Home Football Does a Win Versus Washington Change Anything?

Does a Win Versus Washington Change Anything?

101

The reason I ask is fans seemed to chill out with the “Fire Bob D” talk after the basketball team upset Maryland.

I can see things getting very quiet if Riley beats Washington.

Now, I do think this is normal…fans being fans. And I don’t think it looks good to call for a guy’s head after a win. BUT, I am looking big picture at this point. The patterns are defined, engrained, and I am not falling for Lucy’s football ever again. I’m looking for consistency in myself and my views while remaining objective. So to me, a win versus Washington falls into “bull run in a bear market” camp. I can acknowledge it as a positive thing, but only within the larger downward/stagnant framework.

So, to the loyal AB fanbase, I ask you: does a win change anything? (And If your answer is “no”, my follow-up question would be: is there any number of wins that would change your perception?).

  1. Bob D needs to retire now. It’s the best thing for everyone.

The only win that will change things this year is an absolute beat down of Oregon. That’ll bring back the donors.

  2. Yes,a win changes things, but only if its followed the next week with another win.

I’m really looking forward to next year’s team. I kindof hope they finish this season poorly at this point, in order to be mad going into the offseason. The coaches and players need to be hungry for success next year, and the schedule is perfect for them to do some damage (as long as they practice tackling during fall camp)

  3. The Fire Booby D crowd is alive and well and quietly growing in influence. The Maryland win was good and the team plays inspired with the first family as audience. It is a kinda like a Robin Hood archery contest with the king and princess in attendance. A likely time for a peak performance when you have the motivation to play inspired. Those that feel strongly OSU would be much better off with a new AD and are plain tired of DeCareLess are smart enough to know when to push and when to take a moment to let it breathe.

Washington won’t change anything because we are 98% likely to lose to Oregon as awful as that sounds. Riley is nowhere close and the playcalling with over reliance on passing shows how he is just wildly taking stabs that are appear ever more desperate against better teams. Also way too many mistakes finishing on real opportunities.

BDC is responsible for the seemingly neverending contract with Riley that essentially prevents any repurcussions from having poor seasons. Already guranteed for another decade Riley can live with 5-7 or 6-6 because that extra year he is likely to get tbis year for a horrendous finish is over a decade out. It is like playing with Monopoly money when half a generation away from today. It is hard to accept this as our actual shitty fate without choice because it simply is not logical.

The Fire BDC movement though is happening and those disgruntled with his vision are burgeoning. Heck I figure we have 90% of the new students enrolling this fall on our side. Young students are not interested in old fogeys and a beyond tired status quo. They want and expect to leave their own mark as any generation would and should. That is why very long deals are not appropriate except in the rarest of circumstances where a younger generation wants it because Riley and BDC are literally stealing from younger generations when they insist on sticking around so much longer than what is typical at other universities. This can’t go on for too long without the generations being stolen from becoming increasingly resentful of it. Thus without some very good results soon the backlash against BDC will only intensify.

    • You don’t know hoops had a peak performance until they have follow up games. This is what I was talking about in the thread the other day. People are so committed to the idea of firing BDC that it then clouds their perception of the team. BDC sucks, so the team has to suck. I guess that’s easier than thinking BDC sucks but the team is pretty good, because that might mean there’s less of a chance of BDC leaving.

      • I understand your concern about altering reality to justify BDC dismissal, but I am equally concerned over the alteration of reality on the heels of nothing more than neat outcomes. So instead I look to the quality of the body of work performed by BDC and I find lazy, low brow, and non intellectual work.

  4. Didn’t change anything for me, except that it’s a nice win. Doesn’t erase Coppin State, Sac State, EWU, the usual *pbbbt*s from basketball and football, and the entrenchment of mediocrity.

    Please go, Bob :(

Then again, will Ray hire someone better? Ugh. [apathy starting to set in]

  5. Is there really much difference in a 6-6 or 7-5 season on the college football landscape? To me, a win or loss against the Huskies only matters if we think the result will bring positive changes for the long term. I don’t know that this one game will have that kind of impact. I guess we aren’t considering Angry’s question in the framework of the Ducks game because a win there seems like such an impossibility?

