Smith’s Staff — Rumors have me Concerned

161

I was high on Smith just a few days ago, but now I am seeing (if the rumors are true) his one glaring flaw: he’s too emotionally tied to OSU.

With GA we had the opposite — he didn’t seem at all invested in the place. Now we get a guy who is so obsessed with OSU that everyone on the staff has to be a Beaver, even if they’re cancers (Riley), unqualified (Bray/Riley/Dan VanDeReit), or under-performed elsewhere (Bray/Riley/Dan VanDeReit) with all the resources and talent one could ask for. Not only that, but those coaches don’t have the disciplined, rigid mindset needed to win. Smith has it, but he’s considering hiring bozos around him because of emotions.

Smith has the traits to lead. Why is it that people don’t self-examine themselves and see the errors of their ways? Why is it that Smith can’t see that having Riley and Bray around is an emotional drain on the players and program; they are symbols of the past. Bias for the known, of course, but what an error. If he only could be objective…I can see how this will end if he doesn’t get some fresh, outside blood into this program.

I went from high on Smith to being very concerned about the rumored supporting staff.

If he hires Riley and Bray he will fail. Heyward and Breckterfield are the only former Beavers who should be considered for openings. Period. I don’t want to hear that Riley would make a neat QB coach, etc. Riley is a program sapping cancer. He’s the prodigal grandpa — “a winning story”…said no one ever. Bray used to be very promising until he hitched his wagon to Riley and lost all his edge in the process. The same will happen to Smith with Riley and Bray around. It’s like zombie football…once Riley bites someone, it spreads. Bray is infected. They’re lingering around the program like predators…trying to bite Smith.

Incestuous, zombie football.

    • If Riley gets hired I’m making a Photoshop of the Prodigal Grandpa Zombie biting every coach on the staff. It will sum up the Smith era in one photo. Just like the Lucy/Charlie Brown image.

  1. Agree 100%. I called it the moment I heard him cry at the press conference. I turned to my fiance and was like, uhhhh he’s actually crying? I then predicted this would not turn out well, he was showing too much emotion, etc. There’s a time and a place for that but it’s not really appropriate at a press conference, especially the very first one.

Oh and here’s some actual footage of OSU if Riley slides on in. Amazing stuff! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGSUU3E9ZoM

    • Unproven. Ball State had 4 wins last year and 2 wins this year. That’s a no for me. Just because you played in the NFL and was an assistant OL coach in the NFL, doesn’t mean it translates to the college level.

  2. Here’s why it’s comical. Many of you including you yourself Angry, bitched about nepotism with GA when he “got the band back together”.

Yet none of you saw this coming when OSU decided to hire an alum with ties to the Riley years? Fucking seriously????

    • When I think of Smith, I think of DE, not Riley…
But yeah, lesson learned: I guess this is why you don’t hire alums. Curious if Frost does the same at Nebraska.

      • I’m the same way. Yes, Smith played for Riley for one year. But the real success was with Erickson. I imagine the real difference is that DE is retired and chilling out in Idaho and Simple Jack just got shit canned and is looking to latch back on the old teat.

        • at his press conference, Smith thanked Riley for being given a chance, but he thanked Dennis for learning how to be competitive. If Smith wants to be successful, that is, competitive, he’ll listen to Erickson. The image you should draw up, Angry, is the old Warner Bros. trope, Dennis on the right shoulder, and Riley on the left.

  3. Someone just tweeted this at me:

What I agree with you on is Riley. The man is an energy sapper. However, at the pep rally Smith said he wouldn’t bring Riley on staff. No more than advising at most.

Advising is still too much. Closest Riley should be allowed to the program is riding his bike past Reser on public roads.

    • That (and the escalating narrative without evidence) is overstating it. The reason Riley deserves not to be on an OSU payroll is because Riley burned that bridge, and there are consequences for burning bridges–the primary one being that you burned that bridge.

That OSU chose to ignore any consequences the first time is why you all are panicking now, I guess. But trust that some boosters would not allow this to happen and were pretty grumbly for the entire Riley2 stint.

