  1. Great, I was just reading about Peko today and was impressed with his offer list. On Scout, Beavs have some pretty good athletes with “high” interest. Too bad about Henry, I was hoping with height and reach OSU would have another effective DE in the pipeline.

  2. I am liking this class so far. I would like to see one more corners and d-tackles. What about OLBs? I don’t know a whole lot about the ones on our roster right now after Welch and Doctor. Are we solid there or do we need some more?

  3. Definitely more LBs I think. The fact that Bray said if more LBs were executing in practice would mean more would play in games says a lot. I also think Mafi, who looks like a reach, may need to be replaced.

Interesting note on the quality of this class, Scout was rating them all solid 3*s for what its worth, saying they only needed senior film on MLB Preston and he would likely be bumped up from a 2*. There’s the unknown OL from Samoa, but everyone else is 3*. Rivals looks to rate them about the same. I don’t think Riley has put together a class with those kind of appraisals across the board.

Another DT and some OLBs would be great, maybe a running QB. I was hoping they’d pull in Combs at DT, but apparently he’s going to Kansas.

  4. PureOrange poster says DeLaSalle’s Austin Hooper is set to visit Oregon State at some point, but I can’t find any other mention of it on other sites.

  5. Anybody know which 5 teams Dashon Hunt has on his short list?

Scout has an article up saying as much and says he has a date set for his announcement.

  6. Zak Pettit of Truckee (Ca), 6’4″, 235# DE/LB/TE.

Truckee plays in Nevada football leagues because of geography. Zak’s brother Jake is also a senior, and he has many of the same attributes… maybe even a little meaner than Zak. But he’s only 6’3″, 210# (or so… looks a little bigger). Put 30 or 40 pounds on Jake and build a legit West Coast FB.

Put another 20 or 30 on Zak, and you have a mean defensive baller.

  7. I’m still committed to Angrybeavs, but plan on taking some official visits to other sites “just to be sure.”
BeaverByte has offered to let me walk-on.

  8. Seems like the Beavers are doing pretty good at addressing needs. Just need to pick up some high upside HS kids now particularly at OLB and DE. Then add whatever talent we can find. I am still hoping for a surprise game changer at RB but that is looking unlikely.

  9. @AngieMachado1
Sequoias CB @Nelson_Island has officially signed his LOI to play for #OregonState. He’ll have 3 years to play 2 at OSU. More @BeaverBlitz

I know Peko said he would wait until Feb, but will not take any more visits.

  10. @BrandonHuffman
Arizona Western LB D’Vante Henry said last night he was leaning heavily towards West Virginia and today, he committed there. 3-for-2 Juco.

    • I called the Alamo Bowl Committee directly and I got 2 Club level 20 yard line tickets for $90 each. I paid $6.00 for priority mail and I received them in 2 days. Very nice people to deal with. Staying at Marriott Riverwalk.

    • Might sound hyper-critical, but in a majority of those highlights they are adjusting to the ball, even when open. Can you imagine if the QB’s could have hit them in stride on a consistent basis?

I hope Mullaney recovers and is ready for fall. Gilmore sounds intriguing, and there’s another 6’4″ WR coming in this class. I’m hoping Bolden can fill in on the fly sweeps and as a part time receiver. He’s not as fast as Cooks, but he seems like he might be faster/quicker than everyone after Cooks.

‘Boom to DE? Maybe he can use those mitts to club o-lineman…his first step doesn’t look to quick though.

Cooks is clearly the man next year, but I think we should see more from Hamlett and Smith at the TE spot to fill in, and the #2 WR not being what Cooks/Wheaton was. Who knows, maybe Mullaney is so good with his routes he just gets it done.

Back to recruiting, according to Scout, OSU offering Khari McGee, a dual-threat QB, and they’re listing Del Rio with a strong interest in Alabama (no offer yet), none in his other offers. I doubt the football tradition or southern girls are tempting…

LB still a need, and as is finding a job for Bray. I’d hate to see OSU return to the linebacking hole they had with Pankey/Kristic etc..

    • Boom looks like a kid that grew up playing basketball. He just doesn’t have the physicality and aggressive nature that comes with playing a contact sport. If he won’t fight for the ball at wide receiver I don’t see him coming up with the violence required to play DE.

      • Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates would probably tell you Obum never played hoops just by watching him play. If he did (and he never did) play hoops, they would tell you he could probably catch a ball.

Jimmy Graham, Todd Heap, Terrell Owens and Cris Carter might tell you the same thing. Martellus Bennett and Julius Peppers just couldn’t hack the hardwood and gave it up eventually. And I’m sure I could come up with a bunch of other football players who played hoops as well… including maybe the 1993 and 1962 Heisman Trophy winners. College football was obviously too violent for them.

        Thanks for playing. Come again.

        • Hands O stone. Not good for B-ball. May be like McCants? Seems like he should be good, but it does not come together. Hopefully he surprises us all.

        • I don’t know Jack, Lamarcus Aldridge has had a pretty decent career so far with out being able to catch a basketball. The guy drops and bobbles more passes than any player that I can remember.

          • LaMarcus actually has some good hands. Him not having good hands and not being a good dribbler are different. Him and Wesley Matthews have the same problem, but Matthews is a guard and dribbling is kind of more important for a guard.

          • Maybe I need to watch more Blazer games, It seems like every time he has a difficult time catching cleanly and it could be him being surprised by a pass.

        • Comprehension fail.

I never said Boom played basketball. I said he reminds me of the big athletic guys who don’t like to go outside and play in the rain and take hits in a physical game. If a guy plays football and basketball then that’s different than being a little bitch who wants to stay inside and play badminton and basketball.

          • You’re talking about a football player playing football.

            That’s pretty much it.

If you think he plays like a hoopster, then you should show us all how he catches the ball every damn time it’s thrown to him, as is expected of even the worst hoopsters out there.

          • Nah, rugby players are tough too. I’d even put soccer players ahead of basketball.

As usual you’re missing my point. Boom plays like a guy who grew up playing non contact sports. Guys who grew up playing football and smear the queer with their brothers and friends expect contact and fight to catch and keep the ball. Guys who grew up playing basketball and volleyball inside with the girls don’t.

It’s like when a wrestler gets in his first street fight and can’t believe that he just got fish hooked in the eye socket and punched in the nuts.

          • Let me try to settle this: Youre saying that Boom is soft. You explain this by using bball as an example, because you think basketball is a soft sport. Jack here doesn’t think bball is that soft of a sport, so hes not seeing your point. You’d be better off saying he looks like a high jumper trying to play big boy football, which he is.

            10 points for me?

          • “Boom plays like a guy who grew up playing non contact sports.”

            Yes… football.

“It’s like when a wrestler gets in his first street fight and can’t believe that he just got fish hooked in the eye socket and punched in the nuts.”

Those happen in pick up games all the time. Throw in a couple sharp elbows to the head and ribs and an undercut while you’re three feet in the air… and some four guys bigger than an NFL LB coming down on you on a lay-up because “if you’re going to go inside, you’re going to pay the price.”

Your argument isn’t even an argument.

I played noon-ball with an actual football player when I was in high school. Me, him, a local college hoops coach and some old profs of various shapes and sizes. This guy got clobbered on a lay-up despite him being an actual linebacker, and he came out of it with a bloody scalp, two dislocated fingers and a broken toe.

It was pretty weird watching some 5’9″ balding man with sports glasses and pot-belly apologize over and over to this NFL linebacker for hurting him so badly.

Oh yeah… did I forget to tell you he was an NFL All-Pro in the 80’s?

            Sorry… it wasn’t important anyway.

Obum plays like a bad football player… end of story. He wouldn’t even make a bad hoopster because we all see he can’t catch the ball… as you are expected to do with minimal failure some 40 to fifty times in a game… if you never dribble.

          • So in Jack’s world basketball is MMA mixed with rugby mixed with bullfighting.

I’ve watched a decent amount of basketball. Never seen these flying uppercut back flip spin kicks you speak of. The fact that an NFL linebacker fell down and hurt himself playing street ball means two things: jack and shit. Ballet dancers can get tangled up and fall down. Doesn’t mean it’s some tough physical sport.

Go back inside and play with the girls. You wouldn’t want to get muddy or take a real hit.