Given MR’s contract parameters, we already know that any bowl game is considered a success by BDC, so as weird as it sounds, if we want change, then we don’t want the team to make it to minor bowl games moving forward. But then we also already know that two unsuccessful seasons brought very little change to the program, so I think we’re kind of screwed either way for the near future unless BDC goes and new expectations are set. Hell, we don’t even know what expectations BDC has for the basketball program, do we?

    • I think a win against UW means we won’t go to the New Mexico bowl but I don’t know that for sure.

San Diego State is projected to be play in the NM Bowl by every projection I have seen. I would rather us play someone new. Not a pig picture reason, but still a valid reason imo.

I think most people would agree beating the Ducks is a pipe dream. Maybe since Mariota is not 100% we stand a better chance.

But still, we have not beat the Ducks since 2007 and that was when Dennis Dixon, Brady Leaf, and Cody Kempt had been injured leaving their 4th QB Justin Roper to play…

    • I would love love to beat the ducks. But I fail to see the validity in the connection between simply winning or losing this week vs next weeks Perfomance. Especially with the shortened week and all.

Now should the Beavs manage to win the next two games, it in no way interferes with my conclusion that BDC is the root of all struggles. He has missed fired in too many ways to be made up for with a couple nice wins. I do not insist that Riley and CR are the problems, I see them as average coaches being poorly directed by their boss. I also suspect an increasing delegation of AD duties to the AD staff.

  6. A win, in and of itself, changes nothing for me. A win against the Huskies is not at all out of the realm of possibility, after all, much of the success of the Lucy ploy is because she occasionally lets CB kick the ball. In fact, a win is somewhat likely given Riley’s record of coming up with a good surprise now and then.

For me, “it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game”. I’ll acknowledge a real change if the team establishes a pattern of focus and passion, if Riley demonstrates intensity, manages the clock, and enforces high standards for his staff and players. This takes more than one victory, it requires a pattern over more than a season. Not at all saying a win each week is required, just consistent effort and demonstrated good sense. A victory this week could, at most, only show the beginnings of a change. For quite awhile that Lucy thing still will lurk.

OT: If you can get past some of the Parker banter, there is a decent discussion with Pat Casey from the JoeBeav Show. Casey gives input on the Sean Parker hit last year and retaliation in general. Around the 48 minute point.

  7. Beating UW means nothing. It only reinforces the fact that Riley can beat the crappy teams and will lose the meaningful games save a career saving win once in a while. What once was an upward trending program has topped out. Riley has to see that something must be done but can’t react because he’s too loyal to his buddies.

    • this is why, in my opinion, Riley was so dejected after the debacle in the desert. He now sees what the future looks like for him and his relationship with coaching staff and prospects going forward. He knows that with the “Riley standard of performance”– 7 regular season wins and bowl victory–he could ride this forever. 8 regular season wins is, I believe, his goal for each season; enough to get to the “good bowl game” he always talks about. That’s out the window now. 7 wins is problematic, especially if Price plays. I don’t think even Riley thinks he has
      a chance vs. UO.

      • I think his goal is a Rose Bowl win next year. He may have looked at the ASU game as a test of sorts for the likelihood of that happening.

        • Lol ….. seriously? That’s a Riley GOAL? You gotta be kidding. Even Riley isnt that addle headed. He didnt win a SINGLE tough game this season. Yes, he made some of them LOOK tough, by having no defense. He used to come up with one or two of those a year. I think even he can see that such isnt in him anymore.

We hoped the 3-9 season was an abberation, esp after the subsequent what, 9-5, right? And getting to about 9-5 was once a Riley signature. Now I think the 9-5 will be the abberation.

Like Angry once said, Riley has a max. He cant do the combo of recruit, develop, scheme, motivate, …for a whole season. Early on we hoped he could…..but now you can see, it was never in him.

  8. if any of you think we have a chance of beating the ducks in their house with the Pac-12 north on the line for them, we have two chances. Slim and none

    • I hope Arizona knocks them off, they are STILL looking ahead after Stanford? If Utah doesn’t act like a bunch of pussies and allow a TD run back and punt on 4th and inches in the 3rd maybe the game is closer. Still don’t think the Ducks are all that they are made to be. I can see ASU or USC knocking them off int he Pac Champ, IF the Ducks get there. I don’t think we can beat em’ cause Riley and Co. just don’t care or are inspired enough to try.

