Mike Riley Entertains Wisconsin

193

This story came out of nowhere, but it has legs. Wisconsin was reportedly in Corvallis interviewing Riley.

Having been to Madison, it's probably the one place for which I can picture Riley leaving. I truly hope they hire him, but knowing BDC, he'll panic and sign him for another 20 years @ 10 mil per.

Regarding a replacement, I like Lance Leopold of Wisconsin-Whitewater. It's a DIII school, but Leopold has built a dynasty, and Oregon State needs to think outside the box.

PS. For those who believe Riley is loyal, above money, and loves Corvallis, he's now danced with ASU, USC, and Wisconsin. Not to mention him bolting for the Chargers. I think it would be apropos if mister nice guy broke the apologists' hearts.

    • I actually mentioned him last year. Not sure he’s ideal, but he’s a good option. I also like Troy Calhoun a lot–he’d probably be my second choice, and he’s from Oregon. Solich is a top 5 choice.

      • Mr Fucking Howdy Doody? I don’t mind Calhoun either but since he’s an AFA alum not sure we could pry him away. Someone else mentioned Gary Anderson from Utah State. Don’t know much about him so will have to research. I just found it interesting that Solich has only had 2 losing seasons in 14 years as a head coach.

        • Calhoun is an Air Force grad but an Oregon native.
Cal interviewed him (I think?) …or they were interested, so he’s probably open to the Pac-12.

Utah State became respectable (they were HORRIBLE) under Anderson, but I don’t follow them enough to know if he lucked out and got some key players or what.

          • Yeah, I could get onboard with Calhoun. Never had a losing season in 6 years and they’ve gone to a bowl game each year he’s been there. I seriously doubt AFA is a very easy place to recruit to. Wonder what he could do with some better athletes. And you are correct, he was born in McMinnville. I cheated and looked it up.

            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troy_Calhoun

Still don’t know enough about Andersen but USU has gotten better under his watch. 4 years and went from 4 wins his first 2 years to 7 last year and 10 this year. Color me intrigued at least.

          • Holy crap, what is all of this talk about option minded head coaches? Where the hell is Pettibonehead when we need him? I guess Solich has actually come into the modern age as Ohio runs a spread.

Gary Andersen is the real deal he’s done what nobody else has been able to do at Utah St. since Merlin Olson was on their defensive line. Spent time as Whittingham’s D-Coordinator at Utah. Did decent as the HC at Southern Utah also. Just read an article where he’s turning down offers to interview left and right though because he loves where he is.

          • Solich is 68 and is a drunk. Could not recruit worth a damn at Nebraska coming off one off the most dominating runs in history. No thanks.

  1. thought Riley’s buyout was over 14 million but found no evidence to support this. This was after he signed the contract extension after 2010.

  2. Don’t know if that kind of airport flight stuff can be faked. If it’s true, it’s almost sinister how well Riley has played the “aw shucks, I’m so appreciative to be back” angle over the years (especially during his 8-16 run) to keep the media and BDC in his back pocket.

As we can see, that type of mediocrity has gotten a lot of coaches kicked to the curb in the recent years and Riley knows it. Crazy like a fox, just wish that kind of cunning and gamesmanship made it on to the field more often!

By the way, Dennis Ericksen’s RV is passing through the San Fernando Valley as we speak picking up some key JC players for next year. BCS bowl here we come!

  3. This is what I woke up to? If this is flirtation to get more money it is beyond f’ing stupid.
We finally have some juice to close out a very good recruiting class and this would kill the momentum by throwing doubt into the minds of the good players we are now in the mix for.
Can’t believe he would do this. OSU(the) with Urban is going to be a bigger obstacle than Chip at Nike. It will be playing for second place every year. Butthead left for Arkansas to get out of Barry Alvarez’s shadow. Why would MR want to work for a legendary coach who built the program/ brand?
That being said, CFB coaches do dumb things all the time so nothing would surprise me.

    • Cliff apparently hasn’t even read the Oregonian yet either. I love how Riley’s mug and comments are all over the place with Alamo Bowl crap and then this rumor pops up and he’s suddenly “unavailable” for comment. I don’t think Clliff is that close to Riley anyway, it seems like Eggers over at the Portland Tribune gets better stories.

