersey, white pants?

  27. I agree w/ all the comments saying we need to quit living in the past, we’re not Lunch Pail U, we’re not Giant Killers, and focus on what we want to be in the future.. With the right leadership OSU can be so much more..

I hate, hate, HATE the you can’t win in Corvallis mindset.. BS!! Stillwater, OK has a consistent Top 20 program! There are plenty of examples of successful programs in “college” towns..

    • For those who remember Dave Kragthorpe; he won the 1981 FCS I-AA National Championship with Idaho State. It was his second season and his best season. He coached 1 more year and won 3 games that season before the Beavs hired him.

Those who remember Joe Avezzano: was OC for Tennessee Vols from 1977-1978 before being hired as the Beavs HC in 1979. His overall record as OC was 16-17-1 and the tie was against Oregon State in 1978. That’s a losing record.

Craig Fertig: Coached as an assistant for USC 1965-1973 and 1975. overall record at USC: 72-22-6 Was an assistant the whole time at USC with great recruiting, facilities and staff around him. As a head coach at Oregon State: 10-34-1.

My point to all of this is that we need to be careful whom we deem as a “home run” or even a quality coach that will translate into being able to put together a solid staff. We really do need to stop looking “into the past” because our past is awful! Tommy Prothro, Mike Riley, and Dennis Erickson, Lon Stiner, Paul Schissler, and Jospeh Pipal are the only coaches in the last 100 years of Oregon State football to have a winning overall record at Oregon State. With 4 seasons, Dennis Erickson had the best Winning pct. at .646. The rest were either .500 or .625 and .627.

Dee Andros in 11 seasons had a winning pct. of .444…do we really want to hang our hat on “The Giant Killers” where the coach in 11 seasons didn’t even end his career with a winning record? It’s great that we were able to beat the #1. #2 and #3 teams in the country, but shouldn’t we want to get the illusive Conference Title? If we played Alabama and got rolled, but won the Pac-12 Title that year, wouldn’t we be more thrilled about that than getting rolled by Eastern Washington and Sacramento State AT HOME? I mean, we almost lost to PSU this season. That’s going backwards in a hurry.

      • Thank you for omitting me my from your litany of losers. My eleven wins will stand the test of time.

Autographed picture on it’s way to you!

PS: There is a $75.00 charge for shipping and handling.

      • Good looks at all of them. I see the same flaws in some arguments for certain coaches here.

I will add that Pettibone took over a historically ~.500 lower level school, won his first game, then two weeks later never saw .500 until his last game there. And they had some ridiculously poor competition when they left the MAC.

So I’m skeptical about P5 coordinators who are riding coattails or just place-holding until he leaves for some job and the next “successful” coordinator plugs in as a replacement. I’m also skeptical of any non-P5 head coach that doesn’t have three years to show. By that time we should be able to see who just rode the previous staff’s work into a good/poor record. I’m much more skeptical of someone who falls off in year three than I am someone who maintains a winning program. Likewise, I’m more likely to trust a coach who can maintain the level he’s given then build up from there.

On our level, GA failed to maintain the first year and showed regression in the third. So I think we can see with our own program how that expectation should be avoided in future hires.

I also would like to see a coach who has shown that he notices the facilities when he’s on campus. Striving for and gaining funding from boosters for projects to enhance the facilities is a duty of a football coach. Complaining about their timeline is not striving. I mean, at least title every complaint with, “Coming in 2016.”

      • Gawd, I think I was just ‘triggered’ having to relive those coaches and their various resumes and records – I was there watching the product they put on the field (when Avazzano wasn’t busy prowling around the sororities). How can we have been the program that beats Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl (costing Bob Davies his job), celebrating a Top 10 Pre-Season ranking the following year to this! I kinda of know how, as I remember yelling and screaming at my car radio on a business trip in OR during the MR Part2 saga – don’t do it as he was given the chance and he walked away the first time.

I just want to watch some competitive football again. I want teams to be scared coming into Corvallis to play. I want to see the frustration on the USC coaches face at halftime when they are losing and a Matt Sanchez slamming his fist on the wall going into the locker room. I want to see a DB actually challenge a receiver across the middle and not let them get 10-15 yards before they think they should tackle them. I want to see the D End come around the edge ala Bill Swancutt and sack the QB for a 20 yards loss – I WANT IT ALL AGAIN!!

      • Well they fight UGA for the top recruits, so it’s smart in a way to run something different.
I know their classes are usually solid. Get quite a few 4-stars on D and then high 3 stars to fit the O.

Paul Johnson is really good at spotting players for his system.
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Johnson_(American_football_coach)#Georgia_Tech

They’ve only had one lean year in his entire time there. I can ask my buddy to chime in, but I know in general he’s happy with him and that offense. Says it’s a lot of fun to watch.

        • They don’t compete for the elite kids on offense with UGA or the other SEC schools. Johnson has a perfect situation because there are so many good HS players in that state he is able to fill out his roster will solid players. QB is a glorified RB. Lots of cut blocking and very little pass blocking means they get by with shorter, more mobile O lineman. That is used as negative recruiting against them.
Less skills that translate into pro ball from the offense.

          • Yeah the scariest thing about that thought is that if it doesn’t work you’ve given a coach 3-4 years of recruiting guys that pretty much don’t fit any other scheme. If it doesn’t work your team will be fucked for years.

          • Exactly WFO, that’s the risk…right now the roster can fit several styles at least. It’s why I don’t think we’ll even entertain the Navy guy, even though he’s a good coach and that system would be pretty cool to see.

BeavGopher, my buddy said they used to fight UGA for the same recruits. Maybe that was before Paul Johnson’s system. GaTech has far superior academics to UGA, so they have that going for them. I feel the Beavs should improve their academic reputation to help recruiting. The more prestige an OSU degree has, the more recruits will come just for that, even if football doesn’t pan out for them.

I don’t think OSU’s higher ups have a clear vision or understanding of how all these things are interlinked. Last I checked we don’t even have an SAT as part of entrance. To be known as having a selective entrance process helps a school’s reputation tremendously.

  28. Wow, some idiot with the dumbest call to the Joe Beaver Show I’ve ever heard: saying we need to keep our situation in perspective because the US soccer team lost to Trinidad and Tobago, and no one in Boston cares about Oregon State Football. Even Parker questions wtf the relevance is of US soccer to Beavers.