  9. If Riley beats the Ducks it will quiet fans like us. I personally always root for the Beavs, however I would like to see us lose out, go 6-6, NOT get invited to a bowl and start shaving years off Riley’s contract. Any coach that smiles in the 4th Q while getting their ass handed to them is a born loser.

  10. I’d say it would make a difference for the fringe people who are somewhat upset, but not all the way pissed yet.

Washington (especially losing there starting QB) would fall into the games you should win category. A 3rd consecutive home loss will upset the majority of season ticket holders. Most were relatively dejected after the USC game. People are extra testy because 7:30 start times are a pain in the ass. If the Beavs come out sluggish and give up an early lead, the moans and groans will turn into screams and shouts. Losses suck as it is. When you lose to a team you should beat and have a long drive home starting at 11:00 pm there’s no time for the shitty day to recover and end positively. I imagine if they lose this game, you’ll see renewals slip.

Win and they end the home games on a positive note, that anger goes away and shifts to hope of screwing the Ducks out of a BCS bowl. Ducks won’t be happy with a Rose Bowl anyway.

  11. Set aside the argument whether Riley and Co. are good or even great coaches, the fact of the matter is they can’t recruit and if you can’t recruit you’re doomed to be a mediocre football program.

In the above mentioned Casey interview it was mentioned that Nate Yeske was named national pitching coach of the year for 2013 and do you know what Casey wanted to talk about? It was Yeske’s maturation as a recruiter and how this recruiting class could be ranked the top recruiting class in the nation. In baseball, in the rainy PNW. Oh yeah, they tell me that you can’t recruit to Corvallis. Such BS.

  12. actually, the more I think about it the more I’d like to go to a bowl game at 6-6 and lose to some shitty MWC or MAC team and finish 6-7. Then see Riley try and explain that one to the masses that would bow to him and eat the corn out of his shit . Anyone else remember the Vegas bowl we slipped down to after losing the civil war where BYU handed us our asses? It was readily apparent which team wanted to be there and which one didn’t. Albuquerque here we come bitches!!!! lol

    • Do I remember the Vegas Bowl with BYU/ Boy, howdy….I was there and it wasn’t pretty. Wind up to 50MPH; temps that dropped to 32 by halftime; Quizz’ only fumble that was returned for a TD (that was bullshit, because it wasn’t a lateral from Canfield but a forward pass); our punt that went for negative yardage, and on and on. No, the Beavs were not prepared to play that day and it pissed me off. Perhaps the only bright spot was Katz’ play in mop-up time, as he showed a strong and (apparently) accurate arm that day. The Ducks had a similar Vegas Bowl one year and I think it was against BYU as well, as they had their ass handed to them in the same fashion. Performances like that is what gets coaches fired, that’s all I can say.

      • they should. doesn’t mean they will. Should have beaten the crap out of BYU in the Vegas bowl a few years ago. We all know how that turned out.

      • You really think we can beat N Illinois?

It turns out mid-level MAC teams can beat EWU and hold Vernon Adams to less than 10 yards rushing. So do we think we can beat the crap out of any MAC team?

PS… I’m not saying we should go out and hire N Illinois’ coach. Been there. Done that.

        • We did it here in Minneapolis and it seems to be working!
The majority of the starters on the N ILL team, including Jordan Lynch, were Kill’s recruits.
They are a solid team that does not beat themselves. They beat Iowa, who has a solid team
with a really good O-line and defensive front seven. Also beat Purdue, Bend, but no great shakes there.

  13. Wait a minute. I think I finally see what’s going on here. It’s all part of a big master plan. I think our cries to get rid of BDC are being heard. That Riley! You gotta keep your eye on him! His master plan is to lose out, go 6-6 and get an at-large bid to the Motor City Bowl in Detroit, Mechicken baby! That way BDC can schmooze his big-10 cohorts into an AD position at a midwest school and keep his dignity allowing us to start fresh and anew! Our players get rewarded by spending Christmas in the wonderful city of Detroit and get to see all that a broke city in bankruptcy has to offer!!!! (Crime, Poverty, Homeless, Crippling Depression, etc, etc, etc…..or, back home as duck players call it). For their efforts on a 6-6 season our team will be dropped off at the corner of West Chicago and Livernoir unarmed at 9pm and must make it back to the team hotel by midnight (alive might I add) or suffer the wrath of the feared Riley and NOT be able to play in the game against some MAC directional school! The players that make it back alive, I mean return to the team hotel by curfew will then go out and get punked in the backyard of Central Western Presbyterian Lansing University for the Retarded to finish the capper on a great by the great Riley standards 6-7 season. After all, this is the reward for all their hard work for the year! I mean, c’mon, would you rather sit at home for Christmas or go running through the crime infested streets of Detroit fearing for your life?!?!? That my friends sounds like a Christmas vacation to remember!!!! And we have Riley the great to thank for this wonderful master plan. Gosh, Golly, you gotta get up pretty early in the morning to pull one over on ‘ol Mike!

