Home Football Dylan Wynn–Bust?

Dylan Wynn–Bust?

74

I feel like this guy gets a free pass.

Wynn came in highly touted by recruiting services, and I had him as the 7th best prospect of the 2011 class.

He had one sack this year, and one sack last year. Two sacks over two years from the starting DE. Last year we all wrote it off as him being undersized and green. Despite gaining size, his production and disruption have been just as poor this year. So what is the verdict? Is this guy a bust? I have a hard time labeling him that at this point since there are players from the 2011 class who haven't even seen the field yet, and will make impacts down the line. Is Wynn a victim of high expectations?

I'm not sure, but I do know OSU needs better production from the second "bookend".

  1. Also, if anyone has a Blitz membership they can let me use email me!
There are a few rumors I want to check. Those jerks banned me years ago, and the guy who would send me updates disappeared.

  2. I have been thinking the same thing. Stat-wise I think he is a bust, but I would need to watch some games and focus more on him, because he could be doing some very valuable things that won’t show up in the stat book. For sure need more production from him moving forward, but he still has 2 seasons left, a lot can change in that time so I’m going to hold back the “bust” label for now.

  3. I think you’re reaching on this one. You have a DE who played DT for 30% of all snaps, and he still made more tackles than Skoki made. On top of that, he was the first to disrupt plays in the backfield on many plays. Could he have made more TFL’s? Sure. But he set up many TFL’s for others just by throwing himself into the play despite being doubled on many plays.

    I’ll take 50 tackles from a DE… let alone a soph DE.

    • I’ll second that. This topic doesn’t need to be discussed.

Played a hell of a game OSU. Don’t hang your heads at all. I was beyond impressed #BeaverNation
      and…
      Oregon State>>>>>>>>> Texas

Doesn’t look like this guy has lost interest in the program because of the bowl game.

      • I think this guy would be a huge get.

He’s lightning quick, has great top end speed and tremendous hands. I think he’s a bigger, faster and better Sammie Stroughter. Which I guess makes him Chad Johnson.

    • I don’t think I’m reaching. I did put a question mark and said I’m not labeling him a bust yet.

Though, a lot of fans feel this way. I’ve seen many “where is Wynn?” comments throughout the year. And he isn’t producing in any noticeable way. So if you want to make a case for Wynn it’s intangibles like “he gets in the backfield first”…that’s great, but finish the play. I see the other DE doing that. OSU’s defense got gutted the second half of the year so I think it’s fair to ask more than 1 sack from a DE.

      • Except that he moved inside or simply was rotated out for passing downs in favor of Fernando and Fifita. It’s hard to get sacks when you’re the disruptor first and resting when the bonus plays come your way.

Many of the plays he did not finish as TFL’s were finished as TFL’s by others. And many of those plays were him being grabbed and punched by double teams while he was trying to make the TFL.

This criticism would be more on point if it was directed at Skoki.

And I would argue against that angle also.

  4. To me hes like a Kevin Frahm type of guy. High energy/emotional leader but not big or strong enough for DT and not quick enough to effectively rush the passer. I still think he brings a lot to the table as a run-stopping D-end though and that’s the kind of stuff that goes unnoticed on the stat sheet. What OSU really needs is a speed rusher to come in for him on passing downs.

I also think he plays a huge role in the weight room pushing the other players, I don’t really have anything to base this on but he just looks like one of those guys that goes nuts in the weight room.

        • Frahm wasn’t THAT bad. When he was a DE he certainly wasn’t spectacular but he did end up with more sacks than Wynn did this year. Then he was put in a poor situation when the coaching staff moved him to DT because they couldn’t recruit an interior lineman to save their lives. I think Frahm was unfairly dubbed a terrible player. A good player? Maybe not, but if he stayed at DE he could have been.

          • Hold on. Frahm was not a good DE. If I remember correctly, he was gifted the starting spot, got a bunch of stats against 1AA competition, then got benched because he couldn’t produce beyond that.

He was like Wynn in that he was weirdly competitive in both the weight room and on the field. But he had none of Wynn’s abilities on the field. He was more of a neat story than anything… a good kid with a weird streak who overcame his own shortcomings to be a neat story.