Hey caller, it’s the Joe BEAVER Show, not the Joe Futbol Show. Stupidest wtf call ever.

  29. Look, I know he’s probably not going to get serious consideration for this job, and he might not be able to do much to get us many wins this year, but I love his attitude, I love the way he carries himself, I love that he’s passionate and energetic, and I think that young kids would love to play for him.

If he was given the chance to install his own coaches (get rid of the Kevins), he might actually be successful as a major college coach.

  30. To anyone on the interwebs who publishes a list of potential OSU coaches that includes Bike Smiley, go sit on a pointy stick.

I have seen some decent suggestions out there. I hadn’t considered Charlie Strong. Greg Schiano would be a good get. Scott Frost would be a waste of time, even if he came here for a couple years. I don’t know why, but I just don’t like Scott Montgomery.

    • Would love Schiano too but word is he turned down Oregon last year. Who knows though, maybe he saw through the crap and figured it wasn’t worth it. I hope they at least try with him.

      • He turned down Oregon and USF last year, USC and a couple others the year before, including Rutgers. He’s just hanging out in Columbus with the original juice man, Meyer.

He’s going to coach again. But I can’t get a good read on him. His twins graduate HS this year. So maybe he wanted to wait on that. Is he strictly a east coast dude? He built Rutgers over more than a decade… you know… the place that has nothing to do with the history of football itself.

I can’t find it now, but I’ve seen an article in which he said building a legacy is how he measures success. I don’t hold out much hope, but maybe he wants to find a stray puppy of a program on the west coast to rebuild?

          • BC sort of fits the lost puppy mold. I don’t honestly know that he just wants east coast . He spent a couple years between Tampa and tOSU travelling around to different schools, formulating a business plan for the next time he becomes a coach, including recruiting info and management techniques. And he’s turned down a lot of jobs most would see him fit to do in terms of stepping into a good situation.

The only thing I can think is he wants that school who really needs his abilities… in a P5 conference.

BC would be good. Out west, there’s really only us. There’s Kansas and Mizzou. Syracuse, Pitt and others out east.

            Idk, I guess we’ll see.

    • Hasn’t Strong only been at USF for a few months? Isn’t that a more attractive job at this point than OSU?

I would take him in a heartbeat.

  31. Men’s team picked to finish 8th in the conference. Good place to start. I think they’ll be on the bubble at the end of the year. Weak non conf will hurt. But it is those non conf wins that get them in the conversation.

Women’s team picked 4th. Prob about right. Role players need to step up into starters this year to keep the title streak going. Winning streak vs.oregon will prob be snapped this year.

  32. Alex Grinch is a must interview. Help him bring the right OC and Beavs will have a perfect mix of young, hungry and talented coach with one of the best defensive minds in the Pac-12 and a killer recruiter. His personality and can do attitude with high success in Pullman means he could bring the same energy and capability to Corvallis. Would deliver an ideal image for Oregon State on the recruiting trail and really feel he would be a big hit with fans too. A rising star leader to ‘reset’ the program with.

  33. I hope Barnes goes outside of the “OSU family guy who knows how to recruit to Corvallis” narrative.

But I expect the end result will be Jonathan Smith and some form of that for the staff around him. Unfortunately this will result in all of the Riley faithful backing him for too long and it may not end well.

The only thing that would make Jonathan Smith worth it is if he demands that:
    1) THEY RIP OFF THAT ITDIOTIC BANNER ON THE ROOF OF VALLEY FOOTBALL CENTER!!
    2) Barnes must raise $150 million in donations for the West Side before he signs anything. He should force the blue haired silencers on the old side to put up or shut up. They have been sitting on that old side for half a century watching OSU football wander in the wilderness.

If it is Smith, he ought to push those old Riley faithful to pony up before they get their guy to relive the Riley glory years in their minds. Let it be the House that Smitty Built

    • Can Jonathan Smith finish what Erickson started? Meaning, did Erickson ever talk to his players about how he is trying to get the boosters to support the necessary upgrades. I still remember that raising Reser video that went out to all season ticket holders and alum. That was revalutionary back then in 2000. What would be the equivelant today?

    • I’ve heard much worse.

He just couldn’t express a “We don’t play in Peoria, chill out,” sentiment.

I’m guessing the context is in the conversation about how OSU looks like the worst place in the country, and nobody who is any good at playing or coaching will ever want to come here… for another dacade.

The woe-is-us crowd does just need to shut up and let the adults move forward, even if that’s not the context.

  34. Joe Salave’a……Thats my pick.

Literally a living legend on the Islands, one of (if not the best) recruiters in the country, held in high regard around the coaching community.

Follows along the “For the Players, By The Players” mantra.

Would be an ambassador for our entire University, and would build our team from the Interior, out.

Also, would most likely poach KHJ to come home, and potentially Michael Johnson to be OC.

Anyways, you want a different type of energy, here it is.

    • From D Line coach to head coach is a pretty big leap. He could probably be had for a D coordinator position, just because of the bump in pay and job status.
I d9 like him though, especially if coach Chad is out.

      • I believe he has the title “associate head coach” as well, whatever that means.

I just think this is the dude, different energy, young, up and comer, strong poly community in Corvallis. I like him as HC because he would be the face of the program, this hire would reach more than just our Athletic Department, let him hire a solid staff (in other words, give him a shit load of money to do so), and let them recruit.

Keep the mean coaching age <45.

        • He’s given that title so they can justify paying a recruiter enough to be a coach. Eddie Gran gets the moola in the SEC/ACC for the same reason. I’m sure XBox boy was getting paid for the same.

          • WTF?

Eddie Gran is an OC? Who on earth is that stupid?

And Lupoi was hired by Saban. Apparently he’s that good a recruiter.

The lesson here is that if you’re going to spend on a higher paid position coach, it’s because he’s a recruiter, not a dedicated ST coach who doesn’t do any recruiting.

  35. IMO
Top of the list for me ..
Les Miles is one sure way to kick start the program back into the National conversation.
It’ll be a similar jolt of adrenaline that Erickson gave us. Some great recruits will hop aboard
the Mad Hatter express. Get us back to a top 20 team, then hand it over to a young buck.
He was a national champ & winner in the most difficult college football environment.
Otherwise, as interesting as some other names are to think about, I see Beau Baldwin as
the next best person. Younger, offensive, knows how to recruit the west coast. He was a
Nat champion and EWash. Dude can win.

