Recruiting

I’m now hearing Delp might be headed to ASU afterall. Guyton getting calls from TCU and Texas. Oklahoma with minor interest in Bright Ugwoegbu.

Stefan Flintoft signs as a punter.

Nothing about OSU being in the mix for 4+ stars or poaching recruits, so this class is pretty much signed, sealed, and delivered with the possibility of some defections.

  1. Disappointing to hear. I posted this on the last thread:

“BTW, I don’t know if there’s any significant difference between Rivals’ ratings and Scouts’, but I see Scout has about 19 of OSU’s commitments as 3*, eight as 2*. I’ve generally been of the opinion that a well-coached OSU team with 3* talent could get to the rose bowl, and it seems that my “impressions” of this class are lower than Scouts. Seems like a lot of developmental prospects, but I’m not sure if that’s a luxury OSU can afford unless they are incredibly fortunate and avoid injuries.

I haven’t watched a lot of film on this class and am looking forward to more informed opinions from individuals on this site when the letters are in.”

    • His offer sheet isn’t terrible. Colorado St, Eastern Washington, Montana, San Jose St, etc. Maybe not big time BCS schools, but these schools regularly field talented players.

    • Looking at his tape, he must be an academic risk. His size, speed and instincts are too good to be rated that low, so I immediately think of a DJ Welch situation.

  2. So basically Delp was the guy being dangled out by subscription services to get people to subscribe. (See Beaverblitz front page)
I saw something from ASU’s Rivals site that they think Delp is back with ASU too.

Too bad because I was getting slightly excited about our class of linemen on both sides coming in. No standouts, but nice depth across the board.

On Blitz, it looks like we have 27 commits currently. We rank #9 in the Pac according to their total numbers factored in with star rankings. If you look at over average star ranking, we’re #11. Slightly behind Colorado and ahead of Utah. Yikes…..

Scout’s conference rankings mirror this, although we’re #10 in average star ranking and Colorado comes in last place.

OSU coaches must be happy the Pac brought in Colorado and Utah to help them avoid last place.

    • dangle?

I just think it comes down to whether ASU is offering Delp a greyshirt or a redshirt year. sounds like he visited OSU because they switched to greyshirting him but now might be back to offering him a schollie 2014.

This class is disappointing, though. No special talent at the top, the rest of the class is pretty much same old same old but there’s no Cooks-Seumalo-Hunt at the top.

  3. That is truly pathetic.I get that Riley and his minions have an ability to get dudes that fit the program and maybe overlooked / underrated however. Oregon State should be in the middle of the Pac when it comes to recruiting not bringing up the rear.

Semi Recent success and some notable NFL talent should accomplish that.

( OSU should be in that second tier group of teams)_

    1. Stanford
    2. Oregon
    3. UCLA
    4. USC
    5. UW

    6. ASU
    7. Oregon State
    8. UA

    9. CAL
    10. Utah
    11. WSU
    12. Colorado

      • ya and U of A spends like 7 million more (or close to half what we spend more) per year. Cal? 10 mill more. Colorado 6 million more. Even Utah spends more.

How did you decide this tier thing?????????????????????????????????????

          • expenses.

you know, money that you choose to pay for stuff with.

Or did colleges switch to the trade and barter system cause I’m willing to trade the Poling Dorm for a 5 star defensive end.

          • You’re saying they spend. On what precisely? Based on what numbers? Do those numbers include capital costs for facility upgrades both necessary and Duck-like-silly? Is it the total spent for the AD as a whole? If so, how many teams are they spending on?

Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera….

          • US Department of Education Football expenses:

            Washington 23.8 million
            asu 23.5 million
            USC 23 million
            UO 21 million
            UCLA 20.1 million
            arizona 20.1 million
            Colorado 19.7 million
            Furd 16.6 million
            Utah 14.3 million
            osu 13.7 million
            wazzu. 12.6 million

I’d say OSU is sadly performing about to what they’re paying for. Potentially, can I say it? Over achieving??