      One positive to consider:
If we hire and then fire Riley, we could finally get that satisfaction. Plus, we always seem to start facility upgrades when he leaves.

  4. A good example of letting emotion get in the way of making an objective judgment would be ignoring someone who has expertise in a given area and thinking it would be the end of the world for him to have a diminished role working under a coach who is clearly capable of making his own decisions.

Riley’s complete lack of energy is a problem for a HC because organizations always take on the identity of their leaders. Having MR as QB coach, regardless of whether you object to bringing him
back a third time on principle, would not be the end of the world.

That said, the anti-MR sentiment would probably reach Russia hysteria levels of insanity and make AB even more entertaining. Yet another reason to want MR as QB coach.

    • MR can be a merc. That’s about it. He hasn’t burned the mercenary bridge yet.

If he ever becomes a position or coordinator assistant for anyone, he should be expected to recruit (effectively if not with effort) just like every other position coach.

  5. This whole thread is based on emotion. Having Riley come in as a QB coach as the end of the world and the only qualitative measure of JS is just blind hate for all things Riley.

I would be concerned with Riley as a recruiter, but a cancer to the program is to far.

    • He would be a cancer to the program in that he never again deserves to be employed by the school in any permanent capacity, and banishing morals to some neverland in order to hire him is, in itself, cancerous.

      • I’m going to go out on a limb here and say you Jack were the only person in this thread that hates MR on the basis that he quit. That is a silly argument. I would even still say that MR leaving was a win-win, more win for OSU than Nebraska.

        • It’s not a silly argument. And hate would have zero to do with it, were it involved. If we don’t have basic standards, then we have nothing. People who leave their jobs without notice don’t get to come back. It’s a very basic rule that is a part of a solid foundation. Without it, you have no foundation.

That he’s done it twice doesn’t escape me, either.

  6. Think about this. Nobody can discount Riley’s ability to find and develop quarterbacks. Ditto for Smith. Paired together, this should be one area of strength, which happens to be the most important position on the team. I get the anti-riley sentiment, I feel the same way. But I could handle him as a qb coach and I think he would be successful.

      • If I knew after the fact that, or with a high probability, that he would be successful, yes I would hire him. However, I would not hire him until I found out what his mental or behavioral issues were, e.g., alcoholic, divorce, affair, etc. The Beavers do not have the luxury of being picky on hires as there are simply not a lot of candidates to choose from. If somebody could fill a coaching position and do it well, I do not care about the past, as long as the past was not heinous in nature.

      • Langsdorf was NOT always the OC, Paul Chryst was the OC before him.

It was well-known that MR spent a lot of time working with QB’s and they all credited him first, not DL, for their development.

Langsdorf was merely the MR succession plan that never happened.

  7. blah blah blah. We could hire Bill Fucking Belichik and Angry would find some negative angle. For being a Beaver fan, you sure do bitch a lot.

Angrys opinion and knowledge > ACTUAL college football coaches.

You are basing your opinion of T. Brays ability to coach on how you think his LB played. You take no account to the DL ability to do their job, the secondary to do theirs. In all reality you have no EFFIN clue on how good of coach someone is. Did you even play sports? Or were you the dorky kid that was jealous.

You bitch and complain and spread this crap all over twitter, recruits, parents and administrators see this, and unfortunately the buy into your rhetoric because its the lazy narrative. I think it is funny that you like to bitch about Canzano, and everyone else you dont agree with, on how they are lazy, and its all click bait. LOOK IN THE MIRROR pal.

    Good lord man.

Riley is getting hired, so is bray. If that gets your panties all bunched up, than so be it. Your presences on twitter is actually hurting Oregon State. You dont care, you are so full of yourself and your hot opinions, you actually think OSU is listening to you. Comical at best.

    Go Beavs.

    • Is Riley getting hired?