In some ways I could care less if Riley stays or goes but I personally think it’s an asshole move on his part to even speak with Wisky and that’s just based on his blathering about this being his last job crap over the years. Like Angry said it’s going to be more interesting to see how the apologists spin this one. College football coaching is a cutthroat business no matter who the players are.

  4. One interesting thing about this is that it starts one to think of replacements and the current head coaches’ “coaching tree.” Chryst is the only name that comes to mind other than Burton. For as long as MR has been a HC, that is very surprising. Is it an indictment of the quality of his assistant coaches or his good but not great success? As a comparison check out the Hayden Fry tree. Simply amazing.

  5. Turned down USC but now considering UW? I know USC was facing sanctions but I still don’t see it. The only way I see us losing Riley is if he retires or dies.

  6. Funny that Riley would leave when Kelly is likely to leave, and Ducks are likely to start to become beatable.

I like the Leopold idea, and he could probably be hired without breaking the bank because its a step up for him. I can’t see BDC being that creative though, I agree it’d more likely be Burton or an existing assistant.

  7. What’s better than a lifetime contract? Doubling your salary under said contract.

MR: Bob, I know I have a lifetime contract but I feel left out on the big money. I see all these inferior coaches getting big money all the while I’m stuck in a place that’s a recruiting hellhole and everybody knows I get more out of less than any other coach.
BDC: I realize that Mike. You need to get Wisconsin to fly out here and stage an interview so I can get the base all excited so I can give you a raise. With the last two years forgotten it will be like taking candy from a baby.

  8. Angry, you used to email BDC, right? Did you ever point him towards Leopold? He’s a great candidate, and could probably come aboard at a reasonable (pac-12) price. However, I have to wonder if BDC has ever looked around, or that deep (DIII), particularly when he’s so comfortable with Riley.

  9. Not going to happen. How do you ride your bike to work when its -10 for a high. He has history with SC and could of possibly built a power house, given the talent that drops into their laps. But then again would he want to ride his bike through Watts? He has never gotten into a BCS game and has a life time contract. So how does he improve the bottom line? Maye get some credible offers for BDC to up the anty. Maybe he is also looking at negotiating more for his assistants. Also where else is he going to have the same job security? He could double his pay at Whisky and be out of work in 2 years.

    • The student section yelling “fuck you, eat shit” at each other in the third quarter is the major attraction. He has been trying to get this tradition going at Reser for years and the frustration has finally reached the inevitable boiling point.

  10. I see no problem with Riley listening to offers. Also, who says Wisc is even offering?
There’s no way he’s leaving, he’ll tell the recruits and their parents the same. He’s probably just allowing Wisconsin to visit as a professional courtesy.
Now if Riley is actively flying to Madison and other cities on his own dime then it should raise a few eyebrows. Otherwise, he’s just doing the professional thing. Remember that he is also tight with the AFCA and considers fellow head coaches friendly colleagues.
By him allowing Wisc to spend some time and money interviewing him he is effectively raising the bar for that position which will help some other fellow coach. He also stands to gain love from Beaver fans and possibly a raise/consideration from BDC like he did with the USC deal.

  11. @LindsayRae19

I’m with @CliffGT on all this: Riley to Wisconsin isn’t happening. DC Mark Banker to Wisconsin? Now there’s a possibility …

    Our prayers have been answered!!

    • Banker goes and the DB coach becomes the next defensive coordinator and we hire the LB coach full time. I like it. Can Wisconsin take Langsdorf too?

    • Wisconsin this year was one of Banker’s better games, so I could see how they might be interested. He actually had the Beavs playing pretty well there last year on defense, despite the circumstances (backwards punt for bad field position, no offensive drives over 3 plays for, leaving defense on the field the entire game)

  12. My hat is in so many rings that I’ve run out of hats. It hasn’t been widely reported but I’ve come in second for about five of the major openings and turned down another three. Everyone knows that my dream job was and always will be OSU!

I have unfinished business in Corvallis plus I’ll work for peanuts. If BDC would lift the restraining order I would be happy to swing by the athletic department for a quick interview. JB

  13. Mike isn’t going anywhere. Where do B.S. rumors like this get started? Go to some practices and see how happy the guy looks, run into him in the community, talk to him, and see how happy the guy is. You can walk into the football offices any time and he will greet you and visit with you. Corvallis is a terrific place to be. He is being successful, is treated with respect here in Corvallis, is from Corvallis, and makes a ton of dough.