For the record, I think Riley can recruit better. I think Read’s a waste of a staff spot and if his replacement even brought in 1 4 star a year it’d be a massive upgrade. Expenses aren’t the end all be all but I think they matter a lot more than how many players we’ve put in the NFL. Let alone what a new OC could do.

If I were to tier it out we’d be in the Wazzu-Utah level overachieving because a long tenured staff and underachieving programs at UW and Colorado.

I would also suspect ASU and UW’s 2013 numbers are higher due to football facility upgrades but I don’t know this for sure.

          • link?

I can’t find anything other than aggregate data. And that’s about three years old at best. It includes everything from coaches’ salaries to capital expenditures to staff pay… to recruiting expenditures, which is what this discussion is about.

So where are my numbers for spending on recruiting? This is what I get for numbers, which is why I wanted to know what the breakdowns were. I think it supports your argument, but there are no millions being discussed as you originally posted.

          • Another Boston area fan? Welcome.

Anyone hear from Warren lately? He usually hung out on profootballtalk or whatever it is. I haven’t seen him lately. Do we figure he went to college somewhere and felt obliged to be a fan there?

I haven’t said this to you yet, so I’ll be plain. OSU Prof does some great number crunching and data collection. But he does no real analysis. Granted, there are no real analytics to be had in college sports. Effort plus money equals success… in that same order of importance.

And sorry to say, I’m an economist, and I simply hate charts.

          • OSU Prof could definitely delve deeper into the subjects. But, his posts are 1000 what yours or anyone on this site’s are. This site just follows the same narrative over and over even if the numbers don’t back it up. Sadly, I think when AB started this site years and years ago it made great points about the small things OSU could change to get further over the hump. But has now lost itself in the drivel of being anti-authority regardless of evidence.

          • Thanks for the same link where I can aggregate data. You just gave up looking. Right?

Recruiting is what this is about. Expenditures are secondary to effort always. Cheating trumps all, but that’s another story. I mean… what kind of stupid school does it take to put their cheating expenditures on the school’s AD budget?

OSU Prof could delve into something? Deeper? He doesn’t delve at all, and his bent is transparent as all get out despite his methodology being poor and his conclusions logically faulty. Do I really need to parse this?

“OSU Prof could definitely delve deeper into the subjects. But, his posts are 1000 what yours or anyone on this site’s are.”

Really dude? You’re going to finish your vague and incorrect references to recruiting by first claiming that it’s not really about recruiting and then falling off into some more vague somethings?

Your mind is 10,000 more than mine dude. I really mean that… I think? Here’s some proof:
            http://www.drljsnaturalwellness.com/site-files/uploads/2012/06/4wordsdescribe-you.jpg

          • Just for fun, should I make a chart of all D1 teams and their mean temps versus their recruiting rankings?

That’s another lie foisted by apologists. Lies cover poor effort. Acceptance of poor effort is unacceptable.

That’s what this site is most commonly about. If you think it is anti-authority without evidence, you’d be wrong. If you think it’s collectively drivel, then you’re not reading. I think your experiment here has ended in failure hhfs or Potter or gfgf or whomever you are. You have some sense and add to the conversation sometimes. But you can’t just run away from a thread when challenged on data. Analysis is more than setting up the question then running the numbers to fit your answer based on one unmarked graph. Analysis would be studying many many different data sets and finding correlations and deviations and just plain old life.

If you think a post that apologizes in the first sentence after posting an insufficient data set is 1000 more than me, so be it. Go be 1000 more than me kind sir.

          • WOW. Blah blah blah blah

Show me why you think OSU should be competing with Arizona, Washington, UW etc., etc., All finances indicate we should be a bottom tier school. Like I said, that doesn’t mean we have to be, nor does it let our AD off the hook for having bottom tier resources but facts are facts.

Dude you are so far up your own ass its amazing.

As for OSU Prof, I’ll pass on the subject. I can guarantee you every reader values his input more than either of ours.

          • OSU should be competing with all the Pac schools in recruiting because we compete with them on the field. I agree that finances are a part of that. But my point is that finances are a result of the effort put forth in this arena, not the other way around.

