Passive Aggressive O-Live Article

I am talking about this thread:

http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2013/11/oregon_state_beavers_coach_mik_2.html

Instead of putting the onus on fans, the media should step up and say what they mean. To put up a picture of Riley with the shit-eating-grin and then ask, after a 5th straight loss, “what do you guys think of Riley’s 13th season?” is a cop out.

It’s interesting what they’re implying, though. It’s more in line with this site than say, pure-orange, where Pollys congregate to stick their heads’ up their collective ass and breath in the stale air.

    • Angry: when it comes to OSU football the media (or at least The oregonian’s writers) are continually putting the onus on the fans. Canzano’s early piece (how long can fans take this?),
and then later the silly divorce column and now this. The inescapable answer is that the Press desperately wants Riley to succeed and can’t work up the gumption to advocate for his removal, so they finesse it with this sort of stuff. That’s why this site is so important. The O’s writers are constantly reading it and taking the temperature of stuff.

  1. The problem I have is

Yes, they played well enough to win, almost. But it was such an about face from the 5 previous games that what I see is a coaching failure. Either or ..,.the coaches schemed to win and put a fire into the players so that they played to their potential or maybe even above themselves. Probably both. Still, its a loss. Being competitive makes you feel good but doesnt improve your record.

BUT WHY …. wait to the last game of the regular season to do it?????

If you can do this, why not do for the first tough conference game and all the later ones???

So my feeling is the same as before.. … This was a stunt, a one time effort by the coaches, probably because Riley felt his admin support slipping. To me it goes along with the idea that Riley is cruising….riding his early OSU career good form. Only applies himself when its necessary for his image.

So to me it doesnt matter that he is upbeat, it means nothing. Recent history shows he will cruise when he can. He hasnt lost it, but I bet this upswing doesnt mean much.

  2. Lots of momentum right now to actually affect change. Frankly as a Beaver I’m shocked there are this many knowledgeable Beaver fans still left. Keep it up so we can get a real AD and a real football program. The problem isn’t Riley as much as it is Bobby Debacle. He is the worst AD in America. He’s run our basketball and now football program into the ground. He doesn’t have the first ounce of competitive desire, and he’d rather talk about the non-revenue sports performance and financial viability than wins and losses. Until we create a movement to get this joke out of that seat, Riley, Banker, Obaminson, they will all keep getting paid. Bobby Debacle is a dictator. Nobody likes dictators. I’d urge all of you to be loud, be vigilant and keep your wallets closed until that tone deaf President removes this clown so we can become something more than Portland State South. God Bless this website.

  3. To me, it’s just a lazy question to fill up some website space until they let the all powerful Canzano weigh in on the “state of the program” after the season ends. I mean, what is she looking for? Riley has lost 5 straight games with three being pretty clueless performances and two decent ones where he made some questionable decisions. They won 9 games that year and six, maybe 7 this year. You tell us Lindsay.

  4. Mike Tomlin is expected to be fired. He would be a great get for OSU as far as recruiting and a tougher image. OSU has thought of itself as having some Steelers qualities but pussywillow Riley doesn’t exactly deliver that with his aw shucks routine. Have to think a guy like Tomlin could be exactly what is needed to raise the bar at OSU. Kinda guy who could fill the stadium, would do what it takes to rally support and finish Reser on or ahead of time and get quality athletes to want to play for him. The image of OSU would be cooler and more hard nosed which is needed.

    • don’t know about Tomlin, but I was riveted by the ASU coaches post-game comments. The guy’s got goals, talks about them, and then delivers. I like their chances at home vs. Stanford. Ronnie Lott, RONNIE LOTT, said he’d like to line up and play for the guy! I’ll be rooting for ASU int he conf. title game because I like the story of what a committed, forceful coach can do. Truth is, if he gets to and then wins the Rose Bowl, he could end up on the SC sideline next year. He’s ambitious and known to move about. But here’s the deal. The Polly’s will learn the wrong lesson when, this year or some time in the future, he leaves ASU. To quote Edward R. Murrow, “I can hear it now.” “Yeah, but they couldn’t keep a good coach.” To which I would respond, “yes, but he got them to the Rose Bowl.” All speculation now, but possible.