Zero chance he goes to Wisconsin or anywhere else, he’s been there done all that.

  14. You clamor and clamor for Riley to get fired, and when news breaks that he might be leaving after a 9-3 season (what suckers Wisconsin are for wanting to hire such a bad coach, right?), you suggest replacing him with a DIII coach whose name you can’t even spell correctly. Well done.

      • Chipper was D2 and he was hired as an OC, not a head coach (as you point out). Chipper is also the exception that proves the rule in many ways – there are few examples of lower tier coaches that burst on to the scene the way he did.

        • I think what’s important is to have a clear vision and the ability to communicate it, strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Kelly has all of that, and that is what makes him such an effective coach, not just his offensive scheme. If Leopold(sp?) has those attributes, I think he could be successful with a Beavers roster that has more legitimate DI talent and depth than its had in a while (on the O side of the ball). The next issue would be his ability to recruit and take the program to the next level.

  15. Riley would defiantly drop a few notches in my book and I would lose a lot of respect for him if he decided to take this job. The leaving for the San Diego gig I get that, head coaching in the NFL is something only few coaches get to do. But since he has return, all you hear about is “I want this to be my last job” or “I am happy here” . I just have a difficult time seeing this happening, the program seems to have some nice momentum going on the field and recruiting. Hopefully they take Banker or even Langsdorf….

  16. Riley was interviewed on 1080thefan yesterday prior to all the Wisconsin news, and everything he said about recruiting and kids’ parents wanting to know if a coach will stick around with a program lead me to think he’s not going anywhere. Why would he bother bringing this all up if he was in the middle of negotiations with another team. Would make him look like a gosh darn liar!

He even says he’s under contract through 2020. Start listening around the 7:00 mark.

    http://audio.1080thefan.com/a/68199920/mike-riley-oregon-state-head-football-coach.htm

Banker interviewing with Wisconsin makes more sense actually, considering his name has been made available the last couple off seasons.

  17. Another official visit this weekend.

    Greg Biggins ?@GregBiggins

Fresno (Calif.) Edison QB Khari McGee will take an official visit to #OregonState this weekend

  18. Cliff Kirkpatrick ?@CliffGT

I’m confirming soon. RT @schadjoeMike Riley says he “has not interviewed, isn’t scheduled to interview and has no interest in Wisconsin.”

  19. Brayden Kearsley55 ?@BK55_ERA

Off to my first Official Visit to get all these tragic things happening in the world off my mind.. Hope it goes well up there! #Huskies????????

  20. I’m amazed at how many people are taking a report from CBS sports seriously. I guess they don’t have much of a reputation with me to believe a rumor like this.

Sure I believe that Wisconsin would want to talk to Riley. But I also believe that Riley wouldn’t really entertain the offer.

Here’s why, he’s been on many of the candidates lists when jobs become open.

He could have taken the USC job years ago and didn’t. Why would he all of a sudden take the Wisconsin job? He was rumored to be on the UW list before Sarkisian got hired. Didn’t take that one either. He’s had his pick in recent years but has chosen to stay.

I think it just comes down to who he is. He regretted burning OSU for the NFL. To do it again, I don’t think he could live with himself.

    • Perhaps he was just f’ing with Angry? He might have secret evil side to him. BDC does look a lot like Dr. Evil. He is probably reading the site and laughing at us. “Glass ceiling my ass mother f’ers!”

  21. @CliffGT
Mike Riley laughed at the idea him going to Wisconsin. He has no interest, no offer and heard from a second party.

Looks like the paid sites ploy to drum up business and their “sources” were not accurate.

  22. The internet makes following teams much more interesting when some clown with a blog can write “news” based his 2 reliable sources.

  23. Some dude from College Football News just said on a SIRIUS radio show that Mike Riley has no interest, so Wisky is going back to Al Golden with a better offer.

  24. So said blog clown wants to claim the story so he has some scoop that Riley is interviewing, then when he’s not, suddenly it’s “On Thursday night, CBS Sports reported Riley was “set to interview” with Wisconsin.”

