Ranking the 2018 class (Late Signees)

125

The early signees are here: http://angrybeavs.com/rankings/13575

I’m seeing some boom and bust with these late guys. Top heavy, and then a bunch of speculative prospects.

Matthew Tago **** – Only 4-star talent I see in this class. Really good size and athleticism. Speed isn’t great, but he’s no Pankey in that department, either, and should be fine.

Jermer Jefferson *** – Solid all around back, though nothing special stands out on film. He lacks breakaway speed and doesn’t have great cutting ability, but he’s highly productive playing strong competition.

Ronald Audette ** – This guy’s strength stands out. Yeah, you could say he’s playing vs small guys, but it’s still hard to toss one like a rag doll. Fun highlight film where his helmet is flying off in the snow and he’s blowing dudes up. Rough looking prospect in terms of his body type, but his strength stands out.

Jeromy Reichner ** High 2 star. Terrible offer sheet of Rhode Island and OSU, but at times he looks aggressive and explosive on film. At times his blocker simply misses him and makes him look good. So, tough read.
John McCartan ** 3 star prospect as a TE. 1 star on defense. Hate him on D. As a TE he looks a bit like Jimmy Graham. Very fluid and large.

Joshua Gray ** – He has a solid offer sheet, but upon watching his film nothing stands out, and he looks a bit maladroit. I feel I’m missing something since he has so many good offers…?

Jaden Robinson ** – Plays the ball well, finishes the interceptions, and shows good hands (no surprise since he’s also a WR). Lacks elite speed and agility you want in a CB, but looks like a decent player. Very bad offer sheet doesn’t make me feel better about what I’m seeing. He’ll have to outwork guys to be successful.

Jack Colletto ** – This guy has a rag arm and throws pumpkins, but he can run a bit and seems to have good accuracy. Also comes from a winning program and is intelligent. As I mentioned in a prior thread, I’m hoping Colletto is the under-recruited guy we always see on other teams and wonder why we didn’t recruit him (e.g. Luke Falk, Kellen Moore, et al). I can see him being productive even though he’s unorthodox. I can also see him getting completely annihilated by P-12 competition. Speculative QB get where you’re hoping, and as I like to say “hope is not a strategy.” I do like what I see better than Luton.

Semisi Saluni – Mission guy who we will never see until he’s 25 playing for BYU. Not worth the offer and not worth our time analyzing.

      • Agreed Marc. My all time favorite movie, bar none. It wasn’t until I’d watched it for the third time that I realized it had nothing to do with breaking out of a prison cell.

“So many men live in sad circumstances yet will not take the initiative to change because they are conditioned by a life of security, conformity and conservatism, all of which might appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit of a man than a secure future.” – Alexander Supertramp

    • You’re correct, there’s no way he can lob a gord the size of a pumpkin 50 yards on the fly like that, but large squash lobber just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

        • I’m just messing with you.

He’s a big strong kid from a winning program. Wether he’s lobbing pumpkins or footballs, an arm that can huck it on target 50 yards off his back foot is strong enough for me. He has a funky throwing motion, but a decent touch and some ability to scramble and make things happen. I hope he has the moxie, instincts and ability to become our Big Ben without all the rape.

Go Crazy Legs! I’m rooting for you!

          • Crazy Leg. Crazy Leg Colletto. Sounds like a mobster that kicks people into submission or worse.

            Lobbin’ pumpkins and kickin’ ass.

On another topic, does Lindgren have the QB take snaps from under center sometimes?

And no center in this class?

          • Based off memory of watching his Colorado offense I only remember them being out of the gun. Maybe there was some short yardage stuff run under center but not often. It will being interesting to see what the combined offensive minds come up with. Plus that Idaho State analyst they brought in is supposed to be pretty sharp too.

          • I’m warming up to him. His AZ western tape looks much better. Ball has some zip on it.. And he stands up tall AF in the pocket. He very well might be our best option at the moment.

    • Yes, let’s listen to the coach who took the second best Pac O (on paper) and managed to be better than only Cal and OSU during the season as we watch tape on a kid throwing the ball as high as he throws it far. It’s like he’s throwing BBs… straight in the air… so his HS receivers can run under them with all their P5 speed.

Next you’re going to tell me we should go get Cal’s OC… because they were better than OSU’s O too.