Thanks for breaking the ad hominem seal. I won’t be going there with you since I think this discussion is a valid one.

OSU Prof puts out good data. It’s the hypotheses and conclusions with which I have problems. And it’s not that I agree or disagree with him… or you. It’s that he relies on single data sets to prove the hypotheses. That’s just poor methodology. What you have done here is the same. My argument isn’t that you’re wrong. It’s that you don’t provide relevant data. And the point from which you begin is already in the weeds. I want someone to take a holistic approach with variables like spending, weather, location, facilities, tradition, academic perception, etc. set in their proper places. Then I want to attack the variables which are just weak excuses and do something about the ones which are within our control.

The issue is that these variables are all poor excuses for failure both alone and collectively, but especially alone. Sheer force of will can overcome all of them. And that topic is what brings most here. If you detect cynicism it’s because this has been discussed ad nauseum, and this issue remains constant, albeit with the apologists yielding somewhat over the years.

Perhaps you need to go back and see how you attacked Cali’s post. Do you even see how you pivoted out of the weeds there?

        • The tier thing is based strictly off of the notion of being a high school senior with some nice NFL potential and an offer from each PAC 12 school. That’s how i would currently rank the schools in terms of desirability. It has nothing to do with recruiting budgets. The kids are oblivious to that.

Riles and his misfits could even play up the fact that when they actually get a prized recruit that dude usually makes the league. Can you think of the last prize recruit Beav that didnt play on Sundays? Phillip is maybe the only guy that comes to mind. This should be the focus of the pitch to these blue chippers.

          • I agree with this in its logic. But look throughout the nation.

The schools that spend – get elite players. The schools that don’t, don’t. Especially in undesirable locations like Corvallis (from an 18 year olds perspective).

Look at the SEC – big money = big time recruits. Or do you think Ole Miss is pulling these guys because Eli went there 10 years ago and Sandra Bullock adopted a kid?

    • I agree with your assessment on where OSU needs to be which is in the middle. A couple of factors for this season and possibly moving forward. First, the Arizona schools have up’d their recruiting and have been on top of the conference this year for a majority. Secondly, Cal has been very down from where they have been traditionally. I would swap Cal and UW, I don’t Peterson is going to go after the same high profile guys as previous staffs, however he will get those high recruits who want to stay at home near UW.

The top four is something that is unattainable for our program, but they should be 6 or 7. However, I don’t see this staff wanting to compete for those types of players. It’s almost like they have said, well we can’t get those guys so its not worth our time. Now there probably is some reality in that, but I think it will be hard to build a program on that. I think that is why you have seen this program stagnate for the past five seasons. They do have a handful of top recruits, and they are the ones who regularly win post season honors or get drafted high. No doubt about it, they have taken under valued players and “coached them up” into All-Conference guys.

But for this program to take the step forward they need to be willing and be successful at getting more of top recruited players. I am not saying they need a whole class of them, but they do need to the Mannions, Cooks, and Suemalo’s of the recruiting world to improve the program to supplement they other “projects” they have.

IMO, the class as whole is average. It’s not great and its not horrible. It will go down as the 11th maybe 10th ranked class for averaged stars. That is too low in my book. They need to be around 6 or 7th to continue the programs forward progress. We have a saying in our industry, “the day you stop recruiting is the day your agency starts dying.” I believe we are starting to die because they seem to have stopped recruiting the top talents in the state and the west coast.

      • The expanded recruiting geography that seems to be occurring this year appears to be the coaching staff’s response to the issue you raise, so far verbals from Az, Ca, Hi, Id, Il, Ia, Mn, Ok, Or, Tn, Tx, Ut, and Wa. They seems like a broader geography than usual, but I haven’t gone back to check other classes and compare. Of course Ca still provides the most, with 8 verbals thus far.

This may work in a few cases, unless the recruits eventually get more notoriety and get poached (Guyton, Hawkins as potential examples).

      • Petersen will get elite recruits. The reason he didn’t at Boise was the conference Boise is in. Now that he’s competing against other Pac schools, he will drive talent to Montlake in droves. And it won’t just be the mish-mash of highly rated putzes Sark brought in just to brag about recruiting prowess. Although, it’s not fair to the players for being worse than their potential when Sark is your coach. So I apologize to them.