CBS Sports reported it, or did you? (that’s directed to Jeremy Fowler, in case he’s reading)

      • It appears the only thing ligit was a phone call from Wiscy, and not any scheduling of an interview. What, Riley scheduled it and then cancelled it? Machado got duped. This is why more credible people in the press wait things out.

    • The first step is putting out a feeler to see if a coach is interested. Based on what Riley said about a phone call being made that sure sounds like a feeler to me.

“It sounds like pretty wild speculation to me” instead of something more direct like “that’s total bull shit”.

At about 2 minutes into the interview I couldn’t hear exactly what was asked but it sounded like Riley was asked if there was any offer which could make him leave and he got evasive.

Also, I thought it was interesting that Riley said he sets in his office and wonders about leaving and says that he can’t imagine that.

      • He has been offered an interview with Wisconsin. He turned it down. End of story.

Part of the reason coaches are always so guarded when asked these sorts of questions is that all conversations between an AD and a coach is off the record. he can’t say ‘That’s bullshit’ or ‘Yeah, they offered me.’ even if he wanted to.

  25. A 46-47 year old DIII coach jumping from Stevens Point to Corvallis as the head man has no chance, nada, nunca, to suceed. That only makes sense in fantasy football. Fun to speculate but he would have no more chance of suceeding than Coach Lad, he of the 330 wins and 25 defeats. This isn’t apples and oranges, it’s more like apples and elephants. If you guys will recall, Chip made a jump from east coast to west coast as a coordinator and later to head coach. A jump from DIII to DI in a different part of the country would totally wipe out any recruiting channels and obliterate any relationships with the high school and jc coaching fraternity on the west coast. You have got to be kidding that any existing DI Coordinator or high level assistant would want to come and work under a DIII guy for peanuts. I am the last guy in the world to be worried about image. But this image would never be successful on the field. At the very least, Rueck was familiar with the state of Oregon. He has done a great job. But he only got the offer because OS had few if any viable alternatives for a sport where a crowd of 2000 is a rousing success. If you are going to dance on someone’s grave before they are dead, at least admit that your playboy fantasy pin up is a cartoon.

  26. This thread is funny.

Riley was never leaving. I think only the Bama job might tempt him, and I don’t think he’ll even take that if ever offered again.

He’s a good coach. What keeps him from being great is his loyalty to a system too complex for a transient roster, loyalty to certain assistants who have either peaked or suffer because of the complexity of said system as well… and being soft on the recruiting trail (obviously there is dead weight among the assistants here as well).

    He’s a great football mind. He’s a great person. He’s a great friend. He’s a good football coach. He’s also honest, and he’s said he’s going nowhere.

    I believe him.

Leipold was never suggested to come to OSU as a head coach. I think he would have moderate success, maybe great success. But he would still need to acclimate tp the D1 level. And that would take a couple years. Look at Chippy and how he had no idea (he did, but bear with me) he was just breaking recruiting rules left and right while on the trail. Leipold runs a similar offense on the D3 level, but he powers his offense to its strengths instead of ditzing around the edges with a partial playbook. He makes you beat him. And if he loses it’s not because his team screwed the pooch and lost. It’s because you beat him. It’s more like Marty ball than the current quasi-West Coast offense we run. I guess if we really wanted to stick with the hybrid West Coast system we could look at someone like Craig Bohl. But I prefer Marty ball.

I’m surprised this rumor even made it past daybreak. I have a feeling it was just too much fun for many on this thread to pass up. And boy was it fun watching the righteous squirm.

But really… who thought he was leaving?

    • Not I, and a harmless little diversion during a majorly F’d up day…

Maybe the only issue I have is in the last sentence of Angry’s original post. Seems like a twist of the knife…not sure if I’m an apologist, things could be worse.

      • A friend of mine calls that last line bait. It’s a signal to all that this is just plain fun stuff, and those who take it seriously are missing out on the fun… to the delight of those who are having fun.

Yes… it was one seriously fucked up day. It’s my daughter’s fifth b’day, and I can’t stop thinking how wonderful she and my boy are. I was literally in tears when they showed photos of the one young woman who was seemingly pleading in terror with a cop for info then screaming in pain in the next pic.