  5. This is just audience participation.

It’s not them being lazy or putting the onus on fans. It’s a supplemental post that allows for fan discussion. AFAIK they no longer have forums so this allows for some discussion on the site of the mainstream newspaper in Oregon.

You guys should be happy as it allows you to make smart sounding arguments to support your opinions. Instead you just sit on your site and complain.

I generally assume this site is a bunch of crotchety old men, but this just seems like a reach post.

      • I know crotchety old men and GOBeavs doesn’t measure up!

Real crotchety old men post here AND on O-live. BTW, the O does still have forums, but they’ve devolved into a lot of name calling.

      • He’s crotchety because he disagrees with you? You sound crotchety because you have some outdated vision of what newspaper journalism is. Newspapers are a sinking ship and they’re attempting to survive by getting web page hits. The Oregonian sees the comments as one method of getting these hits, even if it’s mainly a cesspool consisting of mostly idiots. They repeatedly make articles referencing comments by the readers (using read loosely) and always have links to the stories that have the most comments.

I think they’re implying that fans are frustrated, so this a way to get them to their page.

        • He’s crotchety because he wrote a crotchety paragraph.

If that’s the Oregonian’s motivation that’s pretty sad. Speaking the truth would get them a lot more hits than protecting people and then coping out/asking fans to do the heavy lifting. I can see why they do it: they get the message across without ruffling any feathers. It’s just very weak and typical passive-aggressive West coast mentality.

          • “passive-aggressive West coast mentality”?? I haven’t heard that one yet. Maybe you haven’t been around uber passive aggressive Christian fundamentalists in the Midwest, or experienced “Southern charm”.

  6. I really don’t think the Beavs improved or stepped up in the game vs. the Ducks as much as the Ducks are regressing as the year goes on. Look at what ASU did to Zona one week after Zona smashed the Ducks.
I think not only are we a very poorly coached team but I really don’t think we are all that talented either. The early season success was both scheduling and luck. We were fortunate to win vs. Utah and SD ST. OSU could easily be 4-8.
We need new leadership from BDC on down. Football is not improving, Basketball is an embarrassment and I for one will not renew my season tickets for football or bb until changes are made.

    • Agree. With the win over the Terps I will root for them against Depaul on Fox Sports 1 at 1pm today but my hunch is they raised their game and played their best for Obama family. Not that they can’t do it but they most likely won’t because the drive won’t be great enough. Hope they prove me wrong though as I would then believe Robinson better for OSU than Riley which I am already leaning especially because Riley has had a huge amount of years already and not done much.

I also respect recruiting and Riley underperforms there the vast majority of the time. Crsig has some big bodies this year. Don’t think next years team will be nearly as good. With Jahii Carson and this year’s team he definitely should have reached the NCAA and probably could win in the first round. Woulda, coulda, shoulda though as team as is with Moreland coming in late and maybe a tad rusty makes it so they have plenty of work and dedication required to make the NIT.

  7. Players say they want to play for Riley, why didn’t they then? Why didn’t they show up against UW? Why didn’t they run block in 11 other games? What was with the “grab em up high, hold on and slap at the ball” tackling form – that usually resulted in several more YAC – witnessed so many times?

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2013/12/oregon_state_insider_beavers_s.html

Again, they reflect their coach. It’s easier to talk about what you could have done, or want to do (in vague temrs), then show up and compete week in and week out and play fundamentally sound football.

    • I thought it was interesting that Dylan Wynn brought up the coaches to begin with. You don’t have many players saying “it’s not the coaches” is that context. It kind of makes me think IT IS the coaches in some of the players minds.

          • I don’t think I’m being naive. Maybe you’re being pessimistic. I would think a player who thinks it’s on the coaches wouldn’t comment/remain neutral to the press about the coaches. It seems like Wynn, Crichton, and Murphy are expressing loyalty without being cued by the interviewer, but rather Riley saying the loss was on the coaches. If someone on the team agreed with Riley that it was on them, they’d think ‘damn right it is’, and walk off quietly, avoiding any fall out from teammates if they said it out loud. For what it’s worth, many former Beavs have a strong loyalty to Riley.