  14. I am sad to see our program to fall so far behind Oregon’s. Without a power running game we don’t stand a chance against them this year. Before we can even consider talking about Rose Bowl games and Pac-12 championships we need to begin winning state Championships. I have seen nothing in the last 5 years change with respect to beating Oregon. I want to see a new coach step up to the podium and simply say “We will beat Oregon again”. At least when Pettibone was stinking it up in Corvallis the Civil War game one of those games where “anything can happen”. The civil war game lately has been “Time for our annual beat down”. Sorry Mike, but you have two more chances to beat Oregon before we run you!

  15. OT: Call me crazy (which I’m sure most will, whiskey go ahead and call me fucking crazy and or on crack ;-) ), but I think this is Oregon’s weakest team in the last 5 years. Attribute it to Helf if you want, but they’ve had a super soft schedule and only have one good win against UCLA. That’s it. The only other good-great team they’ve played is Stanford and we know what happened there.

If Super Mario is injured to the point that he’s not a threat to run, then their not a special team. Universally coaches just get stupid against them. It happens almost every game. Teams come out with a good game plan and keep it close. Oregon inevitably scores twice in a row because they have some explosive players, coaches panic, teams veer from their game plan and play into Oregon’s hands taking risks and turning the ball over. If your patient, Oregon will make mistakes and give the ball back. Their pretty soft as a team.

I’m with Bend: if the Beavs do a major gut check this week and put a solid showing together beating the Huskies going away, I think we have a good chance at finally upsetting the quacks and ruining the Rose Bowl the players don’t want. This is all assuming (BIG IF’S) Mariota is still struggling and we pull our heads out.

    • I think you’re on crack. Fortunately the day of the civil war is my youngest sons 7th b-day party so I’ll be busy and won’t have to watch

    • You are crazy. Have you watched Oregon this season? Turn the ball over? Mariota hasn’t thrown a single pick this season and will likely be in NYC for the heisman ceremony. They have three tailbacks that are infinitely more talented than our starter. They have a first round pick at CB. They are fast and well coached. Their conditioning wears teams out in the third and fourth quarters. What do we have? Cooks and Mannion are truly elite but only take us so far. Mannion has tossed 7 picks in yhe last two weeks. We have no running game, bland playcalling and after 5 years still no answer to the xone read. They will kill us! If you believe in moral victories perhaps we will be tied or only down 7 at half. Oh yeah… The game is at Autzen. I feel 50/50 against UW and 1/100 against UO.

      • I’ve watched them play multiple times, that’s why I made the statement. Marshall is a beast, and is a legit concern. I imagine he goes for around 180 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tyner probably adds 60 and another TD. Dat, who knows? He’s been hit or miss all season. If Mariota isn’t a threat to run, the magic of the offense goes away. He doesn’t have the noodle arm Kelly has, but it isn’t much better. He doesn’t throw interceptions because he typically has about a 10 yard window he has to hit for a completion. Due to the threat of him taking off, db’s get caught cheating, lose their assignments and leave guys wide open. Have you every seen him try to thread a needle? It’s true he typically puts the ball where the defense can’t get to it, but neither can the receiver as he misses by 10 yards. He is a great college QB (see Dixon, Masoli, Thomas…) because of the system. He’s not the messiah Ducks make him out to be. I’ll give you 10 to 1 odds he’ll be an NFL flop, because he cannot throw the ball. Kaepernick without the cannon is a lengthy running back = Mariota.