          • That spooge oozing out your backside looks like words strung together to mean something, but you’ve strayed so far from this argument that hyperbole wouldn’t come close to what you’ve created.

          • Homophobic?

Now you’re just high. What you’re effusing is so ridiculously off-topic and diversionary that it goes beyond hot air. And it’s all coming out of your backside. Since it’s anything but solid and too ridiculous to even be hot air, this must just be the diarrhea of your soul. Any liquid effusing from the body is called spooge… especially when it’s oozing onto something relatively clean, like a simple discussion about false analogies.

You want to make it personal and take umbrage just because you were way wrong to start out? Fine.

But knock off the misogyny, or I’ll send my niece over there to slap you around… you foul-minded, sick little soulless pile of wannabe manhood.

If you have played football, then you have proven yourself wrong. You’re no man.

If you sincerely apologize to women, I’ll apologize to your woman-hating, ranting self. I thought this was just a silly, sloppy game of words for your amusement, but I won’t be silent against your insults toward females.

          • You talk about spooge leaking out of asses and I’m foul minded?

Calling a guy a bitch and a pussy is in no way mysoginy. Hell, girls at least go outside and play soccer in the mud. Can’t say the same for pansy ass basketball players. So in a way I suppose it is insulting to women to lump pantywaist men in with them.

          • I talk of the relative value of your words. And you put on your “O” face.

I correct you, and you insult women… quite clearly insult them, btw.

Now you see how silly and boring this argument is?

You started off comparing apples to oranges. Then you went on to compare apples to dimensional lumber, and you thought it was relevant? Words usually have meaning. Yours have none… except to attempt to piss off females.

And now apparently you’re going after what you perceive as effeminate men? Pantywaist? Really?

Are you going to start linking porn and telling us to “look at the gams on that skirt?”

Sheesh! You can’t walk for tripping over your own words.

“Calling a guy a bitch and a pussy is in no way mysoginy.”

Yes it is. If you don’t think so, then I misread you. You’re clearly sexist. You rant about “real men” and call those you don’t believe are so a “bitch” or a “pussy?” And you think it’s not misogyny? You remove the reality of a person’s existence and you use derogatory terms toward them in order to liken them to a segment of society you think is inferior. You go so far as to say say “girls” in your rant.

Are you this much a jerk to the women in your life? Or do you save this garbage for your online persona?

          • Regarding your wrestling comment, street fights, in theory, are boxing-esque fist fights but in reality are actually a lot more like wrestling matches. So i’d much rather have a wrestler on my side in a street fight than some hot shot who thinks hes money mayweather.

          • Yeah boxers end up about the same. I’ve also seen TKD blackbelts and Thai boxers go down in flames. I’d imagine it’s the rules that have been ingrained in those guys training that ultimately undoes them.

  11. So next year the DTs are going to be Bennet-Jackson, Collins, Lopez, all relatively small for DT, with Tago (big, quick, but very green to football), maybe Rosa’s gone, and these new JC guys thrown in – Hautau, Peko?

Another DT seems like a good idea.

    • Nice find Jack. I guess I might get to eventually retire the “ncaa_viOlation” name after all, but sounds like it’s still a ways off.

So am I understanding this correctly? basically UO and the NCAA couldn’t come to what is essentially a plea bargain, so now they’re likely to go to trial? That’s pretty bad news for UO then, because it means they weren’t willing to plead guilty to some of their proposed infractions. Great timing that the news is coming out prior to signing day. The 24/7 news shitstorm should hopefully work to scare off some potential recruits.

      • Pretty much I guess.

Basically Nikegon has contended all along that nothing serious really happened, and they just deserve a slap on the wrist. And apparently everyone else thinks differently, including the NCAA.

At least Duck fans have been grounded in reality all this time.

        • I don’t remember this one: “exceeded the number of permissible coaches from 2008-11 by one coach. ”

That seems like a biggie to me. Maybe Bray can be added on to the staff no problem!

          • The biggie is if Oregon gets hit with the “2nd Major violation in a 5 year window”. They had a major violation back in May 2004 when Gary Campbell was found to have improperly recruited J.J.Arrington. The current accusations fall between 2008 and 2011, which means if a major violation happened prior to May 2009, they will get slapped on the dick.

