22.Aug.2012 Yearly Fundraiser!

Hey guys, it's the day I hate most. The day when I ask for yearly donations! I think we have a good thing going with no ads, though. It fits with my "do what you want/nothing should be mandatory" philosophy of life, too. Let's try to keep it this way.

One more thing: this year (probably December, but maybe early next year) I will be having a $52,000 surgery to fix a bad bite with which I was born, and I don't have health insurance. If anyone wants to contribute to that, great. Just make a note in your donation if you want it to go toward that specific cause. If you write nothing I'll just assume you don't care which it goes toward. You might have realized I was slacking off a few months ago–it was because I got hit with the news I needed this surgery and went into a stupor. It's a grizzly surgery–they cut apart both jaws. So, that's that. "Life sucks, get a helmet", as Dennis Leary once said. I'll keep this post on top for a week, so look below it for new content.

Sounds like a bite issue I had. But instead of surgery I had a full mouth of cosmetic teeth put in. It costs the same, and looks nice. Most importantly the teeth reallignment worked in stopping headaches from bite strains, AND the release of tension corrected my vision substantially to where I no longer require glasses. Look into cosmetic dental reconstruction, my niece went with the surgery, fixed her bite but she still has got some British looking teeth and glasses. I think there are some doctors in Texas that are cheaper than Santa Barbara, might also save some bucks there. My dentist was a linebacker at Iowa, his office is in San Ramon.

Why go to Texas? Why not just go to Thailand and sit on a beach for recovery?

My issue is skeletal, unfortunately. It’s what they call a Class II skeleton. Bite can be fixed somewhat by moving teeth around, but really (and ideally) the bones must be moved for long-term stability of gums, bone, and teeth. If I just move teeth, I’ll likely lose all my teeth within 20 years (max) and have periodontal issues. I got dealt a bad hand–a Beaver fan and bad jaws!

I’d get a second opinnion and also see a cosmetic dentist, a good one(Consultations are free). And remember to plan the expense to be deducted on 1040 schedule A, Line 1 – It’ll make a big difference.

You’ll be able to get insurance pretty soon thru Obamacare right? As in, they won’t be able to deny you for a pre-existing condition.

This is somewhat correct. In 2014 if you do not on a group health plan then you should be able to go through your state’s “exchange”. The exchange rates will not vary based on your age or prior conditions. This may be the most economical way to go as I believe the max deductibles on the exchange plans will be $2k or less. It may be hard to wait, but if you can it could save you tens of thousands of $$.

Thanks. It was massively depressing for months, and I feel the site took a big hit (in my output) during those months. I’m shaking it off a little bit now…beginning to cope with it…coming out of the stupor. Remember last year I was writing long, thought-out pieces? That all stopped, and lately it has just been quips about the factual stuff going on. Not much analysis. The reason being I couldn’t think about much other than this. Hope that’s passed now….it comes and goes. Some days it really bothers me, some days I accept the fate. Lately I’ve been feeling okay, which is why the output has improved here.

So you’re needing your jaw bone moved to correct a severe over/under bite, correct?

    • angry says:
      VN:F [1.9.22_1171]
      Rating: 0 (from 0 votes)

That is correct. This is the exact procedure (though my lower jaw is not as recessed as hers)

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hl4onlHzuwA

I can go without it, but I’ll likely lose my teeth and develop apnea over the next decade…so, I think I’m going to go for it. I don’t like the idea of all that metal in my face, and there are some major complications (including death), but this is my fate.

The weird thing is I found out at age 35…over time my bite became very off (no canine guidance, open bite, etc), so I tried fixing that with braces. A few months into that it became clear the problem was greater–the jaws, not the teeth, were misaligned. Orthodontists try to fix this problem by moving teeth, but all that does is retrude the normally developed upper jaw. So the face is balanced from a profile view, but the jaw is smaller/recessed. This lack of space is what leads to apnea over time…the tongue gets pushed back into the airway. So the only comprehensive, long-term solution is surgery.

This is going to be a really bad year. Hopefully the Beavs are good because not much else will be hahah (other than my lovely girlfriend who has perfect jaws ..damn her!). I’m sort of terrified, to be honest. Jokes help.

Dentist: Just let me finish and you will be another man after these procedures.
Patient: Okay doc, but don’t forget to send your bill to the other man.