I’m welling up now thinking about it.

Diversions are good sometimes I guess. Thanks for reminding me of the downers. Makes me want to think it’s only occasional in this world.

  27. Jack, My point was to minimize how trivial the banter was about pre-selecting D3 coaches. As a father who lost his only daughter at 21, I’m sorry if I tried to balance a bit of reality versus hysterical internet coaching speculations.

Today affected me more than I thought it would~guess you don’t need to be a psych major to know why. Your kids are wonderful…enjoy the days you have together, and I mean that most sincerely.

I needed the diversion also. Peace out~

    • That was a tongue in cheek thanks. I’m not gonna get down on anyone for bringing reality to the table.

It was just poignant for me when I’m sitting here looking at parents who lost their kids and my girl with her b’day.

Not related… i have a really good friend who lost his wife and two little kids to a drunk driver long ago. And my wife is a graduate of and knows many people involved with Thurston HS (Kip Kinkel). She knew a couple of the kids who died there as well as the two who finally tackled that messed up individual. Almost fifteen years have passed, and nobody forgets that. Hell… they don’t forget about this Diane Downs shit either.

I know it happens on a daily basis in degrees around the world. But sometimes it hits home.

      • Homefry-This was a fucked up day,and I’m sorry to hear about your daughter bro.

Jack- the comparisons to the Thurston shooting is scary. FWIW I was working/friends with Jake Ryker’s godfather and that was a fucked up morning too. Jake made a good jarhead and I like to tell myself that I was a bad influence on him.

        • My wife’s family is huge in Boy Scouts, and they all went to Thurston. So they all knew Jake and Josh and others because of that. The Honor Medal ceremony was a big big deal for the scouting community and the five kids who got it.

Yeah… Jake was a hitchhiker. He should have just become a CB instead… you know… join a real branch of the military. ;)

          • Yes… Sea Bee.

CB (Construction Battallion) is the official rate designation. The Marines have a designation of Combat Engineer which is similar. But they’re all gun-toting killing machines. So it really doesn’t count.

And don’t think that’s a slight. I think sometimes only Navy personnel are the only people who know the true nature of a hitchhiker… outside jarheads themselves. They are killing machines. They know this, and they do it.

But, by all means, make fun of them as a singular mind. A real Marine is impervious to such criticism.

Family get togethers over all the years have been really fun with my mother’s family being hugely Navy and my father’s family being hugely Marines (funny since my mom’s father was also a Marine). If there’s one thing I can tell you about either, it’s that my family can drink a lot and have a raucous time with each other.

And I’ll tell you right now that American sentiment toward vets sucks in a hard way. People love to pretend they’re armchair patriots, but they would hate life if they had to sacrifice themselves. I guess this could lead into a rant about wars waged which nobody pays any attention. But do I need to do that? Does the nightly news open with our service members being in a conflict overseas?

Or does it have Nike and Wal Mart commercials mixed in with silly stories?

          • Entertaining side story

The friend I was working with at the time is best friends with Rob, Jake and Josh’s Dad. Rob was still active duty Navy when all this went down. Clinton was president and had a big thing at the white house for the Thurston victims/survivors. When Everett heard they were going to meet Clinton he told Rob to say “hi” for him.

So in the middle of this big deal media day Rob’s in his dress uniform and Clinton’s making his way down the line shaking hands and shmoozing and when he gets to Rob he shakes hands, good to meet you blah blah blah Rob gives his him “Hey, Everett says hi”….

            ….blank stare….”uh,OK”…moves along….

  28. “We saw it in the media reporting a blog reporting a tweet by a twit so it must be true.”

Let’s keep the story going as long as we can so we can feel important and perhaps even relevant. You’ve been Riley-rolled.

Been a wonderful aside to keep my spirits up after today’s news. Thanks folks! I needed the pick-me-up after learning of a real loss – an old friend’s nephew in Newtown.

  29. Who is going to the Alamo Bowl? I don’t know if this has been asked, but I will be there and if anyone else going wants to meet I think it would be a good thing to do. I look forward to my first trip to San Antonio.

    • I will be there. Only other time was doing a combat casualty/ desert survival class back in ’88.
After not showering and eating MRE’s for a week it seemed like paradise. Riverwalk is cool.