There’s specific wording in the NCAA rules that says “”A school that would become a repeat-violator cannot use the summary disposition process and must go before the Committee on Infractions.”

This would lead me to think a major violation did occur in that 5 year window, and Oregon was not going to admit to that, hence the summary disposition process could no longer happen.

There was a nice little Oregonian article on the subject last March.

            http://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/index.ssf/2012/03/could_oregon_ducks_be_deemed_r.html

          • That was what they admitted to. I always wondered if Lyles escorting Kelly and Campbell around Texas was what they were talking about.

Instead of admitting he was a booster (and because he wasn’t a legitimate recruiting service), they alleged that they paid him to help recruit as a staff member?

          • anyone with half a pea brain has known that something has stunk big time in Eugene for the last 5+ years. Only myopic duck fan denies any wrong doing. They deserve to get hit with the dreaded lack of institutional control. I am going to stop referring to them as oregon and start calling them wanna be SEC. Shit they can’t even cheat right and get away with it. And when the hammer does fall I wanna be there to laugh in all of my stupid duck fan families faces and tell them……..told ya so!

    • UO has spent a lot of money on the “Cleaner” to get this settled. Looks like it hasn’t paid off. The funds to pay the lawyers is from the academic side of the university not the athletic department.

  12. So, with Nelson’s signature, I think we can conclude that in year 1 Perry has already pulled his weight in recruiting. Probably the biggest recruit we’ll get this class, and he’s locked down.

Huge get for us, and poaching a Georgian native from Georgia is unheard of.

Whether or not his salesmanship is top-notch, sounds like he can at least let his resume speak for itself.

    • It appears Dashon Hunt is also going to be a beav (knock on wood) and L.J. Moore has us in his top 5. Whether they commit or not this is probably the best DB class OSU has ever had.

      • Pretty safe to say Rod Perry can recruit. A lot of the recruits have talked about him being a big reason why they’re interested. Nice to have a guy like that on the staff.

      • This is looking to be a pretty good recruiting class. If we win the Alamo Bowl and punk Texas it could sway a few leans our way. This could be one of the best recruiting classes ever for us.

  13. I see Gary Anderson is Wisconsin’s new coach. Must’ve made an impression on them when they played Utah State and narrowly avoided a loss to the Aggies.

  14. ATH Tatum Taylor has OSU and ASU as his top 2. being recruited as WR. Has the speed to fill Wheatons role but not sure about the rest of his skills.

  15. Texas makes a rare foray into the JC ranks:

    http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/college_sports/longhorns/article/UT-Beat-Horns-tap-into-JUCO-pipeline-4133455.php

“After going a full decade without recruiting the junior-college ranks, Texas has signed its third transfer in two years.”

Looking at their roster, and the high percentage of in-state players, its amazing how much talent is in Texas and how a program like Texas so infrequently needs JC players.

    • Schnell is a Genius! Anyone think there’s any chance Sneaky Riley is participating in a little gamesmanship regarding this whole QB deal?

        • I think Mannion starts too. Hopefully he comes out playing like UCLA Mannion (not UDub Mannion) and this extended rest helped him get his groove back.

          • Mannion starts and throws two picks. MR thinks of pulling him but doesn’t. He throws a third for a pick six and Riley finally benches him. Vaz rallies the team, but fumbles in the red zone while trying a pump fake with one minute left in the game. Jason and I get kicked out of the stadium for excessive cussing.

          • I think that even if Mannion is playing TO-free football, Vaz will get some playing time. And I could see Mannion going back in after. Like Nicholls State, but likely not the same gaudy score and point differential.

Although I would appreciate a Nicholls State-like outcome against Texas….don’t think Mack Brown or the Alamo Bowl committee would.

          • He forgot to add that although Mannion throws 3 picks and Vaz fumbles, Poyer already has 2 pick-sixes at this point with Wynn adding a sack, fumble recovery for a TD so we still win.
However, I never see any of it because I get kicked out during pre-game festivities due to being involved in a scuffle with some douchebag wearing a baseball hat with a giant, yellow “O” in it.

Lettuce lines up for a 65 yarder going into halftime but Seumalo double clutches the snap, backing them up to 70 yards where, due to being in a dome, Lettuce still nails it, setting an NCAA record.