Don’t forget that Pete recruited in the Pac once upon a time. And he brought some very good players in at that time.

  4. Eggers wrote that Delp/Crawford was an either/or thing a couple days ago.

And for once we lose someone I just don’t like on tape.

Yay! He can throw a power ball further than anyone else! I can’t wait for power ball season to roll around.

  5. For what it is worth, the new guy, cousin of Ross, is rated higher by SF Chron today (more knowledgeable than scout or rivals on Bay Area) than Ross or Houston. Jack is probably on to something but a closer look will reveal, like his cousin, he did not hit the camp trail until late. Believing in Scout/Rivals star system is equal to following Astrology.

    • I think perhaps news coverage of cheating as merley increased.

The SMU incident proved to us all that you’re safe if you’re a big time school, and screwed if not.

Cam Newton is just the modern example – if you’re in the SEC you’re safe, if not, hopefully no one’s heard of you (IE not Ohio State, USC)

  6. OT… I didn’t bring it up the other day, but this little thing was very funny.

I was watching the Ducks and USC on Saturday off and on with other games. My wife was complaining about Ernie Kent and how he never shuts up… again. And she’s a Duck… heh heh.

So we’re doing various things while watching games like we always do. We just tried our best to tune Kent out when that game was on. Then I suddenly stopped and rewound the DVR to listen to what I thought Ernie Kent, former head coach at Nikegon, said about the Ducks during their home game at the TTATT.

He just called them Oregon State.

I couldn’t believe he would do that, so I listened again to make sure. He said it. He plain as day called the Ducks Oregon State.

And then he did it again a couple minutes later.

I stopped watching that game when the lead got to double digits because it looked like USC had given up. So I don’t know if he did it more than that.

  7. Very mediocre class. No star potential. I don’t see too many projects (guys who need to learn how to play ie Gwachum). Mostly they just need to fill out.

One thing also stands out, usually the recruiting sites will disagree on high three star recruits. But this year, no recruit got 4 stars on any site. that’s disappointing. First year in a while that the coaches didn’t sign a 4 star guy.

    • agreed. Especially the olinemen. Most of the 2014 class just needs time in the weight room. This class will help our depth – but in the 4th quarter I’m not sure our 2016 roster will have enough talent to do the special things needed to win.

    • would be a solid pickup for the Beavs.

But he’s class of 2014? So he would sign with manderson/payton/baker? Aren’t we out of scholarships. Does this mean Moreland’s gone for sure?

And if Moreland’s god, we certainly don’t need to be thinking small forward. Our starting frontcourt would be Olaf-Gomis without Collier/Brandt/Moreland – ouch. Lets go get a transfer big man.

Someone explain why OSU would target this guy? (unless Craig anticipates losing someone else?)

  8. Biggest take away from the Tenessee Forum on Hawkins:

“Sat next to the Tennessee Offensive Cord. (Bajakin) and the Oregon State wide receivers coach(Brent Brennan) during the Fulton game yesterday. Both were there to see Hawkins and both spent some time with his mother. Oregon State coach said he was his #1 priority. Hawkins didn’t disappoint yesterday with 4 TDs and offensive MVP. Oregon State coach coming back to watch him in the East/West game with an in home and official visit to Oregon State in January. If you don’t believe the hype look him up on Hudl. The kid can flat out ball!

By the way the kid defending him yesterday has SEC offers. Hawkins ran him silly yesterday.”

    • My biggest take away is Vols fans think of Vandy as their little sister. Basically ‘we think Hawkins is solid, but not quite good enough for say us. But its such a shame to let him leave the south, Vandy should have him!”

  9. It looks like Harris Ross might be a gray shirt and not sign tomorrow. Looking for confirmation.

    @HamptonKevin
Riley said Beavers will not bring in a running back in this class. The Beavers have good depth at the position. #gtsports #gobeavs

      • Yeah, I like him as well. I hope its a Greyshirt and doesn’t have to go JC route, which would mean he would be re-recruited after getting his AA degree. From his twitter last night he was all over the Crawford commit and was retweeting his stuff on twitter. So, he seems excited to join the team. We will find out more later this week though.