I see no evidence of that abhorrent rumor being anything but an abhorrent rumor. If that happens, then I will go on a real rampage that is precisely on topic regarding how Riley is not now, nor will he ever be a loyal OSU employee.

Although, you won’t have to hear it from me. There will be some very unhappy boosters if Riley is rehired yet again, despite his continued disloyalty.

If we’re all for hiring quitters, why not also go get GA for DC? It’s happening! Get over it. It’s just a smart thing to do because we have no minimal business standards and even less moral capacity.

I have no problem with Bray.

    • Just imagine the salacious statements that will be made with one Mike Riley on 9’s staff. And that’s on top of the very real ethical failure of allowing him to return. Any losing trend or wacky three yard pass on third or fourth and six…. That weird standing fetal position his QBs do…. Having soft offenses that look great against a soft D but suck against a real D (which we would not have since our O is soft)…. Whole teams quitting in the middle of a game or season….

Why would any person with sense set themselves up with that kind of handicap from the start? Even if none of them are true in the future, Mike Riley brings those and more to your program because he is known to the fans of this program, both as the coach who allowed that and as the coach who quit on OSU… twice.

    • I think my favorite Angry moment has been when he tried to get a press pass from the school, and then when they denied him… he bitched about that. That was comical for sure.

  8. SPEAKING OF RUMORS:
    This from Nigel Burton:
    Nigel Burton? @CoachNBurton

BREAKING: “Willie Taggart is flying to east coast today to meet with FSU officials for 1st time. If meet goes well, UO expects him to accept job. This comes from an extremely reliable source (person who tipped me that WT was getting UO job last year …”

    • Willie told people over the weekend that he was flying to Florida last night to recruit the state.

But pretty much his whole team was saying good-bye to him.

  9. FROM Will’s Dad: “Hey Ole buddies… who knew there were college games played in December? Turns out I…err Will is GOING BOWLING!!! SMU vs Louisiana Tech in the Boca Raton Bowl. Who would have ever thought my…err Will’s college football career would culminate in a prestigious bowl game. Sure hope that fancy ring fits me…. err him.”

  10. Petras taking a visit to Iowa soon. Already took his official to Corvallis so Smith will have to got him and maybe get him back up for an unofficial.

  11. Man, you sound like a nut job. Riley will be living in Corvallis, which likely makes him the resident with the greatest football mind in town. If he’s willing to take a back seat to a young first time head coach, we should be grateful. You don’t stop to think that maybe there actually are some unique challenges to building a successful program in Corvallis. Mike Riley knows what those are. And if we can rely on Riley to focus on one task – such as recruiting a QB, I think we end up with a good one. There isn’t a mother in the country that wouldn’t come away from a meeting with Riley feeling confident her son is in good hands.

I also agree with a previous commenter above that your position on twitter is embarrassing the program.

    • As much as I did not like Riley near his end at OSU, I always liked his QB’s. Think about it. Canfield… Mannion… just to name a couple. I’d be okay with Riley consulting or even coaching our QB’s… heaven knows we need that area fixed. And he might really help in bringing in some really good QB recruits. I don’t think it to be a bad mark against Smith if this happens. As long as Smith gets a good OC and DC I’ll be happy… even if Riley is involved.

And BTW, Smith already spoke with Erickson according to an article and he turned it down. I actually credit Smith for thinking of bringing in someone older he knows that has a lot of experience… most young people see old people as just that… old. It might be wise to consider bringing on old to help the young.

      • Smith was a QB. I think he’s more qualified than Riley to spot a good one.
As Jack noted in a prior thread, Riley struck out on dozens of QBs. The idea he’s good with QBs is a false premise. I used to believe it, too, until Jack drew up that list of misses/choosing the wrong guy. Maybe he can do it again to refresh people.

      • And did you like continually hearing about how it takes 2-3 years for a QB to perform in Riley’s “complex” system? Will it be easy to separate QB evaluation/coaching from system?

Certainly QB eval/development was not MR’s weakest area, but his mere presence is depressing to those who lived through his last several years. There has to be another way for Smith to handle the QB situation. At most, let MR evaluate film and consult with Smith or his yet to be named OC.