Should have an Angrybeavs meet up. I won’t be there until the morning of the game, Going to the Gopher game the night before in Houston. A unique chance for a two-fer.

          • Damn typo, forgot to log in. When do they appear on a future Gopher schedule or have they sworn off scheduling the Dakota directional schools because of too many traumatizing losses

          • Funny story…

I moved from North Dakota to Texas for college, and I got a Texas driver’s license. When I finally got to the clerk, he told me initially that he couldn’t transfer my license because, “We can only do that for licenses issued in the United States.”

After he talked to his manager (yes, it went that far), I got my license. I also joked (a joke on my part, but seemingly real to the others) with the people in line about herds of buffalo and renegade “Indians’ roaming the streets of Fargo on any given day.

I have complete faith in the intelligence of the masses.

    • couldn’t get this posted in the recruiting forum so doing it here

      @Ldelrio12
Walking On at the University of Alabama #RollTide #blessed

Again we can’t close, I don’t think this is a big blow because he had never committed to us, but it leaves me thinking we won’t close on the other high profile players like Hunt, Moore, and Ross.

      @GregBiggins
In somewhat of a surprise, Valor Christian (Colo) QB Luke Del Rio will walk on at #Alabam over taking a scholarship at #OregonState

      @GregBiggins
“I wasn’t going to base my decision solely on having a scholarship. Athletically, socially, and academically, #Alabama was best fit for me”

      ?@GregBiggins
“I was leaning heavily to Oregon State until my mom made me take the visit to Alabama and I realized this was best fit for me” Luke Del Rio

      • I would think that finances were the least of his concerns. My guess would be that the competition has been assessed and the kid feels that he can practice his way into the mix as a redshirt freshmen after McCarron graduates next year.

          • Haha. That has to be it. Damn woman. The closing statement is right on. We miss on many more than we get. They have one of the top rated QB’s already in this class and I’m sure they will get one every year. Odds are he rides the pine for a couple years and then transfers seeking playing time.
They should keep after him until the ink is dry on the LOI.

      • Yeah, for him having a scholarship isn’t a big deal. He can certainly pay his way through.

My guess is over the top factor is the girls. Best fit meaning, there are way more football groupies here.

        • I don’t know how much tuition will cost his daddy at Alabama, but as a parent I think this is a horrible decision. What are you teaching your child?
I say a full ride at almost any AQ school should trump paying for tuition regardless how wealthy Dad is. Especially when he’s getting offers from coaches that consistantly put players in the NFL. Jack, you dropped the ball on this one. You’re raising a spoiled brat who may be sucking at your teat for life.
Even if I was a billionaire I still want my child to earn his way and respect the value of a dollar.

  30. Watching an ESPN bowl preview show. Lots of love for the Beavs from Bellioti and company. I was a little surprised at how confident they are for a Beaver victory. I think there’s a general sense of backlash regarding Texas football (Longhorn Network, etc) and that Mack Brown has “peaked”. I still think Texas have some pretty damn good athletes and then there is always “Luck O” the Beavs” Anyway, very cool to have the Beavs playing a prominent legacy program.

    • Sure, playing a “prominent legacy program” is cool. However, it isn’t worth much if the Beavs perform like they did in the CW (still can’t get over the total f’up on the kick return game).

With Bowl related activities it isn’t easy to keep the team isolated or focused prior to the game, add that to Luck ‘O the Beavs and I’m not going to get overconfident about this game and hope the team/staff don’t either.

Regardless of the opponent it’s all about focus. If the team can finally win one on the big stage it really does set up great possibilities for ’13.

  31. Things have gone stale on the Alamo Bowl thread, so here is Wilner’s take:

OREGON STATE (minus-1) vs. TEXAS (Alamo, Dec. 29): Two teams with questions at quarterback. The Beavers had a better season and are, by a significant margin, the better-coached team. But Texas has more overall talent. Pick: Texas.

    • Can’t argue with the eval. If we can run to keep them honest and the QB’s don’t have an INT fest, we can win. The two missing D linemen could really hurt us.

      • The loss of two D linemen could be mitigated if the offensive play calling and game situation allows plenty of rushes. TOP in that case would let the remaining D-linemen get some rest. Still, Ru F. will be missed.