I dislike the Johnathon Smith idea. Seems young, or soft, kinda Riley-ish but without the
    experience.
The Navy guy I see for the Poly recruiting thing. But just kind of meh.
Not a lot of likely or reasonable seeming candidates.
Who know though, Erickson called us, so did Gary.
    No one saw those coming.

    • Why all the love for Les Miles? He was terrible at in game management with regards to managing the clock and time outs in close games. His offenses were vanilla at best with top 5 talent every year and his teams chronically underachieved. He was Mike Riley in a trucker hat.

          • Really no different then Erickson, minus the NFL trips. He may want redemption, and to kick start his career again.
I don’t think we should actively pursue him, but if he shows interest you give him an interview.

          • There’s that.

I think of it as the oldsters who returned to their once great jobs. Bill Walsh and John Robinson come to mind. They already did their jobs, but their programs allowed them to come back and be retired coaches compared to what they were in their heydays.

          • Age is just a number. But you are right, that’s why I say don’t pursue him, let him come too us. Just giving him an interview could change the narrative about the program.

          • That’s fair. And maybe he ends up exhibiting a renewed energy.

I got the sense he turned into a laid back kiss the ring guy in the end.

      • The guy made it to 2 National Championship games. There are PLENTY of coaches that can only put up average results with top 5 talent.

Is Pat Casey perfect? If someone told you we could hire a football coach that will have the kind of success he’s had, would you hire him?

        Every coach has their flaws.

        • Sure but Les Miles is George Horton, not Pat Casey. Horton inherited a powerhouse at Fullerton and somewhat sustained it like Miles inherited from Saban at LSU. Pat Casey completey changed what was the Pac 10 and baseball in the northwest. If that’s the coach you’re looking for, it’s isn’t Les Miles. There’s a guy out there to do it but he’s not a retread that LSU got rid of for underachieving. Thinking Miles is a good coach because he got LSU to 2 NC games is the same as thinking Riley is a good coach because he almost got OSU to 2 Rose Bowls. There’s more to it than their peak years.

          • I’m not saying Miles is Casey. And I’ll buy the argument that Miles isn’t a turnaround guy (though you could point to Ok State and say maybe he was at one point).

Miles maintained LSU’s level of success for a good 8 years before the last few got him run off. His winning percentages, overall and in the SEC, were virtually identical to Saban’s at LSU (including the “only” above average final years) and he took LSU to 2 NC games (winning one) with his own recruits. He did all that while having to compete against Saban’s Alabama teams.

          • Good points DE. I think you nailed it in regards to needing a guy who can pull off a turnaround. I guess it’s hard to predict which guys can pull that off since I thought we had that guy already in GA.

  36. I completely understand the poly recruiting angle, but I think it’s a mistake to hitch the wagon to guys that you have to spend all of your time recruiting, then have them go on a mission for two years and then there’s a 95% chance they come back a fat brainwashed BYU commit. When it works, it works. But it never seems to work.

        • Is there a federal statute which might apply to academic fraud on this scale? I wouldn’t mind a bunch of people going to jail for taking federal funds to run this racket.

          • Coaches know cheating is going on.
            Allows cheaters to play
            Makes tournament
            Get bonus for tournment.
            Tax payers foot bill?

Sounds like fraud to me, but I’m not a lawyer, nor did I stay in a holiday inn last night.

    • What are predictions for how the college education experience and college athletics go in the long term?

We’ve talked a bit about this before, with the potential that fewer and fewer students over time have an on-campus college experience, and opt instead for more affordable community college coursework and on-line classes, or combinations thereof.

Then there’s the associated athletics, which is “managed” by a testicle and conscious-free NCAA, with sham practices and championships that any reasonable fan could not pretend to respect as legitimate. How does a ever weakening NCAA and the coaches and athletes it protects interact with a potentially decreasing college student base and physical presence?

Anybody wish OSU had an AD with a strategy and fortitude to go independent?

      • I don’t know if independence is the answer. There are always going to be the four of the original Pac 8 who are going to be dirty. For whatever reason, they’re like Kentucky in hoops. They get better at hiding it, but they get caught every now and then.

Zony gets to join that club. ASU only really had problems because it was too close to Vegas, but gambling is ubiquitous now. Utah and CU were good pick-ups on that front.

So it seems like a majority of schools can’t have their voice heard when trying to enforce the right thing. The regulating body says all the right words, but the performance on the enforcement end is now less than toothless.

Maybe we should all quit and walk away from football mid-season, leaving all that future TV revenue on the table.

      • About which, word went out yesterday that the whole infield reserved seating stands at Goss will be fully subscribed by season ticket holders, except for the student section down the left field line. In other words, single-game tickets will only be available next year in the outfield general admission grandstand by the Quonset hut. This shows, if any evidence was necessary, that the OSU fan base will solidly support a winner (but then, one might say, who’s base doesn’t?) and that the stage is set to capitalize upon recent success by expanding Goss Stadium. Which also goes to show that THE great lost opportunity when Riley reached his top in ’08-’09 was failing to capitalize on those Rose Bowl runs to finish the west side. BDC was clueless and Riley didn’t really care.

      • Scott Rueck? Not many care about gymnastics, but the Chaplins have been solid. The Pac 12 is tough and OSU just doesn’t have a steady stream of donor money (cough, Nike) like others.

    • The days of putting an old coach into the AD job are over. The job today is filled with sharp younger people, often with MBA’s, that have spent years working their way through the system.

I’m not certain Casey even has a Bachelor’s degree. He left the University of Portland in 1980 at the age of 21 to play professionally. Maybe he found a way to pick up the credits later.

Oregon tried that in 2013 when Bellotti was pushed aside. He didn’t last a year.

A better fit, if he’s interested, would be some type of “emeritus” focusing on fund raising.

      • > I’m not certain Casey even has a Bachelor’s degree. He left the University of Portland in 1980 at the age of 21 to play professionally. Maybe he found a way to pick up the credits later.

He graduated from George Fox while he was coaching there.

        • Barry Alvarez is the striking example of a very good coach becoming an even better AD. Not the norm these days. Pat could pull it off with the right underlinings I bet.

          • I dont know what to think of Sumlin. He seems young enough, and has the passion. Is aTm unrealistic about wins in the SEC, would he fit in here? Could he win here?