Concur with your thoughts on the old helping the young, just not sold on this example, certainly not with a staff position for the old.

        • The problem is everything the old guy touches turns to shit. He just got finished destroying Nebraska, which is really hard to do.

I’d take an old guy hanging around. Just not Riley. That people are okay with this is why we are Oregon State, to be perfectly honest.

        • Nailed it! Spot on OOB. Frustrated the ever loving fuck out of many of us. You could bet it would take 2-3 years after a senior QB ran out of eligibility.

    • Pat Casey is more successful that Mike Riley, and Angry has argued over the years that Riley has his “warts”… so if Angry can complain about having the best coach in college baseball at OSU, he’ll definitely complain about the football coaching staff.

He doesn’t sound like a nut job, he is a nut job.

      • C’mon, man. I’ve disagreed with angry on the nature of Casey’s warts, but surely you see the difference in results and image between Casey and MR.

I submit that complaining about shortcomings is much different than calling for firing/not re-hiring.

        • It’s pointless to even acknowledge A@A. You’ll wind up in an endless circular logic loop. He simply doesn’t have good comprehension or the ability to parse arguments.

Casey does have warts. Whether you want to quantify those by pure results (not winning big in over a decade despite top 10 classes), statistics (e.g. probability of scoring with one out vs two/excessive bunting) or just the eyeball test (Gabe Clark batting 4th vs Pac 12 competition), he has warts.

I will be upset when he retires, though, despite all that. And I’d even want him around as an AD. I could never say any of that about Riley.

        • I definitely see the difference between Casey and Riley. That’s exactly why I wrote that if he can complain about Casey, surely he’ll complain Riley.

  12. Oh god, the Riley apologists are even worse this (3rd!) time around.

“He might just be a QB coach…no big deal.”
Yeah, it is a huge deal…and not a neat one.

    • I was a big Riley fan. I was sad to see him go. I grew up in Corvallis, and lived through 17 years of garbage, and Riley turned it around (started). I served him coffee and breakfast, and he and his family were very nice. All that I need out of the football program is a bowl game every 3 years, for football players to not fuck up off the field, and for a coach who isn’t a douche-bag. Not sure why, but I hated GA, and ignored the program for the past couple of years. Just couldn’t find anything to connect to.

So I’m really excited for JS – I’d be fine to see Riley around campus – in a do no harm role. If he is mentoring, and coaching QBs, I don’t see a lot of downside. If the faults of Riley start to rub off on JS, then JS probably wasn’t going to grow much anyway.

I’ve lurked on this site for 8 years, this is the only place that I get my OSU sports news from. Angry, thanks for hosting, I really like your site.

      • I appreciated your comment, glad you stopped lurking today.
Got to point out that a .500 record results in a bowl game nowadays, I’m not happy with a bowl game every three years. To each his/her/their own.

        • I kind of burnt out as I got older. I used to take it almost too seriously, maybe even personally. Like the fate of the program was somehow tied to my personal life.

Sometimes I can’t tell if my relaxed attitude on Beaver Athletics is real, or if its just some type of coping mechanism – like I’m trying to trick myself into not caring:)

Now I just let fantasy football ruin my weekends.

    • I have an insider now that is affiliated with the athletic dept. I gave him a call this morning after I read this thread. So far he hasn’t heard Rileys name being brought up in any conversation. But he has a lunch meeting with some ranking people in the AD and some donors today and is going to find out. When I told him there was a rumor Riley might be on staff he LOLed then said wait you’re serious? He said all the hires go thru Barnes and Ray, and he was sure Ray wouldn’t let that happen. He told me if he found out anything more he would let me know.

    • agree with Angry. It’s astonishing to see so many commentators here being OK with Riley’s return, in ANY capacity. Angry captured the whole point above: That people would be OK with it is precisely the problem with OSU football. Oneoldbeav and Jack are bringing the voice of reason to this discussion.