He went toe-to-toe with Mixon (5star stud going to Oklahoma) during the season and he out played him for the most part. Now there team might be overall better than Mixon’s, but its still worth noting.

I believe Haskins can be really good. I love his combination of size and speed, and his work ethic is supposed to be off the charts. If all that is true and stays the same I believe he will be the next great Beaver back.

  10. Heard news from DeVan’s family that Kyle got an assistant coaching gig in the NFL. Don’t remember where, but that adds the need for another GA and potential TE coach.

  11. I disagree a bit but This was kind of a good quote from Riles:

“Can we assume you’re going to spend almost no time evaluating where Oregon State ranks nationally with this recruiting class?

“I won’t look at that. I’ll look at each individual guy that I’ve got in front of me and I feel really, really good about them. When we go through our process of getting to the point where we’re going to make an offer … and we get a commitment, we basically have a philosophy of no regrets. We’ve been through a process where it goes from one coach, to a coordinator, to the head coach, to personnel people. Everybody’s all in on it. And when we get to that point then we’re not going to have any second-guessing. So we feel confident and good about this class. There was one year (2009) where we had seven guys drafted in the NFL, it was second in the country, and not one of those guys was recruited by anybody else in our league. So we have to rely on our evaluation, feel confident in it. We want them to have the stars next to their name when they come out. We’re not necessarily worried too much about when they’re coming in.”

    • Ever heard of Seattle Seahawks? Do you think they were worried what others thought about Wilson, Sherman, Baldwin, Chancellor, Smith or Mebane? Not.

      • No they didn’t worry, because they can Cut them if they didn’t work out and sign somebody else the next day. Very different. But I understand your point, and I hope your right, I am skeptical.

  12. The perfect GA/TE hire might be that white board backup OL that just finished up his eligibility at Stanford. Anyone know where he’s ended up? The guy is a X’s and O’s genius IMO.

  13. Baker Pritchard has signed. He’s a DE transfer from BYU who has completed his mission. Not sure how many years he has, but he was a 3* guy a few years ago. Thats a neat deal in case we dont get Delp.

  14. Not sure if anybody else noticed, but Rivals was down today from around 7:00-8:15 because of “unreal traffic at their site”

I’m sure all of those people creating the unreal traffic were glad they paid for that service to see it go away during the most important hour of their year.

    • Rivals really sucks. They’ve still only got about half the guys listed under “signed LOI” that the OSU website has. They also still don’t even have the Beavs as a serious contender for Delp.

  15. I hope I’m wrong about this class, and Riley the Gemologist has found a buncha’ diamonds…

There’s some height at DB (three at 5’11” +) and WR, the OL look good at 6’5″+ for the most part, some of them need to put on weight, there’s intriguing qb prospects, including a mobile one…some volume at DE, hope they can start producing when league play rolls around….Pritchard is interesting, maybe because he’s a surprise (to me anyway) but he looks slow to me – DT?

  16. Wonder if Matt Moore might have a future role at OSU? He seems to come back on a regular basis, he’s bright, strikes me as having potential as a recruiter.

    • If he plays DL, with Kalani Vakameilalo, Pritchard, Hollingsworth, Ewing, Lamone Williams, and Houston I think this is a real strong DL class.

    • Delp is a project. He’ll be like Castro. Won’t make an impact till Jr or Sr year due to weight issues.

Olson is a better project because he knows how to play, just needs to gain 40 pounds and get stronger.

      • Beaver fans and recruiting sites were longing for a signing day surprise…some excitement. That’s the big reason Delp has gotten so much pub. As far as his skills, he gets good penetration but once in the backfield lacks awareness, so agree, project…

        • Anybody else think that with the addition of a few guys of a similar build, we will be playing more 3-4 looks on D. Delp and the fat JC kid from last year are prototypical nose tackles.