          • He can win here. And yes, aTm is unrealistic about winning. But they’re unrealistic about how they go about doing it, not about the winning part. Sumlin doesn’t get to be a full time coach there. He doesn’t even get to embrace being a figure-head for program revenues and endorsements. He was under the gun from day one, and he shot all his bullets at that time. There is a large segment at aTm who was waiting for him to fail in some way so they could just get rid of him from the beginning.

Franklin would be an idiot to take that job. But if he wants back into the SEC, those are the demons he’ll face.

          • You know how it’s funny that Daddy Phil gets a headset so he can hear the play calls?

Imagine 20+ of those people, some of whom run the school.

    • Can totally see Oregon State boosters pushing for Jonathan Smith at HC with Riley as his OC. Would make sense that Riley just started recruiting Dukart and Petras while he has some time remaining in Nebraska.

      • I’m a donor and that’s not a solution I’d advocate. But then again I’m a small donor. Don’t think Barnes will take my advice.

I’ve always wondered who the big time donors are now that Al Reser passed away. Curious to see exactly how much influence they have.

        • There were stories rumored about funds for a locker room project being frozen on GA. I can only assume those funslds were frozen by unhappy donors who didn’t like GA’s direction. (I think he even alluded to this in his text messages)
Making a leap here, but if the donors in charge of those funds were able to influence the GA shakeup, you have to think they also will influence the hiring process.

        • I’m not as worried about Barnes bending to the will of boosters. I’m worried that he will ostensibly hire a search firm, and we end up with Kevin Stallings.

    • So Riley, who supposedly knows how to recognize QB talent, wants two recruits from from GA, who supposedly can’t recognize QB talent?

  37. This whole Anderson fiasco is going to affect an already miserable recruiting class. I really think if we wait until the end of the season to get a coach we will suck big time for a number of years going forward. This current staff can’t recruit their way out of a wet paper bag. And we may lose Petras, our only hope for a decent QB finally. It looks pretty bleak looking at things today. Anderson should have stayed and just cleaned house.

    • agree that Anderson should have stayed and cleaned house. What are the odds of hiring back to back head coaches who were loyal to their assistants to the point of their own well being and professional future?

    • Meh.

It is what it is. It would have certainly blown it up at the end of the year with wholesale changes. That kind of instability just needs to disappear, and then you start to work from there.

It’s certainly not worthy of a bemoaned extended future. You have to save that up for when we hire the new coach.

    • You’re assuming Petras fits our next coach’s system. If that’s not the case then hanging on to Petras is a waste of a scholly, or the next coach has to tell him he won’t start for OSU. That sounds familiar. Anyway, the next coach could turn this recruiting class upside down or inside out, who knows?

      • Word was that Petras really liked GA. Our AD and boosters seem to have a thing for the no-nonsense, straight shooters. Nothing wrong with that.

Odds are that unless the new coach runs a triple option or something, the new guy will probably be the kind of coach Petras likes.

      • I hope a different OSU coach wouldn’t fall into the years-long trap of finding players for his system, rather a system that fits the players that are there when he takes over. The past few Beaver coaches seem to have had fossilized brains – my way or no way. Not convinced Beau Baldwin is a good pick for the Beavs, but he seemed to adjust based on the players as he brought them along.

    • Who knows what Andersen is telling recruits behind the scenes? Sounds like he’s reached out to some of the guys he’s been going after.

          • Curse of the Beavs.

            Helf is gone too.

The only reason RichRod is still at Zony is because he was literally playing his practice squad against us, and he sold out on our game to win the Territorial Cup… sort of like how Pettibone did for the last month of his first season here.

    • Had to look up what happened at Cal because I couldn’t remember… sounds like he was looking for other work while employed at Cal, and his record wasn’t exactly stellar. If hired at OSU not sure why he would do better or that he would be ‘content’ with even the best college town in the Pac.

      per wikipedia…

“Dykes finished the season 5–7, his third losing season in four attempts…His team also lost to San Diego State…

Less than a year after receiving (an) extension, Dykes interviewed for the head coaching vacancy at Baylor University

On January 8, 2017, California fired Dykes. Under contract through the 2019 season, Dykes was owed $5.88 million, 70 percent of his remaining base salary and talent fee.[48] Besides his losing record, California Athletic Director Mike Williams has stated that Dykes had never “settled into California, the Bay Area or the Cal experience” as reasons for the firing”

      • He wants to be in Texas. He hates the west coast… and the east coast… and the northern plains… and the Ohio Valley… and Oklahoma.

  38. Are we to assume GA just realized in Sept his staff was incompetent? Why would he have renewed most of them with 2 year deals this past February. It seems that would have been the ideal time to make a couple offensive replacements and then replace Clune when his deal expires this upcoming February.

    • Late realization after no results midway through season and through most difficult part of schedule…

Some type of bi-polar disorder potentially.

“There are several types of bipolar and related disorders. They may include mania or hypomania and depression. Symptoms can cause unpredictable changes in mood and behavior, resulting in significant distress and difficulty in life.

Mania and hypomania are two distinct types of episodes, but they have the same symptoms. Mania is more severe than hypomania and causes more noticeable problems at work, school and social activities, as well as relationship difficulties. Mania may also trigger a break from reality (psychosis) and require hospitalization.

Both a manic and a hypomanic episode include three or more of these symptoms:
      Abnormally upbeat, jumpy or wired;
      Increased activity, energy or agitation;
      Exaggerated sense of well-being and self-confidence (euphoria);
      Decreased need for sleep;
      Unusual talkativeness;
      Racing thoughts;
      Distractibility;
      Poor decision-making — for example, going on buying sprees, taking sexual risks or making foolish investments;

Major depressive episode – A major depressive episode includes symptoms that are severe enough to cause noticeable difficulty in day-to-day activities, such as work, school, social activities or relationships. An episode includes five or more of these symptoms:

      Depressed mood, such as feeling sad, empty, hopeless;
      Marked loss of interest or feeling no pleasure in all — or almost all — activities;
      Significant weight loss when not dieting, weight gain, or decrease or increase in appetite;
      Either insomnia or sleeping too much;
      Either restlessness or slowed behavior;
      Fatigue or loss of energy;
      Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt;
Decreased ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness.”

      https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/bipolar-disorder/symptoms-causes/syc-20355955

I am not making light of this or suggesting it is the only explanation. Others have suggested it is GA left due to a “health” issue, and bi polar disorder is a mental health issue. That’s not meant as a negative judgement on people with it either.