          • “He was like Wynn in that he was weirdly competitive in both the weight room and on the field.”

Right. That’s why I said Wynn was a Frahm type.

  5. Wynn just isn’t much of a pass rusher. Folks were high on him last season because he recovered a bunch of fumbles, but his production was about the same this year. He had 44 tackles as a frosh, 49 this year. 5.5 TFL last year to 2 this year. Well within the margin of error for both.

Crichton went from 74 to 44 tackles in the same period, which to me indicates a different strategy was employed at the DE positions – probably some by us and some from opponents game planning to avoid the ends. I noticed Wynn rotating in at DT more this year than last. He also dropped into coverage more that I can recall from last year to help compensate for MLB’s inability to cover.

Anyway, I think it’s harsh to suggest he may be a bust, since I believe his actual position should be MLB. If we can find another pass rushing DE – Austin Hooper for example, he’ll play up to his potential and destroy fools at MLB.

    • He would make an excellent MLB… especially tight to the line. He has the ability to push or read coverage. That was something noticeable in the 4th quarter. It looked like UT finally understood that Feti couldn’t cover the middle, and they went to town.

      • Being able to play coverage as a linebacker in college is becoming more and more important, like Jack pointed out once Texas discovered Feti couldn’t cover it was over. From what I see Wynn has all of the tools to be a great run stuffing middle linebacker. Coverage is the one thing that concerns me, he has been playing with a hand on the ground probably for most of his life.

  6. Jack has this one pegged. Crichton did not have many sacks this year. Does that mean he is a bust ? They both could benefit by occasionally lining up on the same side of the field and/or by a lb/de type of guy who could switch back and forth to execute stunts on their respective sides.

  7. To be fair to Angy, he say’s he’s not sure. I’d agree he gets somewhat of a pass because he’s a high energy emotional guy.

I think his role was diversified this year, and the entire D line could have been better at producing sacks.

He’s not a bust. I think he and Chricton will benefit from more prototype DTs that are incoming in this next class.

I agree it would be a blast to watch Wynn and MLB. Seems like that would allow Banker more creativity and options.

    • I think he could slot into the Unga role and play the position better. He’s plenty quick and reacts very well to stuff the run. I doubt he’d be very good in coverage, but frankly, I don’t see that player on our current roster and the MLB shouldn’t really have to cover that much next year. Would he get burnt by guys like Mariota? Probably. But probably less than Skotte or whatever other options we have at MLB next year.

If we’d run more 3-4, I think he’s a perfect fit in the middle.

  8. It’s interesting that during the shitty season Wynn’s name was consistently being brought up by the announcers and then this year I hardly ever heard his name called during games. He put on weight for this year, right? Any possibility he is a step slower? For the record, I don’t think he’s a bust yet.

  9. Thanks for correcting me on Crichton sacks. But his overall number of tackles was down. They both can and should play most downs. But there needs to be some level of unpredictability in where and how they lineup and rush. Wynn is a plus plus disrupter and could easily line up in a number of places and positions. Others have pointed out that commonly cited statistics do not necessarily measure every important event. The number of recruiting stars did not make Jordan Poyer a great player. The number of sacks or lack there of does not mean that Wynn is not an extrenely valuable guy.

  10. This was the year to shine in the PAC 12. All games except 1 were winnable. And even that one was conceivable. I do not think that this will happen again soon due to limited coaching change and disruption.

    • Do you really think SC and Colorado will be significantly better? Kiffin makes Riley look like Bill Parcells and Colorado is in disarray it’s going to take that new coach three years.

    • Really? I think next year lines up better. USC will be down with Barkley out. Oregon will be down with Kelly leaving for the NFL and sanctions hopefully will keep them out of the postseason. Our non-conference schedule is pretty easy compared to 2012. Arizona is replacing Scott at QB. Mora is being rumored today in some NFL coaching searches, meaning he could be out already. Stanford is a home game.

Our O-line and RB situation should be better. DB and DT’s are coming in from Juco to replace our major holes on defense from graduation. Rueben Robinson is no longer on the team. Need to replace Wheaton’s production as well as figure out the QB situation.

I really think the next 2 years are going to be our best shots at returning to a BCS Bowl. Especially if Oregon isn’t allowed to compete in the post season. This season, as poorly as the bowl ended, turned out much better than I expected given the schedule.