      • He’s strong up top. He really needs to work on his legs. If he loses 20 to 30 pounds and works the legs in the weight room, he won’t be running any more 5.55 40m.

  17. Sounds like Ross has academic issues to work through.

    Connor Letourneau ?@ConnOregonian 1h

Ross said he plans to sign a financial aid agreement and be on campus in January. Friend Xavier Crawford will join him in then.

  18. @Stephen__Nelson
Sanders’ CVHS teammate Drew Kell, younger bro of ex-#GoBeavs Devon, is expected to walk on at OSU. Drew suffered torn ACL last Sept. #opreps

  19. Stephen Nelson ?@Stephen__Nelson 18s

  20. Nall is a good looking 2-star. Could be a very nice TE.
    T. Sanders has to move to WR. Don’t see any other possibility for him at the college level.

    • Sanders said Riley et al had guaranteed the opportunity to play QB. But with so many others at the position it will be hard for him to see the field unless he moves.

      • He might give him a brief opportunity to keep his word, but Sanders is not a D1 QB.
He would make a good slot WR…he’s shifty with good hands. He reminds me of jeff maehl.

        • As it happens, I watched Tanner Sanders play basketball last night, starring in CV’s defeat of Corvallis HS. Sanders put up 21 points (including a dunk), seven assists, seven steals, five rebounds and five blocks. By far the best athlete on the court. Regardless of what Sanders and OSU are saying or have said about QB, Sanders is going to end up as a WR for the Beavers. I continue to believe Sanders has the athletic talent and skills to be a very good WR (a starter for the Beavs for multiple years) IF he (Sanders) can stay healthy. Sanders’ footspeed is just ok, but he has good hands, good hops, and a knack for competing, getting open, and coming down with the ball.

          • My kid goes to CHS and is a couple of years behind Sanders so I’ve only seen him a few times. You’re tapped into CV sports, aside from the shoulder injury as a junior(?) what exactly is injury prone?

    • Pretty sure I saw Nall as a mid to high 3 star now on all the sites. I think he could be a stud based off watching him at the high school level. With his size and speed id like to see him at LB but he could be a good TE too.

      • His frame is incredible for a 17 year old. He looks like Colt Lyerla, light edition.
So, yes, I could see him at LB or TE. Those are the two positions that came to mind. It looks like he could be a decent RB even, but I think he has more upside at those other two positions.

Also agree he’s a 3 star. I will do my own rankings this week or next.

  21. SportsCenter is doing a Center Piece on the recruiting process “then and now” for NLI Day. Pretty interesting insights about college recruiting, evaluations/ratings, and player development.

Can’t find a link as it’s just airing now, but it’s worth trying to catch over the next hourly segment for those interested.

  22. Looks like Ricky Liuchan and Lamone Williams are the only 2 holding out right now.

Ross and Crawford show crossed out reportedly won’t arrive until January.

  23. Bright U looks more like a safety than LB. Has the perfect frame for S.
He’ll have to put on 40lbs to play lb in college.

Luichan and Willis (fast!) look good.

  24. Pritchard resembles Chricthon a little bit ( looks wise) and his film looks solid. Looks to have some decent speed off the edge and he has likely bulked up while on mission ( reportedly at 270 LBS??). Seems like a good get and guy who should be able to help this year.

  25. I really hope that Bray and Co. can use this class (and more!) to get us back to Linebacker U. After watching Seattle’s season this year, I reminded me just how much I love a solid defense!!

  27. Great news about Peko on top of the other DTs! And don’t forget about Grimble from Miami who sounds like he’ll be a lock to start next season. DT looks to have gone from possibly (probably?) our weakest position group last season to one of our deepest.

  28. I am actually starting to like this class. I think it adds badly needed heft and depth on the Dline that should enable Doctor/Alexander, and incoming speedy LBs, to make plays. There appears to be some legit size at MLB for a change as well, and some rangy DBs.

Currently, I think OSU has 3 good cover corners in Nelson > Hunt > Scott, that should benefit from frontline pressure.