If Wilner is correct in his evaluation of the coaching mismatch then we’ll no doubt see a rested D-line with Woods and Ward putting up over 180 yds rushing leading to success in the air as well. Ready to bet the farm??

        • No. MR will probably throw it 98% of the time and then talk afterwords how they needed to run the ball more. Agree that TOP will be everything.

        • Was it made officiall that they’re out for the bowl game? I thought he said “as of now they’re suspended” “but I need all the details first.”

  32. Regarding a meetup: I hope to make it to Corvallis next fall for a game. That’s the plan, we’ll see how things go. If it happens I’ll make a meetup thread, but I’m not doing it for FB and BG, you guys can use the forums for that!

  33. “PS. For those who believe Riley is loyal, above money, and loves Corvallis, he’s now danced with ASU, USC, and Wisconsin. Not to mention him bolting for the Chargers. I think it would be apropos if mister nice guy broke the apologists’ hearts”

    mmmmm apology? suuuuper hater.

  34. Ahhh… the righteous remain blind.

I’d love to get in a discussion about religion with some of these lazy true believers. They wouldn’t stick around for long, but it would be fun.

      • Just imagine them as unknowing Bokononists having full faith in their fomas.

They’re not nearly that harmless, and they don’t pretend to understand their stupidity even for the sake of grace. But it is what it is, and it’s mostly funny.

        • Oh… and learn when not to laugh out loud… or even make funny faces. They prey on that sort of act for their own faux martyrdom… well… self-righteous victimization. They are, after all, the greatest victims the world has ever known.

          • Jesus’ martyrdom = their righteous victimization… 2000 years later.

I can’t say I’m always happy. I have bad days also. One day, a woman knocked on my door peddling faux Jesus stuff with her two little girls. I answered the door and talked to her as I always do. She asked me, “Do you know what the Bible says about prayer?”

I was in a pissy mood, and I said, “Yes, I know that Jesus told us all to go to our closets and repeat the only prayer God recognizes, the Lord’s Prayer.”

She was surprised to say the least. I was shocked at my bluntness and her reaction, so it was a pretty easy exchange of her propaganda for her absence. But I still took the time to take her little propaganda flier and bounce it off the Bible itself. It’s a good reference for these items. But there’s context to be had.

There’s a lot more to be said about this.

          • I found living in Utah for nearly 15 years it was just easier to answer the door with a cigar in my mouth and a Rolling Rock in my hand when the elders came knocking, now when they asked if they could join me that presented a whole new reality.

    • Jack, i’m your huckleberry. It is always interesting to me when this topic of religion comes up on here. The funny part is that usually somewhere in the “discussion” there are a few names thrown out with a few easy slurs about bigotry or simple minded-ness is thrown towards those “true believers”.

I don’t understand why there is such anger that seems to come out when religion pops into the cycle for topics. If you and the others truly believe that “religion” is for the simple minded, why wouldn’t you just have pity or some other emotion other than pure hatred? Look, I’m not one to say that organized religion hasn’t been abused and used to abuse many over the centuries. But, to totally dismiss anyone that believes in something because others that have expressed those beliefs have been bad is arbitrary. If you we’re to do that with a race you would be branded a racist. If you were to do that with a gender you would be a sexist. If you were to do that with a lifestyle choice you would be a bigot. But, if you do it with Christians, you are just further evolved.

My opinion is that the reason that religion causes such a vitriol response in people is that they are worried that they could be wrong. What if you are wrong, Jack? I’m not wanting an argument with you. I’m quite confident that you have never lost an argument and I don’t think matters of the soul are changed much by arguing anyway.

      • Well said, and i’m not a religious man. But why don’t you guys just exchange e-mails so when my fellow angry beavs and I are sifting through beaver sports talk and information we don’t have to see an argument about religion. I think others on this blog feel the same way. I feel like i’m watching an interview with Mike Riley after a game and one reporter keeps asking him questions about his religion and why he believes.

        • I had no intention of getting into a religious debate or making a mess for Beaver sports fans to sift through on this site. I just didn’t feel like letting Jack go off on my belief system, as he tends to do every so often, without at least a little opposition. I actually really like many of Jack’s posts, when he stays on Beaver related stuff, but sometimes his Cliff Claven type posts of things non-sports related are a bit over the top and I think he needs to be reminded that while I know he fully believes what he is saying it is just his opinion and others on here are entitled to their opinions as well.

