Home Football Sacramento State @ Oregon State (2nd Half)

Sacramento State @ Oregon State (2nd Half)

What I see:

Beavs doing a ton of little things wrong. This is on the coaches. Can't have a DT with his head down as the RB runs right past him. Can't have a RT trying to block a LB and letting the DE blow past him and make a tackle for a loss. Can't have a sure interception hit the DB and then he gets flagged for PI. Etc.

Hopefully people now see why I questioned Katz. He just doesn't get it. He has no feel for the game, and his football IQ is low. The only decent unit has been the run D. They've been quick to the edge and cut off some plays.

One more thing: everything we do on offense goes horizontally. I assume this is due to the bad o-line getting no push? Passes are horizontal, RBs run horizontally, etc. Opponents make vertical play look so easy, too.

There is still time to win this game, and unless Sac State scores once more I think the Beavs will find a way to do that. But if Sac State gets another TD this one is over.

I'm hoping for a 20-17 victory at this point. That's best case scenario.

  1. Katz is so slow to recognize coverage, and then his windup is slow. It’s brutal.

Curious to see what Mannion does. Need a spark/change, so this is a good move.

  2. Stupid chopblock. But hey, it’s not like a lineman would KNOW that they cant hit someone in the knees when they’re already blocked…

Mannion makes good decisions, we run the ball more…what’s going on here? Is there a football game on?

  3. If the DBs and S are going to give the WRs ten yard cushions, they might as well just go sit on the sideline and hope Sac State drops 3 straight passes.

  4. I think the bigger picture issue here is that our season is over already. Even if they win this game, it’s just not worth investing emotion or effort in this team. Too many frustrations. A year later and almost nothing has improved, or if it has it’s been negated by a new glaring problem.

  5. Incredible. That wasn’t even the safety’s fault, since that same screen has gone for 10 every time, and he’s had to make the tackle. Where is the corner that should be hitting that WR when he catches it?

  6. Beavs will be the butt of ESPN’s jokes tonight.

I’m going to continue to watch it since I’ve run out of Louis CK material. This is the next best thing.

  7. Petition to tell Bobby D that we refuse to donate unless it goes to a Riley buy-out? I know that Langdouche and Pucker are the problem but he refused to fire them when he needed to. Cut the head off this beast, I figure that Ericson will be available for hire…

  8. Beavers need to be hustling their asses, they aren’t going to get that many more positions. I am starting to think this is just not a well coached team. I watch a lot of college football and they just don’t do the little things fast and smart.

  9. This is a poorly coached team. If you had told me before the game that Agnew would have 118 yds on 18 carries before the 4th quarter. I would be happy and thinking that back-ups would be in for touches. Damn.

  10. Beavers need a three and out defensively. Probably need two more possessions in case they don’t convert a possible two point conversion if they get a stop and a touchdown.

  11. At least they can’t run it straight up, they have to zone read us. They can’t run the clock out, they will have to try to score again to beat us.

  12. why are we rotating so many guys? seems like coaches have no idea who can play after camp. haven’t heard cam collins name all day. seems like same old story, mobile qb, can’t get off field on 3rd down, unimaginative play calling. so bad.

  13. I am starting to believe which is odd because I usually think this team will always find a way to screw it up. They can’t, they would be the laughing stock of the nation.

    • Let’s not go overboard. He has to do it for more than a few plays.

But as I said, he looks poised and scans the whole field, which is a relief. Now do it over and over and over….

  14. This had better be his Serna moment, all I can say.

Still, our offense has marched on them all 2nd half, and theirs has stalled a bit. I feel okay about this, even if we should have won it there.

  15. That was a good point about the DE’s getting cut. They are not going to get sacks on those short drops. They need to stay up and take away the QB’s vision. They have been getting cut all day.

    • Trust me, I was 15 feet from that play, it WAS a horrible no call. Especially considering all the PI calls against the Beavs in the game.

Beavs didn’t earn a win but they certainly didn’t deserve to get screwed either.

Afterwards i/2 the refs hurried into their safe zone while the other half huddled in the endzone. I let all of them know my ‘thoughts’ on their abilities (within reason, hey I was surrounded by kids including my own).

  16. Well the Beavs got what they deserved. Did Sac St. really break the huddle with 12 or was that Parker not knowing the rules? And yes it looked like a push off, but that hardly every gets called.

  17. Why cant we EVER EVER EVER look at the damn ball? Who’s stupid ass strategy is that? Can we write in and make 100 complaints about how insane that is, and how many games it has cost us?

    • The corners are taught by the coaches to not look back at the ball (Dockery complained about that last year, too). I couldn’t agree with you more. The D looks pathetic.
Mannion better be our new starting QB, Katz looked like a kat caught in the headlights.

  18. How come we couldn’t get the homer call from Pac-12 refs? WTF? Home conference refs almost always screw road teams, why can’t it work for us?