On D: they’re not as physical as they’ve been. Dion Jordan was a freak, Kiko had a 6th sense and was always in the right place at the right time, and Michael Clay was probably one of their all time underrated players. Dude was the glue of the defense, and you can tell their really missing him. They won’t have near the rush we’ve seen the last 3 games (or probably even as good as the Huskies). Not even close. They do have some good DB’s, so it won’t be easy. But we’ll be able to move the ball against Allowalotti’s D.

There’s a lot of if’s going into the game. If Mariota isn’t a running threat, if Mannion quits making mistakes, if Riley mixes up the play calling (No regrets like I should have run more, I should have called more screens, etc…), if without Chip they continue this “Woe is me for no Natty” attitude we’ll have a punchers chance. And they do turn the ball over. Wether it be going for it on 4th and 9 from the 50, or laying the ball on the turf. They seem soft/fragile (crying on the sidelines, constant whining, etc.) And they’ve missed USC and ASU this year, Luck of the Ducks.

They just don’t seem as scary as the last few years, and I feel this could be St. Riley’s miracle. Is the ball set up Lucy, I’m ready to try and kick it!

        • I hope you are right! But this one seems like we would be better off staying in Corvallis. Banker and Riley also have one less day to scheme so I am not optimistic that much will change. I am sorry but I don’t see us being competitive against the Ducks this year even if they play poorly. I bet we see Mariota on the bench with his feet up as we start the 4th quarter down 44-14. This is so depressing, but I have lost hope in our football program.

  16. Beaver Nation, we have heard from many of you regarding the number of night football games this season. Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis offers the following statement:
“Beaver Nation, we have received many emails and phone calls expressing concern about the number of night football games this season. Rest assured many of the same concerns are being conveyed across the Pac-12 by fan bases of other schools. The Conference’s Athletic Directors are making the issue of night games a priority discussion at future Pac-12 Conference meetings. While night games and weeknight home games are unavoidable due to contractual obligations, the goal moving forward is to work with our television partners and Conference office to mitigate the number of late kickoffs.

I will provide updates during the process and continue to be proactive on this issue. Thanks for your outstanding support of Beaver Athletics. See you this Saturday.”

    Go Beavs!

    Bob De Carolis
    Director of Athletics

      • Beaver Nation,

I hear you’re all mad as heck about these late starts every week, and darnit, we are too! Me and Mike were just talking about this, and we sure hope this gets a good talking-about in our meetings coming up next year. We’ll be sitting around hoping something good comes out of all this, just like the rest of you. If we hear anything, we’ll let y’all know.

See you at 7:30 PM on Saturday!

        ~BDC

    • thanks for the link. Interesting analogues: (1) “just how low the program had sunk” — (2) “not an excuse for a lifetime” — (3) “soon excuses won’t be enough”. (1) the 0-12 season and the Willingham era; the equivalent to OSU’s 28 year losing streak; (2) dissatisfaction with mediocrity; (3) = coach on the hot seat. Reading the comments was like reading this site, only with purple colored glasses, up to an including the schaudenfreud–hoping the team loses so a new coach can be brought in.

  17. just watched Iowa St outlast BYU 90-88. I gotta say, I don’t like BYU. Their student section is annoying as fuck and do nothing original. One of the ISU players flipped them off after fouling out and they were doing the left/right left/right chant. He went to sit down, faked, then told them they were number 1. Glad those stormin mormons lost.

  18. A win doesn’t change anything for me. What would change it is inspired, consistent play, primarily tackling and blocking…the team playing for four quarters…all three units playing well in most games. Generally, you don’t know which unit is going to show up from week to week. That’s a consistency issue and it gets back to coaching.

The losses aren’t THE key that is driving me away; OSU does not coach, nor subsequently play, “good” football; they don’t tackle well consistently, don’t run block and then when they turn the ball over on top of that they are predictably screwed.

Somebody on another thread said Riley seems “slow,” referencing his performance during post game interviews, and I have to agree. I don’t think he’s stupid, I think he processes information slowly (i.e. clock management decisions), and the things he has processed – his pro style offense for example – he holds onto strongly and for a long time. Others adjust to it, or recognize what he is doing before it happens (see USC game), and because he is a slow processor he doesn’t adjust quickly and he doesn’t make programmatic changes frequently. What’s the biggest addition to his offense. The fly sweep. Taken from a DIII college(?), though “simplified” for OSU because Linfield ran it multiple ways and OSU staff thought it too complex. Does anybody remember that BSU ran it with success against the Beavers before OSU added it?