      • NiceBeav, yourself, Beavgirl, 03Beav (great post below), and others, too.

It’s like anything in life. You don’t go back and date your HS sweetheart, etc. When a tie is cut, it’s for good reason, and it’s permanent. If there is a rare exception to that you analyze it on a case by case basis and it’s merits. But this isn’t one of them. Riley just got ran out of a top 5 all-time program with all the recruits and resources in the world at his disposal. He sank it to all-time lows, and in the process every player and staffer looked defeated by the end. This is the modern day Riley. So people can wax poetic about serving him breakfast or how he almost got us to 2 Rose Bowls (that was the Pac-10, not the Pac-12, and both were down years for many teams). This league is more competitive than ever. Two schools have been added. That’s 170 extra P5 scholarships. We can’t have Riley around in any capacity. We need people who get the modern game. Sever the tie permanently, find someone better than Riley, and go from there. If J. Smith needs someone old around to bounce ideas off or can’t find someone better than Riley to coach QBs, considering he WAS a QB, then he will fail anyway. But I’d rather see that than him fail with Riley around injecting apathy and (figurative) cancer into the program.

        • Blind hatred is just as bad as blind admiration. Anyone that doesn’t hate MR is an apologist for MR. My opinion is MR had some value, this is an opinion site. I don’t think he is a head coach or even oc at this point in his career. Wrong butt for the seat at Nebraska, but that does not mean he is useless.

You may have a different opinion, but I don’t have a name to call you for that.

          • It’s not hatred. I’m indifferent to him in every regard except OSU.
It’s not blind because it’s root in his destroying two programs. One a historic program. The other ours.

  13. I don’t really get everyone rushing to Mike’s defense. He was 29-33 I his last 5 years here. As much as most don’t want to admit it, he took over what Dennis built up and let it sink over time. Ed & Bobby D didn’t have the balls to fire him when they should have.

Other programs have the old guard hanging around and meddling with thing. Spurrier at Florida, Osborne at Neb, Alvarez at Wisconsin, Fullmer at Tenn, etc. All of those guys are HOF coaches and/or national champs. So, they rightly SHOULD have a say in things, because guess what? They know WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. THEY ARE WINNERS & CHAMPIONS.

Mike is a .500 coach. Sure, let him around to give advice on QB’s once in a while, and yeah, only if he gives some of his money back to OSU football.

Otherwise, we want to win. Let’s take Dennis & Peterson’s advice over mike’s.

What the fuck is beaver nation smoking?

Ps – they all need to quit blaming GA for the downfall of OSU and trying to make Mike look better that he would. GA, or any foul tempered whiskey drinking out of control adulterous coach, would have ruined OSU at any point.

    • I’m not going to rush to his defense.

But I’d take Riley as an Adviser / QB coach. I don’t see what the harm is.

If you think JS is really that impressionable and that some of Riley’s faults will rub off on him, then you certainly don’t want Erickson around.

BTW, I’m certainly a Riley apologist – I think its about the nostalgia – I’ll just be open about it, can’t run from it:)

      • What nostalgia, though? We had 2006 (which started terribly until Moore clicked), 2008, and 2009 (Rodgers bros leading the way and a down conference with only 10 teams in it). That’s not the modern day Pac-12. The coaches in this league are all sharks. 170 fewer scholarship players for us to choose from thanks to expansion, etc. Nostalgia for the Pac-10 Riley is just sad. Look in the mirror and figure this out.

        • My nostalgia comment has more to do with the people that were in my life then, and the time spent with them. There were some bright spots on the field, but I think it has less to do with that.

Nostalgia most certainly is sad – but its also good that the same time.

I’m also not advocating Riley, if we find a better option that is great.

        • Right, it’s not nostalgia. It’s the fact that the guy still has something to offer and there’s a way to tap into that without bringing the whole ship down with the weight of his loathsome apathy. He’d probably be a different person if he wasn’t the HC because he wouldn’t be carrying around the weight of the world.