          • ………and Texass fires Mack Brown and offers MR 5 million a year to bring the Horns back to the top.
He takes the gig saying that, although” the grass might not be greener, it sure looks that way with all those dollars spread out on the lawn.” BDC names Ritchie Harrington player/coach and Angry is hospitalized with an erection lasting more than four hours.

  16. I can’t help but feel like Mannion is the one with more potential, but Vaz has shown more and appears less prone to making poor decisions. It is a tough call, but I feel like Vaz gives us the best chance to win.

    • Vaz has gotten away with A LOT of bad passes into coverage, just has been far luckier than Mannion. He also fumbles the ball a ton. Mannion has struggled with INT’s, but I like OSU’s chances far more when he’s starting.

    • I think the more Vaz plays the more his limitations – ability to see the field, pass placement – would become evident and produce negative results (e.g. more INT’s).

Again, going back and watching the WR video link above, both players are poor at pass placement and infrequently hit WRs in stride. Its like they generally throw to an area and rely on the receiver adjusting and making the play. That catches up with either of them; I think its just been more evident with Mannion because he’s had more reps.

  17. Somebody better keep an eye on Cliff. We don’t need another “Sandusky” scandal in college football.

    “Cliff Kirkpatrick ?@CliffGT

Checking out young guys practice. We will see who can make an impact next season. “

  18. Does Peko have qualification issue(s)?

If he’s stopped tripping but won’t sign until next year (Feb?) why else would he put off signing on the dotted line?

  19. I have not heard either way, BUT there is a reason these kids go to JC and the number 1 reason is grades. Even if they get enrolled here there is no guarantee they can keep up the school work. You just have to wait and see.

  20. Antiquated thinking. The number one reason to go to JC is cost of education. Next reason is size issues, lack of maturity or physical limitations. Next is grades. The guy mentioned earlier in this thread as a JC recruit to Texas is a prime example. Good grades but lacked football maturity and true position out of high school. And besides, he has a very cute and smart girlfriend that is a great barista.

      • Correct. Gotta have the offer or the right offer. Again I will make another example. OT Stuckey from CCSF has just transferred to Texas A&M as a freshman full qualifier. That means he had the grades to go anywhere from high school. He is 6’7 and a skinny 290lbs. He is as mobile as any tackle at OSU or any D1 university anywhere. He is hard worker but was overlooked as an immature senior at a mediocre high school and wanted to improve his chances. By the way, there is another guy from the same high school this year, 6’5″ and 280lbs that will probably go to CCSF next year. No one is quite sure whether this new guy is an offensive tackle, defensive end or defensive tackle. He has wheels, is tough but is a project. CCSF as an example of many other places, has also been a pipeline for big Swedish guards and tackle. It is a place where Scout, Rivals and Maxpreps do not go. I was never a jc guy myself, so it is no skin off my back. But I do get uptight about foolish prejudices and the insane notion that we must depend on palm readers and star gazers to tell us what to think.

  21. Here’s “Cooks Lite” in my opinion – probably not as fast as Brandon Cooks or Wheaton certainly, but makes plays with the ball, separates himself from people. These are junior highlights. I expect by the time he sees the field at OSU he’ll be faster, a little bigger. Should be able to run the fly sweep and be a complimentary WR fairly early. Not sure he can play right away as a true FR:

    • Aren’t you supposed to reference quotes?

State of Wonder was ridiculous… especially when you have the same expectations you would from someone who created Bel Canto. It might as well have started off with, “It was a dark and stormy night.”

        • I’m fucking talking about the fucking books written by the fucking author who wrote the fucking book that matt b fucking quoted… fucking.

It would fucking be nice if you could fucking keep up.

        • Not a fan per se. I just read a bunch. And when someone comes through with something different, I set certain expectations for all their new books. But it was useless with State of Wonder. That book was so goofy, I only finished it because I began it. I do recommend Bel Canto. It’s quite good.

          • For comparison, Patchett has some of the romanticism, realism and emotional detachment Cormac McCarthy has.

But the first McCarthy book I read was Blood Meridian, and I have not been disappointed by anything he’s written since.

There were few flaws in that first book. I can’t say the same for Bel Canto. But there seemed to be some promise rather than a one hit wonder.