This offseason, the team allegedly worked on no-huddle or hurry up offense and considered implementing it in their game plan. When will it happen? Next year?

Depending on who returns next year I may watch some games. But after that, if Riley stays, I’m done. It simply isn’t interesting to watch the coaching staff have the same problems over and over, and I have more interesting things to do with my time.

  19. Re: the Riley persona: Rich Neuheisel, on his Sirius XM gig, is fond of calling Riley the “Andy Taylor” (ref. Mayberry) of Pac -12 coaches. Though I think, for the most part, that Neuheisel means that in its most complimentary construction (nice guy, down to earth, etc.) the obverse of the Mayberry analogue is the naive, small town, soft edged, slow figure that OC posits here

  20. Beating UW (if we can, …maybe this is Riley’s signature “miracle” for this year?)is small consolation to the season. That would give us a 7-5, all the W’s against the bottom feeders … a mediocre season that gets to a bottom bowl. And the coaching failures a obvious and manifold. D? Run game? Make a smart adjustment call in a game? Do even juvenile clock management?

But….the mediocre fan base will see 7-5 as “good goin, Mike!”, ….since its a WINNING SEASON!

I think what we want, is a chance for title contention and the occasional really hot, wow-it-all-came-together kind of thing. That’s football….Riley did get us some of that, with a couple title contention seasons, but never did the Erickson and gave us a BCS. But now he seems to me to be riding that old horse until he finally rides off into the Beaver hall of fame sunset…..years from now.

With Robinson, he isnt even flirting with any titles, and hasnt even made us competitive in conference. So I can see him maybe becoming a scapegoat, and BDC showing us, by golly he CAN make some hard decisions. So I think there is hope there, in BB.

But football, ….no. Riley is on a pedestal already, having done NO great work. Yeah, decent job getting us to a string of winning seasons. So he is here to stay, imo. I think he would have to slip up and post like 3 losing season’s in a row to get the axe. And now run down and getting old, so forget ever beating UO.

OSU football is in a huge rut. It doesnt look nearly as bad as the 28 yr losing streak, but given the rise to prominence by the rival down the road, its gonna seem about the same….

    • A great AD would see this issue and see the contract for Riley, would keep Riley but consistently be trying to improve the rest of the coaching staff to cover weak areas as they appear. Our AD does NOTHING

      • Normally I could give two craps about writing and what ends up on a forum or in a thread. If I can read it, it’s all good.

But I get angry when I read poor writing from people who are paid to do so.

Hallow eyed? Really guy who writes words in the English language for pay?

Sometimes I wonder about the English part. Here’s another good nugget:
“Mannion was picked off four times Saturday, which brings his two game total to 7 INTs in the last two games.”

I didn’t read that sentence a second time, leaving the total times I read that sentence at one. Furthermore, in addition to also only reading that sentence once as well, on top of that I only read it withal but once too.

        • Agreed, the writing quality on this site is generally poor, but they do at least call attention to the problems and weaknesses OSU possesses, and they have decent videos – brief highlights, this telling video of Riley – that aren’t always offered elsewhere.

      • Crap, Jack is policing. Now I’m going to have to proof and edit.

Seriously, though, I think pay raises the expectations. I never criticize blogs for the writing, but newspapers, yeah.

          • From the site (bottom of the article):

“Peter Socotch is a multimedia producer for CSNNW.com covering the Blazers, Ducks, Beavers and the rest of the NW sports landscape. He is our master of video production and part-time blogger.”

Yep, I’d suggest he’s paid. But apparently more video production than writing responsibilities.

    • no shit sherlock. Many have seen this for a few years now. Look forward or get left behind. Right now this program is getting left behind. Why our AD cannot see this is beyond me.

  21. Looks deflated as all hell. I liked the cooks clip defending mannion. Man I want to see more emotion like that from Riley or Mannion. Maybe a little frustrated fist pound to show a little give a shit.
Riley is known for being the “dad” figure. Some like it or don’t. But that sort of easy going attitude isn’t inspiring all the time. Sometimes the “dad” needs to get pissed and show some ffing emotion and set the kids straight. No one likes to loose wether it be the coaches, players or fans.