It’s not that hiring him is any kind of priority. There are plenty of knowledgeable, mediocre football coaches out there. The unforgiving hatred of MR is just so irrational that we need some reason to balance it out.

      • “I don’t see what the harm is” in allowing Riley back, etc. Let me try to explain. If Riley comes back in some capacity, and Jonathan Smith fails to meet the new and much more modest normal post Riley II (get to six wins; a very minor bowl game, and a roll-over year extension to the contract), as opposed to the Dennis Erickson agenda (compete for championships) there is enough legacy support for Riley that we will start to here “let’s just turn it back over to Mike and be done with it.” It’s the same reason I continually argued on these pages that we could not wish Riley well in Nebraska because we’d be constantly told “you ran a great coach out of town; be careful what you wish for.” We see a semblance of that thinking in this very thread!

Now, I will add that if Riley is involved in any paid capacity, consultative or payroll, he will, as Angry posits, make the odds of Smith failing incrementally higher than they otherwise would be because he is a low-energy, and lower than he used to be football IQ guy (ie., the game has passed him by) and why do OSU need that?

        • Come on. I literally just made my first post, so I hate to piss anyone off. But you are not making a lot of sense.

If JS is your guy – great. That means you have confidence in him. He is old enough to resist the powerful influence that is Riley. If you don’t think he can, then he shouldn’t be the coach. And if your still worried about a negative influence, you don’t want Erickson.

There are better options than Riley, we should find one. But lets not act like he is going to taint the program.

Also, lets drop the Erickson + competing for a championship discussion – its been a while.

        • I don’t agree with Jack a lot of the time, maybe even most of the time, but his analysis of the Riley psychosis that many in Beaver nation are afflicted with is, over many years now, his best analysis and contribution to this site.

          • No, you just agree with him on this specific nonsense. But hey whatever mental gymnastics you have to do to rationalize agreeing with an internet troll…

          • Jack makes good points every once in a while. I used to think Riley was good with QBs (that’s the perception, and it seemed true) until he laid out just how bad he is with them.

    • I don’t want Riley back at OSU but I do think Riley deserves some credit for the Fiesta Bowl and for building some decent teams early on in his 2nd stint.

      • how many wins do think the 2000 OSU team would have had under Riley? and I include the talent that Dennis was uniquely able to bring in.

          • that’s correct. It is impossible to know. But counter-factual hypothetical theories are increasingly recognized in historiography as valid pedagogy. Knowing what we now know about Riley’s second tenure (not playing the right guys, poor clock management, blowing games OSU should have won, 9 game win-cap, etc. for short, I posit the following:

            E. Washington, Dennis wins, but Mike loses because, well, it’s a I-AA team.
@New Mexico, Dennis wins, but Mike loses, because it’s an early season road game vs. a (now) Mtn. West team

San Diego State, Dennis wins, Mike wins, students are back on campus
SC, Dennis wins, Mike wins, because Riley gets focused when playing SC at home.
            @Washington, Dennis loses, Mike loses

Stanford, Dennis wins, Mike wins (because Ty Willingham is the opposing coach
@UCLA, Dennis wins, Mike loses because his teams rarely played well there
            WSU, Dennis wins, Mike wins
Cal, Dennis wins, Mike wins because he always beat Cal
Zona, Dennis wins, Mike wins, because Tomey had run out of answers, his last year there
Oregon, Dennis wins, Mike wins, because he could win the Civil war at home early in his second tenure when going up against Bellotti

            Regular season records for 2000:
            Dennis: 10-1, Fiesta Bowl bid
            Mike: 7-4, Sun Bowl bid

    • 1. We had one good year under Erickson. 7, 11, 5, 8 – those are the win totals that we got with Erickson. Quit pretending he accomplished more than he did at OSU.

      2. why would Peterson give Smith advice?