  1. I saw where Nemec posted an article that OSU finished 12th in the Pac12 for recruiting. I’ll bet that gave Nemec a hard on…..he probably couldn’t wait to post that piece of information. What a Schmuck !

    • Well it IS a pretty horrible class. With most of these guys, you have to hope they develop by year 3 or 4. Very few will be legit Pac players before then. Under a handful of impact players. Coaches made their jobs harder by recruiting that type of athlete. Now they have to work doubly hard to “coach ’em up”.

In other words, Riley is back in town.

      • What did you expect after a 1-11 season with a completely new coaching reaffirmed in December…it’s not like great recruits are lining up to play for OSU. Like I previously posted, getting this team competitive is going to take time….3-4 years…GA gutted the program and Smith is going to suffer through some very difficult seasons. It usually takes a full recruiting cycle to see major progress.

        • I disagree. GA landed better recruits than these. He just couldn’t land a QB.
If these guys can coach up GA’s guys and figure out QB (I’m honestly not sure at this point, but my motto is “anyone but Luton”) then things will begin upward.

          • Does it matter though? Almost none of GA’s highlight reel monsters ever played a down at OSU. You can recruit all the athletic freaks you want, but if they can’t get into schoool, it’s still an empty recruiting class.

The GA days were more fun on signing day, but we knew from JS’s coaching staff this probably wasn’t going to be a fantastic class. This is going to be the norm under this regime because the focus was clearly on teachers over salesmen.

          • Who said anything about highlight reel monsters?

We have juniors and sophs who have logged a ton of time because Bikey sucks as a coach. That youth excuse gets old after a couple years, but it doesn’t make it any less true. Our RS frosh will be better than this class. Luton is wayyyyy better than Colletto. There are some good players and athletes who will take some work but end up giving production from this class. It’s just what it is.

  2. I womder if Brock Purdy will be the one that got away? We gave up on him right after the Bama offer and a home visit around the same time. But he ends up at Iowa State, where he will rarely play games near where his family lives. At least with OSU he would have had a good chance to start from the outset and games in Arizona or Socal every year.

      • Yeah, was just thinking Petras flipped on his own. Purdy we just gave up on while visiting him. Scared off by the Alabama offer like it was a battle not worth fighting.

        • With Ohio State being the first game of the season, I’m sure the logic was short and long term, hence JS saying they wanted JC guys who will have more than 2 years of eligibility coming into Oregon State; they got that with Jack Colletto. We will lose to Ohio State, but by how much is uncertain until we see how this team plays in the spring game. Is it me, or do the players we signed for OL/DL not as big of a project as when Riley & Co. would try to go after projects? Really all these players need to do is bulk up in the weight room, fundamentals and schemes. They get that down in 2 years, they will be really good by their Redshirt Junior year. If the coaches can land more ready to go players next recruiting cycle, that would be ideal, but not expected until we start winning.

          • Nope.

This O-line class is raw and not nearly as good as last year’s O-line class. But we can take raw developmental guys because of last year’s group.

I still don’t know if Audette is an O-lineman. The tape on him as a lineman shows he’s really grabby. His only other move besides grabbing defenders is to be punchy. I don’t see any of that working where a ref flags him (on his highlight plays) and big P5 players don’t take it from him like the little people on his highlight reel did.

  3. Also, I get the impression that TMP to Corvallis is dying or dead. Oregon seems to have rerouted that pipeline, if you can call it that

  4. “This guy has a rag arm and throws pumpkins, but he can run a bit and seems to have good accuracy.”

Did you see what we had under Anderpants? I’LL TAKE IT!

    • “Did you see what we had under Anderpants? I’LL TAKE IT!”

Rumors say it was a cheerleader……..I’ll take one as well.

      • Yeah but we didn’t originally recruit him. He was a Hawaii committ.

I’m not opposed to recruiting kids coming back from their mission, but it seems the ones we sign pre-mission never end up here when they come back.

        • Agree, but the only reason they had an opportunity with Lavaka is because the coaches here at the time tried to recruit him prior to the mission.

          • Which adds to the argument that getting the “commitment” from mission guys doesn’t matter, it’s just building the relationship and maintaining it over time.

          • I agree that obtaining the commitment from a recruit that will show up 2 years later allows for a lot to time for the recruit to change their mind.