But many of the symptoms seem to fit GA – the high energy, self-confidence, “foolish investments” (coordinators for example), then the apparent hopelessness, weight loss, lack of job enjoyment, lack of sleep, potentially “excessive or inappropriate guilt,” indecisiveness (annual staff shuffling, qb shuffling, offensive coordinator changes).

This is a high energy, confident guy who has walked away and “shocked” his last two employers. The only one hasn’t said he’s shocked that I’ve seen at least in press is Kyle Wittingham, who knows GA well and maybe has some insight. Wittingham didn’t suggest GA had any bi-polar conditions, this is just my suspicion.

I thought his texts – select as they were on the part of Canzano – were potentially indicative of more than poor judgement.

        • No, I wouldn’t say that. I get that you’re joking, but that would be an oversimplification.

He’s likely intelligent, likely does care about the student-athletes, but his decision-making ability – and sense of strategy, including longer-term – are I think compromised by some form of this condition.

          • I think the “higher power told me to” answer to the question “Why OSU?!?” was a response meant to be beyond reproach.

“Well, he’s a man of character and faith and his higher power told him too! We weak press won’t challenge that response!”

And yes, I think there’s a pattern of it in his career.

  39. I haven’t followed this at all for the past couple days. Any headway in the coaching search? I briefly looked over some of the names being mentioned and so many are awful (Dykes??). Les Miles is never coming to Corvallis. Dude is way too proud and a total Hillbilly.

I can’t think of a candidate I love. I’m just glad Brady Hoke isn’t being mentioned.

    • I’m just trying to be realistic. It’s not a particularly desirable job and rolling the dice on a DII HC or a P5 coordinator is a gamble.

      • I’ve had one cocktail, so forgive me if this is stupid, but I’d almost rather have an older guy who is boring yet established. E.g. The Navy guy, but he’s a huge risk as mentioned because if he fails we have all the wrong recruits.

We just got burned on a somewhat unproven “hot commodity” in GA. He was late 40s when hired and considered desirable. These talks of Grinch, Baldwin, Smith…I get it, people associate youth with energy and up and coming next big thing, but I’m not sure reality bears that out. I feel like the ideal guy has to have knowledge and wisdom of what it will take to win in this environment. Not sure a young guy will have that.

I’m open to almost all names except maybe 10 guys. Dykes, Hoke, Riley, etc. No way with those old timers. I’d be open to a Calhoun, Navy dude, etc. Those types.

I never drink, though, so just one in and I’m not sure I’m making sense. Oh, and then there’s that phenomenon where people always want the opposite of the last coach. Happens with dating. If you date a prude, you want a slut. It’s exactly why we fell for Andersen. He was anti-Riley. Fans, Ray, and the AD really have to watch for that.

        I can’t think of a perfect hire. Maybe Chip…

        • I think the program is at the precarious edge of another death spiral, the hire needs to be an experienced winner, who kids love to play for and can get shit done. Throw everything at Chip and tell him to bring Helf with him.

          • I guess I should have read the thread. I’m just not in the mood to read it right now, because so many bad names are being floated that it’s meh to read. Sumlin? I honestly don’t know much about him. All I know is many people here wanted him last cycle. People I respect, too. So he has that going for him. He’s been pretty mediocre even with all the SEC advantages…I just don’t follow those schools enough to say for sure what’s going on. I definitely like him better than names like Dykes, Riley 3.0, et al.

          • I didn’t know much about him either, but jack had some good insite about him and what he has to deal with. Reading a few articles about aTm, it seems as though he is the coach but it’s not his team. I would think he would want to get out of that shitty marriage asap.

    • I don’t think there’s any evidence out there of an actual candidate that has contacted Oregon State or any candidate Oregon State has contacted.
I think for me, one name I’d like to see on the short list is Kevin Sumlin.
My fear, is it will be Jonathan Smith with Riley as OC (the thinking being that our boosters want Smith, Riley gave Smith his start as a player and as coach, Riley will likely be jobless soon, and Riley is already recruiting both of our QB commits to keep those lines of communication open)

Who knows, maybe we end up with Bob Diaco, Trent Bray since they could be let go too.

      • Smith and Riley are so gross. Especially Riley. Riley would probably make a good OC. He was good at USC in that roll and also when he did call plays for OSU he was good. But he’d be there just lingering in the background waiting to be the HC if Smith failed. For that reason, no way. Plus, I think it’s smart to cut ties and keep them cut. There has to be an OC who would be equally good as Riley who is not Riley. Identify that guy and hire him, not Riley.

Smith is gross for other reasons. Like, his personality is not very good for one, but also Washington fans dislike him as an OC, and he’d become a symbol that OSU fans will overpay and be biased for one of their own (incestuous), and he’s just not proven he’s read for that job. I’d take B. Baldwin over Smith, TBH. Might be a huge error and Smith goes on to be a great HC, but what proof is there of that? I want to stay far way from the incest. It’s just not a good think. Even Nebraska wanting Frost…bad idea, IMO, because they will give him so much more rope than someone who “isn’t one of them.” This is the bad part in hiring alums, IMO.

    • I’m not a fan at all. I lived in NJ when Rutgers hired him…one of my best pals and my brother both went to Rutgers….just…no. I don’t really care to elaborate.

So outside of that, I’ll just say he’s mediocre and not a good personality for OSU.

      • He was supposedly a disciplinarian who ran by the book at Rutgers then was humbled by his experience at Tampa, having to treat his players like they were humans.

  40. Ok my picks for the week

    Was St. @ Cal 38-24

    USC Vs Utes 24-18

    Zona Vs UCLA 28-38

    Devils Vs the Dogs 24-35

    Stan Vs ducks 27-13

Oregon State Vs Buffs biff it 22-18

  41. OSU is at a crossroads for the administrative, athletic depts from a national perspective/narrative. Because GA came in late and lost out on the first class, then Sitake left and bombed the 2nd class, now GA has left and this is the 3rd class out of 4 years that will be in jeopardy, not to mention the last 3-4 years of Riley. So we are at 8 years of a program without anyone focused to recruit at a basic level of consistency. I think the Scnell/Goe lines of “Be careful what you ask for, no one can recruit to Corvallis” are at least close to being accepted in too many fans minds simply because there hasn’t been any real difference for 7-8 years of mediocrity and upheaval.