Consider this closed from me, back to Beaver news. Is there any?

      • Maybe because Religion is responsible for some of the most heinous actions taken by humanity.

Kinda hard to be easy on religion. It is really a pox on humanity. I speak of organized religion, of course. If you alone want to believe in something its fine with me. But we need a ban on organized religion.

        • I really did mean it that I was done on the subject above, but I guess I’m just in one of those moods that I just can’t let stuff go. Religion is no more responsible for heinous actions than are guns. People are responsible for actions, nobody can make me do anything I don’t want to do. As I said above, bad people have done bad things and used their religion to justify it. But holding all organized religion accountable for the actions of a few, would be like saying that mustaches on men should be banned because Hitler had a mustache.

Just remember, Religion doesn’t kill people, People kill people.

Sorry sports fans, I’m really done this time.

        • That’s a lie.

Religion is not to blame for anything man does.

          Man is to blame.

Religion is simply a tool… a con to appease the masses which powerful men use… and don’t believe themselves.

      • “I’m quite confident that you have never lost an argument and I don’t think matters of the soul are changed much by arguing anyway.”

I share your opinions, Sparky, well said. Thanks.

      • You guys are right, this isn’t the place for this discussion. I just was asking for advice from someone. Guess I should email in private if it’s that important to me.
Buuuuuuut since we’re already knee deep…
Sparky, race, gender, and homosexuality aren’t choices, your beliefs are. I do get pissy sometimes instead of the simple pity you say we should exhibit because believers run this country and this world. Regardless of facts or unproven or even laughable beliefs, believers are the vast majority. Doesn’t mean I hate believers, but you can understand frustration right?

Ok now, I swear to God I’m dropping this. Besides, Jack has entire book that he is just putting his finishing touches on in response to all this.

      • Do you believe you’ve said anything?

Do I have hate and anger in my post? Or is it amusement?

Can true thoughts about others’ imaginations be considered equal to bigotry?

Did you choose your race or gender or sexuality?

Are you the greatest victim ever?

You sure seem to be… and I didn’t even say anything about martyrdom in previous posts.

        Did I?

Come on. I know the Bible inside and out. I know about seven different versions thus. I only keep the JB for reference. But I know the comic book nature and lunacy of the KJV and the sterility of the NAV (or the TMB if you want the most sterile).

And I just have to say… WTF man? It’s a great story. But it’s not the stuff of legend…

… until you start learning the context.

        Mary was a Nazarene.

That pretty much lays the groundwork for the gospels. For a couple hundred years before Mary was born, the Nazarenes segmented “virgins” and foresaw “one” who would be a “messiah” and “walk on water” and “raise the dead” and “whatever.”

For centuries this sect did this.

One great man in 200 years comes along, and we got ourselves a religion.

How do Mormons live with themselves and their context?

        Ooooh… zinger!

    • I think that’s it, but we are after several others. We had Kyle Peko (DL) in this weekend, and we had three in during the civil war weekend I think.

  35. Coffee is for closers, and we ain’t drinking very much lately…

    ?@GregBiggins
Vista Murrieta (Calif.) DB Treshon Broughton loved his visit to #OregonState but said he’s not ready to pull the trigger just yet

  36. For good measure, we might as well throw this nugget out there.

If we don’t go shopping, the Longhorns will win.

I know. It sounds about as stupid as it did when idiot boy said it about terrorism. But it is a nugget for all time to experience.

My friends and family members died because of idiot boy and his cronies. I don’t have any hate for religions. I do have hate for idiot boy.

    • It will take a generation to undo the destruction caused by “idiot boy.” I’m not sure that the lessons have been learned. It seems a portion of this country still thinks those were the good old days. JB

  37. QB recruiting is starting to get thin. I have seen Thomas Sperbeck (son of Sac State coach?) play in person against a team with several D1 recruited players, mostly BYU. Not sure if his quarterbacking is PAC 12 level. But boy what a player. He is really fast having caught several guys from behind, is very competitive busting tackles/ throwing short and deep to mediocre receivers and was the best guy on the field.