Yeah. Speaking of being another man…they tell me i’ll look totally different after the surgery. I’m trying to prepare for this. You get used to a certain face for decades…seems like it could be a psychological disaster (PTSD?) changing the face. They tell me it changes for the better, though. But historically I don’t cope with change too well. I also can’t shake the feeling that once you enter the medical establishment you never leave. Meaning, this problem, when fixed, will just lead to others. I’m trying to be optimistic…

Apnea is easily treatable, so if your concerned about that part don’t be. I would be much more worried about TMJ stuff.

I only have mild TMJ right now. Some clicking when I talk or chew difficult foods. The surgeon said that TMJ correction is not a given with this surgery. They try to seat the condyle bone properly to eliminate TMJ, but it could actually get worse. It’s definitely a concern. I’ve been doing a lot of research to see how at risk I am for that. The main motivator is that my tongue doesn’t seem to fit in my mouth properly. It’s hard to explain, but the best way to put it is the jaws feel recessed to the point I feel claustrophobic in my own skull. This happened after I started orthodontic treatment (for a bad bite) and they pulled my upper jaw back (which exposed the bad jaws). Originally I thought I’d just go in braces to fix the bite.

My dad had terrible apnea. He wore some mask and had a machine, and it still wasn’t treatable–he never slept. He also had a stroke at a young age.

I had carotid artery surgery recently (being an older fart and eating too much butter) and I am still fighting to keep the hospital financial office off my back. It seems that latino’s with no money get their medical paid for by Oregon but for a white male American who was laid off his job because of the great economic changes Obama promised, I do not qualify. Maybe if I cut down on my dogs food for a week I can send a small donation. Good luck and speedy recovery buddy.

Facts: 500,000+ latinos in Oregon. One third do not have health coverage of any kind–no employer or government provided health care whatsoever… none… nada. And their kids don’t qualify for Healthy Kids either.

I think you’re being a little unfair, Jack. Illigal immigrants without insurance still go to hospitals and many of them won’t pay. They’re not scheduling surgery, but a big reason for escalating healthcare costs is the poor person who goes to the ER and never pays. And they do have people like fightingbeaver who will pay for it. Oregon also pays to educate the children of illigal immigrants. I don’t know what the cost is in terms of crime committed by illigal immigrants, but my sense is that it’s very high – especially in Eastern Oregon (check out the Hermiston police log some day).

It sounds pretty stupid to place any of the blame on Obama though. So hypocritical.

Angry – I’ll donate on Monday.

Really? Someone called the cops on a goat? And Hermiston has a Fuddruckers?

People get sick and/or hurt. It’s a part of life. Doctors are in the business of healing people who are sick and/or hurt. If someone is sick and/or hurt, would suggest they go somewhere doctors do their jobs.

Bottom line… I don’t want anyone in my town to feel they can’t go to the hospital to cure their contagious disease. That disease will affect me and my life, and that’s a tax I don’t want to pay.

Emergency room bill defaults don’t even rate in the top ten drivers of medical care inflation. Tech, preventable disease (related to obesity, smoking, drinking, age), admin costs, Medicare Schedule D (on top of Big Pharma making up “diseases” to sell their useless research) and malpractice insurance because 3% of all doctors account for 65% of all malpractice and the AMA shuffles them around like they’re pedophile priests instead of just canning their asses.

There’s a reason the US rates about #40 in health care yet pays more than twice what any other country does per capita on such a shitty product. Hell, we pay more for health care than we do for food.

          That’s just wrong.

The F-22 and F-35 combined with the “War on drugs” give me little return. Add vulture funds and black ops which counter-act our national interests for some whipped topping.

Angry: Is the problem really so bad that you can’t wait until 2014 when the insurance companies are no longer allowed to be shitheads? In the meanwhile, you could also look into the government’s temporary Pre-Existing Condition Plan (pcip.gov). They’ll give you insurance for a pretty reasonable price as long as you can show you’ve been rejected from other commercial insurance. I’m in a similar boat as you, so I know how scary all of this is. Was born with a genetic disorder that gives me a massive pre-disposition to cancer… no private insurance company will touch me because of it. To top it off, my current university provides the entire student body very crappy health insurance; it caps out at $2000 per illness per year, which of course is a drop in the bucket for anything. However, as long as you’re enrolled here, you can’t opt out of the crappy health insurance, and terrible though it is, the government’s PCIP plan considered it ‘creditable coverage’. Thus, no PCIP for me. I basically have no health insurance, and no access to the one program that is supposed to help me.