You do not recruit a player so you can come in second and be the team that picks them up 2 years later. You are recruiting to get the commitment now. The other fallacy in the argument is if you always assume that a mission commit will go elsewhere then you would never even start recruiting them. So players like Lavaka would not be in play because you never invested any time in them. The point I made was you cannot start the relationship after the mission and expect the players to choose us.

  5. Not sure what you mean by Robinson lacking elite speed. He ran a 10.7 100 meter dash. This would immediately make him one of the fastest on the team. I would guess it would have to do with how quick he starts or something else.

  6. I just rewatched Crazy Legs senior tape. I am almost sold on him as the starter next year. He may be Niner’s salvagable qb plan for the initial phase of the rebuild. The leg kick disappears after just seeing how quick he gets rid of the ball, takes some good shots but still delivers the ball, looks off the secondary a few times, throws accurately to the sideline, throws deep without much effort, has touch on the deep throw and zips it into the window on the slants, and on qb zone read he has good speed.
It is all highlights but I actually was surprised watching with an open mind, knowing he went 14-0 and won the big school state championship in WA.

  7. I really like your accessment. I would put two guys up much higher, and those two would be grey and jaden Robinson.

3* for both. I feel like grey just has an insane amount of athleticism for his size. And jaden, with how minimal he has played, I really believe his ceiling is very high. Excited to see his future.

I think the most under rated kid overall tho is dishon wilson. I really think he will be one of the best corners in Oregon state history by the time he leaves… just my two cents.

Also, I want to add, I know I’m all over the map on this, but I personally think Tago should be an inside backer. I think that’s his real future and I think he also could be one of the if not the best inside backer we’ve ever had by the time he is done as well.

    • I watched Grey twice because I thought he should be higher given his offer sheet. I just wasn’t seeing it. I always have a few guys wrong each class, so he’s a good candidate. I did give him 2.5 stars if you look, so I was on the fence. Robinson looks good with his ball skills, but guys were catching him (even in the open field), which isn’t good for a CB.

      • Evaluating O linemen based on highlight film is hard, because consistency matters way more than what the peaks of your effectiveness look like.

I see a tall, lean athlete with a good work ethic. I don’t think you can conlcude much more than that. He needs to put on weight. If he can do that, maybe we’ll get a chance to see what kind of an OT he is.

His “official” star ratings are probably just based on his physical gifts and offer sheet.

        • Agree, had a hard time analyzing him.
Some of it was I knew his offer sheet and was biased to want to believe he’s very good, but personally I wasn’t seeing the athleticism mentioned. In the film he’s way undersized for line play, too, so he doesn’t look the part. He’s the only guy I’ve ever given a 2.5 rating because of all these issues I had analyzing him. I want to see him once he puts on the weight to play OL at this level.

          • There aren’t many OL that move like he does in the open field. That’s the athleticism I’m seeing.

There are just so many questions related to that, though. Does it translate into matching up well against athletic DE’s? Can he maintain it when he weighs 290-300 instead of 235?

          • I see him running down the field but he doesn’t look great doing it to me. I guess he does to you. That’s fine. Again, we’re not always going to agree, and I’m not going to get every guy right. Most people agree with you because he has a good offer sheet.

Since I don’t love him at 235lbs I have no idea how to project him at 285.

  8. Funny I had a completely different take on McCarran. Thought he looks good on d and just average on o. I like his pursuit and tackling. He has good size as well for a 3-4 olb.

  9. I feel like the key isn’t how talented any of these guys are now, it’s how many of them stay their entire career. Colorado won 10 games a couple years ago with poor recruits that stuck around 4 or 5 years and developed.

      • Yup….Smith needs to cut that time in half. Need to have 10 wins (can include bowl win) every 2-3 years to keep the fan-base excited. Unlike Smilin’ Mike who got us 10 wins one time by playing 13 games if I recall correctly. I don’t mind the occasional losing season as long as that losing season is the bottom and the next year or two get double digit wins.

    • CU had a great defensive backfield and a decent DL two years ago. Three of their DBs are NFL players, and the true soph from that year will be a first round pick this year. They also have NFL tweeners all over their O-line, including the one (Irwin?) who will be a pro. They also had Lindsay (sp?) ru for almost 1500 yards despite their scheme just sucking. Their two WRs are pretty good too.

They just don’t have a scheme that succeeds when they don’t have a QB who make it up on the fly. MacIntyre was lucky enough to beat us and save his job last year. That coincidental 10 win season bought him a lot more time than I would give him.