  11. I love Wynn’s attitude and while he hasn’t produced the stats, you never see us calling his name for missed tackles or over running his penetration either. He has said that he knows he needs continual improvement and uses Crichton as motivation. Humble, motivated, no quit motor… I’ll give him another year before I start griping.

I think I’m one of the last beaver fans in SA, gonna go support the local tourist economy one last night. Though this town seems to have stopped investing in its appearance since I was here last 4-5 years ago.

  12. Agree on Wynn. His role seems more similar to a 3 4 end, but he is disruptive on first 2 downs and had quite a few qb pressures if not sacks. Any rumors out on recruiting? What do folks see as our primary remaining needs? After bad start, our specialists performed well, feel good about those 3.

  13. Don’t mean to go OT here:
LJ Moore its between us and Arizona St, he visits Tempe next weekend and then will decide.

Keishawn Bierria 3star LB has a visit planned (Jan 11th), but sounds like he is waiting on an USC offer.

    • Looks like we are out of it on John Ross:
Wide receiver John Ross (Long Beach, Calif./Jordan) is expected to choose between Oregon, UCLA and Washington. Tight end Thomas Duarte (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) surprised everyone with the news that his decision is looming. Duarte will announce between his four finalists: Notre Dame, Oregon, UCLA and Washington.

      • You’d have to be crazy to commit to Oregon as a high profile WR. Their primary job is to block, and to push the envelope with defense holding.

Running routes and catching footballs…that’s what the RBs and TEs are for.

          • The point is that WRs are an afterthought in Chip’s offense. And college glory notwithstanding, a high profile WR probably has justifiable NFL aspirations for the long term. Playing for Oregon is a great way to tank those dreams.

          • Then why is he in such demand on the professional level? He turned down Tampa Bay last year. I guess owners ( who may hire Chip) of NFL football teams have no professional aspirations for their teams.

          • I’m not sure what you’re getting at here…

Chip has an extremely effective offense. He is a brilliant offensive mind who will likely be highly successful at the NFL level. Just as likely, his NFL offense will probably be very different from his college offense.

Chip’s offense is extremely run-centric, and even in the passing game the running backs play a dominant role. Receivers do not play a large role (except in blocking as stated above), and are unlikely to garner the production and numbers needed to springboard an NFL career.

          • I have no idea why anyone would think Kelly would run the same offense in the NFL. The first thing he has to do is destroy 70% of his play book just to make all his formations legal under NFL rules. I’m sure he’ll still retain some read option. But I would expect the NFL Chipster to run more of an Air Raid or Run and Shoot with the same tempo and one-word terminology with which he organizes his read option.

In fact, I think if there’s anyone who can take an Air Raid and add a functional running game to it, it might be him.

  14. Wynn should be moved to MLB, he’s to slow at DE to be effective at pass rushing. I think he has the make up to be outstanding in the middle of the defense and he loves to hit people.

  15. I agree that Wynn should slim down and concentrate on speed, agility and conditioning then make the move to MLB.

Gabe Miller obviously should have done same. Both were/are victims of recruiting shortcomings.

  16. I won’t call him a bust but given last year this year seems like a side step vs a step forward we were expecting. I don’t think he was nearly as disruptive this year but I just might only be remembering the fumble recoveries from last year and giving him more credit for making plays then he deserved.

  17. That is really big of people to say that they will label one of the better players on the Beavers, “not a bust”. How generous we are at the New Year. Do you guys even watch where the Beavers line him up on the field and have any idea what he is tasked to do? He plays de and dt. He is most often assigned containment and is tasked with chasing the play down the line. Here is a tip. Most qbs are right handed and they naturally roll to the right. Wynn’s job (when lining up at de) is to not let the qb or running back get outside. That is why he was taught to line up 2-3 yards outside the tackle or end. The job of Crichton is to crash from the backside and blindspot and get to the qb.

  18. Riley should start working him in as the FB on some of the power running plays. He’d be just as fast and probably better at blocking than Anderson/York/Balfour and I doubt that he’d get tired…

  19. It’d be nice to have 2 running backs who are Texas Offensive Players of the year in their respective divisions. Mattison looks to be nervous about PT with our current stable, but with his measurables he shouldn’t be. Would be great to have an athletic bruiser. Perfect compliment/change of pace to the guys we’ve got.