Since I recently had my own health scare (bled out of my ass to the point that they thought I was going to need a blood transfusion as I’d lost so much), I’ve got my own medical bills to deal with. Otherwise I’d be clicking the donate button. Maybe life will be more stable next year. Either way, please keep up the site; it’s a bright spot for me.

Oh yeah, I forgot to address why public health care isn’t really an option.
Basically, my bite started going bad almost two years ago, so I’ve been in braces 1.5 years already trying to fix it. The longer someone is in braces, the more risk they have to something called “root absorption”, which is just what it sounds like–the tooth’s root dissolves into the bone. So keeping braces on another two years is risky. Maybe I could ask if they could take the wire off and put on a light retainer, though. Never thought of that option. I’ll ask.

One other thing about, though: the surgery is considered ‘cosmetic’ (even tho it’s not–this is just a reason to reject patients) by many, so I’m not even sure it would be covered, and if it were covered, it’s not a surgery you want a government doctor assigned to perform–you really need a doc you’re comfortable with because he’s going to be rearranging your face. You know that saying “close enough for government work”??… I’d be going into the surgery terrified, and that’s not a mindset to be in. I’ve seen patients on the Canadian health care system, who got this same surgery, get absolutely butchered (one girl I spoke with had her jaws moved 10mm too far forward and looked like an ape/couldn’t open her jaws). Her bone in the TMJ joint absorbed because of the poor positioning/compression.

Medical holidays to places like Mexico, Thailand and India are becoming more common since the health care industry in America has broken itself. A surgery/vacation to SE Asia can cost 40-50% of just the surgery in the US. And the surgeons are trained in US schools and hospitals.

Canada is no worse per surgery as far as mistakes are concerned. In fact, they’re better at culling the bad surgeons due to regulations and governmental liabilities. The US has become a system of specialists who cater only to those who can pay. If you’re willing to pay or go into debt (not a choice if you have an accident) you get pretty good to great service. But below the cream is the same milk you’ll find everywhere else. And the cream has increasingly left for destinations like Mexico and Thailand for the same reasons patients leave the US.

A second and third opinion should be got if you have not already. A sleep doctor(preferably Stanford trained) should also be at least consulted. I know the doctors at Stanford Sleep Center also perform the surgery, so might be a good option. I know these are somewhat expensive, but that surgery could really fuck up your life if not done properly and may not even correct your potential apnea/TMJ issue. I know the statistics on surgery to correct apnea has a very low success rate in general(although I realize your teeth are also an issue, apnea can literally kill you). I have severe sleep apnea myself, and finally found a good Stanford trained physician and am being treated successfully with an AutoBiPAP machine. My brother has had the http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/sleep-apnea/uvulopalatopharyngoplasty-for-obstructive-sleep-apnea#hw48960 surgery(which is different then yours) with no success. He is using a CPAP and some drugs to help him. Although his case is pretty severe. In any case feel free to contact me if you have any questions that you think I might be able to help with. Have been dealing with this for the past 15-20 years.

Angry, do you actually control the Angrybeavs twitter account? A photo of Reser was tweeted by Mike Riley’s account and Angrybeavs replied that the lettering and logo was bush league and is why we only go to mediocre bowls (if any). That’s one of the dumbest things I have seen related to this site. This site is usually pretty quality in terms of analysis, but the font used in the endzone has nothing to do with two poor seasons. Didn’t we have the same logo/lettering from 2006-2009?

Even if it did have an impact, placing the blame on Mike Riley is fucking ignorant. He’s just the coach.

Yes. Riley proudly tweeting about our Bush League design is a symptom of the problems.

@Coach_Riley Font looks horrible. That angry muskrat looks bush league. No wonder we go to mediocre bowls (if any)

I never said he designed the logo or font. What I am getting at is that his thinking it’s a good look and supporting a bad design both confirms the mediocrity and cluelessness and keeps it in perpetual motion. Without people willing to bash that crap it’ll remain the same.

Get the angry muskrat off the field, give us a checkered endzone, throw some orange paint on the fieldgoal posts, etc. There are simple things that can be done to make the field stand out and give reason to actually be proud about it, but there isn’t a single outside the box/creative soul in Corvallis.

Don’t worry, he blocked me. Gotta silence the critics like that since they can’t do it on the field!