  19. Looking forward to Sept, 1. ( 2012 ). Katz may be a better QB, but the offense as a whole seemed to gel better under Mannion. I’m sure Katz will be back next week for the blood letting. Do they actually have a point limit on the scoreboard? And what is Quizz thinking right now? ( Thank you, Thank you, Thank you )

    • Uhhh imo who ever starts at Wisconsin isn’t going to have a lot of self confidence by the end of the game. And they’re also going to get pretty banged up. Not sure I want to see Mannion be tossed to the lions this early in his career. jmo

    • Me. Sad that we are in that state. The basketball program hasn’t made the big dance in 21 years and we are really looking forward to the season. Speaks to how embarrassing this loss is.

      • As poorly as CR managed the games last year I kind of cringe when I think about the upcoming season. Better talent but has the coaching improved? I saw no evidence of that last year.

Come to think of it OSU needs to fire the AD and hire someone who has the balls to fire Riley AND CR. bwdik

  20. Considering we played 1/2 of football, that was a very good comeback.

If you want to blame someone, don’t blame Agnew or Romaine. Katz, the secondary, and the refs blew that game hard.

As did the coaching staff, that continues to run a base 4-3 against running QBs and short-pass offenses, and doesn’t allow corners to look for the ball. Same thing over and over, year after year.

  21. Tyner was at this game…

Not good that he say Agnew go for 200+ and a loss to a D1 team…recruiting could take a hit in the coming weeks.

  22. I cautioned that coaching was going to be a negative factor, just didn’t expect it this game.

Hey, at least its not a non-conference blowout loss on the road to start the seasonn, that’s something different!

    Agnew very encouraging.

  23. I am actually sad more than mad at what I watched today. I might be a little older than some here and this harkens back to a time that I thought was safely in the past.

  24. Probably already been said, but why didn’t sac st get called for excessive celebration on the td in ot. Should have been taken away due to the new rule. Also, were there 12 men on the 2 point?

    • Sadly, I agree. While I loved that he actually changed QBs(I didn’t think he’d have the balls) apparently he can only change players, not coordinators. Langsdorf and Banker are atrocious, have been for 5 years.

We keep them, we keep losing.

  25. Average YPC for SacSt receivers:

    14.8
    14.2
    10.2

Incredible. We might as well rush 9 and see if we can just beat their throws, with numbers like that.

Mannion outplayed Flemming in the 2nd, but he only had one half to create a comeback.

    • Despite everything it should have been a 24-21 win. You have to make that FG and also you have to run in the middle and center it. This coaching staff just does not have the detail that you see from elite staffs. It’s the little things that add up.

  26. Long time troll, new poster. Fucking pathetic. Firebanker.com? That piece of shit scheme we run will not beat anyone. Missed the first half, was it that bad?

      • There were individual positives but they don’t really matter when the team loses. That is small picture mentality. Whoever is pointing to positives is likely a giant loser.

  27. I’ve been in WA. Got the OT score in the car but no final. I was sure the Beavs would pull off an embarrassing win. I can’t believe this. It is now not impossible to predict us losing every game this season.

    I hope Riley was booed.

  28. Well, Kansas St, Texas Tech and Iowa St. are struggling against FCS. I guess I am hoping the Beavs aren’t the only team that is going to lose to a lesser opponent today. That’s all I have left.

  29. Honestly just clean house, is it really that hard to get your team excited for a season opener? We can’t have a head coach that doesn’t even seem mad after embarrassing himself

  30. There were a few positives from our game, and to pretend otherwise is just being bitter.

But none of them really matter because you can’t overcome horrible coaching and scheming. Base 4-3 no matter what, no looking at the ball, and terrible play calls on offense. Just can’t win that way.

    • That might be true, but I temper any positives I can come up with because of the level of the opponent. Can any of these things that we saw in the second have translate against Pac-10 competition? I don’t have any idea at this point.

  31. Angry,
I know you email Bob D a lot, but have you ever brought up the M. Leach scenario? I don’t donate nearly enough to matter, but I feel that there must be something left for us to make our voice matter.

  32. Eastern didn’t quite make despite Bo Levi throwing for about 500 yards. I think Duke might lose to Richmond, so the Beavs won’t be the only FBS to lose to FCS today, but that is not saying much.

  33. To add insult to injury, ESPN ticker is now announcing FCS upsets of FBS teams lumping the Beavs with Richmond’s upset of Duke. Man, can this day get any worse?

  34. It’ll be interesting to see how Mannion does after a week with the 1’s.

Not that I have any hope vs Wisconsin, but the run blocking was decent, and the 4th qtr was presentable other than our worthless dipshit kicker.

  35. Oh DEAR LORD!!! 349 comments?! I was at the game…so going through this would be a waste of time…here is what I saw:

    Coaching staff:

Riley: Great time management! He used his timeouts well.

Langsdorf: Better in the second half of mixing up the plays and using strengths like setting up the run before the pass…in the second half that is! Probably felt that he didn’t need to set the run up to set the pass, but he was wrong. The other thing he did wrong was not running the ball into the center of the field for Romaine to kick the field goal.

Brennan: Great coach as far as I can tell! Blocking by WR’s was outstanding! Great Hire by Riley!