I am under the impression right now that the whole of the team has improved, even if individuals in this class maybe don’t look great in isolation. But I look forward to other’s assessments here as I’m not a good judge of film highlights (I actually wish films would increase “lowlights” to balance out the perception – not that any kid is going to post a film of lowlights, but somebody else could).

        • Good point.
There has to be a better CB than Scott on the roster. Maybe Okonkwo…or Demarlon Morris can step right in. He looks good on film and had a ton of good offers.

I like the idea of Nelson, Hunt, Morris…

          • I have to admit I didn’t watch a lot of games last season…parts of several. I thought Scott made some plays when in limited time, though admittedly many were kind of garbage time stuff.

I may be overestimating him, but I did consider the third best option. He has pretty good size, but I maybe I really shouldn’t say he’s a “cover” corner.

I’ve been intrigued by Onkonkwo because he seems like a smart kid, but haven’t seem him get any reps(?).

          • He’s also the guy who was the main ball hawk in most of the practice reports last year. Maybe he has the tools and is a practice all-star, but gets nervous and makes mistakes in game.

          • Yeah, now that you mention it I remember offensive players predicting Scott was going to be a playmaker in the near future. I think maybe it was Woods that said that?

  29. Next question: How does the numbers game play out? I see 29 names on the board (not counting Keenan, but including Del Rio.) Does Del Rio count against this year? Do they grey shirt all of the undersized O-Linemen (Yanni, Moore, Olson)? I saw someone on the Tennessee Boards saying they wish they’d Blue Shirt Hawkins because he has major potential, WTF is that?

    • Also, Silversteam mention before Tanner Sanders is an incredible athlete. Anyone curious about the potential of 6’5″ Receiver with speed, a good vertical who was a former option quarterback? Could be a sleeper.

    • Blue-shirting is a way to get around the NCAA limit on signings during the signing period, which is 28. If a kid isn’t recruited (doesn’t get home visits or go on an official visit) by a school and shows up in the fall as a walk-on, he can sign a grant in aid after August 1. He still ends up counting against the limit allowed to enroll during a calendar year (25). So you’d have to do the math in order to not be screwed by going somewhere that is at the limit.

If (hypothetical) Del Rio would have signed a GIA last August when he got to Bama, he would have blue-shirted. As it is, he should win an appeal to be eligible in 2014 at OSU for the same reason. The kid who would have blue-shirted but gets screwed out of a ship can do a one time transfer where he can be immediately eligible for the new school.

  30. What kind of shirt is it if you show up at end of first quarter and sign up for aid for second quarter (Ross). What if you got an academic scholarship, attended for a year but had no meaningful involvement with program and then showed up for practice in year 2 as a walk on? My local JC (co National Champ) has few locals. It has players from 25-30 states, Canada, Sweden, sometimes Mexico, New Zealand , and Australia. The JC does not have football scholarships but about 99% get financial aid. I understand JC is not NCAA. But what would prevent any NCAA team from bringing on a guy with financial aid, keeping him under the radar for a year or two or three and then sliding him into the depth chart with a one or two year scholarship when holes are created?

  31. Jen Beyrle ?@JenBeyrle 13m

Martinek says he’s signing a letter recognizing that he will play both football & baseball at OSU next year. Scholarship counts for baseball

I thought I’ve read on this site before that the scholarship would have to count towards football in the case of a player playing both baseball/football.

  32. I DONT think anyone ( coaches included) has seen enough of Larry Scott in games to say how good he is or will be..

He’s looked ok in limited action. But its too early to throw out a blanket “he is not good” proclamation on the kid in my opinion.

  33. Do y’all think Zach Kline is looking at transferring to another school now that we have about 1000 QBs for him to compete with?

I mean, he left Cal since he lost the QB spot to Goff so would he transfer to OSU where he will have to compete with so many other players?

    I mean we just signed:
    Luke Del Rio
    Nick Marshall
    Marcus McMaryion
    Tanner Sanders

    And already have:
    Kyle Kempt
    Brent VanderVeen

    • Yes. Him and at least two others. Kempt and Vanderveen have no chance to see the field for any meaningful snaps and I expect them to transfer as well.

