Interesting game in that it could be dubbed the "depression bowl". Overcast/rain forecast, Cal with a lame duck head coach, and the Beavs coming off another kick-in-the-sack, season-crushing loss.

Tedford's inability to recruit a D1 QB since Nate Longshore (2007?) is going to cost him his job. Beavers will put the final nail in that coffin tonight, but it's a Pyrrhic victory in that we Beaver fans like having Tedford at Cal.

Great match up for the Beavs. They're healthier than Cal and have mismatches all over the field. My only concern is that they'll be hung-over from last week and/or possibly looking ahead to the Civil War. Also, who knows which Mannion will show up (24TD/26INT career ratio).

I'm thinking something like 27-10, Beavs.

Oh, that would bring the "win cap" theory into play. I know there are like 10 guys here foaming at the mouth right now. There's a crew that hang out here just to point out when I'm wrong (671 posts and counting, some are going to be wrong!). But yeah, they can have their day in the sun. I probably won't respond to any of those posts since it turns the site into a back and forth shit-storm that clogs the comments, and the readers with a quarter brain know what I was getting at with that theory anyway. However, if the Beavs lose this game, it'll be interesting to see if those mouth breathers show up and acknowledge the cap. Something tells me they won't!

  1. Yeah you stupid mouth breathers. Stop clogging up the internet with useless posts. (i’m currently breathing through my nose so this is ok)

Go Beavs! Gonna be a cold, wet, dark evening in Reser. Don’t forget your ponchos! (preferably black)

  2. If you want them to show up and tell you they were wrong, you have to be prepared to do the same, should OSU finish with 9+ wins.

As for today, Cal is junk. They always play UO hard, and they did during the first half of their last game, but we seem to always match up well against them(remember when they were ranked #2, #1 lost earlier that day, then we beat them?)

Not worried at all; we have a really good team, and have lost two games by a combined 7 points while playing and coaching like absolute garbage. And while that could always strike again today, I don’t think it will. My biggest concern, like you said, is Mannion playing like he did in the first few games vs. the last few; if he throws 2-3 picks, we’re going to have a massively difficult time winning.

27-14 sounds good. Hopefully those 2 FGs last week help Lettuce’s confidence.

    • If the theory is that Riley is not capable of winning more than 8 regular season games, it dies forever once he gets 9. But if he only ends up with 8 this year, the debate simply carries over to next season when he has another chance to prove he is capable.

      • As far as I am concerned, the WIN CAP means Riley can have a very good season, but loses focus occasionally, slips on the prep, play calling, team motivation, or whatever, and so is incapable of getting to the top, even momentarily. No BCS, ever, means win-cap, to me.

So IMO he needs to win out, or the win cap applies.

    • I was in Iraq during that game when Cal’s fans started chanting “we’re #1” after the number 1 team lost. It was one of the only games our TV in the MWR tent got that day. I was so pumped I was able to watch us win.

  3. It looks like everyone is discussing he players as usual. I for one look at the source, Mike Riley. Has he prepared the team, game plan and play calling simplistic and predictable? Give me all the minus marks you want, I don’t give a rats ass. Riley is responsible for getting wins and the buck stops with him.

Game against Cal is not a gimmie………anything could happen. I believe turnovers and defense again will be major factors.

Oh, by the way, “it never rains at Autzen Stadium”……what a bunch of idiots……nothing worse than a wet duck.

    Mailmen suck eggs!

      • I’ve tried to recall if I’ve ever seen a comment about Riley that didn’t begin with how nice he is. The next part usually refers to OSU’s clean program (not dissing that), then some Corvallis native stuff and finally reference to his being a good coach. The closest I can remember a fellow coach questioning Riley publicly was last year agains Utah – but then that might have been directed at Langsdorf.

        • Urban Meyer questioned him during the Wisconsin game.

Rick Neuheisel has, too, on the Pac-12 network (I think about timeouts, I forget).

Generally coaches don’t question one another in public so even three is a lot, but that’s just in the past couple years, there might be more.

          • Your examples are from coaches as commentators, so it doesn’t really count. It’s been fun watching the two douches Bielema and Meyer, though.

  4. Nate Longshore? Cal hasn’t had a good qb since aaron rodgers. Kevin Riley and Longshore were mediocre at best. Beavs win easy tonight. The ship at Cal has already sunk.

    • Wasn’t Longshore 5-0 and had Cal #1 before he got hurt, or am I mixing up QBs/years?

I remember him being effective and looking legit early on. Then never the same after injury. I think? I don’t know, I don’t follow Cal closely.

      • yeah that’s correct. then kevin riley came in against osu that season and didnt throw the ball away thinking cal had timeouts. would’ve been number 1 if they had won that game.

  5. I think your summary is pretty much right.

Beavers should win, but I wouldn’t look for a blow-out by any means. Turnovers will be key, as usual. OSU “O” has to stay on the field. OSU 24-17.

  6. I think winning the turnover battle is important. But more important is winning the points off turnover, last week even after forcing 4 turnovers we only converted that into 3 points.

  7. UCLA’s been putting up some decent points the last month, maybe they’ll make for an entertaining PAC-12 championship game in Eugene? Glad it looks like it won’t be USC again.

    • Barkley is the typical USC QB…looks the part, and that’s it.

Regarding the post above, Stanford has a better chance with this new QB running around, but I don’t see how their D stops the Ducks. I’d imagine 45-28 or something like that. Problem is if you’re Stanford and punt the game is essentially over.

  8. I’m going with 27-20 Beavers. OSU will botch some red zone chances with penalties, play calling. Cal will hit a big play and the Beavers will have to score a TD with under 3 minutes to go to finally put it away. Cal score meaningless TD with 20 seconds to play. Riley says in the postgame he probably should have ran the ball more, again.

  9. Word is riley drained some long island iced teas, listened to some of that “new kid rock “cowboy” track and is ready to kick some rear tonight.

  10. We’ve know all along that this team lacks depth in so many areas, with a 4 TD lead how soon do ya pull most of the first string to avoid any more injuries?

      • Yes, IMO that is the number one guy to pull out, the rest of the D except possibly for Poyer maybe should stay especially with the rotation normally used. Not sure if Poyer still has effects from a couple weeks ago.

On the O side: Woods, probably Cooks could use rest. I wonder about Isaac with his history of hip problems, if he was pulled in favor of Roman S. would that put the QB at increased risk? I suppose Mannion needs another quarter to get into game shape for the future

  11. A sloppy, penalty ridden game. I wanted a blowout so as to rest several guys but the staff didn’t take advantage of that opportunity and now I wonder if, with all the slop and players dinged, this may not have turned out to be the best way of preparing for next week.

      • Yeah I think Cooks got his bell rung. I’d think he is ready to play saturday, but could miss mst of the week of practice. Not sure about Anderson. At least Enger probably back.

        • Other casualties: Andrews and Romaine.
I think we are gonna hear a lot of talk about “next year” in the coming weeks. Hopefully the staff uses the added practice time before the bowl.