RB coach(name?): We’ll see since Agnew was running against an FCS school and all…

Banker: Needs to teach his D-lineman to FIRE off the ball! I saw Castro stay in his stance 2-3 seconds AFTER the ball was snapped!! We can’t have that against Wisconsin next week. Also, our D-line didn’t try swim moves nor rips…they only do bull rushes!! Banker really needs to go as far as I can tell with technique wise!

Kieth Heyward: Ya, there were TONS of PI’s Sac State should have been called for, but weren’t. Also, the DB’s had balls under thrown and were called for PI because they didn’t look back and when they did look back, the DB’s were called because the Sac St players flopped. So the coaching techniques were fine, it’s just the turning around that needs to be worked on and reading when to turn around.

QB: Ryan Katz(same as he ended the season….poor decision maker! Should NEVER have started this game!)

Sean Mannion: Lights out performance, Stepping up in the pocket when pressure was on, sliding over to the 2 pt conversion to Markus Wheaton after staring all at the right and then quickly releasing to the left. Should have started the game!

    Running Back:

Agnew is FAST! Hits the hole fast, finds the whole quickly and then goes! And as Angry has pointed out, OSU will fumble at RB because we were so used to Quizz, Yve, and Jackson not fumbling. So the fact that Agnew had 1 fumble today early and then he RAN DOWN the player who grabbed the fumble to tackle him was an amazing play and showed heart! Love Agnew! Huge fan!

    Line Play:

MUCH improved! The fact that Agnew got 223 yards rushing against a team that was dominating the O-line most of the game is impressive to me. Run Blocking improved, Pass blocking is in need of a lot of work!

    TE:
My seats are a few seats over from Colby Prince’s sister and I think the Prince family. I found out by a comment I made in regards to Colby Prince dropping a pass over the middle, “He’s a great run blocker, but not that good when it comes to catching.” They didn’t seem to be upset by my comment, seeing how they said, “Ya, he won’t be that way for long.” So I take it he’s working on his hands in catching the ball. So good to hear and I’m hoping to be better acquainted with the Prince family since we’ll be sitting there for the length of our season tickets.

    WR:

Cooks is FAST!! He’s small, but fast!
Wheaton looks good when the QB is good..nothing new.
I will admit I didn’t have my radio to assist me in my further knowledge of following the players more closely, but I’d say we’re doing just fine at WR.

    D-Line:

Mentioned it above, but another touch up is that they are good at stuffing the run. They can’t get a pass rush, but they are quick on the outside to stop the run game. So those teams that are pass happy, we’re in trouble…run teams….we’ll be fine. Need to learn more twists, stunts, and rips/swim moves if we want to actually know where the QB is running/passing. Oh, and they got their hands up on passes. that’s a good sign too!

    LB’s:

FAST! Run stoppers, but not very good in coverage. Still need work on that a little bit. We need to work on blitzing LB’s and knowing when to blitz 1 or 2 guys at a time.

    Safety’s:

Quick, but definitely not Mitch Meeuwsen…meaning, Mitch needs to teach these kids where run plays will occur and when pass plays will occur and where passes will most likely occur…because that’s what Mitch was known for!

    DB’s:

Great pressure on the outside, but still need work.

Special teams other than Romaine….I’m not worried about them…in fact..Hecker was OUTSTANDING! The rugby style is a good method of kick for him.

These comments are of my personal opinion of the positives and negatives of the OSU game against Sac State as far as I an remember after wishing to forget that we actually lost this game…I tried wiping out most of the game, but memory is hard to wipe clean.

Also, the Sac State player pushed off big time on #10 and #10 made sure the ref who stared at the play knew that he made a horrible non call. It was in my endzone on my side. So I saw it clearly the the Sac St. guy pushed the OSU DB down and away and fell backwards to catch the ball. Ya, That was a terrible non call.

  36. Looks like 8-4 Pac-12 teams won today:

    OSU: L
    UCLA: L
    Colordo: L
    Oregon: L

Looks like It’s unsure of how OSU will fare and depends how we bounce back after this loss.

  37. ok so I’ve been reading from your comments that you’re writing off the season already. That’s close to bandwagon fans.the reason I say that is because a true fan will support a team no matter how bad they are in 1 game! 1 game does not define the rest of the season. Manning better start the rest of the season, we better have more smarts of ball placement, we can’t expect the refs to be on our side in any future game. So now we have to try and beat our opponent and the refs. I blame larry scott(commisioner) on the reffing in this game. At least jerry strickerz called penalties on the other team when it came to penalties! This crew called 1 holding penalty on a WR, 2 false starts, and no PI’s on Sac St. That’s ridiculous! I saw at least 5 different Sac St. Guys holding our d-line!

    • I’ve been a Beaver fan since the giant killers year (1967), which means I stuck with them through 28 straight years of losing, so I’m not a “bandwagon” fan and I’m not abandoning them now. But let me tell you something. This loss, against Sacramento State at Reser, is every bit as bad and as embarrassing as any loss the Beavers suffered during those 28 years. Maybe worse. This just sucks in every possible way! And Sac State is more like a high school team when you think about Wisconsin at Wisconsin. The future is bleak.