      • I would argue that Riley has, for almost going on 20 years now, reflected int he glory Dennis brought in 2000. I think many of you Riley defenders need to quit pretending RILEY accomplished more than he did at OSU. And don’t give short shrift to Angry’s argument about a conference in a down cycle when Riley was “riding high.” Check the roster of coaches at UW, Zona, WSU, Cal, and Stanford during that era

      • Shall we go back in time to find another head coach who lost only one in four seasons (and not by much), and one of the other three was great?

How about we just go back to the last coach who did have a great season?

  14. I have to agree with Angry on this. The Riley ship sailed LONG ago it’s time to look through the windshield and not the review view mirror. If JS wants to pick up the phone and bounce ideas off Riley or DE I think that would be expected but having Riley on staff is basically saying welcome to Riley 3.0. Enough is enough let’s move forward.

    • I’m good with that as well. I don’t endorse the hiring of MR, I just don’t agree with the world will come to an end and JS is total garbage if Riley was brought in to coach qbs.

  15. I’ve been thinking about the amount of time this is taking and wondering if JS is waiting for other dominoes to fall. Let’s say Willie goes to FSU and takes Leavitt with him. UO goes looking for a new HC. Would we hire Cristobal as OC/OL coach?

  16. My whole point is should we be hitting the fire alarm on a rumor about Riley as a QB coach. Our biggest concern right now is OC and DC and filling those 2 positions. If Riley was being talked up for the OC job I’d be very alarmed.

    • concur. If we can kick up a fuss and keep Smith from hiring Riley it might be one of this site’s greatest contribution to critical thinking about OSU athletics.

    • What I don’t understand is why FSU would want Taggart. Because he’s a great recruiter? Can’t anyone recruit at FSU? His HC record is 47-50…

You’d think FSU could do much better than Taggart.

      • Exactly. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him stay in Eugene.

It’s still a win-win for us, though. If he leaves, it’s further instability down there. If he stays, he’s still just a mediocre coach.

Best case scenario is that this drags on for a while and he finally leaves after all the A-list candidates have jobs.

        • If their current staff stays intact they are going to win a TON of games. Willy is the snake oil salesman that brings in the talent nothing more.

        • The beavs just got bush whacked 69-10 by that “mediocre coach.” It doesn’t matter if he’s mediocre so long a he surrounds himself with excellent assistants, which he has, and bring in top notch recruits which he will do if he stays. I don’t like slick Willie or hi goofy smile but you can’t deny he and his staff turned around that dumpster fire overnight. Let’s hope JS can do the same and rerun the favor next year at resers in the CW.

      • It would be hilarious if FSU doesn’t want Taggart after Oregon pulls their offer of a raise to keep him. Canzano saying Oregon is getting restless with that offer…

  17. I’ve yet to see any evidence that Riley is coming to OSU or has even been contacted at all. This whole thing is hilarious to me. Angry read a comment on some chat board and has absolutely lost his marbles down the rabbit hole. Impressive lunacy, even for him

  18. Reading the recent posts brings back memories of the good(?) old days on pure orange.

Never question the coach’s decisions. If you’re so smart why aren’t you the coach?
Never question the decisions made by the athletic department.
Never question anything about OSU in general.

It’s like the same folks who controlled the conversation on pure orange are trying to make AB their own.

    Thou shall not question!!!!

    Hahahahaha

      • Really? Based on your response I have to assume that you haven’t been reading all the messages. Not that that is a bad thing but it’s something worth pointing out.

FWIW, and it’s only a fwiw, not even deserving caps…. I did post a response to your query “…The real question is: what does MudandSticks think about this?…”.

        • I saw. As expected, we hired the cheapest guy and he was way more expensive than you hoped. At least they didn’t expand the coaching salary pool, they just reapportioned some of GA’s HC money to assistants.

    • Same crap went over to Benny’s House after pure orange fell apart. I had to stop posting and reading over there because the pro-Riley crowd controls that board. How much evidence does one need that he is not a good football coach?

      • @Ughh: Until this message from you I’d never heard of Benny’s House and I’m happy that that’s the case.

