Net Neutrality, Comcast, etc…

44

Maybe you guys don’t care about this, but it will affect anyone using Comcast/Time Warner to watch or stream games. You will likely be paying more for a worse product, all so Comcast doesn’t have to compete legitimately (because true Capitalism would render them obsolete). Now we get this incestuous bastard child hybrid of FCC + Comcast/TW. It equals a big, steaming pile of shit for society. Since this will effect your streaming experiences of games, disposable income (you will pay more for less), and sets precedent for future restrictions/regulations, I urge everyone to get informed and start to care. You can start by signing the petition, but then you should cancel Comcast and use any other option (city internet is a good choice if you have it). Also write the FCC and any other applicable agency.

Bad news: Three judges just dealt a huge blow to the open Internet.

Their ruling means that companies like Verizon can now block or slow down any website, application or service they like. And they’ll be able to create tiered pricing structures with fast lanes for those who can afford the tolls — and slow lanes for everyone else.

Tell the FCC to do everything in its power to fight back.

It’s not legit to mope and take it up the ass because you’re middle class and feel like you have no say. That attitude makes you much more of a loser than being lower or middle class.

  1. It will even affect AngryBeavs. This is a big deal because server costs have DOUBLED for me since last year. Is killing net neutrality a way to kill the dissenter with a small voice, too?

An Internet without net neutrality allows ISPs to charge premiums for bandwidth/data usage, causing two potential problems for publishers:

It imposes higher operating costs on publishers. Those costs would likely be passed down to their customers and advertisers, who already contribute to the cost of producing content.
Publishers who could not afford the premiums would have their content delivered slower, causing poor user experience, cutting down on traffic and, ultimately, effecting business.

It appears that content creators and their customers, as well as advertisers, would be most negatively affected. Advertising dollars would need to be increased and aligned with publishers who could afford to pay bandwidth premiums, since they would likely pass that cost to advertisers. In turn, the number of publishers an advertiser could work with would diminish. On the same note, higher bandwidth costs could be imposed on advertisers who maintain their own content pages or e-marketing platforms, thus decreasing their marketing budgets. Overall ad budgets could potentially be stymied, adversely affecting publishers. The consumer is likely to be hit with the cost in the form of higher priced services.

  2. It is really disgusting. Everyone please write their congressional representatives. I honestly believe this is one of the biggest fights of our generation.

If the telecoms get their way they will basically turn the internet into the same model as cable tv. Only well-funded ventures will be able to garner an audience. Netflix already had to pay up to Comcast. Nearly gone will be startups, innovators, and the average citizen with a voice.

This guy had some interesting posts on the subject in February/early March: http://www.infoworld.com/blogs/paul-venezia?source=footer

  3. Signed. Yes it is a nightmare scenario. It would basically be like “Ok you purchased this package for certain sites but to get Google it will be 10 bucks extra.” It also opens the door to discrimination and censorship. This needs to be fought against….Everybody please sign the petition!

    • We need to take it to the streets. I don’t think a petition will cut it. The National complacency is so high that I don’t expect much resistance from citizens.

  4. I told commiecast to eat a bag of dicks about 12 years ago when they tried to fuck me over and will never do business with them again.

    • That is great. I might call them tomorrow just to tell them off. But I’d just get some sales associate and it’s not really his/her fault.

      • it’s better to write a letter or email and address it to the higher ups. Doesn’t mean they’ll read it, but it’s better than playing phone tag with Aziz who’d rather kill you via suicide bomb than listen to some westerner he doesn’t give two shits about.

      • so back in sabout 2002 or 03 my cable just gets randomly shut off the week of Thanksgiving. My wife calls me at work in tears telling me whats going on. I called commiecast and what had happened was, for some stupid reason they could not even explain, they started mailing my bill to my street address instead of my post office box. So after 3 months of the bill they mailed me kept getting sent back to them, and not getting paid, instead of calling me asking me why, they just send someone out to shut off my cable. I asked them why they never called me asking to verify my mailing address and was told that was my job to keep them informed of my mailing address. To which I replied, It never fucking changed asshole! Some dumbass who works in your billing department just randomly decided to start mailing the bill to my street address. They were not willing to accept any responsibility for the gaffe and even had the nerve to tell me that by law they don’t have to send me a bill but I still have to pay them. To which I said bull fucking shit. you don’t send me a bill, you don’t get paid. They wanted me to pay a $50 reconnect fee. I told them to eat shit, paid them the 3 months of cable owed and told them I would never do business with them again and would not recommend them to anyone either. And that was 12 years ago and I still stand by that statement. Commiecast and their “award winning customer service” can suck the sweat off a dead mans balls.

