Interview: Brandin Cooks

32

How was Oregon State able to earn your commitment over large market universities like Washington and UCLA?

Oregon State earned my commitment over those types of schools because the program here is just built off character, and that's my type of people. And the system ran here fits my style.

Coach Brennan was hired after your commitment. Has that change amongst the staff affected your development in any way?

When Coach Brennan was hired it was still the same expectations as before.

When the Oregon State coaches were recruiting you, did they point out the negatives of competing universities, or did they focus on Oregon State’s positives?

When Oregon State was recruiting me they focused on Oregon State and nobody else.

On a similar note, do the coaches use the Oregon fiasco as a teaching experience? How much time do the coaches spend emphasizing how to stay out of trouble?

Coach Riley is a strong guy on character and the teaching of staying out of trouble.

Oregon State has recruited a large number of WRs the past few cycles. Will there be 4WR sets or an Air Raid attack in the future?

That question is out of my hands I have no info on that.

Going into fall camp, where are you listed on the depth chart? Do you think you’ll see the field this upcoming season?

Going into fall camp I know I will be competing for a spot, and as far as seeing the field this upcoming year that's in my hands on how I perform.

Cooks also added that God and his mother have been the biggest role models in shaping who he is today.

Overall, I am slightly disappointed with how this interview turned out. I was hoping Brandin would shed more light several topics. To be fair, when we first spoke he asked if his doing an interview would be illegal, so I think he might have been spooked by the fiasco down south. No worries. Goodspeed, Brandin Cooks.

  1. Can’t blame him for being a little worried given all that is going on elsewhere. At least he is paying attention. Too bad he never provided more insight but some guys just aren’t big talkers.

    • ran into another buddy from my grad school days in eugene whose son has been kicking ass for the t-wolves. haven’t seen him in 20 years. He absolutely COULD NOT CARE LESS what might happen to his alma mater after the way he, his son and his beach boy brother were treated at mac court when the bruins came to play the ducks 3 years ago. I got the impression he was hoping for the worst. However, I certainly could have inferred incorrectly.

    • I would have been surprised if he said Riley used negative tactics given his personality. But one would think some of the other coaches might get a few jabs in at Oregon and other schools while recruiting.

  2. The question about offensive tactics re wide reciever sets, I suspect thats for Wisconsin to find out. I wouldnt expect any player to pass on expected tactics.

I think this interview gives a good view of the type of player OSU would want, and who would want to be at OSU. Some guys like and expect to break rules, and some think character counts. I am glad OSU comes off as a place where character counts and trouble isnt wanted.

And I see no reason that good character would keep you out of the Rose Bowl. Stanford went to a bcs bowl, and appears to have done it with good character. Kudos to Riley and staff.

The negative aspects of UO’s behavior are in the public eye. No need to mention it to recruits. If they are so stupid they cant see it,, they are probably not who you want.

    • Good points.

Speaking of Duck fans, they are not happy with me. I’ve been getting hate mail and negative posts from them all day. Apparently my blog has jumped the shark, and I am a liar because I wrote about a lead someone sent me, and I don’t want to name a source. Apparently because there are bigger ethical atrocities in other parts of the world, we shouldn’t focus on ethics in college football–that seems very convenient.

Anyway, I will have to address these guys in the morning. Too tired now.

      • Seeing how the Love family was treated at Mac Court was a perfect example of how many of them react when you are not on “their side”.

      • You know that putting Duck fans in a single category is just as wrong as putting beavs into one. I am a Duck fan. I don’t hate the beavs or even root against them except in obvious situations (1). I have seen rabid Beav fans pick apart Mike Riley more than myself. I feel that his success with the team as well as the number of players he has placed in the (N)o (F)un (L)eague speaks for itself. A lot of players get lost in the shuffle at other schools. Mike Riley is an awesome coach and all around good guy. He is a tactician and makes the most of the resources he has available. Move past the hate! Everyone is going to hope for the best for their program.

  3. Angry…..I wouldnt worry about hate mail if they dont know who you really are. UO uberfans have gone nuts, and loath anyone who now criticizes THEIR program, despite the national media doing exactly that.

The local media is behaving pretty well toward them, and they still line up to take shots at Canzano or whoever. You are just stating the obvious, with rumors that are not unbelievable at all. Block their email and forget it.