Here’s hoping that Benny’s House is still active and those dip-sticks stay over there. :-)

    • I haven’t put the time into figuring out the convoluted press release they put together. They’re restructuring the AD/football organization somehow, but I couldn’t figure out what it’s actually going to look like (and I spent a LOT of my time reading corporate BS).

    • increasingly one has to look at the landscape going forward in this paradigm: is the coaching competition (per school and in the aggregate) getting stronger or weaker vis a vis: OSU. UCLA just got a LOT stronger; ASU weaker (that OSU). so far, we’re even.

  19. John Robinson
    Bobby Bowden
    Mack Brown

Great coaches who had the game pass them by. Riley wasn’t evena great coach. Don’t bring him back in any capacity. For those who say he develops quarterbacks, who has he developed within the past 5 years? Nebby QBs were horrible.

If Riley is brought back that also includes influence from his shitty assistants such as Lang’s, Cav, etc.

      • I tend to think the game has passed Riley by as well, especially at HC and everything that comes with that. I do think that he would add to the program though – in some fashion. But I don’t think he can hang with the speed anymore.

Riley as an adviser / position coach has a much better risk / reward than DE as HC.

        • I would also say that when coach Smith struggles (seeing as how this rebuild will take time), with Riley on staff will the old guard call for Riley to be coach again?

There’s a high risk low reward with having Riley on staff.
          1. He runs the risk of ruining and influencing the new staff in his ways (saving timeouts, passing the ball 90% of the time, not firing staff members)
          2. He’s taken enough fucking money from OSU and it’s donors

    • Sean Mannion. It’s not just the development. It’s spotting a talented QB. You guys have been talking all season about MM – wasn’t he a Riley recruit? There were like 3 Riley QBs that transferred under Andersen and I think we all would have rather had any one of those three over what Andersen had put on the field.

Riley has three guys in the NFL – DA, Moore, Mannion. Canfield was a good QB. Moevao and Vaz were serviceable. Better than Luton or the other guy that came in after Luton went down. Katz is the only one I can think of that was a huge disappointment.

  20. I’m a bit surprised that there have been no assistant coaching hires yet? My memory might be foggy, but it felt like GA already had half of his staff together at this point when he came on. Not that that is a good thing…

    • See my post above about timing and job postings. Posting hasn’t close for any assistant positions.
Only the Director of Football Ops closes today. So we should expect Dan Ven De Reit announced either tonight or tomorrow, and then the others should start becoming official 2 days later. I would guess most names will be leaked a day or 2 in advance.

  21. ASU’s introductory press conference characterized as “bizzare,” by S-I….apparently ASU AD turned it over to Edward’s agent to explain why Edwards was a good hire.

Speculation about Taggert and FSU continues…he’s going to get more money from one of them, and his agent knows just what to ask for, having represented Fisher in his move to aTm. Whatever Fisher got at FSU + a little more, but not more than aTm is paying Fisher is what I’m guessing.

Maybe he also represents a candidate that UO will interview…

    • Bizarre. Imo this goes hand in glove with all the other stuff that’s going on in “amateur” sports; like the bling; the salaries of coaches and AD’s, private jets used for recruiting, etc., etc. And this one: the cost to fans to see a game…

  22. Wow! A lot of these posts are proof of PT Barnum’s a sucker born every minute quote.

Riley basically asked for and got a divorce twice. Now his sugar momma gives him the heave ho and you want to marry him again. The ultimate manifestation of low self esteem/loser mentality.

Remember he would more than likely still be our coach, UGH, if he was bright enough to realize the deficiencies of his staff and make the requested changes. He was more loyal to them than his employer. Perhaps that is an admirable trait, but not for the job title that is measured in wins and losses. He ended up shit canning them anyways when faced with real expectations.
This is a chance for a fresh start. “Just say no” to MR.i

Regarding the emotional presser. Interesting contrast to Frost’s at Neb. He was all business and both my wife and I thought he did not seem happy. Did not crack a smile until late. He seems pretty cold blooded. That worries me on my Gopher half.