          • You never talk about team in public. If anyone wants blame, you offer yourself up for media consumption. It matters not whether you’re a player, a coach, the ball boy, what have you. YOU DON’T LAY BLAME ON ANYONE WITHIN YOUR YOUR PROGRAM!!!!! PERIOD!!!! END OF DISCUSSION!!!!

I do not take lightly Banker constantly blaming his players for failing to execute whatever. That is as low class an action as can be done. It’s worse that it’s committed by someone supposedly learned and wise in such things… as opposed to an 18-22 year old kid with emotion overriding reason.

            Let’s do this right now:
MARK BANKER SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED AFTER THE FIRST WEEK OF THIS SEASON NOT FOR THE ABSOLUTE FAILURE HE PERFORMED AGAINST EWU. HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED FOR PUSHING HIS PLAYERS UNDER THE BUS AFTER SAID FAILURE. THAT WAS AS LOW CLASS A MOVE AS THERE EVER WAS IN THE HISTORY OF COACHING. THOSE WHO ACCEPTED IT AS, “did he play the game,” AND SUCH EXCUSES ARE WORSE THAN HIM AND ABSOLUTELY HATE ON THE PLAYERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will never think Banker deserves to be a coach at OSU ever again. That complete and absolute bullshit does not deserve to be called professional, let alone decent. I will rail against MARK BANKER for the rest of his time at OSU because he is slime for shitting on his players. He shat on them because he is a coward.

Put another way, MARK BANKER SHITS ON HIS PLAYERS BECAUSE HE’S A CYA COWARD!!!!!!!!!!

Go ahead. try and deny it. There are serious discussions in Alabama about getting rid of Saban because he pulled the same low class shit this past weekend. I kid you not. The best coach at the best program in college football is getting a lashing because he felt it was necessary to be a coward who shat on his players after a loss. He also deserves to be shown the door. That’s what happens when something so absolutely anti-team and egregious occurs.

But Banker gets a, “did he pass, run, block, catch,” bullshit pass from idiotic people who think they’re supporting the program while they absolutely shit on it and make a national joke of it.

What they said is correct. You never never NEVER NEVER EVER throw anyone but yourself under the bus. NEVER!!!!! As for your last sentence. I take little stock in Stockholm Syndrome victims.

  8. So if we’ve already attempted writing letters to the university president and AD stating our boycott of products until change is made, maybe it’s time we take the next step as well. Organizations such as Nike, O-live, Reser Foods, etc., should be made aware that we are unwilling to support companies which are unwilling to push for change within our beloved university, yet continue to profit from its exposure.

This may seem a little drastic, but money talks and with the pendulum swinging back in our favor, those with deeper wallets will ensure that our voices resonate louder.

  9. See this bit on Jordan Villamin at Portland Tribune?

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/203005-eggers-on-running-up-scores-osu-receiving-prospect-herb-browns-championship-and-more-

“• If you’ve wondered why Oregon State receiver Jordan Villamin hasn’t practiced through the season, it’s because the 6-4, 240-pound man-child ran into academic issues during training camp. The Fontana, Calif., native has attended classes as a partial qualifier fall term and has been allowed to stay on scholarship, but he is ineligible to play or practice.

The hope is Villamin will be eligible winter term, which would make him a redshirt freshman next season. Insiders say the kid is a physical freak of nature and a blue-chip prospect. ”

Hope he makes it through the academics..Beavers could use a physical freak, particularly if Cooks leaves.

    • Haha, this is unbelievable. Guess they liked the Lane Kiffin era so well, they just couldn’t bear to abandon it completely. Welcome to L.A., Lane Kiffin 2.0.

Seriously, the Washington offense is so much less than the sum of its parts. There’s an insane amount of talent on that team that somehow manages to just not get it done…striking resemblence to pre-Orgeron USC.

Washington is the big winner here. They get a serious upgrade at HC without having to pay for it. Plus word is that Chris Petersen is seriously considering the gig. If that’s true, Washington will be beating Oregon full-time again in 2 years. Count on it.