My concern is that Barnes is having this mantra whispered in his ear by older staff/alumni and it starts sinking in to the point that he believes it and unwittingly handcuffs his own decisions for who is the right guy. Too many will desperately reach for Jonathan Smith simply because “he knows Corvallis, knows what it takes…” rather than his qualities, qualifications, vision for the program.

The college landscape is so much different since the late 1990’s: 85 scholarship rule, internet, hudl, twitter, social media, offensive schemes changing. Even the OSU athletic infrastructure has been upgraded to a competitive level, even if it isn’t completely on par with others in the conference. It is a mistake and an excuse to say that it takes a “special guy” to get recruits to come to OSU. It may simply take a guy with a good plan and a steady group of coaches around him, with some solid effort and consistency.

I think the Beavs need to hire a coach that insists on coaches who are great at teaching fundamentals, sharp and quick thinking for in-game adjustments, focused on winning before loyalty to friends on staff, expecting success through steady and consistent effort, has some offensive background, and has enough experience with several systems to vary the plan to his players, has a wide enough experience with other coaches to pull in highly skilled coaches, can relate to the recruits as a genuine man, not a buddy.

If the choice is based solely on OSU guy, knows Corvallis, Pac10 roots, NW roots, knows California, all for the sake of how he will recruit, it will fail. A head coach has to be more than a recruiting niche to Corvallis guy. I believe that any coach worth his chops will be able to recruit his guys to Corvallis if the right plan and staff is in place. Don’t undersell Corvallis like it is 1950 still.

  42. I wouldn’t want to be Barnes. This is a tough hire. You have the old farts in his ear who probably want Riley or some other awful options, the younger fans who want youth, and a search firm telling him xyz. Brutal.

The odds of getting his right are pretty low, IMO.

  43. I think a mix of an older, proven winner who hires a bunch of young, energetic position coaches to do the heavy lifting in recruiting would be a good way to go. Really the head

Try to hold onto Hall and Telly. Maybe Kerry to keep the Arizona pipeline in tact. Coach Chad.

    Axe the rest.

    • *was saying Really the head coach is just the closer. The position coaches are the ones in constant contact with recruits and the ones racking up sky miles.

      • Sorry. It’s a video. Just like a 3 minute short prep’ing for tomorrow. Inspirational with clips of Coach Hall.

I think the players are really going to rally around him.

Hopefully McFuckstick doesn’t fuck it up

        • Oh. Hall might win tomorrow. Players are probably emotional and want to take it out on someone. Who knows, though. They still have straight jackets on them in McGiven and the other goons.

          • Speaking of McGiven and the goons: What kind of a feeling do you think you have as a guy who sucks so bad it forces your boss to quit?

Do they now coach their asses off trying to save themselves and prove it was head man holding them back?

          • They probably try, but will be limited by their limitations.
It’s like, I can go try to be Jimi Hendrix because Mitch Mitchell quit on me, but I’m still going to play like AngryBeaver.

          • Perhaps Mcgiven and other goons won’t be in charge of anything – maybe Hall has let them be figureheads and put others ( I haven’t any idea who) in charge.

  44. Tonight at 7:30 on ESPN is a showdown that could help determine our next HC. Wazzu vs Cal in Berkeley. Grinch vs Baldwin. Both these guys are popular amongst Beaver Nation and currently both are amongst the favorites to get strong consideration. Outcome of tonight could put one guy even more in the forefront.

Both coaches woild bring unique qualities and capabilities to OSU. Slight Grinch lean myself. Like where he puts OSU when considering the next 5-6 years in their totality. Think he gives Oregon State a much improved image for recruiting. Baldwin is no slouch though and there are reasons to like him too.

Should be a very interesting game tonight. Wazzu has the better QB and is playing well as a team but Cal is at home and wants to bounce back. Consider this game an early deathmatch with implications for Oregon State’s next HC.

    • Why the love for these guys?
Grinch doesn’t even have a wikipedia page. Total nobody riding the coattails of some good Leach recruiting cycles.

      • He’s better than Beau.

But he’s also a fit in a system that runs wide open. He would need to exhibit competence for another year or so and have an OC in line to take over somewhere. I guarantee his shine won’t be as bright after next year.

I do think more schools should employ the Bill Moos method of finding assistants.

        • Is WSU’s upperclassman, etc? That might explain his success. People always overlook that.

We looked decent toward the end of last year. Then this year with youth with looked like absolute shit. I think the next hire should be succeeding with underclassman. It shows it’s a truly great coach and not just a guy using more developed players to beat up on others and build his rep.

I don’t know enough about WSU’s roster. But since Leach has been building a while I assume there are a lot of seniors on that D.

          • It’s not necessarily the D. They have some good players. But they’re playing backers along the front line. Nobody has bothered to try and blow them off the line yet. If that was USC’s plan, then Darnold called a lot of audibles. His excuse was that three of their O-line starters were out, and a bunch of frosh played. But still….

Now that they’ve been allowed to become something they aren’t (lightning in a bottle), they will be more difficult to scheme against because the next coach will assume that the power game has been tried. Or they’ll succumb to Utah for 40 points, but Falk will just go off and win. So nobody pays attention to the failed D.

Next year without Falk to back up D failures will look a bunch different. It would absolutely look different with these same players doing as well as they have thus far.

It’s a lot of hype about a lot of circumstance having nothing to do with the hype.

  45. I see where Smiley Vanilla Riley is trying to efff the Beavs again by trying to flip 2 QB commits for 2018 (Petras and Dukart). It’s not enough that Smiley and his lazy azz routine got old quickly, but now he’s trying to stick it to the Beavs again. Funny thing is…he’ll probably be out of a job the end of this season so I don’t know how he intends to convince kids to flip their verbal commit to Nebraska when he’ll be done.

    • Riley will be fired after Ohio State creams them on Saturday. I’d put the odds at like 80% on that. Definitely at the end of the season….tough part of the schedule upcoming and he might not win another game.

    • Love the call by Beau Baldwin on 4th and 2 to end 1st half with a TD…..fake dive and pass for a TD. Beavs need to get BB after end of season to take over the program if Cory Hall doesn’t turn it around the final six games.