      • Never. That rant was so fucking stupid. Football is not war.

But what pissed me off the most was that was almost a month after Robert Reynolds choked Sorgi, and here’s Winslow admitting in this crap on a biscuit rant that he was meaning to maim Tennessee’s players.

    • If you don’t think Riley’s showing emotion in that video I’m not sure what to say. If you think him going tomato and huffing and puffing will bring wins, you’re probably simplifying leadership and group dynamics.

      • I don’t think anyone said he wasn’t emotional. If there’s an anger and deeply rooted competitive spirit being held in check, then it’s not obvious to those looking for it, let alone the casual observer. The overwhelming perception of those who see this presser is that he’s beaten and broken, heartbroken to be exact.

      • Agreed he’s showing emotion, but he’s not showing any kind of strength. He looks like he just lost the NC game on a pick 6, but instead it’s just another mid-season self-defeat that has Riley looking defeated.

        • Cooks said. “You go back to work, simple as that. You move on. We’ve got Washington in our back yard. Our last game at home for our seniors. We’ve got to see those guys out right. We have to play as one. We’re not making this a half and half season. It’s not going to be no six and six season. That doesn’t look right. We’re going to turn this thing around. We have to. We have no choice.”

Has Cooks already conceded to Oregon in his mind?

          • I don’t think he’s conceded anything. What he’s saying is that if they don’t get it right in this game, then they just aren’t going to get it right.

Recent history says UW plays like crap in Corvallis, so I don’t know how much a W or L plays into that. The W is better than the L of course. But getting it right means everyone coming in and playing on the same page, minimizing or overcoming mistakes well with solid play, and moving on knowing that can all be done no matter who the opponent is.

  22. Dwillo, I don’t know about crack, but the delusion pill seems to have taken effect.

    1. OOC schedules are planned a couple/few years out. You can’t judge how soft or difficult those games are going to be. Oregon absolutely throttled their 3 opponents, traveling 3,000 miles to do so vs. Virginia. Hawaii hung with OSU for a half, and SDSU had 2 very late TOs to hand that game your way.

    2. BTW, Oregon beat a 16th ranked wash. on the road.

    3. Both wins vs. Utah & WSU were ultimately decided by late game TOs, the cougs literally handed that game away on a silver platter. Yes, Oregon missed the teams you mentioned, but that happens to every team in the league. Conversely, you got USC, Stanford & Wash. at home. That’s just the way things get scheduled.

    4. Sure, Stanford beat the ducks. And you can’t argue that Mariota was playing hurt, on the road, and they were #5 in the nation. At least oregon’s special teams made it interesting in the end.

Hey, I know what it’s like to have the team you root for hit a bad patch. But come on, man. You had to have looked ahead to what was left after your 6-1 start & know it was going to be rough going. Especially without a running game.

    • 1. Making excuses for a super soft schedule doesn’t make it not a super soft schedule. But then you’re responding to a post about the Ducks, so I’m not sure what the Beavs’ schedule has to do with it.

Dwill: The Ducks have had a super soft schedule this year.
Random Duck moron: Well, it was scheduled years ago. And besides, the Beavs only won two close games in the non-con.
      Any intelligent reader: Huh?

      2. You’re a moron if you think UW deserved to be ranked at any time this season. And I include everyone who voted for them in the polls as well. You should also brag about beating an undefeated Nicholls State.

      3. Who are you talking about? Your grammar suggests that you’re saying the Ducks only beat Utah and Wazzu due to late game turnovers, but I don’t think you meant to say that. But then you’re responding to a post about the Ducks, so I’m not sure what the Beavs’ schedule has to do with it anyway.

      4. All the things you say “you” can’t argue… you can. And Nikegon’s ST play in that game almost made it interesting. They needed a third lucky bounce just to make it so, but they came up short.

Your last paragraph makes good sense, and we have discussed it before, primarily at the beginning of the season. Most of us could see this coming since the first game. We thought the running game would show up against a 1AA school. When it didn’t, all we could really say was that Bartoo got the first game wrong, but he’s probably right about the rest.

That still doesn’t explain why you put that paragraph in your response to a post about the Ducks.
Dwil: I’m writing something about the Ducks.
You: Yes, I understand where you’re coming from. The Beavs have no running game.
      Any intelligent reader: Huh?