Riley has stated publicly that his favorite restaurant in Corvallis is Evergreen, an Indian food joint that isn’t bad at all.

What does a hamburger have to do with football?
The stadium has a lot to do with football, especially recruiting…if the coach is proud of his Bush League stadium/logos then it does show a problem, unless this hamburger joke/analogy you’re trying to make.

They have nothing to do with football. I was using an admittedly extreme example. My point is that I think Riley’s design aesthetic when it comes to the logos on the field is not particularly relevant, and the post struck me as reaching. I think we should care slightly more about his view of the logo than we should his dining preferences, but only slightly more so. The comment about orange goal posts and checkerboard endzones just betrays how truly subjective and silly the entire argument is, as I happen to find both of those ideas pretty stupid from a design perspective.

You say bushleague “stadium/logos” in the reply–you would have a much better point if Riley was advocating use of a high school stadium for OSU football, but I took the tweet to just be focusing on the new logos.

I think this back and forth is going to make too much of your original post, but who really gives a shit if Riely likes the new logos!

I don’t really give a shit, which is why I wrote it to Riley on Twitter rather than making a post about it…

Remember: someone else brought it up here, not me.

I still don’t see anything wrong with our field… if we did orange checkerboard, we’d be Tennessee. I think we all agree that ish like beaver biceps and logger Randy are ridiculously stupid, and we probably ought to push for changes to the low hanging fruit before we go after something that a majority of the people aren’t bothered by.

It’s that ugly angry muskrat which looks so much like a beaver that we have to write “Beavers” underneath it in that ugly, inconsistent 70′s cursive font.

And it’s brown. We have a big poop smear with eyes and teeth in the middle of our field. Besides the morons who have recently thought black was their new school color, how many schools use color schemes outside their official colors?

How many schools voluntarily use brown on their uniforms and logos of those who voluntarily use some new color scheme?

I’d agree with that. The logo looks crappy, but the endzones are the least of our concerns and the field actually does look better now that the turf covers the entire surface.

Aye, Aye, Aye. This used to be about sports. The medical discussion belongs here but analysis of twitter comments and restaurant choices of Riley are like discussing how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. Since Poyer and Reynolds have been laying low in scrimmages, does anyone know who is in the competition for cb? Are the qbs/wrs/tes that good or have the scrimmages exposed a weakness that will be exploited by the spread offenses? The nickel and backup corner backs ( and safeties) appear to be the guys that will make or break the season for the Beavers.

Did anyone read Canzano’s puff piece on Riley. He told me in London that he was going to “look into the Riley situation”. Talk about phoning it in.

What we learned today was: Riley doesn’t like music at practice, he likes to have lunch with his wife and he loves his mom. No one has ever doubted that Riley is a “nice guy”. I wish I hadn’t wasted the three minutes it took to read that pablum, should have rearranged my sock drawer instead.

I still have no real feel for where this team is or will be. I guess it’s a wait and see proposition. JB

I didn’t read the piece, but listened to Canzano’s interview with Riley yesterday on the BFT. Way too much focus on the music and waterballon fight elements, as if those are part of some master plan. I think the more fundamental change was the decision to slow things down, focus more on details, and try to avoid injuries with less live interaction between the two sides. Adding music struck me as something that came up from the younger assistants and players and RIley went along with it, and the waterballoon fight was a one-time deal, the product of having been practicing in a heat wave and Riley being gone for the funeral that day.

Who knows, maybe there was more to it than that (or maybe I just missed part of the interview), but Canzano was spinning it on his show as if Riley’s big plan for turning this season around was to let the players have fun via music and waterballoon fights.

In trying to get past the fluff (been a lot of that here lately) in Canzano’s piece I found the words “refocused” and “humbled” applied to MR.

The conclusion that, “What I heard on Wednesday was a coach who understands his legacy is at stake, and also, realizes how intertwined his approach and his results end up being.” could be significant if actually true.

These items point to a new, more serious attitude on the part of Riley. A necessary and very good change if actually true. BTW, I’ll take Riley calling plays as a sign that it is true.

This team will be good if:
1.It can stop/slow the run on first down
      2. It can stop/slow red zone passing
3.FB/TE provide short yardage blocking consistently
4.Special teams have consistent punting/field goal kicking
5.They can avoid major injuries where depth is thin

Most of the other areas will be highly competitive against all opponents.