  46. I don’t get all the love for Grinch. People seem to like him because WSU has played good defense for 6 games. If we were going to go that route, I’d much rather have Salave’a, since he recruited all his players. I have a feeling it will be Baldwin, which makes sense for a lot of reasons, and I think would be successful. Also, Eric Dungey is killing Clemson right now. He would’ve gone to OSU if Andersen had tried recruit him.

    • I don’t get it, either. Isn’t he just riding some recruiting coattails?
What evidence he build that D via his own recruiting and schemes? Is the D made up of upperclassmen or frosh/sophs? Big difference in how you look as a DC.

Avoid like the plague for now. Revisit in 5 years once our next bad hire fizzles out.

      • Watch the game and let it play out. Finch is an ascending coach. Talk Missouri would be highly interested if their Head Coach position opens up after the season. Beavs would do well to find a welll respected younger coach on the cusp. I’d say it is 90 percent likely Grinch is a Head Coach by next year or the year after at most. Analysts have said he is ready to take the next step. You either take a guy when a school like Oregon State has a shot or you miss your chance almost always. Beavs do have another shot at Beau, and will surely interview him, but that is only because of the very strange and quick exit of GA. I expect both Grinch and Baldwin will be among the 4 or 5 interviewed and rightly so.

        • “improved every year”

which fits my question of whether this has anything to do with him, or is simply younger players become older. i don’t know. i don’t follow wsu.

i’m skeptical of hiring a wsu coach. they’re basically us.

  47. I’m not in the Grinch camp, but he’s been recruiting coordinator at a few of his stops and he played at Mt Union, the winningest program ever, so he does have a few things in his favor aside from the obvious. Not sure he has the experience yet, but I bet he ends up at a G5 job soon.

Unless someone like Charlie Strong wants to come, there’s no obvious candidate here. I don’t think the majority of AB will be happy no matter who gets it.

  48. The two biggest upsets of the year feature qbs that GA passed on. Luck o the Beavs? Yeesh.

First Kempt then Dungey? Too bad for GA that he couldn’t win the lotto on at least one of the guys he kept.

    • Love Ells and his whole family.

Can’t ever root for the Yankees… like… ever.

      Reggie Jackson is to blame.

The DH rule is a close second.

  49. I would hope that when McM finishes his distinguished career at Fresno St., he would find it in his heart to forgive and comeback and coach the Beavs in 2025 or so.

    • So unexpected given what they are.

I mean… who woulda thunk that would work?

It must take some magical football genius to come u with that kind of plan.

  50. Baldwin kept himself in good consideration tonight. Thought he called a smart game. 5 turnovers didn’t help Grinch any.

Miles or Baldwin is my choice and the least risky. Baldwin will bring an actual identity to OSU and Miles gets us more notoriety than OSU has had since DE. Would like Barnes to interview Miles but if not, Baldwin’s at the right point to coach a Power 5 team to some success. Beavs should have taken him the last time. Oregon State fits him and I think he’d get OSU to upper half of Pac-12 North in 3 years or less. He has already shown he can take on the Pac-12 while leading EWU to a national title.

  51. Beavs need an offensive identity. Got to score 35+ in this league to win with consistency.

Forget the search committee. Hire Beau on Sunday and get him into Corvallis next week to get started.

Announcers are pouring love on Beau right now. Saying he gets his players to find the joy they had of football when kids and how it is working and spreading smiles and happiness.

    • They’re not saying shit about Beau.

They’re talking about Wilcox and DeRuyter.

Beau is an afterthought o this night… except for your incontinent thoughts.

      • BS. They said Beau told his players to remember what it wss like playing with the joy they had in 5th grade. Mentioned him twice and no other Cal coach. Message got through to Bowers and the team played an inspired game for 4 quarters in blowing out the #8 team in the country.

        • BS back atcha you stupid spammer.

They said joy while showing Beau hugging players. But you would never know who the hell he is if you are watching it. He’s just some Dorito-eatin’ hanger-on that nobody mentions.

        • In short, they never ever mentioned Beau’s name. They didn’t talk about him in the last 1.5 hours, when I was watching. They certainly ignored him when the camera was on him in the end, like he was just some water boy hugging players.

You just straight up lied about all of this, and you expect anyone to believe any of the tartany shits you spam here?

    • “Saying he gets his players to find the joy they had of football when kids”
Isn’t this the exact qoute Coach Hall used at his presser on monday? If not it’s very similar.

    • I went back to look at the five minutes before you posted that.

Beau was not mentioned at all, as should have happened.

He was shown hugging players for an extended time. It was one of those moments when the producer in the truck tells the camera to stay on that guy until the announcers mention him and recognize his contribution.

They didn’t do that. He could have been the water boy, for all they care.

      • The last time the producer panned to a sideline, and nobody said anything relevant, it was when Bikey and Spanker were down on the 20 giggling with each other as the opposition ran a TD play past them.

That was possibly the most embarrassing moment in my history of being a fan of anything ever.

The camera showed the dude scoring the TD, then it came back and showed those two giggling about something. And the announcers said nothing.

      • It was during the final 20 seconds of the game. They distinctly mentioned him twice and his words to Find the Joy which they said 2 or 4 times and then elaborated on joy as kids, Bowers and smiles and happiness. You must be deaf. Then after the kins words of Beau getting his players to Find the Joy the students rushed the field. Quite a moment to wrap up their kind words of Beau and the impact his philosophy was having on the team.

        • It was not in the last 20 seconds, you spam fucking liar.

          Just fucking stop.

You’re worse than derailing logic for two months just to chase some weird QB non-controversy down a rabbit hole/

          • So… you now know what it feels like to have people listen to you or read your words.

Welcome to reality, you really really stupid spammer.

            You made up everything.

            Sleep well.

          • Did he log in twice just to neg me?

I can’t help it. I have a DVR, and I went and looked at the exact moments he discusses. They were showing Beau getting hugged by players while the announcers were singing Tim DeRuyter’s praises. They had zero clue who Beau was… none… nada… zilch.

  52. Just saw the highlights for the Cuse.

Their fan can’t be happy with those colors.

    Wtf?

When did the Orange become the red-orange with a stupid looking font?