      • You may be right on the scheme only being effective with a free wheeling QB but Lindgren was also the O coordinator for Macintyre when San Jose State went 11-2. There is some history of success at least.

        • It’s a stretch to give Lindgren credit for that season SJSU finished second in the WAC… behind Utah State. I’d give Mike Riley more credit. The guy who recruited David Fales after Forcier left school was only hired there because Brennan was hired as the WR coach here.

SJSU was weird during MacIntyre’s time there. They wouldn’t commit to their program when Tomey was there, and they suffered APR losses from the roster on top of not supplying a full roster. MacIntyre is good for one thing, and that’s instilling discipline in academics. He rides the optimism of his hire and the subsequent bump in recruiting from his early years. Then he has one great season. He left SJSU before he faded there. He’s fading at CU now.

I’ve never been sold on Lindgren. He’s the one head-scratcher on this staff for me.* I saw what his team could do against Cory Hall’s OSU Beavs.

*Bikey on staff is not a head-scratcher. It’s a predictable “fuck life” from the pollyannas… simply an obscenity.

  10. At the end of the day I think this class lays a foundation to build off of. Yes, I agree that many won’t be starters for more than a year or 2 and most likely would benefit from redshirting but considering they went 1-11 and had all the coaching turmoil I think the class turned out about as you’d expect.

I like the focus they had on lineman and longer defensive players. I think we may be pleasantly surprised by how this class develops.

The real test is what they do with next years class. I don’t expect a top 25 class but I think they need to be around the top 40 or I might lose faith.

  11. Maybe somone who attended the signing day dinner(like beaverkman) can elaborate, but Ive heard from 2 different people that Riley received a bigger round of applause than anybody at the event, including Coach Smith.

  12. Hey, Riley Sharp is coming back from mission to be a Beav. Great news. Thought he was a great looking pass catching TE coming out of HS.

  13. Somebody messaged me to tell me that Kesi Ah-hoy and Shemia Unutoa-Whitson are medically retiring. Anybody else hearing anything?
Sucks if true, i really liked Kesi and thought he was one of the top guys from the 2017 class.

    • Cheetoe’s Head, “clean coal, it’s beautiful.” I can’t wait to see the Nazi-like military parade that Hitler, I mean Trump is planning, Tanks, rockets, jets flying overhead….just like in Nazi Germany to galvanize the masses…yes. The only question is….when will his cheetos shirts start roughing up and rounding up those that jeer at the cheeto head? I sure hope he brings to the parade that big button that works….you know, the “mine is bigger syndrome.” Maybe he can have Stormy Daniels right by his side or underneath the podium providing inspiration for him. My guess is he has a pair cheetos balls too.

        • If you mean hyperventilate and foam at the mouth over every “little thing”….such as threatening nuclear war, imposing high import tarrifs, reverting back to pre-WWII foreign policies, obstruction of justice, collusion with Russia and Vlady (Putin’s pet name for Trump is his little PutinTang), energy and environmental policies that will set this country back 100 years, etc., etc., etc., then I suppose many Americans are hyperventilating for very good reason unless you’re one of those oblivious to reality supporters of Trump. Trump will go down as one of the worst President’s in the history of this great country if he doesn’t end up erasing our history altogether.

          • Trump is the ultimate SJW. He just picks losers at a higher rate and volume… and screeches about all of it constantly. It would be funny if he wasn’t in a position that commands respect due to it being the fucking US of A. He’s a third world strongman in a loser-dumbshit’s body. It’s like the CIA ruined our country then put this puppet in power so they could black bag the shit out of us.

          • Thankfully, he’s too stupid to realize that the couple honorable and intelligent people he did hire can flush the rest of the losers and hangers-on or diminish their capacity to do any real harm. He’ll be a loser of a footnote in history, just like Warren Harding… so much like Warren Harding.

      • Ah, some Trump supporters don’t like hearing the truth. Well, the truth is, Trump is an arrogant a-hole who has no business being the President. That said, the only thing I’ll give him credit for is clearly showing that our political system is a complete mess, but most of us already knew that before the Ooompa Loompa took office.

    • I’m not sure what you’re saying. Trump has promised bad policy up and down the board. Corporate welfare is right in line with his underwhelming train of thought. He thinks he can buy votes because he’s convinced fellow dumbshits that he’s not a fraud and a douche tool and a sexual predator who will just do what Wall Street tells him to do in the end.
