Recruiting Update/Discussion

We’re going to be posting more recruiting updates via Beaverkman. I might have another source with good info coming online soon, too. So far I’ve gone through film on 5 prospects, and Marcus Maryion is the only exciting one. For those of you who follow recruiting, do you see any diamonds in the rough or obvious future stars?

    • I’m going to make a thread with every recruiting bit I get.
Just now through signing day. After that, no.

Also, it is worth discussing 2-star recruits because of the low hanging fruit theories. This gives everyone a chance to criticize and put their opinions in writing.

Regarding the recruit above, the 4.4 is clearly a lie. He doesn’t look like a game changer. Maybe a 4th string DB after conversion.

    • His speed looks good, but what I do like is his lateral shifts. Looks like he has good movement within space. I wonder about his grades though since he doesn’t have too many offers.

Also, the staff is all over the nation on its recruiting.
commits from Illnois, Iowa, Texas, Oklahoma, and Hawaii. Then you have offers to guys in TN and SC. They really are combing the rough everywhere.

  1. This class is not very good.
I’ve been going through video the past week…
Hope to have all video+analysis around signing day. I just don’t want to waste time commenting on guys who don’t sign.

  2. Per her twitter, Lindsay Schnell is leaving the Oregonian for some rag called Sports Illustrated. Congrats Angry, your offensive worked and poor Ms. Schnell is off to ply her trade at some low-level sports magazine no one has ever heard of.

  3. I’m intrigued by Harris Ross. Dominated 5* Joe Mixon in the same league. Plays for the old high school and coached by Ken Simonton. Maybe in another year or 2 Ken as a RB coach anyone?

Drew Clarkson looks like a Diamond in the rough OL. OLB Jonathin Willis and WR Datrin Guyton from TX look solid. Love the De Le Salle connection and I imagine Summer Houston will be serviceable. Shane Bowman offered by Peterson: maybe he’s not bad either.

Don’t think either QB has a chance until their senior season with who we already have.

  4. The trickle-down effect from the last few seasons has got to be hurting things like Beaver Blitz and Scout. Usually at this time, I am salivating at the mouth about recruits and I will get a subscription. Nope, haven’t renewed that in 2 years now.

  5. Peko update from the tribune. Which is a completely different take than in the boregonian yesterday

Kyle Peko, the defensive tackle commit from Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif., has one more class to complete this winter. OSU coaches anticipate him being on campus for spring ball.

    • Just read the link whiskey, noticed that Riley says he stopped calling the offense after the UW game. Overall, the quotes Egger’s got really paint Riley as the principled, class guy most scribes present; I’d just like to see him have more passion (which might lead to getting himself some help to overcome his slow thinking during games).

      • just looked at the play calling and compared all plays in ’13 prior to CW with the CW game-

1st downs: 50%/50% pass/run prior to CW and 33%/67% in the CW
2nd & short:(5 yds or less): 63% run prior to CW and 62% pass in CW
2nd and long (11 yds or more): 80% passing prior to CW and 100% passing in CW
3rd and 4th downs: same splits all season

If UO studied our play calling, the change up worked.

  6. 4* OT Kaleb McGary put us in his top 3 with Wazzu and the Fuskies. Says he’s a huge Riley/OSU fan.

Pick up a couple more good OL prospects and the class will be alright. IMO skill positions never really worry me with the beavs. It’s all about the beef.

    • McGary sounds interesting, any more info available? I looked in the recruiting area here and didn’t see a mention of him.
Could this come down to Petersen vs. Riley? Or Seattle vs. Corvallis? Or maybe the kid likes foul language……one can hope!

      • Don’t pay for the scouting services, so I don’t have access to any special info. According to Scout he narrowed it down to 3 officially yesterday. We are his favorite at this point according to Scout and ESPN. I Think he grew up an OSU fan and loves Riley. All this even after his official visit which was the Washington game. I was in attendance and have no idea how anyone not donning Husky gear could have enjoyed that miserably cold, disaster of a night.

        • Maybe kman will come up with something.
WOW, the UW game! Hard to believe any serious athlete would remain interested after that. I am not gonna let folks forget that Riley said, “We’ll never play like that again”.

          • Yeah, I have not put anything together on him, as I thought our chances were low on him. I email Angry some info or put it in the other thread.

He got offered by Uo not too long ago and was supposed to visit. After the UW coaching change ( I think he was originally a strong UW lead) I think his schools changed. I noted in previous thread that he loved his visit during the UW game. But that game was so horrible I didn’t know how well it would be received by recruits.

IF we could get him and Kolton Miller, then the recruiting class might be alright.

          • Thanks, kman!
Between your recruiting stuff and the practice reports from Silver and Bone I think I may just survive the departure of Lindsay!

  7. Miller has strong ties to OSU via family and friends. It would be nice if those ties were strong enough to bring him here. But every kid has their own mind.

It sure would be nice to get Miller and McGary to end the cycle though. I’m not as down on this class as angry is, but I can see how it can be viewed as sub-par. Honestly, Clarkson and Liuchan are the only PSAs I’m really excited about. But I can see goodness and even greatness in a couple others. What confuses me is that Bowman and Marcus Griffin were supposed to be blood brothers who might end up a package deal. We could really use Griffin… and he could really use us. I’m not down on Bowman like angry is. I think he’s a little slow. But he’s really strong and plays angles really well. He’s a better run-stopper than he is an edge rusher. But he brings persistence and strength where we have been lacking.

I also wonder about the academics of someone like Guyton. He looks very promising, and I wonder how nobody else is on him. I guess I’ll chalk it up to scheme. He’s a perfect fit for a drop back passer who can hit him in stride. And his stride is really really pretty.

    • I don’t know what you think about Griffin, but he is heavily recruited. He most recently got an offer from Miss St. He basically begged for an OSU offer after he was committed to wazzu, but he said that the coaches told him they were filled at DL commits? Really? We are now moving Obum to defensive end and we don’t have room for a highly touted recruit? That is just a head scratcher, and it’s what frustrates me about Riley and his recruiting plan. Maybe they know something about his grades or off field stuff, but I can’t find anything.

I think Bowman is a good recruit, and one of the top 5 in this class, but I don’t think that’s saying very much.

      • I know something about Griffin’s grades. He’s an honor student just like Bowman.

We need bona fide DTs. I know Griffin is offered by a ton of schools. That’s because he’s a bona fide DT prospect.

Our coaching staff can’t be this stupid.

        Can they?

Do we need to start a campaign for Griffin like we did for Terron Ward? This is just lunacy.

  8. Angry,
Some posters have asked about him. I tried to send you some stuff earlier and it got deleted. He is from Fife, Wa which is outside of Tacoma about 20 minutes south of Seattle, he was originally from Battle Ground which northwest of Vancouver. I would look at his combine tape first, I think that is where he getting alot of his run, because his game tape looks like he is a man among boys dominating the competition and his hudl tape is full of him playing TE and DE (he is being recruited for OL). It does show him to very athletic and he is good at hoops. I didn’t post anythign on him because I thought we were a longshot at getting a 4star recruit, he was a big UW lean, but with Sark leaving it has opened things up.

Well that is it for now since I had to do this twice tonight. Use what you want to, if any of it. I think he is a good recruit, he could easily add 20-30 lbs to a big frame. We just never land these sought after guys.