  53. PHIL STEELE REPORT:

Gary Andersen surprisingly resigned this week leaving all his contract money on the table. The Beavers won the first 2 Pac-12 meetings (2013 & 2014) but have dropped the last 2 including a 47-6 hammering last year. Oregon State has taken on a much tougher schedule (#11 vs #72). They are being outgained by 173 yards per game, but just faced Washington State, Washington and USC in back-to-back-to-back weeks. Colorado is the defending South champ, but after a 3-0 start have dropped 3 in a row with their last 2 losses by 4 & 3 points. While Colorado State pounded Oregon State by 31 and Colorado beat Colorado State by 14, Colorado was -52 yards and Oregon State only -69 yards. RB Phillip Lindsay rushed for 281 yards in that loss to Arizona. Colorado has the better pass defense and much stronger offense and grabs the road win.

  54. AAAAAAGGGHHHH!!!!

Neal whatshisname on ESPN is so bad. I mean… he’s okay if he’s your friend at the bar telling a couple stories. But he really sucks.

    I know.

    Redundant.

    • Wow!

I hope dumb neal was kidding when he said anything Joel Embiid was proficient in any way.

Why is this stupidity on my TV?

I guess it could be worse. I could watch and comment on Dumbshit’s mutterings for the day.

You all would love for me to point out line by line how POTUS is just the dumbest shit that ever shat.

      I say that in jest.

I don’t believe that moron can perform a non-golf verb.

      • I honestly don’t know why I leave it on ESPN after late weekend games.

Their weekend late broadcast just pisses me off with bad schmaltzy pop references that are wrong half the time. That neal whatshisname is just a mumbling lounge lizard oozing faux cool.

    • I hope that the ADept. doesn’t get wind of that – if by some miracle Hall manages to pull out a win today, they’ll take the opportunity to up the BASF fee and ticket prices as it shows ‘we’re headed in the right direction’ and you wouldn’t want to miss out!

  55. I didnt watch any of the Cal/WSU game, but I keep reading how everybody is falling more and more in love with Baldwin now and that he owns Mike Leach.
But then I read that Cal only had about 37 pts, despite WSU turning it over 7 times??

That final score doesnt tell me Beau Baldwin beat WSU. Instead it sounds like Cal’s defense won it, and Cal’s offense was mediocre. 7 turnovers to zero? Credit to Cal for hanging onto the ball, but 7 for 17 on 3rd down conversions doesn’t get me overly excited.

Somebody tell me if I’m off base here. Should I expect to see the Joy Luck Club in Corvallis next year with Baldwin and Hall?

    • Watched the game. Cal offense was good and I thought play calling was better. This win was against one of the best defenses in the pac 12 I believe.

        • I think you have the wrong link. I tried watching it but just got a video of my aunt patty, pissed off after her bowling team got eliminated from the county tournament last night in Canby.

        • His ability to throw players under the bus is second to none. If it occurs over and over, year after year, with different players, maybe some self-reflection is necessary.

        • Just looking back at WSU’s schedule makes me think the defensive ranking looks better because they’ve played OSU, an oregon team with no QB, Montana State and a very shitty Nevada team. Boise St lit them up for 40 something and a gimpy USC was in the 30’s, I believe. (USC looked terrible against Oregon State so I tend to think they’re overrated)

Not saying WSU’s defense is terrible, but that it has benefitted from having a pretty easy schedule so far. I think Oregon’s defense, from what I’ve seen, is much better than WSU’s.

          • Exactly. Everyone thinks Grinch is great, but that schedule is terrible, and then on top of it isn’t that a heavily senior laden D? I don’t know the breakdown of their roster, but when we played them I thought a lot of those guys were older players.

Is he going to do better than Clune with our roster of young players? What’s the evidence he would? I just don’t see the point in Grinch. He’s proven nothing to me. Baldwin has been mediocre, but he’s been a HC and he also is mediocre with a Cal O that was supposed to be really bad. That’s more impressive then Grinch. Plus we want an offensive coach, not another defensive guy.

Grinch is a big no for me.

      • I guess i should track down a replay. Just 365 total yards of offense with getting 7 turnovers handed over makes it seem like they benefitted from having a bunch of short fields. WSU had only 30 less yards even with the turnovers.

        • Yes it was a Cal team effort that won. Almost all turn overs were forced by Cals D and sacks galore. Plus Falk played with a bad hand so there is that. But the play calling looked solid and Cal controlled the ball when on offense.

          • It was a steady offensive effort all night and overall had a smart execution to it as Cal was increasing its lead. Good two minute drill to end the first half. Cal outscored WSU by more than a 12 to 1 margin.
I thought he took what the defense gave him with some nice sideline throws and effective runs in the 2nd half but also stretched out WSU with multiple downfield throws to keep WSU honest and relatively off balance. Beau clearly outshined Grinch.

          • You and I outshined Grinch.

Yay. Beau played a controlled game against some foreign team he’s never seen before… week after week… year after year.

        • I’d want none of those coaches based on that game.
Can’t base a hire on one game, of course, but they’re all unimpressive. That game will probably throw some water on the fire. B. Baldwin is the best of the bunch, because as mentioned, he has at least been a HC before.

    • I’ll give Beau credit for not running his O last night. They just handed off and took it straight at Wazzu’s front. It was nice to see someone finally try that, even if it was because they were just trying to chew clock.

  56. For a realistic get, I would favor Baldwin if he was interested. At least he has been a HC and ran a kick ass FCS program. Otherwise, I don’t want to see a coordinator. If this hire gets messed up, they might challenge the previous losing streak. As mentioned, the administration was a given a 12 mil gift by Mr.BSC, they must use it wisely!

    • I’ll go with a sure-fire OC like a Rudolph from Wiscy or Bloomberg from Stanford. I can imagine those two are the only ones who won’t try to sell some bullshit up-tempo, energetic newfangled O with high energy and no running.

  57. With OSU being a public institution are they required to share why GA was allowed out of his contract without paying OSU the $2 mm buyout he should have owed and why he is being paid through the remainder of the year? The noble GA story of letting us out of the $12 mm buyout is not accurate when he chose to resign and we accepted his resignation but did him a favor by calling it mutual. That $2 mm he should have paid could have gone towards paying off the assistants who are on guarantees through 2018. Scott Barnes appears to have willingly gave OSU the shaft on this deal without any explanation.

    • No.

No employer can say anything about a former employee except to confirm the dates of their employment.

If they do say anything, it is because they already plan to go to court to keep from paying severance because they think they have a cause for a complaint.
