General thread, discuss anything you wish.

Curious if anyone has heard updates on Petras. He got bumped to 4-stars, and is set to visit Iowa. He was solid with the Beavs for a long time, but now sounds like he’s opening up recruitment.

Go Beavs.

  1. I think Petras is still solid but you gotta do your due diligence.

Recruit coming in today, gotta think we’d get some official announcements on assistant coaches.

  2. COACHING STAFF:
    FWIW, Lundeberg tweets:
“The closing date for the OSU assistant coaches job posting has been extended to Friday. It was originally posted with a Dec. 6 (Wednesday) closing date.”

The situation for Hall and Heyward seems intertwined to me. Heyward apparently can’t talk till after their bowl game and it is hard to see where Hall would fit before settling the Heyward question.

Where do we stand re: WR and DL coaches, any solid rumors?

  3. I was going to post this as a reply to the end of the previous thread, therefore it may appear to be a non-sequitur.

Regarding Angry’s posture toward Riley: it’s simple. At the end of his second term Riley had lost his edge, which clearly showed with the product on the field. The team was not well coached in certain areas and I maintain that had Riley stayed, OSU’s record in 2015 would not have varied from what GA brought in: two wins. At that point, with a career trajectory resembling that of Dee Andros, BDC may have had to fire him.

But that’s not the main point. Riley may have been able to rescue the situation at OSU by making changes in his coaching staff, OC, DC, OL coach being prime candidates. But, rather than being loyal to his employer, and making the hard decisions necessary to improve the situation, instead his loyalty to these same assistants took priority. Not coincidentally, he ran into the same problem in Nebraska, except Eichorst, facing the same resistance to change we saw in Corvallis, personally fired Banker and hired Diaco. Riley was merely the messenger, which is why he was forced to call Banker with the bad news. It still wasn’t enough to save the situation. Remarkably enough, with nearly infinitely greater resources, tradition, etc., Riley did worse in Nebraska than he did overall in Corvallis. What more proof does one need that the game passed him by?

Therefore, why should OSU, or its new coach, facing an uphill battle to bring the program back to respectability, attach himself to a diminished talent? Angry is right on this point: if Riley is around, and the uphill slog begins to wear on Beaver Nation, every instinct I have tells me there will be a boomlet to turn the reins over to Riley because, after all, he’s the only person who can win in Corvallis. That scenario, my friends, is simply NOT a risk OSU can afford to run. Smith must rise or fall or his own. In fact, I would extend my argument to say that if Smith is generally successful but with Riley around, the latter will get a lot of the credit, not 9.

That’s the best I can do to explain Angry’s logic model.

    • Good explanation.
It always struck me that Riley was somewhat bi-polar in his loyalties; supported assistants to a fault and, yet, stood idly by when his players received (sometimes season ending) cheap shots.

    • Nothing to explain, Angry is a yuck…

And I’m sure we are going to see a non-stop rant about the inclusion of MR on the staff in attempt to divide the fan base… Don’t be fooled, he’s a yuck plant that has been playing us for all these years!

      • You don’t seem to get it.

Bike Smiley’s presence on the OSU payroll immediately divides the fan base.

Nobody cares what a sports blog rants and raves about. But people see actions for what they are.

Good luck with your fallacy. It probably works on some sports forum where they’re not really concerned with logic.

    • I appreciate your thoughtful response. I agree with the sentiment that MR can no longer can handle a head coaching role. I disagree that makes him unable to teach a qb. Either way, that is just a difference in opinion which is what I would expect. My problem with Angry on this line of him calling JS – Jonathan Riley and poisoning the well. We can all agree or disagree on the decisions that JS is making, but let his success or failure stand based on the results. I still think the narrative that Angry pounds on becomes this site’s reality.

  4. Interesting that he hasn’t been given an official role (beyond AHC) yet. He won’t be QB coach. Maybe they plan to keep him on the defensive side?

I’m not as opposed to him being on staff as many on this site and if its coaching DBs I think it might be okay.

    • Maybe he’s there so 9 can look over his shoulder every time he makes a mistake.

Or maybe he’s there to give advice on whether or not to take the next big shiny object of a hire that comes along.