When you have a four year starter, you end up with a log jam anyway. Now it just got worse.

    • Good questions. I don’t see Mitchell or Sanners ever playing qb. I think Mcmariyon has a big arm and if he learns the offense he could be alright. I like Kempt over Vanderveen. As far as transfers go Ihave said I have doubts Kline ends up here. Transferring I can envision Mitchell and Vanderveen.

IMO Del Rio will be the next qb the three years after Mannion

    • He’d transfer in because he thinks he can win it. None of the other QBs have seen the field. The system fits him. There’s no other school that really fits his talents on the west coast other than OSU.

My guess is that McMaryion switches to WR to alleviate the logjam. He’s pretty talented and athletic QBs make pretty good WRs.

And I don’t think we got Nick Marshall. I think he’s still at Auburn.

    • kerry eggers ?@kerryeggers 1m

Oregon State coaches have spoken with ex-Cal QB Zach Kline, who tells them he still intends to transfer to OSU after two terms @ Berkeley JC

    • Thanks for the link.
This stood out to me; Riley on Peko, who still has a class to complete, “He’s a good player. If indeed he makes it, that will be very good.” We’ve seen some pretty big IF’s in the past, hope this isn’t a repeat.

Also noticed Riley still leaving Gundy in the coaching discussion.

      • I think we can count on Peko NOT being on the team. How many times have we heard the same song and dance about “one more class?” It has become a cliche.

      • Go with the profile on ESPN. That’s one that’s more reliable since they were done at a sparq combine.

Anything in the newspaper is provided by the player or school. Really unreliable. Don’t you remember setting your height and weight on the roster? A few extra inches and 50 pounds, who can really tell?

  34. OT – with all of their resources and exposure, I’m surprised Oregon didn’t have a higher ranked class. I think they’ll be dangerous with fast RBs and skill players, but I also think they’re on the descent. They’ll likely remain a top 3 or 4 PAC program, but it’s going to be more challenging for them.

At least from Rival’s perspective, USC did well in recruiting, Stanford had something like 9 4*s, including a QB and RB, UCLA appeared to do well with 114*s, and ASU was pretty solid too.

I’d be interested to see in Angry’s class evaluation some thoughts about how OSU’s class looks not only in comparison to it’s previous classes, but the PAC context as well. It looks to me like OSU has to capitalize on some of the JC DTs and the CB and make as much noise as they can in Mannion’s last year, because in 2015 they have to start all over at QB.

    • “…I’m surprised Oregon didn’t have a higher ranked class….”

I’m surprised they didn’t successfully recruit a higher ranked class, didn’t mean they should be ranked higher because they’re rich and well-marketed.

    • On 2014, I agree with the need to capitalize on, not only the JUCO DT’s and the CB but I’d include the LB’s (really the entire D) already on the squad.

The other area which will be pivotal is how Riley goes about filling out the coaching staff. This could be a big turning point for the program if he adds someone who can make up for his oft discussed (here) shortcomings. If he doesn’t make (and utilize) a good hire then chances of a significant, lasting turnaround are nil at best. In any event, 2015 will be a challenge; but a strong D and a better coaching approach could mitigate the “first year for the QB” blues.

  35. Rick Neuheisel had a very good point at the end on our recruiting efforts this year. Riley has done a consistent job of getting players out of LA, or the Inland Empire (Cooks, Housmanzadeh, and others) last yr I think we got 5. This year our only one was Delp at the last minute, from Pomona. He cautioned that having a poor year at those top level high schools can effect future years, and is something to keep an eye on for next year. You can’t have that fertile pipeline dry up. It’s a good point that we should keep tabs on. Yeah we went into more states this year for talent, but also our lowest total from California.

      • Cooks was wrong he mentioned somebody different, my bad. But your right, he is a blow hard. You have convinced me nothing to worry about on that end. Stupid announcers who just want hear themselves talk.

  36. Last year, Beaver coaches camped in the Empire. Joe Seumalo was on a roll there and many of the other coaches failed to do their jobs in other regions. That is why they sort of panicked and ended up with 5 guys. How many guys does Read identify and get?