    • Though I really question the level of competition faced (based on limited video), I am hopeful he will commit to OSU. He could certainly wonder about PT, but if he’s a competitor, and he wants the best school, it seems to me OSU makes the logical choice over reported offers from Houston and Texas San Antonio.

Meanwhile, UO has Tyner and Dontre Wilson, both ranked in the top 10 in the nation by Scout, listed as verbals. I would think that if Kelly moves to the NFL quickly, Tyner might reconsider that verbal. I have questions about his attitude (prima donna), but Wheaton/Cooks reminded us this year how valuable pure speed is, and it’d be great to have Tyner’s speed out of the backfield and have him contribute to an emerging track program.

      • I wouldn’t worry as much about attitude as I would durability. He’s had quite a few injury problems including concussion(?’s) as a high schooler who’s so fast he doesn’t really get hit. Osu’s current offense wouldnt exactly play to his strengths. Don’t get me wrong, would be ecstatic if he switched as that would be 2 straight years getting the top in state recruit (thank you joe s). And our football 4×1 would be fun to watch.

        • With the current depth, he’d be fine. I know its unrealistic, , but consider if Kelly were to leave Oregon, some kind of sanctions loom, and OSU were to land one of Tyner’s teammates and lineman (Kearsly?) who could help sway him. He’d have an emerging, talented offensive line to run behind.

      • You all make a good case, but I just don’t think it would happen. If Tyner does decommit I could see him going to Ucla, or some place like that. I really don’t think OSU has a chance on him. I don’t even think Kelly leaving he still doesn’t go to UO. But I could see him wanting to go to Ucla and play football and run track in the nice weather, and I think I heard his girlfriend is going there (but that is just speculation). It would be really NICE to be wrong on this, though.

  20. Cooks may be fast, but his value is only marginally related to speed. He has great hands, good body contol and will jump to catch. He also has football smarts. Regarding speed, Frank Gore not so much, Marshawn Lynch not so much, the rookie sensation from DC Redskins not so much, the rookie sensation from Tampa not so much. I would not turn speed away, but the current OS backs are good enough to play for a natuional champion caliber team. I was wrong about Anderson. He is good. OS still does not have a smash mouth fb or te. And they do not have a mlb (really need 2} that can run from sideline to sideline all day and night long. Speed yes but more important super human conditioning. If Wynn is too slow for DE (and I do not think this to be true), he would also be too slow for mlb (which I think is true). Teams today will set up in crazy formations and try to isolate speed guys on all linebackers. Watch the 49ers. They are not afraid to match up their two linebackers on pass coverage against anyone. They never come out of the game and just run and run and run. It was no secret all year long that while Feti was a decent run stopper, he was a big liability against passes between the hash marks. Go back and watch games like BYU and Stanford and Cal. This by far is where OS needs more speed. The outside guys are ok, speed wise but pose little threat as blitzers.

  21. If you just look at the huge increase of muscle from last year to this year you can see why only one sack. Wynn has absolutely no flexibility in his hips. At 6’2 and probably a true 265 he can barely get his hips turned to get around any Left Tackle let alone a TE. His arms are short and he is trying to get to the corner of a LT that is 3-4inches taller. Crichton on the other hand is heavier yet runs more fluid and can engage a Tackle without his arms already being locked up.. Wynn’s aggressive nature is great for football but not for that position. He would not have to weight 250 or 245 to play MLB. I think everyone would be amazed at how well he could move by trimming 20 or more pounds. Joel Skotte might be the future at MLB but with under 20 snaps all year in the middle I think Wynn is a better option. OSU is a team that developes talent because very seldom are their Freshman ready to play on defense. I think it all comes down to flexibility and not speed with Wynn and are the coaches willing to make the changes necessary to improving the defense.

    • I think he thinks the same way as you dog (about the flexibility, not the LB) — Wynn has been quoted as saying he is going to be focusing this offseason on flexibility and speed….he is going to be working with Brian on a 1-to-1 basis in order to improve this…he wants to be an every down D-end….we need him to be an every down D-end.