Maybe he’s there so every other fan base in the country can laugh at us for being the chumps we are.

Maybe he’s there so he can be a scapegoat when things go wrong.

Maybe he’s there because Nebby is totally fine calling that position a good faith effort and will continue to pay his buy-out.

Maybe he’s there because the OSU AD has no basic business sense, ethics or standards.

    • Defensive backs? You mean the most cocky, shit talking, I think I’m Superman position on the field?

You think Mike fucking gum chewing Riley can coach defensive backs? A guy with the personality and drive of Corey Hall can coach D backs. Compare the two. That’s the difference, plain as day.

  5. I said it above, but it bears repeating. If Smith succeeds, Riley will get a lot of the credit. The fact that he hired Riley makes it less likely he will succeed.

  6. Fucking ridiculous. Has not done anything to deserve that role for a P5 team, let alone the team he has already left for better opportunities twice. Very disappointing start to the JS era.

  7. Agreed. I don’t like the AHC title at all. I wouldn’t have been as upset about a QB coach position or something like that but man… AHC!

    • It’s like the old BJ joke:

A: Would you give me a BJ for $10?
      B: No.
A: Would you do it for $10m?
      B: Well… yeah.
      A: Good. Now we’re quibbling.

Let your basic values slide a little, and you realize in the end that you’re just letting your basic values slide. People seem to think basic values aren’t basic values for a reason. It’s as if they think they, of all people, have more control than every person in the history of the world.

At least Lay’s Potato Chips puts it in your face. I bet you can’t eat just one.

    • so the reports of Riley sighting at the football center are true. he was watching film with some of the other new coaches. Eggers had this all lined up; his pipeline has been restored. it’s just pathetic.

      • They’re not true.

        angry made it up.

It’s just a bad dream. I’m going to go home and go to bed, only to wake to an alternate reality where OSU isn’t the biggest chump on earth.

          • Good one, I forgot who you voted for.. Bernie I believe right? That puts you at just a hair above an idiot for not voting for Hillary.

          • I wouldn’t vote for HRC if my life depended on it.

She was never a choice. Dumbshit was obviously never a choice. Gary Johnson was a decent person with really bad macro ideas for an economy (albeit better than Dumbshit’s nihilism). I did vote for Bernie in the primary. I had to register as a Dem to do it, and I did so because I recognized HRC was not a valid choice for anyone who has morals. That she’s only one-thousandth the scum Dumbshit is only makes her comparably valid. That’s still not valid.

          • And before you tell me to lay off the hyperbole, forget it.

Service doesn’t mean I won’t also fight for my own rights. I would die before being made to vote for anyone antithetical to my beliefs.

I guess it’s good I live in a country that allows such freedom… for now. Dumbshit strikes me as a guy who would suspend the Constitution rather than leave office, not that he’s likely to get either choice.

    • Interesting portion of the article:

‘Smith is working to fill the other six coaching positions. Among the candidates he is considering are Trent Bray, the ex-OSU linebacker and assistant coach who coached under Riley at Nebraska the past three seasons; ex-OSU defensive tackle Inoke Breckterfield, who coaches the D-line at Wisconsin; Tim Tibesar, the defensive run game coordinator and outside linebackers coach at Wisconsin, and Wyoming D-coordinator Scottie Hazelton.’

No mention of Heyward or Johnson who have been rumored. Wonder if that is because their UO contracts don’t let them talk to Smith yet or if they are not under consideration? I’d be disappointed if Hayward doesn’t end up on staff. Looks like Hall is out for sure.

  8. At least we will get to keep the “Victory Through Valley in 2016” banner. We have that going for us………what a fucking shit show.

  9. I was hoping that if Riley was rehired, it would be at a much lower level. However, JS is the head coach and Riley can not make any major final decisions-so that is good. Part of Riley’s failure the second time around was due to his shit assistants. There are some positives in this hire. Riley knows Oregon State well and has a lot of connections for recruiting. He might actually make the transition smoother. It is very easy to get caught up in the emotions that this is Riley, part 3. Hopefully, he is not given undo influence and becomes a positive contributor in a much more limited role. I am not crazy about this hire, but in the end, it may become a positive, just like our new head coach.