  5. I also read recently there were talks of a directv/dish network merger because of the commicast/time warner merger. How is either of these even possible with anti trust laws?

    • I bet several of the everything is orange colored turds folks from over there are having serious withdrawals. I know and worked with the guy that runs that site and he is a good dude. But it’s just over the top over there. you can’t question anything.

  6. anyone got any feeds to mlb games? Feed2all.eu doesn’t have shit for baseball. No mlb package thru dish so I gotta find something online to watch the games

    • Her and Conner should be a big improvement though since they are outsiders. They’ll have a fresh look at the program and be able to compare it to where they came from (covering Ok State and Maryland, I think).

  7. Wait… I thought less government oversight was good for us. Laissez faire works this way always. What’s the issue? Isn’t unfettered capitalism what we want?

On the bright side, when we deregulate whole industries like this they tend to eventually implode in one big bubble of poo.

The downside of that, of course, is that they will have become too big to fail and need to be bailed out… to the fearful screams of laissez faire proponents saying they just need to be allowed to fail… because allowing a huge sector of the economy to rot isn’t a proverbial bad apple in the barrel which is the economy.

  8. And this garbage started happening a couple months ago. Suddenly google and other engines stopped forums and regional blogs (outside my region) from populating the search lists. What was once an information highway has now become a four lane highway with the three left lanes closed.

And they want a toll for the last lane… as if they’re not already being paid directly through billing and indirectly through civil easements and tax subsidies.

    • And I think the civil easement argument is the only one we’re going to win in the end… hopefully.

If they are given the right to use private property for their gains due to right of way, then I also deserve that use. I shouldn’t have to pay a premium for the same access they get.

I think it’s funny that the one best solution would be civil ISPs. We (well… some) rail and rail against the same thing when it’s in vital sectors which have no business being for-profit due to their collective common good. But this one is in our face and immediately recognizable I guess.

  9. I’m not really trying to be mean here. But where were you all nine years ago when Congress declared war on neutrality?

I will give props to one libertarian group (gun owners?) who went suddenly liberal on this subject at the time. They weren’t very good in arguments against the FReeple, but they were dogged.

And it took that kind of mindset to keep on keepin’ on against the constant barrage of “conservatives” telling us that we were just conspiracy mongers who didn’t care for Capitalism.

You can guess the fallacies committed… for years on end… until now.

We will win because we are right. There can be no other outcome. But it’s just one of many subjects deserving the same treatment.

      • I would never blame idiot boy for being so clever.

Although, he was an idiot while in office, and corporate entities ran wild due to legislation pushed through because he was just an immense idiot.

And we’re still sufering te effects of his being an immense idiot now… so much so that I feel even the right wing corporate buddy that is Obama deserves little credit for the condition of the nation now.

I can pile on Obama for a couple things for days on end. But idiot boy and Greenspan deregulating the hell out of business just ran the fucking country into the fucking ground. If you haven’t been reading the declassified reports as they’ve come out a decade after classification, then just shut the fuck up and go on not caring about your fucking country. You didn’t care when people like me told you what was going on. You just told me and people like me that “that” would never happen. Guess what Sherlock… the easily and historically predictable has happened and will continue to happen.

You can go back to watching Kazoo Dynasty now.

        • I only Fuck with you because you swing on Barry half-white’s nuts like he’s the second coming of Bob Dylan.

George Bush was a piece of shit. Fucking duh.

But Barry is just as big of a piece of shit , and you refuse to admit it. So I Fuck with you. So Fuck you.

          • And by the way…do you really believe Bush was an idiot? Seriously, every move he was told to make was calculated to make shitpots of money for his cronies and it did just that. The dude just did his job as a sellout scumbag sack of shit politician just like Barry and Reid and the rest of those pukes. Dipshits like you that try to differentiate between the two are most if the problem.

          • There’s a difference between being a sell-out and being a puppet idiot. Thus, differentiation is valid.

And now that documents are being declassified, the claims that idiot boy was just lying so he could send my friends and family off to die are proving to be true.

Obama is turning out to be more like Reagan… without all the tax increases.

  10. The onus is now on you to support that statement.

Go find my writing which supports what you just stated. I’ll be right here waiting.

      • I’ll give you a little help.

You think I’m “liberal” even if you have no clue what that means. Obama is about as liberal as grease on a column of soap. You need to rethink your ideas of what other people tell you what to think before you spout stupid shit about what I might think. You might find that once you ignore what you’re told to believe you align yourself with me almost to a tee.

But that would take you listening to yourself and not some fucked up disc jockey with nothing to lose.