  4. I think the Ducks are waking up to the fact that sanctions are probable after Bellotti came out and said as much today. They were still in the denial stage before and as they transition they are awnry.

  5. Nikegon has been in the stew for some time. The fans are just afraid because they now see the meat falling off the bone.

But they are worse than the Christian Coalition and what Focus on the Family used to do. There is not an article out there which isn’t tainted by stupidity and denial within the comment section. Not even tOSU fans were this bad. They stewed on their own and linked the articles for the most part.

I’d be inclined to believe that Nike has paid hacks beating the stupid drum just to try to scare off reporters with a wave of idiocy… if I believed in corporate conspiracies.

      • Yeah… I should. This should be a good time I guess. I’ve been following the boys in Macedonia. It looks like they’re having some fun. You just gotta love Berto bringing down the board on his own head, bouncing up and running to a camera saying, “Get this on video.”

I think he’s going to have a season to remember coming up.

We’ve talked a lot about the lack of leadership on the team last year, but I saw Kevin making a lot of noise trying to get the team going a couple times late in the year. Him, Berto and Big Joe might make a good core for leadership along with Jared.

Maybe I’ll start with Charles Barton. i have his coach’s email address in Sweden, I’ve been meaning to see if he has any vids of his senior year. His father told me he was just blowing up the league like a man possessed.

  6. Ask him what the spirit of the players seems to be, heading into the next season, after a disappointing one.

How does he think James Rogers is doing, both physically and in spirit.

Who does he think will become the primary running back..

  7. “Cooks also added that God and his mother have been the biggest role models in shaping who he is today.”

Wait a minute, I thought God only sent recruits to U of O…

  8. hey angry. time to evolve and get after other pac12 teams that think their shit doesn’t stink. that’s more interesting to most of us. just a thought

      • huh? that’s a compliment to the recent blogs and as jackbeav pointed out cal, asu, and others have plenty of dirty laundry. the beavs are about as clean as they come and have still won more games than everyone except the two biggest cheaters in the pac12.

        • Sorry I thought this was another stop bugging UO rant. Yes I would also be interested in other investigations but I am willing to bet we won’t have nearly the number of sources.

    • He has somewhat of a point. And we’ve touched on the Tedford Files a little. But a little is all we have to go on right now. It’s not like we have multiple interviews with parties involved unwittingly admitting to violation after violation… or a paper trail a mile wide confirming those violations and showing more.

I’d love to see what Cal has been up to for the past couple years. But we’re not going to get any help from Eugene given the standing threat by Tedford to out them for more than we already know.

I just have a feeling that Sark can’t be trusted. Just a feeling, nothing more.

Whenever Dennis Erickson is a coach somewhere, I think the fans of his team live in trepidation for finding something skeezy is going on. I know I felt that way when he was here.

Fink and Weasel are hard to pin down since they get to recruit LA area kids to LA schools. But, given Fink’s MO and his recent history at Tennessee, you just know he’s up to something shady.

We’ll see how Stoops does now that his best recruiters have gone to Florida State and Colorado. But I never had the same feeling I have for Sark. And I think for all his failings, Stoops is still a straight shooter.

Where do you even start to look when it comes to Furd? And Wazzu, CU and Utah just don’t seem likely at this point.

      • LOL….. I suspect most cheaters are far more adept than our boy Chip….or maybe just less of the opinion that they are the second coming and shouldnt be questioned.

  9. I want to know from Brandin what gives him a bigger thrill.

Does he like catching the ball over the middle and sprinting to daylight? Or does he like to fly? Does he like beating a press? Or does he like playing mind games on soft coverage?

Is he up for some fly sweep action?

    • My thrill is going across the middle catching the ball and running to daylight. The adrenalin rush going across that middle is spectacular. Don’t get me wrong I love beating the coverage and sticking the DBs with some nasty route running!

      • I like the points too. :)

Didn’t you run track too? What are your PR’s? And are you gonna do it at OSU?

And I think we need a nickname. Do you have one now? Or do we need to come up with one?

  10. I love this guy…if you followed his recruiting, he’s been a Beaver from the day he gave his verbal, through and through. I just know the kid’s going to do some great things for us.

    Welcome to Beaver Nation Brandin!

  11. I really like this latest wave of underclassmen and recruits. They seem solid and enthusiastic about their commitment to Oregon State. Seems like some guys are putting as much effort into recruiting as the coaches are.
